‘Over’coming obstacles By DOUG GORMAN dgorman@newnan.com

W hen the pre-game music blares from t he loudspea ker, or when Newnan Lady Cougar basketball coach Lavarrett Pearson yells instructions to his team, junior point guard Dakota Overton can’t hear any of it. The Newnan High School student has lived in a silent world since birth and has to rely on educational interpreter Linda Lindsey to understand the instructions her coach is trying to convey to the team. But deafness doesn’t define Overton, nor does it stop her from fulfilling her dream of earning a spot on the school’s varsity basketball team. In fact, she is a two-sport athlete who also excelled last year in the Lady Cougars lacrosse program. Overton divides her time between the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams, but once she steps on the floor, she thrives on playing good defense and shooting long-range

jumpers. Although her time has been limited with the varsity this season, she helped the Lady Cougars earn an easy win over Lithonia during the holidays, hitting a 3-pointer to the delight her teammates, who waved their hands in a shaking motion — the sign for applause. “I love to steal the ball and I like to shoot 3-pointers,” she said through her interpreter. Although Overton can read lips, she does most of her communicating during games through the help of Lindsey, who is employed by Coweta County School system. The two have formed a special bond, spending several hours a month together, both in class and at games and practices. Since earning her place with the Lady Cougars, Overton’s biggest challenge hasn’t been dribbling or shooting the basketball, it’s been finding ways to communicate with her team. “I really had to improve my skills

“She is a hard worker. She loves the game of basketball. The girls get along with her well. They have learned sign language and I have learned sign language, too. She has been very inspiring. There were some challenges and adjustments at first, but it’s all great now ... “ — Newnan girls head basketball coach LaVarrett Pearson on junior guard Dakota Overton

of communication a lot, communicating with the team was tough at first,” she said. “It’s easy to communicate now as we have gone on. At first, they thought I understood the lip reading a lot better than I did. I had to have them slow down because they talked so fast. Now, I can understand and lip read them during the game. If they mouth the play, I can see it and understand it.” One way Overton and her teammates bridged the communication gap was to develop special signs for the different plays. “Once they understood I can’t always read lips as well as they think, that made it easier,” Overton said. B efore s te ppi n g fo o t on t h e Newnan campus, the point guard honed her basketball skills as a member of Smokey Road Middle School’s program. “It’s really where I learned to communicate with hearing players for the first time,” she said. Overton didn’t just win over her Lady Cougar teammates with her basketball ability. Her charismatic personality and infectious smile helped her make friends both on and off the court. Despite limited playing time, Overton isn’t just a deaf player who happens to be on the team. She is a student-athlete who has the ability to play the game and contribute to the team.

programs for better family planning. The health department became a hotspot for the community. “It got to be quite a big deal. We started to believe we had some people coming great distances to come to our clinic,” said Jackson. “We moved to the Jackson Street location in ‘94. By ‘98-2000, we were bulging. We didn’t know it was going to grow like that.” In 2011, the county gave the Health Department a new, advanced facility on Hospital Road. CCHD was allowed significant input in the design of the new building that opened in June 2011. W h a t w a s Ja c kson most proud of in her 23 years with the department? “To be involved with

W it h t he close of Ja nuary, Alice Jackson said goodbye after 23 years with the Department of Public Health in Coweta. In the week after retiring, Jackson unfortunately battled a seasonal cold, and although she hasn’t been able to enjoy retirement to the fullest yet, she looks forward to the beginning of a new phase of her life. Jackson grew up in Milledgeville, where she received her master’s from Georgia College. She entered the workforce in the developmental disabled division at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville. After five years, Jackson and her family moved to Newnan in 1990. By 1991, she joined the Coweta County Health Department staff as the county nurse manager, a position she held until Jan. 31. “It was just a new experijackson, page 3 ence. The community and people were new,” Jackson said. “Whenever you start a new job, it’s always a difficult move, but I was excited and I always enjoyed public health because I feel like they prevent disease and that was a big deal.” After only a few short years of living and working in Newnan, the city — and its health department — began expanding at a rapid rate. The building at the time was on Perry Street, but moved during this time to a building on Jackson Street. Neit her of t he locat ion s proved adequate for the health department. The Perry Street building was small and cold because of loose windows, and the Jackson Street building was again too small, with a design that brought too much separation within the department. “We outgrew that building in about five or six years,” said Jackson of the Jackson Street location. Coweta’s population in 1991, when Jackson sta rted, was Photo by Winston Skinner about 45,000. By the mid-’90s, Alice Jackson, center, looks at photos in a memory book made for population boomed, and Med- her with Debbi Heard, left, and Barbara Stephens, right, at Jackson’s icaid programs began allowing retirement ceremony at Asa Powell Center.

Delectable dessert indulgences Family Features Dessert is an indulgence, and when you delight in the taste, texture and aroma of a decadent sweet treat, you savor every bite. It is easy to get lost in the flavor and fragrance of rich chocolate or creamy caramel. But what happens when chocolate or ca ra mel a re paired with different flavors,

like salty, sour or savory? Spurred by curiosity, the food scientists in the Wilton Test Kitchen dug deeper into unusual f lavor pairings to enhance the taste experience. While the terms “taste” and “flavor” are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. The taste of a food is what the taste buds perceive, while the

flavor of a food is the combination of these tastes, plus t he a roma a nd t he ot her sensations. Treatology™ is the science of blending different flavors and tastes to create dishes that are an experience all on their own. Look for more ta ste, f lavor a nd i nspi ration at www.treatology.wilton.com.

Taste Terminology There are five basic taste categories the taste buds perceive: Sweetness is recognized by the presence of sugar. It is very predominant in desserts, but also creates great contrast with salty and sour. Sourness can be added through a variety of acidic foods, such as vinegars and citrus fruits. Salt enhances flavor, intensifies sweetness and suppresses bitterness. Bitterness may be found in a variety of foods, including chocolate and coffee. When not in balance, bitter can be offensive, but in very small quantities it adds richness and depth. Umami is described as a savory, often mouthwatering taste perceived when eating meat, fish, cheeses like parmesan and bleu and certain vegetables such as asparagus.

and life in the everyday work world once she completes her education. “I have just tried to do as much as a can for her and be there for her,” he said. “I am so proud of what she has been able to accomplish. She has not let her disability stop her.” The two have also created lots of good memories, including a trip they made to Europe where they visited London, Paris and Normandy. “It helped her once they started studying World War II in school,” he said. “It was a great time for us, too.” In addition to her success in athletics, Overton excels in the classroom, and she especially enjoys her literature and social studies classes. She hopes to attend either Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., a school that specializes in college educations for deaf students, or Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Overton is mainstreamed into regular classes and works hard to make good grades. She hopes to translate her academic and athletic talents into an athletic scholarship. However, it might be in lacrosse, not in basketball. “She has fallen in love with the sport,” her father said. “When she first started playing lacrosse, I wasn’t really sure about it. I didn’t know too much about it, but it’s been great. She gets a lot of playing time in lacrosse, and she is really good at it.” L a s t s u m m e r, O v e r t o n attended a lacrosse camp at Clemson University, where a sign language interpreter was provided. The camp showed her she can hold her own with some of the best lacrosse players around. She will have to quickly change gears into her lacrosse mode once basketball season ends in about a week because there won’t be too much down time for the 17-year-old. But Overton doesn’t mind the hectic pace. “I am looking forward to the lacrosse season,” she said. “There is a lot more running in lacrosse, but it helps me stay in shape.”

team. “She can play,” said Pearson. “She is a good shooter and she keeps working to get better.” Overton is the f irst deaf basketball player Pearson has coached, but he said it’s been a great experience. “She is a hard worker,” Pearson said. “She loves the game of basketball. The girls get along with her well. They have learned sign language and I have learned sign language, too. She has been very inspiring. There were some challenges and adjustments at first, but it’s all great now. She has played with a lot these girls since middle school, so that helped.” Overton’s goal of making the roster on her high school team first took shape in fourth grade, when she discovered she had a knack for putting the ball in the basket. Her f irst experience was playing in the Upward basketball program at her church. Overton has improved each year and is confident her best basketball in still in front of her. She credits her success to her close relationship with her father, Darryl, who didn’t allow his daughter to make excuses or sit on the sidelines. “My dad is a g reat person,” she said. “He helps me so much. He has encouraged me do whatever I have wanted to do. He has told me when I was wrong. He told me when I did the right thing, and how to play. He won’t let me miss my games. He supports me in basketball and lacrosse, and in my school work.” The father and daughter enjoy going to games together, often cheering for their favorite college team — Georgia Tech. “It is hard to put into words,” Overton said. “My dad has shown me there is a whole world out there.” Darryl is trying to help his daughter f ind her place in world and get ready for college

Clinic,” said Jackson of the clinic that took over the Jackson Street location after the health department moved to Hospital Road. “It’s a place for people uninsured and underinsured to receive medical treatment. That was a terrific thing to see.” For years, Jackson was a

leader in the community and one of the most vital pieces of the county’s public health efforts. She left a mark on those who worked with her, like Denise Dasher, who came with Jackson to the Coweta County Health Department 23 years ago. “I think public health was her calling,” Dasher said. “She was our voice. She was very concerned with the needs of the people of Coweta County.” Jackson notes the reality that after 28 years of working,

life is changing in a big way. “It’s been strange. I don’t think [retirement] has really sunken in, it’s not real yet. It’s going to take time,” she said. “Life is a series of changes, but it’s almost too fast sometimes.” Taking over for Jackson as county nurse manager will be Dana Scales, in whom Jackson has a lot of confidence. “She’s young and energetic. She’s got good ideas, and she will be resourceful. The county is very fortunate to have her here.” Jackson said.

Jackson feels she’s stepping away at the right time and she’s anticipating a fruitful retirement. But still, she can’t forget the career and the people she dedicated so much to after 23 years. “I certainly do hope the health department continues to do well. It was a great part of my life for a long time. I don’t know if it’s really hit me yet what life will be like without it.”

Following death

I have never been particularly fond of Facebook. To me, it seems almost the social media equivalent of stalking. Everyone joins to check out whatever happened to that boyfriend or girlfriend from high school or college. The other major of activity occurs once a year when everyone “writes on your wall” to remind you that you are another year older. Thanks for that. But over the last few days, I’ve taken a special interest in FB. I have followed the heartache of two dear friends of ours — Billy and Bronwyn. It is a story of sadness, disbelief and true pain. It is also a powerful example of hundreds of people around the country joining in prayer and posting uplifting notes, of a young couple standing strong together, making life-altering decisions. More importantly, it is a beautiful story of grace and faith through it all. I will let them tell their story as they posted their journey on Facebook. Bronwyn: (Jan. 28, 10 p.m.)

My Dad was attending the Rolex 24 hour sports car race in Daytona. On Sunday, he was walking across International Boulevard and was struck by a car. He was alone and suffered massive brain injuries, multiple skull fractures, along with multiple other serious injuries … They have him in a medically induced coma on a ventilator. I know God alone can heal! Bronwyn: (Jan. 29, 3:45 p.m.) “The nurses took dad out of sedation this morning and he didn’t wake up. His swelling increased after lightening the sedation, so they had to put him back under. Prayers please. Bronwyn: (Jan. 30, 10 a.m.) Thank you to each and every one of you for your prayers. My heart is simply broken. I want my dad to wake up. I want him to enjoy picking out amazingly creative Christmas presents for Jake, I want him to tell me how proud he is of me as a mother, how very much he loves Billy. Please lift us up in prayer. Bronwyn: (Jan. 31, 9:15 p.m.) We are still in a critical wait mode … I’ve brought in some Eagles (one of his favorite CDs)

JOHN WINTERS

I know who holds tomorrow. So to my friends and family, God bless you for taking time away from your own precious family to intercede for us right now. Annual Oscar Night Gala moves to Centre Plans are under way for Coweta seventh annual Oscar Night Gala, benef iting the Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club. The event will be March 1 at a new venue — the Newnan Centre on Lower Fayetteville Road. This year’s event, presented by SouthTowne Motors, Bob and Millie Coggin, the Swope Family Fund, Ally, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America, is scheduled the evening before the Oscar Awards. Community members are invited to celebrate the Oscars in style at this black tie event that includes dinner, dancing, and auctions. Guests will be greeted with a red carpet entrance, a live jazz trio and paparazzi. This will be a unique evening with a spin on the Oscars, as Coweta recognizes its own stars. The Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club is a private, nonprofit organization with a mission of improving young lives as well as communities that surround and support the club. “Our vision for the NewnanCoweta Boys & Girls Club is to achieve recognition not just as an after-school program, but rather as a premier youth development organization, driving positive impact i n ou r com mu n it y w it h a

focus on character and leadership development, increasing academ ic success a nd achieving healthy lifestyles,” said Victoria Ellison, NCBGC resource development chair. “Our board remains passionate about changing the lives of Newnan-Coweta youth to make our community stronger and better.” The organization relies upon private, corporate, individual and United Way funding to fill the gap between membership dues and operational expenses. NCBGC asks families to pay annual membership dues of only $35 per child, and no child is turned away due to inability to pay. NCBGC is dedicated to ensuring that the Coweta community’s young people, who are most in need of help, have greater access to quality programs and services that provide promise, hope and opportunities to ensure they may become productive adults. “We cannot be successful in our vision for the Club without our community’s support,” continued Ellison. “It is our hope that our community will come out to this unique and incredibly fun event to help an organization that impacts the lives of so many of our local children.”

sician today. Please pray for discernment as we make decisions for his care and future. Bronwyn: (Feb. 5, 7:40 p.m.) Over 24 hrs off full sedation, Dad is still completely unconscious … I know this man well and am aware that he would not want to live in this condition. Tomorrow at 1:00, I am surrendering it all to the Lord. They will be removing the ventilator. This is a most difficult decision. Billy: (Feb. 6, 9 a.m.) Today

Community Connection

Bad month rising I spent a day last week thinking of something nice to write about February. The result? “At least it’s short.” With apologies to everyone born in February — including my dear departed mother — there just isn’t much to smile about in the most brutal, bleak and bitter month of the (Northern Hemisphere) year. The February birthstone is amethyst. It should be a premature diamond, also known as a lump of coal. If the calendar months held a beauty contest, February wouldn’t even rate Miss Congeniality honors. Sure, Major League Baseball players report for Spring Training in February and the Daytona 500 goes off in Februar y. But other Februar y favorites include Paul Bunyan Day, Groundhog Day and Cherry Pie Day. February is also National Children’s Dental Health Month. Whoopee. Even February’s “brightest spots” have something in common. They are “events” created by humans to soften the month’s horrors. Be honest. If you don’t enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing or other potentially lethal activities involving snowdrifts, skis or webbed shoes, February is a bummer. At least for guys. Females see February differently. Mostly because of Valentine’s Day, an occasion promoted by Hallmark, revered by women and tolerated by men. Guys just pretend to panic when they hunt the perfect Christmas gift. When Valentine’s Day rears its greedy head, dudes are truly frozen with fear. Blame genetics. It is a proven scientific fact that a male’s natural aversion to gift giving is only overcome by the release of hormones that generate deep feelings of love, devotion and, most of all ... fear. God loves a cheerful giver. Women love a scared one. And the Fear Factor is never higher than on Valentine’s Day. Girls like Christmas presents, but they judge a man’s

r o m a n t i c i n t e n t i o n s (a s expressed through his wallet) by the Valentine’s Day offering. Females consider Valentine’s Day the Super Bowl of giving. They want a big payoff. And not necessarily something in a pretty box. Internet dating site eHarmony claims that the day after Va lentine’s Day, Facebook servers are strained to the limit by women changing their FB status from “single” to “in a relationship.” Guys who mess this one up might find their status involuntarily changed to “in a body cast.” Even men who don’t watch The View or Lifetime, the Channel for Women learn this lesson quickly. A nd so aga i n t h is yea r, dudes who aren’t quite ready to “put a ring on it” will spend hours searching for that “special something” that will make a woman drop the tire tool and beam with delight. But there is a bright spot on the romantic horizon. New marketing studies indicate Valentine’s Day has finally caught the “equality” wave. Especially among women. Girls who once believed a “thank you, dear”

ALEX mcrae

and a kiss on the cheek did the job are upping their giving game. Instead of cards, guys are getting screwdrivers, hammers, saws and lawn mower attachments on Valentine’s Day. Surely, bigger and better can’t be far behind. Women who never gave a second thought to Valentine’s Day gifts for men might be concerned, but they shouldn’t be. The smartest ladies already know that where guys are concerned, going big doesn’t have to mean going overboard. Speaking of overboard, girls, a bass boat is not suitable at all for Valentine’s Day. Save that for a special occasion, like opening day of college football season. As for that perfect gift? Nothing says “I Love You” like a small gas-powered chainsaw. With any luck, ladies, he’ll spend the rest of February (or the whole winter) cutting firewood. Outside. You’ll both be happy.
