Plaid Friday
Nov. 23, All Day, Discounts
The name “Plaid Friday” celebrates the idea of LOCAL, which aims to promote the importance of supporting our community by shopping at small businesses. The plaid pattern represents weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big-box store “Black Friday,” and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses, especially during the holiday season. Wear plaid attire during Plaid Friday, as numerous downtown businesses will offer a significant discount to any customer wearing plaid clothing!

Santa on The
Santa on the Square is hosted each year on the day after Thanksgiving from 6- 8 p.m. During the event, Santa visits downtown Newnan to greet children, who are welcome to sit on Santa’s lap and read him their Christmas list. The downtown streets will close within the hours prior to the event, as Santa will be making a special trip from the North Pole to the downtown Newnan Square in a fire truck, and will immediately light the beautiful downtown Christmas Tree before the event begins. This annual tradition in historic downtown Newnan reminds us all of the importance of the holiday season: fostering hope, charity, forgiveness, and kindness.

Business Saturday in downtown Newnan, and take advantage of sales and promotions that are available on this special day. Small Business Saturday is a nationally celebrated shopping event that takes place within downtowns, and other small businesses across the United States. The day is intended to encourage shoppers to consider buying from small retailers and merchants as they check off their holiday gift lists. American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a promotional effort designed to encourage consumers to support businesses that creates jobs, boosts the economy, and preserves downtown districts and neighborhoods around the country. The timing of this annual shopping event is intentional, as it always occurs on the 4th Saturday of November, following “Black Friday,” and prior to the recently established “Cyber Monday” shopping events.

While horseback riding and showmanship m ay not seem l i ke a big feat for some, it is an exceptional achievement for JP, Sarah and Erin. The three riders have u n ique needs a nd receive specia l attention during their weekly lessons at the Reece Center for Handicapped Horsema nship off Wilkerson Mill Road in Palmetto. Wa d e a n d D e n i s e Wheeler, who are certified Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship or PATH i n s t r uc tor s , r u n t h e Reece Center with the help of several volunteers, including certified instructor Heather Hipp. The group provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children with special needs. “We see the ability in kids, not just cerebral palsy or Down syndrome,” Hipps said. “ I l i k e to r i d e m y horse Sally and listen to music when we do unified riding,” Erin said. Erin has been riding for 1 5 yea rs. She ha s D ow n s y nd rome but doesn’t let that get in the way of her skills in the equestrian ring. “This is the one thing that gives her independence,” Bobette said as she nodded towards the riding arena. E r i n i s on e of t h e Reece Center ’s more self-sufficient students that can ride by themselves for part of the le s s on , accord i n g to Denise. Ty pica l ly, st udents have a volunteer who walks alongside them a nd a nother one who gently leads the horse with a rope around the ring. T hat ’s t he ca se for Sa ra h, who has cerebral palsy and limited use of the lower ha lf of her body and uses a wheelchair. But Sarah’s medical diff iculties disappear once she sits upon her favorite horse, Jazz. “I like being here. I like all the volunteers. They all call me ‘Doc-
tor,’” Sarah said with a smile. T he East Coweta H ig h School st udent has been taking lessons at the Reece Center for seven years. Accordi ng to her mother, Sarah got off to a rocky start. “When she first sta r ted ridi ng, Sa ra h couldn’t sit up straight on the horse,” she said. “She was literally bent over the horse, holding on to its mane. But now she sit s up n ice a nd straight.” “ I t m a k e s m e fe e l good that she is always included here and they focus on her abilities, not her disability,” her mother added. In order to tap into the students’ abilities, the center designed two specialized arenas, one for more advanced riders, and the other for children with sensory issues, such as autism. Each riding ring has different exercises for st udents to do wh i le ridi ng t hei r horses, s uc h a s spel l i n g out their names using oversized blocks, throwing a basketball into a net, weaving their horse in bet ween ba r rel s a nd picking up stuffed animals from the tops of the barrels. Ever y t h i ng i n t he arena serves a purpose, Denise said. “Shooting a basketball teaches them hand/ e ye c o ord i n at ion . It also helps strengthen t he k id s’ mu s cle s i n their upper body,” she explained. “Taking the horse over ground poles teaches them balance a nd help s w it h core muscles. Reaching for toys helps with range of motion and strengthen s muscles. Mov i ng the horse diagonal or any direction or going around the barrels teaches them to steer the horse. “When I see children that cannot walk, but let the legs of the horse be their legs I also see the joy and excitement on their faces as they ride around the arena,” D e n i s e a d d e d . “ I t ’s amazing to see them on a 1, 500-pound animal
and have control. Or a student w it h no core muscles finally sits up tall and proud on their horse … it brings tears of happiness to my eyes a nd m a ke s my d ay.” Parents like Chip Glazier agreed. His daughter Mega n h a s t a ken lessons from the Reece Center for Ha ndicapped Horsemanship for five years. “I like what I’ve seen come from her riding here,” Glazier said. “Her dexterity, muscle tone and balance have improved. The kids are bei ng cha l lenged out here, but in a fun way. It works up the child’s confidence.” “ I love com i ng out here and watching the children expand their horizons in a fun environment,” he added. “A lot of times these kids are teased or left out. But here, ever yone is included … the volunteers love on these children. It’s a great thing to see.”
A HOME AWAY FROM HOME T h ere i s a s p e c i a l bond within the conf ines of the Reece Center t h at i ncludes the students, parents, d i rectors , volu nteers and even the horses. “ T he horses some times have a better connection to our kids than we do,” Bobette said. “She might be having a rough day, but once she’s on the horse she seems to relax and calm down.” B obet te a lso g ives credit to Denise, Wade and the center’s volunteers. “The volunteers have been with the riding center for years,” she said. “They’ve sacrificed a lot of time for our kids. Just saying, ‘Thank you,’ is not adequate enough.” “I love them,” Erin added. “They’ve been a part of my life for a very long time.” It ’s a sent i ment echoed by Sarah and Middle footbschool all

jeffrey@newnan.com A girl blowing bubbles depicting scenes from Newnan is being painted on the side of the Atlanta Trek bicycle shop. “I decided a few years ago that I wanted to make larger art that was happy and uplifting,” said muralist Amber Stidham. Two of the scenes in the five bubbles will feature the LINC Trail and Carnegie Library. The scenes for the other three bubbles are not yet decided, Stidham said. Stidham said the property owner, Jim Thomasson, wanted a mural on the building and reached out to her. “ We enjoyed seei ng the other murals painted in downtown Newnan. I expressed that to Robert Hancock, and he was aware of Amber Stidham,” Thomasson said. “I invited her to talk, and we hit it off.” Stidham, a Newnan resident, works as a graphic designer and studio artist. Her work can be seen at va rious busi nesses in Peachtree City and Newnan, namely Karvela’s, Line Creek Brewing Company, and Abide Brewing. Thomasson said that Stidham’s mural work and

Newnan residence made the project come together. “We really like it a lot. It’s a refreshing feeling when I look at it,” Thomasson said. Previously as a volunteer art instructor, Stidham worked with patients at the West Georgia Cancer Center where she
planned and conducted two large community projects, “Body Works” and “Connections.” “That was a catalyst for me to make art that made people happy,” she said. Stidham began work on the mural a week and a half ago. It will be completed in two weeks.
