about 10 or 15 of us who have been deployed before.” The unit is initially going to Fort Stewart for training and ultimately to Afghanistan. One of those first-timers is 20-yearold Semaj Sanders of Chicago. He is assigned to the Newnan National Guard unit, which will train at Fort Stewart before heading to Afghanistan. “I’m nervous, but I’m looking forward to the experience,” Sanders said. “I’m just focused on keeping a positive attitude. As long as our attitude about things is good, we should be good.” Cpl. Matthew Murray, who said he has been overseas as a contractor but not as a National Guardsman, said he feels good about his first deployment. “Bravo has great leadership,” he said as he tested PAS-13 thermal imaging sights before they were loaded onto an equipment truck at the armory. “And we have a really great group of guys who are all familiar with each other because we’ve been working together for a long time.” Among those saying farewell in downtown Newnan was Shana Estabrooks, whose son James was leaving town.

This marks James’ second deployment. The 25-year-old previously served with the 171 3rd Airborne in Italy in 2012. Shana said her son considered leaving the military entirely upon his return home, but went into the National Guard instead. He also serves as a deputy for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Estabrooks, who also served in Afghanistan, said she’s proud of her son, but she knows how hard it can be for a parent. She stood alongside her daughter-in-law and grandson, waving flags and signs of support for James. “T h is is t hei r f i rst ti me goi ng through this,” Shana said. “But this is what we do.” Linda Schulte of Sac City, Iowa, was having lunch at a downtown restaurant with her husband, who did two military tours of duty in Vietnam. They heard about the send-off for Bravo and decided to join the crowd on the nearby street. The Schultes were in the area visiting with family for Thanksgiving. She said it is important to “give the guys a send-off” before they head to Afghanistan.

Bill Headley is a retired constr uction contractor and founder of Headley Construction. At an age when most people are retired, he returned to college, graduating in spring 2017. His wife Anita is most notably known for her phila nthropic work throughout the NewnanCoweta area, and as a supporter and patron of the arts community. She is an active as a member of Central Baptist Church. Each year there is a f loat contest that goes along with the parade. This year, each winner in the following categories will receive a monetary prize and a parade plaque: la rge busi ness , sm a l l business, school, church, and civic/nonprofit. In addition, there will be a People’s Choice Award. This category is an after-parade award specifically designed to drive more people to the city’s Facebook page. “ We ’ r e l o o k i n g t o ma ke this event more socia l media-friendly, “31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
