Tips to avoid holiday scams NTH STAFF REPORTS
news@newnan.com Holiday shopping season is here, a nd t h at pre s ent s plent y of opp or t u n it ie s for sca m mers to spoil your celebrations. But with a little prepa ration a nd vigila nce, shoppers ca n cut down on the threat of becoming scam victims. “ We ’ r e o u t t h e r e buying, and scammers a re tr y i ng to take a chunk of that,” sa id K at her i ne Hut t , national spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau. She sa id most holiday sca m s a re va r iations on scams we see t h roug hout t he yea r, but there a re some that are unique to the season. Many involve online shopping, which 55 percent of all consumers will use this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. “The people who are t r y i n g to s te a l s t u f f know there is going to be h ig her t ra ff ic a nd more people who a re n o t i n t e r n e t- s a v v y,” sa id M ich ael Br uemmer, vice president of con su mer protec t ion for t he credit repor ting agency Experian. Here are some of the most common holiday s c a m s , a c c ord i n g to the BBB and Experian:
Gift card scams
G i f t c a rd s a r e t h e most popula r items on holiday wish lists, with 60 percent of con s u mer s s u r ve ye d saying they would like to receive one this holiday season. That creates many opportunities for fraud. The BBB advises g i f t c a rd pu rc h a ser s to look at cards before buying them in order to make sure the packaging hasn’t been tamp ere d w it h a nd t h at t h e c a r d ’s p e r s o n a l identif ication number is not exposed. Scammers somet i mes pu l l the account and PINs from cards, then place the cards back on r ac k s a nd wa it u nt i l the cards are purchased. Then they can strip the value out of t he c a rd s before t he purchaser is aware of what happened. T he Fe der a l Tr ade Commission warns against using gift ca rds to pay for a nything other than merchandise from the compa ny t h at i ssued the card. “A nyone who dema nds pay ment by gi ft ca rd is a lways, always, always a scammer,” w rote Jen n i fer Leach, assistant director of the FTC’s Division of Consumer and Business Education, in a blog post earlier this year. The FTC also encourages victims of g i ft ca rd sca ms to report the incidents to the agency.
Fake retail websites “Any malicious link c a n be m ade to lo ok l i ke A m a z on . com ,” Experian's Bruemmer said. The sites often have similar web addresses – “amazon-shop.com,” for example – and look v i s u a l ly ident ic a l to t h e re t a i l site s t h e y are copying. But if you attempt to buy a product, you’re just giving s c a m m e r s yo u r p e rsonal data and a credit card number.
Donation scams Li ke other online scams, donation scams of te n r e ly on ph ony websites designed to lo ok l i ke t he re a l thing. “ Yo u h a v e t o p a y rea lly close attention t hat you’re not goi ng to the wrong site and not click ing on the l i n k s t h at a re su spicious,” Bruemmer said. Not all of those scams are digital. Unsolicited phone calls are another common sou rce of phony donation requests, accord i ng to A A R P ’s Fraud Watch Network. Charities can be verified through such sites a s Cha rit y Nav igator or Give.org.

ington gravitated towards the stuffed animal section where Taylor found just what she was looking for - a giant stuffed llama. “That’s going to be the first thing you play with when you get home, isn’t it?” Washington asked Taylor with a grin on his face. “ Ye s ,” she sa id a s she leaned over to hug the stuffed animal that barely fit into the shopping cart. T he ch i ld ren weren’t the only ones enjoying the moment. “Just to see the smiles on their faces and the hugs that they give us is worth it,” Deputy Chief Mark Cooper said.
“We look forward to this day every year.” “This reminds us that it’s better to give than receive,” Chief Buster Meadows added. “A lot of children would not get anything at all or very little on Christmas. We want to make sure they have something waiting for them under the tree.” According to Cooper, officers work with the Coweta County School System to identify children whose families may have fallen on hard times. T he police depa r tment holds fundraisers and uses monetary donations to fund the annual event. They then
equally divide the money and give officers a prepaid gift card to take the kids Christmas shopping. Nothing is off-limits. Children can shop for toys – and clothes and shoes. T his yea r, the Newna n Walmart partnered up with NPD and set up a “Toy Shop” that included rows of toys. The two organizations also f lew in Santa Claus for the day to visit with the children. “This is awesome,” said Walmart store manager Tanner Kramer. “It makes my day knowing these kids will have a great Christmas.” The children’s relatives were overwhelmed by the
show of support. Shannon Beasley walked around the store with her you nger brot her Cha rles Tu r ner, 1 1 , a nd I nv. V ic McPhie. “I think it’s great that all these police officers come together and host events like this for the children and the community. You don’t see that very often, but this has been great. I love it,” Beasley said. “We want these kids to know we’re their friends all the time, not just at Christmas. But we hope they have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” Meadows said.
Travel scams T h ere a re a lo t of on l i n e travel offers around the holidays, but if a travel offer looks too good to be true, it probably is, Bruemmer said. Fake travel websites are also common. People may go to a booking site that may look like a name brand site, but it’s a spoof ing site, he said.
‘Letters from Santa’ scams T here a re retailers who legitimately sell “letters from Santa” that you can have sent to your grandchildren or child ren . B ut t h i s concept a l so can be a rich trove for identity thieves. Identity i n formation of m i n or s c a n b e p a r t ic u l a rly valuable, she said. Parents may not check the credit reports of their children for yea rs, a nd as the children become adults and check their own records, t hey may sudden ly f i nd t hat t hei r cred it rat i ng h a s been ruined by identity thieves.

ra ised ga rden beds on wheels w i ll be added later. T he work and equipment has an estimated value of $75,000, according to the foundation. The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation is a national partner with Niagara Cares, the company's corporate giving and volunteering arm, said Michelle Ross, human resources manager at the Newnan bottling plant. “Our goal is always to give back to the community,” Ross said. The local project is the fourth that Niagara has done with the foundation. Though the four projects, located in four different communities near Niagara plants, aren’t exactly t he sa me, t hey a ll a re focused on youth organizations, she said. Niagara employees were volunteering on their own time, according to Ross. “I just put out a signup sheet and people just come and volunteer on their day off,” she said. “We love helping the community and the Boys and Girls Club,” said Niagara employee Stacie Frazier. “Volunteering is important.” “I think it’s a great thing for t he com mu n it y,” sa id Niaga ra employee Tawanna Culpepper.
Data theft You don’t have to be taken by a typical scam to be a theft victim online during the holidays. Experian’s recently completed 2018 hol iday su r vey showed 42 percent of people surveyed don’t shop on a personal, protected internet connection. I nstead, t hey use public Wi-Fi or a connection without spam or malware protection. That can give thieves an opening to intercept and steal data, including credit card numbers, bank account information and personal data. Shoppers should always look for websites that use addresses b e g i n n i n g w i t h “ h t t p s : //,” Bruemmer said. The “s” after the “http” assures the site is using a secure, encrypted connection to your computer.
