2018 Kiwanis Coweta County Fair - 3

WELCOME TO THE KIWANIS COWETA COUNTY FAIR As the Chairman of the Kiwanis Coweta Fair, I want to invite and encourage you to attend this year’s Fair. My grandchildren range from 8 to 15 years old, and every year they ask, “How many times can we go to the fair this year?” And every year I say, “As many times as your mother will let you.” Then they ask, “How many friends may I bring?” I can tell you the price of $25 for a mega pass is small price to pay to see the joy on their face and hear the stories they tell. This year, we have enlarged the midway walkways, and several new rides will be introduced. I promise you will be impressed with the rides on the midway. If you like to see the all of the contest entries of people trying to win Blue Ribbons, this year’s display will be the best you have seen in years. The Coweta 4-H and County Agent, Stephanie Butcher, are producing one of the best Blue Ribbon Fairs ever. If you did not see the blacksmith,

Rust and Flame, last year, you are in for a real treat. If you have never touched a snake, you are in luck; Southeast Reptile Rescue will be back to teach the difference between safe and unsafe snakes. I want to thank the County Commissioners for being our partners. We could not put on the Fair without their help. You will not find a cleaner, better maintained, better landscaped and family-friendly fairground anywhere close by. Sheriff Yeager, and his staff, will again be there in full force to ensure everyone is on their best manners. If you accidentally drop trash on the ground, a Boy Scout will be there to pick it up. If you are hungry, the 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts have concession stands to feed you Bring the family to the Fair. If you are not glad you did, just let me know. -Gary T. Welden Chairman of the Fair

WELCOME TO THE KIWANIS COWETA COUNTY FAIR

Local agencies get their fair share BY SUSAN MAYER DAVIS

Each year, multiple beneficiaries receive proceeds from the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair. L ast year, $180,000 was disbursed among 38 community agencies and organizations. This year’s recipients are listed in the 2018 Kiwanis Coweta County Fair Book, available for viewing at cowetacountyfair.org. In return for the donation, recipients of county fair money give back through volunteer work, such as selling tickets or emptying trash at the fair. The impact of the fair-generated donations on charitable organizations takes on many facets, depending on the organization, but the money raised by the Kiwanis Club stays in Coweta. Some of the local agencies that benefit include:

ANGEL’S HOUSE: A safe haven for more than 220 children since 2004, Angel’s House was built by volunteers using community donations to shelter girls aged 13-18 who need emergency care after being in the foster care system. “The support of the Kiwanis has been exceptional,” says Board President Kelley Welden. “Because of their support, we can provide a loving home that, with the guidance of house parents, can provide the safety, structure and supervision that the girls don’t have at home.”

OTHER BENEFICIARIES INCLUDE: • • • • • • • • •

Boy Scouts - Coweta District Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts - Local Bridging the Gap Community Outreach Christian City Children's Village CLICK ( Adult Literacy Program) Communities in Schools C.O.R.R.A.L. Coweta CASA, Inc. Coweta Community Foundation

SAMARITAN CLINIC: The Samaritan Clinic serves uninsured and medically underserved adults in Coweta County. “The Newnan Kiwanis Club has faithfully and generously supported Coweta Samaritan Clinic since its inception in 2011,” says Executive Director Lou Graner. “Their gift has enabled the clinic to provide high quality health care and compassionate support to more than 1,400 of our uninsured neighbors.”

THE FERST FOUNDATION: Ferst Readers is a nonprofit that prepares preschool children for reading and learning success. Children registered for the Ferst Readers literacy program receive an age-appropriate book mailed to their home each month until their fifth birthday. Says Ann Camp of Ferst Foundation Newnan: “The grant from Kiwanis Newnan goes a long way toward providing books for the more than 2,700 preschool children in Coweta who get an early start in literacy through our gifts.”

WELCOME TO THE KIWANIS COWETA COUNTY FAIR

Safety first NTH STAFF REPORTS

Safety is a top concern at the Coweta County Fair, according to Gary Welden with the Newnan Kiwanis Club. Fair planners from the Kiwanis and the Coweta County Board of Commissioners—full partners in the event— make sure that everything from the integrity of the rides and food services to cleanliness of the venue and security of guests is at peak quality. State Inspector Owen Bullard with the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office lives in Coweta and brings his grandchildren to the fair every year. He spends two days doing the inspections, according to Welden. Bullard, who worked in the amusement field before he became a fire marshal inspector, inspects all of the rides and overall fair operations while county inspectors perform spot inspections.

“I pay close attention to the details,” said Bullard. “After all, my own grandchildren ride these rides.” “You have a very safe fair,” Bullard added. Primetime Amusements—the carnival company that provides rides, food and games for the Coweta Fair—also contracts with an independent company to provide maintenance and safety. The presence of law enforcement ensures that fairgoers are safe exploring the grounds, said Walden. If anyone sees anything that seems unsafe, it should be reported, said Weldon. “If you see it, you say something about it.” “Our priorities are safety f irst, f a m i ly-f r iend ly enter t a i n ment a nd r a i si n g money to don at e to lo c a l or g a n i z at ion s ,” he a dde d .
