‘Mrs. Bette and Mrs. Teri’ celebrate 40 years of Young Artists BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com For t y yea rs ago, Bette Hick ma n was a transplant from Miami who loved art and was concer ned t hat t here we r e fe w a r t te a c h ers in Coweta County Schools. “I wa s rea l ly upset that there was no art teacher in the element a r y s c h o ol s ,” H ic km a n s a id . “ I d id my student teach i ng i n Mia m i i n t he ver y sa me school that I went to a nd I had a n a rt teacher – a nd I’m o l d ,” s h e s a i d f r o m her art classroom this week. She wa s a member of the Newnan Coweta A r t A s s o c i at ion a nd some of t he people who came to the adult art classes were bringing their children, so the association began to discuss having a rt cl a sse s for ch i ld ren . T he adu lt a r t te ac hers didn’t particularly want to teach children, but Hickman did. She bega n teaching children’s art lessons

jeffrey@newnan.com Chickens, ducks and turkeys f locked to the Coweta Fairgrounds for the Chattahoochee Valley Poultry Association’s 16th annual show. “Generally we have 3,000 spectators come in through the gates,” said Bryan Massengale, president of CVPA. The event included a competition for the best bird and a swap meet where vendors came to sell live poultry, artwork and food. Shawn Sanford, from Adairsville, has attended the show for the last seven years. “We enjoy the people,” he said. Sanford had five birds competing and sold four birds at the swap meet. Skywarn Storm Spotter class Feb. 28, 6 p.m., Free A free Skywarn Storm Spotter class will be held in the Coweta County Commissioners Meeting Room, upstairs at 37 Perry St. in Newnan. Skywarn is a volunteer program where volunteers provide timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. The class will be hosted by the Coweta Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service Peachtree City Office.
