Abby’s Angels Foundation Rainbow Run & Family Fun Day
Berlin Airlift Program April 25, 6 p.m.
Whitesburg Public Library will host a free program commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. The program will be presented by Eddie Ide, an Air Force veteran who planned and participated in a 70-day Berlin Airlift Anniversary tour of Europe with the C-54 aircraft. His “Saving the City” talk is a result of his ongoing avocation in telling how aviation changed the map of Europe by saving the city of West Berlin from a Communist takeover in 1948 and 1949. Ide has researched the airlift, interviewing many military participants, as well as German recipients of the supplies. Whitesburg Public Library is located next door to Whitesburg Elementary School. For more information, contact Library Manager Ruth Fuller at 770-834-0713.

Jesus Christ is not some powerless, dead historical figure. He is alive. He is present. If you are thirsty, He is the Living Water. If you are hungry, He is the Bread of Life. He protects. He intercedes. He fills us up. He satisfies our souls. He is awesome in strength and mighty in power. He is the Lamb of God. He is the Lion of Judah. He is the Indescribable Gift. He is our Great High Priest. He is our Mediator. He is our Hope. He is our Peace. He is our Burden Bearer. He is our Good Shepherd. He is our Refuge. He is our Strength. He is our Rock. He is our Sword. He is our Shield. He is our Way Maker. He is our Miracle Worker. He is our Wonderful Counselor. He is our Everlasting Father. He is Lord of lords. He is King of kings. There is no one beside Him, no one above Him. There is none like Him. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble. He is great and greatly to be praised! If we refuse to praise Him, the rocks will pipe up in our place (Luke 19:40). Stir up the embers within, and blaze forth His glory!

Nixon Centre project will add secondary performance space BY REBECCA LEFTWICH BECKY@NEWNAN.COM
A
n estimated 130,000 people passed through the Nixon Centre for the Arts last season, and upcoming renovations will mean space for more people, programs and performances. Engineering design work is underway for the project, and work is scheduled to begin in August, pending approval by the Coweta County Board of Education. Additions will include a kitchen, storage, parking and a multi-purpose space that will serve as a secondary performance area. Estimated additions and limited modifications to the existing facility will cost an estimated $5.5 million, and the work is expected to be complete in the spring of 2020. Coweta School Superintendent Steve Barker told board of education members at their April meeting about plans for the secondary performance space. “As you know, we’ve needed that multi-purpose space… a large room where if you needed to host a regional or state competition for band or chorus, a group could be in a location warming up, getting ready to be judged,” Barker said. “They can do that in a standard room as long as it’s big enough and sound doesn’t travel between walls.” After reviewing the Nixon Centre’s needs, Barker said staff hit upon an idea to make the additional space into some-
thing that would provide additional benefits and opportunities for students. “What we began to talk about (making) that multi-purpose space serve as an additional performance space for smaller performances,” Barker said. The room would have traditional floors and walls, but it would be equipped with a performance-grade sound system and lighting. It would not be an auditorium, Barker said, but a black box-type of secondary event and performance space. “You would be able to bring in small group performances, or have an artist doing a master class for our students, or an author doing a reading,” Barker said. “That environment would allow you a space to do that. You could actually accommodate two groups performing at one time.” He said he and arts center director Cathe Nixon have visited a facility with a similar setup to the one planned for the Nixon Centre. “That is the project we’re going to draw up, the project we’re going to look at going out to bid with,” Barker said. “I’m always amazed at the Nixon Centre and what the staff there can pull off and what students can do. But this will even take it to another level.” Barker told board members he expects to bring the project to them for approval in mid to late summer.
PHOTO BY REBECCA LEFTWICH The Coweta County School System’s Nixon Centre for Performing and Visual Arts soon will undergo renovation and additions to the existing facility, including a secondary performance space.
