2019 KIWANIS COWETA COUNTY FAIR
Letter from the chairman As the Chairman of the Kiwanis Coweta Fair, It is my pleasure to invite you and encourage you to attend this year’s Fair. If you want to save some money, we have three ways for you to save: 1. Thursday September 19, 2019, Sunkist is sponsoring a preview to the midway. Admission is free and Armbands will be $20.00. 2. On Monday September 23, 2019, Dr. Pepper is sponsoring free admissions with armbands being $25.00. 3. If you plan ahead, you can buy a Mega Pass for $25.00. A Mega Pass will save you $10.00 on Friday or Saturday night. This year will be the second year we have enjoyed the wider midways. The response last year was very positive. I believe it helps people and families move throughout the fair more easily. If you are like me and enjoy the Old-Fashioned Blue Ribbon Fair and the 4-H Animals, County Agent Stephanie Butcher and her staff will not let you down. The exhibit halls will be open Friday, September 20th
thru Saturday, September 28th. If you want to know more about the Blue Ribbon Fair, go on the fair website and look under “Fair Book” or “Events”. This year we have plenty to do on the midway. Southeastern Reptileall kinds of reptiles, Shark Encounter - an educational show with a man swimming in a tank with live sharks and Sam’s Path Petting Zoo - a tent full of animals to pet and feed will all be there! As always I want to thank the Coweta County Commissioners for being our partner. We could not continue to have such a wonderful fair without their partnership. You will not find a cleaner, better maintained, better landscaped, family-friendly fairgrounds anywhere. Our Sheriff, Len Wood, and his deputies will again be in full force to ensure everyone is on their best behavior. The local Boy Scouts will be ready to pick up any trash may be dropped. Again, let me invite you to enjoy a good old, family-friendly county fair. If you are not glad you did, just let me

on Thursday, Butcher is on the ground floor, making sure all the moving parts are working together. “It’s a monumental process from beginning to end,” she said. “We have a tremendous amount of community volunteers which help make it all possible.” Staff from the UGA Cooperative Extension program, along with 4-H volunteers and master gardener volunteers, are working throughout the week to get it set up – bringing in exhibits, getting them set up and having judging completed by Friday. “There’s a lot more that goes on than most people realize,” she said. Growing up, Butcher said her favorite fair was the Georgia National Fair, and said Coweta does a faithful job of reproducing it on a smaller scale. “We do our best to have something for everyone – kids, teens, parents and grandparents,” she said. While many families show up ready for a night of food and rides, Butcher says many are missing out on a multitude of other offerings that help make the fair a showcase for the entire community. "People often miss the educational exhibits because it's not as close to the midway,” she said. “They often say they had no idea these exhibits were here." A heavy emphasis on agricultural awareness makes up a big part of the fair. With a county that keeps growing, Butcher says more residents than ever need to learn where their food comes from and what’s involved. “People used to talk about going to their old family farm, but those days seem further removed than ever,” she said. "So many haven’t been around farm animals before, so we have volunteers to help answer any questions.” The fair is a place where residents can return to those roots and help plant the seeds for future generations of
Cowetans. With a group of volunteers, 4-H’ers can help showcase their project animals and impart those skills to newcomers to get them interested. “It’s not just seeing a calf or baby chick, it’s the conversations we have and FAIR • 16

questions we can answer,” she said. "4-H volunteers are in the ag building to help answer questions about their project animals, and teach others the skills that they have learned in hopes of educating others and generating more interest in the program.” A number of community groups are involved and host educational booths, including the Coweta Beekeepers Association, The Cattlemen's Association and the Coweta Master Gardeners, who, on the first Saturday of the fair, provide a much-needed service of identifying plant samples at the “Ask the Master Gardener” booth. “New homeowners often have plants they can’t identify, and the Master Gardeners are able to answer their questions,” Butcher said. The fair will host several unique attractions this year, including the opportunity to encounter live sharks. Attendees can experience the only traveling shark encounter in the United States. The narrator speaks to the crowd while
swimming in the tank with the sharks. After the show ends, viewers can visit with the diver, ask questions and view the sharks up close. The Southeast Reptile Rescue group will also return this year, offering viewers the ability to walk through their trailer to see the snakes, turtles and other reptiles. As head of the Extension program, Butcher says the exhibit does a great service by educating the public on snakes. “It’s one of my favorite presentations since we get a tremendous amount of calls about snakes,” she said. Other exhibits include the Lumberjack and Lumberjill competitions, livestock shows coordinated by 4-H, beauty pageants, live music on the weekends and a gingerbread house contest. After 15 years of being involved with the fair, Butcher said one of her favorite parts is seeing all of the families enjoying the event together. “Every entry to the fair supports our community,” she said. “Everything we make goes back to community. It’s an important fundraiser for many groups who, without the support of the county and Kiwanis, can’t do what they do best – serve others.”
