Head coach Bryan Hansel Season: 4th Bryan Hansel enters his fourth season as the head coach at Allegany, having led the Campers to a 23-10 record and a berth in the West Region championship game in his first two seasons. He was named interim head coach on June 7, 2016, a day after his former head coach Tom Preaskorn resigned, and was appointed to the position on a permanent basis on Jan. 20, 2017. The 2005 Cumberland Times-News Area Player of the Year, Hansel graduated from Allegany in 2006 after helping the Campers win the 2005 Maryland 1A state championship with a 14-0 record. He starred at tight end and linebacker, then continued his football career for four years, graduating from Shepherd University. Hansel, a member of Preaskorn’s Allegany coaching staff for four seasons, said on the day of his appointment by Allegany County Public Schools, “I think it’s an honor. I feel very privileged. This has been a dream of mine since I started coaching. I feel lucky to coach at a school that has the great tradition that Allegany has. “I just feel very lucky right now.” As an assistant coach, Hansel

coached the varsity tight ends and linebackers. Hansel is the 14th head coach in Allegany football history.

Allegany: Season will start with a challenge at Lackey Our players are closer “than they have been in

CONTINUED FROM 11 year. We can’t say that was the case the previous four or five years.” Yet, even with what appears to be a friendly playoff system, Hansel isn’t thinking past tomorrow’s practice. “With our numbers, it’s pretty much week to week,” he said. “The primary goal is to get to the playoffs, and, again, that way we have a chance. So, from there, we go week to week and stay healthy. If we stay healthy, we will be competitive. With 21 guys that could be tough, but the ultimate goal is to make the playoffs.” After opening the past two seasons with a home win over Dunbar and a game at Dunbar that was suspended and canceled after its start, the Campers open this season with yet another tough opponent, as they travel to Indian Head to take on Lackey. “I think it’s nice,” Hansel said. “With the new playoff schedule, I feel now you can always take the step to challenge yourself. I like getting through the hot days of August and having a challenging game like that right away. It breaks the monotony, wakes everybody up and gets the season going. “We hope to continue to keep that. With a new league on the horizon, we’ll have games already built in, but we hope to keep having games like this. Hopefully, we can branch out a little further and pick up more games like that.” Presently, the strength of this new Campers team is easy to see, and it begins with Christian Welch and the rest of the skill players on the Alco offense. “With Christian Welch and Trevan WELCH Powell,” Hansel said, “both a year older and stronger and faster, and with Matt Fuzie in the backfield, one of our stronger players, we’ll have good speed. “We know what Christian brings. He’s one of the best, if not the best player in the area. To have two players like that on the corner helps us find the edge.”

the past couple of years or so. It seems like at the end-of-camp gathering, there were a lot of kids there.

Bryan Hansel, Allegany head coach

Running back Trevon Powell looks for an opening on the outside. That being said, the biggest unanswered questions begin with, “Two (returning) starting offensive lineman,” Hansel said. “Replacing the center, the guards and the tight end is really our focus right now POWELL and we’re looking to get better day by day. Obviously, those three positions are huge.” Lost to graduation at those slots

were Riley Stewart and Amadeus Swinton at guards, Jacob Dent at tight end and Parker Preaskorn at center. Small numbers bring a lack of depth, yet small numbers bring tighter unity, and Hansel seems to feel that unity is this team’s strongest characteristic at this point. “Our players are closer than they have been in the past couple of years or so,” he said. “It seems like at the endof-camp gathering, there were a lot of kids there. They have fun together and hang out together, which helps you on the field. You tend not to let the guy

beside you down when he’s your friend and you care about him.” The Allegany offense is being directed by quarterback Grant Cain (6-foot3 170 pounds, Jr.), who is one of the best baseball players in the area, having represented Western Maryland on Team Maryland in this summer’s Big 26 event. “Grant is a threesport athlete and the CAIN athleticism is there,” said Hansel. “We just have to fine-tune the Wing-T steps from his pitching and get him throwing a football. He takes charge in the offensive huddle.” The Allegany backfield is manned by three players who will play all three positions. Welch (6-0, 200, Sr.) was the Campers’ leading rusher with 996 yards on 154 carries (6.5 average) with 11 touchdowns. “Welch is a halfback who will get fullback carries,” said Hansel. “To me, he is the next guy up for Allegany. He is one of those guys who will challenge for player of the year in the area. He’s in much better shape and is stronger and faster. “He’s our focal-point guy and we expect a lot from him.” Trevan Powell (5-9 195, Jr.) started as a sophomore and rushed for 566 yards and four touchdowns on 69 carries (8.2 average) and caught a pair of passes

CONTINUED FROM 12 for 20 yards. “After Game 3, Trevan took a big step and we expect even bigger things,” said Hansel. “His weight and speed numbers are insane. He wants to play college football and he’ll work for it. I expect a big season from him.” Matt Fuzie (5-9 175, Jr.) will get the first reps at fullback for the Campers as Hansel says, “He is one of the strongest kids on our team with a 330 bench. He’s much faster and will make the transition in the backfield with his offseason work.” J.D. Shambaugh (5-7 165, Sr.), who carried 10 times for 52 FUZIE yards and a touchdown last year, is the backup running back, as is Trevor Milburn (5-9 150, So.), while Caden Weaver (5-8 150, Sr.) is the backup at split end. Along the line, the left tackles are Caleb Diehl (6-2 245. Jr.) and Joe Court (6-3 225, SHAMBAUGH Jr.). At guard exists a four-player competition, with one of those players likely ending up at tackle. Tyler Dunmeyer (5-11 155, Sr.), according to Hansel, “is not a big kid, is not overly strong, but is a kid who works hard and is a tough SUESSE kid.” Robbie Suesse (5-8 225, Sr.) is a returning starter, who also played defensive line, saw time when Preaskorn was out to injury and “is the strongest kid on the team with a 500pound squat, who could end up at tackle.” Ryan O’Neal (5-9 225, Jr.), who started defensively last year, is “our emotional leader,” according to Hansel. “He keeps things kind of loose and kind

to the weight program. He put on 15, 20 pounds he really needed to, and we need him to take that extra step for us.

Bryan Hansel, Allegany head coach

Trevor Milburn makes a tackle against Silver Oak. of crazy.” Dillon Hogamier (5-9 205, Jr.) “got a lot stronger and works very hard. We see good things and hope to see good things from him.” The starting center is Dylan Clark (5-6 170, Sr.). O’NEAL “For his size, his weight-room numbers are impressive,” said Hansel. “He’s a kid that really wants to play there, and it’s his job and I don’t see anybody taking it from him. He’s really worked for it.” At right tackle, Ryen Baker (6-3, 330, CLARK Jr.) is “the biggest kid on our team,” said Hansel. “He’s

the kid with the best chance to play college football. He hit the weight room and went on a diet, and it shows and it’s probably the best shape he’s been in. “We’re expecting a two-way player and a big step up for him BAKER this year.” Anthony Joseph (5-11 195, Jr.) is a tight end, while Dorian Terrell (6-1 185, Sr.), who caught four passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, is the split end. “Dorian is another kid who put in to the weight program,” TERRELL Hansel said. “He put on 15, 20 pounds he really needed to,

and we need him to take that extra step for us.” The Allegany defense will be led by inside linebacker Welch, who repeated on first-team All-Area his junior season. He led the Campers in tackles with 38 solos, 46 assists, and 84 total. He also had five tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. Welch had one interception and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown. He also recovered two fumbles. He will be joined on the inside by Hogamier, while Fuzie and Shambaugh are the outside linebackers. Fuzie had 69 tackles HOGAMIER (22 solo) last year with five for loss, including one quarterback sack. At nose guard will be Diehl, Baker and Suesse. The tackles are O’Neal, Joseph and Court. In the secondary, Terrell and Weaver are at the corners, with Milburn also DIEHL fighting for a spot, with Powell at safety. Welch will handle the kickoffs, while Cain will kick conversions and do the punting. Mike Burke is sports editor of the Cumberland Times-News. Follow him on Twitter @MikeBurkeCTN.
