Falcons won’t be satisfied with just making the playoffs this year Led by Marley, experienced Frankfort wants to go deeper in the postseason MIKE BURKE

2018 Results

MBURKE@TIMES-NEWS.COM

SHORT GAP, W.VA. — After a threeyear absence, the 2018 Frankfort Falcons returned to the West Virginia Class AA state playoffs and found it to their liking; so much so that, just as Oliver Twist decided to go back for more, the Falcons, too, decided that they would like to go back for some more as well. And since most of them are back to make up the 2019 Frankfort Falcons football team, that would seem to bode well for a successful second season back under head coach Kevin Whiteman, the second-winningest coach in school history. The 2018 Falcons were 8-3 in Whiteman’s ninth season as the head coach, and first after a two-year absence from the sideline, and fell to state power Bridgeport, 49-13, in the opening round for the playoffs. “It was huge,” Whiteman said of the Falcons’ success last season. “It was my first season back and we were coming off two losing seasons. The kids set a goal of a winning season and making the playoffs and they worked their tails off and got that far. We lost in the first round, but it was a huge step for our program. “The boys got a taste of it and now they want to go farther. Their goal is to get to the playoffs and advance once we get there. They’ve worked very hard in the offseason and in the past couple of weeks. Barring injuries, I see nothing but good things this season.” The Falcons return 10 starters on offense, nine on defense and their two kickers on special teams from the team that opened the regular season 5-0 before dropping a 27-21 game at Mountain Ridge. The only other loss was to Keyser, 27-13. That the Falcons return talented

ing to get to know each other all over again. “Experience, no question about it — just the amount of returning starters is the strength of the team,” Whiteman said. “The experience is invaluable. You don’t have that kind of luxury every year, so to have that this year is just a bright spot.” And it has made for a seamless transition to this season, beginning almost immediately after the 2018 season concluded. “Real good,” Whiteman said. “The whole offseason was good. We don’t have the luxury of having a period during the school day for football, but from January until now it’s been really good for kids who don’t play other sports being there. They have a good attitude and have really been working hard because they know the goal and want to work hard to get there. “They’ve been very attentive, and as a coach, it’s been very rewarding

because we have a lot of good kids who work hard and who are not any problems. It is truly a blessing to coach where I coach.” While familiarity may breed contempt in psychology, Whiteman is seeing first-hand that it breeds crispness in football, as the Falcons have held one of their most efficient summer camps. “To look where we were last year at this time with me coming back in after a couple of years and the kids having to learn my system ... This year things are clicking,” he said. “They know what I want and it’s moving a lot faster — offensively and defensively. And they’re interested in coming out every day and being the best they can be.

Head coach Kevin Whiteman Season: 10th Kevin Whiteman begins his 10th season as the head coach at Frankfort, where he is No. 2 all-time in victories and winning percentage, behind only Greg Phillips (14 years, 108-41, .725). Whiteman’s Falcons have a 69-34 record, good for a .670 winning percentage. His teams have reached the Class AA playoffs six times in nine years, and the 2014 team became the first in school history to reach the state championship game, a 43-7 loss to Bridgeport. Frankfort: Season opener is at Moorefield CONTINUED FROM 6 “All that experience coming back makes the teaching aspect of it a lot nicer.” While the outlook last year at Camp Falcon was hopeful, it is one more of expectation this year. “They’ve had a taste of it,” Whiteman said of his players. “They know what it’s about. They were content last year because of the previous two seasons. They were just happy to make the playoffs. But as soon as it was over they realized they wanted more and immediately set their sights higher.”

Whiteman believes the key to the season, which begins Friday, Aug. 30 at Moorefield, comes in the cohesiveness and the belief his players have displayed since they first gathered in January. “I keep telling the boys this: If they embrace the concept of being a team the way they did last year — Don’t care who gets the credit — that will be big,” said the Frankfort coach. “We have a big banner in the locker room, and the kids wear bracelets that say ‘I Will So

Frankfort: Jansen Knotts, Kolton Kelly will quarterback behind experienced offensive line CONTINUED FROM 11 We Can’. “Those words are so simple but so powerful. It goes so deep to what that means and the kids have embraced that and I think they will have success.” The black and white of it in football is the key to any season begins up front on both sides of the ball where the Falcons are supplied with an ample amount of experience and size. The offensive line MCCOY will be anchored by center Greg McCoy (6-foot, 220 pounds. Sr.), a returning starter, whom Whiteman says “brings a lot to the table. He is an emotional player and leader. His biggest asset is keeping teammates in the right mindset to play the WALTERS

game with emotion.” At guard is Matt Walters (5-9, 255, Sr.), John Bittinger (5-11, 190, Jr.) and Jake Logsdon (5-10, 185, Jr.). “We have a good rotation with those three,” said Whiteman. “That’s a lot of experience coming back.” The tackles are led by Hayden Stein (6-1, 285, Sr.), a second-team All-Area selection from a year ago, and returning starter David Blanco (6-4, 290, Sr.). Jacob Batchelor (5-10, 235, STEIN Sr.) and Jacob Wilkins (6-1, 250, Sr.) also saw action in the trenches as juniors. At tight end are Brock Robinette (6-0, 205, Jr.) and Shaun Stallings (5-9, 175, Sr.). As a sophomore, Robinette caught three passes for 62 yards BLANCO (20.7 yards per catch), with his long reception

being 30 yards. The split ends are Andy Westfall (5-10, 165, Jr.), Tyler Corwell (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Jake Clark (6-0, 160, Jr.). Westfall caught one pass last year for 13 yards. At quarterback will be Jansen Knotts (6-3, 210, Sr.) and Kolton Kelly (5-11, 175, Sr.). Knotts played some quarterback last year, as well as split end and, in fact, was the Falcons’ leading receiver a year ago KNOTTS with 14 receptions for 160 yards (11.4 ypc). Kelly was a tight end last season. Marley (5-11, 215, Sr.), the first-team All-Area halfback of a year ago, will be the Frankfort fullback this season. Marley led the Falcons ground game KELLY with 1,281 yards on 148 carries (8.7 yards per carry) with 19 touchdowns.

“Nick really hits the trap and the belly and will have success at fullback,” said Whiteman. “I look for him to be an all-state type player for us.” The halfbacks are Jansen Moreland (6-2, 200, Jr.), Peyton Shan- MARLEY holtz (5-9, 150, Sr.), J.J. Blank (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Connor Parish (5-9, 155, Sr.). Moreland rushed for 139 yards on 23 carries (6.0 avg,) and three touchdowns last year, Shanholtz for 96 yards on 21 carries (4.6 avg.) and four touchdowns, while Parish gained 68 yards on eight carries (8.5) with a touchdown, and Blank 54 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. The defense will be led by David Blanco along the front line. Like Marley, he has colleges looking at him and he will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.” The other interior linemen are Stein, Jacob Wilkins and Kyle Owens (6-3, 270, WILKINS Jr.). Blanco was the Falcons’ second-leading tackler last season with 34 solo and 21 assists, with a teamhigh 4.5 sacks. Wilkins had 10 total tackles and Stein four.
