Head coach Aaron Rule Season: 1st Aaron Rule returns to the Hampshire coaching staff, this time as the head coach of the Trojans, succeeding Darren Grace, who held the position for the previous 15 years. Rule was named head coach at Hampshire in February, returning to Romney from Putnam County, West Virginia where he was assistant football coach and head track coach at Poca High School. Rule was the defensive coordinator for the Dots for three seasons, coaching the linebackers and wide receivers. He was also in charge of Poca’s strength and conditioning program. He coached at Hampshire in 2013-14 under Grace following a coaching stint at Alderson Broaddus University. Rule is a graduate of Herbert Hoover High School and West Virginia State University.

Hampshire: Key will be staying healthy CONTINUED FROM 5 passes last year for 15 yards and a touchdown and will be a key defensively. “We need him to serve as our captain back there (at safety) and make the right calls,” Rule said. Alex Pritts (5-9, 190, So.) is a running back and, according to Rule, “a hardnosed linebacker who we have expectations for.” Jacob Whelan (5-9, 150, Sr.) is at slot receiver, having caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown last season. Barret See (5-10, 175, Jr.) is a lineman who Rule has high expectations for on both sides of the ball. “We have a young offensive line,” Rule said. “But we have two coaches who are coaching their butts off. It’s a great thing to have sophomores and juniors on the offensive line because that’s a bright future for us. We have seniors who are stepping in and being leaders and they all know they are getting coached up by their coaches, who know what they are doing.” Among the players who are in the mix along both lines are Alex Shumaker (5-8, 210, Jr.), Brian Stump (5-11, 215, Sr.), Seth Dunham (5-11, 235, So.), Dakota Stickley (5-8, 215, Jr.), Connor Hott (5-8, 240, So.), Zack Hill (6-0, 260, So.), Michael Gilman (5-8, 215, So.) and Sam Moreland (6-0, 215, Jr.). Hicks will do kicking and punting. “Again, I think I have to go back to their attitude,” Rule said. “I want to get them to the point that if a negative play takes place, they’re still hustling and not hang-

ing their head and that they live to play the next down. The most important play is always going to be the next play. There’s no room for hanging their heads or sulking. These kids have been very energetic and that’s a positive step in the right direction.” The biggest key for the Trojans is the biggest key for every team’s season. Although staying healthy may be more imperative for the growth process for a team such as Hampshire’s. “Staying healthy,” Rule said. “I want everybody on this team to stay healthy. We don’t have much depth, so without depth we have to stay healthy. Our role players have to stay healthy as well, because if something happens to somebody in front of them it’s important that they’re ready and know what to do. They will know their role on the team and what to do if their number is called. “We’re like everybody in that we live by ‘Next Man Up.’ We’ve got to be ready. Without a lot of depth we have to stay healthy. We can’t have a drop-off when somebody comes in to play for somebody else. “We just want to see our players become role models and good citizens and learn how to be that through football. We want to score points, stop the offense and get back into the playoffs. We’re hoping for good results and a lot of positivity from our community and the surrounding communities.” Mike Burke is sports editor of the Cumberland Times-News.
