Keyser hopes star players, good depth equals another playoff run Experienced QB Shoemaker will have more duties leading Tornado offense KYLE BENNETT

KEYSER, W.Va. — Just play. It’s a mantra that has been utilized by Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, as well as Mike Sullivan and the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. But if you’ve attended a Keyser High School football game in recent years, or plan on attending one this season, it’s something you’ll likely hear from the black and yellow sideline. “We’ve been using it for years now,” said Golden Tornado head coach Sean Biser. “Whatever we’re doing right now, we’ve just got to focus on it. It’s all about climbing the ladder and improving every week. We have to find ways to get better throughout the season.” One way to have a successful football team is to have a few star players on both sides of the ball, and let them carry the load. Another way is to be deep at every position. What the Keyser Golden Tornado have built up to and have in 2019 is a mix of both. The Golden Tornado lost a lot on paper to graduation — their leading rusher (Brady Clay), leading receiver (Reggie Redman), leading kick and punt returner (Evan Moreland), and their three-year starter at center, who also appeared on the TimesNews All-Area first team last season (Alex Oates) — but they are very much in excellent shape talent-wise for the upcoming season. “I thought we had a very successful year,” Biser said of his team’s 9-3 season in 2018. “The kids worked hard all year and did everything we asked them to do. “We had a couple of hiccups during the regular season. The team matured

in the regular season were single-digit losses to Robert C. Byrd (20-14) and Bridgeport (28-19), with the playoff loss coming at the hands of Bluefield, 35-0. If you take a look at the Golden Tornado’s schedule in 2019, you will see a lot of the same faces — Hampshire, Mountain Ridge, Allegany and, of course, Frankfort — but you’ll also see a lot of differences, most of which Biser thinks can help his team. After two straight years of opening the season with a bye, the Golden Tornado instead open their season on the road, where they play four of their first six games, and start the season Aug. 30 for a shot at redemption against Robert C. Byrd, of Clarksburg. The Golden Tornado then open up

Keyser: Plays at RCB in season opener CONTINUED FROM 6 at home the following week against Berkeley Springs, a team Keyser defeated 47-0 in its season opener a year ago. The Tornado then hit the road to play one of the two new additions to the schedule: Petersburg. “It’s always good to play close to home,” Biser said of adding the Vikings. “Especially with them being a (Class) AA school, we should be playing them anyway.” Keyser’s fourth game is at home against Weir, of Weirton, who the Tornado beat in a 41-40 thriller last season. The Golden Tornado’s final game of the first half of the season is the other new addition: Nicholas County, of Summersville, which went 11-1 last year with the lone loss coming in the Class AA quarterfinals to Weir, 63-43. “We don’t have to look past Week 1,” Biser said of his team’s schedule. “We’ve got our work cut out for us from the start. Week in and week out, we have to be ready to play. We’ve got a long road trip in Nicholas County (175 miles — a three-plus hour bus ride — from Keyser H.S. to Nicholas County H.S.) and Weir has probably the fastest kid in the state. And the back half of the schedule is just as hard with Hampshire, Allegany, Bridgeport, Mountain Ridge and Frankfort.”
We don’t have to look “past Week 1. We’ve got our work cut out for us from the start. Week in and week out, we have to be ready to play. Sean Biser,

Keyser plays its final five games of the regular season in that order — at Hampshire on Oct. 4, at home to Allegany following a bye week, and at Bridgeport before finishing the regular season with back-to-back home games against Mountain Ridge and Frankfort. That’s right — the Mineral Bowl will be played the final week of the regular season. “I’m very excited about it,” Biser said. “Mountain Ridge worked with us since the Maryland schools are playing a nine-game schedule, so I’m really thankful for that because we originally didn’t have a full schedule.” In addition to three of its final four games coming at Alumni and Friends Field at Tornado Alley, Biser thinks moving the bye week back to around

Keyser: Ryan Shoemaker returns as starting QB and the team’s second-leading rusher CONTINUED FROM 11 the midway point of the season will help Keyser this year. “We were really beat up last year in the middle of the season,” he said. “We had to be careful in the way we practiced — not that we practice dangerously or anything like that, but we had to keep a closer eye on kids that were banged up. So, this lets us take a little bit of a breath near the end of the season. “At the same time, the nice thing about a Week 1 bye, we were able to slow down our installs, take our time and make sure we had everything cov-
ered. This season, I’ve been hammering it home with our coaches to make sure we speed things up a little bit.” The Golden Tornado return second-year quarterback Ryan Shoemaker, who replaced Brady Ours after the latter graduated and moved on to Robert Morris University, where he currently plays as a linebacker. Biser had plenty of praise for his senior playcaller after his first year under center. “He’s a coach’s kid, so he’s been around our program since he was a kid,” Biser said. “He’s an all-around athlete in football, basketball and base-
ball. As the year went on, he got better. At the beginning of the season, we asked him to do some things not in his wheelhouse; but once we, as a coaching staff, got ourselves corrected, he was able to really improve. “The thing we SHOEMAKER asked him to do (over the summer) was lift weights and get stronger, as well as be more precise with his reads. I think he did all of that. We didn’t ask him to just focus on football — because he’s playing other sports — but we asked some things of
him. He threw the ball seven on seven a lot better this summer, and he’s gotten faster and quicker as well.” Perhaps Shoemaker’s biggest weakness will be not having Reggie Redman, who graduated after hauling in 27 catches for 435 of the team’s 538 receiving yards and nine of Keyser’s 10 receiving touchdowns. “He’s not a typical body type for a wide receiver in our program,” Biser said of the tall, athletic wideout, “so he enabled us to do some things in the passing game where he was the main read.” Biser and his staff have worked hard

Keyser: Offensive line will be strong with All-Area first teamers Dalton Ray, Don Woodworth CONTINUED FROM 12 to turn the negative into a positive, however. “It made us re-evaluate our passing game a little bit and have multiple reads. A big thing for Reggie was he was such a good run blocker on the perimeter. That was one thing college coaches loved on his film. So, we’ve pressed that on our guys this summer — they need to be able to block on the edge the same way Reggie did.” At wideout in 2019, the Golden Tornado will likely be led by Gavin Root (5-foot-10, 170 pounds, junior). Admittedly, though, Biser says they’ll be somewhat of a wide receiver by committee, with Dameain Emerick (5-10, 152, Jr.) and Brendan Pattison (5-7, 140, Sr.) joining Root in the top tier of the team’s wide receiving corps. “They’re not huge kids,” said Biser, “but they have a good skillset in terms of route running and catching the ball. I think their ability to block on the edge will decide the position.” Rounding out those playing for snaps at wide receiver are Samuel Hamric (5-10, 160, So.), EJ Guy (5-5, 110, So.), Josh Wheeler (6-0, 131, Jr.), Hunter VanPelt (5-7, 140, So.), Kaleb Rice (5-7, 150, Sr.), and Kayden Avona (6-1, 170, Jr.). The Golden Tornado will have two returning standouts on the same side of center, with TimesNews All-Area firstteam offense member Dalton Ray (6-4, 270, Sr.) starting at tackle and All-Area RAY first-team defense Don Woodworth (6-1, 250, Sr.) beside Ray at guard. At center, replacing Oates, will be a timeshare of Adam Kephart (5-10, 210, Sr.) and DJ Cochran (6-0, 240, Sr.), though Kephart is expected to start and Cochran somewhat WOODWORTH of a Swiss Army knife with his ability to play all three spots
along the offensive line. On the other side of center will be freshman Gabe Ryan (6-3, 195), who Biser said has really stepped up and done a nice job this summer and preseason, giving him the edge at the other KEPHART guard spot. Rounding out the offensive line is Shawn See (6-10, 350, Sr.) at offensive tackle. “We have a solid group on the line,” said Biser. “They work pretty well together. We’re seeing how Kephart and DJ run SEE with the center spot, but we’ve got some moving parts. ... Gabe is lean and athletic, but he’s got a little bit of punch for a young kid. He fits the mold in what we’re looking for on offense. Having guys that can play multiple positions on the line will create depth.” The Golden Tornado are deep at offensive line with a plethora of players vying for time throughout the five spots, including seniors Arnold Elifritz (5-8, 170), Brian Liller (5-9, 350) and Billy Metts (6-1, 230), juniors Naylin Cook (5-10, 235), Adrian Davidson (5-10, 195) and Vito Amoruso (6-0, 260), and sophomores Richard Whiting (5-7, 220), Braedon Welch (5-9, 237), Ethan Glass (5-10, 187), Jake Bonner (6-1, 180), Tommy Hardy (5-11, 190), Nicholas Alt (6-0, 252) and Gage Metts (5-10, 168). Notably, Amoruso and Billy Metts have been taking snaps at tackle, while Whiting and Bonner have been getting time at guard. “Really it’s about trying to see if any of them can push anyone that’s starting,” said Biser. Philip Biser (6-2, 230, Sr.) has been working with the first team at tight end, while Jackson Biser (6-2, 210, Sr.) and Seth P. BISER
Quality Vehicles and Service Since 1951
Workman (6-2, 185, Sr.) are seeing time behind him. Christian Alt (6-0, 204, Jr.) and Bradley Sommers (6-1, 155, Jr.) are also vying for time at tight end. Sean Biser is expecting to run a running back by committee system again this season, with Aaron Lyons (5-11, 185, Sr.) and Caden Biser (6-1, 190, Jr.) getting the majority of the snaps with the first team at the moment. In 2018, Lyons had 27 carries for 192 yards and four touchdowns, while Biser was the LYONS team’s third-leading rusher with 109 attempts for 716 yards and nine scores. Logan Proud (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Sam Bradfield (5-10, 165, So.) are getting reps with the next group at running back, as well as Benny Oates (5-10, C. BISER 175, So.). At fullback will be the combination of Drae Allen (5-9, 200, Jr.) and Tristin Fox (5-10, 195, Sr.). Chayse Evans (5-8, 180, So.) has also gotten snaps in with that group as well. Allen was the team’s fourth-leading rusher last year with ALLEN 111 rushes for 764 yards and seven touchdowns. Others trying for playing time in the backfield are Zion Powell (6-0, 170, Jr.), Malachi Blowe (5-7, 145, So.) and Braydon Roderick (5-6, 165, So.). Rounding out the offense is, of course, Shoemaker (5-8, 150, Sr.) under center, with Root as his backup. Shoemaker was 34 of 72 through the air for 537 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions last season. He was also the team’s second-leading rusher with 889 yards on 129 carries to go along with seven touchdowns. Leading the defense in the secondary is Shoemaker, who was a first-teamer on the Times-News All-Area defensive team last season, at free safety. Bradfield will also get reps at that position. ROOT At cornerback will be Root and Proud, along with Emerick and Pattison. Also vying for time in the secondary are Hamric, Guy, Wheeler, VanPelt, Rice, Blowe and Avona. Starters at outside linebacker are Lyons and Caden Biser, with PROUD Oates getting time in
with that group. Powell will probably make the switch to outside linebacker as well due to his amount of speed along with tackling ability, according to Sean Biser. At inside linebacker, Fox and Jackson Biser are expected to be the starters. Philip Biser has been working in there as well as getting some time at defensive end, and Evans has been playing at inside linebacker as well. Also in the group of linebackers are Roderick, Sommers and Gage Metts. On one side of the FOX defensive line, at end, will be Woodworth along with Kephart, while Allen and Philip Biser work the other side. At defensive tackle, Cochran will work with Workman, See, Billy Metts, Ray and J. BISER Amoruso. Also in the defensive lineman group is Christian Alt, Whiting, Cook, Welch, Glass, Bonner, Ryan, Elifritz, Hardy, Liller, Davidson and Nicholas Alt. With the special teams unit, Seth Earnest (5-11, 140, So.) and Proud have been working out at kicker. The punter spot hasn’t been locked down following Redman’s departure, but working there has been Earnest, Caden Biser and Powell. Kick and punt returns will come from a group of Emerick, Pattison, Root, Powell, Lyons and Caden Biser. “When I think of this team, they’re just a straight hard-working, highwork ethic team,” Sean Biser said. “We’ve got 50 kids on the team. We had 48 kids make 18 or more workouts. ... I think their dedication and work ethic all summer long ... that was big for us. In the spring, many of them were coming to school and lifting before class. They hold themselves accountable and expect each other to be there. “They’re a very tight group as well. I think a lot of that is because they’ve been together for so long. A lot of the older kids have taken a leadership role and have been mentoring the younger kids.” EARNEST The Golden Tornado’s biggest unanswered question thus far? “Trying to find the exact depth at each position,” said Biser. “But we’re in the second week of practice and some kids are really starting to separate themselves.” Follow Staff Writer Kyle Bennett on Twitter @KyleBennettCTN.
