8 NORTHERN HUSKIES, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2019
Head coach Phil Carr Season: 23rd Phil Carr’s name has become synonymous with Northern High School athletics. His involvement in the athletic department — as a player, football and baseball coach and athletic director — spans nearly 30 years. A 1984 graduate, Carr was a junior guard and outside linebacker on the first Huskies team to win a region championship in football. That year, 1982, the Huskies were 9-1 during the regular season before falling to Mount Hebron 14-0 in the state semifinals. Also a graduate of Garrett College and Frostburg State University, Carr played baseball at both schools and earned a master’s degree in special education form West Virginia University. Northern has a 113-107 record in Carr’s 22 seasons as the head football coach. His 1999 team became the first, and remains the only, team in school history to have a 10-0 regular season. The only other team to go unbeaten during the regular season was the 1964 team that finished 9-0. Maryland State Sen. George Edwards was the quarterback of that team.
Carr began his football coaching career as the junior varsity head coach (1988-1991) and also served as a varsity assistant coach (1988-1996). In his final year as an assistant coach, Carr was the offensive coordinator under head coach Tom Vent.

Defensive back Hunter Dale pursues a Frankfort Falcon during their 14-6 loss last season.
Northern: Defensive line should be stout CONTINUED FROM 11 Fuller (5-9, 165 Sr.) at end. The line is one of the strong points of the defense, too. “I think our D-line is going to be pretty tough,” said Carr. “We lost two linebackers in Peyton (Carr) and Sam (Beeman). I think our linebackers are going to be a little new to the game, except for Hunter Dale. We’re moving Hunter Meyers, a defensive end last year, to linebacker. I think we can get the defensive line to cover for the linebackers until they get a little time under their belts.” Meyers was an honorable mention All-Area defensive end last year. The probable starters are Casteel and Emory at tackle and Glotfelty and Eggleston at end, and either Ritchey or Cole Moore at nose guard. Meyers will be the middle linebacker, flanked by Dale and Bittinger. Paul and Rush are the likely cor- MEYERS ners with Warnick or Montgomery at safety. Emory, Casteel, Glotfelty, Eggleston, Rush, Paul, Dale and Meyers give the Huskies eight returning starters on defense. Glotfelty is the top returning tackler, having made 64 tackles (21 WARNICK solo). He led the team in tackles for loss (10.5) and sacks (9). Emory was next with 59 tackles 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Dale was fourth with 57 tackles. Meyers had 47 tackles, 4.5 for loss and two sacks, and Rush 45 tackles, an interception, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
I think our linebackers “ are going to be a little new to the game, except for Hunter Dale. We’re moving Hunter Meyers, a defensive end last year, to linebacker. I think we can get the defensive line to cover for the linebackers until they get a little time under their belts.

Northern head coach
Paul added 31 tackles and two interceptions. Also in the mix are Frantz and Stanczyk on the line, Reams at nose, Broadwater at end, David Edwards (5-8, 155 Jr.) at linebacker and Harman at corner. Paul and Bittinger are competing for the punting duties, and Paul and Moore will do some of the kicking, Carr said. Warnick and Rush will lead the kick returners. “We definitely want to improve on last season,” said Carr. “You always want to improve when you don’t have a winning season. With the expanded playoffs, we want to be one of those teams to move on and have a 10th game.” Last year, the Huskies opened the season with three consecutive home games. This year, it’s the opposite. They make their season debut Sept. 6 at Brunswick, and after games against Tucker County and Clear Spring, the Huskies make their home debut against Frankfort on Sept. 27.
