This season brings Coach Jimmy Shaver closer to a total of 40 years coaching, if he hasn’t hit the mark already. The head man for the Barbe High School Buccaneers said “I am going to coach ‘til I don’t like it anymore,” and added “I don’t think there will ever be a time when I don’t like football. I love football.” Shaver is very optimistic about this fall and feels very good about the Bucs chances

going into the season, as well he should. The Buccaneers have only two returning players on offense and two defensively, but according to Shaver they have really good skilled people. Two of them are the two returning offensively, Ernest Celestie and Eric Cutrera. Both of these players are All-District standouts from last year. Cutrera was and will be returning in the quarterback position. Celestie will again be in the backfield as one of the state’s premier running backs. Noteworthy is the fact that Celestie has committed to Texas Tech.

Offensively, Barbe will still run the spread. Shaver stated, “What we are working hard on is the offensive line and developing a good passing attack. With Eric’s throwing ability, if we can do that and turn Ernest loose running the ball then we will be in good shape.” Look for the Bucs to use some special skilled people offensively. One issue that the team will have to deal with is depth. While they have some very good skilled people, the Bucs are a little thin in areas. Defensively, the Bucs should look good with Cade Daughenbaugh and Eric Papion

returning. They are the only two starters coming back. However, the Bucs have All-State transfer Janzen Jackson who will be in the defensive secondary. Jackson is a true bluechipper who has committed to LSU and is also listed in Rivals top 100, (a Web-based nationwide listing of the top college prospects around the country). Shaver said, “I think the secondary is really good. Having secondary guys helping to make plays and preventing big third down plays is a key.” Shaver went on to say that he feels it gives you a much better chance to win when this happens.

Junior Logan Chapman got quite a bit of play time last year and will be alongside Daughenbaugh in the linebacker position. The Bucs will show a “nickel” defense quite a bit this season and will present an eight man front when needed. The level of talent in the secondary gives the team many options. When asked what the key to winning district would be Shaver said, “We have to win the close games and finish the job.” Shaver stated, “ I can’t wait until about the sixth game when everybody knows what to do. I like the competition and watching an athlete do something good with what you have taught

ting the ball in the air a little bit more.” The offense is not set at this point and according to Bourgeois, every position is open except for three or four. The front four of the defense has suffered some setbacks with injuries and other problems. Those things have made it difficult for Sulphur to find players with playtime and maturity to put up front. The inexperience will make things tough early, leaving Sulphur with a big task to get up to speed before district play. Bourgeois was upbeat about the team as a whole. “I like this group a lot, they have done every-

thing we have asked of them at this point. They have a great attitude and that's half the battle,” he said. One of the key games for Sulphur will be the Westgate game in week five. Westgate knocked Sulphur out of the playoffs in the first round last year. They will host Westgate for their homecoming game. Bourgeois says this is a good game in the middle to help get his team ready for the last half of the season. He feels that if the team can come out of the first half of the year in the win column, get some things going their way and have a little luck, they will be competitive in district.

Coach Eric Parmley will kick off his third year at the helm of the DeRidder High School Dragon football team. The head man for the Dragons came into his first year two weeks before that first season, a winless season that ended with an 0-10 mark. Last year saw marked improvement as the Dragons ended up 4-6 for the year, with the team showing great potential for the future. “The team played well last season but had some stumbling blocks mentally,” Parmley said. “Things take a while to work out under a new sys-

tem.” Parmley added that he doesn’t expect that to happen this season with a team that is more focused. The Dragons will be running the “I” offense this season and have one returning in the backfield at fullback. There are only three starters returning on DeRidder's offense. In the backfield will also be junior running back Steven Richmond. The tailback has 4.6-4.7 speed and coach said “What he lacks in size, he makes up for with his running.” He added “He runs bigger than he is.” Sam Peterson will lead the 2008 squad at

quarterback. At over 6’ tall and with pretty good speed, Peterson should contribute on the ground as well as the air this season. Look for the Dragons to be a little “old school and run the football,” according to Parmley. The major strength for the Dragons will be their defense. The team will be running a four-two-five anchored by two-year starter Ronald Acker. Acker has 4.5 speed and experience, something that should not be taken lightly by opposing teams. “Our team has six returning on defense and we are fortunate the other players filling the gaps all

have play time from last year,” Parmley said. “Defense, solid defense, is my goal and has been since I came to DeRidder,” Parmley said. “We have a good bit of speed and will use that speed to implement gang tackling.” The one monkey on the team's back is the twelve consecutive losses to Leesville. Even though Leesville is not in DeRidder's District now, they were at one time. This has been a long running rivalry and the winner takes home the Hooper Trophy. This trophy was donated years ago to promote play between these two schools. It's been a source of pride to bring the trophy home for generations of Dragons. The fact that

Leesville has two of the states premier running backs may still make winning the trophy for DeRidder difficult. Look for the loss of the Hooper to to change as Parmley continues to assert his will on the team. Parmley concluded, “I’m excited about the up and coming season and feel that the key to winning district is to stay healthy.” With team speed, a solid running game, a commitment to defense and good health, the Dragons should indeed look to be a top contender in District four-four A. The team’s chemistry is coming together. They should be contenders this coming season—making things interesting in a district

LaGrange High School welcomes a new Gator to town this fall. Coach Jules Sullen comes from Peabody High School and takes over the football program at LaGrange. Sullen says he will have his team more disciplined, fundamentally sound and bigger, faster, and stronger. “The team participated in the seven on seven competitions this summer and did well,” Sullen said. Seven on seven is competition for football skill

positions, quarterbacks, receivers, running backs and defensive secondary personnel. One team’s skill players take on another team’s skill players. These competitions are held in various locations around the state during summer months. “Offensively, we are looking at what type of personnel we have and that will determine the exact type of offense we are going to run,” Sullen said. He has a lot of skilled players this year and he feels they will be better than some think. According to Sullen, LaGrange will run a multiple offense and will have quite a few

different looks. With good people in skilled positions, look for the Gators to have a more wide open offense. "I'm not sure what the ratio will be in run versus pass at this point. We'll just take whatever is given," he said. The defense will be the 4-2-5, and the team will field some of their greatest talents on that side of the ball. Sullen said, “We are trying to put our strength in our defense and special teams.” He has taken some of his starters from offense and put them starting defensively. Some of the skill players Sullen mentions

He is 6’3”, has 4.6 speed and according to Sullen, he’s been catching the ball well. “He will have a lot of stats this year because he runs routes extremely well,” Sullen said. Junior Brandon Williams will be in the secondary at the weak side safety. “He will do extremely well for us,” Sullen said. Senior Parish Roberts is a three-year starter and will be back at the free safety spot for the Gators. Anchoring the defense on the line at end is sen-

ior and two-year starter Kaylon Roberts. Sullen said, “When people see us they will be extremely impressed with what we do.” LaGrange will be tested early. The Gators have a tough schedule and will play Barbe for their opener at the Bucs. Sullen says it will give them a chance to see where they are. He is hoping that his team can stay healthy and get through the pre-district schedule okay. If they do that and are able to “gel” as a team by then, Sullen believes they will be competing for the district title.

The Sam Houston Broncos will be back this season to mix it up in district 4-4A, and Coach Russ Sutherland has some top talent in the district to help. Sutherland has two linemen returning that should help the Broncos cause. Zach Morgan will be at the right

tackle spot this season which is a slight change from last year where he played at right guard. The position change will not be a problem according to Sutherland, who said he is capable of playing all of them. Zach was honorable mention AllState and first team All-District last season and has committed to Tulane. Returning Senior Marshall Paris was second team All-District last season and he will be in the

middle of the line snapping the ball. Both of the linemen have size with Marshall at 6’3”, 260 lbs., and Zach also 6’3” weighing in at 290 lbs. Sutherland likes both players and thinks they'll have a great season. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Marshall,” stated Sutherland. “He’s a hard worker, he’s tough, and he’s dependable. And Morgan finishes blocks.” He believes Morgan to be one of the

best, if not the best lineman, in Southwest Louisiana. The offense will have Skylar Barrentine at wide receiver. The starting senior hauled in 40 catches last season for 544 yards and four touchdowns. He was first team All-District as a wide receiver and second team All-District as a kick return man. The backfield will include Junior Kip Carter returning as a starter. Carter was also second team AllDistrict in '07 at the running back position. He will pull double duty for the Broncos starting at cornerback and doing the placekicking as well. The defense only has two returning starters from last season, with several underclassman filling vacant spots. Besides Carter, the only returning defensive player is Dennis Mayfield. He is a three-year starter that went down with a torn ACL in week eight of last season. He will be back at full speed and should help in the middle of the field from his linebacker position. The Broncos will have Orlan Lockhart as their signal caller on the field and the 6’2”, 195lbs. junior does have an arm. Look for the Broncos to be able to throw

the ball again this year. One pitfall for Sutherland early is the absence of Evan Powell to start the season. Powell is 5’9” and 185lbs. and in his sophomore year. He will be starting for the Broncos at linebacker, but will miss the jamboree and the first two games of the season. Powell will be with the Junior National Olympic Baseball team at the Pan Am Games. Sutherland said, “I think it’s just a great honor for him; it’s just great for him to be selected for this.” Sutherland boasted that Evan is a solid player and an unbelievable talent. The Broncos will play some top talent early, positioning themselves to post “W’s” on the board. Something Sutherland would like to see. The first five games for the team puts them against St. Louis, Leesville, Westlake, Barbe and the Jennings Bulldogs. From the beginning, their task will not be an easy one. However, if Sam Houston can make it through with relative good health, they should be competing at the end of the season.

District 4-4A

The Charging Indians of Washington Marion will enter this fall looking to take their share of district 4-4A. They have several starters coming back this season; eight defensively and five on offense. This season head coach John Jenkins will graduate the first group of athletes who have been with him since he started in the fall of 2004. One point of mention is Jenkins’ pride in the number of his athletes that have become academically eligible to step up and play in college. “I have constantly stressed the

importance of academics since I signed on at Washington-Marion, and the players have really responded," he said. "I am very proud of them.” Jenkins is excited about this season and he has some talent to be excited about. Haile Moses is 6’1” and 180 lbs., has 4.6 speed and will be quarterbacking the Indians. Moses was at wide receiver last year and Jenkins is confident that he will be playing at the next level. The Indians will use Moses as the signal caller to take advantage of his athleticism. The offensive line will have 6’2”, 310 lbs.

Michael Weston returning. The standout lineman has letters of recruitment from LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee. Look for him to be making holes for the backfield this fall. On the other side of the ball defensively, Jenkins has some solid players returning. At the linebacker positions, he has Clark Hays and Malcolm Patterson. Both seniors have good speed, like to hit, and will come after you. Jenkins is looking for running backs and may use both of these players in the backfield from time to time this season. He believes that these two players will be getting offers from the collegiate ranks as well.

Defense for the Indians is the 4-3 and they will also run the 3-3 stack. “I like the 3-3 because it allows us to blitz from a lot of different positions on the field,” said the head coach. In the secondary returning at free safety is senior All-District player Darrius Landry. Senior Kevin Chretien returns as starter again and will be in the secondary at strong safety. Jenkins has the entire secondary back from last year and is confident about his defense. The team overall has good speed. The offensive and defensive lines are in good shape. They have good receivers on the offense and feel they can make plays.

There is one area that the Indians have not quite nailed down. Jenkins said. “The question mark for us this year is the running back spot.” If someone steps up and answers that question the Indians could make things tough for opponents. Jenkins said, “The key to winning district is to stop the Wing T with Eunice.” Eunice was the district champion last year and stopping the Wing T wasn’t an easy task for anyone. Don’t look for it to be any easier this year. “The goal for our team this season is to win district and get past the first round of the playoffs,” said Jenkins. The only problem may be the other four programs trying to do the same thing.

I value the family life

we enjoy in our community today. However, it is being assaulted on so many fronts, and statistics show it is continuing to get worse. What's the solution? We elect an aggressive and experienced lawyer with courtroom experience as our next District Attorney -- a man who will confront criminals and protect our families and our way of life. In fact, it is the only way we are going to be able to handle the growing criminal activity that faces our community and families today. I pledge to the people of Calcasieu Parish that I will use my 30 years of trial experience to do just that -- protect our families by personally prosecuting violent criminals, sex offenders, and drug dealers -- the very element that threatens all of us. The deals for criminals will stop- I guarantee it! I’m Steve Streete, candidate for Calcasieu Parish District Attorney, and I ask for your vote and support on October 4th.

SPORTS Health

The Young Athlete’s Diet:

You Are What You Eat If you’re an athlete, it stands to reason that you need to take better care of yourself than the average person. You’re giving your body a lot more physical stress than most of us. Exercise, team practice and the right amount of sleep will keep your body in tip-top shape, but remember, what you eat can make or break you. Young athletes who learn to eat correctly now are setting the stage for their future—on and off the field. If you don’t eat right, you’re looking for trouble. A lot of fats and sugars will slow down your performance and create health problems down the line. The best way to get the right amounts of vitamins and minerals in your system is to eat a balanced diet of three meals a day. By balanced, that means low on sugar and fat content, and high in iron, calcium and protein. Lean red meats (meats with not much fat on them) are a good iron source, along with leafy, green vegetables. But, you don’t need to cut out fat altogether. Everyone needs a certain amount, especially athletes. Active muscles burn through carbs quickly, so you will need some fat to increase your energy. Unsaturated fat, found in most vegetable oils, is considered a “good” fat. And there are healthy fats out there: Raw nuts, avocados, olives, etc., are good snacks and will give you the fat

you need without the side effects of the bad stuff. You also need to choose when to eat fats. Fatty foods can slow digestion, so it’s best to avoid them for a few hours before and after exercising Get your calcium – to keep your bones strong and protect against stress fractures—from yogurt, cheese and low-fat milk. In addition to calcium and iron, you need other vitamins and minerals. So it’s essential to eat lots of different fruits and vegetables with your meals, which should provide what you need. Carbohydrates (breads, grains and fruit) are very important for an athlete. Your body turns the carbs into glucose, which is utilized by your muscles when you perform on the playing field. Contrary to the hype, you don’t need an enormous amount of protein to build big muscles. Muscle growth comes from regular training and hard work — not from pills and supplements. Taking in too much can harm the body, causing calcium loss, dehydration, and even kidney problems. The right amount enhances muscle recovery after exercise, provides amino acids (which are essential building blocks in the body), and boosts the immune system. It’s generally recommended that you consume one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. For example, if you’re a 170-pound male, you should be consuming about 170 grams of protein. Most young athletes get plenty of protein just by healthy eating. Regarding dehydration, don’t bother with salt tablets. Excessive salt can actually lead to dehydration and cause nausea and vomiting, as well as damage to the stomach lining. Any salt you lose due to excessive sweating can generally be replaced by one normal meal after exercise. Stick to drinking fluids. And don’t just drink when you feel thirsty—this is a sign that your body has needed liquids for a while. Experts suggest that athletes should drink 1-2 cups of water before exercise and a half to one cup every 15-20 minutes during exercise. Don’t eat too much or too little on game day, or before a workout. Have your main meal two to four hours before (preferably, a serving of fruit or vegetables with a protein and carbohydrate main course) and then have a light snack less than two hours before the game begins. Eating too close to game time will make you feel full and bloated, not to mention that digestion takes up energy that should be put towards winning the game. Everyone’s system is different, and through trial and error, you’ll find an eating plan that will work for you.

District 4-3A

The Yellowjackets of Iowa High School will field a very young team this season, with nine seniors donning the Jacket purple and gold. Even so, head coach David Miller has a positive outlook for the year. “We have a very young team. Yes, we have a lot of work to do, but the kids have a good attitude about it and if we keep working, we will have a chance for some success.” This

will be Miller’s fourth year at the helm. The team will only have seven starters returning, five on the offense and two defensively. Miller said that the Jackets will go with the spread for their offense this. “It has been good for us,” he said. Defensively they run the four-three and with only two returning starters, there will be much learning to do. Players returning offensively with experience are Mike LeBlanc at running back, along with

teammates Jonathan Davis, Marcus Ceasar, and David Morrow at receiver. These players all had quite a bit of playing time last year. Logan Chapman will be taking the snaps for the Yellowjackets. He was the starting quarterback for the last half of the 2007 season, so this role is not unfamiliar to him. According to Miller, the team will have to depend on each other to move the ball down the field and make some points.

“I don’t think right now we have any ‘standout’ strengths football-wise,” Miller stated. “Really, I think this year it’s more about the mental and knowledge part of the game. We’ve done some good work in that area. I think the kids have caught on to playing like a family.” Miller does not feel like his team will be as strong physically or athletically as the other teams. He feels all his players are on a pretty even playing field this season. “It’s a different type of team this year and that’s fine, we have made some adjustments,” he said. He went on to say that this season is about being patient with the young kids and allowing them the chance to develop. “We are going to focus more on seeing how close we can be as a team,” Miller said. “We realize not everything is going to be perfect, but win lose or draw, we are going to stay together. You have to put yourself in position as best you can to get as many wins as you can. You cannot let the highs get

you too high and the lows get you too low, you have to keep focusing on your long term goals. We are trying to do the little things better than everybody else and that will help us a lot on the way to winning.” Miller stated that it’s important to understand that when you talk about rebuilding, it's not so much about future years, but just the fact they have a lot of holes to fill right now in this years season. “It’s not that we don’t think we can get it turned to the point where by the time we get to the playoffs we can make our run,” he said. The Yellowjackets are in a tough district, especially with state runner-up Westlake Rams in the mix. Making it equally tough for the Jackets is the fact that so many new kids will be filling uniforms this season. However, given the stable of talent the Jackets enjoy year in and year out, look for the team to be competitive, looking to improve on their 6-3 mark of 2007.

The Bulldogs of Jennings graduated 27 seniors from their football program and will be filling a lot of positions both offensively and defensively this year. There were 17 starters lost from last season “Most of the guys we lost were

two-year starters on defense last year, and the loss of the Southwest Louisiana player of the year Keegan Myers, leaves a big hole to fill at linebacker.,” said Rusty Phelps, head coach for the Jennings High School football team. The offensive backfield will be returning for the Dogs, as well as two in the offensive line. Phelps says he will put emphasis on defense early and continue to improve on

offense. "I think we have six or seven sophomores that are really going to be good in time,” he said. “As the season goes along and they (as a team) get better, I feel like we are going to be in pretty good shape.” Jennings will run the Wing “T” offensively. According to Phelps it will allow more flexibility and adapt to the type of talent they have. The Bulldogs have been running this

offense since 1997 and Phelps says that is not going to change. Defensively Jennings has three-year starter Jake Trahan playing at one of the tackles. The Bulldogs will run the 4-2-5 defense and will rely heavily on Trahan in the line. Trahan is 6’ tall, 275 lbs. and has good speed. Jake also is a prospect for the next level and has schools such as McNeese, ULM, and Northwestern looking to recruit him. “We need to control the ball on offense,” Phelps said. “And we do not need to get in any track meets.” He talked about most of his players on defense being young. He wants his offense to maintain control of the ball when they are on the field.

One of the strengths for the Dogs should be special teams, with experience being a definite plus this coming year. Colby Rinquet will be the signal caller for the second year in a row. “Another one of the teams strengths will be the ability to pass the ball this season,” Phelps said. He feels Rinquet will be able to throw the ball more this year. It is one of the things the team worked real hard on in the spring. “I think we have kids on the outside now, and if we get the ball in their hands, we'll do something,” he said. Winning district will not be easy and the team will need to “control the ball, mature quickly defensively, and be real solid on special teams,” according to Phelps.

The Rams of Westlake High School went all the way to the dome last year, falling a single point shy of winning it all. This season looks good for them as well, even though the team suffered some casualties from graduation, they should be strong again. Max Caldarera has been at the helm for the Rams for 30 years and has a winning record of 183-147. He has taken the Rams to the play-

offs 19 times, but last season's second place in the state was the Rams best ever finish. The overall record was 14-1 and you can bet with the group he has returning, that feeling they had from last year’s run is still fresh. Caldarera said, “I’m very excited about this team. They have a great work ethic and love to play the game.” He spoke candidly about the team practices and said that sometimes “they have to put the brakes on this bunch.” The Rams have senior guard Ryan Davis returning. Davis was second team All-District last year, and was a big part of making holes

for offensive MVP running back Vincent Collins. He gained 2,315 on 370 carries and 25 touchdowns. The senior had a better than six yard per carry average. The offense has seven starters returning. All will be seniors with only one underclassman on the offense. Taking the snaps at quarterback this fall will be returning starter Trent Whitley. Trent is a senior and last season threw for 1,318 on 75 completions. He completed 10 for touchdowns and only three interceptions. The defense will be similar in that it has

one underclass athlete starting and is returning all starters from last fall except one. Coach Max spoke about his defense. He said, “We have got some good players over there.” That could be an understatement as the Rams have some serious talent on their defense. The players coming back were part of a defense that posted seven shutouts last season. Out of this group Westlake has All-State 6’1”, 240 lbs., right tackle Scotty Foy. Joining him will be All-District lineman Malcolm Guillory at nose guard who measures 6’ tall and weighs in at 248 lbs. Finishing the defensive front is Jason Slaydon, the left tackle, who is 6’ tall 230 lbs., and also an All-District player. Returning to the secondary for the Westlake defense is inside linebacker T.J. Juranka. At 5’10” and 175 lbs., this returning senior was the leading

tackler for the Rams. He managed 90 solo tackles and 62 assists in last season’s 13 game run. At cornerback is 5’9”, 150 lbs., senior Donovan McZeal. He led the team with eight interceptions and was All-Southwest player at the cornerback position. The other inside linebacker is A.J. Moss, a 5’11”, 200 lbs. senior from last year that also made the All-District squad. “The key to winning for us is that the team needs to take care of the little things, and work one week at a time towards district,” Caldarera said. “Our strength has got to be this senior class coming up with all the starters. Can we do what we did last year? You know as well as I you need some luck. That said, we will be a good football team.”

Video Game Company Electronic Arts (EA) to Open North American Test Center at LSU Governor Bobby Jindal and video game company Electronic Arts (EA) Inc., recently announced a partnership between EA and Louisiana State University (LSU) that will lead to the creation of a new global quality assurance center in Baton Rouge. The facility will be the first of its kind in the United States and will serve primarily as a test center for EA Sports’ software titles. Governor Jindal said that putting the first-of-its-kind U.S. video game testing center in Baton Rouge is a “terrific win” for the future of the state. “We know our economic development initiatives have to be aggressive, but they must also be innovative, and EA has both of these important attributes,” he said. “This testing center will create 20 full time jobs, and more than 200 part-time jobs for LSU students and others who will get paid to test video games. I know this

will be a dream job for some kids, but it is also a key part of strengthening our state’s economic development so we become the best place in the world to do business and all of our children can stay right here at home to pursue their dreams.” Jindal added, “This job win is a critical step in creating a digital media economy that will generate even more high-paying high tech jobs and help us compete for even more jobs within EA in the future.” Jindal worked to personally cultivate a relationship with EA since taking office, and his state budget for FY 2009 includes funding for two new positions focused specifically on cultivating the digital media industry in Louisiana, to work with companies like EA. The quality assurance (QA) center, created through the EA/LSU partnership, will be a testing facility for

new software designed by EA’s development studios. The center will ramp up to approximately 20 fulltime employees as well as more than 200 part-time testers made up predominately of LSU students. Payroll for the operation is expected to increase to approximately $5.7 million per year within two years. The QA facility will initially be located at LSU’s South Campus as part of the Louisiana Business and Technology Center. The partnership will include the use of Louisiana’s Digital Media Tax Credit Program, as well as assistance from LED and EBR City-Parish for facility improvements.

Robert Jackson is in his second year leading the Trojans of East Beauregard. Last year was a tough first year for Jackson and the Trojans were winless at 0-10. Starting a new job is difficult, but in all fairness, four out of the first five games played had teams ranked in the top five in the state last season. That kind of schedule is just brutal, first year or not. This year Jackson looks to improve. “Last year was tough and we learned a lot,” Jackson said. “The

kids just amazed me by sticking together, they just fought through every game, it didn’t matter whether we were behind by six or 36, they just kept battling.” This season brings experience and a little more talent to the Trojans, according to Jackson. The team will have eight or nine seniors this year as opposed to three or four last season. This past spring, the Trojans did well and the staff noticed much improvement from the fall. “The experience helped out a lot,” Jackson said.

He also implemented a new offense in the spring. East Beau will be running the split back veer. Jackson felt like it “simplified things and gave them a lot more confidence.” That change, coupled with the majority of the offense returning should give the Trojans a better opportunity to win. One of the offensive linemen who will be paving the way for the backs is Matt Martin. Martin is a 6’1”, 280 lbs. right tackle. Jackson commented, “He has good speed and is a very hard worker.” Martin plays on the defensive

line as well. Jackson spoke highly of Matt and looks for him to help lead the Trojans this fall. John Schlagg will be running the veer for East Beauregard. “The senior did a good job of making reads and picking up on the veer quickly,” Jackson said. Cory Townsley was the signal caller last year but was moved to the running back position in the spring to “take advantage of his speed and toughness running the ball,” the coach said. Jackson Mahaffey played guard last season and he also was moved to the running back position this spring. Coach Jackson said that he made the move because Mahaffey is one of his fastest players. Jacob Cooley was a running back last year and will be running the ball quite a bit this year as well

according to Jackson. The defense that East Beauregard runs is a 5-3 and Jackson said it will “have a few new positions.” He added, “We moved and switched some people around.” In the spring they tried to have players only going one way and this fall will try and continue doing that. It will be difficult as the Trojans only had 42 players this past spring. Jackson said for them to have a chance in district, they will have to really improve on defense and control the ball on offense. The Trojans have made changes on both sides of the ball and the outlook is good. Look for them to surprise a few people this fall.

Coach James Marcantel and the Pickering High School Red Devils ended last season with a 1-9 record. Last year marked the first time Pickering did not make the playoffs in the last six years. Marcantel has been coaching for 30 years, the last eight being at Pickering High. “We’re just going to try our best to improve” Marcantel said. Helping them do

that is the fact that the Red Devils lost only three seniors from last year. This team brings back six seniors for the ‘08 season. “We will be relying heavily on them,” Marcantel said. “I feel they should be a year stronger and wiser and hope that will translate into a better won-lost record.” The split back veer is what Pickering runs offensively. Currently, three athletes are competing for an open quarterback slot. Marcantel stated, “We may alternate them unless one is head and shoulders above the others. Until then, we are going to keep rolling them around

until we find one that fits better in the niche.” Right now, no one has separated themselves from the others, but at this point, Brendan Smith may possibly get the nod. The senior stands 5’10”, 160 lbs. Smith was a receiver and defensively was in the secondary for Pickering last season, so he is able to draw from that time on the field. The Red Devils have two seniors in the backfield. Cartez Shanklin is 5’10” and 185 lbs., and next to him is Paul Marcantel. Marcantel is small at 5’9” and 165 lbs., but has four-six speed and runs tough. He will also

start at the middle linebacker position defensively. The offensive line is young and small with only one athlete over 200 pounds, so just pushing people around is unlikely. They will need to be quick and have to finesse people this year. Pickering will have one player in both the offensive and defensive line that had play time last fall in Senior Zack Dunn. He will be starting offensively at the left guard, and at left defensive end this year. Defensively, they will run the four-three. The Red Devils will have the good fortune of having their linebackers returning from last year. Marcantel is looking to have another senior that has been sidelined by injuries for the last two seasons. Josh Savoy will be at the wide receiver on offense and defensively, he will be in the secondary.

“What strengths the team does have will be found in the experience of his players that are coming back,” said Coach Marcantel. “That, coupled with his linebackers on defense and his running backs on offense.” On the downside, Pickering has only 24 players. For any school that is a difficult thing to overcome, especially in 2-A district program. Regardless, the athletes that the Red Devils put on the field will be ready to play. It takes a special kind of dedication to go out and compete and look for this team to fight all season long. The 4-2A district has some class and talent. When asked about the run at district, Marcantel said, “If they give us a chance, we are going to take it from them.”

Head coach Johnny Cryer took the Rosepine High School Eagles to the playoffs last year. The leader for the Eagles had a six and five season. That was better than 1-9 the year before. The Eagles have a lot of people coming back to the team this year. “Our season really depends on our team staying healthy and doing what we do best,” said Cryer. “I feel like we will be competitive and win some games.” They will have 10 seniors on the team.

The Eagles started six freshmen last fall and has a large sophomore class to work with. "I feel like with the group of kids we have, we will be competitive for the next couple of years," Cryer said. He says this season the offense will throw the ball more and be less predictable. Cryer was confident about his defense. “Defensively, we had five shutouts last year and we look to have shutouts again this year, because we’ve got just about all of our kids back,” he said. “The kids are dedicated, love to work and are anxious to get started.” Rosepine will run the multiple “I” offense. They will mix in different formations, incorporate the

spread and run plays from the shotgun with four wide and sometimes five wide to create seams in the defenses, according to Cryer. “People are going to have to prepare a little bit more for us,” he said. Quarterback for the team will be sophomore Clint White. Clint started last year as a freshman. In fact, the entire offensive backfield had starting freshmen. According to Cryer, White is one of the best athletes on the field and is a very accurate passer. He checks in at 5’9” and 185 lbs. Good things are expected from him this season. Sophomore Gary Suydam will be returning to the backfield for the Eagles this fall. Suydam suffered an

injury in the first district game in '07 that put him out for the rest of the season. “He probably had the best spring of anyone on the team.” Cryer said of the running back. “He is one of the strongest kids on the team and runs around a four-seven, has some breakaway speed if he can get in the open. He's just a very hard runner.” The entire Eagles offensive line will return from last season, challenging defenses to keep them off the field. They are large, averaging 6’2” and 262 lbs. across the front. Senior All-State right tackle William Burks is 6’5” and weighs in at an impressive 315 lbs. Next to him is senior three-year starter Donovan Miller. Miller is no slouch either at 6’3”, 295 lbs. The duo will be an imposing force for every defence they face, and clearing lanes for the backfield will not be a hard task. Defensively, the Eagles will operate the four-three, but may vary off of it from time to time. Anchoring the ends

for the defense will be two All-District players. On the strong side is senior George Bailey; on the weak side will be sophomore Travis Moses. When asked what the key to winning district would be, Cryer said, “We need to win early.” He also talked about Gueydan and Hamilton Christian being important games leading them into district play. The quality of the two programs cannot be overlooked. Look for the Eagles to control the O-line with their size. The team has some depth, so if they do suffer injuries, they feel very comfortable with the players in the backup role. As the season progresses, they should just get better. One fact worth mentioning is that the Eagles have never won a playoff game or held a playoff game at home. This 2008 team is planning to take the next step and change history.

The Knights of South Beauregard have a new head man. Coach Shawn Demeritt will take over the top spot this season and tells us his outlook for the 2008 season. Demeritt has been the offensive coordinator for the Knights the last two seasons, and with the departure of Carl Flanagan to the Elton Indians, was hired as head coach. In assessing his team, Demeritt commented, “We have 14 starters back for this season. Eight are on

defense, making our “D” our strong point going into this season. We lost our tailback and our quarterback who were both All-District players.” Coach Demeritt feels that they will be further along defensively early while they find the right players to fill the gaps left from last year offensively. The offense for the Knights has their fullback returning, Dylan Fowler. Fowler started as a freshman and is a very strong player, bench pressing 375 lbs. Dylan gained over 400 yards last season and averaged five plus yards per carry. Pretty impressive when you realize he didn’t start until

the fourth game of the season. The team has two players competing for the quarterback position. The first is Rickey Ivey, who started at safety last year as a sophomore. The second is Jordan Johnson, who started several games last year at corner for the Knights and is one of five freshmen that started for the team last year. The two are splitting time right now in practice. Both young men played quarterback on the Junior Varsity team last year. “It’s a tough battle and they are really doing a good job competing,” Demeritt said.

Demeritt is comfortable with both athletes and is looking for the one that steps up their level of play and does not turn the ball over. “That will put us in the best position to win,” he said. The chances of both athletes taking snaps during the year are very good. “I have done it before. They can both play quarterback, or one can play receiver and the other can play quarterback.” South Beau is going to throw the ball more than they did last year. Demeritt is quite confident with his receiving corps this year. The team will be more multiple on offense and he feels by the time district play comes around, they should be much better offensively. The coach says that they will have more players getting the ball, unlike last year, when it was no secret who the team relied on. Look for the Knights to be in more three receiver sets offensively, making it more difficult for opposing teams to plan for them. Defensively, the Knights will be in a four-three. “We are staying with that base front, but we have changed up a lot of our coverages and the way we attack” said Demeritt, adding, “nothing drastic, I just feel it fits the kids that we have. You have to change to

(fit) your personnel.” The Knights secondary is young. But given the depth in that area, they will be able to rotate players without problems, keeping legs fresh for better coverage. Joey Nixon returns at the weak-side linebacker position defensively. He was district MVP last year and first team All-State at his position. Nixon also plays running back at times for the Knights. When you look at South Beauregard’s strengths, you have to consider six out of seven returning in the defensive front a positive. It's a real plus in that it gives the defense experience. The other strength Demeritt feels good about is his offensive line. Senior Jake Barrow is second team all district at center, and the Knights have two tackles that started last year as freshmen coming back. Demeritt feels confident with his offensive and defensive lines. An important game early for South Beau will be Iota. The coach feels this game can help his team as they go down the stretch into their season. The key to winning district for the Knights? “We have got to play good defense, no doubt about it,” Demeritt said. “This will create short fields for our offense, especially early

Brad Kellogg is moving into his second year as head coach for the DeQuincy High Tigers. Kellogg's philosophy is to first concentrate on themselves. “I don’t worry about anybody else; we have to get better doing what we do,” he said. Kellogg has nine returning starters on defense and eight returning offensively. He is hoping the experience will carry into this fall and

help them not make the turnovers and mental errors that were made last season. The Tigers were young last year and Kellogg feels like that was a contributing factor in the season. “It wasn’t their physical ability that held them back last year, it was more from an experience standpoint,” Kellogg said. The team worked hard in the spring to correct the problems from last year. He went on to say that the team is still young, but

feels they will be better. Last year Kellogg introduced the multiple “I” offense, something the Tigers should be more comfortable with this year. According to Kellogg, they will spread the offense more in an attempt to let their skill people work in “space” and let the speed that they possess work for them. Kellogg said, “The team is faster this year over last and the kids work hard and love lifting weights.”

The main difference from last year is experience. “Anytime you have experience, it just makes things easier to coach,” Kellogg said. The Tigers lost two four year starters and one three year starter from their 4-3 defense, a scheme that will remain again this year. “That kind of experience is not easily replaced,” Kellogg said. “But with the other nine returning from last fall it may not be so bad.” He has one player that will make anyone smile and that is David Wing. Wing is 6’4” and weighs in at 275 lbs. The senior is a four-year starter at right offensive guard. He is a three-year starter on the other side of the ball at defensive end. Wing was All-District on both sides of the ball in 2007. Kellogg said, “His motor runs a 100 miles an hour all the time.” This season, the Tigers will be able to put more players on the field and will only have one going both ways. That is a change from last year where it was the exact opposite.

The strengths of the team will be playing experience, team speed, and depth. According to Kellogg, this is the most kids out for the Tigers since the 2004 season. They have 56 athletes on the roster for the Tigers this year. Commenting on his outlook for the Tigers, Kellogg said, “Eliminate mistakes, eliminate penalties and turnovers and I think we can play with anybody on our schedule.” He has respect for the other programs. He said that every week is a playoff game in district, but thinks they have the athletes that can match up with everyone. DeQuincy will take on South Cameron at home this year. Kellogg says this game is important in setting the tone for the season. South Cameron and DeQuincy battle it our every year and it has become a rivalry. It is always the first game for both schools and, even though it is a non-district affair, the fans come out in numbers to support both teams.

The Kinder Yellowjackets have some positions with question marks, according to head coach Jeff Wainwright. “We are hoping to use the pre-district schedule to get those question marks taken off and make a competitive run at district,” he said. He talked about the quality teams they will face in their district. District 5-AA is a small district and only has four

teams: Welsh, Vinton, Lake Arthur, and Kinder. “Being in such a small district does not give you much room for error, so any loss can set you back,” he said. Kinder will have some younger people on both sides of the ball this season. “Depth is a serious concern. The guys that we are going to have on the field will be very capable of doing their job, but if we have many injuries, we may struggle,” said Wainwright. Kinder lost quite a few seniors and other

personnel for various reasons. “It did open up a chance for a lot of younger guys to step up and play. They’re going to be good football players. It’s just a matter of how many games into the season it is going to take us to get them ready,” he said. Offensively, the Yellowjackets run the spread and will work out of the shotgun, using four wide outs and one tailback. The offense should be okay with eight returning that have started or had a lot of playing time last fall.

The defense will have more to work on as there will only be four coming back to help. One end of the defensive line should be okay with senior Josh Kingery returning. He weighs in at 6’2”, 240 lbs., and has fournine speed. Kingery plays defensive end for the Yellowjackets and has quite a few schools at the next level scouting him.. Touching once again on the issue of depth, Wainwright said that in the last three years, they've been going basically one way. “This year, we are going to have some kids going both ways and that concerns me,” he said. When asked about team strengths, Wainwright said “the number one thing that we are going to have to lean on all season is going to be our team speed. We’ve got a lot of above-average fast kids

on the team.” Coach feels that he has above average speed from his quarterback down to the lineman. The second thing Wainwright talked about was his team’s attitude, saying “We’ve got a bunch of guys on the team that believe they can win, and they are going to play with a purpose of knowing how to win.” Wainwright feels that if the team can keep from getting banged up too badly, they will be able to compete with anybody. When you look at the district, staying injury free will be very critical, especially if they don’t have experience to fill the voids injuries create. With the teams in this district, not getting banged up might be difficult.

District 5-2A

In District 5-2A, something special has happened to the Lake Arthur Tigers this year. For the first time in head coach Chad Lavergne’s tenure, the team has enough players to go one way on both sides of the ball. This is a luxury in 5-2A play, and due in part to a strong junior class. Only six sen-

iors will run the gridiron this year, but over 20 juniors will be putting on the Tiger jersey. "We'll have seven or eight juniors on both sides of the ball this season," said Lavergne, adding "About half of those have play time from last year." One of the differences from last year is the obvious depth that Lake Arthur will have going into this season. “It’s a domino effect when you are able to do that (playing one way)," said Lavergne. "Now you are able to

put your starters more on specialty teams, special teams should improve, along with offense and defense.” Offensively, the Tigers will run the split back veer as well as one back sets. “We have some skill people and some speed, we are just real small on the line,” Lavergne commented. The offense will be balanced in gaining yards both on the ground and in the air, however, the team will not shy away from putting it in the air first.

One of the players that will be catching the ball is junior Jacob Martin. At just 5’7” and 135 lbs., Martin runs very good routes, has deceptive speed and had two games last year over 100 yards.“He is dangerous,”Lavergne said. The team is making a change this year defensively and will run the “fifty” base defense with cover two in the secondary. Lavergne moved from the 4-3 to take better advantage of his players speed as well as an experienced secondary that will be returning this year. Senior Trey Dugas had a good year last season at defensive end and was “a two way starter with asthma,” according to Lavergne. “We are looking for him to have a better season this year because he will not be going both ways.”

Lake Arthur only has seven starters returning, three on offense and four on defense. Helping with experience are the underclassmen coming in that have a lot of play time from last year. Lavergne says the key to winning district is consistency and coming on strong in the end. "We need to play good football towards the end of the year,” he said. “We have to learn to win the close games.” The Tiger’s first step will be to finish above .500 in 2008, improving upon their 4-5 record of the ‘07 season. Commenting on the overall picture, Lavergne concluded that “playing in such a small district, you just can’t afford to lose any games.”

District 5-2A

The Lions of Vinton High School are looking to be in contention this fall. Second year head Lion Wendell LeJeune is confident about his team, looking to improve on the team’s three and six record from last fall. “Last year they were young and made some young mistakes,” LeJeune said. Growing pains will still be there, but this year he feels that his team will be competing on pretty even footing with the rest of the 52A district this year. One problem

that the Lions will face this year is depth. LeJeune says he doesn’t believe they will be able to keep some of his players from going both ways. That will be important as they go into the season. Vinton has made some changes with personnel, and one is the movement of senior Derek LeJeune (no relation) to quarterback. Derek was at the receiver and free safety positions last year, but this season will be taking snaps. Playing quarterback last year was Geremy Ross. Ross will be a junior this year and has

been moved to the wide receiver position. “It will give us a little more speed on the outside which will help,” Coach LeJeune said. “He has a real high cruising speed.” Chris Sterling is a 160-pound senior who will be at the running back position. LeJeune noted that he also has good speed and is a “tough kid.” The Lions will run the spread offense and according to LeJeune, they will be under center more this year than in the past. Also, look for the Lions to use two quarterbacks from time to time. “I like the differences that

it will create for the defenses,” said LeJeune. “It gives the other teams a little bit more to practice against.” LeJeune stated that the strength for the Lions will be their 4-2-5 defense. One leader that will help set the defensive tone is returning senior and all district linebacker Joe Biondini. He is 5’10”, 180 lbs. and as a sophomore, started at the strong safety. Last year, Joe found a home at linebacker. Coach says he is just a good football player. Another defensive standout for Vinton is senior Dakota Nezat. Nezat, like Biondini, started at one position (linebacker) his sophomore year, but found his home at strong safety in his junior season. Nezat is also a first team All-District player.

LeJeune likes his chances going into this season and feels that they will need to control the ball. He thinks if they can do that and his defense does what it is supposed to do, they can compete. The defense should be ahead of the offense early. Look for the Lions to have a real solid running game. The team has a lot of seniors and the game experience and maturity they bring will definitely help. Going into district, LeJeune has a lot of respect for the other teams in 5-2A, but feels that his team will be competing for the district crown. A lot of things have to happen, but LeJeune seems to have his team going in the right direction with confidence.

The Greyhounds of Welsh High have Robbie Gates as their pack leader. This is Gates second year as top dog and first full year at his position. He took over after spring training in 2007 and said they are looking forward to the 2008 season. The dogs have 78 kids on the team and with those numbers should be able to have some depth. “We have a lot of kids coming back from last season and have a large senior group as well,” said Gates.

"The team had a real good spring in the weight room and on the field, and they had a real good summer as well,” he said. There were 11 seniors lost from last season. Because of that, Gates is looking to play a lot of his kids early, giving the team experience to draw upon later in the season. A difference for this year’s team over last will be speed. Gates said they have more of it this year. With the added speed, the team will be changing the defense from the fourtwo five to the four-three. “It’s a better fit for us and with the speed we have, will

allow us to be a bit more aggressive,” said Gates. On the other side of the ball, the Greyhounds will run the “Wing T.” “This is a base offense giving us the ability to get pretty multiple and do things out of it; we are not going to just run the sweep all night,” he said. Gates said they have three real good backs this year, allowing them to move one of the running backs from last season to quarterback. Senior Mike Caraway will be under the center taking snaps for the team

and is one of the fastest athletes the Greyhounds have, according to Gates. Behind Caraway will be senior Kade Frey. Frey has four-six speed and at 6’1” and 190 lbs. has the size to carry the ball from the fullback position. Along with Frey is junior tailback Will Guidry and senior Kegan Ryder in the wingback position. Coach says they all have good speed and are strong runners. Strengths for the dogs will be the running game, the defense against the pass, and special teams. “We are a work in progress,” said Gates. “However, I believe that by mid-season we should be fine.”

Winning the district will not be easy. Gates stated, “I feel like our team will need to be fortunate and come through the non-district games in good shape.” The dogs are trying to put eleven and eleven on the field. However, if they sustain any injuries that could change. The first two games will be key games for Welsh. Gates wants to set things up early and be in the win column after they play Red River and Rayne. Look for the Greyhounds to be competitive and to again make things interesting in District 5-2A.

SPORTS Health

Teen Athletes and Steriods:

Know the Facts Stories about athletes and steroids seem to pop up regularly in the news. Some professional baseball players, cyclists, and track stars have been accused of — and in some cases have admitted to — using steroids to give them an edge competitively. And steroid use has trickled down to younger athletes too, who face fierce pressure to be stronger and faster, and to make it to college and professional leagues. Some research has shown that 5% of teen boys and 2.5% of teen girls have used some form of anabolic steroids. Steroids promise bold results, but there is little proof that they deliver any such benefits. Extensive research, however, shows how they can harm developing kids — with some of these ill effects not likely to turn up until years later. And steroids are illegal, too. It’s important to understand the facts about steroids, their side effects, and what can drive kids to try them. Being aware of the kinds of pressures kids deal with in sports can help you make sure that your child isn’t at risk. WHAT ARE STEROIDS? Drugs commonly referred to as “steroids” are classified as anabolic (or anabolic-androgenic) and corticosteroids. Corticosteroids, such as cortisone, are drugs that doctors typically prescribe to help control inflammation in the body. They’re often used to help control conditions like asthma and lupus. They’re not the same as the anabolic steroids that receive so much media attention for their use by some athletes and bodybuilders. Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones that can boost the body’s ability to produce muscle and prevent muscle breakdown. Some athletes take steroids in the hopes that they will improve their PAGE 52

AUGUST 28, 2008

ability to run faster, hit farther, lift heavier weights, jump higher, or have more endurance. In the United States, it is against the law to use anabolic steroids without a prescription. Androstenedione, or “andro,” is a kind of anabolic steroid taken by athletes who want to build muscle. But research suggests that andro taken in large doses every day can significantly increase levels of testosterone, which can lead to a number of health problems. HOW DO ANABOLIC STEROIDS WORK? Anabolic steroids are drugs that resemble the chemical structure of the body’s natural sex hormone testosterone, which is made naturally by the body. Testosterone directs the body to produce or enhance male characteristics such as increased muscle mass, facial hair growth, and deepening of the voice, and is an important part of male development during puberty. When anabolic steroids increase the levels of testosterone in the blood, they stimulate muscle tissue in the body to grow larger and stronger. However, the effects of too much testosterone circulating in the body can be harmful over time. DANGERS OF ANABOLIC STEROIDS Steroids are dangerous for two reasons: They are illegal, and they can damage a person’s health, especially if used in large doses over time. Also, the health problems caused by steroids may not appear until years after the steroids are taken. Although they might help build muscle, steroids can produce very serious side effects. Using steroids for a long time can negatively affect the reproductive system. In males, steroids can lead to impotence; a reduction in the amount of sperm produced in the testicles, and even reduced testicle size. Females who use steroids may have problems with their menstrual cycles because steroids can disrupt the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries. This disruption can cause long-term problems with fertility. Teen girls and women also risk the additional side

effects of male-type facial and body hair growth, male-pattern baldness, and deepening of the voice.

toned and fit can be fierce.

Steroids taken for an extended period of time also can cause:

• discussing healthy competition with them, • talking about the coaches’ and team members’ attitudes toward steroids, • knowing what kind of sports environments they compete in, and • encouraging them to prepare mentally and physically for competition by eating well and getting enough rest.

• stunted growth in teens (by causing bones to mature too fast and stop growing at an early age), • liver tumors, • abnormal enlargement of the heart muscles, • violent, aggressive behavior and mood swings, • blood lipid abnormalities that contribute to heart disease, • acne (or a worsening of acne), • increased breast growth in males, especially teens, • irreversible stretch marks, • a heightened tendency for hair loss and male-pattern baldness, and • muscle aches. In addition to the health risks, kids who use steroids without prescription are breaking the law. Drug testing for all athletes has become more prevalent, and those who fail a drug test for steroids can face legal consequences, including jail time, monetary fines, exclusion from an event or team, or forfeiture of trophies or medals. Andro use has been banned by many sports organizations, including the International Olympic Committee, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Association of Tennis Professionals, and most high school athletic associations.

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT STEROIDS Many pressures may drive young athletes to experiment with steroids. Although most athletes exercise hard, eat properly, and take care of their bodies to maintain optimal fitness and performance levels, athletic competition and the desire to look physically

Help kids handle these pressures by:

If you suspect your child is using steroids, watch for these warning signs: • exaggerated mood swings: • worsening acne • unusually greasy skin with stretch marks • a sudden increase in muscle size If you see any of these signs in your child, talk with your doctor. Steroids may give kids the sense that they’re stronger and more athletic, but the consequences are too dangerous to risk. Help kids stay away from steroids by encouraging healthy eating and fitness habits that will help them feel well prepared for competition. When steroid use among pro athletes is in the news, use that as a launching point to discuss the issue, making sure your child understands the health risks, the possibility of legal trouble, and the concept that using steroids is cheating. District 5-1A

When the final regular season game was played last year, Hamilton Christian Academy found itself atop of the 5-2A district with no defeats in district play, and only a single loss to 4-3A standout St. Louis. “We are really favored and blessed,” said head coach Joseph Maggio. “We had a lot of talent last year that graduated, but the Lord has just blessed us with new talent. Both our offensive and defensive lines I think are really top notch.”

He went on to say that he is pleased with the team's talent this year. Isaiah Davis will be stepping into the leadership role as starting quarterback and according to Maggio, has a couple of colleges already looking at him. “Kyle Peterson is coming back at the running back position and will also play in the defensive backfield," said the Warrior’s skipper. “Darrius Thomas in the shadows last year…will be a force to be reckoned with.” Sitting back and assessing the 2008 squad, Maggio stated the season will sport a different “gumbo.” The analogy he describes is one of different flavors and he likens his teams to the

different kinds of gumbo. “Last year may have been seafood and this one may be a chicken gumbo, but it’s going to be good." A little different seasoning and the contents are slightly different, but the outcome is the same...good stuff. The team will field 13 seniors to the lineup for the coming season. "The kids have been working hard and it’s just different…our seniors and our coaches on and off the field, they have a lot of say and ownership in this team and the direction that it goes. Our seniors definitely, unbelievably have been remarkable in their leadership,” said Maggio.

The offense will have a couple of 6’ tall receivers in John Johnson and Tyler Roberts. Chris Avery will add speed to an already fast receiving corp and offense which Coach Maggio feels should be pretty good. Brandon Maggio will be the offensive coordinator again this year, running a multiple offense along with the split back veer. Look for the team to “spread out” and with the O-line in good shape, make things difficult to defend. Defensively, Hamilton runs a 4-3 and has seven starters returning. It is a defensive scheme that allowed only 73 points in district play last year, taking the top spot in the district. With the bulk of the defense coming back, the Warriors should once again be tough defensively. Maggio mentioned more than once how much “senior leadership” is playing a role for his team. Summer workouts are not mandatory, but coach says

“we’ve had more attend this summer than all my 30 years.” He talked about a couple of other strengths the team has. One is team speed and the other is the line, both offense and defense. “When I think about our linemen, I think good thoughts,” he said. Many will be seniors this year. Maggio says, “really and truly, I think that is where the battles are won.” The key for Hamilton to win district is “focus.” “The heart and the desire are there,” says Maggio. “They can’t lose their focus, it can’t be a me or I thing, it has got to be team, team, what can I do to help the team. The outlook is great and the attitudes are super.” A strong defense, leadership from the seniors and a rock solid coaching staff should put Hamilton in direct contention for the District 5-A title, a road that is sure to run through Basile in '08.

Merryville High School has had six different coaches in as many years, keeping the program from fully developing. New head coach Mark Delaney expects things will be different in the coming season. “Merryville has given me an opportunity and they will not regret it,” said Delaney. He has been coaching for 17

years, three of those in the college ranks at his alma mater, Henderson State. This will be Delaney’s first stint as head of a football program. Delaney states that the outlook for the Panthers is a positive one. “There will be a lot of teaching… I want to concentrate on technique and learning how to finish the game,” said the freshman coach. “Being single A means we are going to have to use athletes going both ways, so it is our job to get them in shape.”

Delaney signed on in the first part of June and was not at Merryville for spring training. He was able to set up a summer program for those athletes that wanted to participate and was pleased with the turnout. Offensively, the Panthers will operate out of a multiple “Wing T.” Delaney feels that this offense is a good starting ground and is the type of offense you can build from. He added, “I believe that offense is about fitting around the personnel that you have. Given

that belief, Delaney is making the wing “T” the offense of choice to start his program. At the time of the interview, Delaney had not had time to evaluate his players individually, so he was unable to comment on the athletes and their positions. “I believe defense wins games for you,” said Delaney. This year the Panthers will implement a 4-2-5 defense. He hopes to have his defense up and running quickly as he starts his first season. “Offense puts points on the board, but when it comes down to it, I want that good solid defense,” he said. “The key to a good team is being balanced,” Delaney said. “If you don’t control the ball on

offense, that puts your defense in a bind, so we are going to be balanced.” The schedule for Merryville is not an easy one. When asked about the schedule he said, “I believe to be the best, you have to play the best.” That said, don’t look for the Panthers to shy away from any of the competition. There will be 14 positions on both sides of the ball filled with experienced athletes from last season. That experience should be helpful to the coaching staff. With one of the toughest districts in 1-A ball, the Panthers can use all the pluses they can muster.

Oberlin High School brings Pat Miller in as the head Tiger of the football team. Miller was with the Merryville program in ‘07, and coming in, has some work ahead of him. "This year will be a rebuilding year as we lost sixteen seniors last year,” he said. That might be a huge understatement with the loss of such talent as Byron Skinner, Tyler Strother and Gerald Artist in the backfield. “They all played, many on both sides of the ball. We have

four returning on offense and four on defense, so this is definitely a rebuilding year,” he said. “Going through the spring with these guys, they were real impressive, just watching them in the spring game against Lake Arthur.” Miller said, “I really feel good about our running game.” The offense will not change from what Oberlin has been running. Oberlin runs the double wing and has had great success with it in the past. Miller said, “The kids believe in it and the coaches here believe in it, so we are going to continue to run it. The old saying is true, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” “Defensively, we are going to continue to run the same thing; they lead the district last year in defen-

sive stats,” said Miller. The defense will be the fourtwo-five. According to Miller, one strength Oberlin does have is the running game. He said, “that’s what we do here, we run the football. We feel we’ve got a lot of depth in that category, having four or five guys we think can carry the ball.” Special teams will also play to a large part of future success for the Tigers. Miller is a believer in special teams and will put a lot of emphasis in that area. “I do make it a big part of our strategy and our games,” he said. The freshman coach said he feels good about one of his young running backs. He likes sophomore

Cedric Skinner. Skinner started at one of the linebacker positions for the Tigers last fall and saw some play time with the offense. “He has real good vision, has speed and size,” said Miller. Look for Skinner to be more involved with the offense this fall. Returning Senior Matt Karam will be under center for the Tigers offensively. Karam is a three year starter at the quarterback position, has good speed and a good arm. Miller feels that if they need to throw the ball, Karam will get the job done. Don’t look for that to happen though, as the Tigers will primarily be focused on the run. Center Cody Dubroc does a great job in the middle of the line according to Miller. “That’s where this offense starts, at center,” he said. Dubroc is 6’1” and weighs in at 340 lbs. and is just a junior this season. Junior inside linebacker Jacob Ware “really has a nose for the football” said Miller. He feels that Jacob

could be one of the area’s best if he continues to work and improve. Ware is 5’11”, 175 lbs., has four-seven, four-eight speed and will get after you according to Miller. The 2007 season was one of great disappointment for the Tigers. The previous year saw the team go undefeated in regular play at 10-0. With so many returning seniors and great talent, a repeat of that performance was expected, but didn't materialize under then head coach Larry Alexander. Alexander is now principal at the school. The Tigers always enjoy a relatively sizable stable of talent year in and year out. Predictiablity of a single deminsion attack on offense might be their Achilles heel. Mixing it up with Karam’s talent in the air should provide the diversity they need to keep defenses off balance. But as always, defense will be their key. When asked about their changes for district, Miller said, “If we can steal one or two, we’ve got a chance.”

Perry Lalande, the skipper for the Tarpons of South Cameron High School says they are hoping to do better than they did last year. The group ended the 2007 season with a loss to Oak Grove in the first round of the playoffs. Hurricane Rita coming through a few seasons back didn't do the Tarpons any favors. “The effect of that

event is is still being felt on our program today,” said Lalande. “Our numbers are way down.” They only have about 40 kids compared to 1986 when South Cameron had somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-plus coming out to play ball. They have a lot of athletes from last fall returning, and because of that, Lalande hopes to win a few more than last year and do much better in the playoffs. Last season, Lalande put in the 4-2-5 defense, which was quite a big change for the Tarpons. “I

have been running the 50 defense for 30 years, so we had to overcome a lot last year,” Lalande said. With the returning personnel, he feels they will be much better defensively this season. A lot of their skill people are coming back and he likes what is there. The offensive line will be young this year and will have two starters returning, and with those two Lalande feels like he will have something to build around. They also have some skill people returning on the offense. “We are not going to win

too many races, but at least if we are going in the right direction it helps us and we should be okay,” he said. The offense has been a multiple type, but Lalande is going back to the “Wing T” this season in an effort to make better use of his players. One of the things that has him a little worried is the small numbers. “Each year it gets more difficult,” he said. “Right now in the beginning stages, we’ve got a lot of people going both ways so that is going to be tough.” Junior Dex Murphy was a starter at free safety for the Tarpons last season. He covered double duty by alternating on offense in the backfield. This season, look for him to be more involved offensively. There will be four returning starters on offense and six returning on the defensive side of the ball. Joey Trosclair played at the outside linebacker position and the wide receiver spot last season. Lalande has moved him into the tight end position offensively and has praise for Trosclair as one of the leaders for the Tarpons this season.

South Cameron has Kyle Little returning to take the snaps this season. With a year of experience under his belt, he should do well this fall. The district that the Tarpons compete in is one of the best in the state. With the likes of Basile, Oberlin, and Hamilton Christian, the district is solid from top to bottom. Merryville and Elton both have new coaches, but both schools have history and like to win. If there is a light that can be found, it may be that South Cameron has both Basile and Hamilton Christian at home this year. Lalande is optimistic but knows it will be tough. “They play well no matter where they are,” he said. South Cameron may not have speed, and they may be down in their numbers, but if you think Perry Lalande won’t have his team ready you’ll be mistaken. Lalande has been around a while and you’d better believe the Tarpons will be on the field ready to go for kickoff.

Carl Flanagan has left South Beauregard to lead the Elton Indians into a new era. Flanagan took the Knights of South Beau to the playoffs last year, — a history-making season for the Knights. They ended the regular season with a 73 record, the best ever for South Beau. Taking that into consideration, the Elton Indians should have high expectations from Flanagan. Truth is, Flanagan is returning to the very place where he held his first head coaching job from 1985 to 1989. Flanagan has been coaching for

33 years and also held coaching positions at Sulphur High and Sam Houston High. “I’m familiar with the community,” said Flanagan. “Several of the kids I’m coaching, I coached their parents or relatives. It’s pretty neat. I'm really enjoying it.” This veteran coach has his work cut out for him at Elton. He will inherit a program that went 0-10 last season; however, only two seniors graduated from last year’s team. “The upside to this story is, virtually everybody is coming back,” he said. “Although they have had some bad experiences, it’s been experi-

ence on Friday night. That means that they know what it is like to be in a varsity game and they know what to expect, and that is the upside for us.” The Indians have six seniors returning to the squad. According to Flanagan, a big plus is returning signal caller Austin Daggett. The spring brought some changes for the team. He took things slow to get the group on track. Another thing that has changed for this year’s squad is the number of athletes coming out to play ball. According to Flanagan, Elton ended the season last year with only 23 kids. “That makes it

hard to compete,” he said. Elton is a small 1-A school, so numbers are important. The team had 43 on the field this past spring. “It gives us a fighting chance,” said Flanagan. The bulk of the numbers are with the incoming freshman and sophomores, and coach is pleased that he has young athletes interested in playing. Elton will run a multiple “I” offense this season and will move the tailback around to give them some options and show different formations. Changes that have been made on the offense is the movement of Todd White from the interior line to tight end. Brennan Robinson will be on the strong side of the line at tackle next to White. The right side of the line should be solid as both lineman are seniors with experience. At the right guard is sophomore Jacob

Robinson, who had some play time last season. Defense will be a 4-3 for the Indians and Flanagan says they will be “active and move a lot.” Josh Vidrine was one of the Indians leading tacklers last year and he will be returning to the weakside linebacker position. There will be a few new faces for the Indians, but they have a lot returning on both sides of the ball. Look for the Indians to improve slowly. Should this happen, they could be in the middle of things by the time playoffs roll around. Elton has a history of being a tough team. With last season behind them, they are working toward improvement. Coach Flanagan appears to be comfortable there, so don’t be surprised if you see the Indians making some noise late in the season.

The Basile Bearcats have Coach Tony Bertrand as the man in charge. Tony is in his 15th year at Basile, third as head coach. When asked about his overall outlook for the season, Coach Bertrand stated that they’re excited to get started and find that out themselves. “I think every year your goal is to win the district championship,” said Bertrand. “There are different goals you try to achieve and set each year. I try to instill in the kids that they must set goals and work hard to achieve them.” Basile faces three AA ball clubs and a tough St. Edmund

squad before they start district play. Bertrand stated that if they can come out of the first half of their season with some wins and remain healthy, they should be well poised to begin district play. “The tough non-district prepares you for district,” he said. When asked asked about his district (Elton, South Cameron, Oberlin, Merryville, and Hamilton Christian), he replied, “Our district traditionally has been a very tough one. Year in and year out we are going to send at least four teams to the playoffs. In years past, we've sent as many as five.” The Bearcats will have six players coming

back on their Pro “I” offense. According to coach this offense will allow the Bearcats to “spread the ball around a little.” They are bringing back a lot of experience especially in the skill positions. The one place Bertrand feels confident about is his running game and believes this to be the Bearcat’s best strength. The backfield will have returning senior all district running back Derrick Thomas. He rushed for 1,200 yards last season and is back ready to go. With thoroughbreds in the backfield, don’t think Basile is going to just keep it on the ground. “We are going to try and throw the ball a little bit more than last year,” said Bertrand. Basile should

be able to do that with the help of three-year starting receiver Jon Fournerat hauling in the ball from junior quarterback Fabian Bellard. Bellard, starting receiver in ‘07, will start at quarterback for the Bearcats this season. The team will field a solid defense this season. The secondary is one area the Cats will not have to worry about defensively. Three-year starter Fabian Bellard will be back there with a lot of help from seniors. One of the corners will be covered by returning senior Josh Cornerly, a first team all district standout. Cornerly lead the team with interceptions last year, and should again make his side of the field difficult to penetrate for all opposing teams. Two-year starting senior Mason Ortego will be at linebacker. “He is one of the leaders on defense,” said Bears coach Bertrand. Second team all district player

Fournerat will be at another linebacker position for the Cats. “If our lineman develop, we will be okay,” said Bertrand. Bertrand is quite confident of this year’s team, in particular, their leadership abilities. “There are 14 seniors on the club and they have seen a little bit of everything. I feel that this will provide good leadership on the field.” He feels the key for his team to win district is to “stay healthy and have a little bit of luck.” With five players going both ways, health and conditioning is something the team will have to hope and strive for. However, with the amount of talent the Bearcats will be fielding, skill and ability will take the place of lady luck. There is no doubt that the Bearcats are the 5-AA team to be reckoned with.
