Barbe Buccaneers The Barbe Buccaneers have never had a losing season under head coach Jimmy Shaver. Never. Not one. That is quite an accomplishment when you realize
he has been the head coach for 27 years. He hopes to continue that tradition even though Barbe lost nine starters on defense from last season, but only four from the offense (only one starting lineman). Most notable losses are Janzen Jackson, Ernest Celestie, and Eric Cutrera from the offensive side of the ball. Offensively, the Bucks will again implement the spread, and there are a couple of returning players that could have a real impact. Mike Guillory will be returning
to the backfield, producing 1,138 all purpose yards with an average 11.3 yards per carry. Kevin Berard is also returning as receiver. He had 35 receptions with a 17.0 yard average per catch last season. Look for Berard to continue where he left off with catches from starting quarterback Jared Foster this fall. Foster will be filling the quarterback position for the Buccaneers. “Foster has some work ahead of him, but I’m really confident in him to lead our team,” said Shaver.
Buc receiver Dustin White will be returning, where he produced 10 receptions for the team with an average of 14.9 yards each in 2008. “I think we’ll be fine on offense,” said Shaver. “We have some (really talented) younger players coming up.” While he is confident in his offense, he did acknowledge that there were key skilled positions lost and that those holes will need to be filled quickly in order to measure up to their 2008 performance. With only one player missing

from the offensive line from last season, the O-line should be the least of Barbe’s worries. The team put up good numbers last season. The offense had 4,754 total offensive yards, averaging 365.7 yards per game. The Buc defense graduated nine starters, which is a concern for Shaver. “We’ll need our guys to step up and make an impact quickly,” said Shavers. The team will not have a lot of size to speak of on defense, relying on speed to make the difference, particularly with the linebacker and defensive back positions. Senior Linebacker Logan Hamilton will be returning. “Logan will be tough defensively,” Shaver commented. “He’s one of our players that will make AT CARENCRO . . . . . . . . . . . an early impact to shore up a young defense. He’s a really good player.” Leon Francois had quite a bit of play time last fall and will be at one of the corners. He will be another player Shaver will rely upon early. The team will again stay with the 3 man front this season. Shaver said that he feels this scheme will help the squad utilize their smaller, quicker players. “With this defense, you only need three guys with some size,” said Shaver. He added “With the type of people we have it is what we need to do.” Coach Shaver says that he likes what he sees in the team. While he has some concerns, the goal is to have a winning season and make the playoffs. “Anything less than that and I am not happy.”

LaGrange Gators The LaGrange Gators enter their second year under Head Coach Jules Sullen. Sullen has 14 years of coaching experience and this year at LaGrange, according to Sullen, there will be some changes.
The Gators have moved up to 5A and will compete with Barbe, Sulphur, Acadiana and Lafayette for district. “I think this is one of the toughest districts in the state,” Sullen said. “I was so eager to get back here to Southwest Louisiana for the football and the coaching. How ironic that I have come back to the toughest 5A district.” Sullen says LaGrange will have average speed. “I would grade us probably at a C+. I think on one side of the ball we are a little bit
faster than the other.” One of the things the team has been doing this off season is competing in the 7 on 7 tournaments around the state. They have done very well and the team qualified for the national competition in Hoover, Alabama. Seven on seven is pitting seven skill players from one team against seven skill players from another team. It is basically a competition without linemen, using only receivers and backs on offense versus secondary personnel on defense.
Offensively, the Gators will run a multiple offense and will have players returning. Darius Edwards is 6’0” 190 lbs and was second team All State last year. He rushed for over 1000 yards, had twenty eight receptions for 385 yards, 10 rushing touchdowns and 8 receiving. Edwards will return as a junior in the Gator backfield. Sullen said of Edwards, “He is a special kid and we have pretty much decided to spread him out to let him play the Z receiver so we can get him the ball in space. I think he is going to be a

big plus for us.” Senior Derek Bellard will return as quarterback and should pick up where he left off. Bellard threw for 1400 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. He also had 200 yards rushing with one TD. Brandon Williams is another skill player that was on defense early last year. He was moved to running back late. “Brandon Williams is a kid we are really high on. He only played during district and was selected as a second team all district skill player,” said Sullen. He will return as a senior at the receiver position and take on the punting duties as well this fall. “Defensively, everything is based out of the 4-2-5 concept, but we will be multiple,” said Sullen. “Every week determines what we are going to do.” The defense will only have five starters returning

and one of those is Jason Guidry. Guidry is 5’9” 220 lbs plays linebacker and had sixty five tackles last season. David O’Brien, another senior linebacker at 5’9” 225 lbs had thirty five tackles last year and will also return to the defense. The Gators have some challenges ahead this season Sullen mentioned, saying “I think the biggest thing that I am trying to do right now is to show them how to be consistent and how to finish games.” Last year, LaGrange lost a game against Comeaux in the last few minutes. Sullen said “I think that was the turning point. Sometimes you have to take one on the chin in order for you to stay focused, bounce back or to make sure you keep pushing forward. They (the players) understood that they could compete with the 5A schools.”

Sulphur Golden Tornadoes The Sulphur Golden Tors lost the bulk of their offensive line last season. Replacing the holes in the line will be a priority this fall for head coach Paul
Bourgeois. Another area he will need to address is the defense as a whole. The Tors have Garrett McCain returning at quarterback and it’s possible he’ll have a couple of very capable players to throw to. Senior Chip Armelin has been playing basketball for the Tors and he may decide to play football this fall. Armelin is 6’3” 195lbs with good speed and his athleticism would be a plus for the offense. Will Hassien is going to be a three year starter at
receiver this fall and brings talent with experience to the offense. McCain and Hassien are being recruited and Armelin may be as well depending on if he plays and how quick he can put things together. Some other skill players returning to the offense are senior running back Calvin Peco, junior running back Austin Sheperd and senior fullback Allen Joseph. Peco has 4.4 second speed and Sheperd runs the forty in 4.5 seconds. Joseph weighs
225lbs and is not far behind in speed at 4.7 seconds for the forty. Joseph is strong and can run over people according to Bourgeois. The Tor offense should be one of the programs strengths with the experience that will return there. The skill positions have the potential to be one of the best groups out of Sulphur in a while. “We potentially have some good skill people coming in, but we are untested. If things work out and fall into place we have a good chance of being successful,”

Bourgeois said. The defense for the Tors is the 4-3 but they will make adjustments if necessary. “With all the offenses we see you have to be able to change to try and cover them. We may go to a three man front or put more in the box if we have to,” he said. Two notable returnees are seniors Corris Grant and Blake Sanner. Grant was a starter last season and Sanner had quite a bit of time on the field. They will return to the defensive line and bring much needed experience there. The defense is a concern for Bourgeois. While he has positions filled, he is waiting for the season to begin, saying, “We’ll know where we are after the first
couple of games.” Bourgeois continued, “We’ve got a group of kids that have worked hard this summer and dedicated themselves. They want to have a successful season, and want to do more. It’s been one of our better summers since I’ve been here with participation.” “Sulphur’s tradition is strong defense and ball control offensively. It could be that we have to score a little bit more,” Bourgeois said. “That’s not Sulphur’s tradition, but we obviously know we have to adjust to whatever it takes to win ball games.”

Tackling High School Football Injuries Football is one of the most popular – if not the most popular– high school sport. Unfortunately, it’s also the leading cause of sports-related injuries. According to a new report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 920,000 young people age 18 and under were treated for football-related injuries last year in hospital emergency rooms, doctors’ offices and clinics. Researchers with the Center for Injury Research and Policy also found a significant difference between the types of injuries sustained by high school and college football players. “This study is important because it is the first nation-wide study to compare injuries among high school and college football players, and the results reflect what we see here in Southwest Louisiana,” says Steven Hale MD, orthopaedic surgeon with Center for Orthopaedics. “High school players are at higher risk of experiencing more serious injuries.” According to the study, four out of every 1,000 high school football exposures resulted in an injury, while eight out of every 1,000 collegiate football exposures resulted in an injury. Although college players were twice as likely to sustain an injury as high school players, high school players experienced more serious injuries, with a greater proportion of season-ending injuries, fractures and concussions. Dr. Hale says there are several reasons that high school players experience more serious injuries. “Younger athletes are less physically mature and have less muscle mass than older athletes. Their growth plates are incomplete, which means their bones are still growing, developing and strengthening. In addition, inexperienced athletic techniques also add to the risk of injury in high school players in many situations. Good coaching and training can help in this area.” Researchers have found that running plays were the leading cause of injury in both high school and collegiate football, and in high school they accounted for the majority of season-ending injuries and concussions. Positions with the greatest risk of injury were running backs and linebackers. Dr. Hale says these types of injuries
12
could be reduced with additional instruction on appropriate tackling and blocking techniques as well as position-specific conditioning. “The main thing players, parents and coaches need to understand is that while football does have a high rate of injuries, injury is not inevitable and the risk can definitely be reduced,” stresses Dr. Hale. “There are many ways to reduce the number and severity of football-related injuries. For example, we typically see many ankle and knee injuries. Increased conditioning, including stretching and strength training, for these vulnerable body sites can help prevent these types of injuries.” Dr. Hale adds that another key factor parents and coaches need to remember is that high school athletes are not merely miniature versions of adult athletes. “A player shouldn’t be forced to do things he isn’t physically capable of doing. Coaches bear a prime responsibility in developing young athletes and watching for early signs of physical problems. Players also need to be encouraged to speak up when something feels wrong. They
August 28, 2009
shouldn’t be told to ‘play through the pain.’ One of the best lessons a young athlete can learn is to listen to their bodies and take care of injury sooner, rather than later, when it could become more serious and put them on the sidelines for the entire season.” Center for Orthopaedics will be offering a Sports Injury Clinic for high school athletes every Saturday morning throughout football season, beginning August 29. Experienced orthopaedic and sports medicine physician specialists will be seeing patients from 8am – 10am in CFO’s Lake Charles office, located at 1747 Imperial Blvd. (1/2 mile south of Country Club Blvd., just off of Nelson Rd). Walk-in patients are accepted and no appointment is needed. Call 721-7CFO for more information.

DeRidder Dragons Coach Eric Parmley has been in the coaching profession for 27 years, with the
last four heading up the DeRidder program. The Dragon seniors this year are the first group of young men to have been under his tutelage for all four of their high school years. “That’s the thing that is probably the most exciting and I have already had a couple of my seniors come in and say it,” Parmley said. “They said, ‘Coach, it came true; you told us when we were fresh-
man that you would be here our senior year and we’re here’.” He said that overall, it has provided stability in the program. “The kids knowing what to expect,” said Parmley. “They understand the practice schedules and the schemes. It just makes a difference when they have been there, done that.” Parmley is optimistic and excited this fall and had this to say “The
overall work ethic and attitude towards the game has been good.” The Dragons had a good off season and the team is stronger and faster, according to Parmley and the players for DeRidder are learning how to win. “I tell the players when they walk on the field, their attitude has to be ‘it isn’t that you have to go beat somebody, they’ve got to beat you’.” The program has grown steadily

since he arrived, working hard to get his team to believe in themselves. Offensively, there are some question marks, even though the Dragons have five starters returning. The Dragons will still run the Power “I”, but will go into the spread more this fall. Senior Samuel Peterson will be the quarterback and senior Stephen Richmond returns as tailback. Peterson is 6’1” 190lbs and has done well with football, but is also being recruited for his baseball talents. Richmond is 5’10” 170lbs and will bring experience and talent to the offense. The team lost lineman Halston Mills to graduation and will need to fill that loss in the offensive line. Parmley said about his offense. “I’m always concerned with linemen especially the offensive line,” said Parmley. “Some of those guys on defense are going to have to come over and help out.”
He says that the offense is a concern, and went on to say that they will have to come together and try their best to fit the pieces together. “I believe the skill level on the team is up,” he said. “You can’t turn the ball over, and you have to be patient. You put your skill guys out at receiver and throw them the ball a little bit. You work to find that right combination, right mixture prior to district. We do that and I think we will be okay.” Defensively the Dragons run the 4-2-5 and eight starters will return. Notable returnees for the defense are Senior Daniel Lyles and Sean Freeman. Lyles is 6’1” 260 and will be on the defensive line. Freeman is 5’10” 170lbs and will be in the secondary. Parmley says the key to winning district will be to “Stay healthy, continue to work hard, and keep getting better.”

Jennings Bulldogs Rusty Phelps has fifteen years as head coach for Jennings with twenty-two total years in coaching. The team was 3-6 in 2008 and still made the playoffs. With power
rankings that shows just how tough the schedule for Jennings was last year. The team was young last season but this year they have eight starters returning on offense and five returning to defense. The Bulldogs improved towards the end of last season and continued that trend this past spring according to Phelps. “I thought our spring went well. We knew about some places that we were set in, due to the fact that last year we played so many
sophomores.” He added, “Where we were hurt the most was on our defensive line and I think we identified some people there; so we will just pick back up there in August.” The Bulldogs have some very good skill players this year and Phelps said “This is probably overall, through being here for fifteen years, the best combination of skill players we have ever had. I think we have a lot of depth at those positions and I think that is one of our strengths right now.”
Jennings will run the wing T again this season but, according to Phelps, they will be a little more option oriented. The personnel they have will allow them to run the ball outside a bit more than in the past. Phelps said, “First we want to establish running the ball between the tackles. I think when we really have a lot of success offensively that’s because we are able to run the ball between the tackles. I think as the year progresses and we feel a lot more comfortable pitching the

football, you will see us run more option and getting the ball to the perimeter.” The defense Jennings will run this year is the 4-2-5 and it has become a trademark for the Bulldogs. With only five starters returning, the defensive line is where the team was hit the hardest. The Bulldogs need to fill that part of the defense and Phelps said “We just have to mature up front and have to mature up front in a hurry.” One player the Bulldogs feel good about is junior Bryce Abraham. Abraham will be the quarterback this fall and is expected to be highly recruited. There are two juniors Michael Wilridge and DaVondrick Philips that will be with him in the backfield and the team will run the wing T.
The Bulldogs will likely throw the ball a little more this season and Phelps said “I’ve got to work on turning the guy loose and letting him try one down the field.” Special teams will be an important part of game this year for the Bulldogs. Phelps worked the special teams quite a bit this spring and had this to say “I think that there are so many yards in that facet of the game that you can help yourself with both offensively and defensively.” The first part of the season will set the tone for the Bulldogs going into district play. Phelps agreed and added, “we need to stay healthy, that’s one of our main concerns, especially on the offensive and defensive line.”

Sam Houston Broncos The Sam Houston Broncos finished with a 5-5 record last season. They have 16 starters that will return evenly divided between the offense and the defense. Head coach Russ Sutherland’s outlook on the
team’s leadership this season is good. “We have 32 seniors on this years squad giving good leadership on the field,” he said. Sam Houston will again run the spread offense this season and with the returning starters on offense, should do well. The Broncos have senior Orlan
Lockhart returning to take snaps. Lockhart is 6’2” 200 lbs and was All-State at the quarterback position last year. Sutherland said “Orlan is a very good player and is a great leader.” He threw for 1900 yards and rushed for over 500. He also threw for fifteen touchdowns and

ran for seventeen last season. In addition, the team has Kip Carter, Perry Chatman, and Peter Rubin returning to some of the skill positions on offense. All three have district honors from last season. Carter is a senior running back and will also handle return duties this season. Senior Perry Chatman will help in the backfield at the fullback position. Additionally, some of the receiving will be handled by returning senior Peter Rubin. The loss of Zach Morgan and Marshall Parish from the offensive line will be difficult to replace. Both young men had special talents with All State honors, eventually signing with universities. The defense will change from the 4-3 to the 3-4 this season. Sutherland said, “We feel like it is going to be a good move for us.” “He is not a real big guy, but he is a real good player” Sutherland said of Dyllon Johnson, a 5’7” 145 lbs senior safety. “He plays way bigger than
that and he is a ‘player’. He had over eighty tackles last year.” There will be some position changes with the advent of the new 3-4. Sutherland says that he will make good use of the players he has returning, as well as players that are up and coming. “Experience will be our strength and we have players returning that I know can get the job done, because they did last year” he said. When asked about the key to winning district Sutherland said, “You’ve got to win early and you’ve got to try to stay healthy. I think that will be the key. You are going to get nicked, bumped, and bruised in this district, but you have to somehow try to start out winning.” Sutherland concluded, “We are hoping that when week ten rolls around, we are in the mix. I will be very disappointed if we aren’t in the mix for a couple of things, the district championship and looking at the playoffs.”

St. Louis Catholic Saints Mike Johns will begin his 44th year in coaching and ninth with St. Louis as head coach. One of his many tasks will be to take the St. Louis Saints into a new district this fall.
The Saints will move up into the 4-4A district with Jennings, DeRidder, Washington Marion, and Sam Houston. “That is going to be a big adjustment for us, but we are going to line up to play and compete in it,” said John. “We are expecting a very tough district, plus we have a very strong non district schedule.” He stated that last season the team lost three games, one to State Champion Lutcher, one to State runner-up Notre Dame and the other to Westlake.
Regarding the Saints offense, Johns said, “On the offensive side of the ball we have six guys who are returning starters. I think we are going to be very very solid at the skill positions.” In one of those positions will be wide receiver Kenny Brown. Brown is 5’10” 150 pounds and will be a senior this year. He is being recruited by several Division 1 schools. “He has great hands and a knack of doing things with the ball once he catches it,” Johns said.
“We will try to involve him a lot”. Johns mentioned that one of the good things about the Saints offense is that they are not just centered around one person. “On both sides of the ball, with the offensive and defensive lineman is where we are going to have to really work to improve. Hopefully by the time district gets here we will be ready to go.” “If we are struggling anywhere, it is in the lack of depth in the line. We are going to be young up front” Johns said.

Offensively, the Saints will line up in a one back spread. The quarterback position is still in question with three young men competing for it. They are senior Drew Francois, junior Bryce Laningham, and junior Mike Minaldi. Minaldi had shoulder surgery in the spring and will be somewhat limited due to recovery time. Laningham and Minaldi both played at the wide receiver and slot positions for the Saints last year. They will bring experience to the positions they play. The Saints run a very balanced offense. “You would be amazed at how the last two years our run to pass ratio was very very close in yardage,” said Johns “Defensively is where we got hit hard, we lost seven starters. The defensive front is where we got hammered pretty good. We are going to be okay at our
skill positions and at linebacker as we have both our linebackers back.” “The part of the game that we are going to be solid in is the kicking game. We have two outstanding kickers; James Bice who does our place kicking and Mark Minton behind him. Minton will handle a lot of the kickoff chores.” The Saints also have an outstanding punter in Kris Albarado. The junior is rated as one of the top ten punters in the nation in his class. Johns likes the team hustle, but one concern that has him worried is if they can stay healthy. “We feel good about going into the fall. I don’t know how we will progress, and with this schedule, how healthy can we be? With our depth, that’s what worries me, it’s keeping people healthy.”

Washington-Marion Charging Indians The Washington Marion Chargin’ Indians have put together a solid base to work from this year. Head Coach John Jenkins is looking to improve over last season. The Indians were 2-8 last year, and had no wins in district play. “If we get the type of senior
leadership that WM was known for, we are going to be a tough team,” Jenkins said. “I see us having at least a seven win season and getting past the first round of the playoffs. The schedule will change some this season with the addition of St. Louis and Jennings to the 5-4A district. Jennings was once in Washington Marion’s district. “Jennings used to be in our district in the nineties when we were 3A and I remember playing them,” Jenkins said. “They
were big games back then and I am looking forward to playing them again.” Defensively, the Indians should be tough. The Indians changed this season from the 4-2-5 to the 3-4. Jenkins says, “In our district a lot of the teams do a lot of running, eighty percent of the time they are running the ball. The object is to contain everything up front in the 3-4, and force the teams to go four downs.” Otarick Beasley will be one of the leaders for the defense. Otarick is a
6’3” 245 lb senior this year, and will be in one of the linebacker spots. At the nose guard for the Indians will be another senior; Christopher Richard at 6’2” and 347 pounds. The secondary for the Indians will have three returning seniors Keavin Fontenote, Donovan Henny, and Donta Robinson. Fontenote and Henny are four year starters. The defense has one sophomore, Robert Hendrix, that will be starting in the free safety spot. The “D” will have six returning players, and

five new starters. There are eight seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. With 10 starters returning, the Indians will run the spread offense. Gabriel Washington will be a receiver for the Indians. He had three catches for three touchdowns against LaGrange in their last game, and Jenkins looks for him to pick up right where he left off. “He is a quiet leader, he works hard, and is at practice everyday, he doesn’t complain,” said Jenkins. He is a model of what Washington Marion wants from their players.” “Gerwoski Harmon is a real good player in that he’s a quick, shifty, tough receiver/running back,” Jenkins
said. “He does a good job of finding lanes and getting positive yards.” Sophomore Desmond Richard will be at running back. He plays at 5’9” and 183 and according to Jenkins, is “real physical.” Richard can play quarterback if needed. Dwight Barker will be the signal caller for this season. He took over the team last season against Barbe and threw for 200 yards in that game. Jenkins says that he looks for more from the junior QB given his experience from last season. “I’m looking for senior leadership and few mistakes,” said Jenkins. “If they do that,” he said, “we will go into district play in a very good position.”

Eunice Bobcats The Eunice Bobcats have been lead by head coach Paul Trosclair for fourteen seasons, racking up 122 wins and only 48 losses for those years. This year, Eunice has dropped down into Class 3A with Iowa,
Westlake, Crowley, Churchpoint and Northwest. The Bobcats have been a power in Class 4A and should fair well in Class 3A. Trosclair is not as concerned about the change as he is about being competitive. “When you get to the playoffs, if you are lucky enough to get past the second round you are going to play a very good team,” he said. “If you are good enough to get that far you are going to have to be real good to get further, and that’s the
same in every class now.” Offensively, the Bobcats have traditionally run the Wing T and they will continue with it this year. Eunice lost quite a few players last fall and one loss stands out. Last year, the team graduated running back Tyler Collins. He was the all time leading rusher for Eunice High School and signed with Nichols State. Trey Ceaser is a senior this fall and will be one of the running backs to replace Collins this
season. Ceaser also had time on the field last year and will bring experience to the backfield. Senior Stuart Turner will be the starting quarterback for Eunice this season. Turner saw quite a bit of time on the field last year. The Bobcats have a reputation for run football, but this season they may throw the ball a little more. “We’ve always had a strong running game, and we plan on continuing with it,” said Trosclair. “I think with this kid though, we

are going to have to use his arm, because he throws the ball so well.” Another reason the team may throw is because of senior standout receiver Tharold Simon. Simon is 6’4” 200 lbs and has good speed. He was AllAcadiana and an All-district player last fall. The last two seasons he has lead the team in both receptions and interceptions. He has been a starter for the Bobcats since the middle of his freshman year and has recently committed to LSU. The offensive line will also have Lonnie Allison and Conner Cortina coming back. Allison is 6’2” 350lbs and plays right tackle. Cortina is 5’8” 160lbs and is a two year starter on the O-line. The 4-2-5 is the defensive set of choice for the
Bobcats and they do have some concerns. Nine players were lost to graduation, but there are two outstanding players returning. All District player Vondray Vallere will return to the linebacker spot. Vallere is 6’2” 210lbs and will be a junior this year. The other is Tharold Simon who has moved from corner to free safety. Trosclair did have one concern about his defense. “I am concerned about the secondary because we lost some really good players there, but the kids have had a really good spring, so I think we will be okay. I think it’s going to be a good district and we’re looking forward to getting started.”

Iowa Yellowjackets Head coach David Miller starts his fifth year with the Yellow Jackets and is looking to improve over last season. Last year Iowa
finished 2-6 and were not where they would have liked to be at the end of the season. The Yellow Jackets will have fifteen players returning to starting positions this fall. There are only eight seniors and they have a rather large junior class with twenty-five. “There are five goals that I want our team to accomplish this sea-
son,” Miller said. “They are senior leadership, junior class toughness, dependability from the sophomores, championship level play, and they want to be practicing over the Thanksgiving holiday.” Accomplishing this would mean they would be deep in the playoffs. Offensively, Iowa will be in the spread and they have talent at the
skill positions according to Miller. One of those talented players is Junior Gene Pete. Pete is 6’1” 185lbs and will lead the team as quarterback this fall. Miller said of Pete, “He is a very intelligent kid, and really sees the field well. He’s a very complete player; he just has to keep developing as quarterback. For him the athleticism and the knowledge is

not a problem, it’s just the experience,” he said. Behind Pete there will be two junior running backs who in the spring averaged six yards per carry. The defensive front four all return and two out of three linebackers will return for the Yellow Jackets. Miller stated that he is pleased with the defense at this point. “They play well together as a unit,” he said. “They did some really good things last year as a unit. They were just too young to stop teams and I think this year you will see a much more physical defense.” While the team took their lumps last season, Miller reaffirmed his positive outlook about his defense this season. The best thing that Miller likes about his team as a whole is the chemistry and the interaction between players. “They not only play well together, but we noticed last year that they seem to have fun
cutting up in the locker room hanging out together,” said Miller. “They are really good kids.” When asked if he had any concerns the one thing Miller came back to was the physical toughness of his juniors. “We know we have the talent and we have the kids in the right spots,” he said. “It is just a matter of the physical (toughness). We’ve got the right scheme, we’ve got the right kids, and all the ingredients are there, but the physical play.” Miller ended with a positive outlook. “We are obviously going to have a great year due to the experience that all our younger kids got last year.” He added, “Whether or not they are going to be the best team we’ve had in the history of Iowa is up to them. That’s the question we are going to answer this season. It’s a matter of playing out the season and reaching those benchmarks. For us, it’s all about those benchmarks this year; it’s all about reaching certain objectives to achieve those goals.”

Westlake Rams Head Coach Max Calderera will enter his thirty-eighth year of coaching this season with thirty- two of them as head of the Westlake program. With an overall record
of 197-148 in the win loss category, the possibility of 200 wins for Calderera looms large this year with the Rams. He will first have to figure out how to replace twenty-six seniors lost to graduation. “We were rather surprised because a lot of the kids have been in the shadows, and some of them showed they can play this past spring,” said Calderera. “A big class sometimes, especially in a triple A school, hurts you (in the end).”
Don’t look for the Rams to be unprepared because, as Calderera mentioned, they will have up and coming players. Even so, the Rams will have a tough road to travel in order to match the last two seasons. The overall record for the past two years was 24-2. One of the players to watch for is Jordan McBride. Calderera says “He came in, hustled and did a good job and has claimed one of the starting offensive line positions.”
McBride is 6’ 3” 250 lbs and will be a junior this fall. In addition to McBride is sophomore Ben Myers and at 6’2” 205. Center Robert Giffin is a 5’ 9” 200lb junior this season, a player Calderera says will make an impact. “Robert had a good spring at the center position”. Another player to watch is Tommy Foy, the brother of two time All State player Scotty Foy. Tommy will be a sophomore and is 6 foot and 230 lbs. “Tommy had

a great freshman year, and also got in some varsity ballgames last year as a freshman,” Calderera said. “Tommy did not participate in spring practice due to injury, but we expect a lot out of him.” According to Calderera, the defense will move from the 3-4 to the 50. The change reflects depth in the linebacker position. Westlake will run both defenses with emphasis on the 50. Ricky Irvin will return to the defense and will add some of the only experience the Rams will have there. Irvin is 6’ 1” 225lbs and was All State at the linebacker position last year. “Offense is probably where we are the most experienced,” Calderera said. “This spring our offense did a good job of moving the football.”
Westlake will have Donald James starting in the backfield. James is a 5’10” 225lb senior. Last season he rushed for 700 yards and was 2nd team All District. The signal caller for the Rams is Grant Norberg. Calderera says “He is going to get the job done throwing for us.” “The thing we are going to be able to do is run the football,” he said. “We’ll have players going both ways, something we didn’t do the last two years.” “The team is really unknown, not only to the people we play, but also to us coaches right now,” Calderera said. “We are looking for our players to mature and come forward early. One thing about it, we will be competitive this year.”

DeQuincy Tigers Brad Kellogg will start his third season as head coach of the DeQuincy Tigers. He’s been coaching for nine years, seven being at
DeQuincy. “I have a lot of experience coming back at my skill positions,” said Kellogg. “We are going to be pretty fast.” On defense Kellogg will have two guys on the field that run five flat or over. Everybody else will run 4.9 or better. “We are not very big though; size is going to hurt us against larger
teams such as South Beauregard,” said Kellogg. Reflecting on the season, Kellogg said, “I am 0-6 against those top three teams. One team that we have not beat is Rosepine, and the same goes for South Beauregard and Vinton. The momentum shifted in the last game of the year against Oakdale.
“It seemed like that game proved we could play,” said Kellogg. “We ended the season on a great note.” Last year the Tigers ended the season with a 6-3 record. “We were eleven points away from being undefeated,” he said. “Rosepine kicked a field goal with 13 seconds left to beat us 9-7 and South Beauregard beat us by four points. Carter is 5’11” 165lbs and was an all district player last year as a defensive back. He will return to the secondary and give DeQuincy leadership there. Joining him on the D-line is junior Aric Allain. Allain is 6’4” 189lbs and was the leading tackler for the Tigers last season. Other returning starters for the defense are seniors James Cancienne, Mitchell Marshall, and Randall Carter. Cancienne is 5’8” 180lbs and is a three year starter on the defensive line. Marshall is 5’7”185lbs and will play at one of the linebacker spots. Carter is 5’7” 160lbs and brings additional senior leadership to the secondary. Offensively, the Tigers run a multiple I set and have eight starters returning. C.J. Carter will pull double duty and be in the backfield at running back. Carter was the offensive All District MVP and had All
District honors as running back and as a kick return player. Jacob Dietz was also an All District selection last year and will return to his position at quarterback. Jacob will have the opportunity to throw to his brother Patrick this season. Patrick Dietz will start as tight end for both the offense and the defense. Dietz is 6’2” 210 lbs and will be a sophomore to watch this season. Layton Braneff and Tyler Johnson are other notables for the offense. Braneff is 5’10” 165lbs, a senior and has 4.5 second speed. Tyler Johnson is a 6’3” 275lb sophomore that will start at one of the tackle positions for the offense. He will also be a sophomore to watch this fall. “I think that our kids have learned how to win. Does it mean we are going to win anymore games? I don’t know because the teams that we are playing against are so good, but my kids are still going to play hard.”

East Beauregard Trojans Head coach Robert Jackson has 18 years experience coaching, the past three as the head coach for the East Beauregard Trojans. The team has struggled over the last few seasons and their numbers have been down.
This past spring the team did well according to Jackson. “We’re working hard and the kids seem to have a lot more dedication this year,” he said. Offensively, the team will run the split back veer this fall, the same as last season, with some experience returning to the offense. The Trojans will have a couple of players suiting up that will try to help them create a passing game. Junior Justin Rutherford started
at quarterback late in the season last year and will be taking snaps and leading the team offensively. “He is getting more and more accurate every time we go out and throw. He is figuring out where those guys are going to be, throwing the ball on their cuts instead of waiting for them to make their cuts,” said Jackson. Senior Dillon Hunt will be at the tight end position and Jackson commented on Hunt and said
“He is big, tall, has good hands and good feet. We will try and utilize him as much as we can in our offense and he will be one our favorite targets when we do throw the ball. He’s got such long arms; if you can just get it close to him he will catch it.” He added “We are going to try and take advantage of his height.” Senior Corey Townsley will be at the running back position. He was moved from quarterback to

allow him the opportunity to run the ball more this season. Townsley will have the opportunity to help in the passing game and Jackson will try to get him the ball in space. He feels that Townsley gives them opportunities for positive yards if that happens. Seth Shirley will join Townsley at the other running back position. Shirley played in the secondary last year and will likely pull double duty this season. Senior Mikey Cox and Junior Jacob Kittrell will return as starters to the offensive line. The two of them will bring experience and leadership to the offense. Defensively, the Trojans have changed from a 5-3 set to the 4-2-5. Jackson stated, “I think we are
going to adjust pretty well to it. We just have to find some linebackers.” He feels this defense will better fit the personnel that he has and said “In the past we always had three good linebackers and right now we are kind of struggling with that position. Trying to find two is easier than finding three,” Jackson said. Jackson spoke of one concern for the season. “Depth is a concern for us. Depth is something that has plagued us for four or five years now.” He finished by saying “I don’t know how many games we are going to win, but we are going to be in a lot more of them than we’ve been in the past several years.”

Kinder Yellowjackets Kinder’s 2008 record was a disappointing 1-7. Head coach Jeff Wainwright said that he felt like the team played well at the end of the season, something that continued into the spring.
They plan on turning things around this fall. “This season is going to be a new season and we think we’ve got things going in the right direction,” Wainwright said. “It’s just a matter of time before we get the wins under our belt and get some confidence going.” He is very excited about the group he has this year. “We have a great group of kids. If it wouldn’t be for bills, they are the type of kids that you would coach for free
because they enjoy being out here and they make coaching fun. We are looking forward to the next couple of years with these guys,” said Wainwright. Kinder runs a one back multiple spread offense and the Yellow Jackets will have some players to exploit it. Key players in skill positions are sophomore quarterback Blake Trahan, junior receiver Kade van Norman, junior tailback KeAndrea Hardison and senior
slot receiver Rodney Prosper. The offensive line will be anchored by senior guard Dylan Nolen. Wainwright said of Nolen, “He has been a real solid player for us the last couple of years. We are hoping for big things out of him.” Defensively, the Yellow Jackets run the fifty and they have more than a couple of young players returning that will have an impact. last season as a freshman and was the leading tackler for the team. He will be starting at linebacker again this fall. “Langley’s got the heart of a lion; he’s one of those guys when he straps it up on Friday night or Monday’s practice he’s there to play physical football,” Wainwright said. Senior Rodney Prosper was voted all district as a defensive athlete. He will return to the defense as a starter at free safety. Prosper is a solid player and is being recruited. “Rodney is the hardest worker day in and day out and leads by example,” said Wainwright. Other notables for the Yellow Jackets are Michael May and Derek Jones. Both made all district at the
defensive end positions and they will also return to the defense this fall. Kinder is looking for that first win early, something Wainwright believes will help get the team going and ready for district. He says that the only thing lacking is confidence. “With a couple of wins we should be fine,” said Wainwright. “Until these guys learn how to win and win a close game here and there, we are going to struggle. I know they are going to have the right attitude during those difficult times to pull out a close one and win. That’s something only the guys on the field can do. In the huddle, they have to see eye to eye and believe in each other.

Lake Arthur Tigers The Tigers of Lake Arthur have a large senior class this year, one of the positives of the program for head coach Chad Lavergne. “The big story with us
this year is not necessarily one or two players, it is our big senior class,” Lavergne said. The seniors started with 20 players in their group back in the seventh grade. Lavergne has worked with this group from junior high till now and there are 18 of them still playing this year. “Most of those eighteen have had varsity playing experience since their sophomore year. On paper this could be one of my best teams.”
In 2008, the Tigers were 5-5, with three of the losses coming at the end of the fourth quarter. “We lost one in overtime; one by one point, and one by three points on the last play of the game.” Those losses were to Westminster, South Cameron, and Pickering respectively. The Tigers were district runnerup and played for the district championship in week ten against Welsh. Lavergne has a good outlook for
this season. “Our goal here each and every year is to win a playoff game,” Lavergne said. His plans are to get into the playoffs and win. That would be significant since the Tigers have only two playoff wins in the schools history. Both of those wins came in the same year. The team returns 13 starters, nine of which had all district honors last season. The offense will miss their

leading rusher from last year with the departure of Jamal Jones. However, the Tigers will have returning starter Auldon Robinson filling Jones shoes. Robinson was a first team all district player for the Tigers last season. The offense will also benefit from the experience of returning starting quarterback Coby Lavergne. The heart of the offensive line will be returning linemen senior guard Brent RaMour, junior guard Conrad Hengens, and junior center Kade Trahan. The three linemen were all district players last season and will be tough in the middle. The Lake Arthur offense will remain the same as last season, the split back veer. However, the defense will see a change from last season as the Tigers will implement the 4-2-5.
The team operated out of the 50 and ran some 4-3 in 2008. “We have ton of strong safety type players, but we don’t have a lot of big defensive lineman. They’re not loaded with speed, but they will still be ‘quick enough’ (to compete),” Lavergne said. The defense will field six returning starters, four of which were all district players last year. Five of the six are seniors and the other new starters will have senior Miki Poole and junior DeAngelo Thompson anchoring the ends on the defensive line. Thompson is 6’4” and 303 pounds and will be someone to watch this season. “If I have to summarize it, the nucleus of our strength will come from the eighteen seniors who have playing experience, can play well together, have good chemistry going and give us depth.”

Pickering Red Devils The Pickering Red Devils have limited numbers when it comes to players. It’s something that head coach James Marcantel has to deal with, but does
so with extreme optimism. The Red Devils will put twentythree players on the sidelines this fall. “The kids are very coachable, they work hard and they are a pleasure to be around,” Marcantel said. “They are not a problem, they do anything you ask and will give you a hundred percent.” Marcantel has nine years as head coach of the Pickering program and a total of thirty-three years coaching experience. This year Marcantel
says he is looking at things a little different, something beyond x’s and o’s. Last season on October 10th one of his players Jan Veintidos (#22) suffered a spinal cord injury during a game. The next five weeks were touch and go for Veintidos, but this past spring he was released and returned to school walking and talking. He is doing well and while he will not play ball, Veintidos has
become an inspiration to his team and community. Veintidos was a starter on both sides of the ball and Marcantel said that his play on the field will be missed. The team lost another talented player to graduation last season. Paul Marcantel was District MVP and an All State player. He was one of the team’s leading rushers and led the team defensively in tackles. The split back veer is the offense of choice for the Red Devils and they

have players coming back with experience to run it. Gett Thomas will take the snaps from center this fall at quarterback. Marcantel commented, “He’s a real gutsy kid, he’s not big, but he is very intelligent, and he’s coachable,” he said. “He will not hurt us. By that I mean he’s not going to make mistakes to put us in a bind.” The offensive line will have four starters returning this fall. Senior CJ Geans will return at center and he will be joined by junior Matthew Walker at one of the tackles. Also, coming back will be sophomores Zack Wardlow as a guard and Charles Sanders, who can play several positions. The defense Pickering runs is the 4-2-5 and because of the low number of players, and several will pull double duty. The O-line will go to the line on defense with the exception of Wardlow who will play
linebacker. Marcantel has concerns and depth is one of them. He points out that one injury most likely knocks out two positions. Putting everything into perspective, Marcantel said, “These kids work hard and try to the best of their ability. Sometimes we can’t measure the success of a season by wins and losses. Sometimes we measure by how much these kids grow and mature into young men.” “The goal is to finish the season with all the kids healthy and intact. If they learn a work ethic, something they can use past football,” Marcantel said. “If they will learn nothing is free and you have to get up and strap on your boots everyday and go to work. We are going to be better when we finish than when we started.”

Rosepine Eagles Rosepine had their best season ever last year, ending with eight wins. That put them in the postseason and they hosted the first playoff game in the
history of the school. Two records in one year isn’t bad, but Head Coach Johnny Cryer is not standing still. He will start his thirteenth year with Rosepine and believes this fall may be a good one as well. “If we can get our offensive line going I think we will be okay. We’ve always had kids 6’3”-6’4” and 280 -310 lbs up front. This year it’s going to be different, we’ll be anywhere from 195-220lbs on the
offensive line so we’re going to be small.” They have two starters back on the offensive line. Senior all district player John Holiday will be at center as a three year starter. Joining him will be senior Allen Higginbotham at one of the guard spots. Higginbotham was also an all district player. The skill positions have players returning. Cryer stated “My quarterback rushed for a thousand
yards last year and threw for seven hundred. My fullback ran for right at six-hundred and my tailback ran for seventeen hundred. So you’re talking about a lot of yards coming back from last year. The thing is all three of them are juniors.” The Eagles will stay with the same offensive set as last year, which was a multiple spread. Rosepine’s defense is the 4-2-5, but they will run the 4-3 depending on the situation. “Our strength is

We are quicker and have seven starters returning.” Senior Travis Moses will return at defensive end and was the leading tackler for the team last year. Junior Grant Gill will return at linebacker and was also one of the tackle leaders last fall. Junior Brandon Russell is 6’2” 185lbs and will be back in the secondary as the free safety. According to Cryer, Russell is a solid player. “He’s a quarterback in the secondary, and like having a coach on the field,” he said. The program has experienced positive growth and this season they will dress out at least sixty players. The numbers have allowed Rosepine the luxury of
putting twenty-two players on the field this season, with no players going both ways. “Our biggest obstacle that we’ve got to overcome is our first five games,” Cryer said. “These kids have never experienced playing people like Jennings, Rayne, and Mansfield.” “We feel like if we can come out healthy those first five games with three or four wins, we’re going to be a real good football team,” he said. Cryer stated that the key for Rosepine to win district is in the offense. “Our offensive line has got to come around. When we hit week six, hopefully our line is playing well. We feel like if this happens, we’re going to be a team to reckon with.”

South Beauregard Knights First year Head Coach Shawn Demeritt lead South Beau and won their first ever district title last fall, with the Knights compiling an 8-3 record.
Their season ended in the first round of the playoffs with the team suffering a loss to University Lab. The entire offensive backfield will return, as well as the defensive secondary and two linebackers on defense. Demeritt feels good about the team this fall and is looking to once again make the playoffs. “We’ve got a good nucleus coming back and can’t complain, said Demeritt.” “We changed it up a little bit obviously with our
personnel; we’ve done a few things different. We have gone to more of a shotgun package. We’ll have a lot more two tight end and one back sets in the gun and under center.” Rickey Ivey will again be at quarterback for the offense and the Knights will run three wide sets out of the shotgun formation. South Beau has two running backs returning and both are over 200 pounds. They are All District player
Dakota Cryer and three year starter at fullback junior Dillon Fowler. With the offense set, look for a well balanced attack from South Beauregard. “Big” Ivan Robinson will return as one of the defensive leaders for the Knights. Robinson was second team all district last season. Demeritt talked about Robinson and said “he is a big time player.” The word “big” does not do this young man justice. The senior defensive tackle is 6’4”

and 260 pounds, and is not slow. He runs 4.78 in the forty yard dash and is on the first leg of the 4x100 for the track team. He is also the starting center for the schools basketball program. Also returning to the defense will be safety Rickey Ivey. Ivey will start his third year in the secondary pulling double duty, and is an All District player from last season. Another standout will be Kain Hungerford. The junior cornerback will keep offenses contained on the edges. Even with the personnel coming back to the defense, South Beau will continue to put a lot of players on the field. “We’re going to play 35-40 players a game” said Demeritt. They have sixty on the roster and will use as many as they can in each game. “We run a multiple 4-3 but we will also throw
in some 3-4 looks like we did in the spring” said Demeritt. He felt that the 3-4 worked well and was very pleased with what he saw. The Knights will be mixing up their defensive schemes this fall and they do have the personnel to make things happen. “The best thing about my team is the experience coming back” said Demeritt. He added “my biggest concern is replacing my two defensive ends that started for us three years and replacing the linebacker position vacated by Joey Nixon.” Demeritt has set goals for the team that he believes can be reached. South Beauregard has never won the district title outright. Last season, they split the title and to be able to win it outright is obviously one of those goals. The teams in their district will make that a challenge.

Vinton Lions This past spring the Vinton Lions had 32 players report for training. “That is about normal,” said Head coach Wendell LeJeune”. “Forty-four is usually a good number for us and we will get 10-12 freshmen this fall.
“The biggest thing is we are really bottom heavy and more than half of them are sophomores. Last season we lost 10 seniors and they all played both ways,” LeJeune said. He added, “We are happy with the kids we have, it’s just that due to work, vacations, school and stuff like that we haven’t had the summer workouts we’ve wanted to have.” The Lions had a good spring and did well in the scrimmage
against the Sulphur JV according to LeJeune. “We thought our strength was going to be our offensive line, because most of them are back. But we lost two starters there, one to injury and one did not return,” he said. The entire backfield from last season was also lost. “Right now we are thinking our passing game is what is going to have to carry us,” said LeJeune. “We have junior Joe Prince who played, believe it or not,
some defensive line for us last year. He is 6’2” 190lbs and he is a tough kid who works hard and has a big arm.” Prince will be the quarterback this fall and, according to LeJeune, he has really improved over last season. He talked a little more about Prince from this past spring, saying, “He is throwing passes right now he shouldn’t be able to throw, such as the long out routes, deep curls, fade routes on the sidelines in between cover two.”

left to right: Loren Rice, Bart Anderson, Wendell Lejeune ( head coach), Don Ritter, Jason Tharp, and Bart Williams.
LeJeune continued, “This is stuff that usually takes a player a couple of years just to get the concept of, because they are tough routes. The second day he was throwing them. I’m going to have to rethink this. We just might have to throw a little more this year.” With this talent, the offense for Vinton will change some and become more balanced. They look to run more of a double slot type offense with motion. “We know we are not going to be able to pound it in there, so we will run sweeps and attack the defensive ends on out. We will mix it up by running quick traps inside just to keep people honest,” LeJeune said. “We will more than likely throw the quick passing game like we did when Phil was here years ago.”
Vinton had a rough season last year and ended with a 2-6 record. “We played well against our people, it’s just our record doesn’t show it,” said LeJeune. The defense has five starters returning, and will stay in the 4-2-5 this season. There will be three linemen and two returning in the secondary, so there will be some gaps to fill. “Really and truly our linebackers are the ones we are worried about,” said LeJeune. He has some concerns about his defense and will make adjustments as needed. LeJeune closed by saying, “The potential is there, but we are young and untested, if we work real hard and mature quickly we will be okay.”

Welsh Greyhounds The Welsh Greyhounds are looking forward to this fall. They have many
positives going for them this year, one of which is having seventy three athletes in the program. That is a good number because it prevents players from having to play both ways. That is just one of the things third year Head Coach Robbie Gates is happy about this fall. “We are looking for big results
this year,” Gates said. “We made the playoffs our first two years and we won the district last year, so we just want to keep improving on that.” The Greyhounds will run a multiple offense and they have a number of backs they will use this season. Two seniors, Dylan Hebert and Will Guidry, along with sophomores
David Caraway and Nick Hebert, will be in the backfield. Both Guidry and Hebert were all district players last season and will bring experience to the backfield. The quarterback for Welsh will be 6’0” 180 pound junior Payton Fox. “He did a good job for us last season on the junior varsity team and as

backup for the varsity,” said Gates. “He’s a big tough kid and does a good job of managing the game.” Senior Matthew Daniel was an all district player last fall and will return at right tackle on the offensive line. Juniors Lucas Trahan and Christian Coleman are the only other two returning lineman on offense for the Greyhounds. They will run the 4-3 on defense this year, and will field five returning starters. The d-line will have Senior Cody Fruge. Behind him at a couple of the linebacker spots is senior Jordan Hebert and junior Seth Luntsford. The secondary is shaping up well with senior corner Dustin Wilridge and senior safety Casey Trahan. Hebert is a three year starter. “He was our leading tackler last year and he is like the quarterback for our defense,” Gates said. “He does a lot of good things.” In addition to these players, three more seniors will start on defense. They are Andrew Johnson, Justin
Morvant, and Christian Broussard. Johnson will start at linebacker with Morvant at one of the corners and Broussard at the other safety. Gates likes what he sees on defense, especially the experience. “Last year was the first year to run the 4-3 and it was new to them,” he said. “Now that we have a little time playing it, I think we will be a little bit better this year. We are pretty aggressive and we fly to the football. We just want to feed off of a little bit of last year’s success.” He noted that district 5-2A is good from top to bottom. “We are in a 7 team district and all of them are tough. There is not going to be an easy one out there,” he said. “We have to be consistent every week. We know we are going to be in a dogfight every Friday night in the district,” Gates said. “So we have to take them one at a time and not have any letdowns.”

Basile Bearcats Head Coach Tony Bertrand is a native of Basile, which gives reason as to why he likes coaching the Bearcats so much.
He’s been coaching as a profession for sixteen years, coming home to coach straight out of college. He has been at the helm of the Bearcats for the past four years. Last season the Bearcats started 0-4. The team struggled early with the entire backfield injured for the first four games. “I have never had that many people get hurt all at the same
time, and it lasted two to three weeks,” said Bertrand. They were able to turn it around and won their last five games to win district. The turnaround put the team in the postseason and they were picked to play West St. Johns. The Bearcats lost to them in the first round to end their season with a record of 5-5. This season the Bearcats are looking
to start a little better. They will have some returning starters from last year to help them do just that. This past spring things went well according to Bertrand. “The first thing I look at is numbers, how many kids I think can play. We had about forty five which is good for class A, but I think depth is still an issue.” “I was pleased with the spring and

I did some moving around. Some players played in some different positions,” Bertrand said. Junior Matt Pruitt has been moved from wide receiver to quarterback this year. “He has very good mechanics and throws the ball extremely well,” said Bertrand. I feel coming out of the spring, very good about what he has done. He had a good spring and a good spring game.” Senior Fabian Bellard was all district last season. He will be moved from quarterback to the tailback position. Bertrand said of the four-year starter, “He can play anywhere. He has played quarterback, tail back, wide receiver, free safety and corner back.” Stephen Lebleu made all district on both sides of the ball as a tight end and will return this fall. The offensive line will be in good shape with four of six linemen coming back. Defensively, Basile will run the 4-2-5 and they have positions open from graduation. There are five players
returning from last season to start for the Bearcats. They are Nick Bertrand at linebacker, Fred Lewis and Stephen Lebleu at defensive ends, with Fabian Bellard and Drake LeDoux in the secondary. Depth is the biggest worry for Basile. They have a lot of freshmen and sophomores, a good junior group and a small senior class this season. “Depth is a killer,” he said. “We are not deep at all. It could be a little worse this year than last. If we have any type of bad luck when it comes to injuries, it will be hard to get through.” Regardless of the teams youth and lack of depth, Bertrand likes what he sees. “I think if we stay healthy and come out of the non district schedule in one piece I think we will be in the mix when it comes down to it.” Bertrand says that the Bearcats have been working hard in the off season and are looking forward to this fall with enthusiasm. “I’ve just got a wonderful bunch of kids to coach right now.”

Elton Indians Elton had a rough season last year finishing 0-8, something that the Indians are traditionally not accustomed to. Head Coach Carl Flanagan said, “anytime you take
over a program it takes a while to know each other.” The Indians definitely went through growing pains and last fall, putting some young players on the field. “There were times when we had as many as seven freshmen on the field at one time during games,” Flanagan said. This season the Indians will have those same players returning
and the experience will help them in their quest for a better season. The offense that Elton runs is a multiple I, and seven players this fall are returning starters who are familiar with the scheme. Phillip Durio will be a junior this year and returns as a two year starter at center for Elton. Patrick Jacob will join Durio on the line at right tackle and is considered a
sophomore to watch this season. Junior Alvin Richardson is 5’ll” 170lbs and will be the Indians go to receiver this season. He will be joined on the offense by junior running back Landon Carmon. Last year, Carmon was voted all district and all southwest Louisiana at his position. Flanagan likes what he sees in Carmon. “He runs well with pads

Flanagan notes that the backfield will be solid this year and the line will be much improved. “I like the big backfield because of our philosophy and the things we do.” He added, “I thought the offensive line had a good spring and did a good job blocking.” Junior free safety Tyler Dawsey will be one of six returning starters this fall for Elton’s defense. Patrick Jacob will go both ways and help on the defensive line. Sophomore Cory Monceaux was an all district player at linebacker last year and is another experienced returnee. According to Flanagan, the defense will change
this year from the 4-3 to the 4-2-5. “In our league we need to stop the run. We’ll try to force the issue and make them throw a little bit. I think with eight in the box it will give you a little better chance of that.” He is quite confident that Elton will be better this season. “I think we need to get better at being more physical and better at tackling on defense. We haven’t arrived at that point yet,” said Flanagan, who is a second year coach. “I think to be contending, that’s the key. We are going to have to tackle better and get more physical on that side of the ball. If that happens I think we will be competitive.” “Because of the number of kids that played last fall and the fact they are a year older I think we should be competitive,” Flanagan said. “As long

Hamilton Christian Warriors The Hamilton Christian Warriors will not have a lot of starters returning this season. They will not have a large class of seniors this fall
either. That is just a couple of challenges for head coach Mike Maggio and his ‘09 team. The Warriors only have four seniors, fielding a majority of underclassman. Maggio doesn’t see these as negatives, just facts. He is still as excited this year as any other to get started. “We have been together with these kids since kindergarten, so we’re all on the same page. There are not going to be any surprises, they
know what is expected.” Hamilton Christian runs a multiple offense in which the team will show the split back veer as well as the flex and spread schemes. One of the returning starters for the offense is junior Josh Van Norman. The offensive tackle is 6’6” 315lbs and will anchor the offensive line for the Warriors. Because of his play, Van Norman has drawn interest and is being
recruited. The other returning starter is all district senior receiver Ashton Boyd. Boyd is 6’0” 185lbs and has good hands and speed. He will bring experience to the receivers on offense. Defensively, the Warriors will run the 4-3 and there are two starters coming back this fall. David Floyd will return for his senior season on the defensive line. Floyd is 6’2” 250lbs and is a

offensive and defensive lines will be okay. They will have varsity experience and that is a plus. Oct. 2, 2009 Maggio thinks that coming together as a team at VINTON is an important part to success. “It’s all about team chemistry, the camaraderie, the gelling and Oct. 9, 2009 becoming a team,” he said, “Not worrying about at BASILE* what’s in it for me, but asking what can I do to help?” Maggio says “It’s magical when you get a bunch Oct. 16, 2009 of men that really do care for one another. Merryville Panthers The Merryville Panthers were 2-8 in the win loss column last year. They’ve gone through a succession of head coaches over the past several
years. But Head Coach Mark Delaney will break that mold as he returns for a second season. He is already making adjustments for the coming season. “During the spring I concentrated on fundamentals, blocking, tackling, taking on a hit, and getting off a hit and stuff like that.” He said that he was pleased with his team’s performance this past spring, saying they knew the
plays from the fall. “One day we had a rainout, so we went in the gym and I said we are going to run some offense,” Delaney said. “I started calling the plays and my first two teams started running them. I was really impressed with that.” Another thing the Panthers have worked on in the off season is conditioning. “Third quarter got us most of the ball games,” said Delaney. “We lost the battles
on the front line, and tackling hurt us last year, especially in the third quarter.” Delaney is intent on correcting the problem. “I’m really putting the emphasis on getting into shape early. We’ve hit the weight room hard during the off season.” The Panthers will run the Wing T offensively. “We run the trap very effectively with my fullback. I have some real good lineman, they are not big but they can trap

people. All we need is somebody to hesitate and they got a trap and the fullback is good enough to read it and break it.” Delaney is concerned with the tight end position. Running the wing T requires a blocking style tight end, and that has yet to materialize. They will also run the spread and some shotgun formations giving the offense different looks. Austin Moore will start at quarterback for the Panthers this fall. The sophomore is 5’10” 165 lbs. Senior Corey Carlson is 5’9”220 lbs and will be in the backfield at fullback. Defensively, the team will be in the 4-2-5. Delaney is very comfortable with the defensive scheme. “I’ve run defense for fourteen years, it kind of comes natural to me and I have been running
the same defense for fourteen years,” he said. Delaney is very comfortable with this defensive scheme. “I know that I can make changes quickly,” he said. “If something goes wrong I can fix it.” The one concern he has at this point is tackling. “If you don’t run your feet through a tackle you are not going to tackle. We did a lot of arm tackling last year,” Delaney said. The team has been working in the off season with strength training to help them do a better job in that area. “I think we can handle our own. We want to be better than we were last year. We want to be in the ball game going into the fourth quarter,” Delaney said. “As a coach that is all you can wish for, to have a chance to win at the end.”

Oberlin Tigers Tigers Head Coach Pat Miller starts his 2nd season in Oberlin, and by the looks of it, has some good things going for him.
The team only graduated 5 seniors and has several starters returning. The Tigers were 4-6 last season and ten points separated them from winning the district according to Miller. Look for things to be a little better this season. The offense lost three linemen and quarterback Matt Karam. Karam was a three year starter and Miller said they are looking for a quarterback. “We are working two seniors,
Jacob Ware that played fullback and linebacker for me last year. He is more of a defensive type player, but he is also a very good athlete and we think he can get the job done. He is big, strong and can throw the football.” However, Miller is a little worried about his durability and is working another player at quarterback. “Spencer Sonnier played defensive back for us last year
and a little bit at running back. He has some skills as well, and if we have to, we will go with a two quarterback system,” Miller said. “I’ve got all the confidence in the world in those two guys.” Miller is a bit concerned with the youth on his offensive line. “We are just going to have to stay on blocks more. Our line is going to be young, that is going to be a big key for us. If our offensive line can mature and hold some blocks,

I think we will be okay.” Out of the seven starters returning on offense, six have all district honors. They are seniors Mckinley Storer, Cody Dubroc, Jonathan Thomas, HD Martin, Chad Strother and junior Cedric Skinner. Dubroc is 6’0” 310lbs, a four year starter at center and is drawing interest from recruiters. The defense will again be the 4-2-5 with nine returning starters. Again, the Tigers have some of the same all district talent playing on defense. They will have experience on the field this fall with nine seniors and two juniors. Senior Jacob Ware will return at linebacker. He was the leading tackler for the Tigers last season. “He’s our leader on defense and obviously he’s going to be our leader on offense too,” said Miller.
“We really didn’t play that bad last year defensively” Miller said. Last year the defense allowed 1443 yards rushing and 903 yards passing. “That’s not real bad rushing, the passing stats is what we have to bring down. People hurt aus throwing the football last year. We definitely have to fix that.” The defense was a pleasant surprise for Miller this spring, “I was really impressed with our defense in the spring game.” One good thing that will be in Oberlin’s favor this year are three teams he lost to last year. Basile, South Cameron, and Hamilton Christian will be played at home. “Those teams are tough,” Miller said, “I’d much rather play them at home. When it comes down to it, we just have to do what we do best and that is run the football.”

South Cameron Tarpons Persistence is one word that describes South Cameron and their football program. The facilities have for the most part been destroyed twice by
hurricanes. With two in such a short span of time it is a wonder they have been able to maintain the program. Head coach Parry Lalande says “It’s hard and not easy to go to work everyday, mentally it’s tough.” There are still some things that need fixing and have made things difficult. “We have only been able to have one offseason program since Rita,” he said. Adding insult to injury the
South Cameron Tarpons will enter this fall without one of their coaches. Coach Derek Noel was injured in an accident earlier in the year and fell into a coma. It is unclear if and when he will be able to return. Noel is 26 years old and was the defensive coordinator for the Tarpons. He would have been in his third year with the Tarpons this fall and LaLande said it will be difficult without him, both on and
off the field. The Tarpons ended last season with a record of 7-3. This past spring the team had 35 to 40 players come out for the team. When you look at all the program has had to overcome for the past four years, that isn’t bad Lalande commented. He is feeling positive and upbeat and is looking forward to this fall. Lalande has been coaching for 32 years with 28 of them as head

coach of the South Cameron Tarpons. He has had 5 undefeated seasons and would like to pull out another one this season. “Yes, those years are fun,” Lalande said. “I mean, nobody likes to lose. I am going into the season like I do every season...to win.” LaLande favors formations on offense. “I run the wing T, Power I, Pro, twin, and one back sets. Here’s my philosophy, I like a lot of formations and run the same plays. We create different looks so they (the defense) have to adjust, then I try to attack where they adjust.” Dex Murphy will return this season and once again pull double duty. Offensively, Murphy will be in the backfield at the tailback position. On defense, he will be in the secondary as one of the safeties. Murphy received All State honors last year for his
defensive play. Another returnee to defense is senior Hunter Kanik. Kanik played linebacker and was an all district player last year. The returning senior is 5’9” 150 lbs and was the leading tackler for the Tarpons last fall. The defense last season was the 4-2-5 and that may change. With the loss of Noel, the Tarpons are a little more comfortable running out of the “fifty.” “I know the fifty,” Lalande said. “I ran the fifty for thirty years and this year the fifty will better fit our personnel.” Lalande says the best thing about his team is perseverance. “They (the team) have struggled through two hurricanes,” he said. “They have been through losing everything twice.”

Give me a “D” for Dangerous! Cheerleading Riskiest of All Young Women’s Sports During fall football season, most parents and coaches focus on the safety of the players on the field. But there is growing evidence they should be paying closer attention to the jumping, tumbling, and flipping athletes on the sidelines as well. The days when cheerleaders stood around just clapping and shouting are long gone. Cheerleading today is a very demanding sport that can lead to the same types of injuries as any other strenuous athletic activity,” says Geoffrey Collins, MD, sports medicine specialist and orthopaedic surgeon with Center for Orthopaedics. Researchers have felt for years that cheerleading was more dangerous than
64
August 28, 2009
the public perceived, but records were poorly kept until recently. Several reports released this year underscore the high incidence of injuries. The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, which tracks sports safety nationwide, found that cheerleading accounted for two-thirds of all catastrophic injuries among female high school and college athletes. This translates to a rate of 2.68 catastrophic injuries for every 100,000 female high school cheerleaders, which exceeds the rate for many other high school sports. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that the number of emergency room visits to treat cheerleading injuries of any kind jumped from nearly 5000 in 1980 to over 26,000 in recent years. The medical journal Pediatrics also posted similar concerns about cheerleading injuries in January. In general, most cheerleading injuries are minor strains, sprains and bruises, according to Dr. Collins. “However, these new studies show that both the total number of injuries and the frequency of severe injuries are much higher than we’d like to see for any sport.” Some experts feel the increase in cheerleading-related injuries can be attributed to the sheer increase in the number of young women engaged in the sport. Others feel the rise in serious injuries appears related to the increasing difficulty of the acrobatic routines cheerleaders perform and the increasingly competitive nature of the sport. Dr. Collins agrees that these factors do play a role. “Cheer teams aren’t just cheering on their school teams, they are training for competition against other squads on a regional and national level,” says Dr. Collins. “And in addition to school teams, dance studios and cheer academies have students involved and competing in the sport as well.” Now that measures are in place to monitor injuries, there is a new emphasis on safety for the sport. “Whether you’re a cheerleader, coach or parent, your main objective should be to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” says Dr. Collins. “Knowing why the majority of injuries occur will help you better understand how to prevent them.” He says most cheerleading injuries occur for some very easy-to-identify reasons: lack of conditioning, risk-taking choices, inadequate spotting, improper or unsafe equipment, and practicing or performing on non-cushioned surfaces. Dr. Collins adds that parents of cheerleaders can play a big role in helping prevent severe injuries by checking out the qualifications of those working with their children. “Don’t be afraid to ask about their experience, the safety measures they use, what types of stunts will be performed, who will be supervising every practice and their plan for handling any injuries that occur.” Just like any other sport, cheerleading brings with it some unavoidable risks, and no amount of prevention can eliminate the chance of injury, but Dr. Collins stresses that with the proper information and knowledge, the severity and frequency of injuries can be greatly reduced.

Athletes Can Improve Their Game Athletic injuries sideline players every day. Whether it’s school athletics, recreational sports or professional players, sitting out isn’t part of the thrill of the game. The use of chiropractic in sports medicine is beneficial to keeping players doing what they do best: playing. Among the specialties in health care, chiropractic is one of the few that relates well to athletics. Most sports involve quick movements, body contact and unusual positioning; moves that place a heavy strain on the body’s musculoskeletal system. A chiropractor’s approach to health and wellness is centered around the viewpoint that the body is an integrated being and that the spine’s health is central to the rest of the body’s health. Many athletes, famous and yet-to-be-discovered, rely on chiropractic to keep them in the game. Well-known ones include Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Joe Montana and Evander Holyfield. Some athletes get an adjustment prior to a game to enhance their range of motion. Chiropractic Economics reports that over 95 percent of NFL teams frequently use chiropractors. In fact, the Players Association of the NFL has officially incorporated sports chiropractors as a regular part of care. Chiropractors have been selected as attending doctors at the Olympic Games and at national and world championships in track and field, cycling, volleyball, power lifting and triathlons. The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation reported that chiropractic care can increase athletic performance by as much as 16.7 percent. “Chiropractic is geared towards restoring normal function to the spine and other components of the musculoskeletal system,” explained Donald Thigpen, DC, with the Chiropractic Center. “If problems occur due to spinal misalignments or dysfunction, or if an athlete experiences sprains, strains or extremity joint dysfunctions, we can administer joint manipulation along with other physiotherapies and exercises to help the athlete recovery from his or her injuries.” Weekend athletes and younger players can benefit from chiropractic, too. Chiropractic physicians can work with developing athletes on body
mechanics and ways to prevent injuries. In fact, because a chiropractor’s education focuses on biomechanical and neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, they are well prepared to work with other doctors and therapists on dealing with athletic injuries. “Many chiropractic physicians work as part of the health care team for athletes; we can work along with physical therapists or medical doctors on certain types of injuries. Chiropractic is heavily involved in sports medicine all over the world,” said Dr. Thigpen. Athletes get several benefits with chiropractic: injury management and prevention as well as enhancement of physical performance. The role of nutrition is widely viewed as a key component for optimum athletic performance. Nutritionists often work with athletes on the appropriate number of calories, the right combinations of foods, as well as vitamins and minerals to enhance performance. Along those same lines, chiropractic also approaches sports medicine from a holistic angle. Athletes are looking for healthy ways to enhance performance, speed, injury rehabilitation and increase endurance. Chiropractic can ensure the body is at its best for performance in a game or competition. Strength and conditioning is a major part of any good athlete’s playbook. Coaches and sports medicine experts are looking to the field of chiropractic for input on tailoring conditioning programs because of their knowledge in biomechanics. “We work well with other athletic health experts, and together, we can design a customized program for an athlete as well as a good, well-rounded program for a whole team,” Dr. Thigpen said. “It’s not just limited to team sports. I work with many patients who are interested in fitness. They may enjoy jogging regularly, or have steady tennis matches lined up, and I’ll assist them in making sure their body is up to the challenge and they understand how to avoid injuries.” Chiropractic medicine is one more way athletes can excel in their game. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call Dr. Thigpen at (337) 562-0817.
