he 22-year-old man accused of murdering Chozyn Koroheke entered no plea when he appeared in the High Court at Auckland yesterday. Justice Edwin Wylie remanded the man in custody and set the case down for a further appearance on May 3. No lawyer was assigned to the accused. The new date was set to allow him to get a lawyer. The court was almost empty except for media. A woman also appeared in court and

was granted remand on bail with interim name suppression. Chozyn Koroheke, 22, was fatally shot at close range at her Pakuranga home on April 4. She was the mother of two young children, aged 4 and 6. The accused, who has interim name suppression, turned himself in to police on Sunday evening and was charged with murder. He is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. A 47-year-old man and a 24-yearold woman have also been charged as accessories after the fact of murder.

Arrests follow dairy robbery Two men - aged 26 and 43 – and a 35-year-old female have appeared in court following the aggravated robbery of Big Johns Dairy in Pakuranga around 3pm on Saturday. Police were called by a member of the public who saw people run from the dairy and get into a waiting vehicle. Detective Sergeant Nathan Reid said police saw the vehicle on Te Irirangi Drive and activated their red and blue lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. “The vehicle was pursued through East Tamaki and Otara where it eventually stopped on Israel Avenue,” he said. “A foot chase was initiated after persons were seen fleeing the vehicle. The three occupants from the vehicle were taken

into custody.” The owner of the dairy suffered facial injuries during the robbery where cigarettes were taken. He was taken to Middlemore Hospital for treatment. The three accused were formally charged and held in custody. They appeared in the Manukau District Court on Monday. The 43-year-old and 26-year-old were remanded in custody and the 35-year-old was remanded on bail. They are due to reappear on April 21 and May 8. The Times is attempting to find out whether the accused have entered pleas. The owner of Big Johns Dairy was taken to Middlemore Hospital for treatment after his popular dairy was robbed on Saturday.

In memory of a special man

Police across Auckland launched Operation Dukan yesterday which will talk with small business owners in the dairy and alcohol retail sector and provide them with prevention advice and support. Inspector Nga Wati Chaplow says Sergeant Gurpreet Photo supplied police are aware that the retail community has been shaken by recent robberies across Auckland and want to reassure them that their concerns are addressed. “We will have 15 officers working full-time for the next three weeks to engage dairy and liquor store owners. “We will provide them with a safety audit of their premises and discuss what options are available to them. This could include installing CCTV cameras, better lighting or even rearranging their stores,” says Mr Chaplow. The police will be utilising ethnic officers who speak either Hindi and/or Punjabi to ensure the message is well communicated to the owner, family and staff members. “The reason we are doing this is because we have found that members of our Indian community have been over-represented as victims in these types of offences,” he says. Operation Dukan was first run in Counties Manukau in 2009 and again in 2014 engaging with almost 300 business owners. “Those retailers who took part in the Counties Manukau operation said they found it to be extremely useful,” says Mr Chaplow.

A memorial service held for Koro Percy Reedy on April 13 brimmed with colleagues, family and friends gathered under one roof to exchange fond memories, laughter and tears. Mr Reedy, who worked as a kaumatua at Stand Children’s Services (formerly Pakuranga Health Camp) and was highly regarded by the local community, passed away on March 21 at the age of 75. He was remembered at the service for his ability to transcend cultures and ages and make the Regional Manager of people around him feel Stand Children’s Services truly valued. “He made himself well- Auckland, Pene Frost, speaking at the memorial known with his singing,” service for Koro Percy said former Stand Reedy. Times photo Wayne Martin kaumatua Uncle George Taipari, and commented on how the now-vacant role previously held by Mr Reedy will be a tricky one to fill. “When we met him, we thought, we need someone like him... he was such a unique man.” Regional Manager of Stand Children’s Services Auckland, Pene Frost, spoke at the service of Mr Reedy’s kind character and gift for putting people at ease. “He provided people with a sense of safety... and took his own brand of sunshine into resthomes. Through music and humour, Koro Percy encouraged people to relax.” She recalled Mr Reedy’s habit of asking slightly off-topic interview questions when hiring new staff, such as who was going to win the rugby and whether the candidate could sing, owned a boat, or liked fishing. Stand operations manager and nephew of Mr Reedy, Tauha Te Kani, was the MC for the service, and paid tribute to his uncle’s knack for pushing the boundaries with the power of his cheeky grin. “I struggle to think about Uncle Percy without laughing. “He was a man that in my experience would do things other people would never do and get away with it,” he joked. Members of Mr Reedy’s family, including his partner, daughter and son-in-law, also spoke at the service, paying tribute to the man they remembered as “helpful, kind and generous” with a caring heart and an unwavering passion for people. ➤ Stand Children’s Services would like to thank everyone for turning out on such a blustering day to stand together to honour and celebrate the life of a very special man. olflands residents were thrilled when a new bus stop with a modern shelter was built on Ti Rakau Drive just across from the Botany hub. “The walk to East Park from Bunnings or the Botany Town Centre, the two nearest ‘working’ bus stops isn’t much fun in the wet,” said Graham Pilgrim, chairperson of East Park Association. However the excitement was short-lived as commuters - including senior citizens waited at the bus stop for a bus that never came. There was a lot of confusion as Howick & Eastern Buses drivers zoomed right past the new shelter. In July last year, Auckland Transport (AT) told the Times that it had encountered some unforeseen issues with the safe operation of bus stop at all times of the day. “The bus stop couldn’t be used till the issues were resolved with the bus operator but we are working on it,” AT said at the time. A year on and AT spokesperson Mark Hannan has come clean. “When the outbound bus stop was planned, its purpose was to provide a missing bus stop in our network – to pair with the current inbound bus

After the stop was constructed and scheduled to be brought into active service, Howick & Eastern Buses raised significant safety concerns with the operation of the bus stop at certain times of day, “Particularly in the afternoon peak, when traffic backs up in the left hand lane waiting to turn from Ti Rakau Dr into Te Irirangi Dr,” he says. “The operator is of the view that it is not safe for a bus to depart this bus stop and make the necessary lane changes to get into the right turn lane to

access Te Irirangi Dr and then Botany Town Centre.” Mr Hannan says that Auckland Transport have investigated several options to address the safety concerns including the addition of an outbound bus lane which was deemed to cause too much general traffic congestion at the location. A relocation of the bus stop was also considered which would have seen it move a considerable distance to the west and thus not serve the residential area to the north that it was specifically built to cater to.

“As a workable solution cannot be found, Auckland Transport will be removing the bus stop and shelter – with the shelter being reused elsewhere. “We appreciate that this is not the outcome that any party wants, as we are working hard across the city to improve access to public transport services,” he says. “Regrettably, in this instance, a solution cannot be found and the closest bus stops will remain as current – either Stop 6142 adjacent to Burswood Dr or in Botany Town Centre.”

But Counties Manukau Police have understandably been keen to see more support.” The government announced an investment of $503 million into more police resourcing earlier this year to boost the number of front line officers. It will see 880 new sworn officers being recruited, as part of the overall staff increase of 1125. “It has been several years since an injection like this

has been made. The last time we did so, we boosted police numbers by 600 new officers. “The public have been calling for more emphasis on law and order and we are delivering, again. “I support the work East Area Commander Inspector Wendy Spiller and her team of local police have been doing in our patch. I’m pleased their efforts in supporting our community will be assisted with more frontline staff.”

Everyone has faults and you should not let them come in the way of friendship, says Peggy Rooney sharing her words of wisdom as she turns 100. The Irish lady who lived in Tui Vale Road in Cockle Bay for more than 40 years knows what it is to have good friends. Some of the old neighbours who lived on Tui Vale got together to throw a small party for Mrs Rooney’s 100th birthday. Elizabeth Davies, 69 said Mrs Rooney had no family left. “Her husband Cyril died almost 30 years ago. Peggy is now at the Howick Baptist Hospital since she had a fall last month. We want to do something special for her,” she said. “We thought we could surprise her with a small celebration and call all our old neighbours as well as people from Metlifecare in Pakuranga where Peggy was living in an apartment till she had a fall last month.” Mrs Davies, with neighbour Sheila Newbury, 82, approached New World to arrange for savouries and was very pleased when the supermarket offered to sponsor a sweet and savoury spread for the centenarian’s birthday celebration. They also made a collage of her old pictures and asked Mrs Rooney (who suffers from Alzheimer’s) if she recognised anyone. Looking at her own picture on the wall, the birthday girl dressed up in pretty pink with her hair and nails done up, said “it’s the Queen of England”, which had everyone share a good laugh. While the congratulatory message from the Queen was lost in post with the change of address, Mrs Rooney received a letter from outgoing Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson, acknowledging her milestone brithday. There was a constant stream of well wishers at the Tui Lounge in Howick Baptist Hospital despite severe weather warnings about Cyclone Cook storming the city. Someone popped the champagne, two cakes were cut and the neighbours got together to share anecdotes and sing Irish songs—all celebrating Mrs Rooney’s life as she turned 100.

Student with severe blood disorder inspires others ■■By Farida Master

ndrew Scott doesn’t let severe haemophilia define him - but says he can’t ignore it either. The Elim Christian College student, winner of the Youth with Disability Award hosted by New Zealand Youth Awards, has just returned from Wellington after receiving a trophy and certificate of congratulations from Youth Minister Nikki Kaye. The award recognises outstanding contribution towards supporting young people in the community. The 16-year-old who has been associated with haemophilia since birth has worked alongside children, peers and parents with bleeding disorders, taking a leadership role in sharing his story at camps hosted by the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand (HFNZ). “I care a lot about seeing the younger generation deal better with bleeding disorders,” he says . Andrew is an active member of the local youth board and youth group that works to educate, raise awareness and advocate for those with chronic illnesses and disabilities. “I have spent a lot of time in hospitals being sick and that has increased my appreciation for life. Some of my friends with the same ailment have passed away,” he says.

“Haemophilia is central to whom I am and it has affected me very positively.” Taking daily intravenous treatment as he injects his arm with an infusion of replacement factor to prevent bleeding, Andrew says that at times there is internal bleeding just out of doing simple things like walking or waking up in the

morning. “There are a lot of side complications that I don’t want to go into but it would suffice to say that it targets certain joints and muscles, and mine is knees. “I have got osteoarthritis caused by frequent bleeding in the joints.” On particularly bad days when there is a lot of pain he uses crutches and goes to school on a wheelchair. “Sometimes I may spiral down but I always step out of it,” says the Year 12 student. “My disability has helped me gain perspective and live one day at a time. It has never stopped me from participating in different activities “I always tell other children suffering from the same disease that don’t ever say you can’t do it because there will always be a way around it,” says Andrew who also works part time at a tech company. Leading by example, Andrew has not let his disability stop him from going on a school trip to Taiwan in December last year. This year in October he plans to travel on another school trip to Israel. Andrew attributes his positivity to his faith. “I don’t know how I would cope without my faith. It is prayer that has helped me a lot. “Also reading the glowing reference letters that people wrote to nominate me for this award, made me realise that I have been making a difference in their lives.”

he annual Peace Poppy Planting ceremony, an Anzac Day tribute which involves the whole community will be held on Friday April 21 at 1.30pm at the Botany Town Centre. More than 2000 poppies, which were carefully crafted in 2015, will once again be planted in the remembrance gardens throughout the centre as part of the 102nd anniversary of the first major military action fought by New Zealand and Australian forces

during the First World War. The aim of the Peace Poppies is to encourage shoppers to pause, reflect and pay tribute to those that fought to help defend the nation. The centre is encouraging locals of all age groups to stop and reflect, as they walk past, on the national day of significance. Local schools in the area have been invited to partake in the ceremony and everyone is welcome to plant poppies on the day as the centre is looking for community participation.

Watercare steps up on sewage leaks ■■By Laura Brookes

t’s been a wild, wet start to autumn across most of the country, but for concerned residents in Mellons Bay, the weather has brought on another unwanted visitor – leaking sewage. In the event of heavy rainfall, the area’s wastewater and stormwater network pipes are prone to flooding, leading to sewage overflow onto the beach and surrounding areas. Following a previous assertion that the stormwater overflow on September 25 was a one-off event and the first of its kind in more than 15 years, Howick Ward Councillors Dick Quax and Sharon Stewart announced at the Howick Local Board meeting on April 10 new preventative measures that will be carried out by Watercare this May in recognition of the ongoing issue. “The result of the problem down there [at Mellons Bay] is the stormwater getting into the wastewater system,” said Mr Quax. “I’ve seen [what happens]. It’s not a very nice look.” The news of further action from Watercare will hopefully come as a relief to the residents of Mellons Bay, including John Champion, who has voiced

his dissatisfaction with the way council has dealt with the stormwater overflows. “We believe health and safety is seriously compromised in our green and pleasant land.” Times reader Pearl Sidwell also contacted the Times regarding the issue, suggesting “this serious problem needs some greater attention than what it is getting from the council”. A Watercare representative has confirmed within the next month, Watercare will be installing an alarm inside a manhole cover to provide

forewarning to staff when the water gets to a certain level and allow teams to react as quickly as possible, instead of relying on the public to call in. It’s a move that was questioned at the meeting by board member Bob Wichman, who asked councillors precisely how Watercare plans to react, after being forewarned of the rising water levels from the installed sensors. Mrs Stewart, however, commended the recent efforts of Watercare and Healthy Waters, in a time that has been “really, really hard”. “Watercare and Healthy Waters have really been quite outstanding with the work they’ve had to carry out. “We do have a lot of problems that have been created by stormwater. What’s happening down in our beaches is not just happening in the Howick areas, and not just in the Auckland region. In fact, it’s happening right through the country.” She also encouraged residents to ensure they have adequate insurance to guard against future weather events. “If you’re not insured, make sure you’re insured, because it looks like we’re going to have a lot more of these serious floodwater incidents.”

Georgia gets star treatment ■■Farida Master Teenager Georgia Gibson spent a month in Thailand being treated like a pop star. The 15-year-old from Howick College was on an exchange programme to Thailand’s Montfort College and didn’t exactly know how to react when students of the private school in Chiang Mai screamed out Taylor Swift’s name and wanted to take selfies with Georgia “I was the first international student attending the Catholic school that has been around for 80 years and so they were all wondering, ‘who is this blonde walking around the school?’” said the blue-eyed Year 11 student. She recently completed a four-

week exchange trip to Thailand funded by the Thai embassy. “My host sister, who spoke perfect English because she has been on an exchange programme to America, told me `you are the most popular girl at school. They are all talking about you in Thai’.” She says she wanted to cry flying back home “because my host family was so caring and loving. They took me around to all the places I would have never seen had I travelled by myself”. One of her best experiences was visiting a rescued elephant sanctuary where she had the opportunity to feed and bathe elephants which freely moved around in herds. Georgia hopes to be a veterinary nurse. “The elephants sat down in the

river and we got a chance to sit on them and brush them down,” she says. From attending class to learning Thai cooking, making a Kiwiana presentation and even trying to teach Thai students some Maori words—her only regret is that the trip should have been longer. “There was an English programme at school which was good because everyone in the class spoke English. They said they understood my accent very easily,” she says. “Everyone was so friendly it was like the entire country smiles.” Georgia now talks to her host family regularly and can’t wait to go back. “I would seriously recommend this to everyone.”

It was a challenging and delicious dish.

Saint Kentigern College has formally apologised for an accident during a school musical production last April in which two student actors had their throats cut. The school will also enter into a restorative justice process with the families involved. The incident was subject to a health and safety inquiry by WorkSafe New Zealand. The Saint Kentigern Trust Board on April 5 issued a statement regarding the incident which happened during opening night of the school’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street a year ago which grabbed international headlines. Saint Kentigern had to cancel the remaining scheduled shows following the accident in which the two teens were injured. The statement reads: “The Saint Kentigern Trust Board has entered into an enforceable undertaking agreement with WorkSafe New Zealand. “This agreement has been reached following WorkSafe’s investigation into an accident in which very serious injuries were sustained by two students at the college production last year.” Dr John Kernohan, deputy chairperson of the Trust Board, said the board “sincerely apologises for the fact that the accident happened and for the harm caused to all those families involved”. “Saint Kentigern accepts that

it should have done more to acknowledge the seriousness of what happened immediately after the accident. The injuries were not minor. The injuries were significant and lifethreatening,” he said. “Individual members of the Trust Board personally feel deep regret and take full responsibility for the emotional and physical harm that has been suffered by those students involved. Ensuring that all students can learn in a safe environment remains Saint Kentigern’s first priority. “As part of the enforceable undertaking agreement, Saint Kentigern is entering into a restorative justice process with the families, and will not comment further until this process is completed.” The Sweeney Todd incident resulted in two boys, both 16, having their necks cut with a prop razor at the opening performance. They were released from hospital the following day. St Kentigern’s head of college, Steve Cole, said at the time the “unfortunate” incident happened halfway through the performance’s second act. The prop was a razor which had been blunted and wrapped in several protective layers, Mr Cole said in April last year. “It’s normal for Sweeney Todd to have such an instrument [and it] clearly had been checked many, many times.“ It has been bound and cellophaned and all sorts of things. It had been blunted and had been through all sorts of

Jane Kneale, communications manager at St Kents, told the Times in December Ms Bishop was leaving to follow academic aspirations. “I can confirm that Emma will be amongst the staff who have chosen to leave the college at the end of the year (2016) to pursue new challenges,” she said. “In Emma’s case, she plans to return to university to study towards a PhD.”

We need answers

I, like many others, am appalled at the current state of affairs re the responsibility of the ongoing operational costs of the Uxbridge centre. To think that rates revenue has been spent on the total refurbishment of the centre to then be told by Auckland council that running costs will not be covered by the council. This is 18 months on from its opening. This is a fantastic facility and to lose it would be shameful. Instead of wasting money as the council does, budget should have been set aside for the financial running of the centre. The other issue that I am really hot about is the disgusting state of many of our roadside verges around not only Howick and Pakuranga but the greater Auckland area. Do we not have pride in the environment we live in? I read in your April 13 issue that Auckland Council will be putting

I for one maintain a mower just to cut the berm in front of my property as I am proud to own the house I live in and own. I have no other grass on my section. move from Auckland Council to hold maintenance contractors more accountable in new contracts has been well-received by local resident Mark Hanson, who is calling for contractors to improve their performance in maintaining parks and open spaces. Auckland Council manages more than 5000 sites across the region, and existing council maintenance contracts for these, including parks, buildings and open space, are due to expire on June 30. New contracts are due to take effect on July 1. Under the new contracts, “an improved approach” to maintenance services will be adopted, with the aim of delivering more services without compromising quality and encouraging accountability, ensuring that parks, reserves and roadsides within Auckland are maintained and developed to provide a sustainable, safe, clean and healthy environment. That’s not what has happened up until now, said Mr Hanson, who is an avid jogger around the east Auckland area, and is frequently met with disappointment at the unsightly state of local parks. On March 24, he visited Armoy Drive Reserve where the calfhigh grass had clearly not been mown for a significant period of time. The tallest spikes measured at a whopping 70 centimetres, while the bulk of the grass measured between the 20 and 30 centimetre mark. “It’s a disgrace. I’ve got American friends who come over to visit, and I’d be embarrassed to bring them here. We’re [currently] dealing with a council contract which doesn’t have sufficient integrity of management. What I want to know is why they have let it get to this stage. “Would you want to be playing with a three-year-old in this?” In an email to local board members with a video attachment, Mr Hanson highlighted the unsatisfactory condition of Armoy Drive

Reserve and urged members to visit the site. “I would strongly urge you to visit this reserve to see first-hand the terrible condition it is in,” he wrote. “It’s appalling. You really have to walk amongst it yourself to see the degradation and totally unsatisfactory this once wellkept reserve has become.” It’s a similar situation to what he’s seen at Gracechurch and Point View reserves, said Mr Hanson. “Sadly, it’s not the only reserve or open space that is badly in need of the contractor’s attention in the Ward.” Auckland Council’s general manager of community facilities, Rod Sheridan, told the Times the council has high expectations for its contractors to deliver the best possible service to Aucklanders. “Our staff are looking into the

concerns about grass and trees in Armoy Drive Reserve and we encourage anyone with concerns about maintenance of the local community facilities to call the council’s contact centre on 09 301 0101. “Following a thorough procurement process, the council has identified maintenance contractors that can provide value for money and better local services for Aucklanders. “From 1 July these contractors will be subject to performance measures that are linked to financial consequences. “They will also be subject to stronger auditing and reporting, and will have dedicated council staff overseeing contract delivery.” ➤➤The Times contacted Howick Local Board chairperson David Collings regarding the issue but did not receive a response.

here’s no current world record for the biggest pirate sword fight in the Guinness Book of World Records. That’s something Owairoa Primary School hope they’ve changed. On April 6, 923 participants gathered to take part in the Great Pirate Clash – a sword fight of epic proportions in the hopes of setting a new world record. The fight, which took place on the school sports field, lasted for approximately 15 minutes as mini pirates battled one another from various ship bases. “We are all recuperating

from the pirate clash injuries after clashing with such a large number of energetic young sword fighters,” said school principal Alan McIntyre. It was an idea the school started thinking about toward the end of last year to tie in with a week-long focus on literacy, allowing students to dress up in pirate outfits for five days. The pirate-themed book week saw kids making ‘wanted’ posters, building pirate ships for the upcoming fight, creating treasure maps and making regular trips to the school hall, which was packed with Scholastic books in an effort to encourage kids to read more. “It’s one of those

They’ve travelled more than 12,000 kilometres to New Zealand, and now Rev Josh Bowlin’s family is settled in their Bucklands Beach home, ready to take on the vast opportunities the country has to offer. Mr Bowlin is the new full-time associate pastor at East City Wesleyan Church (ECW) in Botany, where he leads the youth, young adults and community programmes. He’s also taken on the position of director of the LifeGrowth Community Trust, the community services arm of ECW, and is excited about the difference he can make in the east Auckland community. Mr Bowlin made the trip from South Dakota along with wife Rebecca and their four young children at the end of February to relocate to New Zealand, where he lived and worked in South Auckland in 2003. Ingredients • 2 cups rolled oats • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 cup plain flour • 1/2 cup melted butter • 1 tbls golden syrup • 2 tbls boiling water • 1 tsp bicarbonate soda (add a little more water if mixture is too dry)

Method 1. Combine dry ingredients. 2. Mix golden syprup, boiling water and bicarbonate of soda until they froth. Add melted butter. 3. Combine butter mixture and dry ingredients. 4. Drop teaspoons of mixture onto floured tray, allowing room for spreading. 5. Bake in a slow oven.

Dance The 1960s was a time of change and teenage revolution and in the thick of it is a story of ‘plus size’ girl called Tracy Turnblad. Tracy’s larger than life personality gains her a lifechanging opportunity when she is chosen to dance on the popular ‘Corny Collins Show’. Tracy is transformed from social outcast to queen of the dance floor and then sets out to use her new-found fame and power to right the wrongs of the social injustices of the time. Hairspray Jr is a familyfriendly adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical and starts at Harlequin Musical Theatre on April 19th. Tracy is played by Melody Lui-Webster of Farm Cove Intermediate, who is no stranger to the stage in her fourth show with the production team of The Children’s Musical Theatre Studio. Hairspray Jr is brought to the stage by director Susanne Dell and musical director Lynnette Leggett, and a cast of no less than 64 local children who all have energy to burn and the ability to bring the house down in this big and bold production. Sue and Lynnette would like to give thanks to the parents who tirelessly give their time to work on sets, props, costumes, sound and lighting, hair and makeup. Without them the show would not go on.

its peak level of activity for the year so far as median house prices firmed and sales volumes rose strongly across New Zealand during March, which is traditionally the busiest month for real estate transactions across New Zealand. On a seasonally adjusted basis sales for March rose 2 per cent compared to February, indicating an expected seasonal effect. REINZ CEO Bindi Norwell says: “March reflects the seasonal peak for the year so

far, with the largest number of homes sold and the largest month-on-month increase in the median price, as we normally expect to see this month. “Auckland has recorded another record median price and a 66% jump in sales volumes on February, but it should be noted that the ‘March effect’ is more pronounced in Auckland than in other regions. Further, the level of inventory in Auckland are rising quickly with 47 per cent increase in inventory over the past month, offering buyers more choice.”

HPI provides a new level of detail and understanding of the true movements of housing values over time. It does this by analysing how prices in a market are influenced by a range of attributes such as land area, floor area, number of bedrooms etc. to create a single, more accurate measure of housing activity and trends over time. Using the Reserve Bank’s preferred Sale Price to Appraisal Ratio (SPAR) methodology, the REINZ HPI uses unconditional sales data (when the price is agreed) rather than at settlement, which can often be weeks later. It is therefore more accurate and timely. Describing the new REINZ HPI as ‘the gold standard’ in New Zealand house price analysis tools, Norwell says: “The REINZ HPI takes many aspects of market composition into account, and thus provides more accurate results. When applied to the March data, the HPI indicates that the lift in the median price was largely driven by changes in the underlying mix of dwellings sold in March

compared to February. While the median price went up $51,000 across New Zealand, the HPI was stable month-onmonth, at 0.0 per cent change, indicating more sales in higher price brackets than lower ones. “Furthermore, the HPI numbers are backed by anecdotal evidence from around the country saying that investors and first home buyers are facing more challenges in securing bank lending compared to this time last year, which is lowering the number of dwellings sold in the lower price bracket. “As a result, there are comparatively more sales in higher price brackets, which is lifting the median price. Although this gives the overall impression of rising prices, the underlying data shows that the median is moving more due to differences in the mix of dwellings being sold each month.” Year-on-year, the HPI indicates that activity nationwide has lifted 10 per cent, up in Auckland by 8.3 per cent and outside Auckland by 13 per cent.

t’s great to see teenage golfer Lydia Ko back to top form, even if critics question the wisdom of her decision to sack South African caddie Gary Matthews after just nine tournaments together. But given her relative slump in form since July when she has failed to secure an LPGA win, her latest decision is more understandable than her termination of a hugely successful partnership with Australian Jason Hamilton with whom she won 10 of her 14 LPGA tournaments, including both majors. Since then, Hamilton has had far more success carrying the bag for South Korean Ha Na Jang than Matthews enjoyed with our New Zealand sweetheart. It is, of course, a classic case of the chicken and the egg when deciding whether it is the player or the caddie who is at fault in a game notorious for its fluctuations of form. Indeed Ko had seven different caddies in her rookie year before settling on Hamilton in September, 2014. “I know she copped a lot of flak for that but if she didn’t see what’s out there, then she’s not going to know what she wants,” Hamilton said in March, 2015, before she claimed her first Australian Open by two strokes.

“I do Aimpoint (the green-reading system) with my putting, but I also ask him for his opinion on reading,” she said at the time. “He gets my yardages, helps me with club selection and he lines me up. So there isn’t a lot he doesn’t do.” Asked if it seemed he was doing everything but actually striking the ball, Hamilton admitted: “That’s what it feels like sometimes. That was one reservation about picking up the job. If I’m so involved and she plays poorly I’m going to be the one who cops all the flak.” Tellingly, when weighing up his time previously with Yani Tseng, Hamilton said: “Relationships can go stale. I got to the point where I felt I wasn’t really able to help her anymore. I’d basically used up all my good lines.” In his early days with Ko, Hamilton made an observation that no longer seems to apply. “She realises she doesn’t have to reconfigure her game to get to the next level.” Since sacking him and her coach and changing clubs, the Kiwi perfectionist has succeeded in attaining more length with her drives. But she had lost the exquisite putting touch that made her the world’s best – a classic case of “drive for show and putt for dough”. Commentators observed she had changed her putting grip and was hesitant before striking the ball.
