he glint of medals in the morning sun, a sense of pride, honour and camaraderie, an Anzac Day parade, a flight of Warbirds, the firing of the Minute Gun, laying of wreaths on the cenotaph at the memorial service at Stockade Hill – all marked the 102nd anniversary of the Gallipoli landings by Anzac troops. The turnout at both, the Dawn Service as well as the 11am Civic Service in Howick was huge. “We may be rivals on the sports field but are comrades on the battlefield,” said chair of Howick Local Board David Collings about returned servicemen and women across the ditch. “The names of four World War I servicemen have been added to the cenotaph here on Stockade Hill. Researched by local historian Alan Le Roche, these men all had strong ties with the Howick area, and we acknowledge the four of them – Philip George Arniboldi, Thomas Corbett McLaren, Private Nicholas Colin Stitchbury and Charles Leslie Mounce.” Rev Richard Waugh offered prayers as he remembered those who, for the sake of peace, made war; as well as those who forsook all at the call of service. ➤ Turn to page 2

Aliens learn about cultural celebrations ■■Farida Master

t’s not very often that books are presold before they are published. A group of Young Enterprise Scheme students from Ormiston Senior College have managed this feat at they have presold 70 books with an advance order from six different schools as well as from parents and teachers. Year 13 student Vaneel Ram, chief executive officer of the group Festivilia says the idea behind their children’s book ‘A Year of Festivals’ is based on exploring cultural celebrations and discovering the amazing diversity of New Zealand. “Being immigrants living in such a multicultural society like the one in Flat Bush, which now reflects the diaspora in Auckland, we didn’t know much about multicultural festivals,” he says. “We were at a loss. We went along to the Lantern Festival without knowing the significance or why we were

attending it.” Using their personal experience to bind the book, Krishin Rava chief financial officer of Festivilia says the book covers the Treaty of Waitangi, including its origin. “It also brings to life with illustrations, festivals like the
Lantern Festival and the Indian Diwali Festival. We even have activities like colouring, spot the difference and Lord Ram finding his beloved Sita in a maze,” he says. Production manager of the group, Kaden Keshan Naidoo explains that the central
character of the book is an alien. “It’s something children relate to these days,” he says. Drawing a parallel between aliens and new arrivals to the country, he says: “For someone like me who is a migrant, I do feel like a bloop, an outsider on an adventure in the land of the Long White Cloud. Hence the creation of aliens in the book and how they try to comprehend the diversity of cultures.” The idea of understanding and respecting different cultures, appealed to a lot of schools including — Baverstock Oaks School, Mission Heights Primary School, Ormiston Primary School, Everglade School, Manurewa East School and Ormiston Junior College. The group has plans to introduce the children’s book to pre-schools and gradually take it to the next level by going nationwide. “We even hope to take it international,” ends Vaneel.
New walkway proposed ■■By Farida Master Following the success of the Pakuranga Rotary Walkway, plans to expand the network of walkways along the Tamaki Estuary through to Highbrook is in the process of being finalised by Howick Local Board. Currently, the section between Ti Rakau Dr Bridge, near Chipmunks on 241 Ti Rakau Dr, Pakuranga has been earmarked as the starting point for the walkway which will wind its way through to Trugwood Dr near Stonedon Dr, East Tamaki. The idea is in line with the Healthy Howick initiative which was kickstarted last year. “With so much traffic congestion that has people sitting in the traffic for hours,

the plan is to encourage people living in the area to walk or cycle to work using the walkway,” says Garry Boles, Howick Local Board who leads the parks and sports work programme for the local board. “The walkway cuts out the back roads and offers a scenic view.
“Also, we want people to be aware of our coast line. We are going to tidy it up and make it look better,” he says. As part of the Greenways plan, Mr Boles says that they are going to be interconnecting the whole area. The local board is looking to develop its draft

Greenways plan later this year. The proposed walkway would link the various esplanade reserves along the way and also allow access to the recently completed Burswood Walkway in phase two of the proposed walkway. The design of the project is expected to be included in the work programme for 2017/18 year, which the local board will be considering in the next few months. “We have conducted a survey on how many people use walkways and the percentage is very high.” Mr Boles says there are 277 parks in the Howick Ward area that includes Howick, Pakuranga and Botany, and some of them are in the process of being upgraded.

RALLYING
Flat Bush rally team chase championship Flat Bush-based rally driver Matt Jensen and codriver Kieran Anstis are aiming to start their attack on the New Zealand Rally Championship at the weekend’s Rally of Whangarei. They are targeting a strong top five finish amongst a field of top International and national drivers. With a handful of top three finishes to their name, the Flat Bush rallying duo have set a goal of taking out the Category 5 Championship this year. The team has made some changes to its EVO 9 rally car over the past few months. “We have changed a few things on the car including a new engine that is more powerful and reliable, also a quicker steering rack which has helped me gain more confidence in my driving,” said Jensen. “We have done a few small testing events since these changes and it has proven the car is a lot quicker.” Earlier this year Jensen found out he was a successful applicant of the Paddon Foundation, a programme set up by Kiwi WRC star Hayden Paddon to guide and support selected New Zealand drivers and co-drivers. “It is an incredible opportunity to be a part of this programme,” said Jensen. “The assistance and guidance is invaluable and it is helping us a lot this year.” Elite Motorsport Academy graduate Anstis is in the co-driver’s seat this season and is eager to get underway “I’m really looking forward to this season. Matt and I work well together and he has put all the tools in place to have a successful year.” Meanwhile, the team has new sponsors onboard this year with Panasonic, Elf, NZKW, Heller’s, Motorsport Engineering and Aarque Group. “With them joining the team it has enabled us to have a good go at the championship,” said Jensen. ➤➤You can follow the team’s progress during this weekend’s International Rally of Whangarei – April 28-30 - on their facebook page MaddyJRallysport.

uyers have been snapping up sections in the Fairburn Flat Bush subdivision. A total of 74 sections were allotted in the first stage and agent Aman Pannu of Ray White Flat Bush has already sold 54 lots since October. Sales activity was quick off the block, only dampened by a quick break for Mr Pannu to get married and have a well-earned honeymoon. Buyers returning to the market, will be closely watching the launch of remaining lots, where sections on the high side of Flat Bush School Road range from 325sqm to a generous 864sqm, Mr Pannu said. Fairburn is located within six minutes’ drive to public transportation, Ormiston schools, Ormiston Town Centre and the Ormiston hospital. In total, the subdivision will incorporate almost 400 sections, including lifestyle blocks of up to 14,000sqm. Fairburn Flat Bush offers a variety of lot sizes, layouts, and a culture that is unique within the Flat Bush structure plan. The development strategy focuses on selling the majority of the sections to families in order to promote individual house designs and hence break the Flat

Bush stereotype, said Mr Pannu. “Discerning buyers are motivated by the feeling of space and atmosphere provided by Fairburn, which offers them the opportunity to create an individualised family home with a lifestyle vibe,” he said. Development Advisory Services are the development managers and CEO Paula ter Brake said it is this individuality which provides much sought after point of difference. “Unlike other large scale subdivisions, the developer has specifically sought to offer buyers a wide range of lot choices, particularly targeted
at families looking for large, affordable and potentially multigenerational homes,” she said. Another positive for families is the elevated position and green spaces including Barry Curtis Park which is within easy reach. “Almost all sections enjoy elevations” said Mr Pannu. Buyers can get the whole package comprising space, lifestyle, location and six-months’ builders terms from $685,000 for sections ranging from 320sqm to 400sqm. Sections in the 400sqm to 450sqm range are priced in the region of $720,000 with the larger lots of 520sqm to 800sqm going for between $870,000 to $1 million.

on five core services - prevention, intensive intervention, care support, youth justice, and transition support into adulthood. Although there is plenty of work ahead of us, a number of changes are already well underway. The first phase of reforms will see the age of state care extended to a young person’s 18th birthday. There will also be an independent youth advocacy service set up called VOYCE. Set up in partnership with young people who have experienced care, the government, NGOs and philanthropic sector, VOYCE will provide a strong independent voice from children and young people. Another important change will see a broader range of professionals with specialist skills working in the sector. Social workers will still be the main professionals responsible for carrying out these functions. Sadly, many children in years gone past have been failed by the state. We need a better system in place to keep vulnerable children safe. We are now on a better pathway towards that. Jami-Lee Ross MP for Botany

Visual display with a moving message
President of Howick RSA Mike Cole was pleasantly surprised when he started planning red Peace Poppies created by children of local schools at the Garden of Remembrance in Botany Town Centre. Soon there were curious children and passers-by that spontaneously joined in to create an eye-catching visual display with a poignant message. The young ones happily worked together giving new meaning to the adage: remembering our past and embracing the future.
Ensuring our vulnerable children and young people have a safe, stable and loving home so they can go on to lead successful lives is extremely important. The recently-established Ministry for Vulnerable Children will work closely with families and will put the needs of children and young people first. The new Ministry puts a high emphasis on children and young people’s safety and wellbeing. It will work with families to ensure children and young people get access to the care and support they need, and will ensure they have a say in decisions that affect them. This is what young people have told us they want. This change is a great investment into these children and young people’s future. It will help us tackle issues such as child abuse and will give our kids the helping hand many of them need. The new organisation is the start of a four to five year major transformation programme to build a more child-centred care and protection system, focusing on harm and trauma prevention and early intervention, rather than crisis management. The programme takes a crosssector approach and incorporates all influences in children’s lives. It draws on the expertise, experience and capability of professionals, communities, caregivers, young people and families. Particularly, the Ministry will focus

he next exhibition opens on May 1. Bright Light, Soft Launch features 13 New Zealand artists, all exploring representations of the figure through image-making. One artist featured is Jenna Baydee, a Half Moon Bay resident and Macleans College alumni. Following a recent trip to Paris, Jenna has been combining her love of fashion photography and graphic design to produce beautiful images of family and loved ones. Also in this exhibition is artist Mish O’Neil. Her practice is based on analogue processes, primarily making large scale pinhole cameras (some as large as phone booths). The gallery will be hosting a photogram workshop at the gallery for children to talk more about old school image making. There is also a small display of works from the local secondary schools which will be on display in the Meeting Room from the start of Term 2 until the beginning of June. The annual Estuary Awards open on June 10 with the awards ceremony beginning at 2.30pm, says manager and curator Zoe Hoeberigs. “As part of the awards we have a few public programmes that will be running,” she says. “Of particular interest may be our clean up day in collaboration with the Tamaki Estuary

t’s the final days of Fashion Revolution Week and year 13 student Lauren Blakeley wants the world to know what the fuss is all about. The Elim Christian College student has spent the past term working on a research project concerning the social and environmental impacts of fast fashion – a term used by fashion retailers to express the quick movement of clothing items from the runway to the shops. Where items of clothing used to arrive fresh in store to remain for a whole season, they now remain in style for merely a few weeks before new clothes arrive. That’s the inspiration behind Fashion Revolution – a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry, and for a radical change in the way clothes are sourced, produced and purchased. “Few people even know the meaning of fast fashion. We contribute to the issue by even not knowing the truth of the industry,” said Lauren. “I feel that Emma Watson put it perfectly: ‘You want what you’re wearing to say something about you, about who you are’. I don’t want to be wearing clothes that are causing environmental harm or forcing someone to work in inhumane conditions.” The #whomademyclothes campaign as part of Fashion Revolution Week starting

April 24, marking the fourth anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where 1,138 people were killed in 2013. “I’m mind-blown by what I’ve discovered,” she said. “Machines aren’t just making our clothes – its people... but it’s also not limited to that. It’s damaging the world.” She’s talking about places like Xintang in China – a village also known as Jean Town – where author Claire Press described how the rivers run blue, the air stinks and the dust in the streets is blue. “We don’t see that side of fashion,” said Lauren. “We don’t see the lives it’s impacting or the places it’s damaging - we just see the nice cost on our end.” Now, the 17-year-old is calling for consumers to jump on board
the revolution by supporting outlets that back fashion sustainability. “It’s not about telling all our favourite shops to close their doors, or telling them ‘you’re ruining the world’, but it’s about encouraging them to do better, and up their standards. “I’m not a perfect example of an ethical wardrobe but I’ve taken on the idea of buy less and buy better. For example, opshopping is a great way to know your money is going to a worthy cause.” She suggests consumers can make use of popular app ‘Good on You’ available for iOs and Android which provides sustainability ratings for various fashion stores. ➤➤Fashion Revolution Week runs until April 30.

hree Howick businessmen are preparing to set off for the ride of a lifetime, alongside some rugby legends. Gerald Patterson, Mike Benzie and Bruce Bothwell are set to cycle from Wellington to Auckland in July as part of the Ride of the Lions - Ride of the Legends 2017, raising money for the New Zealand foundation for Conductive Education. Ride of the Lions was set up in 2013 between former British and Irish Lions rugby players and is described as mixing the endurance of long-distance cycling with the camaraderie of the rugby field. The ride will see five former rugby players each side from the All Blacks and the British Lions ride alongside 40 other participants - 20 from New Zealand and 20 from the UK – as they take stops throughout regional New Zealand on their trip north between rugby matches. Former All Blacks who will be on the tour include Buck Shelford, Albert Anderson, Bernie McCahill, Ian Kirkpatrick and Andy Earl. The ride officially begins in Wellington on July 2nd after riders watch the Lions take on

the All Blacks in Wellington before the first leg of the ride to Masterton – a 127km trek. They’ll cycle another 114km to Palmerston North before earning a rest day with a side of optional golf. That’s then followed by 149km from Taupo to Matamata, 90km the next day as they travel onto Thames and a final 54km stretch to Coromandel before catching a ferry over to Auckland to enjoy the final test match between the Lions and All Blacks. Despite none of the group covering that much distance on a bike before, they all agree they took it on as “a bit of fun.” They frequent many of the trails in the South Island and have competed in many cycling events before.
The men describe themselves as “real community guys,” each actively involved in organisations such the Howick Business Association, the Rotary Club and local sports. They hope to raise around $15,000 between them through pre-ride fundraising efforts which are in the midst of planning. When it comes to pushing them to their physical limits, the tour is sure to be a challenge – but the rewards either end of the trek is what makes it worth it. “We’re social cyclists – but keen rugby fans,” they laugh. ➤➤For more information on the team’s journey, or to donate, go to https:// give.everydayhero.com/nz/ blokesonspokes.

Health, Beauty & Well-being Timely treatment with leading experts
ADVERTORIAL JH11570A
Not many are aware that New Zealand now officially has the world’s highest rate of invasive melanoma –the most deadly form of skin cancer. The grave fact is that over 300 New Zealanders die every year from melanoma. Whilst most of the damage has already been done, from sun exposure in years gone by, the team at Skinsite strongly believes that early detection can make a difference. “Early detection is the key,” says Dr Anthony Tam. “We recognised this many years ago when we first set up Skinsite and to this end, the technique of dermoscopy was implemented.” Dermoscopy is the use of an instrument which allows visualisation of malignant changes before they are obvious to the naked eye. It is a vital skill that all the Skinsite doctors have had years of training and experience in. Dermoscopy has since become proven as the gold standard for melanoma diagnosis. Combined with digital mapping of moles and Total Body Photography where baseline images of moles are taken for future comparison, Skinsite offers a full complement of tools to help diagnose melanomas when they are less invasive. In an exciting move Skinsite has recently expanded and is now operating from two convenient locations, in Pakuranga and Remuera. Both sites will be fully accredited locations and they have recently taken possession of a larger consulting room in Remuera. “It allows us to do more complex surgical procedures there than we were previously able to do,” says Dr Tam. Dr Tam works along with Dr Wee Ling Khoo and Dr Sarah Redfern who also consults at the Remuera clinic. Committed to continuous education, the team of doctors at Skinsite will be attending the World Melanoma Congress later this year in Brisbane. Skinsite doctors are Affiliated Providers with Southern Cross Healthcare for skin cancer treatment. Branching out into full time procedural skin work two years ago, has

Dr Tam with Skinsite’s ultrasound scanner. Times photo Wayne Martin allowed Dr Tam to fully focus his skills in his chosen field. At the end of last year, he started working with the Plastic Surgical department at Middlemore Hospital at the Manchester See and Treat Unit. The aim is to achieve more efficient care of skin cancer patients in the public system and so far has been very well received. Another service that will be keeping Skinsite busy in the winter is the treatment of leg veins. Both varicose veins and skin veins are treated at Skinsite by way of Sclerotherapy which involves injecting the problem veins and thus closing off the flow. Dr Tam has found that the ideal time to deal with leg veins is in the winter so that the stockings can be worn with more comfort. It also helps that by the time summer comes by, the veins have all settled. Skinsite is also very lucky to have expert sonographer Bronwen Allen with a vast experience in vein mapping, on board. Call Skinsite to find out more about free consultation for Varicose Veins. It’s time to end poverty in New Zealand When Rata and her family found themselves with nowhere to sleep, they were forced to live in the back of an old station wagon in a carpark, for weeks on end. No one should have to live like this. But right now, the reality is there are thousands of families living in poverty like Rata’s that need your urgent help. The Salvation Army is all about giving these struggling people the help they need to get back on their feet again. But we can’t do any of this without the support of Kiwis like you. Please support our Red Shield Appeal and together, we can end poverty in New Zealand.

Mayday, mayday, it’s a code black F
ord is launching two limited edition vehicles on May 1, and you can have any colour you want as long as it’s
black. Ford Ranger FX4 and the Ford Everest FX2 boast Shadow Black details and a little more attitude than the mainstream versions. Ranger FX4 is limited to 200 vehicles, and the Everest FX2 is limited to just 50 examples. The Ranger FX4 arrives as the Ford Ranger’s popularity continues to grow. The Ranger has been the best-selling new vehicle in the country for the last two years, and its popularity continues to grow. In 2017, Ranger has taken an early lead as the country’s number one new vehicle with 810 Ford Rangers sold in March alone. “The Ranger FX4 makes a great ute even more extraordinary with its unique style and boldness, and that’s a difficult thing to do with a vehicle that already looks great and has won so many awards including the NZAA and Motoring Writers’ Guild’s Best in Class five years in a row,” said Jeremy Nash, Ford New Zealand Marketing Manager for Light Commercial and SUVs. “The designers have risen to the challenge though, and done a great job with this one. We don’t expect the limited numbers to last long.” Ranger FX4 is based on the XLT, and adds larger 18” Stark Grey alloy wheels, black bonnet and tailgate decal wraps, and side decals with ‘FX4’ branding. The pick-up also gets a blacked out sports bar, rear bumper, side steps and door handles, along with a unique design black grille. Inside, there are leather accented ‘FX4’
branded seats, front and rear carpet mats, and black interior highlights. FX4 has a recommended retail price of $65,390. The limited edition Everest FX2, which is based on the Everest Trend, not only arrives as a special edition with a similar treatment as the Ranger FX4, but it also brings a twowheel drive (RWD) Everest to the range. Everest FX2, in RWD only, has unique 18” wheels, a blacked out grille, tinted windows, black roof rails and leather seat trim. Recommended retail is $69,990. Ranger FX4 and Everest FX2 have SYNC3, Ford’s latest in-vehicle communications and entertainment platform that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, faster performance, more conversational voice recognition, intuitive smartphone-like touchscreen and an improved graphic user interface. The FX4 is in available as an automatic only, powered by the same five-cylinder 3.2-litre turbo diesel engine found in XLT that produces 147kW and 470Nm; Ranger FX4 costs $2350 more than the XLT automatic that it’s based on. Your view Leave our war memorial alone I have been alarmed to hear of some actions occurring at the Howick Information Centre recently. The war memorial sign lettering on the face of the building has recently been removed by persons unknown and for what reasons we do not know but we note that the Howick Village Draft Plan contains a proposal to remove the Information Centre totally to make way for the market and covered stalls. As one of the war memorial buildings built in memory of fallen ex-servicemen of Howick aided by funds raised by former ratepayers, we are sure your readers feel equally that removal of this historic building would be sacrilege at the time of the centenary of WWI. This is one of the two war memorial edifices in Howick and an important part of our history. A polished marble slab at the entrance bears the inscription: “1914-1919 / In gratitude to those who served / In sympathy with those who suffered / In loving remembrance of those / who gave their lives / 1939 – 1945”. Council has no right to remove our monuments to our history for current commercial gain. We say do not remove the information centre It is manned at no cost to the community by volunteers. It is a necessary hub and source of information and citizen’s advice and provides an indispensable free legal service. Leave our historic character buildings alone. Only by recognising the buildings which relate to the Special Character of Howick can we hope to preserve our identity in the future Gayleen Mackereth Howick

Should ratepayers fund this? Re Auckland Unitary Plan Relationship Agreements. I note that on page 87, item 9 of the Relationship Agreement Template it states that “Council has committed to achieving better outcomes for Maori that contribute significantly to lifting Maori economic, social and cultural wellbeing”. While there is most probably universal agreement in the wish to achieve better outcomes for Maori and lifting their social and cultural wellbeing, I question whether this is the role of local government whose funding base comes from ratepayers, basically in order to provide essential services desperately needed and already inadequately funded in this city. Social goals, on the other

Our local dairy owner was recently violently assaulted and robbed. The persons who assaulted him made a frenzied attack on him resulting in his having to be hospitalised. He was carrying out a service to the community by running a legitimate business. The points I would like to make are: Our present so-called justice system makes no provision for physical punishment to be inflicted on the person who commits an assault no matter how badly or viciously it is done (when there was capital punishment in New Zealand there were about four murders a year, now it is a weekly occurrence. It is my belief that the deterrence has gone). People who commit violent crime should be deported if they are not NZ citizens, Take a leaf out of the Aussies’ book. We don’t need or want them here. Arthur Moore, Pakuranga hand, are surely the role of central government and funded by the taxpayer. Therefore such policies, together with adequate funding to reach the desired outcomes, should come from central government not Auckland ratepayers. Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

the troubled 2005 squad coaches by Clive Woodward, despite Graham Henry’s claim they have undertaken a suicidal mission. It is tough but they have chosen 41 players and face only Auckland and the Crusaders of the five NZ Super Rugby franchises who will be at full strength. The Hurricanes, Chiefs and Highlanders will be without their All Blacks. Unfortunately, NZ Maori are not the force they once were. But they will be strengthened by their internationals with Liam Messam, Elliott Dixon, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Damian McKenzie, and Rieko and Akira Ioane likely candidates if injury free. Although the national selectors are unlikely to spring a few surprises, there are a few noninternationals who have made a huge impact this season. Leading the pack is former Aucklander Vince Aso, who has starred at centre and right wing for the Hurricanes where he has scored 10 tries including a hattrick in the 56-2 thrashing of the Stormers. Joining him is Beauden Barrett’s not so little brother, Jordie, aged 20, who is our best goal-kicker. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

in the midfield, neither has been better than solid this season. Left wing Julian Savea is not firing for the star-studded Hurricanes and right wings Israel Dagg and Nehe Milner-Skudder are sidelined with injuries. Waisake Naholo has just returned from his. Hence I find it difficult to understand the New Zealand media’s confidence in discounting the threat the Lions pose. In truth they have strong, tough forwards, with captain Sam Warburton enjoying the luxury of two national skippers in fellow Welshman Alun Wyn Jones and Ireland’s Rory Best to support him. They also have smart halves and penetrative backs like George North, Jonathan Davies and Liam Williams who troubled the All Blacks during Wales’ unsuccessful tour here last year. Add to that champion goalkickers Owen Farrell, Dan Biggar, Jonny Sexton and Leigh Halfpenny who are far more accurate than our best. While Sexton performed well in both the Chicago win and Dublin loss against the All Blacks last year, England’s Farrell is likely to be the first-five choice to mark Barrett. These Lions will be better than Wales were and much better than

Fans already lining up to watch world’s best LPGA golfers T
he world’s best female golfers will be playing in our backyard later this year. The first LPGA event in this country, featuring New Zealand’s world number oneranked Lydia Ko, will take place at the newly-developed Windross Farm Golf Course in Ardmore from September 28 to October 1. Organisers of the Mckayson New Zealand Women’s Open have limited the season passes to 5000 in order to “ensure the maximum fan experience at the tournament”. More than half of passes has already been scooped up, says tournament director, Michael Goldstein. “This is the first time that the world’s biggest women’s golf tour has come to our backyard,” says Goldstein. “This tour is developing into a truly global one which has been popular because these women put on a real show.
“We want those who come to enjoy a special experience to watch the world’s best players and also to enjoy all of the other fan-engagement activities that we are planning.” Goldstein said the organisers wanted to ensure the ticket prices were affordable for all, with the four-day season pass set at $99. Single day passes are also on sale with daily entry of $39 for Thursday and Friday and $49 per day for Saturday and Sunday. Goldstein says they wanted to create at this event that appealed not only to golf fans and sports fans but corporate and women’s organisations who can use it as an opportunity to network and watch the world’s best female golfers in action. Bringing the LPGA event has taken dedication and planning. “It’s been a vision of mine which started over two years ago while I was living

the outset I was really keen to make this a reality. And he had Ko’s support from the outset. “She’s been a huge contributor for this
from day one,” says Goldstein. “She’s been helping us talk to some big names.” Goldstein, who returned to NZ andd lives in Auckland city, can’t reveal just yet which international players will be competing. He says an announcement is likely to be made in the next month once he has completed a scouting trip to coincide with an LPGA event in Dallas this weekend. He paid tribute to the Pakuranga Golf Club which has provided support through a number of volunteers. “It’s very exciting...it’s about capturing some of that magic Lydia brings to her game – even during this relatively quiet time in the past six months. “She continues to capture the nation’s interest with her success”. ➤ For more information visit www.nzwomensopen.com
