Since December 2011 Hugh Green group has developed 500 properties in Donegal Glen adjoining Murphy’s Bush, and 500 more properties are planned.

It was only last year the last stable in Flat Bush was taken down, a final reminder of the horse studs and dairy farms that made up Flat Bush 20 years ago.

The Donegal Glen development will follow Hugh Green Group’s detached housing model, and space has been allocated for a childcare facility and two parks said Pat Gavaghan, the property and development manager for Hugh Green Group.

The land developing company is making an effort to maintain all original water ways and streams in the developing areas, and are planting strips around them for future protection.

“We think our development is very considerate to the environment, “said Pat. The future for Flat Bush is set to include a McDonald’s fast food outlet on Ormiston Road, new playgrounds, a library, an aquatic centre as well as more cycle and walk ways.

Murphy’s Bush, which has made headlines in recent years because of gay sexual activity at the family spot, is also set to be developed.

The bush will stay, but there will be walkways and cycle ways put through, making it more open and accessible for the public.

Public transport is also set to increase, with Auckland Council working on a better bus system for the area.

There are also upgrades planned to Murphy’s Road in the hope of decreasing the time it takes to commute to the city.

“More and more people are having to change their work hours to avoid the traffic,” said Pat. Flat Bush has become a highly sought-after area, and has been

“It’s a low risk area for development.”

The New Zealand Housing Foundation will also be building four homes off Thomas Road. These homes are designed for working families with two or more children who are renting, and can’t afford to buy their own home.

Section sizes have changed over the years, from 600-800 square metres down to 380 square metres, and Pat said they are keeping on trend with this.

“We do need to adapt for the unitary plan as more plans are for high density.”

They do not plan on designing sections for apartments.

Sections selling currently are for stages eight, nine, and eleven. Of the 179 sections in these stages, 93 are left for purchase. They range from 260m2 to 1072m2, and start off at $545,000.

A report by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said that the average cost to then build a house in Auckland is $2000-$2500 per square meter, plus GST. The only trouble Hugh Green Group has faced during development has been dealing with Auckland Council and getting consent, said Pat. “It’s definitely a skill, you’ve got to have patience.”

They can only work on the land from October to July, so the time it takes to get consent from council can force that time frame to be even tighter.

“The land zoned last year should have been zoned long ago.”

In the last few years though, Pat said that the council has become more open and efficient at releasing land.

Digging up farmland for years has revealed some secrets, but Hugh Green Group is remaining tight lipped on what these secrets are.

“There’s history we can’t even report on,” said Pat. Hugh Green Group is already planning its next move, looking at developments in Pakuranga, Clevedon and Drury.

This is the third time in a row that Ormiston College has won the Dragons’ Den. Pakuranga College team ScrapCycle took second place at the Auckland Regional Dragons’ Den finals.

henomenal’ is how team Festivilia from Ormiston Senior College describes winning the Auckland Regional Dragons’ Den showdown— a key event in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).

More than 300 secondary schools took part in the Dragons’ Den contest at Auckland University of Technology last week.

The YES programme pushes the next generation of business leaders to go beyond the classroom and develop business skills by setting up a real business, marketing it and pitching for investment to the judges.

The team behind Festivilia worked on a glossy children’s book titled a Year of Festivals.

“There is no time to celebrate or rest after the win,” the team says.

Having sold 180 books to 10 local schools, clocking up more than 30,000 hits on Facebook and participated in the family expo Kids Fair and the Scholastic Book Fair, the team now wants to ensure that every school, bookshops, library and online retailer has copies of the book.

Illustrated by students Paula Alontave and Angela Wong, the book traces Bloop’s exciting adventure on earth as he learns about the diverse cultures that New Zealand celebrates.

The team took the initiative of asking Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy to write the foreword.

More fruit needed out of eastern area

Agnew a finalist for junior book award

Volunteer organisation Community Fruit Harvesting is struggling in east Auckland, despite its popularity in other areas of Auckland.

Moana Rimoni is the area co-ordinator for Botany, Pakuranga and Howick, and is desperate for more active volunteers.

“I have a list of 20 - only five are active,” said Moana.

Moana often goes out picking fruit with her daughters Olivia, 3, and Hannah, 1, and encourages other young families to join in.

“It’s ensuring fruit doesn’t go to waste, making the most of resources available to use, and helping those who are less fortunate,” said Moana.

There may not be many orchards in our community, but plenty of people have fruit trees in their backyards that they could donate excess fruit from.

“Anything is appreciated, it doesn’t have to be picking.”

She acknowledges that the volunteering can be sporadic in timing, but it is flexible and is a chance to meet people.

“If you’re willing to travel to go on big picks, you meet people with the same ideas.”

Moana joined while she was on maternity leave that could involve her family and give back to the community.

eonie Agnew is a finalist for the Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction for her latest book The Impossible Boy. The story is about six-year old Benjamin who is an orphan in a wartorn country, told from the point of view of his imaginary friend Vincent.

Leonie is surprised and grateful for her position as a finalist, a place she never would have imagined herself in years ago.

“If you told me I’d be a published author I’d be pleased, I wouldn’t believe you,” said Leonie.

She has been writing since she was a child, and remembers starting The Impossible Boy years ago.

She was upset about going to church on Christmas Eve with her parents, so she made a deal.

“In return (for going) I wanted a good idea for a story, the next day I had the idea.”

She also credits watching Peter Pan, and a movie based in Beirut before that evening for her inspiration.

Her goal is write a book that can be loved by generations.

“To write something that lasts, that resonates so strongly with children they want to pass it down to their children.”

Wily Winston a sure winner at local Grey Power gathering ■■By Kelly Teed

inston Peters gave an impassioned speech at the Grey Power Annual General Meeting held at Pakuranga Bowling Club recently.

A large crowd gathered to hear the NZ First leader speak on issues such as housing, water ownership, climate change, immigration and the overall state of politics in New Zealand.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Winston Peters speech without a few sly digs slipped in throughout, and of that there was plenty. From calling the present parliamentary group “a bunch of morons”, to a dig at Maggie Barry and David Seymour and more.

“I have never seen politics in a state as bad as it is today,’ he said. That’s a bold statement from someone who’s spent 42 years in the business.

“I have never seen such lowering standards of deceit and organised spin passing for substance and policy as I’ve seen today.”

He began with the current topic dominating New Zealand politics – the Todd Barclay tapes scandal.

The Clutha-Southland MP said he would stand down at the general election after allegations surfaced of him having illegally recorded a conversation of one of his staffers

criticising him. As we all learnt from the Bradley Ambrose and John Banks Teapot Tapes saga of 2011, recording a conversation you are not a party to is a crime – although apparently more of a crime then than the National Party would say it is six years later when the shoe is on the other foot.

Mr Peters said the latest scandal was “at best naive; at worst, plain illegal” and made even worse by lies told by Mr Barclay, Prime Minister Bill English and others in the National Party.

He said there used to be a certain standard of behaviour required by people in positions of authority – and those standards weren’t always being met anymore.

“Say what you like about [Sir Robert] Muldoon, [Sir Keith] Holyoake and the rest but they were nothing compared to how politicians are today” he said.

As he moved onto senior’s issues, Mr Peters told of how behind closed doors, “you will never hear National defend [NZ] Super,” and accused both National and Labour of flipflopping on the issue.

“Only [NZ First] has stood firmly behind NZ Super and has been unbending in its stand.”

He drew applause from the crowd on the topic of the SuperGold Card and how “we could be doing so much better if [National] got behind

Mr Peters accused Minister for Seniors, Maggie Barry of “pretending to be a friend” to the seniors and said she “expounded the virtues of the SuperGold Card which her own party has tried to undermine from the day it was first proposed”.

These claims were “blatantly false” and another “great example of arrogance,” he said. Not one to shy away from the hard issues, Mr Peters drew yet more loud applause

as he made his case against immigration and raised the concern of substandard construction and political oversight of low quality materials being used.

The floor was opened up for a question and answer session – and it was quickly off to a rusty start.

“Do you have someone to groom as successor to the ACT Party?” someone asked as confused looks were exchanged around the room.

The NZ First leader didn’t miss a beat.

“If I did, it would be a rabbit,” he said.

As the microphone was passed around all corners of the room, Mr Peters easily fielded questions on climate change, homelessness and foreign investors before being riled by someone asking if he would consider abolishing Maori electorates.

“Who did you vote for?” the politician demanded.

“Well last time I voted for the Conservatives but this time I was going to vote for you.”

“You didn’t even give me your vote and you want me to do things for you? You voted for some lunatic [Colin] Craig?” said the feisty politician, choosing to ignore the last part of the sentence.

Luckily, it did pick up from there.

There was laughter and lots of approving nods and quiet words of agreement and a whole lot of passion being flung around the room as the Grey Power community got to raise the issues that matter most to them.

And then suddenly time was up.

Mr Peters was ushered out of the room to one final round of applause and even a partial standing ovation by some of the captive audience.

And by looking at the ear-to-ear grin on the wily politician’s face, you get the feeling the affection was mutual.

he’s one of two local authors nominated in the 2017 Children and Young Adults Book Awards, and Jennifer Beck is taking it all in her stride.

It’s an honour just to be shortlisted as a finalist in the Estern Glen Award for Junior Fiction, said the long-time Botany resident – clearly downplaying the fact that she’s won (and been a finalist in) many competitions prior to this.

She’s written somewhere between 50 and 60 books altogether, estimated Jennifer, as well as newspaper articles and educational readers.

In 2010, Jennifer represented New Zealand at the International Children’s Book Festival.

Five years later, she was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Children’s Literature, and took up the position of Children’s Writer in Residence at Otago University.

She’s an outstanding author with a knack for taking a story and turning it into something

greater, but writing wasn’t always her first choice career plan.

In her younger years, Jennifer completed a university degree in psychology, and worked in educational psychology for a number of years.

“I was a late starter when it comes to writing,” Jennifer admits.

“It wasn’t a definite plan – I just loved creating pictures and stories, especially when I had my own children and could make books for them. It is the combination of art and words that are special to me. That is why I love writing picture books.”

Now, she’s been doing it for almost 30 years, and can’t imagine the day she’ll give up her precious creative outlet.

ROSS REPORT TACKLING PROBLEM WINDOW WASHERS Last week I had the rare chance to be at the other end of the select committee table as I submitted to the Transport & Industrial Relations Committee on the member’s bill I am sponsoring.

The draft law change proposes to give Police the power to fine and move problem window washers on from busy intersections where they are causing problems.

Window washing has been a long running problem in parts of Auckland where window washers have been threatening or intimidating members of the public. They pose a safety risk to the public where they operate, as well as to themselves. There have been many reports of attacks and antisocial behaviour that has taken place, and a window washer was even hit by a vehicle in Manukau last month.

Police to take action.

Once passed, the Bill will give New Zealand Police the power to move window washers on from problem intersections where they are causing a safety hazard on the road. Police tell me this will be an effective tool to allow them to prevent crime from happening, and keep the public safe.

I look forward to the Bill gaining support as it progresses through the Parliament.

Although nothing will beat an investment of more Police on the street, improvements like more tasers and mobile devices, as well as new public safety orders and family violence intervention programmes, mean that Counties Manukau Police are able to do a better job at keeping our community safe.

Board throws Uxbridge a lifeline

hree months after the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre made a desperate plea for help to stay afloat, the Howick Local Board has agreed to a one-off $35,000 funding grant. It also agreed to an operational review costing $30,000.

The Times reported on March 30 that the newly-renovated Uxbridge centre faced the prospect of closing for good if it didn’t receive additional funding from the Local Board.

In a March 20 presentation to the board, Uxbridge director Vickie Bowers and chairman of the Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated board Cliff Halsey outlined the necessity of an extra $100,000 per year in funding to continue operations.

They also requested an extra $35,000 if Uxbridge is required to pay water and electricity charges – a cost the centre was not responsible for prior to the $6.5 million renovations of the facility in 2016, mostly funded by Auckland Council.

Ms Bowers estimated that without extra funding, Uxbridge would only be able to operate for another year before it would be forced to close the doors.

Uxbridge has been an entertainment hub for the Howick Village for 35 years.

The Howick Local Board recently agreed to a proposal to fund a strategic review (to the tune of $30,000 taken from various budgets) of Uxbridge Arts and Culture to assist with forward planning and to “ensure its ongoing success in delivering council’s arts and culture programmes in the Howick area”.

It also agreed to make a one-off $35,000 grant to Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated to cover its utility costs for the 2017/2018 financial year.

Each child’s Individual Development Plan strengthens their interests, wellbeing and learning.

“Uxbridge has done a fantastic job fostering arts and culture in Howick for more than 30 years and we want to see them to continue to succeed,” said Howick Local Board member and its arts, culture and community portfolio lead, Katrina Bungard via a media release.

“The strategic review, which will include engagement with the community and the Howick Local Board, will be done by an independent person and take a look at the whole operation from what programmes are on offer, what’s working well and opportunities for development.”

The review will then provide Uxbridge with some recommendations so it can meet the expectations of the community, and its contract with Auckland Council, in delivering a range of arts and cultural opportunities.

Under Auckland Council’s new community leasing policy the organisation is responsible for maintenance and utility costs, such as water and power. In the past, these were paid by council.

“That policy change was

unexpected and significantly increased our operating costs,” says centre director Ms Bowers.

“Our funding from council for 2016/17 is $306,612 and enables us to deliver 250 courses, 52 events and 20 programmes in the Malcolm Smith Gallery. We work on a very tight budget.”

They welcomed the local board’s proposal. An independent person would be able to stand back and take a fresh look at the organisation to determine where improvements and/or savings could be made.

“They will determine whether our programmes are meeting the expectations of the community and the extent to which we are fulfilling our contract with council,” Ms Bowers says.

“Certainly, knowing that the utility costs are covered for this first year gives everyone a bit of breathing space.”

Auckland Council arts and culture manager Richard McWha says council will also look to address some of Uxbridge’s other concerns around heating, air conditioning and acoustics in the recently refurbished building.

to be constructed and built as quickly as possible, so we developed the Roads of National Significance programme.

The Waterview Tunnel. which opened to traffic on Sunday, will open to traffic shortly, in the biggest change to Auckland’s transport system since the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1959. It is the final link in the $2.4b Western Ring Route – one of the Government’s seven Roads of National Significance.

The Western Ring Route is a 48 kilometre motorway alternative to State Highway 1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, bypassing the city to the west. It

will also help people get to and from the airport. It is expected to produce wider economic benefits worth $430 million, through improved productivity and reduced travel time, and create more than 18,000 jobs.

There are significant transport projects under way right across New Zealand. For us locally, the East West Link and the AMETI projects are going to be vitally important. The main parts of the East West Link are going through a consenting process at the moment, and the Panmure to Pakuranga busway as part of AMETI will see construction commence next year. This will be followed by the Reeves Road Flyover and busway to Botany.

As a small, exporting nation, New Zealand relies on a robust transport network to move people, goods, and services safely and efficiently. This is what we are working hard to achieve and keep New Zealand moving and growing.

ifty students took to Flat Bush recently, in an effort to clean up the area.

The students from Tyndale Park Christian School and Hamilton Christian School were surprised at the amount of rubbish they collected.

In the 40 minutes they were out, they filled an estimated 30 white shopping bags with rubbish.

Principal of Tyndale Park Christian School Barend Blom wanted to use this as an opportunity to teach the values of service and to give back to the community.

“Tyndale Park Christian School also wants neighbours to know that we love being part of this neighbourhood and that we want to do our part to ensure Flat Bush is a great place to live,” said Blom.

This is not the last time they will be doing a cleanup either; Blom is already planning what to do next.

“An interesting next step will be to do some research on why trash is ending up on our sidewalks and gutters to help council come up with a solution that will enable us have a cleaner neighbourhood.”

mile at the students when they come in; ask them how their weekend was and be more engaging and develop a deeper appreciation for performing arts.

These are some of the guidelines Year 13 student Camron Smith put to staff when she was principal for the day at Pakuranga College.

Camron traded seats with school principal Michael Williams who attended classes.

Monday morning for the feisty 17-year-old student was packed with a line-up of meetings, conducting the school assembly and even fitting in an interview the Times.

“I was in school by 7.40am, an hour before everyone,” says the youngster. “I had meetings with the deputy principals and other staff on what lessons to take.

“I had a staff briefing at 8:15am where I told staff that I’d like for them, for one day, to focus on producing a more engaging classroom environment working on the positive student-teacher relationships as I said ‘After four and a half years of extensive research having a teacher that you feel genuinely cares about you and your progress boosts one’s self esteem and motivation to work harder.”

Camron suggested activities so that the students were more awake in the morning.

“We are half way through the year and it’s cold and gloomy, making it difficult for students to focus.”

She says planning the school assembly involved three meetings with head students and Mr Williams.

“At the assembly, the Year 10 leaders spoke as head students.

However, we finished earlier than usual and had some time on our hands but we managed,” she laughs.

She noticed that Mr Williams, as a student, didn’t quite start his day on the right foot.

“He did a bit of skipping as warmup for the drama class and hurt a muscle.”

She says she enjoyed handing out certificates to students during the day and sitting in at the back of the classroom to do some observation.

“I will be sitting in a Year 12 Maths class to give feedback on how new

teachers interact with students.”

One-on-one with deputy principals and the appraiser from the Board of Trustees who reminds the principal of the school goals, makes an inquiry and writes a report at the end of the year – was all a part of the day’s job.

Being principal for the day is a yearly event run by the Academic Council with an application process.

The exchange involved Year 13 head students attending the Year 10 classes while the leaders of Year 10 attended the Year 13 physics class, which they found tough to follow.

“I also had these Year 10 art students come up to me saying ‘Hi miss, do you know what a ‘dab’ is?’

And I thought gosh do I really look

that old!

“So after telling them I was a student, and I was the acting principal for the day, they photographed me doing a ‘dab’... that was probably the funniest part of the day, junior students not recognising that I was actually a student at the school and calling me ‘Miss’ “ she laughs.

However, the biggest eye-opener for Camron was the amount of work that goes on behind-the-scenes.

“The principal does so much more work than meets the eye,” she says.

“I have a deeper appreciation for the principal and his job because it is not an easy one. Students only get to see a fraction of what really

goes on in the school.”

Camron quickly learnt that a principal’s day is action-packed and time management is key!

“Being on time for a meeting with the principal is also vital as he has a lot of other things to achieve in his day,” she says.

“Speeches, speeches and more speeches also constitute a principal’s life, so always being aware of your goals, progress, and audience is key to delivering an impactful message. Every few minutes there is someone popping in his room to talk to him. I had at least 15 people come in wanting to discuss something with him.

“I’d say to them, ‘he’s not here but you can talk to me’.”

The influential educator will also be lecturing in Dunedin in September, Fiji in October and has been invited to speak at the Annual World Congress of Oral and Dental Medicine 2017 happening in Singapore in November.

Five-and-a-half years ago, they made their first home in Reeves Road, Pakuranga, and became enamoured with the area. Three months ago they were delighted to find their current premises sandwiched between the St Mark’s Catholic Church property and St Kentigern College on the other side – plenty of scope to make happy music without disturbing neighbours.

The business, WE Classical, is three-pronged. The couple, along with four other specialist teachers, teach students a range of Chinese musical instruments and, Mr Yu says, they are hoping to attract more Kiwi European students as well as Chinese.

“We would like to do small concerts here at our studio with teachers and students, mixing up the Chinese instruments with piano,” he says.

As well as offering a full array of instruments for sale, Mr Yu is also a piano tuner.

“I started to learn music with the yangquin when I was nine,” he says. “As I grew older I found that the sequence of 200 strings was similar to the piano and so I took up piano tuning.

“I am a person who takes great enjoyment being this close to the instruments here,” he says.

“I can tune pianos, teach and practice my own music all from this base. It’s what I enjoy and it makes our lives very colourful.”

hinese musician William Yu has found his magical place surrounded by a plethora of traditional instruments in the new premises he and his wife Tanya Li have turned into a musical emporium in Pakuranga Road.

In fact, he says: I don’t want to go home some times because I enjoy the environment so much”.

The two professional musicians came to Auckland from China in 2004 and opened their first music shop on the corner of Market Road and Great South Road – joining local musical specialists Lewis Eady who operated their business across the road.

Mr Yu is an exponent of the yangquin, a Chinese hammered dulcimer and Ms Li, the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese lute.

They are high profile musicians, called upon by a variety of organisations from the APO (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra) to the Wellington Jazz Music Festival in 2006.

They have made recordings contributing a special Chinese flavour, for example for the Murray McNabb Group’s Astral Surfers CD and as part of the New Fusion Orchestra which involves eight soloists dedicated to revitalising traditional Chinese folk music in a fusion of Eastern

Recycling

Bright smiles, bright futures Colgate and TerraCycle are calling all primary schools in New Zealand to take part in the 2017 Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures (BSBF) recycling competition.

The BSBF programme aims to educate children on good oral care habits and also includes information on how to help the environment through recycling – all while offering schools the chance to win a $1000 cash prize and a recycled park bench made of actual oral care waste.

Accepted items include toothbrushes, toothpaste

tubes and caps, floss containers and outer packaging, which are recycled into sustainable products such as the park bench being awarded in the competition. The competition is part of Colgate Oral Care Recycling Programme, which is a joint initiative between recycling company TerraCycle and ColgatePalmolive that allows New Zealand schools to recycle their oral care waste for free through New Zealand Post.

For every used oral care item collected, a donation of two cents will be made to the

participating school. Colgate will also award $1000 and a recycled park bench customised with the kids’ drawings to the school that has registered to receive BSBF education kits and sends in the most oral care waste before November 1. The programme DVD shows mascot, Dr. Rabbit, and the Tooth Defenders encouraging children to save “Tooth City” from the evil villain, Placulus, by adopting healthy habits such as brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and limiting the frequency of snacking.

Get plunderers onto rodents

I have read numerous letters in your newspaper from concerned residents regarding the depletion of shellfish from the beach in east Auckland.

It would be nice to think that when these gatherers have completely wiped out the shellfish and crustaceans from our coasts, they would turn their sights inland and start on the eradication of rabbits and opossums.

On April 11, I notified Auckland Council of moth plant growing within a tree on the berm of Bunker Rise, Golflands. I attached a photograph to my notification.

Recent Auckland Council mailers had warned us that moth plant is a noxious weed, and a prolific breeder, and should be destroyed.After some time, I had a call from a council employee, who was at the site, advising me that this was an Auckland Transport matter because the tree

In the absence of any progress, I chased it up with Auckland Transport some weeks later.

Eventually, I received notification from Auckland Transport that this is an Auckland Council matter, and so I referred it back to Auckland Council.

Now I have received the following advice from Auckland Council: “Where moth plant is found on council property, council has no legal obligation to remove moth plant as it is a surveillance pest plant, except in the containment

What is the Local Board thinking?

I am a homeowner, my rates demand is $4000 per year and then there’s water rates on top of that.

The people who wish to use the pool should be the ones that pay i.e. user pays.

We, like thousands around Howick, will never use them and resent being told by bureaucrats that we should subsidise the ones who do.

Rates around here are well over the top now. Voting comes around

I gasped when I read that David Collings wants to make the Lloyd Elsmore Pools free to those who use them and levy every ratepayer in the Howick Ward.

As a frequent user of the pools I am more than happy to pay my way and certainly do not expect ratepayers who don’t use the pool to subsidise me.

Aren’t Auckland Council rorting enough money out of ratepayers who aren’t getting full value for their rates as it is?

We have poor quality roading.

Where once there were lovely

gardens planted - nothing now.

Rubbish lying around the streets, drains blocked with the autumn leaves and plastic because the road sweeper doesn’t come around often enough.

Water mains bursting regularly in the street where I live because they’re so old and decrepit.

Pakuranga Heights in particular seems to have been forgotten because of their ‘big’ plans for the Plaza - meanwhile the streets where the people actually live - are being left untidy and unkempt. Are other Pakuranga residents as sick and tired of this as I am?

It seems to me that the Board would be better representing the district by lobbying for essential work and services to be maintained and for our rates to be spent wisely where they are needed most - not by levying the ratepayers for nonessentials.

The Board may say that roading, water and rubbish collection is above their jurisdiction, but the fact is, they were voted onto the Board to represent the residents and they should be lobbying council on our behalf instead of coming up with half-baked ideas to wrought more money out of ratepayers.

I want to thank Peter Young for speaking up publicly about this and making residents more aware of the thinking on this Board. As he says, you have to read the fine print.

We all know that this is how Councils get things like this through - and the next thing you know we’re stuck with this payment and there’s not a thing we can do to change it.

Tweeting their song

Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there to capture the splendid feathered creatures at the Auckland Metro Bird Club.

Ormiston Senior College was filled with tweets and bird song as the Auckland Metro Bird Club hosted its 108th show last weekend. With 540 birds on display and lots of young families walking in through the door, Dave Nicholson, president of Australasia’s oldest bird club was happy to see 10 new members sign in at the bird show. The Pet Bird category had young ones walk in with their feathered friends perched on their shoulder. They were all presented with a five kilo seed voucher.

As the best canaries, budgies, finches, parrots and parakeets strutted their stuff; nine of the 15 sections were won by local members. Now some of the birds will go for a greater honour at the Nationals to be held in Christchurch from July 20-23.

The proud breeder of a champion Lizard canary and Gloster canary, Dave says that the next year’s bird show will be held at the same venue which is both modern and well lit up.

SCIENCE TECHNICIAN

Botany Downs Secondary College is currently recruiting for a Science Technician who is required for 17 hours per week, term time only. The days of work are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday however in times of a heavy workload there may be some variation by negotiation.

Reporting to the Head of Learning Science, the key responsibilities of the Science Technician are: - to provide preparation support to Science staff for practical lessons; - assist in the management of Science laboratory and resources - provide administrative and technical support to the Head of Learning and Science teaching staff As part of the Science Department, and one of three Science Technicians, we will require the applicant to have initiative, good communication skills – both written and verbal, and a high level of attention to detail. We require the applicant to have an interest in Science and the ability to work in a positive and motivated manner, as part of a busy and dynamic team.
