TIMES BOTANY BY-ELECTION DEBATE

veryone likes a good debate. The Times Botany by-election debate held at the Botany Library on Friday evening at 6.30pm, served its purpose. It provided a perfect platform for the local electorate to hear, observe, question, probe and make an informed decision about the seven candidates standing for the local by-election. The idea behind taking

the initiative of hosting a public forum was to shake the disenchanted out of their apathy for voting, often cited as a cause for low voter turnout. Going by the encouraging turnout at Botany Library, we could see a lot more people voting. It was heartening to see people take time out on a busy Friday evening before a long weekend to interact with those who could be representing them on the Howick Local Board. The Botany subdivision that

encompasses Flat Bush, East Tamaki, East Tamaki Heights and Ormiston areas had the lowest voter turnout of the three Howick Ward subdivisions. Voter turnout for the October election in the Botany subdivision was a dismal 36.9 per cent. The Botany by-election was triggered by the resignation of the newly sworn-in local board member Lucy Schwaner. The byelection is expected to cost the taxpayer up to $104,000.

owick and Pakuranga Times is celebrating its 45th birthday, prompting me to reflect on what it has meant to be the publisher of such a long-standing local newspaper. My first thought is that we wouldn’t have made it without a dedicated team, loyal advertisers and our die-hard readers. But, looking back, what changes I have seen. While we can all focus on the huge population spurt of recent years, I remember the 70s as another time of growth when Bucklands Beach, Highland Park and Howick burgeoned. Bucklands Beach peninsula was being subdivided, The Prince Regent side of Half Moon Bay was set for development and Neil Housing was buying up the land that is now Highland Park. From that point, traffic on the Pakuranga Highway became super busy and went on to become busier and busier. The

problem? Lots of houses and just one road in and out. Although there is now a loop route from Ti Rakau Drive to Botany and Chapel Roads, the highway remains as busy as ever. The area had always been a boating paradise but when Half Moon Bay was being developed only those with real foresight bought a marina berth. The thinking was, ‘why use a marina when moorings in the Tamaki Estuary were just fine?’ Look at the marina now and also that at Pine Harbour. In the 70s there was only Beachlands and no Pine Harbour. We had friends living on the water at Maraetai. There were few residential homes, mostly baches and I recall feeling sorry they lived so far out in the sticks. How things have changed! Look at Beachlands, Pine Harbour and Maraetai now – expanding at a rapid rate as is the wider district all the way to the developing Ormiston Town. It really has been a privilege to be part of this community for 45

years, to experience the lows and highs that have brought about its success. I was here when Howick had its own borough council and its own mayor. I experienced the growth of Manukau City Council when Auckland had four city councils and I’ve now watched the amalgamation of those councils and formation of a new SuperCity. I’ve known several mayors, seen Howick Village become a vibrant mainstreet and watched the birth of the Highland Park Shopping Centre, Pakuranga Plaza, Meadowlands and Botany Town Centre. I’ve seen the farmland disappear, the development of Lloyd Elsmore Park and new schools emerge. The best part has been the people I’ve met and who still stay in touch – many of them past staff. As Auckland celebrates 177 years, and Howick its 170th anniversary, our celebration may seem less auspicious but it’s been an exciting 45 years and now it’s onward towards our 50th in five years time.

Candidates debate issues ➤➤From page 1 Friday’s debate began with Times reporter and master of ceremonies, Scott Yeoman, giving candidates a minute each to introduce themselves. The candidates – Mike Turinsky, Nivedita Sharma Vij, Julie Patterson, Kuan Yap, Mark Johnson, Ailian Su and Malcolm Page - were then given an opportunity to talk about a major issue or challenge facing the Botany subdivision. “Fastest growing suburb with traffic congestion, increased crime, parking problems and a community of people who don’t feel connected. We have a chance to get it right this time,” said Mr Turinsky, CEO of Young Life New Zealand Trust in East Auckland. Labour candidate Mark Johnson said the city is changing technologically and with it, the infrastructure needs to change. “The challenge is better transport with better economic opportunities,” he said. “We also need Botany subdivision to have its identity and host its own community events, like having a Santa Parade in Botany.” Independent candidate Mrs Vij felt “lack of connectivity” is a major issue, while former Auckland Council employee Mr Page said “growth is going to be a challenge.” Ex-cop Mrs Patterson said “working on wider and safer roads to get rid of traffic jams on motorways is an issue that needs to be resolved.” Talking about the challenges they think the Howick Local Board will face in trying to resolve issues in the area, Mr Yap highlighted budgetary constraints. In terms of solutions to resolve pressing problems facing the area, Mrs Su suggested “bus shuttle services and better parking facilities at major train stations and bus stops would help ease traffic congestion”. It was interesting to watch candidates trying to elbow their

way in, and in the process giving the spectators a glimpse of their individual personalities. While some seasoned candidates were used to addressing public forums, one of them later admitted that being pitted against each other and being put in a time slot was nerve-racking. And then there were those who, despite being new to the game, were enthused about being given a chance to speak and found it hard to stop talking. The keen audience also had a sprinkling of Howick Local Board members like David Collings, Katrina Bungard, John Spiller and Peter Young as well

Local board should be reaching out to students ■■By Laura Brookes

He turned up to the Times Botany byelection debate on Friday night, ready to listen, and too young to vote. Dressed in his Pakuranga College school uniform, year 12 student Te Haua Taua was seated in the crowd with high expectations for what the night would bring. The 15-year-old student, who heard about the debate on Facebook, said he’s “interested in that kind of stuff”. Despite being too young to vote, and not living in the Botany electorate area, the Highland Park resident wanted to meet the candidates in person. “It’s about trying to get that connection,” he said. “Before the debate, I only really knew one of them. I didn’t know the others.” He thinks the candidates could have done a better job on the night, too. “It was interesting to meet them,” he said, “but I thought they could have sold themselves better... especially in their introductions.” Te Haua has attended Pakuranga College since year 10 after moving from Waiheke High School, and wasted no time getting involved in co-curricular activities when he arrived – particularly in Maori leadership development, sports, and helping out with the school debating team. He believes engagement is the key to improving youth involvement and interest in local politics, and said the local board has an important role to play in that process. “Our school in particular has a lot of potential but students need to get a boost... when I first got here, I didn’t know anyone, but it was the boost that got candidates an opportunity to as community leaders like David me involved. take a stand. CELEBRATION

A very happy 45th birthday to the Times Former Times reporter Marianne Kelly offers her personal recollections Regional immigrants to Auckland, as I was in the early 70s, will remember their first visit to Howick village through the country paddocks of Pakuranga on a narrow two-lane concrete road. These days, as I cover wellworn tracks, my thoughts often drift to the way places or landmarks looked then compared with now. Brought up on a Taranaki farm, my choice of route to the Auckland CBD from Howick was frequently through the farms of Chapel Road; via an intersection with East Tamaki Road, now wiped out by the East Tamaki Central Arterial route established in 1998. The farms are long gone, taken over by Botany Town Centre and the ever advancing rumble of Flat Bush housing. In 1974 our small Times team ran a major feature on the opening of the new Tamaki River Bridge running from Ti Rakau Drive to the Waipuna Road side of the estuary. Now as I drive over it I remember the day we locals joined the Italian contractors, New Zealand Government bureaucrats and other dignatories in a leisurely walk over the much longed-for alternative route across the river. It was big news for us when Hieber Construction announced it would build Howickville, always known as “the Hieber building”. Yes, the same building that became a green monstrosity before it was redeveloped into the swanky apartments and retail outlets of The Terraces in Fencible Drive. Equally exciting was the Marine Hotel’s change of name to The Prospect of Howick in 1977, including the introduction of a new

flash style of dining at Major Percival Peacocke’s restaurant. With the arrival of current proprietor Barry O’Shaughnessy, the establishment morphed into GBS and now The Good Home. But it’s always good to know the old Marine’s legacy has been preserved to an extent in Bosun’s Bar, one of the few pub bars in Auckland these days where tradies can wear their work boots. Those early days of civic leadership were dominated by the Howick Borough Council (HBC) and Councillor Morrin Cooper who became the Mayor and in the early days was a frequent visitor to the Times offices upstairs in Rices’ Mall. While he bowed out in 1989 when HBC was absorbed by Manukau City Council, to this day he’s known as “Howick’s popular Mayor”. I have two sentimental sites that I wrote about which have been changed forever by the unstoppable developers’ march through Flat Bush. The Tudor Park horse stud

in Somerville Road, given the name of Ramona by new owners in 1979, was sold for housing in 1997. When I drive by I remember that it was the home of Taipan II who, in 1974, I reported for the Times was New Zealand’s third leading thoroughbred sire. Also Carlyle Stud in Ormiston Road, sold for residential property development in 2009. My memories are of Carlyle’s remarkable thoroughbred sire Zamazaan who died in 1990. When I wrote about the loss of the property my heart filled with sadness to look at his burial site under an oak tree on Ormiston Road. We wondered whether his grave would also disappear under the bulldozers. But while there are moments to quietly reflect on the way it was, there is also room for triumph. No more than when in May 2010, the Times took its “Our Place Our Name” petition to the steps of Parliament where the name for the new Auckland SuperCity ward in the south-east was changed to “Howick” from “Te Irirangi”.

Dame Valerie steps up for Q&A Six local figures were recognised in the New Year’s Honours list. Olympian and World Champion shot-putter Valerie Adams was made a Dame. Triathlete Cameron Brown, health services proponent Ranjna Patel, and shareholders’ advocate Bruce Sheppard were appointed Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit, while former hockey international Katie Glynn and table tennis champion Chunli Li were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The Times has been publishing a profile of each recipient and featuring a short Q&A over the past few weeks.

both on the field for my sport, but also off the field. ➤➤Q. Does receiving this award change anything for you, does it push you to strive for more? A. Not really. I’m very focused on my next goals. I also want to keep helping communities like I have, try to do more of this and I especially want to try to continue to inspire people to get out there, believe and live healthy lives. ➤➤Q. How did you celebrate the announcement? A. I had a small gathering of special friends and family round home on New Year’s Eve. It was really nice, and a special New Year’s Eve. ➤➤Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received and how did you take it on board? A. Believe in yourself, set goals and work really hard to achieve them. Be passionate, have fun and embrace the support from your friends and family.

rime Minister Bill English has announced a greater investment into New Zealand Police in the next four years. The new $503 million dollar Safer Communities package will be primarily based on targeting and catching offenders, preventing crime and reducing victimisation, and delivering a more responsive police service. It includes a significant focus on increasing police attendance at home burglaries, seizing more assets from organised crime, reducing deaths from family violence and reducing reoffending by Maori. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said although it will not be easy to meet all of the targets, the police are “not here to shy away from the hard issues”. “Having more police on the streets will see crime reduce. We know from the big boost in justice and police funding at the start of the National government in 2008 that more resources do see crime steadily trend downwards. We don’t want to see overall crime rise again, so giving the police more resource is important. “The public have told us they want more effort put into law

and order, and now we are responding.” An additional 1100 police staff will be added as a result of the extra investment, which will increase the size of the police force by 10 per cent over the next four years. Mr Ross said he is hopeful the Counties Manukau district will receive a decent portion of this staffing increase, allowing it to continue the good work preventing crime in the Botany and Howick area. A new national 24/7 phone number for non-emergencies, more specialist investigators for child protection, sexual assault, family violence and other serious crime, as well as additional resources for the police are also included in the package. New Zealand Police Association president Chris Cahill said these extra resources will

make a valuable difference to the fight against crime. “This package shows the government has done its homework, and while ideally we would like the extra staff immediately, knowing that the cavalry is on its way will be a positive for police in making future plans,” he said. Police Commissioner Mike Bush said yesterday’s announcement by the Prime Minister represents a very significant and welcome investment in New Zealand Police, and hopes it will encourage prospective officers to consider joining the force. “Policing is an exciting and rewarding career, and I encourage all New Zealanders who have thought about becoming an officer to take a look at the difference you could make with us.”

mental health

Coming to grips with suicide The loss of two young children’s lives points to a ‘missing step’ in New Zealand’s counselling and mental health services, says the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). In recent weeks, two girls aged nine and 10 are believed to have taken their lives in unrelated incidents. Both deaths have been referred to the coroner for investigation. NZAC spokesperson and school guidance counsellor Sarah Maindonald says if Kiwis come to grips with suicide, then further tragic deaths can be prevented. “Many suicides, particularly those

of children, are preventable,” she says. “Counselling and robust pastoral care systems in primary, intermediate, and secondary schools can identify signs of psychological distress, depression and other risk factors which may signal a need for further intervention. “This is no judgment on any school or family, as suicide can be an impulsive decision, but one we must come to grips with as a nation so we can make systemic changes.” According to the provisional suicide figures released by the Coroner’s Office,

eight children aged 10-14 died by suicide in the year ending June 2016, compared to 10 in the same age group during the previous year. aising awareness of the benefits of school counsellors and resourcing these services adequately within the school community will help build safety nets for children and young people, Ms Maindonald says. She says further action will also promote a reduction in New Zealand’s youth suicide rate, which is consistently one of the highest in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Did you have difficulty hearing over the holidays? Howick residents are being given an opportunity to experience the very latest in European hearing technology, which helps the user cope with multiple speakers simultaneously in noisy environments. Focus Hearing is pleased to be able to help.Their Howick clinic at 12 Picton Street, Howick has this latest technology for you to come in and experience. “These hearing devices are based on a completely new paradigm. Traditionally, hearing aids have focused on one speaker, isolating all others, whereas the new technology opens a full soundscape to embrace multiple speakers and allows you to actively participate in conversations with more participants,” says audiologist Daniel Kim. “Its exceptionally fast processing speed scans the environment 100 times per second to distinguish speech from noise, making it possible to listen to multiple speakers in noisy environments, focus on what’s important to you, and switch attention if you want to. We are delighted with the huge benefits to our clients.” ”It is also the first hearing aid that connects to the internet, so you will be able to use it with a number of internet-enabled products and services. It also connects wirelessly with your smart phone and other devices for phone calls or to stream music direct to your hearing aids.

“We are very excited about this technology and invite you to make an appointment to come in and test them out, obligation-free,” he says.

Delivering personalised hearing care Focus Hearing provides a diverse range of services, including full diagnostic hearing evaluations, tinnitus assessment and therapy, and provision of high-quality hearing instruments to suit individual lifestyles and budgets. The clinic has authorised access to available third party funding schemes such as ACC, War Veterans, Government subsidy, medical insurance and Ministry of Health funding. All clients will be advised about any source of funding they may qualify for. “Audiology is a rapidly advancing field,” Daniel says. “To ensure we can offer our clients the best possible expertise and service, our clinicians keep up-to-date with the very latest in hearing research and technology by regularly attending training sessions, seminars, and conferences in New Zealand and Australia. Focus Hearing is an independent clinic. They are a small team, which means you see the same clinician each time you visit. They get to know you and your personal hearing care needs.

Do you want to know about the first hearing device that revolves around you?

Daniel Kim

Both Iris Shin and Daniel Kim have worked in public hospitals, Daniel at Greenlane Clinic Centre and Starship Childrens’ Hospital, and Iris at Manukau Super Clinic, so they are experienced in helping children, and adults with complex hearing issues.

Open Days invitation Open the door to a new world of hearing technology. Focus Hearing would like you to experience the advantages of this technology obligation-free, and invite you to book a FREE demonstration at one of their Open Days on Monday 6 or Tuesday 7 March. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential. To book your appointment phone (09) 533 6463 now. You don’t need a referral. Simply phone (09) 533 6463 for an appointment.

Your invitation to trial this new advanced technology at our Open Day Shopping centres, restaurants, meetings, and family get-togethers — these situations can all be hard to navigate when you have hearing loss. But they don’t have to be anymore. We call it a complex listening environment. You call it “socialising”. Finally there’s a hearing device that lets you hear what you want to hear, even in the most complex listening environments. It allows you to participate in multiple conversations, not just the one in front of you. Just like you used to. We’d like to tell you more about it.

Join us at one of our Open Days on Monday 6 or Tuesday 7 March and we’ll show you a new hearing aid that can make all of this easier.

To try it risk-free, Call (09) 533 6463 to book your appointment. Places are limited so call today.

Progress Automotive: No make or model is too big for them

H

as your local mechanics closed down? Have you recently moved into the area? Are you looking for a reliable and trustworthy place where you and your car will be treated like old friends?

Head down to Vincent Street in Howick where the fantastic team at Progress Automotive will take care of everything. They’ve been there for 23 years, and have been around Howick even longer. Mike was born and raised in Howick and has worked there since completing an apprenticeship in Newmarket. Their trustworthy reputation in the community is well-earned, and their competitive and friendly service makes it easy to see why people keep coming back for more. The closure of nearby Steward Motors late last year left many Cockle Bay and Howick residents without a mechanic, leaving a gaping hole in the community where it was a regular fixture for almost 60 years. Fortunately, John knew he could trust long-time locals Mike and Sandra with his loyal customer base.

Mike, Sandra and their team know the Howick community inside out, having all lived, schooled and worked in the area. They understand the importance of being able to trust your mechanic and the hesitancy of some customers to change after so many years with one business. But they’re confident people will grow to love them too. No matter what your mechanical need or knowledge, Progress Automotive will take care of it all. They offer a wide range of services, including Warrant of Fitness, electronic tuning, all mechanical repairs and low volume vehicle certification. No make or model is too big either; Progress Automotive can do it all. Open from 8am-5pm on weekdays and Saturday mornings from 8.30am until midday, there’s no issue finding time to take in your car for some well-deserved TLC from those who know just what to do. Progress Automotive, Vincent Street, Howick. Phone 534 8604.

Students welcome new principal ■■By Farida Master

T

uesday morning was the first day back at school for students at Bucklands Beach Primary School (BBPS), and the students had a lot of questions to ask the new principal Kelly Slater-Brown. “Where have you taught before?” “How many children do you have?” were some of the questions thrust at Mrs Brown. The school organised a formal welcome ceremony for the new head of the school, along with three new teachers Michael Grimmer, Lorna Foulger and Anushka Zaveri. A group of 18 Korean students from the Wonju Office of Education, in Wonju city, South Korea, visiting BBPS for three weeks were also made to feel at home as the Korean national anthem was played, followed by the national anthem of New Zealand at the welcome ceremony. Mrs Brown, who grew up in Howick, won the inaugural Aitken Fellowship to work at the University of Auckland Centre for Educational Leadership. As part of this fellowship, the former deputy principal of Stanley Bay School, a decile-10

school in Devonport, brings with her the experience of working with some of the leading thinkers in the New Zealand Education sector. Having specialised in designing and delivering courses

for school leaders to improve student outcomes, she is excited about introducing new thought processes at the school. “Making mistakes makes your brain grow. Mistakes are a key to learning. “I want them to know what is working in collaboration.” As she settles into her new seat after it was vacated by former principal of nine years, Dorothy Bigwood, Mrs Brown is keen to push new skill sets in other areas, besides writing. Going for the Green-Gold Enviroschool award is one of them.

Clean, green this ain’t! It’s hard to show on my camera the extent of the litter left behind yet again after a long weekend on our local Eastern Beach. But what is easily expressed is the disgust by the locals. Local social media was in overdrive the Tuesday after Anniversary Weekend, when locals went down for their early morning walks to be faced once more with litter, plastic and glass bottles, lighters, used nappies, chip packets, food, jandals, clothing. There was even a report of a broken tent. Many took to trying to clean up the waste themselves; one lady reported collecting three rubbish bags. The council do engage the services of Downer – who are there early after a long weekend cleaning up the mess. This morning (Tuesday, February 7) there were two trucks, one van and approximately eight men collecting and tiding up after the beach visitors. We are lucky to live in a society where the local authority do come and clean up. However, is this the right approach – where is the self-responsibility or pride in the country or people we are? It has never entered my mind to drop rubbish – not even a lolly wrapper – let alone leave an entire left over meal anywhere. Why don’t other people know to take their rubbish home with them when the bins are full? Why don’t they know of the

environmental damage they are causing to our coastlines and beaches. Aren’t we a Pacific nation in touch with our heritage and environment? But what is most disturbing is their lack of understanding and awareness as to the potential harm and damage they could cause to an unsuspecting child or animal walking along the beach that could cut themselves on broken glass or metal. If these beachgoers don’t know, or heaven forbid don’t care – then can we get some signage to help educate them? Or can the council issue fines to the litterers? The locals are fed up and would like some action. Sarah Ellis Howick

They are also available for appointments every Wednesday at the Ray White office, 81 Second View Avenue, Beachlands from 3.30 pm until 6 pm. e walk down a slight grassy decline, away from the house and garden and towards 4.5 acres of native bush, just as a plump kereru flies overhead, the noisy beating of its wings causing us to cast our eyes upwards and follow its flight path. The green, bronze and white blur of the native pigeon crossing the clearing is soon replaced by several wheeling tui and as we get closer to the bush, more kereru and tui fly low above us. The range and level of birdsong, so close to suburbia, has me in a daze and seeing the native birds flying all around us is a delight. “Our reward is the bush and birds – seeing the growth here and the amount of birds we have coming in,” the owner of this paradise-like property says. She’s giving a tour of her land, which sits on the remnants of the original Hunua Forest near Whitford, to the Times and Sally Barclay – a member of the Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) Society. The FOM is a local, environmentally-minded group who work with Auckland Council to maintain and restore the coastal forest along the Mangemangeroa Estuary on Somerville Road in Howick. They raise and plant between 6000-8000 plants a year in the Mangemangeroa Reserve and there are about 300 volunteers involved. The woman showing us around – who wants to remain anonymous – is one of 15 private landowners who Ms Barclay has recruited to help the FOM tackle the issue of possums and other pests. “It stemmed from the fact that there was a noticeable decline in bird song in the Reserve indicating a decline in their food, the culprits were these jolly possums,” Ms Barclay explains. “We had carmine rata, a rare

species, growing and it didn’t flower because the possums had chewed off the flowering buds. “So we were aware that the possums were eating the flowering plants within the Reserve, which also means of course that they were going to be getting the birds eggs.” And so a long-term community pest control project was set up by Ms Barclay. Last year, with funding from the Howick Local Board, 15 Timms traps and five A12 self-resetting traps for possum killing – as well as $400 worth of rat bait and boxes funded by The Warehouse Botany – were issued to landowners within the Mangemangeroa Valley. Ms Barclay says Auckland Council was setting bait once a month in the Reserve but its records showed that areas of possum invasion were not being fully addressed by the pest control programmes. “Possums are grazers and move over considerable distances to feed,” the former high school biology teacher says.

“Thus the Friends of Mangemangeroa felt that private landowners needed to be approached to see if they would agree to set traps on their land.” With a lot of private land around the Reserve, the FOM hope the private landowners will help control possums and other pests and monitor catch numbers, thus making it possible to know what’s happening in the area over a long period of time. There are 15 landowners who now set and monitor traps in areas adjacent to the Reserve or on land where there is known possum and pest activity. The landowner giving us a tour of her property, which has 4.5 acres of native bush and borders a further 5.5 acres, is clearly passionate about nature, wildlife and New Zealand. She had been trapping possums for some time when the FOM pest control project came along, but the group has supplied her with more advanced possum traps and rat traps to continue and increase her good work.

One of the Timms traps being used on the property to kill possums. Times photo Scott Yeoman

www.times.co.nz The woman says she and her husband get “personal pleasure from doing [their] little bit to keep the bush pristine”. She acknowledges that it is an effort – “you have to keep monitoring things” – but says the noticeable increase in birdlife and native bush regrowth shows it is working. When the woman and her husband moved onto the property eight years ago, her two Timms traps were catching two possums a night. Now she might go weeks without catching one, she says, and her dedicated and constant trapsetting, despite the decline in victims, means even roaming possums don’t last long on her section of land. She proudly names and points out the various native plant species flourishing there as we climb over a fence separating the clearing and walk down through the bush. There are five kauri trees, rewarewa, puriri, rimu, northern rata, various rare native ferns, carmine rata, cabbage trees – just to name a few. On top of the pest trapping, the woman also plants food trees for the birds and controls invasive weed species as they pop up. All of this has helped bring about the “reward” of increased native bush growth and resident birdlife. She believes the kereru are nesting somewhere high in the trees and the now-familiar blur of green, bronze and white and the constant clamour of heavy wings above us as we walk through the bush suggests she is probably right. She also says she now sees “masses” of tui and fantail and can hear morepork in the bush and in her garden all night long. While the FOM hope to also see increased birdlife in the Mangemangeroa Reserve over time, there is a bigger objective, a more important one, to all of this pest control work. “What grows best on the land are the native trees, we know that. We also know that the native trees act as filters to keep the water that goes into the harbour in a better state, this helps to ensure a more sustainable future,” Ms Barclay says. She says if you have native trees, then you have to ensure that they are able to grow and regenerate.

An annual community BBQ Plenty to do at the Botany Summer BBQ this Sunday

O

n Sunday, February 12, the Botany Summer BBQ is taking place once again between 12 noon and 4pm at the Old Flat Bush School Hall, corner of Murphys Road and Flat Bush School Road. This annual event is being held for the third year in succession. The event is a free family day to kick off the New Year and is hosted by local MP for Botany, Jami-Lee Ross. At the Botany Summer BBQ there will be a range of children’s rides available that includes a petting zoo, bouncy castles and face painting. There will also be a sausage sizzle organised by the Rotary Club of Highbrook. Another regular feature at the BBQ is live music from Eddie Manukau, a local identity and talented musician. Community partners that will come

together to host the BBQ, include Howick Local Board member Peter Young who will be wearing his Barfoot & Thompson hat to sponsor the children’s rides. Bellyful that organises meals for families struggling with newborns, will be making popcorn and candy floss; Early childhood and care centre Connections in the Home will bring along their kids’ bouncy castle; NZ Police and St John Ambulance will also be there with a police car and an ambulance for the kids and their families to explore at the Botany Summer BBQ. “Funding for the event comes from sponsorship and the NZ National Party. No taxpayer funds are used,” says Mr Ross. “This is also about as politics-free as you can get at an event hosted by a local politician.”

Calling all little music-loving munchkins ■■By Laura Brookes If you’ve got little munchkins with a love for music, you won’t want to miss the unforgettable Little Wild Storynights, playing at Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre on February 21. The show, brought to you by local songwriter Claudia Gunn, brings together music, family time and literature for kids aged two to eight years old. Mrs Gunn won the APRA children’s song of the year in 2008, went on to win the award

again in 2010, and has just been nominated for Best Children’s Album in the 2017 Children’s Music Awards. She is currently a part of the Kiwi Kids Music collective, an association formed to promote children’s music in New Zealand and championed by children’s entertainer Suzy Cato. When the mother-of-two heard about Storynights overseas, she thought the newly refurbished Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre would be an ideal space to host one

of her own. “It’s big enough to make a show, but small enough to feel cosy too.” Mrs Gunn has promised milk and cookies for every guest, and said kids can expect to hear original songs from her latest album Little Wild Lullabies, as well as an interactive component where she invites kids to participate in illustrating and colouring in. “We really hope families get into the spirit of it, and come along with jammies and teddies,” she said.

win The Times has two copies of the Little Wild Lullabies album to give away. To enter write your name, address and daytime phone number on the back of an envelope and send to Little Wild Lullabies giveaway, Times Newspapers, PO Box 259-243, Botany 2163 or enter at www.times.co.nz by Friday, February 17.

“That re-growth and re-generation is stopped or reduced by the introduced pests – the possum, the stoat, the rat.” While 1080 poison has been extremely successful in killing possums in larger areas, Ms Barclay says, “there is no way we want to see 1080 put around locally in the Howick area”. She says there are other means of controlling possum and pest numbers and one of these is having local landowners help reduce the number of introduced pests. “By getting the community involved, we’re hoping to see further re-generation of that native bush naturally and as a consequence of that an increase in the birdlife. If you’ve got pest free bush, you’ve got the birds.” As we walk back up the clearing towards the landowner’s house and garden, I can see skittish fantails weaving around the trees and ferns to my left and right. At the bottom of the glade behind us, the five kauri trees stand strong, climbing above the bush canopy which, as the sun breaks through, shines with more than a few shades of New Zealand green. ➤➤Want to help? New Zealand’s 2-0 whitewash of Australia in the ChappellHadlee Trophy on Sunday has lifted them to third in the World ODI standings, the latest win in Hamilton being their 26th in their last 30 ODI home games. It helped erase the shame they endured when thrashed by Australia when touring that country in December, aided by a couple of poor captaincy decisions by McCullum’s successor, Kane Williamson, who atoned with astute fielding placements in Hamilton which snared wickets. Revenge, of course, was made much easier by Australia’s decision to rest outstanding premier batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith who had been so dominant all summer on their own wickets. But New Zealand have also progressed nicely with their latest success following home series wins against Pakistan and Bangladesh which revealed
