Making a “conservative estimate”, police said that if the cannabis crops were left to grow, $1 million a year could have been be generated. “Each house was set up with at least several thousand dollars worth of grow equipment,” Detective Hamish Wyllie told the Times this week. “So a bit of time and investment had gone in,” he said. Two men, aged 29 and 42, and a woman aged 29 were located in the grow houses during the raids and were arrested and charged with cultivating cannabis. All three were previously unknown to police and have since appeared in Manukau District Court. Their hearing has been adjourned to a date in March. Five of the six grow houses were rental properties and the sixth was owned by one of the men arrested. Mr Wyllie, who is in charge of prosecution for the case, said police are alleging that the same three people that were growing the cannabis were also creating the “finished product”, but he said police do not know who was distributing it. ➤ Turn to page 2

or months they went undetected – elaborate cannabis-growing set-ups operating quietly in residential streets in south and south-east Auckland. Then in the space of 10 days last month, seven commercial grow houses were uncovered by police, with more than 650 cannabis plants found flourishing under the roofs of nondescript suburban homes. On December 15, six hydroponic grow houses – three in Papakura and three in East Tamaki, and allegedly all part of the same operation, were raided and more than 500 plants were seized and destroyed. Nine days later, on Christmas Eve, a house in East Tamaki was searched by police and another 150 cannabis plants were found. This week, police said there was still no evidence to indicate a direct link between the houses involved in the December 15 raids and the one busted on December 24, but said there were similarities between them. Forty-five Counties Manukau Police officers and staff from the National Organised Crime Group took part in the December 15 raids, executing search warrants at four properties in Papakura and four in the East Tamaki/ Golflands area. The 518 cannabis plants were found at six of the addresses. The houses, some of which were milliondollar-plus properties, sustained some damage as a result of the activity taking place inside them, police said. They said each house had an “elaborate growing set-up with, on average, 60-80 plants of various age and size”.

➤➤Q. Who was the first person you told about receiving this honour and why them? A. The first people I told were my mum and dad. My mum was my coach for many years growing up and played a huge part in helping me achieve what I have done so far. Mum and Dad both supported me a lot over my playing years, and they continue to support me now with all of my coaching, so I wanted to share this with them.

➤➤From page 1 Police are also alleging that the trio would’ve had to have spent a reasonable amount of their time going around and tending to the crops, he said. “Just by looking at the plants themselves, they were having a rotational cropping situation between the houses. So when one was in one phase, another house would be in another and it was continuous cropping,” Mr Wyllie said. He said the six grow houses were nice residential properties – three-

to-four bedroom homes that from all appearances were just stock-standard houses in quiet suburbs. “They’re just in the middle of suburbia in a nice-looking house,” Mr Wyllie said, “keeping themselves to themselves.” He said this would have made it hard for anyone to spot anything unusual because all neighbours would see is a very quiet house with very few comings and goings. “Very, very hard to spot, hence they can get away with it for a number of months.”

➤➤Q. What does the MNZM mean to you? A. It is a huge honour. To be recognised at this level amongst some amazing New Zealanders is something I could only dream of. ➤➤ Q. Does receiving this award change anything for you; does it push you to strive for more? A. My life has changed a bit since having to retire through injury, now my goals are to coach and inspire young kids, and help them to achieve their dreams. I am extremely honoured and humbled to be recognised, but I do what I do because I love it, and I will continue on. ➤➤ Q. How did you celebrate the announcement? A. I was lucky enough to have all of my close friends and family with me on New Year’s Eve over at Waiheke Island when it was announced. We had a toast with some Moet and it was really special to be able to share the moment with all the people who have supported me so much throughout my career.

Mr Wyllie said it was a little unusual to find that cannabis was the pure focus of the grow houses. “...there were no other drugs, no firearms, no indication of gang paraphernalia found throughout the house or anything like that. “This was their business and it was quite well run and well set-up.” The grow house raided on December 24 also appeared to be focused solely on cannabis. No other drugs or weapons were found there by police. A 21-year-old male previously unknown to police was arrested during that raid and was later remanded on bail when he appeared in Manukau District Court on December 26 on charges of cultivating cannabis and obstructing police. He will appear in court again on January 18. That grow house, like five of the six busted nine days earlier, was a rental property in a quiet, residential street. Mr Wyllie said some of the houses had been rented out by agencies and some were rented out by the actual homeowner. He said this comes as a warning to those renting out their properties – checks need to be done. Following the raids on December 15, Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan, who is in charge of that investigation, also highlighted the importance of checking rental properties. “Clearly the landlords for these properties have never done a house inspection in the time the property has been rented and they had no idea of the illegal use that was going on,” he said. “If it can be proved that any of the landlords did know what was happening in the houses, then police would look at taking proceeds of crime action against them and seeking the forfeiture of the houses to the Crown.”

3 killed in house fire Five-year-old Bareth Kaileshan, his mother Bhamini Theiventhiran, 39, and grandmother Umadhevi Theiventhiran, 66, all died in a house fire in Flat Bush on December 22, 2016. Farida Master talks to some of the neighbours

t was frantic knocking on their door that woke up Jojo at around 3.15am on December 22. She was shocked to see panicstricken neighbours at her doorstep. The two-storey Plantation Avenue house diagonally opposite her home in a quiet subdivision of Flat Bush was engulfed in flames. The top storey of the house was gutted, with all the windows blown out. “Anxious neighbours were knocking on all the doors, asking people to get out of their homes. Everyone was afraid that the fire would spread to the neighbouring homes,” she says. Within minutes, the ambulance arrived. Fire appliances rushed to the site and defused the flames that extended more than a metre from the house. Emergency services were alerted at 3.25am. Eight appliances attended. The two-storey house was well involved when they arrived. Three of the family members died at the scene. Three were rescued. Jojo points to the burned-out house saying 47-year-old Kaileshan Thanabalasingham, owner of the home, escaped by leaping out of the window, onto the roof and across the neighbour’s fence. Mr Thanabalasingham, an executive officer of the Refugee Council of NZ, was badly injured and burnt but he continued shouting for help. He was desperate to save his wife, his five-year-old son and his in-laws, who were visiting their daughter for the Christmas holidays. Everyone heard a loud boom as the roof of the house caved in. Amidst the hysteria and blare of sirens was Mr Thanabalasingham’s daughter Krishah, a shell-shocked 11-year-old, sitting on Jojo’s front yard. The frightened girl was clinging on to her granddad. “The young boy was whisked away in the ambulance with his dad who was badly burnt,” says one of the neighbours. According to the neighbours, the Sri Lankan family had moved into the neighbourhood just nine months ago. “Initially we thought it was a

domestic as my dad heard loud screaming and shouting,” says a 15-year-old who lives two houses down. “They were talking in a native language. It was only later we realised that the house was on fire when we saw the reflection of the flames in our neighbour’s pool. What we thought was the crash of plates was actually the breaking of glass windows.” The place has been cordoned off by the police. While the Fire Services and police are working on finding out the cause of the fire, Phil Faidley, Fire Risk management officer, Counties Manukau Fire Area says they are continuing to review the information they collected during their investigation, aiming to determine the origin and cause of this tragic fire. “We hope to be able to make a final determination, possibly as early as the end of this week. It is a

thorough, methodical process we go through to determine the cause of every fire attended by the NZ Fire Service, particularly where this level of loss and tragedy is experienced. “We want to make sure we get it correct, for the sake of those directly and indirectly affected by the incident, and also to learn enough

from this fire to help prevent similar tragedies happening in the future.” On January 5, hundreds of mourners packed the chapel at the Manukau Memorial Gardens, spilling outside as friends and family gathered to remember the lives of those they lost. The service was also attended

Boy drowns in Beachlands Police have released the name of the four-year-old boy who drowned in Beachlands on Christmas Day. Ezekiel Angelo Cullen-Alarcon was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in a pool on Constellation Avenue. Media reported that emergency services were called to the incident in the afternoon

of December 25. The news report said a neighbour who knows the family said he heard the siren for the local fire station sound at about 3pm. The NZ Herald reported: “He arrived home soon after and saw an off-duty fire fighter from the area run into the house next door. “He sensed something was not right so he and his son went

by Race Relations commissioner Dame Susan Devoy who said the unstinted support showed “what New Zealand was all about”. Krishah said her mother was the ‘best baker, best woman alive and best mother’. Bareth, she said, was a ‘jolly good brother’ who she would swap for ‘no other.’ Kailesh, 47, remains in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital. He is in an induced coma. His daughter and his fatherin-law who are both traumatised are understood to have been in bedrooms downstairs and escaped unscathed. ➤➤Outreach coordinator, Refugees as Survivors NZ Diana Swarbrick says that they worked closely with Mr Thanabalasingham over the years and wanted to set up a Givealittle page. “We felt setting up the Givealittle page was the least we could do for him. All proceeds from this will go into a trust to be set up by barrister Deborah Manning.” As of date they have raised $78,854. A post on the page says: “Kailesh Thanabalasingham worked tirelessly for the Refugee Council of New Zealand aiding refugees and asylum seekers in the community who were struggling.” Lawyer, Deborah Manning, described Kailesh as a “tireless advocate for vulnerable people in New Zealand. “Khailesh is one of those people who you can always count on,” she said. ➤➤https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/ familydestroyedbyfire

Foundation donates $125,000 to Kaikoura ■■By Laura Brookes

T

he East Tamaki-based Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation has donated a generous $125,000 to quakeaffected residents in Hurunui and Kaikoura. Members of the foundation travelled to Canterbury on December 17, along with Auckland Civil Defence’s Head of Strategy and Planning Craig Glover, to present the cheque. This comes directly after an earlier donation by the foundation of 504 1.5 litre bottles of water, 40 ecoblankets and 50 Briscoes dinner sets to Spencer Park. Mr Glover said he was most excited about the opportunity to invest into the Kaikoura community and support the local economy at a time of need. The foundation has been involved in providing longterm support to quakeaffected Canterbury residents since February 2011, and plans to continue doing so. Tzu Chi Foundation

spokesperson Patricia Duke said she hopes the donations have helped to “make things easier” for those affected by the November 14 quake, which killed two people and evacuated more than 1000 residents from their homes. Kaikoura District Mayor Winston Gray said he is very grateful for the generosity of the Tzu Chi Foundation and its

support of the local economy as the district rebuilds. “Everyone across New Zealand will be familiar with the effects of the earthquake on Kaikoura, but not everyone will be aware of what it has meant to individual families, neighbours and small businesses.” Hurunui District Mayor Winton Dalley also

expressed his gratitude to the foundation for their willingness to visit and spend time with some of the most affected residents. He said the 7.8 magnitude earthquake “struck a real blow to the district” last November, but commended the strength and determination of the Hurunui community. Mr Gray and Mr Dalley each contacted the Tzu Chi Foundation to express their thanks, and are currently in discussions to organise another visit by the foundation in late January or February. It’s an effort that Howick Ward Councillor and chair of Auckland’s Civil Defence Committee Sharon Stewart called an “astounding” display of support. “We are very grateful for organisations such as this that are so generous in others’ times of need... it is heartening to see so many people stepping up to help.” The Tzu Chi Foundation is located on Springs Road, East Tamaki.

Police are still looking into an aggravated robbery at McDonald’s on Ti Rakau Dr, Northpark in the early hours of New Year’s Eve. The robbery took place at around 3am on December 31. Police cordoned off the fast food restaurant on the day to conduct a scene examination. “At this stage there is nothing more we can say,” a police spokesperson said. There is no information as to what was taken. Police confirmed there is no update but that the investigation is ongoing.

Wrong way up motorway Two teens will appear in court after a police chase the wrong way on the motorway on Sunday. “I can confirm just after 8:30pm on Sunday, a vehicle has fled from police around Pakuranga Road,” a police spokesperson told the Times. “At one point the vehicle was going the wrong way down the motorway, as well as through some suburban streets. The offenders then dumped the vehicle, but two people were arrested shortly after.” Two 16-year-old males are due to reappear in Manukau Youth Court on February 2.

LAWN BOWLS

Goddard takes NZ Singles title F

ormer Howick College student Selina Goddard has won the Women’s Singles title at the National Open Bowls Championships with a 21-9 victory over former Auckland player Reen Stratford. Goddard, who plays for Carlton-Cornwall in Epsom, collected her second career national title with a win in the women’s singles in New Plymouth on Sunday. She easily beat Stratford 21-9 to take the NZ National Singles title, automatically gaining entry into the World Singles Champion of Champions. Goddard represented the Blackjacks at the 2012 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and this latest title could see her back in favour again for the national side. Her first national win was the National Fours in 2014 with teammates Mandy Boyd, Amy Mcilroy and Gemma Watts. “It’s such an exciting feeling (winning the singles title) that

I don’t think will sink in any time soon, “ Goddard, 22, told the Times. “To be the NZ National Singles champion and also get a ticket in the World Champion of Champions is a dream.” The World Singles Champ of Champs is in NSW, Australia from October 30 until November 5 Goddard only entered in the national singles this year. She said the final was played in fairly tricky outdoor conditions as most of the tournament was played in quite gusty winds. “In regards to the score of the final, in my head playing that game it almost didn’t matter if my margin was eight shots in front or only one shot in front,” she said. “Reen is a top bowler and, with bowls, you’ve never secured the win until you reach the final number 21. “I was enjoying the greens in Taranaki and I was feeling

good about where I am as a player as I was able to fit in a lot of prep and training over the winter/spring period so to get the result I did, it’s just such a rewarding feeling.” Goddard is now in her eighth year of playing bowls. For three years she lived on the Gold Coast in Australia and played at the club which is now the host club for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Broadbeach. She arrived back in Auckland last December so this was her first playing season back in Auckland since returning to NZ. The next major event coming up is the New Zealand Open in Auckland from February 14 - 22 which will see Goddard playing in the triples, pairs and singles with teammates Karen Hema and
