eputy Prime Minster Paula Bennett has a good number of portfolios to

contend with.

Yet with just three hours of sleep after travelling the length and breadth of the country campaigning for five days

straight, Mrs Bennett is brighteyed and bushy-tailed.

She has something clever to say to everyone in the packed-tothe-capacity SuperBlues meeting

hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross at the Howick Bowling Club on Friday morning.

“It’s quite funny when people think they know me because

Reflecting on her working relationship with Prime Minister Bill English when she took over as Deputy PM seven months ago, she says there has been a big change.

“We don’t argue anymore.

Earlier we used to argue about policy but we don’t fight anymore.

“I told him, there are two people in an argument. One of them was right and one of them was you,” she laughs.

“Ladies, feel free to use that line on your partners, anytime.”

About Mr English she says: “He’s just got this amazing big brain that can tackle really complex issues and cut it down into caring about an individual community, like how the policy can affect a woman in South Auckland.”

Browns Island Motukorea has become Auckland Council’s newest Regional Park and its first island park.

And the news is being welcome by Auckland’s Friends of Regional Parks (FOR Parks), says President Bronwen Turner.

“Browns Island Regional Park adds to the region’s chain of priceless Regional Parks along the coast and in the Hauraki Gulf,” she said.

“We applaud the energy and persistence of Auckland Council to guarantee public access and enjoyment of this remarkable asset into the future.”

The new Regional Park opens up a myriad of recreational opportunities for nature and heritage lovers, the boating fraternity, day walkers and campers.

The new park also offers opportunities for volunteers to work with council to restore the ecology of the centrally located island, ravaged by a recent scrub and grass fire.

In the face of intensive housing development, FOR Parks calls for urgent action by Auckland Council to fund acquisition and development of new Regional Parks both to the north and south of Auckland.

Among the opportunities are Crater Hill, the Okura Estuary and properties along the route of the Te Araroa walking trail.

Principles to guide Auckland’s park development and a 50 year strategy were presented to council by FOR Parks in 2016.

A

rt brings communities together. Nothing illustrates it more than people from ages five to 70 adding colour to a giant popup mural of the cityscape at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre on Thursday morning.

The 10-metre mural created by one of New Zealand’s most recognised contemporary artist, Hayley King aka Flox during the school holidays (till July 23) at the shopping centre is to connect people through creativity.

“A project like this brings people from different walks of life together says,” says Hayley who works with prints, publications, murals, graphic design, stationary and has also illustrated a very popular children’s story book Tu Meke Tui as well designed an adult colouring book.

The mural that features the theme `Love my City Auckland’ includes the city skyline with her trademark birds, flora and fauna beautifully integrated with the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower, Auckland Museum, Clock Tower and more.

“It is great to see people so engaged,” says the aerosol and stencil artist with a degree in fine art and business studies.

“Besides, who wants to be out on weather like this,” she laughs.

Hayley is no stranger to making a splash in the community with larger-than-life artworks.

Last year, she collaborated with another New Zealand artist, a jewellery designer and a photographer, to work on the Painted Peacock Project which involved travelling to Udaipur in India, and hosting art-based workshops for a local primary school.

“We also painted a large street mural for the community on a wall near Lake Pichola,” she says about her trip to India.

“The Painted Peacock Project

was about our artistic growth and more importantly sharing our skill and knowledge with the local community.

“The final objective of the trip was to showcase the documentation and artwork that came out of the project in the form of an exhibition in New Zealand.”

Part of the proceeds they raised went towards providing the Indian school children with new shoes and art supplies.

They also raised money for KidsCan Charitable Trust in New Zealand.

did a three- month artist residency in Taiwan, where again she created an outdoor mural and painted it live.

“My brief for the residency was to create street projects to enliven the concrete ambience of Taiwan.”

She was also commissioned for custom jobs in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Hayley says that travelling and immersing herself in new cultures is something she does for her creative growth as an artist.

“I find it very inspiring and fulfilling,” she says.

Starbucks could be returning to the east. The coffee chain, owned by NZ stock exchange listed company Restaurant Brands, shut the popular Botany store last Monday, much to the dismay of many fans.

The Times’ online news story – posted on the paper’s Facebook page - reached more than 32,300 people – a record for a Times’ online news story, and recorded 149 likes and 21 shares.

A sign posted in the shop’s window last week read: “All good things must come to an end… and so it is for our Botany Town Centre store.

We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and for being part of the journey with us. We hope you will enjoy the Starbucks Experience in our other Auckland stores, the closest located at Sylvia Park.”

Meanwhile Restaurant Brands responded to the times’ request for comment but would not elaborate on precisely why the store was closed.

“We are deeply saddened by this closure too. We are closing due to external factors. With the mall refurbishing we were unable to hold on to the store,” the company said.

“We are looking for another great location within east Auckland, however these things do take time.”

Botany Town Centre told the Times last week.

“Twelve months or so ago we renewed some leases on shorter terms than usual anticipating possible development. Starbucks was one of these.”

Taking the plunge T

he Rotary Annual Mid Winter Plunge event was organised for the community by the Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast in aid of the Maraetai Coastguard.

“We were lucky with fabulous weather and everyone there seemed to enjoy themselves, it certainly was a great community event,” said Pohutukawa Coast Rotary president Alex Garden.

The mid winter plunge consists of a swim out to a buoy, a plunge where entrants go around the local coastguard boat and a best costume competition.

The winner of the swim was Tom Stacey.

by Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell, was ‘Superman’. The Churton family, dressed up to make a big splash, also deserve a special mention.

The Howick Baptist Home Senior Living Care and Village residents have been keeping themselves busy by putting together goody bags in support of new mums. Recently the residents put together 110 goody bags that were used for a fundraiser night for the charity Bellyful. July 1 initiatives deliver for Kiwis On July 1, a number of initiatives came into effect which will benefit the Botany community.

These are initiatives that deliver for New Zealanders in many ways, from cheaper registration fees for motorists, more immunisation for our kids, right through to extra police starting at Police College.

The $2 billion-a-year pay equity settlement benefits some of our health sector’s lowest paid workers who will receive pay rises of between 15 and 50 per cent over the next five years.

On July 1 around 20,000 of this predominately female workforce, who were on the minimum wage of $15.75 an hour, moved to at least $19 an hour.

For a fulltime worker, this means they’re now taking home around an extra $100 a week,

This month, the first of the extra 880 frontline Police will start Police College, with the first graduates on the beat by October.

Botany is to benefit from this initiative, with Counties Manukau to receive 91 extra Police officers.

This follows the announcement of the Government’s $503 million Safer Communities package earlier this year.

For eligible employees and self-employed parents, the maximum weekly rate of Paid Parental Leave will increase to $538 gross a week, reflecting a 2.1 per cent rise in average weekly earnings over the past year.

eing born in the last year of World War I and being a young bride throughout World War II appears to have created an incredibly positive and resilient a centenarian.

Frances (Frankie) Tuckey was born on June 29, 1917 while Britain and its allies continued to battle during the Northern Hemisphere summer.

As a newborn baby in London, Frankie was oblivious to the bombing of her city little more than a week after her birth but 100 years later, she has many great memories to share at her Ambridge Rose Manor home.

Frankie grew up with her two sisters and parents in a two-room house with no running water.

“We had to go to the floor below us and they had a little corner sink where we could get water,” says Mrs Tuckey.

“If I’ve lived this long – we couldn’t have done too badly.”

Mrs Tuckey’s parents had German and Dutch heritage and they changed their name from Diesch to Hottages to avoid conflict for the family.

The children used one name for school and another for home, which caused a bureaucratic hiccup when Mrs Tuckey was an adult and applied for a passport to come to New Zealand.

On October 10, 1937, Frankie married William (Bill) Tuckey and the young couple had a longdistance relationship while Bill

served during WWII. Mr Tuckey was at Dunkirk and Mrs Tuckey was bombed out of her London home.

“I worked on munitions and we always had to go down into the shelter, but actually it was quite exciting and we didn’t have to work when that was going on.

“In the factory, all the girls’ husbands were away in the army or the navy and we had quite a good time, even though it’s a terrible thing to say.”

There were naafi (navy, army, and air force institutes) dances and because the women were working they ate out for dinner enjoying very cheap and great quality meals. On one occasion, Mrs Tuckey was told her husband was missing, which was a

worry but he did return home, eventually. “When we were young we never took a lot of notice of what was happening – we just carried on.”

The couple’s son, Robin was one of the first baby boomers to be born and the family lived in Brixton. Mrs Tuckey worked as a machinist, sewing pockets onto shirts for a penny per pocket and her husband worked for a moving company.

“We didn’t want for anything and quite enjoyed life.

“We didn’t have a lot of money but you got on with it, always managed and never complained.”

Mrs Tuckey’s sister came to New Zealand, and the Tuckey family followed her when Robin was five years old.

NZ Press Council dismisses complaint A

reader lodged a complaint to the Press Council in May following a report by the Times about the discovery of the body of a man in Whitford. She had demanded that we remove the story online. That story had received a an enormous number of hits online and an extraordinary number of comments, many from trolls. We refused to remove the story. Following is the unedited finding of the NZ Press Council in full.

➤➤Finding: Not upheld Ellen Adoko alleges breaches of our principles of accuracy, fairness and balance, in a report published in Times Online on May 10, 2017. ➤➤The Complaint The publication complained of was a short piece noting that a body had been found at Whitford, and the police were at an address “where they say that a “sudden death” has taken place”.

It continued that formal identification procedures were underway and the police were not treating the death as suspicious. It also states the death would be referred to the coroner. The article concludes that

the police could not confirm that it was the body of 55-year old John Prangley, who was missing from his Whitford home since April 13. It was accompanied by a headshot of the late Mr Prangley.

The major thrust of the complaint appears to be that, although the body had not been formally identified, the editor used the photo with the article title because he was “pretty certain” that the body found was the late Mr Prangley.

Although the complainant does not appear to be related or have any knowledge of the late Mr Prangley and his family, she states the family would be devastated and the article will make things worse for them. ➤➤The Response The editor stated that this was not an unusual story, in that a man had gone missing, this had been reported on earlier, and then a body was found. The

betrayal come to light.

Off-the-cuff comments also remind us of the era’s divisive class system – and why some things are best left in the past.

That’s not to say it’s entirely a dark play – in fact it’s littered with many moments of comedic relief.

But it’s a stark reminder that the glamorous lifestyle was not all it was cracked up to be – and certainly wasn’t for everyone.

Ultimately, the story ends in tragedy – where the thrust stage was utilised perfectly in unison with off stage sound effects.

By the end, I’d fallen in love with the story of Gatsby all over again.

But don’t take my word for it - head on down and see for yourself – you’ll be transported to another era and you’ll love every second of it.

Any privacy breach would be that of the deceased family, but they have not complained. The complaint is not upheld.

he Government’s $1 billion financing of much needed growth infrastructure is very welcome, but infrastructure requirements nationwide are now in the tens of billions and better planning, funding and delivery systems are required to meet the challenge,” says Infrastructure New Zealand’s chief executive, Stephen Selwood.

“The Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) is a helpful component of the Government’s housing response. The allocation of government debt to New Zealand’s fastest growing regions will improve the supply of serviced land where it is most needed.

This month’s announcement combined with recent budget commitments to infrastructure investment is positive but a lot more is required, he said.

“Analysis by the Office of the Auditor General consistently shows that councils across New Zealand are struggling to maintain and renew existing assets, let alone provide for growth.

“In Auckland there is a $400 million to $700 million transport funding gap that must be bridged, and a 7000 home construction deficit accumulating every year.

Auckland home buyers just got more choice, with the number of apartments listed for sale in June almost double the previous month (800 listings compared with 453 in May 2017).

Beware dangerous Highlanders H

aving had the Hurricanes burst their unbeaten bubble in a 31-22 Cake Tin thriller, the Crusaders will be wary hosting the dangerous Highlanders in Saturday night’s Super Rugby quarter-final.

While they will rejoice in having their All Blacks front row of Joe Moody, Codie Taylor and Owen Franks return, they will be mindful of a Highlanders backline attack that has been sharpened by the return of Ben Smith following his inner ear problem.

Winning a championship that always escaped popular predecessor Todd Blackadder would cap a great season for new Crusaders head coach Scott “Razor” Robertson who has given the team a superior 15-man game plan.

They will also welcome back from injury Ryan Crotty, probably at

pace and class for the Brumbies in their Canberra clash.

A big mover in recent weeks has been Hurricane Sam Lousi who has formed a more than useful locking combination with hard working Mark Abbott.

With No 8 Brad Shield anchoring a scrum that has lively Ardie Savea and Callum Gibbons as tearaway flankers, the Hurricanes’ forwards deserve more kudos than they have received.

However with Beauden and Jordie Barrett the stars in what is virtually an All Blacks backline, praise for their backs is understandable, especially with Jordie and Ngani Laumape making their debuts as All Blacks this season.

Celebrating 15 years of connecting with the community The huge turnout on Friday evening at the Imperial Palace Restaurant was an indication of how well connected the Pakuranga Chinese Association is with the local community.

Around 600 people turned up to celebrate 15th anniversary of the Pakuranga Chinese Association that meets three times a week at the Pakuranga Leisure Centre and at Te Tuhi.

The grand event hosted by the founding chairperson Barry Hung had the movers and shakers of the Chinese community turn up in full regalia.

Also spotted were Howick Local Board members David Collings and Peter Young; Botany Labour candidate

Tofik Mamedov; Pakuranga and Botany Maori Party candidates Carrie Stoddart-Smith and Wetex Kang; community workers Rosa Chow and Jacke Hui; and beauty queens with their crowns firmly on their heads — Michelle Isemonger, Miss International New Zealand and Annie Evans-Miss World New Zealand.

The evening was packed with a range of cultural performances, showcasing local Chinese talent.

Mr Hung spoke about the contribution that the association has made to the community as well as the activities they host for the migrant Chinese community to make them feel at home.
