Australasia’s oldest bird club gets ready for its biggest show ■ BY FARIDA MASTER

I

t took Dave Nicholson more than 50 years before he bred show winners.

Yet there hasn’t been a day he hasn’t enjoyed their splendid colours, bird song and relaxing companionship after a hard day at work.

President of the Auckland Metro Bird Club for the last 10 years, the bird-keeper and judge of German Roller canaries is excited about the oldest bird club in New Zealand and Australia hosting the 108th show at Ormiston Senior College on Saturday and Sunday, July 1- 2.

More than 500 of North Island’s best canaries, budgies, finches, parrots and parakeets will be on display by 60 exhibitors.

Breeding birds from the age of eight, he says: “We are trying to dispel the myth that bird keeping is an old man’s hobby. We want more young families to get involved.”

There will also be a pet bird section on Sunday from 10am12noon where local families are invited to bring along their pet bird-be it a canary, budgie, parrot or even a rescued sparrow- for a chance to win a prize.

Currently, there is a local school colouring competition and the winning entries will be on display at the show. ➤ Turn to page 2

Free pools for all?

Howick Local Board is considering the possibility of introducing a local targeted rate so that Howick ward residents of all ages have free entry to the area’s only public swimming pools at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

The next step would be to consult further on the specific cost should the feedback be supportive of the investigation.

“We particularly want your feedback on whether to investigate the option of a local targeted rate to enable all our ratepayers to have free access to our pools,” says David Collings, Howick Local Board chairperson in the Help Shape Howick’s future, summary of the draft Howick Local Board Plan 2017.

However Howick Local Board member Peter Young feels strongly about increasing rates.

“People are absolutely against the idea. They feel this is an excuse for more rates,” he says, slamming the proposal.

“The feedback I have got from people I have met in the electorate is that we would rather have better roads instead of stone chips surfacing that cause accidents; and better transportation, than the use of free swimming pool facilities.

ookstore chain Whitcoulls will next week shut up shop at Pakuranga Plaza.

Pakuranga Plaza’s landlord GYP Properties, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Global Yellow Pages, has confirmed to the Times that Whitcoulls is to vacate the shopping centre.

A Whitcoulls staff member said the store was closing at the end of June. She would not confirm how many staff there were but did say all staff would be relocated to other Whitcoulls stores.

The Pakuranga store was currently flogging everything at discount prices, she said, with 25 per cent sales on at the moment. As to customer

Bucklands Beach resident Chris Agius, who has been breeding canaries for 15 years, says that bird-keeping is “like raising little ones and the peaceful hobby is a family affair which can be done in small spaces”.

Breeding show birds involves good maintenance and diet.

“In the months of JuneJuly, I start looking for traits to start putting pairs together,” he says.

Battling it out on world stage ■■By Farida Master

T

hey smashed out the moves with precision and went on to win the Battlegrounds New Zealand Hip Hop competition in Hamilton recently.

The two hip hop dance crews Velocity and V-Kinz from CarterChan Dance Centre are thrilled to have gone through the tough national selections rounds to make it to World Supremacy Battlegrounds finals in Sydney in October.

Both crews are trained by choreographers Brandon and Cameron Carter-Chan. Brandon is a national tap champion and Cameron is the current national hip hop champion.

Brandon says they couldn’t believe it when their names were announced as national winners.

“We were blown away when Velocity, our junior crew, won the New Zealand title for the Young Guns division for 12-15-years-olds.

“They also won their division at the Project Hip Hop competition in Tauranga the weekend prior to the event. That put a lot of pressure on the senior crew V-Kingz since we are the teachers,” he laughs.

V-Kingz scored second place in the open division for adults.

“This is a very prestigious dance competition and we were up against some very experienced

“We were quite nervous since there was huge cheering for the more established crew Prestige who have been around forever. They are really good and like the grandfather of hip hop.”

Brandon admits it is an honour to be only second to Prestige dance crew. We will now compete with top crews from different countries on the world stage,” he says.

“It is toughest when there is lack of cheer in the beginning and then you gradually gain respect of the audience as you prove yourself. The panel of judges later mentioned

we had got something different to the choreography, which is always a risk you take,” say Brandon who is studying architecture.

Brigid Carter-Chan, principal of the teaching faculty at the dance centre says that Kiwis have raised the bar very high on the world stage more so with crews like Palace, Identity and Prestige.

“The level of dancing we are asking our young people to do at an international level is very, very high,” she says. “They have to step up and understand the musicality of every accent and beat as they hit every move with precision.”

Times has good night at awards The Howick and Pakuranga Times took third place as best all-round newspaper in the annual New Zealand Community Newspapers Association awards at the weekend.

It finished behind runner-up The Scene and winner The Star.

Judges said of the Times’ entry: “A newspaper that covers all its patch well and has a lively letters column demonstrating excellent engagement with its community.

A notch above other, similar community papers in the field.”

Eastlife magazine (which belongs to the Times’ sister company Times House Publishing) won best front page in the feature/lifestyle category as an associate member. Its sister publication Rural Living was runner-up. Judges said of Eastlife: “A striking photograph ... up close and personal with a gannet. A most eye-catching cover.”

Of Rural Living they said: “This cover tells a rural story. Great teasers covering a range of ‘downon-the-farm’ activities along with a back-up pic of te aged bus which could have seen school service after years on the road carrying passengers for NZ Road Services... and two lucky country kids enjoying a rare ice cream treat in the foreground.”

Rural Living was also runnerup in the best all-round lifestyle magazine (associate) category.

Jon Rawlinson, a journalist with Eastlife was runner-up in the best senior sports journalist

category. Jon’s portfolio was also commended in best senior feature/lifestyle journalist category. The judge said: “He had a strong portfolio of local sporting personalities and the pieces on Black Cap Colin Munro, former Olympic weightlifter Precious McKenzie and pro golfer Ryan Fox an enjoyable read.”

Long-time Times photographer Wayne Martin was highly commended in the best news photographer category and again in the best feature/lifestyle photographer category for photos for Eastlife.

Clare McGillivray, art director for the Times group, won the best individual advertising portfolio category (class 1) for an entry from the Botany and Ormiston Times.

Judges said: “This entry has a great variety of styles with great use of fonts and colours suited to the advertiser.”

The Howick and Pakuranga Times was highly commended in the community involvement category (class 2). The judge said: “The Times never shy of the good fight, sets out to save the locally-prized viewshafts to the Hauraki Gulf from the cenotaph on Stockade Hill where high-rise development is threatening an important local sense of place. More than $31,000 in fundraising later and the embattled ratepayers’ group’s legal costs are covered; the fight for recognition of the viewshafts goes on – even if the development itself could not be stopped.”

otany Downs Secondary College’s Night of Nations thrilled locals on Monday

night.

The 130 international students showcased their cultures in an exuberant and colourful night with Chinese Lion dances, K-pop performances, Indian dancers and even a Kapa Haka.

Quesadillas, butter chicken, bubble tea and dumplings were just some of the tempting treats also available.

who is part of the Outreach committee said the event was designed to bridge the gap between the school and community.

Wang described the event as “a trip around the world, for just a gold coin donation.”

“Every performance had me on the edge of my seat, and left me wondering, what next?”

The student run event was organised by between the BDSC Outreach committee and the International student council.

All proceeds from the event went to Kidz First Hospital to help fund the building of their emergency ward.

“It is not a well known fact, but most of the children here in East Auckland are actually admitted to Kidz First Hospital instead of Starship Hospital,” said Ward.

This was part of Botany Downs Secondary College’s annual cultural week, which hopes to build stronger relations and celebrate diversity within the school and the local community.

The official opening will be followed by a number of community events to provide the public an opportunity to experience the twin-tunnels before opening to traffic in early July.

The Government has committed extra funding for transport projects in Auckland and around the country. A couple of key investments are rail links and New Zealand state highways.

The Government is to invest in $9.17 billion for New Zealand’s state highway network through

Key highway projects that will be progressed around Auckland over the next four years include the completion of Auckland’s Western Ring Route, the Northern and Southern Corridor State Highway 1 improvements in Auckland, the East West Link, and the Huntly and Hamilton sections of the Waikato Expressway.

The Government is also investing $436 million of new capital for Auckland’s City Rail Link (CRL).

Once complete, the 3.4 kilometre double-track underground rail line will run from Britomart station in downtown Auckland through the CBD to connect with the existing western line at Mt Eden station. The CRL is to double the capacity of the existing rail network and cut travel time for commuters.

It will also reduce costs for people and businesses throughout the country, with wider economic benefits estimated to be worth $430m through improved productivity and reduced travel time.

Maka, who resides in Botany Junction, is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland, majoring in economics with a minor in politics She will be taking over 2016 Howick rep Mackenzie Valgre, who helped inspire her to apply for the role.

“She was a huge inspiration for me. We’re still friends to this day,” said Maka.

Maka aspires to work for the United Nations one day.

“Helen Clark is my inspiration.

For a really long time I have been incredibly interested in international relations,” said Maka.

She feels privileged to have been accepted to this position, and have the chance to inspire and be the voice for Howick youth.

“I’d love to find my place in terms of what I can improve for young people.”

EXTRA FUNDING FOR TRANSPORT IN AUCKLAND

The Waterview Tunnel completion celebration marks the biggest change in Auckland’s transport system since the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959.

Waterview Connection includes twin 2.4km-long three-lane tunnels, and a giant motorway interchange at Great North Road to connect the Southwestern and Northwestern motorways.

WATERVIEW TUNNEL TO OPEN On Sunday 18 June, Prime Minister Bill English, Transport Minister Simon Bridges and Finance Minister Steven Joyce cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the $1.4 billion Waterview Tunnel. It was great to see that thousands of people walked and biked the 2.4km Waterview tunnel to commemorate its completion.

Veisinia Maka has a few things she would change about the world, but for now, she’s starting in Howick.

Maka, 20, has been named at the 2017 Howick representative for the Youth Advisory Panel.

It’s not her first time working with the council either – she’s been on the youth council since she was 15 in an “open-seat” capacity.

“I have this passion for young people, and their voices,” said Maka.

“When you’re passionate it resonates with people, for some reason people believe in me.”

Her most urgent concern is the transparency lacking between the generations, and between council and youth.

The council is consulting with young people through surveys, and without face to face meetings Maka believes they’re losing the real connection and not finding out what the youth really need. She is prepared to make a difference though.

“I love influencing people, I like a challenge.”

This will not be the first challenge for Maka either, she recently volunteered for the UN, helping plan their national Aotearoa Youth Declaration conference.

She wants to see Howick have a youth centre where young people can come and connect with each other, instead of going into the city.

“I’d like for there to be a place for young people to come together- a place where people can connect.”

Maka also hopes to increase the youth turn out when it comes to voting for elections.

“I hope to really try to connect with groups, find some sort of

Special mission to Beachlands

Theft ‘gutting’ for BMX club

C

rew of the Auckland & Coromandel Westpac Rescue Helicopter were tasked to a very special mission in Beachlands.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust had invited 25 year Beachlands residents Tony and Carol Hatton to this year’s Code: 1 launch at their Mechanics Bay base last Thursday. Tony’s rescue in Northland’s Kellys Bay featured on the show – the first of 10 new episodes.

It was with sadness that Tony rang the Trust last week saying he was unable to attend the launch party due to poor health. Tony was recently diagnosed with cancer.

After wishing him all the very best, the crew felt more could be done to make sure Tony didn’t miss out. They then struck upon an idea. If the Hattons could not come to the preview party, the crew would bring the party to them.

since returned home to Canada.

Armed with morning tea and a laptop, the crew met outside the Hatton’s home and received a very warm welcome.

Tony, 74-years-old at the time of the accident, got into a spot of trouble while holidaying at Kellys Bay on the northern side of the Kaipara Harbour over summer. It was around midday New Year’s Eve and Tony was keen to take a quick dip.

Tony entered the water from the beach’s sea wall. As he landed, his feet and legs stuck fast in the mud below. Falling forward, he was unable to get up again. Carol, who was relaxing nearby with friends, says it soon became clear that something was very wrong.

Realising he was in trouble, Tony managed to crawl on his hands and knees, and get back to the safety of the sea wall. It was a struggle, but he made it out and on to land. The victim of a near-

drowning, he had taken in a lot of sea water and collapsed with exhaustion.

Thanks to the quick thinking of the small seaside community and campers, emergency services were called in and within 28 minutes, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter had arrived at the scene. In a serious condition, Tony, was air lifted to Auckland Hospital where Tony would spend several days recovering.

Tony and Carol agree, that had the helicopter not attended, Tony might not have made it.

They were delighted to be able to thank the crew in person.

Seventeen-year-old Elias WorrallBader is taking part in this year’s Red Socks Challenge – an event held annually in memory of Sir Peter Blake.

The renowned adventurer led by example when it came to looking after the world we live in.

Now, the Red Socks Challenge aims to honour and continue that legacy by raising money for the Sir Peter Blake Trust that will go toward ‘inspiring New Zealanders to lead the way in looking after the natural environment; to identify new and innovative solutions to the challenges we face and go forward with hope and determination to make a positive change’. local BMX club is offering a $500 reward after falling victim to theft for a second time over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

The Mountain Raiders BMX Club, based at Lloyd Elsmore Park had its two new team gazebos stolen over the long weekend. The gazebos, with the club’s signage on them, cost around $3000 and were only bought by the club just before Christmas.

Club president Adam Darby said the repeated theft is “really gutting.”

“We’re a community facility. It’s not exclusively for the club, it’s a public facility and anyone can go and ride there and it’s a very, very popular facility as well.

The club has been based at the Lloyd Elsmore since 2012 after they moved from the old Pigeon Mountain track and Mr Darby said they’d had no issues with vandalism at the new site until around 18 months ago.

The first time saw their industrial grade power tools stolen, which were replaced through a combination of donations and club funds and are now stored at a property off site.

The club, which operates on donations and minimal funds, has building insurance but not contents insurance due to the high excess involved, so the stolen items were not able to be replaced under insurance.

“We thought once they realised there’s not much value in there that they wouldn’t bother coming back, but we suspect the same people keep coming back,” said Mr Darby.

“They probably thought we’d replace them [the tools] under things planned for the challenge which he intends to complete during the school’s Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week from June 26-30.

This year’s theme for the week, he said, is Believe You Can, with the aim of inspiring students to aim high in life and take up leadership roles. Events include themed assemblies with guest speakers, an Instagram leadership message competition, and the handing out of Red Socks to students in recognition of their leadership achievements.

insurance and came back to steal the new ones then realised they weren’t there and thought ‘what else can we steal?’”

Mr Darby said the thieves may not have been aware of the extent of the branding on the stolen gazebos, which were covered while in storage and may attempt to sell the frames.

“There’s nothing in there [the shed] that would be that valuable to other people, but they’re things which are valuable to the club. The barbeque, donated by Masport, which was also stolen, is our main source of fundraising for the club.”

He said the club is at a loss as to how to deter the thieves.

The Estuary Art Awards bring together artworks by local artists who have responded to the concerns of the Estuary, Kohl Tyler-Dunshea’s art work, highlighting the Offerings, draws attention.

This year’s awards ceremony, held at the Malcolm Smith Gallery at Uxbridge on Saturday, June 10, celebrated the work of Tyler-Dunshea, along with the work of other finalists including Arielle Walker and Mo Stewart.

Judge Ane Tonga selected this work, partly, because of its sheer ‘look at me’ audacity.

“However, Offerings, is also rich in inflections.

The participative installation work allows gallery visitors to select one of the displayed plants to be placed nearby the Tamaki Estuary or a place of their choosing. Each plant was selected for its ability to stabilise the estuary banks, improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife.

Though a seemingly small gesture, the ecological issues which underpin the participatory element of this work are made explicit: both this ‘artwork’ and the estuary need us to activate it in order to make positive change. The work shifts from slow burn to packing a punch and in this way holds us accountable to the Estuary.

The artist’s pursuit of the potential of art to positively impact the Tamaki Estuary is ambitious and, for this reason, awarded the first prize.”

tudents and teachers of Wakaaranga School are thrilled to be part of a twofold initiative by Corrections and Auckland Council that ties in with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff’s drive of planting a million trees.

Enviroschools lead teacher Kylee Hanlon-Judd along with acting principal Caroline von Sierakowski and a handful of students received a consignment of 115 Meyer lemon trees from Lynette Cave, operational director Corrections Services and Marua Kutu, service manager Manurewa Community Corrections, last Tuesday morning.

Ms Hanlon says: “Wakaaranga School already has around 50 trees and it is great to be part of the sustainable employment and create a greener, healthier environment. We are excited to share the trees with a cluster of other enviroschools in the area.

“Around 3.30pm today, teachers from enviroschools will be here for beekeeping.

We have two bee hives in enclosures at the back of the school and so the focus today is on beekeeping. After which, we will share the lemon trees amongst us.”

Partnering with Auckland Council, the initiative involves prisoners working in prison nurseries cultivating native trees and plant seedlings, while

Corrections Northern Regional commissioner Jeanette Burns says the Million Trees initiative will give offenders the chance to give back to the community and help create a lasting legacy that will benefit the environment for generations to come.

“This project is a great fit with

Corrections’ goal of reducing re-offending to make New Zealand a safer place. It gives offenders an opportunity to become engaged in purposeful work, while serving their sentence,” says Ms Burns.

“Together with Auckland Council, we will be able to create not only a greener, healthier and more beautiful environment, but offenders will have a unique chance to turn their lives around, while making a lasting contribution to society.”

Offenders will gain practical skills and formal qualifications while involved in the project, which will help them gain sustainable employment and in turn lead to safer communities.

Corrections deliver horticultural training in prisons, and prisoners can earn the National Certificate in Horticulture up to level 4.

Participants in the horticultural programme undertake NZQA-accredited training in a range of areas, including propagation of plants, workplace safety, composting and planting.

At Auckland Prison nursery, for example, around 126,000 native trees and plants are being grown.

Each year, supervised offenders on community work sentences complete a total of nearly 2 million hours of free labour in New Zealand communities.

Due to her father’s engineering project management work, Ms Minson also spent time in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China during her childhood, and as a result, developed a strong interest in the connections between diverse people, cultures and religions.

All artworks in this series bear the names of ancestors and mythological deities from Maori, Egyptian, Hindu and Christian cosmology.

She hopes viewers will experience the art as a reflection of themselves – as a mirror.

“I think we’re capable of every single trait in the universe, light and dark. So as an artist, if something profound or loving for example, is coming through me then I must admit, those qualities exist in me. In the same way as a viewer, as someone who appreciates art, by recognising uplifting qualities or beauty in a piece of work, it is coming through you too and is a part of you.

“We all know how this feels with music, when we are moved by a song or our heart breaks over some lyrics. That is compassion and we have potential for all those emotions within ourselves, all the time.

“These are large, bold paintings that give you nowhere else to look.

“They confront you and then draw you in with intricate detail. Each painting is a self portrait. While I’m painting, I’m embodying the feeling, the characters and the traits of the spirit of the piece onto the canvas. I’m getting my ego out of the way and letting the message come through. You could call it channelling. It might sound lofty but I think its how all creativity happens.”

New proposals to simplify personal income tax The Government is proposing to make tax simpler for individuals, with people whose only income is from a salary, wages or investments no longer being required to file tax returns to receive tax refunds or to calculate any additional tax.

The consultation document, Better administration of individuals’ income tax, was released on Monday by Finance Minister Steven Joyce and Revenue Minister Judith Collins.

“The Government is very keen to ensure that the tax system is

as simple as possible so people can clearly see the link between their efforts and their after-tax income,” Mr Joyce says.

“We started the process in Budget 2017 with the tax threshold changes and the removal of the Independent Earner Tax Credit, and this is the next step to a simpler fairer tax system.”

Ms Collins says currently, many people might be owed a refund or have tax to pay and not realise it.

“This could occur if they

paying a more accurate amount through the year and receive any refunds automatically,” Mr Joyce says.

“This is good news for about three million taxpayers.”

Responding to this week’s announcement by the Ministers, executive director of the Taxpayers’ Union, Jordan Williams, said: “There was a very real risk that officials got their way and the tax system was made more not less administratively burdensome.

“That’s what they were

Operatunity brings us It’s Rainin’ Men! H

e’s a lawyer and a performer.

Somehow, Rory Nolan manages to balance his passion for both the arts and the law.

The talented performer rehearsed his role in Mamma Mia! whilst studying for his fifth-year law exams in 2014.

In 2016, he was working for a commercial law firm during the day and performing the leading role of Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera.

Nolan began performing at the age of 16, appearing in his first production Jesus Christ Superstar at Saint Kentigern College and fell in love with the performing arts.

“I know I’ve always wanted to be a singer, but at the same time can’t believe that I am finally getting the opportunity to pursue it as a realistic career choice.”

Now, he’s appeared in more than 15 music, television and theatre productions, and has taken time out of his day job to perform in Operatunity’s upcoming show It’s Rainin’ Men! He’s joined by three other young Kiwi artists – Operatunity Principal Artist Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua and singers Cameron Barclay and Rutene Spooner.

Lions play war games T

he All Blacks can expect a brutal aerial bombardment and bone-crunching tackles to combat their superior running game against the British and Irish Lions in Saturday’s eagerly awaited first test at Eden Park.

It was the near perfect execution of these tactics that negated the threat of Damian McKenzie, Nehe Milner-Skudder and James Lowe when the Lions mauled NZ Maori 32-10 at Rotorua last weekend.

It all started with the domination exerted by forwards Tadhg Furlong, Mario Itoje, Sean O’Brien and Taulupe Faletau against a well beaten Maori pack that gave Irish halves Conor Murray and Jonny Sexton a perfect ride.

Murray’s towering bombs were deadly and pose a major threat to the All Blacks back three who won’t be allowed the freedom to attack with the impunity they enjoyed in the 78-0 thrashing of Samoa.

With Murray seen as the major challenger to Aaron Smith’s status as the world’s best halfback, their contrasting styles should make interesting viewing.

I recently discovered illegally-dumped building materials on a busy walkway at the end of our cul de sac - Dale Crescent in Pakuranga.

What kind of low life, lazy person would leave this kind of material with nails protruding to save themselves a few dollars in tip fees?

For the record, to aforementioned person, your vehicle details along with other incriminating evidence have been passed onto the Council’s Illegal dumping team who will no doubt be in contact with you shortly.

This isn’t the first time I’ve contacted the council with this kind of complaint. I guess its a lazy homeowner or contractor who couldn’t be bothered with tipping fees.
