agents and advisors at the office of Immigration Advice NZ at Harris Road on Friday, Mr Woodhouse talks to the Times He says that meeting up with local immigration agents gave him some valuable inputs. “There is nothing like hearing it first-hand from them,” he says at the office of immigration advisor Saif Shaikh and former Times columnist.

Talking about the current situation where racism is being (mis)used worldwide to fight terrorism, he says: “In a restless world, New Zealand has been held as an exemplar in terms of a skilled based balanced immigration policy. “It saddens me when xenophobes refer to migrants as “they” and blame them for the housing problem. Immigration is not the

dominant issue when it comes to rising house prices. That is a different issue. Migrants are strong contributors to the economic and cultural growth of the country.” However, there are times when he has to take a tough stand, more so when it comes to the much publicised case of deportation of Indian students. ➤ Turn to page 3

Hunt for stolen artwork C

elebrated contemporary artist Tiffany Singh has had parts of her art installation stolen at the Splore Festival at the Tapapakanga Reserve at the weekend. The stolen artwork is of the Singing Ringing Tree which was the result of a five year commitment and collaboration with a rural community in India, in an attempt to rejuvenate and bring awareness to the ancient craft of bell-making. The theft has created an uproar in the art community, with several

posts on Facebook expressing outrage. Ms Singh, known for her visually spectacular orchestrations of repeated forms using colours and significant materials to transform the mundane to sacred, says in her Facebook post that she does not make art for money “but for the joy of sharing and creating meaningful experience and enabling fair trade organisations and other socially significant organisations to continue their work through my own.

“This is what hurts the most. I guess to a few people it’s just ribbons and bells but the 700 bells and 3000m of ribbon were a rejuvenation symbol of a healing and collective space that the community can share and participate in. “I do understand the risks of exhibiting in public space but also think it is necessary to foster faith in humans and provide opportunities for education and joy.” In another post, the artist – who has had several exhibits at Uxbridge

Arts and Culture and the Fo Guang Shan Temple, says: “To the people who stole my artwork at Splore please think about what you have done and give it back. “What you have done is ruined five years work of a partnership between me and the artisan community of India. Not only have you broken my heart you have stolen at least 3K worth of materials.” “Don’t you know how hard it is to be an artist in NZ?

“All we are trying to provide is enjoyable experiences for you and this is how you say thanks. Wow!”

‘Best job in world, but quite complex’ Four injured Four construction workers have been taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries after a scaffolding collapse at Panmure Bridge on Tuesday morning. Fire Service northern communication shift manager Scott Osmond said they received the call at 9:50am and arrived to find one person trapped under scaffolding. Six people in total fell into the Tamaki River below and were rescued by fire crews.

➤➤From page 1 Mr Woodhouse says the media has not told the whole story. “We gave the students ample opportunity to leave voluntarily. Two have already done so. Also, six of the remaining seven have been awarded the qualification they came to NZ to study towards. So they have achieved what they came here for.” Of the total 191 students served the Deportation Liability Notice or Deportation Orders, 125 have left New Zealand. “Each case has been handled on its own merit. We wanted them to leave voluntarily and not force them so that they can go back to the country with dignity,” he says. He believes the fault lies with

fraudulent agents giving a wrong picture to the students. “We are also working on expectation management. I worry that students are being told a story of education being a pathway to residency in the country.” He says he has visited India and that Immigration New Zealand is working closely with partner agencies providing regular advice and information to education industry providers. Mr Woodhouse also mentions that there has been a change in the skilled migrant category. “We have worked on a higher skills visa and have raised the skilled based points from 140 to 160 points. “We are working on a

remuneration policy in terms of qualifying for residence. The announcement on skills is about to come,” he says. Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse with Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross at Immigration Advice NZ on Friday afternoon. Times photo Farida Master

New LJ’s restaurant in town W

hile LJ’s is certainly not just your average fish and chips store, their brand new restaurant-style outlet at 500 Ti Rakau Drive takes the brand to a whole new level. Located in the same block of shops as Kmart, LJ’s Ti Rakau has gone to the next level in their menu, store design and customer experience, with more on offer than ever. Loyal customers can be assured the classic fish and chip combo is still available, and the popular kids combos haven’t gone anywhere either, but there’s a few fantastic additions in store! The revamped, expanded menu includes a choice of grilled options presented in a pan, icecreams and green lipped mussels in a secret sauce. With a proper coffee machine on site, LJ’s Ti Rakau is your destination for your breakfast meetings, coffees and lunch breaks. “We wanted to create a classy yet affordable environment for the whole family,” said restaurant managers Mr and Mrs Naidoo. “In New Zealand, there’s no casual seafood restaurant... [and] the place was too big and the position was too great to just keep it as a fish and chip shop, so we went broad,” said Mrs Naidoo. LJ’s was the perfect launch pad for this phenomenal concept – new to New Zealand with East Aucklanders being the first to enjoy it. “It’s not just a copy and paste – it’s something new.” It’s all about creating an international feel to appeal to the whole community, said Mr Naidoo. The international concept was mostly influenced by ideas taken from South African food outlets, where the LJ’s head chef is originally from, and along with a few ideas brought back from Malaysia by LJ’s managing director, Ben Frewin, the international concept was created – with a strong

focus on including seafood cuisine from different parts of the world. It’s a store to definitely keep your eye on! “We want to create an environment where people can come have a meal of seafood, mum having the grilled salmon and salad, dad having the snapper and chips, and the kids also enjoying a kid’s meal of fish nuggets and chips,” said Mr Frewin. “We will also look to offer a very limited range of beer and wine to the menu – you always need a beer to wash down a snapper, and glass of

sav to wash down grilled salmon!” Mr Frewin knows of two other stores who will be transitioning into the new format sometime in the next month or two, and is excited about the potential to roll it out in other areas of New Zealand. “We are moving from a more traditional fish and chip offering, into a fast-casual seafood offering... [and] there is plenty of scope to roll this format out in New Zealand. “With New Zealand having the fifth largest Exclusive Economic Zone in the world, we are an ‘Ocean

Superpower’. “Seafood has traditionally been seen as an expensive meal for eating out on, and what we want to do is celebrate this awesome resource that New Zealand has, and offer it to the New Zealand public for a fair price.” Since the February 9 opening ceremony, Mr and Mrs Naidoo said the restaurant has been brimming with customers checking out the new design, tagging LJ’s Ti Rakau in Facebook posts and trying out new items on the menu. Green go-ahead for BotanyPakuranga branch ■■By Laura Brookes

T

he Botany-Pakuranga branch of the Green Party has kicked off to a grand start after the first public meeting was held on February 16. It was attended by around 20 people, including MP Marama Davidson, who discussed how she got involved in Green Party, what motivates her and why she believes Green Party policies and values are important for the future. The event also featured a segment with other 2017 candidates running in this year’s general election, an explanation of how the Green Party works and a

Q&A session. Campaigning, fundraising, markets, door knocking and event hosting are top on the list of activities for the Botany-Pakuranga branch in the lead-up to the general election on September 23, said event organiser Julie Zhu. The 24-year-old has been involved with the Green Party for three years, and said when she finally found enough time to dedicate to the establishment of a Botany-Pakuranga branch, she couldn’t wait to get right into it. It’s about bringing more awareness to the community of what the Green Party does, Ms Zhu said.

“Botany/Pakuranga has never had a strong Green presence so people don’t have a good understanding of what we stand for so it’s important for us to be able to reach out and engage with as many people as we can and we rely on our grassroots to do that,” she said. “This is a great time to grow our movement and presence in the area as we see inequality and fear growing all around the world with Trump and Brexit. As the rich get richer, the rest of us start to turn against each other in a bid to survive, when really, we should be challenging the system that we live in where those with the most power and privilege get to dictate how the

world works.” A Botany local, Ms Zhu ran in last year’s local board elections under the Green Party banner, is passionate about the Green Party’s commitment to “socially conscious values” and hopes to stand in this

year’s general election as a Green Party candidate for Botany. The next branch meeting is being planned for early March and is open to members and non-members. ➤➤To find out more, contact Ms Zhu at juliezhuu@gmail.com.

court sentencing

Men fined, lose boat and gear Three men were nabbed by fisheries officers with a large quantity of undersized scallops as well as some fish. their actions landed them in court and has cost them dearly ■■ By Staff Reporter

T

hree men have been sentenced and fined a total of $3750 at the Manukau District Court in relation to a raft of fisheries offences. They also had to forfeit their boat and dive gear. On February 2, Rian Stuart and brothers Tremain Maaka, Tobias Maaka were charged with possession of undersized snapper, undersized scallops and undersized kingfish. A total of 217 scallops were located by fisheries officers, of which 192 were undersized. One kingfish measuring 573mm (minimum size limit is 750mm) and two snapper measuring 290mm and 295mm in length (minimum size is 300mm) were also found. In court, all three defendants admitted the offences and requested a fine instead of community service. Two of the defendants were fined $1500 and a third was fined $750. A conviction and $500 fine was handed out to all three defendants for the possession of undersized scallops, as well as a mandatory forfeiture order made with respect to the boat they were using and dive equipment. The possession of undersized

kingfish and undersized snapper were classified as regulatory offences and therefore resulted in no conviction. A $250 fine, however, was given to all three defendants for the kingfish charge. The charge for possession of undersized snapper was discharged. Two of the defendants, Tobias and Tremain Maaka, were also charged with obstruction in the form of threatening language toward fisheries officers in the execution of their duties, were convicted and fined $750 each with the addition of court costs. Tobias was convicted of a second obstruction charge for failure to comply with the lawful requirement of a fishery officer, by dumping scallops into the sea after being instructed not to. The charges date back to the afternoon of October 26, 2015, when the men were found with undersized fish by three voluntary Honorary Fisheries Officers (HFOs) conducting routine fishing checks at Half Moon Bay. They noticed a small boat coming into the ramp, before it reversed and sped toward the ramp at Little Bucklands Beach. From there, it moved to Big Bucklands Beach, and the HFOs on

duty mobilised their unit. When introduced to the officers, the defendants confirmed they had all been involved in the fishing, and after chatting pleasantries, the HFOs declared they needed to count and measure the day’s catch before the men could leave. This was met with derogatory language, swear words and threats from the defendants, and when one of the men walked over and started to interfere with the counting process, he was warned by the three HFOs to stop what he was doing, and told he was obstructing

the HFOs in the execution of their duties. He ignored these instructions and proceeded to carry some of the catch back to the water’s edge, throwing a bunch of the undersized scallops into the water. With the continued threats, the HFOs started to feel intimidated and fear for their safety, despite remaining outwardly calm and in control. After a minor stand-off, one of the defendants was able to calm the situation, while one HFO returned to counting the catch and another

called for police. The fine given was a very lenient sentence compared with what the prosecution would have liked, said Judge Sharon McAuslan at sentencing, but gave credit to the men for guilty pleas and lack of recent offending. Two of the men have no previous convictions of this kind and all three have no record of offending for “a significant period of time”. One of the defendants also provided proof of completion of a voluntary anger management programme, which was to his credit, the judge said. She did, however, take a moment to ensure each of the defendants understood the situation “would have been quite frightening” for the HFOs at the time, and commented on the importance of protecting the fishery. All three defendants said they were remorseful, accepted responsibility for their actions and apologised over the incident. “Sorry. It’s the first time I did it and it’ll be the last time I do it,” said Tobias. “I understand they’re just doing their job.” Tremain also gave his “apologies to everybody involved”.

EDUCATION

Natasha’s story: from a debilitating setback to a positive life purpose ■■By Farida Master

Y

ear 11 Pakuranga College student Natasha Astill is excited about being part of a pilot programme for students with disabilities. The 15-year-old is the first person to be going on a regional exchange to Whangarei through Achieve 2B. Founded by Julia Hartshorne who has mild cerebral palsy, Achieve 2B is an intercultural exchange programme that facilitates national and international exchanges for young people with disabilities in New Zealand. Natasha says she is looking forward to meeting her host family who live on a farm with two girls and two boys. “The exchange programme will help me to be independent and boost my confidence.” Natasha suffers from Fetal Valproate Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder caused by exposure of the fetus to valporic acid during the first three months of pregnancy. Valporic acid is an anti-convulsant drug used to control seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. Natasha’s mother Denise, who was on medication for epilepsy during her pregnancy, gave birth to twins who suffer from the

syndrome. They were diagnosed aged four. Symptoms of the disorder include distinctive facial features and other musculoskeletal abnormalities. Looking at Natasha it is difficult to tell that she has visual processing and speech difficulties and other autistic traits. She’s had her feet and hammer

toes (a deformity of the middle toes which are bent at the middle joint resembling a hammer) operated on twice and is due for more surgery to straighten her toes. The teenager has been making remarkable progress in the last eight months due to an assistance technology programme and 20 hours of teacher aide every week.

Natasha uses a remote microphone hearing aid which receives a speech signal from a transmitter microphone that can be worn around the neck by a parent, teacher or coach. It enables her to process the information better as the speaker’s voice is delivered clearly into her ears. Natasha says that she was keen to go to Japan on an international exchange programme when she was in Year 8 but was turned down. “I was really disappointed then because they didn’t allow a teacher aide. Now I am so excited that my exchange programme of four weeks starts from March 3.” Natasha’s mother, who has been her biggest cheerleader, says her daughter has made remarkable progress. “She has found a voice and can express her opinion very respectfully. I want my daughter to be a part of the community she lives in,” she says. Natasha’s was the first case of Fetal Valproate Syndrome to be accepted by Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC ) for treatment. ACC will provide an exchange teacher aide and home support hours during the exchange programme.

Mrs Astill says this is a major breakthrough case with ACC. “I had consulted two specialists prior to taking the medicine when I was pregnant and both of them said it was safe for my unborn child,” she points out. After going through a long period of guilt and grieving, she later resolved to snap out of it and find out more information about the syndrome. “There was no one who could help me in New Zealand but I did finally get some information from the UK after which I thought, ‘what can I do to help others trying to cope with the same disorder’?” she says. Two years ago, she founded Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome NZ (FACS), a charity organisation focusing on support, education and awareness. Wanting to turn around the debilitating setback into a positive life purpose, she toured the North and South Island to educate those affected by it. Mrs Astill is now working collaboratively with ACC to bring out a toolkit to ensure female patients are better informed about the risks of taking valporate medicines during pregnancy. “It’s about informed consent in healthcare,” she says.

Let’s bin the bag! Say goodbye to rubbish bags because there’s a new rubbish bin service coming to you in September. Ferrari pick of the bunch ■■By Laura Brookes

H

idden away in a garage at the top of Mellons Bay lies the Ferrari F430 – one of only four with a manual gearbox in New Zealand – and owner Jamie Waugh couldn’t be more proud. He’s owned the gleaming red car for a couple of years now and is looking forward to showcasing it in this year’s Auckland Brit and Euro Car Show on March 5. Mr Waugh first decided he was going to buy a Ferrari while checking off his Kiwi OE in his 20s. He was living in Florence, Italy, when he took a trip to nearby Pisa, found a genuine Ferrari key ring and purchased it hoping to upgrade it for the real thing in the near future. “I said to myself, one day, I’m going to own that car,” he said. It wasn’t long before the father-of-two was given the opportunity to purchase one out of Whitford. Mr Waugh said it was a huge surprise for his boy Jordan, aged six, when he turned up after school to pick him up in the brand new car. “That was definitely a highlight for me,” said Mr Waugh. “He was so fast I reckon if I hadn’t caught him he would have gone flying through the window... he just wanted to get in that car so fast!” Made in 2006, the F430 Rossa Corsa with a beige leather interior boasts a traditional gated manual gearbox, testarossa style mirrors and 490 horse power at 8500rpm. Only five per cent of F430s worldwide are known to be manuals, and Mr Waugh said his car, which was one of the last manual three peddle cars Ferrari produced, is now sought-after by collectors. He’s always wanted a Ferrari, but considers himself more of an all-round car

enthusiast with an appreciation for all types of cars. “If we all liked the same, it’d be a bit boring, wouldn’t it? That’s why I enjoy the [car] show – everyone can appreciate everyone else’s car.” It’s the second time Mr Waugh has been involved in the show, after squeezing in a late registration to last year’s event. He had just returned to New Zealand when he saw the advertisement in the Times and quickly emailed the chairman of the organising committee, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, to get his car booked in for the event. Sponsored by the Howick Local Board, as well as other commercial outlets, this year’s non-competitive public event has 638 registered vehicles. It’s a 40 per cent increase on last year’s numbers, said Rev Dr Waugh. “Our committee of volunteers, helped by many local organisations, is very excited by the growth of the classic car show and we urge the people of East Auckland to support this large free community event.” Howick Historical Village will also be hosting a Live Day called ‘Trendy Trades of the 19th Century’ on March 5, featuring entertainment, the vintage tool club and horse and cart rides for a small admission charge. ➤➤The 2017 Brit and Euro Classic Car Show is on Sunday, March 5, 10am-3pm at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Entry is free and registrations for vehicles have now closed. For more information visit www.briteurocarshow.nz.

Presented by the Botany Charitable Trust, the concert is at St Columba Presbyterian Church, 480 Ti Rakau Drive, Botany on Sunday February 26 at 2.30pm. Franz von Suppé and Scott Joplin. Hielscher has arranged or transcribed many of these for the organ. A selection of American folk songs will also feature. “We are hopeful that a large audience will attend this special event and in so doing give support to its work in supporting youth and families in the Botany area,” a trust spokesman said.

Auckland Council is warning swimmers to exercise caution following reports of jellyfish at some local beaches this month. “Several members of the public have reported having been stung by jellyfish at Maraetai Beach, Eastern Beach and Mellons Bay recently, and we advise the public to avoid swimming at these beaches for the time being,” says the council’s regional environmental control manager, Marcus Herrmann. “Swimmers should keep an eye out for jellyfish when at the beach. If they are present, we recommend finding an alternative swimming location for the day. “We also recommend that parents closely monitor their children and pets near the water at these beaches to ensure their safety,” he says.

Medical advice

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says most jellyfish stings in New Zealand are not serious and, if given prompt first aid, people are not likely to develop significant symptoms. Symptoms of jellyfish stings include immediate intense pain, with burning and itching at the site of the sting. The sting often appears as a welt with surrounding redness. In rare cases, victims can develop symptoms such as breathing difficulty or loss of consciousness.

How to treat a jellyfish sting

stings with your bare hands. Place the affected area in warm water (45C). Do not apply vinegar, methylated spirits or alcohol, as these will make the sting more painful. Calamine lotion, antihistamines and steroid creams may be helpful. If the reaction to the sting is severe or the symptoms worsen, see your doctor. If the person has reduced consciousness or difficulty breathing, call 111 and ask for an ambulance. ➤➤For more information on jellyfish stings, please visit the Auckland Regional Public Health Service website or call 09 623 4600 for advice. ➤➤More information on water quality monitoring is available on the Safeswim website or by calling 0800 SAFESWIM (0800 723 379).

Twenty-two foot Sollittude, a Alan Wrigt Variant, was donated to the Howick Sea Scout group just over three years ago. Howick Sea Scouts Venturer Sam Rawlings said what started out as a clean up quickly turned into a full overhaul of both the exterior and interior of the boat. “Half Moon Bay Marina then jumped in and offered us the use of their hardstand facilities,” he said. Over the three years, every surface of the boat has being sanded, painted or had something done to it. “We couldn’t have completed the project without the help of some key sponsors, Half Moon Bay Marina, Southern Trust and Promapp, who all contributed financially to the project,” said Rawlings. “The boys have put a large amount of work into this boat and now that the boat has being launched, we will be using it for overnight trips and to build our sailing experience.”

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club CELEBRATION

HPCC celebrates 150 years O

n April 21, 1867 the newlyformed Howick Cricket Club took to the field against the visiting Onehunga Cricket Club on the Village Square – the ground we now call Howick Domain. Howick Cricket Club was formed at a series of meetings held in Whites Store chaired by Dr Hovell, who was prominent in Howick Village affairs and was elected the cricket club’s first president in November, 1866. The members played two married/singles matches and held practices to prepare for the first official match on Easter Monday. There was great excitement on the day of the match with most of the community coming to watch. The match was followed by a magnificent dinner at Howick Arms prepared by Mrs Brady. As was the custom in Victorian times, there were many toasts drunk and speeches made. The Howick Cricket Club was made up of local people who came from all walks of life. Howick was just a small village and very isolated from Auckland City and as life was so hard, people had begun to move away to the city or Thames Goldfields. Shortly after the first match, Howick Domain became unplayable due to its swampy nature. The club

Left, Kyle Mills, a former Black Cap and HPCC’s greatest player, becomes a new HPCC Legend on March 2, 2017; middle, an outstanding opportunity to join with Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club and hear one of the all time greats, Sir Ian Botham, on March 5, 2017; right, an extensive history of 150 years of cricket in Howick and Pakuranga to be launched on April 21, 2017. Pictures supplied

was offered the use of a field on Every Macleans farm on Bleakhouse Road. This led to a major change in the club’s direction. For the next 20 years, the club drew from the wider East Tamaki district, as Howick Pakuranga was referred to, and became known as Pakuranga Cricket Club, although there was always a Howick club in the background. Pakuranga became well-known as a strong country club that could foot it with city clubs when they met. In 1895 the Howick and Pakuranga clubs joined forces to play in the Franklin Sub Union competition, winning it four times before splitting in 1900 to Howick and Pakuranga.

The Fitzpatrick family were the basis of the Pakuranga club for the late 19th Century. Edward Fitzpatrick was an outstanding cricketer and is regarded as the father of Howick Pakuranga cricket. It was he who initiated the move to play on Pigeon Mountain Domain and he, along with his brothers John and Bill, who organised the club. The clubs stayed separated until 1935 when, once again, they amalgamated to play in the Manukau Sub Association competition. The fact was that players were turning out for both sides since around 1870 because the area could not sustain two full teams. The combined club was known as

Howick Cricket Club and Pakuranga Cricket Club’s name disappeared. After the end of World War II, Howick Cricket Club came out of recess and gradually built up its numbers as the population grew, adding more teams every year. In 1965, the club joined the Auckland Cricket Association, entering the Senior B Grade. It changed its name to Howick Pakuranga in 1968 because the committee believed it should take responsibility for all cricket in the area. Finally in 1976-77, Howick Pakuranga gained premier status and went on to win its first championship in 1981-82. The population of the district exploded during the 1970s and

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club matched this growth to the extent that by around 1980 it was one of the biggest clubs in New Zealand and has remained so ever since. In 2015-16 the club had nearly 1000 members. This season, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club members Glenn Phillips, Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme and Mitchell McClenaghan have either played for the Black Caps or are in the Black Caps squad, and Cody Andrews, Shawn Hicks, Danru Ferns and Donovan Grobbelaar have played for the Auckland Aces. Howick Pakuranga has come a long way from that day in April 1867 when the first Howick XI took to the field against the might of Onehunga Cricket Club. The club has a lot to celebrate this year and there are plenty of events planned. ➤ March 2: Induction of Kyle Mills as the twelth Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club Legend held at Clubrooms ➤ March 5: Annual Howick Pakuranga Dinner with Ian Botham as the main speaker at Sacred Heart College ➤ April 21: Book launch at HPCC Clubrooms of Jim Allnatt’s THE MIGHTY MAROONS – 150 Years of Howick Pakuranga Cricket.

Family day out

Down by the river side Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN captures the celebration of the iconic river at the Tamaki River Festival

N

ow in its third year, the Tamaki River Festival hosted on Saturday by the Howick Local Board at Bramley Reserve, Pakuranga was a great family day out. Buzzing with activity there was plenty of on-stage entertainment and fun activities that involved water walker zorbs, kayaking, sailing and canoeing. Captain Festus McBoyle and his motley crew of pirates was a fun act; while a bouncy castle, scavenger hunt, fishing games, education on seashore survival as well as Westpac helicopter-flight simulator made sure everyone had

something of interest. Some of the children were spotted having a chat about life with Harold the Giraffe, while others kept busy learning about estuary wildlife and gazing at shells display. Civil Defence tsunami maps, plans and tips for the area were also on display. “The great thing about this event is that as well as celebrating the marine environment that Howick people really treasure, it is a chance to champion local organisations like our volunteer coastguard and fire services,” said Howick Local Board member Garry Boles.

Ladies, hammers and humour Grab your gal pals and make sure you get yourself along to the Howick Little Theatre for ‘The Pink Hammer’, directed by Patricia Wichman. The upcoming Kiwi comedy is based on the lives of four very different women who each answer a flyer for The Pink Hammer Workshop, which is a ladies-only woodwork class. Expecting empowerment and sisterhood, they turn up and instead find that the tutor Maggie, who was advertised on

the promo flyer, has gone a little AWOL! Taking her place is husband Woody, who isn’t a fan of hosting a bunch of crazy women in his workshop, but as it turns out, he may not have a choice in the matter. It’s a production guaranteed to give viewers a laugh or two, as well as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life. Ms Wichman has been directing since 2011 and this will be her first show performed at

the Howick Little Theatre. She received first place in Acting at the National round of the World Championship of Performing Arts in 2010, and secured a place representing New Zealand in the International round held in Los Angeles. The production runs from February 25 to March 18 with both evening and matinee sessions available. ➤➤Visit http://www.hlt.org.nz/ for more details.

CX-9 is practically fun ■■By Alistair Davidson

T

here comes a time in life when candlelit dinners make way for drivethrough burgers, and instead of a romantic DVD and a bottle of wine when you get home it’s a Barney the purple dinosaur video with the kids. The contents of the garage change too. That sporty MX-5 convertible is history - in its place sits that universal symbol for middle age and responsibility: a MPV, or in modern lingo, a seven-seat SUV. “You know what honey? Let’s go for a fun spin along a twisty coast road in the people mover,” said nobody ever. Well, newsflash people: practical doesn’t have to be boring. Don’t believe me? Well, go take the latest, all-new Mazda CX-9 for a test drive and you’ll soon see what I mean.

CX-9 handles beautifully, and the electric power steering is light but has a good level of feel. The GSX model is offered with either two-or four-wheel drive ($52,995 and $55,495 respectively), while the $62,995 Limited tested here is all wheel drive only. The previous model had a V6 under the hood whereas this one, which utilises Mazda’s SkyActiv technology, has a 2.5-litre turbocharged fourcylinder. It’s a new engine, and one that’ll find its way into other models; think performance orientated Mazda3 and Mazda6. In CX-9, the turbo four is set up for real world driving, so rather than having heaps of power high up in the rev range it delivers a useful 420Nm of torque at 2000rpm. This means excellent throttle response and quick overtaking (particularly with the six-speed

auto in Sport mode), or relaxed effortless cruising. CX-9 isn’t boring to look at, either. Somehow Mazda has managed to make sensible look exciting in a classy and understated way. Sure, that big trademark Mazda grille is in your face, but that’s an exception; the rest of the styling is a case study in ‘less is more’. Same goes for the interior. Fit and finish is superb, and the choice of materials is what you’d expect from a high-end European sedan, not a sevenseat crossover. The middle row of leather clad seats is roomy enough for three adults, whereas as the third row is the kids’ domain. There are multiple ways to fold and slide the back two rows, so if mum and dad want to escape for a weekend there’s enough room to take those neglected mountain bikes off the garage wall and stash them

in the CX-9’s load area. The Limited’s specification is impressive. Radar cruise control with stop and go function, Smart Brake Support (SBS), lane departure warning and Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) and a headsup windscreen display add safety to practicability. A sunroof, tinted windows and a power tailgate are also standard fare. It’s quiet too, thanks to additional sound deadening and a thicker floor pan compared to the old CX-9. A lack of mechanical and road noise means that you’ll have to crank up the Limited’s awesome premium 294watt, 12-speaker sound system to drown out the kids asking ‘are we there yet?’ Little do they know, the CX-9 is so enjoyable to drive and comfortable that you’re taking the long way home.

From left to right: All-wheel drive CX-9 Limited rolls on 20” alloy wheels; the 8? colour touchscreen display can also be managed by a BMW-style rotary controller; the interior is like origami, with the seats folding every which way depending on the passenger to luggage ratio; developed primarily for the American market, CX-9 is big; it’s 1969mm wide and rides on a 2930mm wheelbase. CRICKET CLUB CELEBRATES 150 YEARS ❯❯ Page 11

Gillion shines at Futsal AFF Futsal representative Emily Gillion is one of a number of players who have seen the Women’s Futsal pathway come to fruition. The 16-year old Macleans College student took up the five-aside game less than a year ago, and already finds herself coming up against the best female talent the country has to offer. Gillion has earned selection into the Nic Downes-coached Auckland National Women’s Futsal League side and AFF Futsal Development Officer Marvin Eakins says the selection has come off the back of strong performances in the Auckland Women’s Futsal League.

Defending champions top seeds for Taupo ironman C

ameron Brown, honoured in the New Year’s Honours List, will look to further his world records after being awarded number one seeding for the 33rd Kellogg’s NutriGrain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo next month. Brown, 44, from Dannemora, is chasing his 13th victory in Taupo and a win will extend his global record for the most wins of the same Ironman event and the oldest male to win an Ironman. He will take on a powerpacked line-up on Saturday March 4, with the professional men’s field announced this week. Meanwhile top seed in the women’s race is American Meredith Kessler, who will chase a sixth straight victory in Taupo to equal the six wins in a row by New Zealander Joanna Lawn. The 2014 Ironman New Zealand champion, Marko Albert from Estonia, returns as the second seed ahead of Kiwi star Terenzo Bozzone, the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion,

Cameron Brown will be top seed as he chases a world record 13th victory at the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo next month. Photo Delly Carr

who achieved his Ironman breakthrough with a course record win in Western Australia in December. Fourth seed is Belgium’s Marino Vanhoenaker, the 2012 Taupo winner in the weathershortened race, who has 14 Ironman victories to his credit including a then world’s best

time of 7hr45min in Austria, a race he has won eight times. Fifth seed is Frenchman Cyril Viennot, eighth in Taupo last year, but with a win in Ironman UK to his credit. here are a number of talented Kiwis in the field including double Ironman 70.3 Taupo winner Braden Currie, who will make

his Ironman debut just a few weeks after finishing runner-up in the Coast to Coast multisport event, which he has won three times. Ironically, he will come up against the Coast to Coast winner Sam Clark who returns to join 25 male professionals confirmed for the race. Kessler has 11 Ironman wins to her credit after another outstanding year in 2012, as she returns to her regular starting race in Taupo, which has become second home for her and her husband. Second seed is Australian Carrie Lester, who enjoyed a top-10 finish at the Ironman World Championship, after wins at Chattanooga and Cairns. Colourful Netherlands triathlete Yvonne van Vlerken is seeded third on the back of seven Ironman victories and nine podiums including runnerup in Hawaii in 2008. There are 1200 entries from 49 countries entered, with the professionals chasing a $115,000 prize purse.

Your invitation to trial this new advanced technology at our Open Day Shopping centres, restaurants, meetings, and family get-togethers — these situations can all be hard to navigate when you have hearing loss. But they don’t have to be anymore. We call it a complex listening environment. You call it “socialising”. Finally there’s a hearing device that lets you hear what you want to hear, even in the most complex listening environments. It allows you to participate in multiple conversations, not just the one in front of you. Just like you used to. We’d like to tell you more about it.

Join us at one of our Open Days on Monday 6 or Tuesday 7 March and we’ll show you a new hearing aid that can make all of this easier.

To try it risk-free, Call (09) 533 6463 to book your appointment. Places are limited so call today.
