The dangerous Chapel Road Bridge is to be upgraded. The bridge, more than 60-years-old, has been the site of multiple crashes in the past decade. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said the upgrade was long overdue. Between 2006 and 2016, there were 56 crashes on this section of road - 26 injury crashes, including four fatalities and six serious injury crashes. “It’s just not good enough for this section of road to sit like it is for much longer,” Mr Lee said. “Locals will know this bridge as the narrow dog leg on Chapel Road by Barry Curtis Park and Sancta Maria College.” Mr Ross recently hosted Associate Transport Minister, David Bennett, and

Getting them to voice their opinions is something we need to crank. “How we learnt at school was a test asking us to write down everything we knew... [but now] we use brainstorms. No one is wrong in a brainstorm.” Informative, inspiring and interesting - those were the words echoed by parents who attended Back to the Future - an enjoyable, successful event packed with culinary delights, courtesy of the senior Food Technology students. The school plans to host Back to the Future 2 in March 2018.

Instead of a blackboard, we stared at a projector screen. Instead of shorthand and dictation, we talked out loud to one another, collaborating and presenting. Instead of a sit-down desk for teacher Amber Stevens, she stood in the middle of the room, keeping an eye over devices and checking we were on track with our learning. I was told if we were students, we wouldn’t have been allowed in the classroom without a device that day. How bittersweet. When I was at school, I wasn’t allowed in the classroom if I had a device, let alone if I dared to actually use it. It’s important to balance the modern with the traditional, said Mrs Stevens, who has been teaching

After a school tour led by prefects, 24 parents had the chance to select two classes to attend, with subjects ranging from Photography to Japanese to Social Studies. The first port of call for the Social Studies class was lining up outside for an icebreaker. “Are we kicked out already?” one parent joked. We all laughed – because we knew the reality couldn’t be further than the truth. If one thing was for sure, we were about to get schooled in twenty-first century education.

significant upgrade to this bridge with construction planned to start in the next year or so,” he confirmed. “Chapel Road Bridge is a particularly bad narrow bridge. “It was built in 1954 to a rural standard, with no pedestrian access.” Critically, it is also in the middle of a fast-growing community and is no longer fit for purpose. Currently, 15,000 vehicles a day cross the bridge. “With population growth anticipated to be one of the key challenges for Auckland over the next 30 years and with 40,000 people expected to live in Flat Bush, upgrading the road and bridge to widen it, to improve safety, and to provide pedestrian access is important.”

Barry Curtis Park a digital playground ■■By Farida Master
I
f you spot children excitedly running after aliens at Barry Curtis Park, don’t be too surprised. One of the world’s first digital parks, the spot is now officially a Magical Park. Recently introduced in parks throughout New Zealand and Australia, Magical Parks is an augmented reality mobile app by New Zealand start-up Geo AR Games, launched in 200 parks across Australasia. It is an app available on iOS and Android smartphone or tablets which creates augmented reality think Pokemon - worlds for kids to explore in their local park spaces. Magical Park has been made specifically for councils around New Zealand and the world for selected locations. Barry Curtis Park is one of the three parks in Auckland offering the geofence game. A geofence is a virtual perimeter for a realworld geographic area. Geofencing utilises GPS tracking. The idea behind Magical Park is to turn city parks into digital playgrounds for kids from 6-11. It aims to get tech-savvy children out and about in urban parks. You can download it by searching for Magical Park in the App Store or Google Play Store. These Magical Parks include two mixed reality motion game worlds – Augmentia and Dino Land. Augmenti is a fantasy theme including a giant blue dragon; while DinoLand allows players to interact with prehistoric playmates on large, grassy areas. “Kids can see life-sized dinosaurs and explore worlds filled with fairies and dragons,” says Melanie Langlotz, chief executive officer

Everyone has a stake in it,” she says. When the Times asked around if anyone in the area had a chance to experience the digital fantasy world at Barry Curtis Park, no one seemed to be aware of it. Top real estate agent Dynamic Real Estate agent Ellen Ming has one of the most recognisable faces on the Bucklands Beach peninsula and her journey has been an interesting one. At 19 years of age she established a clothing business in Auckland CBD that grew to employ several staff. A few years later, alongside her husband she opened and managed cafes around Auckland whilst maintaining the clothing business and starting a family. Once the children were through their primary years, she was finally in a position to move into the industry she had set her sights on many years prior – real estate. She found her negotiation and people skills gained in her previous endeavours to be a fantastic asset when navigating the real estate world. Ellen has consistently been an Elite Performer with Ray White for the 16 years she has been in the industry. Elite members represent the top 2 per cent of
the entire Ray White workforce based on sales. Her focus is on marketing homes to achieve the very best sale price for her clients and after 25 years of living in the community and knowing the houses intimately, is able to match the right buyer with the perfect home. When Ray White relocated its Wharf Road operation to Half Moon Bay, Ellen took the opportunity for a new venture. The Bucklands Beach office became a stand along boutique office, which enabled Ellen to focus on her own marketing whilst being part of the Ray White group. Ellen says, “we are very much part of the community” having helped hundreds of people move into new homes. “It is a privilege being part of people’s changing lives and seeing their dreams come true.” If you are thinking of selling your home and want to entrust it to a proven expert who has sold over 500 homes locally, do give Ellen a call.

Carol Rigby is no stranger to managing the accounts of Howick locals. She has run her business as a chartered accountant for 20 years in the area. With a steady stream of loyal clients, Carol focuses on small-medium businesses, property investment investors and contractors for accounting and business consulting. Carol offers a review after finishing a business client’s accounts which focuses on identifying trends in profitability and what their plans are for their business in the next year going-forward. “If it’s going down then you want to look at why that is and if it’s going up then you might want to canvas why that is and exploit that a little more,” she says. That opens up the conversation for the client to have a discussion around where they’re heading as well as looking through their last set of accounts.
Having an accountant is also an accountability factor for many, says Carol, who understands the importance of being able to bounce ideas off people and having a reminder to stay on track. Carol and her team work with MYOB and Xero and can assist with setting up the client with online accounting. We also monitor results so action can be taken where needed. They offer clients the opportunity to have the GST returns done for them which then allows Carol to monitor the updated accounts regularly. Carol offers a free half hour consultation where she discusses what will be required for their business. If you need your accounts sorted, some financial business advice or are starting out in business, head in to see Carol and her team for the complete accounting package.

A matter of conveyance Claire Ward loves to see people getting into new homes, especially when it’s first home buyers. As a legal executive with Wynyard Wood, her extensive experience is in conveyancing - property work focussing on sales and purchases. She also takes care of trusts, wills and powers of attorney, but most of her work is tied up in conveyance – a process she knows well from both sides. The 31-year-old bought her first property ten years ago and has since sold that and bought again. Wynyard Wood is a full-service firm, covering all aspects of legal processes. Claire has strong support with a team of 30 at her Highbrook workplace. Based in a very contemporary and cheerful office, there is plenty of parking on site and none of the hassles of getting into the city centre. After working for a period with teenagers (“the youth work was very different, but also involved good people skills,”) Claire began her studies for
her diploma as a legal executive through correspondence. She worked for one other legal firm before joining Wynyard Wood in 2007 and qualified as a legal executive three years later. A couple of years ago the company became fully computerised with all their files now digital. Claire said it was an exciting time for staff as they gained new computer skills and worked towards becoming “in theory” a paperless office with many advantages – such as speeding up access to information. Conveyancing can be complicated but Claire makes it all very easy and straightforward. “I can guide you right through your property deal and will be very upfront about the cost with an estimate from the beginning. “Come to us before you sign up so you can be sure everything is in order –from a LIM report through to knowing if a Methamphetamine test is necessary.”

How to lose weight healthily If you burn more calories than you eat, then losing weight will be a breeze. But, have you been working out hard at the gym or exercising vigorously but still can’t shift stubborn fat? Have you been trying different ‘diets’ but are still failing to lose weight? Are you constantly tired or in pain? “Losing weight is not just about burning calories. Other factors such as thyroid, adrenals and hormones can cause your body to hang on to fat. Some patients benefit from genetic testing to work with factors that inhibit fat metabolism. It isn’t just about what you do, it’s also about what you don’t do. My approach is personalised to each patient. Fad diets promising to shed pounds instantly can create problems from nutritional imbalances to sluggish metabolism as well as headaches and dizziness.” Irene, a qualified naturopath and medical herbalist, uses herbal and nutritional medicine and acupuncture as part of a personal healthy weight loss plan. “I help clients achieve fat loss, not loss of
precious lean muscles or just water. I always educate clients on how to read labels of ‘weight loss meals’ that may contain detrimental ingredients.” Irene uses scientific health assessment tools such as Live Blood Screening and Bioimpedance Cellular Health (BCH) Test. BCH measures body composition, cell quality, lean muscle, hydration and biological age enabling Irene to take a holistic approach towards weight loss. Originally, developed for monitoring postsurgery patients in a hospital setting, BCH has been used in several space missions to monitor changes to astronauts’ body composition. “At NutriActionz we use it to obtain a better picture of your health, and help you lose fat, improve energy levels and minimise fatigue. Gain an insight into your body beyond what the scales and mirrors tell you!” Book an appointment with Irene to lose fat, increase energy and slow down ageing. With every comprehensive weight management consultation performed before 8 April 2017, Irene is offering up to $60 worth of personalised nutritional supplements free.

Teacher barred for misconduct ■■By Nick Krause
A
Fundraiser
Delivery of Yellow books raise funds This month, around sixty community groups and local colleges are setting out to deliver Auckland region’s Yellow books. The deliveries are an annual part of fundraising efforts for schools nationwide, funding an array of projects – from playgrounds, to virtual learning programs, to sports tournaments. Botany Downs Secondary School will be raising funds from the deliveries of 14,000 books, going towards sending students on tournament week. “It lowers the travel costs; meaning hockey and football teams can head to the South Island – bringing the cost down to the equivalent of travelling to say Taupo or Tauranga,” says teacher Debbie McGregor. “We rarely undertake car washes these days, as they can be detrimental to our environment (soap suds down drains), and we don’t sell lollies and chocolate either, because that’s not healthy for the
kids. So, we really appreciate the Yellow fundraiser; it’s exercise, and it’s the most amazing team building exercise.” She says these funding initiatives are crucial because they open new doors for schools. “Even though we are within a higher socio-economic community and a decile 9 school, we still have children that we support with sports fees and uniforms,” says Ms McGregor. “And in today’s technological world – we want as many of our kids getting involved in sport as possible. Financial support is key in making that happen.” Yellow CEO Michael Boersen says, “Our goal is to help connect people and their communities, and schools are at the heart of this. What better way than to have Kiwi kids delivering the books themselves, with their efforts directly benefitting their own education?”

husband”. Mr MacKay – who emigrated to New Zealand from South Africa in 2001, insisted in his evidence the complainant had grabbed his hand and pushed it down. He said the other teacher arrived on the evening in question wearing a dress that in his opinion was not appropriate for a meeting with parents. The tribunal has since seen the dress and disagreed. The tribunal also heard Mr MacKay faced a prosecution in South Africa to do with allegations he had tried to kiss a student and tried to touch her leg. He said he was subsequently acquitted of related charges, although fuller details were not available. The tribunal said it preferred the evidence of the victim “and concludes that the evidence in its totality establishes that the events in the [place in question] more probably than not happened as she alleges”. “It is necessary to note that the tribunal accepts the evidence which came from several witnesses that there was somewhat sexualised and boundary-blurring atmosphere in some aspects of the life of the school as to language and behaviour. Mr MacKay participated in this.”

The decision, made in December 2016, found Pakuranga College teacher Wayne Glynn MacKay, assaulted another teacher (her name is suppressed) by placing his hand between her legs and/or pulling underwear to one side and touching her genitals. He was also found to have brought discredit to the profession by referring to her breast size. Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams told the Times it was unfortunate that it has taken so long for the issue to proceed through the Education Council Disciplinary process. “The incident occurred in 2012, over five years ago. “We were extremely disappointed in Mr MacKay’s behaviour and the school took immediate action, as would any
responsible employer.” He said it was clear that this was an isolated incident and students were not involved or at risk. “At Pakuranga College we pride ourselves on providing a safe and supportive environment for all staff and will continue to support those affected by this incident.” Mr MacKay had been newly appointed as a dean in late 2011 and he and the victim came to share an office. Evidence to the Complaints Assessment Committee heard she became exposed to more of his “overly familiar behaviour”. She felt he was becoming “domineering towards me”. She also said she considered his behaviour towards her became more overtly sexualised, “frequently blatantly looking me over”. Another witness gave evidence of the victim complaining prior to the incident - which occurred on February 29, 2012 at a parents evening – that Mr MacKay was “really intense” and “too familiar” and that she did not feel comfortable being in a small office with him. Among those giving evidence to the tribunal was Mr Mackay’s wife – also a teacher at the school - who said she felt the victim was “sexually interested in her

harged with energy, ASB Polyfest 2017 came to a foottapping end on Saturday. Polyfest, staged at the Manukau Sports Bowl, is the world’s largest Maori and Pacific Island festival with 60 schools participating, Prime Minister Bill English looked very relaxed as he spent two hours on the final day of the festival with his wife Mary who is part Samoan. He headed straight to the University of Auckland Samoan stage and later to the Niue stage before visiting stall owners and mingling with students. Mr English also spent time
chatting with Samoan stage coordinator Toesulu Brown, a familiar motherly face who has been involved with the festival for the last 40 year. The festival also had Minister for Pacific Peoples, Alfred Ngaro and league legend Nigel Vagana attending a function at the ASB Activation Marquee. From a small festival that started 42 years ago with barely four schools participating, to one that draws power packed performances from 228 groups, ASB Polyfest was buzzing with excitement with around 90,000 people attending over four days. celebration of youth performance had students simultaneously perform on six stages that included Cook Island, Maori, Niue, Samoan, Tongan and the Diversity stage.
Spectators were treated to a range of amazing Pacific island performances and kappa haka at its best with division one groups battling it out not only for the title
but for places in the national kappa haka competition. Also spotted were local schools like Botany Downs Secondary College, Ormiston Senior College and Edgewater College put their best foot forward to give an electrifying performance. Educational stalls like the Te Wananga o Aotearoa, New Zealand’s second largest education provider had students flocking in to partake in different activities, while fire fighters gave an entertaining demo to students on being fire wise. All in all, the festival that celebrates a fusion of cultures like none other, ended on a high note.

village plan
Looking ahead to the next 30 years ■■By Laura Brookes

vision for the next three decades of development within Howick Village is being put into writing in a Howick Village Centre plan sponsored by the Howick Local Board. The plan, which is currently being drafted and will need local board approval before going ahead for public consultation, has been “on the board’s wish list for quite a while” said local board member Adele White. The new proposal was formed late last year in light of a growing
need for a structured plan to take Howick Village forward. It’s not about changing the village, or taking away from the character and historic elements of the village, said Mrs White, but about offering locals and visitors the best of what Howick Village has to offer. More than 200 individual pieces of feedback were received through Howick market visits, concept boards, ShapeAuckland website and the Howick Village Centre Plan email address. It outlines four key concepts that have been developed based
on initial feedback – a desire to see Howick as a green village, an accessible village, a character village and a community village. Suggestions include planting more community gardens, building a wharf at Howick Beach, further development of historic walks that tell the story of Howick and embracing the role of the Village as an arts and culture hub. The draft plan was presented to the Howick Local Board on Monday March 20, and will be open for public consultation from March 27 to May 5. The final centre plan will be

Work is underway on Motuihe Island to upgrade kitchen facilities following a donation from the Howick University for the Third Age (U3A). The donation was gifted to the Motuihe Island Restoration Trust after various members visited the island to see the work that takes place. Volunteers co-ordinator of the Motuihe Restoration Trust, Fiona Alexander, said the money is being used to purchase a cupboard for storage, painting the kitchen in the woolshed and installing a new stainless steel sink bench, where volunteers have their coffee and tea. She hopes to have a new bench top stove and cabinets under it soon, and confirmed the work is due to be completed by autumn, when the main planting season begins. “Our volunteers will really appreciate this upgrade as the kitchen area has been in a very poor state for a long time,” said Mrs Alexander, who is a member of Pakuranga U3A. She visited the Howick branch of U3A in July last year and spoke about the work she does with the trust, inspiring Immediate Past President of Howick U3A, Tim Pearson, to organise a trip for members. The Motuihe Restoration Trust was formed in 2000, and since then has carried out significant works on the island, removing pests, planting trees and releasing endangered species into a safe habitat. This includes kiwi, saddlebacks, bell birds, kakareke and tuataras. President of Howick U3A Marian Heywood said the donation was given in the spirit of U3A, an international not-for-profit organisation that began in France with the goal of encouraging further learning for retired and semi-retired people. Meetings take place every second Monday in the month in the Nixon Hall on Sale St, Howick, beginning at 9:30am.

Your view Wheelie bins welcome Congratulations to the council for finally replacing rubbish bags with wheelie bins. Nothing was worse than bags which had been trashed by cats and dogs, also bags slashed by council employees in their quest to find a few grass clippings and/ or fallen leaves from council trees and then simply left on the berms because of petty council rules. Take a look around on rubbish collection days. Some houses have six to eight bags whereas others, because of a small amount of what council employees consider ‘garden waste’ are simply left on one side. We have, for many years, been on contract with Waste Care for

Government is to blame On the radio, Phil Goff said that rates will go up by 16 per cent because of the need to increase the capacity of the infrastructure caused by the influx of immigrants. The other option is for the
Governement to allow the council to make a congestion charge on motorists. As a superanuitant and a ratepayer who very seldom goes to the CBD, I favour the congestion charge. However these immigrants are supposed to be filling a gap in the work force but, in doing so, they create more gaps as they need and are entitled to healthcare, housing, social amenities etc so the problem never goes away. So the infrastructure problem in Auckland is of the Government’s making and they need to fix it otherwise the only solution for the ratepayers is to put them out of office at the next election and elect a government that will. Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

ow would you like to hang out with your favourite Sticky TV presenters Walter Neilands, Leanna Cooper and Jahmaine Paki? Or navigate a bush walk to discover native bugs with Rudd Kleinpaste; plant seedlings in recycled materials; learn how to use left-over food; blend a smoothie with bicycle power; watch cooking demonstrations and cultural performances; attend a recycled fashion show and learn all about what’s in your backyard at Eye on Nature. The Auckland Botanic Gardens is set to welcome thousands of school children and families to this year’s Eye on Nature environmental expo on April 1. With a vision ‘to plant a seed and grow a young’, the theme for 2017 is ‘Edibles: From the Ground to the Table’, encouraging children to find more sustainable solutions at home and in schools. The week-long event will be attended by 1500 primary-aged children from east and south Auckland schools. The idea behind it is to engage and inspire students to get real about where their food is coming from and to get active in their backyard. Around 30 environmental organisations from around New Zealand are partnering with the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust (MBCT) to host the event, with support from six Auckland Southern
Local Boards, Auckland Botanic Gardens and Second Nature Charitable Trust. Eye on Nature culminates in a free Family Day on Saturday, April 1. During the Family Day, budding chefs will demonstrate their skills in the ‘From the ground to the table’ cooking competition, with high school students competing ‘Masterchef’ style. Kindergarten and primary school children will show their creativity with a competition based on ‘edibles in unusual containers’. Once again, the search is back on for Auckland’s most promising, young ‘environmentally-conscious’ fashion designers. Eye on Nature concludes with the popular Wearable Art fashion show.

New exhibition explores pulse of life ■■By Laura Brookes
U
p and coming artist Yona Lee has opened her latest exhibition In Transit (Arrival) commissioned by Pakuranga-based Te Tuhi with a focus on the structure and pulse of civilisation. The 30-year-old based In Transit (Arrival) on the structural concept of how pipes direct and restrict human movement using 50 to 60 everyday objects, ranging from coat hangers to umbrellas. She hopes the abundance of regular objects will remind viewers to consider the objects that surround them, the infrastructures that mobilise and the systems that control. The stunning exhibition is made of the same stainless steel tube used for barriers and handrails throughout the world, and Ms Lee said she was reminded of how steel relates so strongly to everyday life while completing her residency in Seoul last year. “Pipe is a universal material that can bring different facets of space and time together. “We spend so much time on roads travelling, especially in places we don’t know. [When

I was in Seoul] it took me at least an hour to get to the supermarket, and I started to look at the aesthetics of the roads and the way pipes are used... it led me to think – we really do try as human beings to overcome that restriction of time and space. “You’ve got the internet, and transport... we try to be freer.” The talented artist graduated from Elim School of Fine Arts in 2010 and says In Transit is the largest, most ambitious and most expensive project she’s ever
worked on. The free large-scale exhibition is expected to wrap around different parts of the building so it can be seen from the outside and followed around the building by viewers. “I wanted to respond to the different spaces Te Tuhi offer and create more attention... it’s orchestrated the pathways. In a way, [visitors] will be performing the work themselves.” ➤➤In Transit (Arrival) remains open till November 19 at Te Tuhi.

■■By Laura Brookes New Zealand will hopefully be on the receiving end of increasingly innovative emergency supplies following Chair of Civil Defence for Auckland Sharon Stewart’s recent trip to Taiwan. The privately-funded trip was organised by Patricia Duke, a member of the Tzu Chi Foundation and was the second time Mrs Stewart had visited Taiwan. Over the course of a week, she and husband David were given the opportunity to visit hospitals, the headquarters of the foundation and recycling centres where the processing of emergency supplies takes place. At the Tzu Chi recycling centres, a 13-step procedure
involving 70 clear plastic bottles creates one double blanket with the ability to dry immediately after getting wet. By June 2014, more than 812,280 blankets had been distributed to disaster victims in nearly 30 countries from Tzu Chi volunteers worldwide. It’s an extraordinary use of sustainable materials and management of rubbish, said Mrs Stewart. “Tzu Chi Foundation is successful not only in solving the problem of the overused PET bottles, but raises awareness of sustainably living achievement and sharing information in regards to waste reduction. “I want to make sure that everyone is made aware of what they do – not only in New
Zealand, but around the world.” Mrs Stewart also had the opportunity to see purpose-built solar powered lights for use during emergency surgery with the capacity to charge phones in the case of a power outage, and emergency bedding used for emergency operations. One of the solar powered lights is due to arrive in Auckland soon. She confirmed some of the Auckland emergency services have already expressed their interest in the technology and how it can place New Zealand in better stead for dealing with future disasters. The Tzu Chi Foundation on Springs Road is organising a display of supplies for Civil Defence and emergency services.

esign & Build South East is a guide covering building issues in southeast Auckland. From Howick, Pakuranga, Ormiston, Pine Harbour, Beachlands and Maraetai, to Manukau, Takanini and Papakura, this annual magazine covers an area where demand for homes is at a premium. This special publication looks at buyers’ options within these unique communities from apartment to family homes; suburban to coastal lifestyles. We examine buying off-the-plan, subdividing large sections and opting for a smaller lifestyle block. Home renovation, landscaping, architecture, local infrastructure and more will come under the spotlight and there will also be a strong focus on town developments and the growth of amenities. With numerous choices available, we ask what are the real points of difference that building companies and home services offer? To help showcase your business we are offering an editorial bonus. Submit your editorial contribution (of approximately 250 words) to be run with all bookings over a half page – subject to the editor’s discretion and as space allows for smaller bookings. This full colour, glossy information guide aims to aid in the decision-making process. The publication will be available for pickup throughout south-east Auckland and online at timeshouse.co.nz.

Young guns blast Highlanders T
he Hurricanes have four dynamic 97kg young guns who are making an explosive impact on the Super Rugby championship that opponents are struggling to contain. They are Ardie Savea, 23, Jordie Barrett, 20, Ngani Laumape, 22, and Vince Aso, 22, who are prospering under the coaching regime of Chris Boyd and John Plumtree. The tigerish Savea is well known as a fast, attacking open side flanker. But it was his performance in the unfamiliar No 8 jersey that caught the eye in the Hurricanes latest 41-15 drubbing of the 2015 champion Highlanders in Wellington over the weekend. It was his low slung attacks from the base of the scrum that repeatedly penetrated the Highlanders defence before All Black halves PJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett set alight their outside backs with a swift service. It was Barrett’s brother Jordie who stole the night with a command performance, his perfectly weighted cross-kick giving Laumape the first try and his behind-the-back pass sending across centre Matt Proctor for another.

By game’s end Laumape and Aso each had two tries, the others falling to Proctor and the Savea brothers, Ardie and Julian. While the 1.96m tall Jordie Barrett’s favourite position is second-five where he has shone for Canterbury and the NZ Under 20 team, Boyd is convinced his best spot is fullback. Former Warrior Laumape is making a great fist filling the boots of World Cup hero Ma’a Nana as the Hurricanes second-five. Like Aso, who has played Mitre 10 for Auckland, he is a strong, nuggety player who relishes the contract and is quick to penetrate the gain line. With the Rebels threatening a major upset, it took the competition-leading Chiefs a long while to overcome the threat they posed before getting home 27-14 in their least impressive performance of the season. But blessed with a strong tight five that bested the Rebels and three others to give them a 4-0 win record, they remain serious contenders to add to the two Super 10 titles they’ve already won under coach Dave Rennie’s guidance. cost the Blues dearly in their 33-24 loss to the Crusaders after leading 21-5 at halftime. Same old, same old. However halfback Augustine Pulu has consistently impressive and it was good to see George Moala run with his old power and determination. With Steven Luatua currently suspended, Akira Ioane is not making the impact at No 8 his talent deserves. A fantastic sevens player, Ioane’s high body position and flat-footed stance make him an easy target in the 15-man game where he has failed to penetrate from No 8. At 1.93m and 113kg, he’s a big, strong player who is at his best charging onto a pass out wide a la Dane Coles rather than trying to brush off opponents from a standing start. ocal golfer Liv Cheng is moving closer to her goal of being the No.1 female player in the world after being awarded the KFC Golf Scholarship for the third consecutive year. the cut at the US Women’s Open, with her ranking falling just outside the Olympic qualifying spot. Cheng has recently completed the 2016/17 ALPG Tour season, finishing 15th on the Order of Merit. Highlights of the season included tying for second place at her sophomore Anita Boon Pro-Am, and tying for seventh place at the Brisbane International. Project Delicious is our all-new approach to food. The new menus are packed with new choices along with old favourites. Everyone enjoyed an array of meal samples, matched with local wines. It’s fair to say, they went down a treat!
Tried and tested dishes such as roast chicken rub shoulders with exotic newcomers including Thai beef salad. Developing menus with more choice introduces more complexity for our chefs, but residents are enjoying selecting from a new range of restaurant quality options. Ryman Hospitality Services Manager Andrew Gibson says “We’ve tried to get a good mix of the old favourites – with some much more interesting meals. A good example is osso bucco – cross cut beef shank – and we have developed our own calzone (pizza).”
