inter earthworks are rumbling along on the new multi-million dollar subdivision next to the Whitford Park Golf Club. The new development, to be known as Whitford Manor Estate, has seen almost half the 56 sites sold, ranging from $685,000 to $965,000. It will feature mixed model housing featuring terraced houses, stand alone sections and luxury apartments. A

neighbour of the Bucklands Beach home left sitting precariously on the edge of a collapsed cliff says she is disappointed with Auckland Council’s lack of concern for homeowners of Clovelly Road’s cliff top houses.

This follows a massive landslip in which a 10-metre high cliff face collapsed claiming half of a Clovelly Road home’s backyard on Sunday.

A slab of the deck has been left hanging over the cliff and occupants of the neighbouring properties have been warned off going too close to the edge.

The slip was filmed by Bucklands Beach resident Ben Dellabarca who says his dogs were underneath the cliff just moments before it collapsed onto Eastern Beach.

The concerned neighbour, who declined to be named, says these slips are devastating for home owners, and the process of making a claim with the Earthquake Commission (EQC) – who deal with these sorts of problems - can take months.

“Further down the road, a house was condemned just a few weeks ago after another slip.”

The Clovelly Road resident says taking precautions to protect her home from the same fate proved a lengthy and drawn-out process.

She says it took more than two years to have a retaining wall signed off by council that would protect her home from landslips. The wall was signed off just weeks before Sunday’s

“The council has today investigated the slip and its impact on the buildings directly at the top of the cliff face. We have also ensured the area below the slip is made safe for the public, including putting up signage,” Roberts said on Monday.

“Neither the property filmed by a member of the public nor two neighbouring properties are considered dangerous.”

He says unless there is further movement that directly affects any buildings, this is a private matter and will be dealt with by individual owners and EQC.

“When we bought this house we were told by the geotech engineers who surveyed the property that the land we were on could be unstable,” she says.

“We decided to put the wall in, but it just got held up by council. They made us bend over backwards to get it done and it’s only just been completed now.”

She says she is glad to finally have it completed, fearing for the safety of her home and her family.

Former Local Board member and Clovelly Road resident Steve Udy says people need to understand the dangers of chasing a beautiful view.

“There are a section of houses along Clovelly Road which are built in what I think is just a shade too close to the cliff. When they build those, they must understand Auckland’s coastline is fairly crumbly and there are risks,” he says.

Udy says there needs to be a sensible look at how many houses the Eastern Beach coastline can sustain and people need to be cautious when extending their properties towards the cliffs edge.

There needs to be clearer distance guidelines from Auckland Council, Udy says, to ensure property owners are building a safe distance from the edge of the cliff.

The Clovelly Road property of former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis succumbed to a cliff collapse in 2008.

“We need to be very sensible, the council, property developers, owners, everyone, and look at how much intensity can a fragile area like this stand,” says Udy. “I think Mother Nature is saying this is too much.”

Clevedon residents quarry battle underway ■■By Marianne Kelly A fund-raising campaign has been kicked off by Clevedon residents who are trying to stop expansion of a local quarry.

Auckland Council received about 250 submissions of which more than 200 opposed Fulton Hogan’s application for Resource Consent to expand its operation in McNicol Road, previously known as Warren Fowler Quarry. Truck movements would be increased by up to 1300 per cent. The company proposes to increase annual production over several years to two-three million tonnes a year. The quarry has operated since 1963 and is identified in the Auckland Unitary Plan as a significant resource for the Auckland region. It contains a large amount of high quality Greywacke rock which is used as aggregate in the construction industry.

Fulton Hogan says Auckland’s demand for aggregate is set to increase significantly. At the same time, supply is slowing as other quarries around the region reach the end of their lifespans.

The Clevedon Protection Society is calling for restrictions to truck movements. It’s not seeking to close the quarry but wants Fulton Hogan to urgently reconsider its application.

If the proposal is consented by the council, the society says it will destroy the unique Clevedon amenity and rural lifestyle. It fears the community and environment cannot sustain what is being proposed and the proposal must be substantially reduced so as not to create irreversible environmental and social damage.

The society is engaging legal and technical experts to represent it at the hearings which may be held this November or February next year. Its public petition currently has close to 1600 signatures and it is conducting a social media and community communication campaign.

Fulton Hogan is currently responding to the council’s request for more information. The company wants adverse effects, such as truck noise and vibration, dust and pollution, impact on property valuations and the social impact deemed out of scope which would prevent submitters presenting evidence on these issues at the consent hearing.

Currently the application is considered restricted discretionary which means the council can only control those matters allowed under the Unitary Plan. But the resource consent Independent Hearings Commission has suspended the out-of-scope request until all the council’s requests for information have been responded to.

It says the application may change to a full discretionary activity which would open Fulton Hogan up to all effects. The society says if this happens it would be a small win for the community.

At issue, a society spokesman says, is how the quarry expansion does not consider the housing intensification in Clevedon village.

“The effects are not just in Clevedon but also closely linked to almost identical issues which have arisen at the Brookby Quarry and Pascoes landfill.

“Traffic safety on the road network is a major concern. The roads are simply not up to the task.”

Ormiston Senior College students Cailey Dayu and Anthony Hua have just returned from the 59th London International Youth Science Forum at the renowned research university Imperial College London, and are both jet-lagged and geeked out.

Year 13 student Anthony says the experience at the forum where the theme was ScienceMaking Life Better was “phenomenal”.

Cailey who was one of the seven secondary school students from around the country to be selected by the Society Te Aparangi from more than 300 applications to attend the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) and also visit the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, says it was “eye-opening”.

Buzzing with excitement after attending a series of set lectures from top professors from all over the world, they are thrilled about gaining a global perspective as well as a deeper insight into science and its application for the benefit of mankind.

Anthony, who has always been interested in astronomy, dinosaurs and scientific biology, says: “It was fascinating to get

a greater understanding of the collaborative effort of a global scientific community.”

The 17-year-olds says that the two-week trip where they even had a fashion show based on scientific concepts, opened their eyes to the fact the scientific community is so collaborative. “It was fabulous to make so many new connections and see that so many diverse people put aside their differences of race, colour and culture and came together just for the love of science.”

he Cancer Society’s annual flagship event Daffodil Day – one of the most iconic fundraising and cancer awareness events in New Zealand – falls this year on Friday, August 25.

Over the years, the Cancer Society has seen progress both preventing and treating cancer, however, more people are still being diagnosed in New Zealand each year, and greater support is needed right across the country.

“There are over 22,000 Kiwis getting diagnosed with cancer each year, and it’s slowly increasing” says Daniel Glover, the Cancer Society of New Zealand Communications and Marketing Manager.

But there is hope – treatments are getting better, and research is providing results each year. More people are surviving cancer than ever before and this is a direct result of the community’s support to raise funds that are used for research.

“When people ask if the money they are donating actually makes a difference, we can say absolutely. But we still have a long way to go, so the research is vitally important.

“From research funded by Daffodil Day donations, we are seeing results in new breakthrough immunotherapy drugs and treatments, which are now available both in New Zealand and around the World,” commented Glover.

“Research is crucially important, but we also provide a range of support services locally right across the country, including: information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes” said Glover.

Now in its 27th year, Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and with its bright yellow bloom represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year.

T

he last few weeks have been tough for Julie Zhu. The Green Party candidate for Botany says she took a day to grieve and is now continuing her fight so that former Green Party coleader Metiria Turei’s resignation is not wasted.

With a background in arts, theatre, film and photography she is of the opinion that young people must be involved in politics.

The 24-year-old is passionate about standing up for what is right. “East Auckland has such a diverse population and I think leadership should be well represented so that people have an equal go.”

She says that being young and Asian, it is important for her to open up the gates for other young women of colour to feel confident enough to be heard and step into public life. “I never had an ambition to be involved in politics and always thought it to be distant and boring,” says the young actress, director and producer of theatre and films.

“I am standing for a party that believes in protecting the environment, social justice, reducing inequality and understanding people who are not necessarily like you,” she says, about wanting to change the fabric of society.

Currently juggling a 20-hour freelance assignment as outreach manager at the Red Leap theatre and a 10-hour job as programme assistant at the Basement Theatre in the city, she has her hands full with a movie fundraiser An Inconvenient sequel : Truth to Power for the Green Party at the Monterey Cinemas on Thursday August 24. She is also busy producing a live documentary theatre show titled OTHER [Chinese] at the Q Theatre on Thursday, September 7-16.

It’s too close to the General Election date and she moans saying, she doesn’t have the luxury of being a full-time politician. And while she looks at the back-benchers in Parliament and marvels at “the way they can dodge questions so well”, she says she is “looking forward to helping support the Labour Party and also hold them to account”.

I

’m fascinated by the business card Wetex Kang hands me. It’s heavy and embossed, a respectable card for the Maori Party’s first Asian candidate (he’s standing in the Botany seat).

The flipside is more intriguing and features a dragon, one of the most symbolic of Chinese emblems, and the taniwha, also a supernatural creature, this one from Maori mythology. It is not unlike a serpent or dragon.

The similarities provide another little clue to the thinking, and there would have been much, behind the Maori’s Party’s move to have this pharmacist beekeeper front them in an electorate that has been ruled by National’s Jami-Lee Ross since 2011.

Kang, of Malay and Chinese descent, points to the genealogical ties to Maori spanning several millennia.

It’s all in the DNA. The clincher for the Maori Party though would have been the Census stats. Says Kang: “Botany is an ethnically diverse electorate where 39 per cent of the electorate are Asians.” (More than 45 per cent are European and Pacific peoples around 12 per cent).

He was my client. We recently reconnected,” says Kang. 44.

It’s important to know Kang is multi-talented, and is not geographically confined.

“I’m a beekeeper. I have three businesses. I have a factory that makes health products like protein powder, capsules.

“I also work for Gloriavale – I would be down there to work with them.”

Wait, what? Gloriavale, the controversial, isolated religious community on South Island’s West Coast?

Yup. They need consultants too, one of Kang’s other skills.

He will offer advice on anything from regulatory affairs to, er, beekeeping.

Which is how he comes to be back with Tama Iti. “He’s a beekeeper. I’ve been training him for about

three months – four guys including his son in the Urewera National Park. Hopefully they can turn it into something more tangible for the community.”

Half his 600 hives are in Ruawai (30km south of Dargaville in Northland) “There is a teaching apiary at the college and we’ve offered apprenticeships there. There’s one at the moment. We want to take three more apprentices.”

Yes but how did he come to join the Maori Party?

“Initially it started as a joke then I went to the candidates’ workshop (which is) when I realised this was quite massive. Around 5000 years ago we had the same whakapapa (genealogy),” Kang explains.

“Tama Iti joked, ‘I guess we left you fullas behind in the waka’.”

Knocked on more Party values align than 3000 doors with community ■ BY THERESE HENKIN

S

imeon Brown was just 17 when he set his sights on parliament.

It was 2008 and after watching in admiration as his grandfather sat on the Eketahuna Borough council for years, he joined the National party, determined that he too would make a difference.

He may not have been able to vote at the time of the 2008 general elections, but he did learn what it takes to be a voice for those who need it, he says.

“I couldn’t vote but I tried to make sure that everyone at my high school who could vote, did vote. I wasn’t a disengaged youth,” he smiles.

“I am and always have been driven by my belief that this country can be better and politics is a way to make positive change.”

The 26-year-old brushes off criticism that he is too young to stand for the Pakuranga electorate.

“I’m only going to get older and wiser,” he says. “But I put myself out there on my experience and my determination to work hard for this electorate, be a strong voice and make sure that Pakuranga

is well represented in parliament.”

He says that if anything, being younger allows him to bring greater energy to the role and better reach the youth of New Zealand.

“I’ve recently graduated from university, I’ve got a student loan, and we’ve recently bought our first home. I understand the challenges facing young people and young families. So I think that helps me better relate to those issues.”

He says he’s determined to speak to as many people as possible, especially those who feel their vote won’t make a difference.

“It’s a matter of really making sure that they realise that their vote is their voice,” he says. He says representing all members of the Pakuranga electorate is not a responsibility he takes lightly.

“For me being a local member of parliament is about serving the community and being available and accessible, I want to demonstrate that through my campaigning but it’s also about going forward, if elected that’s how I intend to work.”

Brown has knocked on over 3000 doors so far, sometimes accompanied by his wife Rebecca.

“Door knocking puts me at people front doors where they are the most comfortable and I am the least comfortable,” he laughs.

“It’s also about listening to what’s important to them. If I’m elected I want to be someone who is known for listening to the community and making sure we take people’s concerns to Wellington.”

While the Pakuranga electorate seat has remained safely in the hands of National under Brown’s predecessor Maurice Williams since 1987, he says he’s not taking a single vote for granted.

he knows it’s a blue electorate, but Maori Party’s Carrie Stoddart-Smith isn’t backing down.

“I wanted to stand in a general seat for the Maori Party to show the bicultural foundation of New Zealand... and remind people that being Maori isn’t separate from mainstream politics,” she says.

However, she admits that with the Pakuranga seat being held by National for the last 30 years, it’s going to be a challenge. But she has a game plan. The policy analyst, who currently works in Maori development, says that while there are a lot of National voters in the area, with Labour catching up, voters would be smart to look at who National’s support partners are that might get them over the line.

She also points out that the Maori Party share the same whanau-first values prominent in the Pakuranga electorate.

“It’s not just about getting Maori to vote for me, it’s about getting everyone to see the value in having the Maori Party values running through our electorate. The Maori party values actually

align with the community.”

She says that although the Maori party is willing to work with either Labour or National for the good of the country, Jacinda Arden’s elevation to Labour party leader has given them options.

“Seeing a younger woman having that massive impact and getting people engaged again, is good, I love it. I think Labour has been idling by for so long that people were losing hope in what they could achieve.”

The mother of three says she is pleased to see votes moving from NZ First to Labour.

“The amount of support that NZ First were gaining –

given a lot of the things that they were campaigning had an anti-immigration sentiment, a protectionist economy sentiment – didn’t make it look like our future would be very prosperous or equitable with them if they had too much power,” she says.

Stoddart-Smith says what she wants to see are culture, commerce and community link up to create a thriving local economy in Pakuranga.

“We are trying to get more people involved in business to future- proof our workforce and not just the Maori workforce, but the entire country’s work force. It’s about ‘What are we going to do to create jobs for the younger people and grow our local economy?’”

She says a huge part of this is about bringing people together on a cultural level and encouraging the shared connections.

She hopes by forging strong international relations in the community and getting people working together would see growth in small to medium enterprises and family-run businesses.

“Better growth out this ways means hopefully we don’t all have to sit in the traffic to get jobs out in the city.”

Two ticks can change the world Of total enrolled voters in the 2014 General Election, just 62.73 per cent of those aged 18-24 voted. The 25-29 age group was slightly worse with just a 62.11 per cent voter turnout nationally. KELLY TEED wonders why.

I

t’s boring. They’re all as bad as each other. I don’t like any of them. They won’t do anything they say. My vote won’t count. I just can’t be bothered.

These are some of the most common excuses I hear from people who don’t vote. Low voter turnout is a serious issue. We all know this. We also know it’s even more of an issue among the younger generation.

In the 2014 General Election, just 59.22 per cent of 18-24 year olds in the Botany electorate showed up to vote. Pakuranga was slightly more active with 64.27 per cent of enrolled voters actually voting.

Ah, millenials. The reason for everything bad in the world. Or so they

say.

I am 24-years-old. I am what you would consider a millennial. You know – the lazy, apathetic, entitled generation who expect everything handed to them on a silver platter.

The ones who want to eat smashed avocado and drink barista coffee and have Sky TV AND Netflix and still want to own a house. The generation who just doesn’t care.

Except, hang on a minute...I don’t know anyone my age that fits that definition.

I admit, I buy a coffee on my way to work occasionally – maybe once every two or three weeks, if that.

I go out to lunch or dinner with friends maybe once every couple of

months. I have a gym membership and a Netflix subscription. Perhaps my only saving grace is that I don’t actually like avocado all that much.

Pester me all you like about saving and responsible spending of money.

In fact, please do. I’ll be the first to admit I’m terrible with sticking to a budget. But when it comes to real life issues - you can bet your bottom dollar I care. I care about people living in cars and in garages. I care about the seriously under-funded mental health services and our terrifyingly high suicide rate. I care about people being able to live properly, and although I’ve all but given up hope of owning a home in Auckland, I care about hard-working people

getting priced out of the housing market too.

And my peers care too. We care about the future. We care about the world we leave behind for our children. We work incredibly hard just to make ends meet. We leave university with thousands of dollars of debt and a piece of paper that in no way, shape or form guarantees us a stable job or income in a volatile job market.

Maybe the reason we come across as so apathetic towards politics is because we’re tired of feeling ignored. We’ve been repeatedly stereotyped and told how useless we are, that maybe we’ve given up trying to change those impressions.

But this is exactly why we can’t give up.

To my fellow millennials – the ones who are laden with debt, drowning in Auckland rent prices and maybe feeling slightly less than inspired about what’s in store for the future. We have the power to make a change in the world. I know it’s hard not to tune out when you hear things like ‘fiscal policy’ - believe me, I struggle sometimes too!

But next time you see a campaign flyer land in your letterbox, have a flick through it before you toss it in your recycling bin. You can change the status quo. All it takes is two ticks – and those two ticks might just be enough to change the world.

Farewell to Macleans stalwart After eighteen years as principal of Macleans College, Byron Bentley is set to retire. Reporter – and former Macleans student – KELLY TEED sat down for a chat about his extensive career.

‘G

ood morning school’. It’s a phrase any student or teacher who has passed through Macleans College at some point in the last 18 years will surely recognise.

For many, it will be synonymous with former deputy principal Jim Lonergan’s infamous “Roll call please” at the end of each school assembly on a Friday.

As a proud Macleans graduate, I have strong memories of the routine assemblies. The school would stand as the principal and head prefects would walk across the stage to be seated where Byron Bentley would deliver the well-known phrase and the school would be seated.

But come the end of Term 4, Mr Bentley will cross the stage for the final time.

Many of the former – and presumably the current – school community were shocked by the news – and after 18 years in the role, the surprise is understandable.

But “it had to happen sometime,” said Mr Bentley, smiling wryly.

He’s spent more than 40 years in the education sector – he initially cut his teeth in the role of principal at Western Heights High School in Rotorua for six years before moving to Macleans. His ‘have-a-go’ attitude has resulted

in a career spanning decades.

“I just thought it might be quite a good thing to do,” he chuckles.

“I quite enjoyed school myself and I thought I wouldn’t mind having a go at it – and here we are.”

It’s the people he thinks he’ll miss most.

“You’ll miss the students [and] you’ll miss the staff. Just mixing with people.”

As a student, you don’t often see teachers – let alone principals – for the kind of people they really are. They pile you with homework and assignments and occasionally scold you for being late to class, or an untucked uni-

But what we don’t realise until after we leave school is just how hard they work and how much they genuinely care about and want their students to succeed.

As I sat down with Mr Bentley six years after leaving the school – admittedly after I impulsively checked to see if my shirt was tucked in - I saw a whole new side to the man I listened to in assembly nearly every school week for five years.

His obvious passion for the entire body of the school – staff, students, senior leadership team and beyond – shines through.

“We’ve tried to keep going for

the last 18 years in my time… the aim is to have every student to leave here with a qualification – a ticket to ride – if you like.

“It’s got to happen. We’re letting them down if we don’t do that.”

He credits the whanau house system and the vast range of extra-curricular activities available as helping drive the academic success that Macleans has become so well-known for.

He’s a strong supporter of the music in schools – he says it’s “one of the crown jewels of the school”.

“I’ve loved the music ... the singing, the drama, the musicals. It’s huge here.”

Now in its 38th year, the school is no longer young, says Mr Bentley.

“When I started here back in 2000, it had two previous excellent principals and I was just hoping to emulate them and keep enhancing the school.

“I just hope that the breadth and depth of that achievement can carry on year by year – and there’s no reason why it can’t.”

After 18 years of school bells and routines, there’s no concrete plan for what’s next for the education extraordinaire. “[I’ll just] take stock really.”

As for that final school assembly? “I’m just going to have to steel myself.”

Hefty fines will be handed out after new legislation rules window washing illegal.

An amendment has been made to the Land Transport Act which says pedestrians who wash or offer to wash a vehicle or part of a vehicle on a road will incur an instant $150 fine unless the vehicle is legally parked.

The legislation targets those taking part in unsolicited windscreen washing at intersections.

The law change comes after Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross drafted a Bill in September last year to fast-track the ban on window washing and grant police the power to fine them.

Police and council have been calling for parliament to help them out with a better law to tackle window washing for some time and Ross is pleased to finally see this happen.

“Not every window washer is dangerous or intimidating,” he says.

“But police and the council have countless reports of window washers obstructing traffic, forcing their services on people who do not want them, or even attacking members of the public.”

Acting Inspector Stephen Richards says that for police, the law change is mostly about preventing harm on the roads.

“Firstly it is not safe for the window washers to be running in and out of traffic.

“Their safety is important,” he says.

“Secondly, members of the public have the right to be safe and feel safe when they are using our roads.

“The feedback we have had is that they feel threatened and intimidated when they are approached at an intersection.”

Barry Kirker, the Labour candidate for the Pakuranga electorate, has vented his frustration at the prospect of being charged $500 to do a meet-and-greet walk through at the popular Pakuranga night markets.

“As a local candidate in Pakuranga I get no funds from the party at all for the election and have to meet all campaign expenses myself,” he told the Times.

He has paid for his own election hoardings and flyers.

“When I found out the Pakuranga markets have a policy of having to pay $500 for a candidate to walk through there and meet people, I was frustrated as that is something I could not possibly afford to do,” he said.

“I had hoped for (new Labour party leader) Jacinda Ardern to walk through on a visit to the electorate but that could not occur due to cost and also the fact that National Party had paid for exclusive access on that night she was most available.”

Kirker believes the practice raises issues with access to information and barriers to democracy.

“The National Party can afford to pay the $500 so they are likely to be the only party that will meet local voters at that lively publictype spot. It’s like you can only access the people in certain settings if you pay.

He concedes he sent an email to the night market owners with a poorly worded sentence, “which in hindsight could have been construed as a threat, noting that ‘negative media coverage could be coming your way’.”

“I was meaning if people found out about this policy, they might be discontented and that could end up coming to the attention

of the media. Neither myself or the Labour Party intended to seek media attention on this issue,” he said.

“I have since apologised to the night market guy about that offending aspect of my email.”

However, he remains concerned that Pakuranga Labour is able to visit the night market unless it pays $500.

“There are no plans to take this any further.”

The NZ Herald reported that market owner Paul de Jonge said the decision to have “exclusive rights” for a single political party to campaign on any given night was because parties that campaigned at the night markets before the last election were “disruptive” to business.

The cost to political parties, which is about double that of food stalls, the Herald said, includes a prime double spot with table and chairs, and all-night access for party members to mingle with the market crowd.

round 40 chefs from five countries competed for two days at the International 2017 New Zealand Master Chef challenge held at the Fresh Factory— a techni-coloured studio building with full filming kitchen, acoustic curtains, camera, lighting and sound options.

Many guests from east Auckland made their way to the red carpet event with chefs from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.

Around 200 guests cheered as the chefs outdid themselves at the challenge hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Auckland, Chung Hua Woman’s Association and Taiwan Business Association.

The challenge was held for the first time in New Zealand along with the Taiwan Food Festival which follows the recentlyheld Taiwan Film Festival, and is a build up to the Taiwan Day to be held later in the year.

The exquisite works of art on a plate showcasing a strong sense of design, aesthetics and incredible skill made it very difficult for the judges to pick a winner.

The overall champions were a team of chefs from Taiwan.

Thrilled with the response, Dr ChungHsing Chou, director general Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Auckland, said that food has no cultural boundaries and is a great connector: “This is a great way to strengthen ties between Taiwan and New Zealand,” he said.

Two local police dogs played the hero on Monday evening after a handbag snatching incident in Dannemora.

A male offender had stolen the victim’s bag before escaping in a waiting getaway car.

Police pursued the vehicle but lost sight of it a short time later and abandoned the pursuit, The getaway vehicle then crashed at an intersection in East Tamaki and the four people inside fled in opposite directions.

Luckily, police dogs Bear and Brew were able to track down and locate all four offenders.

ocal primary students recently got down and dirty planting young native flaxes and trees as part of the Trees for Survival initiative.

Under the Trees for Survival NZ wide project, the children of Bucklands Beach Primary School have nurtured seedlings in their growing facility at the school and finally the big day arrived when the seedlings were ready for plant out.

Armed with gumboots, parkas and gloves, the students, along with several parent helpers, teacher Jacinta Howie, Trees for Survival facilitator Eve Clarke and Half Moon Bay Rotary helpers Irena Giles and Terry Daniell trav-

elled to Waiau Pa where during a long morning stint they planted out some 800 young plants to stabilise the land.

The site had been well cleared from gorse, hawthorn, woolly nightshade and other nasties and the soil was ideal for planting soft rich and full of worms!

Trees for Survival is an environmental education programme which involves young people growing and planting native trees.

The programme creates community partnerships by engaging schools, their community, local businesses and councils all working together to restore our natural heritage. The aim of the programme is to grow native

seedlings to plant on unstable land, to prevent erosion and improve stream flow and water quality, increase native biodiversity and offset carbon emissions.

It was also recognized that growing and caring for native trees had significant educational outcomes.

Rotary Clubs throughout NZ have been to the forefront of the project, assisting schools with their individual projects and liaising with councils and schools with the organisation and providing manpower assistance for the plant outs.

In its 25 years of existence, Trees for Survival has planted well over 1.5 million trees and is active in 133 New Zealand schools.

Young chefs prepare for the opening of a cafe S

tudents of Somerville Intermediate School are having a trial run for the opening of a new school cafe to be run by the students.

The official launch of Kawhe Hui (The Meeting Cafe) and the blessing ceremony will be held on Friday.

The young chefs studying food technology will be serving rustic pizzas with complementary vegetables, salad or fruit ($5). Rustic pizzas on the menu include margherita, hawaiian, meat lovers and vegetarian pizzas. Diners can order a side of kumara chips and tempura covered potato wedges for an extra $2.

No fizzy drinks will be served at the cafe. The only drink on sale is chilled milk for $1 or a banana smoothie (with no added sugar) for $2 a pop.

Food Technology teacher Debbie Thorpe who has initiated the idea says that the cafe that can accommodate 20 people at a time on Friday at lunchtime. It has already been fully booked for the practice runs.

Applauding dumping of DTI plans

PINZ gives market reassurance P

roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church has moved to reassure Kiwi homeowners about what to expect from the property market over the next two or three years saying that what lies ahead is ‘mostly predictable’.

Mr Church was responding to recent reports that property sales volumes have fallen by 24 per cent, nationally, over the past 12 months and that house prices are levelling off in most parts of the country.

Mr Church says that this is largely the result of the Reserve Bank Loan-to-Value restrictions which were first introduced in 2014 and subsequently increased in 2015.

He says the restrictions are an ‘artificial constraint’ and that there is still some question over whether they have ended the boom or merely temporarily slowed it – but he says his advice for homeowners is the same either way.

“We’ve been here before, many times – and we know what happens next”.

Mr Church’s advice to homeowners is threefold: Don’t panic – house prices aren’t going to collapse. While there may be small pockets of the country where prices drop a bit more dramatically – history shows that Kiwi house prices tend to settle, rather than drop, at the end of each boom.

If you don’t need to move anytime soon – current market prices are largely meaningless to you.

Typically there can be as few as three years and as many as five years between kiwi property booms – so if you’re not moving house you can safely ignore the next few years and wait it out until the next one comes along.

If you do need to sell soon – try and time the sale of your home to coincide with the purchase of your next one.

Unless you bought your current home in the last six months

you’ve probably done better out of capital growth than any small variation in value caused by the softening market – but you can further minimise this by buying and selling at the same time.

If you’re selling for a little less – you’ll also be buying for a little less.

Mr Church says the speed at which the market takes off again will be determined by decisions of the incoming Government, the Reserve Bank, trading banks, and councils – and he predicts the following: Changes to immigration targets won’t solve the housing crisis.

Regardless of who wins the election – immigration targets are probably going to be lowered.

If Nationals wins, lowering those targets will be part of the price of a coalition with NZ First.

If Labour wins, the same applies – and they’re also wedded to their own campaign commitments to lower targets.

This will slow down the pressure on housing – but it won’t solve it as the backlog is already around 40,000 homes in Auckland alone.

The LVR restrictions will come off at some stage over the next 12 to 18 months.

The incoming Governor of the Reserve Bank will probably ease, or drop, the restrictions on home buyers – but will be ready to clamp them back on if prices look to be getting out of hand again.

The current ‘rationing’ of mortgage lending, by Banks, is being driven by a mix of Australian Banking regulations and a desire to create a more ‘sustainable’ mortgage market where lending matches the availability of funds from New Zealand depositors.

Expect this to continue for a while – although it would only take a change in policy by one Bank deciding to aggressively chase market share and this could quickly change.

Mortgage interest rates are still on the way up – but not as quickly. While there is still an expectation that mortgage interest rates will increase – the consensus on the trajectory of that increase is longer.

Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church is applauding last week’s decision by Prime Minister Bill English to take debt-to-income ratios off the table as a tool available to the Reserve Bank.

Earlier this year the Reserve Bank asked for the Government to give it authority to use debt-to-income ratios – a mechanism which would allow the Bank to limit what borrowers could borrow to a multiple of their income – and was in the process of completing a round of consultation before formalising use of the tool. However, at a press conference last week the Prime Minister announced that the Government will not be giving the Reserve Bank authority to use this tool and also said that he saw no further need for extra tools for the Bank.

Church says that the decision is ‘fantastic news for Kiwis’. “Finally, we’re seeing common sense prevail. DTIs would have been a draconian addition to an already over-regulated mortgage market and their introduction would effectively have locked first home buyers out of the market. We’ve been a strong vocal opponent of this idea since it was first suggested and have been preparing a submission that was due to be submitted to the Reserve Bank by the end of the week”. Church has also welcomed the Prime Minister’s comments calling on the Reserve Bank to give Kiwis a timeframe for the removal of Loan-to-value rations. Mr English had suggested that the property market has come off the boil and that it was reasonable for people to expect the Reserve Bank to remove these restrictions.

“We absolutely agree. The Property Institute has led the charge against these restrictions.”

t’s not a game one normally associates with the young. So then what are students of an intermediate school doing playing indoor bowls and even excelling at it?

Principal of Somerville Intermediate School David Ellery says that a retired couple Graham and Nolene Wilson have been visiting the school every week without fail and training the kids to play indoor bowls.

“It’s a sport that you might not associate with children of this age, however they have taken to it like ducks to water,” he smiles.

“It’s opened up a different kind of sport to those who perhaps aren’t into the outdoor team games.

Graham says that it is a tactical game at a competitive level and it doesn’t preclude anyone on the basis of gender or gait.

“It needs more thinking than muscles, and we like to keep the medals coming,” says the 77-year-old who introduced it to students in schools to keep the love for indoor bowls alive.

Interestingly, Graham devoting time and energy to train students has initiated other partnerships between the school and community.

Seven ladies from the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village have started helping some of the students of Somerville Intermediate with their reading skills, which is turning out to be another mutually rewarding relationship.

“I went in there thinking I’ll do my best and use it as a practice for the biggest annual sporting event for 11-13 year olds at the Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools (AIMS Games) in Tauranga.

“It was cool it paid off. I didn’t know the prize we were playing for was to represent Auckland at NZ champs later this month,” he says with pride.

Other school students including Samuel Warren, Dan Nichols and Josh Kingdon have won medals at Auckland Intermediate Pairs Bowls Champs and at the Manukau Junior

Niall Vincer who has been playing indoor bowls for a year now says that 18 of them have been playing the game competitively.

“I think it’s a good sport because it has a degree of luck but also uses strategy, patience and skill.”

The 13-year-old who visits the Howick Club three to four times a week for extra one-on-one coaching sessions says that it also involves a lot of communication and teamwork.

He is now doing some serious training for the New Zealand championships coming up next week in Wellington.

Pinetree remains Kiwi immortal Farmer “Pinetree” Meads was not much heavier than 100kg in his playing days but, to rugby supporters of my amateur era, he was “the greatest”.

While most of today’s fans have switched that honour to Richie McCaw, I cannot separate them and can only speculate just how much better Meads would have been as a fulltime professional away from his Te Kuiti farm. Hard, fast and immensely strong, his courage was highlighted when he played in South Africa with a broken arm.

A gentleman off the field, he was a ruthless, feared executioner on it who wasn’t above delivering the occasional crunching punch. However he never intentionally put the boot in despite once being ordered off against Scotland.

Still, it was amusing seeing him adopt the peace-making role when breaking up skirmishes when in 1971 he captained New Zealand to their historic one and only series loss against the British and irish Lions.

In terms of character, strength and skill, Sir Colin, like Everest conqueror Sir Edmond Hillary, will remain a unique Kiwi immortal whose memory will endure.

From a humble, hard-working farm boy, he became a national icon.

t was fitting the All Blacks whacked Australia 54-34 in their Sydney Bledisloe Cup rugby test on the eve of Sir Colin Meads’ death.

Being a proud New Zealander and one of the game’s true legends, that win would have put a smile on his dial. However that fierce furrowed frown would have emerged in the second half when the Wallabies outscored his favourite team four tries to two.

Full credit for the Aussies gritty fight back after trailing 45-6 with a half-hour to play. But it didn’t say a lot for the All Black reserves who, under coach Steve Hansen’s reign, usually make a storming finish.

Still that first half was near perfection in amassing six tries through smart execution with Aaron Smith and Beauden Barret combining sweetly, Ryan Crotty running great lines and Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith all class on the wings.

Having started by misfiring with two offloads, Sonny Bill Williams recovered to run straight and hard.

It hasn’t been an easy year for him, starting late after recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered at the Rio Olympics. And being ordered off in the second test loss against the British and Irish Lions would have hurt his pride knowing it allowed the tourists to draw the series against his disappointed team-mates.
