he fourth victim in last month’s fatal Flat Bush fire was laid to rest yesterday afternoon at the Manukau Memorial Gardens. Refugee Council of New Zealand secretary Kaileshan “Kailesh” Thanabalasingham escaped the December 22 blaze and was being kept in an induced coma at Middlemore Hospital. He passed away just before 7am on Friday morning due to pneumonia. The 47-year-old escaped from his family home by jumping out of the window, onto the roof and across the neighbour’s fence but was severely burned. His 11-year-old daughter and 69-year-old father-in-law managed to escape. His funeral comes 20 days after that of his son, wife and mother-in-law. Family spokeswoman, barrister Deborah Manning, told the New Zealand Herald the family is devastated and have asked for privacy. She said family were with Mr Thanabalasingham when he died. The fire claimed the lives of his son Bareth Kailesh (5), wife Bhamini Theiventhiran (39) and mother-in-law Umadhevi Theiventhiran (66). His colleagues at Refugees as Survivors NZ (RASNZ) are devastated. RASNZ chief executive officer, Dr Ann Hood, said the organisation is deeply saddened to hear of Mr Thanabalasingham’s death. “Kailesh’s life encapsulates the spirit of what it means to be a refugee. Botany by-election 2017

Campaign

LOCAL BODY POLITICS

No billboard, no problem ■ BY LAURA BROOKES

“Y

our neighbours are your first relatives. That’s what my dad used to tell me,” says by-election candidate Nivedita Sharma Vij. It’s a sentiment she does her best to live by, and has now become the driving force behind her campaign to be the newest elected member of the Howick Local Board for the Botany subdivision. A New Zealand-registered nutritionist by profession, Mrs Sharma Vij loves to run nutrition consultations, diabetes prevention and management workshops, quizzes and cooking demonstrations. The 42-year-old was appointed a Justice of the Peace in May 2015, and currently fulfils her role working Tuesday evenings at the Ormiston College Service Desk and Thursday

evenings at the Botany Library Service Desk. She’s the only by-election candidate with no billboards on display, citing the importance of road safety as her primary reason. No billboard, no reason to take your eyes off the road, she says. Instead, Mrs Sharma Vij has been visiting community groups, campaigning on social media, encouraging people to voice their concerns through the online Have your Say group, connecting with Botany residents through Neighbourly, and interacting with locals in public parks and residential homes. Following the loss of her 16-yearold daughter, Mrs Sharma Vij decided to put her name forward for the position, to carry forward her legacy, and honour the wishes of her daughter. “My daughter had always been

an inspiration,” she says, “and encouraged me to hold a public office so I could promote fairness and accountability for all residents of the community.” Despite the recent tragedy, Mrs Sharma Vij says she feels wellplaced to accept the responsibility that the position entails. The Botany resident moved to New Zealand from India in 2002, and took up a job working at McDonald’s for three weeks to improve her English dialect and pronunciation before interning at Middlemore Hospital and pursuing her dream to work in the health sector. If elected, Mrs Sharma Vij says she’s more concerned with addressing the needs and desires of the community than blindly reinforcing her own plans. “If you’re in a position or have a platform, you’re there to serve,”

Nivedita Sharma Vij is motivated by helping others and longs to see the community act as a welloiled support network. Photo supplied

she says, “so it’s not about doing what matters to me personally. It’s about what matters to our community, and to our people. People are part of community.” She does have a few ideas up her sleeve, though. Mrs Sharma Vij wants to see better transportation solutions for East Auckland, and good-quality public facilities on offer for the community. She wants to make services people-centred, and put her Accredited Commission of Financial Literacy knowledge to use by examining existing policies, to

assess whether they are functional for today, and more importantly, for tomorrow. Mostly, she’s ready to listen, with high hopes the community she loves to serve is ready to talk – and no doubt, to vote. “It comes down to the importance of connecting with people... appreciating the good times, and walking with them through the problems they face with a solution-based approach. If we can do that, we’ll be alright.”

“I’m very concerned about crime – it’s a big issue,” says Mr Yap. “A lot of people don’t report it when it happens, and that’s something I want to change.” He’s also advocating for Kuan Yap integrated transport solutions, but says if there’s one thing he could work on, it would be the improvement of public facilities. Mr Yap says he would love to see the addition of a swimming pool in Botany, a digital technology library in Ormiston, an international stage for performers, and a community hall, or meeting place for all nationalities and religions. “People want places to go and activities to do. We live in a multicultural area, and we need facilities that are comfortable for everyone. “That’s one of the reasons I want to run. Botany is a newfound area. It’s not fully established, and with all the new housing developments going up, there’s still a lot that needs to improve. I can help with that.”

e’s a vegetarian who loves travelling, reading, and serving the community. Remuera resident Kuan Yap is one of seven candidates stepping up to contest the open seat on the Howick Local Board for the Botany subdivision by-election, after a friend suggested he should put his name forward. Born in Malaysia, the 59-year-old moved to New Zealand in 1988, and took up a voluntary position as a Chinese Telephone Counsellor with Lifeline. “When I first moved here, I noticed quite a few people were lonely, and struggling, so when I saw the advertisement for Chinese Lifeline phone operators in the paper, I decided to give it a go.” For almost two years, Mr Yap dedicated a few hours after his normal working day to speak with callers, only stopping because his business commitments increased. He also worked on a semivoluntary basis with Youthline, served as a Trustee of the Chinese Mental Health Consultation Services Trust and served as the Chair of the Finance Committee of

the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association, after being appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2004. Community comes first, says Mr Yap, who was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in 2012 for services to the community, and is a committee member of the Remuera Residents Association. With twenty years experience building and maintaining an extensive client base after kickstarting his own accounting firm in 1997, Mr Yap believes his financial experience will prove a significant asset to the board, helping to ensure cost-effective decisions are made with ratepayers in mind. Despite not living in the Botany electorate zone, the father-of-two says he knows and understands the East Auckland community, often hosting client meetings and attending voluntary commitments in the area. If Mr Yap wins the seat, he’s keen to minimise crime rates, by educating people on the importance of reporting crime and what they can do to prevent it.

he children’s wear chain Pumpkin Patch will shut its doors for the last time in just a few weeks. The receivers have announced the closure of further Pumpkin Patch and Charlie & Me stores in New Zealand and Australia. head office is in East Tamaki and there is a store in Botany. A further 68 stores will close this week with the loss of up to 560 jobs. In addition, two earthquake-damaged stores that are currently closed will not be reopening. Receiver Neale Jackson said that further closures had been signalled in late November 2016 when the decision was made to wind down the business after it failed to attract a potential buyer. “We have successfully traded stores through the traditional holiday period and

stock levels are now considerably reduced,” Mr Jackson said. The balance of stock will be consolidated in the remaining stores as the receivership enters its final phase. “All Pumpkin Patch staff are aware that the business is closing down and that stores will gradually close as stock is sold,” Mr Jackson said. Staff have been advised of impending closure dates and have access to EAP support (counselling) services. They will receive holiday pay, outstanding wages and other preferential entitlements (up to the statutory cap in NZ). “As a result, head office staff have also been given notice that their employment will be coming to an end progressively over the coming weeks,” Mr Jackson said. “This has been a very difficult time for all

Pumpkin patch staff. We acknowledge and thank them for continuing to work diligently to see the closure process through.” The remaining 56 stores will close as and when stock is sold, through to mid-February. Stuff last month reported Pumpkin Patch owes its bank nearly $60 million and its unsecured creditors another $13.2m. A receivers’ report by Brendon Gibson and Neale Jackson of KordaMentha shows the children’s clothing company, which was put into receivership in October, owed $59.5m, chiefly to the ANZ. Preferred creditors, largely the 1600 staff it employed in the lead-up to its receivership, were still owed $2.7m by Pumpkin Patch. Inland Revenue had not submitted a claim yet, said Stuff.

Did council arborists cut a tree down as act of retribution? ■■By Farida Master Council workers who were asked to prune a tree instead cut it down after an apparent “cheeky” exchange with a concerned resident. It prompted the resident Graham Pilgrim to contact the Howick Local Board. A strongly worded letter addressed to Local Board members from Mr Pilgrim, president of the East Park Resident’s Association, Golflands, got Peter Young, the newly elected board member of the Botany subdivision, wanting to nip the problem in the bud. The very next day Mr Young knocked on Mr Pilgrim’s door. Mr Pilgrim was livid that a cherry blossom tree in full bloom standing outside his home in East Park had been chopped down. Talking to the Times Mr Pilgrim narrates the sequence of events. “It was a wet October afternoon that I spotted the council arborists pruning trees around the East Park area.” Later in the day Mr Pilgrim approached the arborists and asked

Graham Pilgrim’s photo shows where the Cherry Blossom tree used to be. Photo supplied

them to prune the cherry blossom tree outside his home, “that had some deadwood on the top”. “And seeing that they were parked on the yellow line, I may have cheekily pointed it out to them,” he said. In response to the pruning request Mr Pilgrim was told that the

tree will be pruned “in accordance with council’s specifications”. “I was being a little flippant and said ‘so is the mayor going to come and check the specifications?’ ” In hindsight he admits: “I may have incited it. It may be retribution.” “Within minutes of our conversation they were outside my home pruning branches and before I realised what had happened, they had chopped off the entire tree,” he said.

“I was absolutely flabbergasted. I couldn’t believe what they had just done that considering the lower branches appeared healthy, and in full bloom,” he says. On realising how upset Mr Pilgrim was, Mr Young thought the best way to solve the problem would be to gift him a new cherry blossom tree. “Coincidentally, I had bought seven cherry blossom trees for my garden, and had a spare one,” says Mr Young.

“I suggested the idea at the Howick Local Board meeting so that we can quickly resolve the problem and move on. “Given the current situation, Graham has to wait for a year (until next season’s planting) and the tree which would cost $30 would probably cost the council $300.” Mr Pilgrim responded: “While I do appreciate Mr Young dropping in to find out how he can help, we have to follow council procedure and wait for one more year. ” Ross Webster, acting team leader operational management and maintenance at Auckland Council told Mr Pilgrim in a letter that the tree in question was assessed by a contracted arborist and found to be in “serious decline and partially dead”. “As you said in your email, the top branches were dead which is a very bad sign in any tree. The amount of bloom on the tree would have been in direct response to the stress it was under,” Mr Webster said. “Unfortunately in these cases it is best to remove the tree completely. In most circumstances trees that are removed will be replaced.”

Ben is the first New Zealander to become a Schwarzman Scholar.

At just 22, he is already a noted social and environmental entrepreneur whose work to make labelling of palm oil mandatory throughout Australasia has garnered widespread attention and accolades. He was named runner-up in the 2016 New Zealand Top Student awards and the EY Business Student of the Year awards. As a seasoned public speaker, Ben

is particularly interested in – and skilled at – engaging with young people around social and political change issues. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to pass on the lessons of leadership to a new group of our future leaders,” says Ben. Having already spent time in China and in the process of learning Mandarin, Ben says the opportunities afforded by the Schwarzman Scholarship are significant. “China is a fascinating place culturally, economically and politically.

“It has enormous potential as the world’s most populous country, and as it opens to the world and becomes wealthier it will play an increasingly prominent role in the world,” says Ben, whose interest in the country was sparked by the Politics paper, “China and the World”. Ben will specialise in either public policy or business and economics during his scholarship year, which begins in August 2017. He is currently working in the Climate Change and Sustainability team at EY, exploring how business can adapt to a changing climate.

Super sunset

Couldn’t resist sending you my photo of the view from up the hill taken just a few days ago after reading Gayleen Mackereth’s piece in your latest edition. I’m standing at the top to left of foot path on Stockade Hill, sea behind me, looking out towards the west. I walk up there with my dogs at least four times a week. It’s the best part of living in Howick. Bev Higham Howick

Please tell me who’s dumping this stuff?

I

am an early morning walker and just about every day I see rubbish piled up against the clothing collection bin outside the Pakuranga Kindergarten in Reeves Road. The collection bins are to raise money for charity but the charity has to pay the contractors who collect the clothing extra to get rid of other people’s inconsiderate (dumping of ) rubbish. I’m sure also that the people

who drop their children off at the kindy don’t like looking at the mess that is at their front gate. They must drop this rubbish off in the dead of night as it’s always there fist thing in the morning. Come on people - if you have to sneak out in the dead of night to dispose of your rubbish then you know that it is wrong. Clean up your own act! Philip Ayling Pakuranga

Trump protestors wasting time To the anti-Trump protestors holding up traffic in Auckland and throughout NZ and who wasted their time on Saturday, it would have been better use of your time watching the inauguration and truly understanding what the day means for America. As President Trump would say – sad, sad people. David G Mellons Bay

Lucy Modricker’s trampoline was thrown about during the storm on Saturday. Photo supplied

Car collects a little damage during storm My grand-daughter Lucy Modricker’s new tramp blew over the fence and landed on her dad Mark’s new car during the storm on Saturday night. Neighbours on Bleakhouse Road had to help lift it off his car and tie it down overnight. His car has a broken windscreen and damage to the roof and bonnet.

The tramp had a couple of broken poles. It’s a very strong tramp. It had to be dismantled to get back over the fence. It was very lucky it was wedged over the car as it could have damaged the house next door. Sara Downs Howick

he troubled upmarket supermarket brand Nosh – which has a store in Pakuranga – has been given a little leeway by its bank involving the sale of the business or winding the business down. NZX-listed Veritas Investments, which owns Nosh Group, this week announced ANZ had agreed to extend delivery of a proposal until January 31. Over the Christmas / New Year period, Veritas received a number of approaches from potential purchasers of Nosh. Veritas said its board is currently in discussions with several parties in relation to a potential sale of Nosh. The company announced in September that it had entered into an arrangement with ANZ in relation to the group’s banking facilities, the terms of which have since been formalised by the group’s entry into a revised facility in October. The revised bank facility agreement contains a number of undertakings and milestones for Veritas. “As previously disclosed,

Veritas has been undertaking a number of initiatives to improve Nosh’s sales and profitability and embarked upon a strategy to franchise the six stores that are currently under company ownership,” Veritas chairman Tim Cook said in a statement to the NZX last month. “This was one of a number of options that the board has investigated in connection with the future of Nosh and one that attracted a strong level of response and interest from potential franchisees.” Veritas, which also owns

the Mad Butcher franchisor business, was initially required under the revised facility to deliver by January 15 either an unconditional contract for the sale of Nosh or a proposal to close and wind down Nosh. The group is also required to close and wind down Nosh by March 31 if it can’t be sold by that date. Mr Cook told the Times there was no update and confirmed all eight stores are up for sale. Six of the stores including the Pakuranga Road store are wholly owned by Veritas while

the other two are franchised. “We are dealing with several buyers who are interested in buying all stores as a whole,” Mr Cook said. There is an issue with one of the stores though. “The franchisee of the Nosh Constellation Drive store has indicated its intention to operate independently of the Nosh brand, and has purported to terminate its franchise agreement,” Mr Cook said. “Veritas does not accept that termination, and the parties are in dispute over the matter.”

classic cars

Escort still a head turner ■■By Laura Brookes

I

t used to be one of the most common cars on the road. Now, John Metford’s blue Ford Escort is something of a rarity, attracting hand waves, whistles and all sorts of attention when it rolls around the East Auckland neighbourhood. Car enthusiast Mr Metford said it’s the history and heritage behind the faithful Ford Escort that makes the model so appealing. “They’re just everywhere. They’ve been raced, they’ve been rallied, your mum’s had one, your aunt’s had one. Everyone had one, and everyone can relate to them.” It’s the second year Mr Metford has registered his car to take part in the Auckland Brit and Euro Classic Car Show, sponsored by the Howick Local Board as well as other commercial outlets. Secretary Garry Robinson said organisers are well on their way to reaching their target of 600 vehicles at the free, non-competitive public event, with 527 cars currently registered as well as a few

motorcycle entries. Driven on 95 octane petrol with a 1300cc engine, Mr Metford said it’s his daily driver around town. The Pakuranga resident can easily recall conversations with surprised landscape supply store employees when he tells them to simply “chuck the sand in the boot”. “They look at me and say, “really?” I’m like, “sure bro!

Chuck it in, she’s alright!” It’s all a bit of a laugh... I’m not that precious about it. “From my point of view, there’s no pleasure in a car that’s locked up in the garage under a cover and gets brought out twice a year. The pleasure in a car is using it and driving it... so [mine] gets used in all sorts of weather.” Made in 1968 and purchased in 1974 by his

mother, the classic car has been well-looked after since Mr Metford inherited it in 1989. He’s personally restored the car twice, once in 1993 and most recently in 2012. It’s a job Mr Metford said can take up to a couple of years when he’s working, but he’s determined to put in the time to ensure every inch of the vehicle is proofed for future use. “I’ll paint it in the carport, or fix it up myself... you do what you can. It’s just nicer to drive around in a clean car. You have more peace of mind if you know it’s going to get you back as well as there. “People often tell me I’m lucky, but there’s really no luck in it. Luck is when you win the Lotto... not when you save up and you work hard, and end up with something nice as a result.” The 2017 Brit and Euro Classic Car Show is on Sunday 5 March, 10am-3pm at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Entry and registrations are free. Those interested need to register their vehicles by 31 January at www.briteurocarshow.nz.

Health care

Doctors’ visit becoming a challenge Age Concern is backing calls from the College of General Practitioners for the government to urgently train more GPs. “Older New Zealanders are really struggling when it comes to accessing essential health care,” Age Concern chief executive, Stephanie Clare, said. “They are finding it harder to get in to see a doctor, they are finding it more expensive to do so and they are having to cope with new ways of interacting with a doctor because of these issues. “For older people, these are very real day-to-day challenges. Training more GPs and enhancing the funding that goes into primary care would help to address these issues.” The Royal New Zealand

College of General Practitioners says there will be a significant shortfall of GPs in the next 10 years, and government needs to provide funding for at least 60 new trainees every year. The College trains about 240 GPs a year now. Currently 57 per cent of GPs are aged over 50, compared with just 16 percent in 1998, and the GP workforce is shrinking. Over 40 percent of GPs intend to retire in the next 10 years. Ms Clare says the GP shortage is already having a major impact on older people and it’s only going to get worse unless steps are taken now to address it. She is also concerned about the increasing financial burden that older people are under when it

comes to seeing a doctor. “The NZ Health Survey results in 2014 show that 14 percent of New Zealanders (over 500,000 people) chose not to see a GP because of cost. “Many of our members are among that number. They are on fixed and often quite small incomes. “We hear cases of older people putting off seeing a doctor until they can present with several health issues at once. “That’s definitely not good for anyone’s health and often our members are the ones who most need good access to health care.” The changing nature of the GP consultation is also an issue for older people, many of whom would have been used to having a life-long

relationship with ‘their family doctor’. Ms Clare says that has totally changed now. “You get to see the ‘doctor of the day’,” she said. “Again, that’s related to a shortage of GPs, but for many older people it’s very distressing because they have to discuss quite personal matters with a total stranger.” Ms Clare acknowledged the government only has so much money, but said investing in primary care will offset significant costs in other areas of the national health budget. “It will also have a very positive human benefit. “We fully support the College’s calls for more doctors and more funding of primary care.”

Real estate identity dies

■■By Nick Krause

Well-known local businessman and broadcaster Humphrey Beale has died aged 90. Mr Beale’s family said in a death notice he passed away peacefully on January 13. Daughter Helen Beale described her father as “the most amazing man I have ever known. He had a wicked humour, an incredible memory, unlimited knowledge Humphrey Beale of New Zealand’s history, and a particular interest and knowledge of the old ferries, buses (Edwards Motors), people, the Hauraki Gulf and its characters, real estate and later his travels around the world, and his love for Russia and his Russian friends,” she told the Times. “Humphrey was a very successful business man, a loving family man, and a loyal friend to many. He was a true adventurer and a very loved character and legend of the Hauraki Gulf. “I am honoured to have had him as my father.” A Herald notice said: “Late of NZ Herald, Edwards Motors, Beale Real Estate, Radio Pacific, Alcyone and much more.” Alcyone was his much-loved classic wooden boat. The 38-foot launch, waitematewoodys.com reports, was purchased by Mr Beale in the mid-tolate 1960s. He owned it at least until the late 1980s or early 1990s. “Beale was a real estate agent who used her (Alcyone) extensively for taking clients to Rakino, Waiheke and Great Barrier,” the site says. His real estate business formerly occupied the prominent spot near St Kentigern College marked by a distinctive block building which has housed various enterprises since. In a Facebook post Dennis Bloodnok wrote: “Sad to see the death at age 90 of Humphrey Beale, one of the hosts of “Open Country”, a nostalgia programme on Radio Pacific in the Fountain Court days. “Some will remember him for that or his Beale Real Estate place in Pakuranga. He was an enthusiastic broadcaster, and when a number of us were “replaced” (including him) by a PD doing what PDs do, he really missed the interaction with his many enthusiastic callers and fans. Another old broadcaster gone off air...May he rest in peace, and rise in glory.” Allan Dick also paid tribute on Facebook. “Sorry to hear of the passing of Humphrey Beale, raconteur and good bastard. His knowledge was deep,” he said. “Last time I saw Humphrey was about seven years ago as I was checking into a grand old pub in Geraldine as he was too. He was leading a bus tour and probably chatting up every single lady. Go well Humphrey.” Mr Beale, the only child of Clarence and Myra Beale, is the father and father in law of Terry, Tina and Eric, Steve, Helen and Ian, Michael and Susana, grandfather of Rhonda, Chrissie, Kahley, Anna, Marie, Matthew, Leon, Kayla and Hannah and great grandfather of 16 children. A memorial service was held on Friday at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club in Half Moon Bay.

birthday celebrations

Rose celebrating a very fine century ■■By Jackie Russell

B

eing vibrantly fit, healthy and sharp as a tack belies the age of a centenarian who astounds all those who meet her. Rosemary (Rose) Boyer celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday and a highlight was confidently striding to the front of the congregation at St Mark’s Catholic Church in Pakuranga. Mrs Boyer revelled in the singing of Happy Birthday, and receiving a special blessing and big hug from Father Emile Frische. “He mentioned my age and nobody could believe I was so old,” says Mrs Boyer. “It was the highlight of my birthday and in the afternoon I had a wonderful party with my family, some travelling from around New Zealand and Australia.” Mrs Boyer now lives at Ambridge Rose Manor in Pakuranga and the staff members love her company and stories. In 1917, John and Mary Collins welcomed Rosemary into the world at Mosman, Sydney. When Rose was 10, the family moved to Suva in Fiji, where her father was born. “It was the Great Depression and my father lost his job in Sydney and he went back to Fiji where he could easily get a job.” Rose went to a Catholic convent girls’ school, St Joseph de Cluny, and there was never a family car, so the sisters walked to and from school every day. Now, one sister who is a sprightly 97, lives at Havelock North. Their other sister died at the age of 93. The girls’ daily chores included sweeping and dusting the house before school without any modern work-saving devices – just a broom and elbow grease. Rose’s first job was as a bookkeeper for Sir Henry Scott, a significant political and legal identity in Fiji. “There was a large handwritten ledger and it had to balance every month.” The Collins sisters didn’t discover boys until they left school and Rose met her future husband at the local church social group – over ping pong, housie, euchre and bridge.

In 1942, Rose and James (Jim) Boyer married. “I couldn’t have a bridal gown because you couldn’t get any veils or dresses during the war,” Mrs Boyer says. There was a constant worry about a potential invasion by the Japanese and when an attack was suspected, Mrs Boyer rushed to put the company’s precious books in the safe. The couple had their first child in 1943, a baby girl Mary, who died at five weeks. They had four more children and it was tough for mums then with nappies washed with scrubbing brushes and wash boards, which demanded a daily 5am start. Mr Boyer worked in a wellknown grocery business, Burns Philp, and supplied raw ingredients for Mrs Boyer’s Christmas cake business. Annually, she started the mammoth baking operation in September and the small home kitchen oven could only handle one to two cakes at a time. Asbestos mats were in the bottom of every cake tin and not one ever burned. In the last year of production, Mrs Boyer made 1100 cakes that were sold through her husband’s shop. In 1959, after several years of managing Fiji’s Sigatoka hotel, the family moved to New

Zealand for the boys’ schooling. The Boyers bought the dairy across the road from Otahuhu College and they regularly sold super-thick milkshakes to a young David Lange who attended the school. They owned the dairy for 18 years until Mr Boyer died in 1977 and then Mrs Boyer lived with family in various locations throughout the Auckland region. At the age of 60, she surprised her family by taking driving lessons and obtaining her first driver’s licence. In 2002, she moved with her daughter to Abercrombie Street, Howick, and at age 95, Mrs Boyer moved into Ambridge Rose Manor. Her weekly routine includes shopping, library trips, dining at restaurants and cafés with her family, and attending St Mark’s Catholic Church. At her 100th birthday party the family celebrated her impressive age and accomplishment of five children, 11 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Messages from Queen Elizabeth II, New Zealand’s Governor General and various politicians were well-received. Mrs Boyer is still waiting for a card from the Prime Minister but maybe he can be forgiven as he only started his new job just before Christmas.

Raising funds for NZ Fire Service Botany residents can help raise much needed funds for local volunteer emergency services through Bunnings’ inaugural New Zealand Volunteer Fundraiser BBQ. To be held at stores across the country on Saturday, January 28, from 9am to 4pm, the volunteer fundraiser is to raise funds for New Zealand Fire Service. Botany residents are encouraged to support the New Zealand Fire Service by

ocal bowls star Selina Goddard has been named in the Blackjacks squad. Goddard, 22, this month won the Women’s Singles title at the National Open Bowls Championships in New Plymouth. The former Howick College student, who plays for Carlton-Cornwall in Epsom, collected her second career national title with that win in the women’s singles. She automatically gains entry into the World Singles Champion of Champions.Goddard represented the Blackjacks at the 2012 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her first national win was the National Fours in 2014.Meanwhile the Blackjacks squad was this week named by the new Bowls New Zealand selection panel of Sharon Sims (convenor) and Peter Belliss. With the departure of long term coach Dave Edwards post the very successful recent World Championships in Christchurch, a new 15-person squad was announced that will remain in place until the end of June 2018. Included in this period will be several events including two Trans-Tasman test series and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. “Given that every one of the team medalled at World Bowls 2016 and we have five current World Champions, the selectors felt it appropriate to largely retain the existing squad,” said Sims. Tony Grantham (North Harbour) and Paul Girdler (Dunedin) have been added to the men’s team while Goddard (Carlton-Cornwall club, Epsom), Tayla Bruce (Canterbury) and Mandy Boyd (Canterbury) join the women. Grantham and Girdler are both experienced international players and if needed can between them fill any position within the combinations selected to play. Goddard, Bruce and Mandy Boyd are also all capped Blackjacks. Goddard is fresh from winning the singles title at the recent Heartland Bank National Open Championships while Bruce was a member and lead of the champion fours team at the same event. Having missed the World Championships for personal reasons Boyd re-joins her sister Angela in the squad. She brings with her vast experience at skip in both the fours and triples and form that has led to numerous National titles and a bronze medal (with Goddard, Amy McIlroy and Smith) at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. “While this is our current squad for the upcoming camps and events, the door is far from shut,” Sims said. “We saw some performances at the recent Heartland Bank Open in New Plymouth that shows there are several players knocking at that door and if their form continues to demand selection then changes will be made. “As a team, we had a great World Championships but there is still room for improvement.

Education Term 1, 2017 Chinese medicine proves popular Interest in Chinese medicine and acupuncture is high, both amongst the public and with students seeking to study in the health science sector. The New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine (NZCCM) is experiencing high enrolment numbers reflecting both the strength of the College’s programmes and a growing public interest in natural treatments. Employment prospects for graduates are good with a very high proportion gaining employment on graduation. NZCCM located in Greenlane is a leading education provider with an excellent reputation. In November 2016, NZCCM was honoured to host the 13th World Congress of Chinese Medicine here

Australia calling: Meet ITC graduates working across the Tasman A funny thing happens when you study travel and tourism. You get bitten by the travel bug! That explains why so many ITC graduates leave beautiful New Zealand to pursue careers abroad. Our alumni are scattered all around the world, from the US to the UK, from Tahiti to Thailand. But no country has snapped up more talented ITC tourism graduates than Australia. Rahul Bhopatkar, Cabin Crew, Tigerair Australia: “After I graduated I moved to Melbourne to pursue my dream job as a cabin crew member,” says Rahul. He completed the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism

and Travel (Level 3) in 2013, and has some advice for future ITC students. “Stay focused on your goals and talk to your tutors for help or tips about the industry.” Rachael Southey, Backpacker Hostel Manager, Nomads Byron Bay: “My career has taken me to all of the hotspots throughout New Zealand and now Australia – for work and for pleasure,” says Rachael, who is living in one of New South Wale’s most idyllic beach communities. Byron Bay is well known for its relaxed, holiday vibe – think yoga, healthy street food and plenty of sunshine. But Rachael still proudly calls herself a New Zea-

lander. “Be proud of where you come from and learn what is in your backyard. New Zealanders are known to be the nicest people from the most beautiful country. Be proud and wave that flag high.” Ranjeeta Nair, Customer Service, Thrifty Car Rentals: “My dream job was to work at an airport, and now it’s come true,” says Ranjeeta, based in Brisbane. She moved to Australia after graduating in 2014. “Focus on your studies and your dream,” she advises future students. “Your dream will come true.” Raiha Hunt, Customer Services Officer, Jetstar Airways: “I

moved overseas and now have three children,” says Raiha, who juggles motherhood with her job at Avalon Airport in Melbourne. She graduated from ITC in 2010 and has since enjoyed a thriving career in customer service. “I love meeting new people, you come across some interesting people when working a customer service role,” she says. “That’s what I love about my job.” Gabrielle Patrick, Wholesale Travel Agent, Infinity Holidays: “I get to make my client’s dreams come true,” says Gabrielle, who has been living and working in Brisbane for three years. She spends her days

helping people book their dream holidays and credits ITC for helping her get to where she is today. “Everything you learn at ITC will definitely benefit you in this industry so pay attention! You’re doing this course because you want to work in the industry, so don’t give up and maybe someday I’ll see you at Infinity Holidays.” ITC is now enrolling for 2017. If you’d like to pursue a career in airline, travel and tourism, get in touch today – we’d love to hear! International Travel College, Level 1, The Pavillions, Botany Town Centre. Ph: 09-279 3525.

Education Term 1, 2017 Triathletes go well in Australia Local triathletes make their mark across the ditch in the 2017 Australian Junior Series. Over the weekend, Ainsley Thorpe (Howick), Dylan McCullough (Pakuranga) and Trent Dodds (Maraetai) competed in the second race of the series in the Gold Coast. Ainsley dominated her U19 age group with two wins and Trent finished second overall (U19 Male). Meanwhile, Dylan improved his race one performance (fourth-place) by two placings, which moved him into third place overall at the end of the day. The event was an opportunity for the group of athletes to rub shoulders with other young upcoming triathletes. The Super Sprint format presented a few challenges for the group but they all came away with strong performances and podium finishes. Ainsley and Trent were selected in the 2016 NZ Junior (U19) team to travel to the ITU World Championships in Mexico last September. Unfortunately, a week before the team were to depart, Ainsley broke her shoulder in a training accident. “Even though I couldn’t get on the start line, I still learned a lot by watching some of the best triathletes in the world and seeing how the races unfolded in the different age groups,” she said. Ainsley will be preparing for more racing in March and hopes to qualify for World Champs. “I have to make the most of my recovery with all my races being so close together. His loss not a mortal blow E

xpect more All Blacks to join Aaron Cruden in chasing the big money abroad rather than battle for a starting spot in the New Zealand rugby test team. Just as Nick Evans did so many years ago when heading off to England’s Harlequins rather than wait in the shadow of Dan Carter, Cruden, 28, has decided to shake off the spectre of Beauden Barrett by joining Montpellier in France at the end of the coming NZ winter. Having spent a long apprenticeship in the shadow of Carter, Cruden was expected to take over his mantle after the Cantabrian’s decision to retire from international rugby upon winning the 2015 World Cup at Twickenham. However an injury to the astute Chiefs pivot in an early test against the touring Welsh last year gave Beauden Barrett a chance to showcase his absolute brilliance. As Barrett’s manager Bruce Sharrock points out, his other clients, Waisake Naholo, Malakai Fekitoa and Liam Squire, are also considering their future.
