ngry, shocked, scared, emotionally disturbed and bewildered.

These are just some of the emotions children experience as they watch a parent being arrested. Being witness to a parent being handcuffed is traumatic.

The effect of imprisonment can be a long-lasting one, leaving children of prisoners alienated and stigmatised.

They are the forgotten people, the invisible victims of crime.

Research shows that children of prisoners are about nine times more likely than other children to be imprisoned later in life as they find themselves in a situation they didn’t choose – and yet have to face a life sentence of social deprivation.

Helping to bring stability into the lives of some of the most vulnerable children from five-to-17 years of age through a oneon-one mentoring programme is Pillars – a non-government, national organisation that provides specialised support for children and families of prisoners.

Recently recruited for voluntary mentorship, Whitford resident Rachel Peeters says that while the screening process to match her with a child took almost a year, the philosophy of helping

appealed to her.

“We are not social workers to fix things but are there to offer friendship,” she says.

“Looking at the broader picture that targets at-risk children whose parents are in prison, gave me an opportunity to do something I am genuinely interested in.”

The young family lawyer, also a former promoter of World Vision, says she has always been drawn towards reaching out and has done her bit of mentoring at the church and with another organisation in South Auckland.

The 25-year-old first heard about the charity in law school when one of her friends was doing a research paper on Pillars. Rachel felt her calling when she later saw it on her Facebook feed.

The idea of being a positive role model and changing the narrative of a child’s story is something Rachel feels passionately about.

“I have been matched with a 12-year-old girl.

“The first time we met, I took her to the zoo since she loves animals,” she says.

“She wants to open an animal shelter when she grows up.

“The second time we went tenpin bowling. She was good at it and won a soft toy.

“I want her to have a sense of self efficacy and gradually develop an attitude of `I can back myself’.”

Corrina Dixon, mentoring coordinator of Pillars, says that the family’s response to Rachel has been very encouraging.

“They said that things changed the day the 12-year-old met her mentor. Rachel is very special,” she says as she gives examples of other successful stories.

“At any given time, there are around 20,000 Kiwi at-risk kids that have their parents in prison; out of which 5000 are in South Auckland alone.”

Mentors bring more goodness, fairness and stability into families, says the 30-year-old who believes that it requires a lot of courage and commitment for everyone to come to the table.

“It is very brave for both the mentors and the families of offenders to come forward. I see our children as children of promise,” she says.

Mentors need to commit for at least a year with fortnightly meetings.

“They should be fun loving, flexible, have a driver’s licence and create an engaging space for the child they are mentoring.

Town centre teams with Sallies ■■By Bridget Kelly Botany Town Centre has partnered with Salvation Army for their five days of fashion.

People are encouraged to bring in their unwanted items of clothing that are in good condition, and exchange them for tokens, which can then be exchanged for other clothing items in a Stop, Swap, and Shop event. The Salvation Army will be bringing in clothes to kick-start the swap.

Any leftover clothes and all proceeds will go back into those in need who can’t afford warm clothes this winter. The week also involves a number of free events that will be hosted by a team of experts.

Retail Therapy Monday will be hosted by medical Doctor Dr Frances Pitsili, who will be speaking about holistic ways to stay healthy this winter, and how shopping can be healthy for you.

Kerry Finlay, Botany’s resident stylist from Mirror Mirror, will also be speaking on how to make a winter wardrobe work for you.

Woman who stole from father escapes jail ■■By Kelly Teed A woman who fleeced her elderly war veteran father of his life savings has escaped a jail sentence.

Carolyn Diane Alleyne, 65, was sentenced to 10 months electronically-monitored home detention at the Manukau District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to five representative charges of theft by a person in a special relationship.

She admitted to stealing $150,000 from her father, Ron Greenhalgh, who was a World War II veteran.

Mr Greenhalgh was living in a retirement home after being diagnosed with dementia when Alleyne began using her power of attorney to access his bank accounts.

When the funds eventually ran out and Mr Greenhalgh’s payments to cover his retirement home began to fail, Alleyne moved her father out of the retirement home into her Pakuranga abode.

When Ron Greenhalgh died on Father’s Day 2016, his son described him as essentially “a homeless man”, living in donated clothes and with no money.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mike Greenhalgh described his sister’s offending as cold, callous and cruel – words Judge Mina Wharepouri echoed when handing down Alleyne’s sentence.

At an earlier sentencing indication, Judge Wharepouri had suggested a starting point of 3.5 years imprisonment but this was further reduced due to a guilty plea, previous good character and the payment of reparation to her brother.

Outside court, Mike Greenhalgh said he was relieved the ordeal was over but would have liked the sentence to be harsher.

“I just look at the sentence and wonder how much that would deter someone else from doing the same thing.

t was a full house at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club early on Tuesday morning as the America’s Cup became New Zealand’s Cup. Locals packed the club

to see Emirates Team New Zealand successfully beat Oracle Team USA to reclaim the Auld Mug. Despite the early hour of the morning, all ages turned up to see the race, with some of the younger audience members suitably dressed in

pyjamas and dressing gowns.

There was tension, nerves and ultimately excitement and relief as New Zealand narrowly beat USA across the final finish line.

The 5:30am finish time wasn’t enough to deter celebrations though – free

glasses of celebratory champagne were flowing as the win sunk in.

Emirates Team New Zealand have already confirmed the next America’s Cup challenge will be held in New Zealand with a date and exact location yet to be confirmed.

How did you first find out about the quality of Ryman?

ith mounting frustration over increasing traffic congestion, there is a dire need for a central transportation hub featuring a park and ride facility, according to Howick Local Board member Peter Young.

He believes that the only way to tackle the traffic nightmare commuter’s face driving to the city from Botany, Ormiston and East Tamaki is to provide a free facility where people can park their cars for around 10 hours and board an Express bus to the city.

Mr Young suggests that instead of spending millions of dollars on the creation of a public park and reserve on the 53 acres of land bequeathed to Auckland Council, part of the Greenmount landfill could be used to create a central bus station.

“This would help to ease the traffic congestion to a great extent and help people to reach their workplace or university in city-central much faster,” he says.

The now-closed Greenmount landfill on the corner of Harris and Smales Roads that was once a quarry and then a landfill is set for a major transformation into a native forest with leisure areas like a children’s play park, fitness facilities, cycling track and off leash dog area.

Auckland Council identified $9 million last year for the transformation of the volcanic cone which was bequeathed to Manukau City Council by Sarah Lushington in 1940.

“The top half of the landfill with fantastic 360 degree views to the Manukau and Waitemata harbours as well as the city can be used as a park whilst the bottom half can be utilised as a central bus station,” says Mr Young.

“It would give people enough reason to avail (themselves) of public transport if they have a safe place to park without worrying about their cars being

towed away in an hour or two from shopping malls.”

Having lived in Hong Kong which has successfully dealt with traffic problems, he says Greenmount is an ideal place since Ormiston Town Centre is already too crowded to afford a vast space for a park and ride.

“There is also a suggestion of a multi-storey car park facility near Pak’nSave.”

But, he says, that would again cost the council millions of dollars.

“We are so fortunate to have been gifted this land which is an ideal legacy that we could put to good use by partly utilising it to solve the growing traffic problem.

“Besides, we already have five big parks in the area.”

Mr Young suggests that locals should voice their opinion and give their feedback in the questionnaire provided in the summary of the draft Howick Local Board Plan 2017.

Katrina Bungard: The concept of a transport hub certainly sounds like a project worthy of investigation.

In theory, I am supportive of anything that could potentially assist in easing our traffic congestion issues. However, there is a proper process to go through involving consultation and the viability of such a project on this particular site, given the nature of the previous land use. We are still awaiting the transfer of the land use for park purposes, and so although we are certainly moving forward as fast as

Garry Boles: Aren’t parks meant to be sacred land where you can go with the family? I think a lot of research needs to be done before any major step like this is taken.

Don’t the buses feed through all the main residential areas anyways? Am not sure how this is going to work.

howick local board members respond: David Collings: I am very supportive of making our public transport system efficient and the idea of more Express buses has some merit, however I’m disappointed Mr Young has not asked for information regarding park and ride as we had a previous board member introduce such a scheme from Lloyd Elsmore Park that wasted $70k. I’m not in the business of wasting ratepayer funds and nor is the board and we would need to get good advice before considering any options.

U3A Ormiston had a display on two of the “Gold Card Tuesdays” at Highland Park and were well-satisfied with the result.

We met and talked to a lot of people, and distributed well over 100 flyers - so Gold Card Tuesday certainly helped us to get the word out there.

We had our monthly U3A meeting today, and had several visitors. Five of them were people we met and talked to at Gold Card Tuesday so it definitely paid off for us.We also enjoyed meeting Simeon Brown. He is likely to be MP for Pakuranga for 40 years or so!

This doesn’t make sense

It’s difficult to fathom why the Howick Local Board would want to consider the possibility of providing “free” entry, by way of a targeted rate, into the area’s only public swimming pool at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

A targeted rate will force those who never use the pool to bear the cost of those do.

It is unclear what the rationale for this is. There has been no decrease in the number of people using the pool. In fact, patronage from 2015 to 2016 increased by almost 13 per cent to over 620,000 visits and a recent survey by Auckland Council staff concluded that one barrier to pool visits was overcrowding. Providing “free” entry will only exacerbate that and result in higher operating costs.

Council staff also identified that there has been a drop in Chinese pool visits and suggested that this could be fixed by providing “free” entry to Chinese people. Sadly, picking out different ethnic groups for special treatment is all too prevalent on the Auckland Council. There has been no attempt made to determine why there has been a drop in Chinese visitations.

Every day we make decisions about what we are prepared to pay for and how much we are prepared to pay. Could it possibly be that some people have decided that they would prefer to spend money on other recreational activities?

Z Highbrook install recycling facilities Z

Energy is installing new forecourt recycling facilities at 117 of its retail sites with a grant of $218,000 from the Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund.

Associate Environment Minister Scott Simpson announced the new initiative at a pilot forecourt on Highbrook Drive in East Tamaki last Friday.

“Z Energy has developed a modular forecourt bin comprised of separate compartments for waste, glass, plastic and cans, and Z compostable coffee cups,” Mr Simpson said.

“The aim is to reduce the amount of waste Z Energy send to landfill by 40 per cent. This project gives both Z Energy staff and customers the opportunity to embrace recycling.”

Trial bins are being piloted at three Z Energy Sites in Auckland with more to be rolled out around the country later this year.

“Z Energy has made a commitment to promote sustainability.

“This project provides a great example of how businesses and New Zealanders can make changes every day to divert large amounts of waste from ending up in landfill.”

The Waste Minimisation Fund was established in 2009 and is funded by a levy of $10 per tonne charged on waste disposed of at landfills. The fund’s purpose is to boost New Zealand’s performance in waste minimisation, by reducing waste and increasing the recovery of useful resources from waste.

Cost of building up 3.5 per cent The latest QVcostbuilder data shows the average cost of building a new home in New Zealand’s four largest cities has risen on average by 3.5 per cent in the year to May 2017 and a total of 25.5 per cent since the previous peak of 2007.

QVcostbuilder is an arm of state-owned enterprise, Quotable Value (QV) and provides the latest construction cost data to the

property and construction industries through an online subscription web platform tool, which can be accessed on any device.

It also shows the average cost of building a standard 140m², 3 bedroom, one bathroom home rose by the most in the Wellington in the year to May, up 2.43 per cent to an average cost of $258,000.

This compares to Auckland where costs rose 2.32 per cent

to $272,000; Dunedin, where costs rose 2.12 per cent to $254,000; and Christchurch where they rose by the least over the past year, by 1.92 per cent to $277,375.

QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush said Auckland and Christchurch still remain the most expensive places to build a home out of the four cities measured by QVcostbuilder.

skilled panel of architectural practitioners and experts has revealed small homes are the stand-out entries as the 2017 ADNZ - Resene Architectural Design Awards season begins.

Judge Michael Davis who is director of Architecture Programmes at the University of Auckland says while the overall number of entries this year is fewer than last year’s, the quality is higher.

He says the small homes (up to 150sqm) category is particularly rich, in terms of quality of design.

Mysterious SUV worth a look-over ■■By Alistair Davidson

‘M

U’ in MU-X is short for ‘Mysterious Utility’, one of those odd old-school Japanese model names that lose something in the translation.

The real mystery is why Isuzu MU-X hasn’t achieved greater market penetration.

In the three years this large SUV has been available in New Zealand, it has made up just 10 per cent of Isuzu’s total volume.

It’s not the flashest looking SUV around, and neither is it the cheapest in its class, but like a good front-row forward, MU-X is a reliable workhorse with a big heart that gets the job done.

Like most SUVs, this Isuzu is perfectly happy doing the school run (it’s a true seven-seater). But hitch a big boat on its towbar or venture off-road and it shines.

Isuzu builds trucks. Lots of trucks.

It’s also the biggest diesel engine manufacturer in the world.

That’s why this tough SUV has dual-range four-wheel drive, a full ladder chassis, and a torquey 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine under its bonnet.

At the launch of the 2017 MU-X that has just had a ‘big running change’ (which is more than a minor facelift, less than a new model, according to Isuzu), Isuzu Utes New Zealand general manager Murray Greenhalgh explained that this SUV attracts three types of buyers.

or MU for example, and want another Isuzu.

“Then there are the serious fourwheel-drivers who want a vehicle that can handle rough conditions.

Thirdly, there’s the towing crowd.

MU-X is a big, heavy vehicle that will tow 3000kg, day in and day out, and enjoy the process.”

MU-X’s ‘big running change’ consists of new colours; a new grille, headlights and bumper that flow into a revised bonnet line; and a new rear bumper and spoiler.

Daytime running lights are now standard, as are projector beam headlamps with autolevelling.

“Isuzu Engines gave the 3.0 diesel a tickle-up,” says Greenhalgh. “It’s the same kilowatts, (130), while torque has gone from 380Nm to 430Nm.” Greenhalgh also announced that emission levels have been reduced.

A six-speed auto is standard.

Specification remains high. “There is only one model,” explained Greenhalgh, “and it’s New Zealand build code, not (a vehicle) built for other markets.”

There’s independent rear air conditioning, rear DVD player with a drop-down screen, GPS, reversing camera, full leather upholstery and power front seats.

Despite the extensive upgrades, MU-X carries over the previous version’s $65,990 price tag.

Macleans’ top guns

By Bridget Kelly A group of Macleans College students have beaten more than 300 teams, largely made up of university students, to win the highly contested Social Entrepreneurship award at the Velocity Innovation Challenge.

Their 1000 word e-commerce business plan to support ethical and local small businesses caught the eye of the judges at the University of Auckland.

This is the first time this competition has been won by Macleans College students.

Many of the competing students were undergraduate and postgraduates in research roles.

“We are one of the only high school teams to have ever won this competition,” said member Jonathan Shaw.

“We were only able to join because two of our members are part of the University’s Young Scholars programme.”

The Macleans college stu-

dents were Jonathan Shaw, 17, Helen Wu, 18, Vincent Wang, 17, and Wayne Zhou, 16. Their business, Mosaic, is an e-commerce business dedicated to supporting small ethical businesses and promoting ethical business practice.

“The underpinning mission of our company is to promote and develop corporate social responsibility and ethical business practices by supporting the growth and success of local, ethical small companies,” says Shaw.

“S

tarting high school is super scary,” Year 13 Howick College student Raynor Perreau told an audience of prospective students and their parents.

She then assured them the school has systems in place to make that transition easier. Year 9 student Hannah Milo agrees, recalling being walked to class by senior students in her first week, “the teachers were so understanding, and the seniors were just as approachable,” she says, adding that with the support in place for Year 9s she quickly felt right at home.

Speaking at the school’s recent open evening, school leader Raynor and fellow leader Amol Kumar offered stories about their time at Howick College.

Amol is proud of the strong student focus of the school, with student leaders and staff working together to create a positive school community.

“For example we made videos of students who show our school 3C values (Courtesy, Commitment and Citizenship), and how these values have helped them become successful.”

He cited student led initiatives such as The Big Stand and Student Council as mak-

All three agree the school curriculum offers many options to students to consider for their future.

Amol says, “I would never have found my passion for engineering if I didn’t get an opportunity to try it in Electronics class first.”

As part of the new Innovation Stream curriculum, Hannah is excited about the projects she has experienced so far.

“The goal of the Innovation Stream is to develop the leaders of tomorrow, by getting us to be hands on with cool projects,” she explains.

Committed and passionate teachers are acknowledged by the students as a big part of success, Raynor says

teachers genuinely have student interests at heart.

“The support and feedback they give pushes us to improve. They care about us and want us to do well.”

Nearing the end of high school, Amol and Raynor are grateful for all the learning they have experienced at Howick College, inside and outside the classroom, and feel well prepared for the real world.

Their advice? Take every opportunity offered while at school; advice Hannah is keen to take.

“Imagine what I can do in the next five years!” she grins.

Edgewater College has started a Pasifika-based youth mentoring programme, in the hopes of connecting their students with indigenous knowledge, belief and values.

The programme is called O le Malaga Paia; The sacred journey, which is inspired by Mana Moana, a post doctorial research project conducted by acclaimed poet, Dr Karlo Mila. The programme is designed to allow life-lessons from “the sea, the land, and the heavens” to inspire and

guide new generations living in contemporary Auckland.

One initiative from this project includes the students having breakfast together in the mornings, which Whanau liaison William Pua hopes will bring Edgewater College closer together.

“My desire is that people will come, be fed, be inspired and inspire,” said Mr Pua. The sacred journey breakfast cafe is open to students and staff, and project coordinator Catherine Croot

says that the cafe continues to grow in popularity, with accolades from the school community. The project will be seen in English drama and photography classes in collaboration with Sarah Jansen.

O le Malaga Paia aims to encourage students to pursue knowledge of their culture, identity, values and beliefs.

Mr Pua believes it will provide academic and cultural support, and will enhance communication between the school and families.

Students bring business to life

By Bridget Kelly Two Ormiston Senior College students believe their new palette art business is some cutting edge stuff.

Harjot Singh Sodhi 18, and Ethan Thompson, 17, created the business for the Young Enterprises Scheme which is part of their business class.

“It’s a chance to have a business before you even leave school, so we were quite excited about that,” said Sodhi.

The palette art business, called Cutting Edge Enterprise, prides itself only being completely custom-

izable and sustainable.

The duo use up-cycled timber and damaged cans of spray paint to create their works of art, which sell for $15-$30.

“We here at Cutting Edge truly believe that we have a solution to New Zealand’s rapidly increasing timber waste,” said Sodhi.

Their customisations include logos, symbols and texts. You can choose to have a spray painted stencil, or an LED lit piece.

Their biggest competition is a group of Pakuranga students, who they heard were making palette

furniture, and Industrial Design NZ who sell palette art, but at a higher price.

Their end goal is to make around $1000 before tax, and Sodhi believes that they will make that before September.

Sodhi and Thompson have made enough already to buy themselves a table saw, which will cut the production time down to an hour.

They are also looking at hiring more students to help them keep up with future demand, and allow them to stay on top of their school work.

dents so far, and we’re thinking of expanding into the corporate market like offices, schools,” said Sodhi.

They have sold seven in the two weeks they’ve been operating, despite Thompson battling tonsillitis.

By Bridget Kelly A group of former Pakuranga high school students Note2A+ business is gaining traction in Auckland, and they have their sights set on going international.

They’ve made $10,000 since they launched in September this year, selling university class notes online.

Kobe Huang, 19, thought up the idea, which was brought to life with help from Emily Chen,19, Edson Han, 19, Yifei Liu, 20, Kevin Hu, 19, Tony An, 19, and Honghao Wu, 19.

The self-described ‘A Team’ are all commerce students at the University of Auckland, except for Yifei who studies engineering.

They competed in the Velocity 100 challenge last year and made the finals.

“We actually didn’t go in with the intention of winning or anything like that, basically Velocity provides a good support network for entrepreneurs who want to start up their business,” said Tony An. “A lot of the teams that went through Velocity were just ideas, we were sort of the only team making real sales and I think that’s what a real business is, it’s going out there and actually doing it.”

They did a test run of their business, and found that it gained traction quickly, and they were making money.

“We never expected it to take off; it sort of took off on its own.”

They got KAMI onboard who invested time and support, and Bruce Waller, the property manager of Highland shopping centre who provided essential insights for the group.

“If it wasn’t for the Young Enterprise Scheme and Highland Park Shopping Centre, we would definitely not exist at all,” said An. They are an online retailer for study notes.

Students with A grades can submit their class notes and then Note2A+ will cross check the notes, and distribute them.

The commerce notes for a semester, for example, are $15. Students who send through their notes make 40 per cent profit.

“Once they finish a paper, all these study resources that they’ve made throughout the course they just throw away, that’s just value going down the drain. That’s where we come in; we’re retaining that value for the next set of students,” said An. Their end goal vision is to replace text books.

They are working on expanding to other universities in New Zealand.

“If you think of it as a pool we’re fishing from, the more we enlarge it, the more potential we have,” said An. Their biggest hurdle is university opposition. In the year it’s been running they’ve faced backlash from top students who feel that sharing notes is on par with cheating, and they feel some lecturers are hesitant about the idea.

“Commercialising of study notes is a really new idea, so it does have some warming up to do,” said An.

Burling conquers Everest I

t was in 1953 when mountaineer Edmund Hillary became the first human to conquer Everest that I, as a boy, first began to feel the immense pride at belonging to a little nation that could beat the world if it set its mind to it.

I was too young to realise then that Kiwi-born Lord Rutherford was the first man to split the atom.

But since then, like so many of my countrymen, I have taken huge pride in the achievement of our sportsmen.

After Sir Ed’s feat there was a 1956 home rugby test series win against the Danie Craven-coached supermen Springboks, clinched by Peter Jones’ Eden Park try, and his immortal “I’m absolutely buggered” after match comment.

Then there was that golden hour at the 1960 Rome Olympics when Arthur Lydiard coached athletes Peter Snell and Murray Halberg to win gold in the 800m and 5000m respectively.

Since then there have been many more such moments to fuel New

Zealanders with pride. Right up there amongst the best of them is Emirates Team New Zealand’s magnificent Bermuda triumph in beating Oracle to lift sailing’s Holy Grail, the America’s Cup. Having come back from the pitch-pole capsize against Ben Ainslie and continuing to sail on damaged daggerboards, it has been an amazing success story for Kiwi innovativeness, design and sailing excellence.

With Russell Coutts and Peter Blake having won it in San Francisco in 1995 before losing it to Alinghi in 2003 when Coutts switched his allegiance, the Auld Mug has been dear to Kiwi hearts which were broken in San Fran four years ago when Jimmy ‘Pitbull’ Spithill’s Oracle crew snatched it from the jaws of defeat against Dean Barker.
