Tapping into job markets ■ BY FARIDA MASTER

or all those who think there aren’t enough jobs out there, think again. Paul Goldsmith, Minister for Tertiary Education Skills and Employment, says there were around 137,000 new jobs last year. “We are in a job boom. “There are lots of opportunities out there,” he told students at Ormiston Senior College as he introduced the Occupation Outlook app and webpage on Friday morning. The app gives an overview of education, employment and income information. “If you look through the app, you will find 50 to 60 things you would have never known of otherwise,” he said. “It will tell you about the cost of studies, skill shortage, salary you can earn, job prospects, professional organisations in a particular field, number of jobs advertised. There is a lot of helpful data.” Mr Goldsmith said that the app will soon provide a breakdown of universities along with a comparative study of the success rate of people getting jobs once they graduated from different universities. Mr Goldsmith shared an anecdote about an old friend whose career

he nation’s independent publishers – including Times Media which produces the Howick and Pakuranga Times and Botany and Ormiston Times – are banding together, creating a new national news service. Newsie is a collaboration of New Zealand-owned and independent news companies, pooling resources throughout the nation to bring a new, balanced and locally owned news organisation. The news service is co-ordinated by Sun Media, the New Zealandowned publishing company that operates the highly-successful SunLive news website based in the Bay of Plenty. Regional newspapers and websites are being added every week to the Newsie stable. Sun Media director Brian Rogers said Newsie is a unique and powerful new concept – a cooperative effort of independent publishers the length and breadth of New Zealand, united in their commitment to pool resources and to create a truly independent and balanced national news service. It is in the early stages of development, he says. “We’ll be adding many more independent publishers to the pool in coming months, along with freelancers throughout the country and offering New Zealanders their own voice. “We have secured reliable and balanced sources of international and national news, and sports feeds, so as Newsie grows and expands there’ll be more to read, opportunity to comment and give
feedback. “This is truly a news-site for New Zealanders, by New Zealanders, who at last have the chance to make it their own.” Rogers says Newsie will have an “incredible depth” of regional and national coverage thanks to its media partners. “They are the eyes and ears of their communities and are committed to feeding a rich variety of important
regional news, colourful stories of New Zealanders and some entertaining tales. “Clickbait is banned; the Kardashians outlawed… Newsie will have real news about Kiwis and we’ll never ask readers if they can believe what happens next. “Tramps will not buy Ferraris and celebrities will have to earn a mention, not merely get a haircut or change spouse.”
Heavy haulage trucks ‘got to go’ ■■By Laura Brookes Residents of Armoy Drive are calling for the prompt removal of heavy haulage trucks parked along their street. For the past six weeks, the parked trucks have been a major safety hazard to drivers, said Terry Nash who petitioned the case to the Howick Local Board at the February 20 public meeting. “Any vehicle coming toward Smales Road has to be over the centre line of the road,” he said, when explaining the issue to board members. “We, as residents, are being adversely affected by this activity in a residential zone... they’re a danger to people going along our roads.” A neighbour of Mr Nash’s also attended the meeting and confirmed there is always at least one truck positioned there day and

All Blacks Sevens star gives back to school ■■By Kelly Teed He might be playing for the big guns now, but Tone Ng Shiu hasn’t forgotten where he came from. The 22-year-old All Black Sevens star was welcomed back onto the Botany Downs Secondary College campus before catching a flight to Vancouver with the rest of the squad to play the fourth leg of the 2016/17 HSBC World Series. He was surprised at the front gates with a rousing haka by current students and a small group of old boys before being presented with

Ng Shiu described the moment as “very emotional”. “I’m pretty shocked to be honest... I love to see my school’s got my back and I’m just proud to be Botany.” Ng Shiu had also gifted his Sevens playing jersey back to the school in a decision sparked by the desire to give back. “I needed to offer something back to the school because they’ve done a lot for me in the past.”

Botany resident Mark Hanson has appealed to the Howick Local Board to help fix footpaths and the unsatisfactory repair of them in the Botany area. Mr Hanson made a plea to the Howick Local Board at a public meeting on February 20 to address the issue on behalf of residents, who are left to deal with “tacky” and “unsightful” footpaths. “In my opinion, it’s not the care and attention the footpaths should be getting,” he said. He cited various examples within the Botany area, such as the repairs outside 90 Baverstock Road, the inconsistent bitumen job outside council-owned property Gracechurch Reserve, and the site on the corner of Chapel and Kilkenny roads where a “temporary solution” still remains, seven years down the track. The worst, he said, is outside his own house, where he measured and photographed an eight centimetre drop in the concrete. It was fixed around two to three years ago, but has since eroded to that extent, and Mr Hanson said it’s lucky nobody has been injured as a result. “It’s shameful. I had friends over from America, and I’m embarrassed when they comment on the state of our footpaths.” It’s a two-fold problem, he said,

and one that he hopes the board will take action on. Firstly, repairing footpaths with bitumen instead of concrete can appear “cheap and tacky and unsightful” said Mr Hanson, as it creates a look of inconsistency. Howick Local Board chairman David Collings suggested bitumen may be more flexible and therefore a more viable option for repairing footpaths. Mr Hanson also raised the issue of the emergence of roots from trees planted along the footpath

Man questioned after handbag snatch A man has been arrested following a brazen handbag snatch on Michael Jones Drive at Botany Junction on Wednesday afternoon. Senior sergeant Mike Schmidt confirmed to the Times that a woman was left badly shaken after her handbag was stolen at around 2pm. Times photographer Wayne Martin, who was in the area soon after, claims
the robbery is the second of its kind in three weeks. Police were unable to verify this. “Thanks to caring witnesses and social media, a description of the perpetrator and his vehicle were provided to Police who now have a suspect in custody for today’s (Wednesday’s) incident,” Martin said. Snr sgt Schmidt said
and the way some can cause disruption to the pavement. “You go for a walk and sometimes you’ll see a big tree and it’s just fine and hasn’t been recently laid. With some other ones the tree is relatively young but the pavement is disrupted,” he said. “We could get our tree experts along and determine trees that are not disruptive, or have something that will drive the roots far enough down to alleviate that problem in the first place... we can’t change what’s happened now but for a new subdivision, this would be a good initiative.” Auckland Transport media relations manager Mark Hannan said there are a number of vehicle crossings with a gravel surface on Gracechurch Road which Auckland Transport has made safe for pedestrians. “We carry out regular inspections of the footpath network. Any damaged footpaths which are considered to be unsafe are made safe with a temporary repair. Permanent repairs are done when we carry out repairs in the adjacent area. “Vehicle crossings are the responsibility of the property owner under the Auckland Council Bylaw. We will be asking the property owners to upgrade the crossings to the required standard.”
police turned up at an address but were unable to find the handbag. However they did arrest a male “on an unrelated matter”. “We’re following positive leads and our guys will be ... following up with her.” Police would be deploying more staff “at peak times”, he said. “Again, if you see anyone suspicious (at any time), ring the police on 111.”
Z Petrol Station on Te Irirangi Drive, Botany Downs was the target of a “smash and grab”style burglary in the early hours of Saturday morning. A police spokesperson said three or four men arrived in two stolen vehicles at 3:55am and smashed the glass front door. The sole employee locked himself in another room and was not injured. Cigarettes and cash were the only items stolen. Police have recovered both stolen vehicles and are reviewing CCTV footage. Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Richard Bull on 261-1300.

Kay leaves after 43 years at beloved Pakuranga College ■■By Farida Master
S
he entered the portals of Pakuranga College as a newly married, 21-year-old. After spending more than four decades at the college, Kay Davies retired recently at the age of 65, marking an end of an era. Mrs Davies aka Mrs Thorn has been a “much loved aunty/ grandmother ” to many international students as well as dean of Rimu House to different generations of students. Always dressed impeccably, she stands tall, cutting a striking figure which had some refer to her as the elegant ‘Lady Kay’. Considering her years of dedicated service to the school, it is not surprising that she has been a teacher to some of the current teachers at Pakuranga College. There is a joke doing the rounds that when Social Science teacher Mike Williamson told Mrs Davies that he started school in 1973, the same year that she did, she looked a little puzzled and said “Oh, but I don’t remember you as a teacher.” Only to have Mr Williamson smile saying, “That’s because I was a Year 9 student then!” Having worked with six principals over the last 43 years, Mrs Davies has undoubtedly impacted
thousands of lives. It’s not unusual for students to walk up to her in far corners of the world, be it the US, UK, South East Asia or Australia and introduce themselves. “It’s wonderful when ex-students remember something you said so many years ago that impacted their lives, because as a teacher you are just doing your job,” she says, a day before her retirement. Mrs Davies admits that in all the years she spent at Pakuranga College she never felt a hint of boredom. As a young girl from Hastings she started her career teaching Physical Education. It wasn’t long before that the principal at the time asked her if she would be a sports co-ordinator as well as assistant dean for 7th form. “After six and a half years in that role, I felt I was running a bit empty,” she recollects about a challenge she thoroughly enjoyed. “In 1994 there was a massive change in thinking. I was asked to be on the committee to restructure pastoral care. It was the first time that we looked at a vertical house system which worked very well,” she says of change in the education system. During her long tenure at Pakuranga College, Mrs Davies was

a relieving deputy principal thrice. However in 2004, she took a break from school due to family reasons. “During my year off, principal Bali Haque requested me to bring out the school magazine which I gladly did. I also did a small tutoring group with the students before I returned
as dean of Rimu House in 2006,” she says. In 2011 when the current principal Michael Williams realised there was a big surge in international students seeking admission, he asked her to be dean of International Students, a role she cherished. “There has been a huge change in the ethnicity mix and I love the multicultural feel of the college. I admire the international students for leaving their country and coming to a different culture,” she says. Much as she will miss school where she has spent two-thirds of her life, she now looks forward to Sunday nights. “I could never relax on a Sunday night, wondering if I was prepared enough with the lesson for Monday at school or if I had finished marking papers,” she smiles. Despite her strict instructions that she wanted a very low key farewell, the staff organised a high tea befitting Mrs Davies. It took her by complete surprise on her last day at school. Principal Williams says, “She is an institution in herself and will be leaving a big hole in the school. She’s a real treasure-trove of information and will be dearly missed.”

Scholarship ‘a chance to change my life’ ■ BY KELLY TEED
R
eceiving a health scholarship was the final kick one Cockle Bay resident needed to turn his life around. A streak of bad health issues had left Tony Frith hospitalised on multiple occasions and weighed down both physically and mentally. A motorcycle accident, a misdiagnosed broken ankle and a torn calf muscle as well as a series of lung infections left the primary school teacher struggling to get back to his active lifestyle. Regular lung infections resulted in frequent hospitalisation and courses of antibiotics to no avail. The culprit turned out to be mould in Mr Frith’s air conditioning unit but by then the lack of activity had taken its toll. “I got quite overweight and lacking energy...just really not in a good health state.” When his mother heard about a scholarship from Total Sport, Mr Frith knew it was exactly what he needed. “When I found out I’d got the scholarship I thought this is a chance to change my life, a chance to get back on track and start meeting some of those goals that I’ve got.” He was selected as one of 15 participants on a $1500 scholarship programme designed to help him get fit for the Partners Life DUAL Scholarship Programme. The scholarship includes a weekly boot camp, personal trainer, nutrition advice, online support, exercise gear and the entry fee to the Partners Life DUAL event on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands this month.

Director Aaron Carter from Total Sport says that the scholarship was designed to help people who really wanted make a total lifestyle change, and get fit and healthy – both mentally and physically. “Total Sport has a simple mission: to get more people outside and enjoying participating in more events and experiences in the wonderful locations New Zealand has to offer,” he says. Mr Frith certainly falls into that category and takes inspiration from his active family and their outdoor pursuits. “My mum walks marathons and I’ve got a little brother who’s doing Coast to Coast this weekend – I’d love to have a go at the two day course on that,” he said. He has so far dropped around six kilograms which is predominantly from healthy eating and getting more sleep. He says he’s noticed a range of positive changes so far, both mentally and physically
and is working towards a goal of possibly completing the Tarawera Trail marathon towards the end of the year. A change of mindset has also been a driving force when it comes to motivation for Mr Frith who lives in Cockle Bay but teaches year 3 at Southern Cross campus in Mangere – now not even Auckland traffic can stress him out. “It’s not really stressful unless you make it that way, there’s no point getting angry at anyone else because what value is it, where’s the positivity in that? “I’m a lot more positive than what I was and I hope that comes through to my family and friends and my kids at school,” he said. “I want to be a difference maker, I want to help these kids [and] show them they have a choice, they have a chance and they can do it. That’s exactly what this scholarship is - it’s doing it, not making excuses.” ➤ For more information, or to register for the event, go to www.thedual.co.nz

A warm welcome home New Zealand has proudly been a significant attraction for tourists from all over the globe. Total international visitor spending reached $10.1 billion in the year to December 2016, with visitor spending up 4 per cent over the same period the year before. In 2016 we welcomed 3.5 million visitors to our shores with holiday-makers’ spending totalling $6.4 billion, up 10 per cent year on year. This is positive news for a nation that prides itself on being an international tourist haven. But it’s not just tourists that are voting with their feet. So are Kiwis. In previous years, the numbers of New Zealanders leaving to live overseas was high. Australia has been a particular destination of choice for many of our friends and love ones. As the PM recently reminded Parliament, four years ago 40,000 Kiwis left New Zealand to live in Australia. Now, this has all changed. The net migration from Australia
to New Zealand is now at zero. Kiwis are returning home and choosing to back their home country again. Not only does this demonstrate people’s confidence in New Zealand and recognition of the way our country has moved forward, this return will also have a positive contribution to our growth. In the next five years, annual economic growth is expected to average approximately 3 per cent. This means that more jobs can be supported, unemployment will keep tracking downwards, and incomes will continue to rise faster than the rate of inflation. In fact, at the end of last year, unemployment had fallen to 4.9 per cent and is projected to fall to a further 4.3 per cent by 2020/21; more people are now in employment – a record of 2.5 million; 144,000 jobs were created last year and a further 140,000 are expected to be created by 2020/21. To help New Zealand stay on track with these goals, it is

important for this country to have New Zealanders returning and contributing. Immigration has always been an important contributor to New Zealand’s economic growth, but we always need to back our own first and foremost. These figures also point to migration, in particular return migration, to be another crucial component to New Zealand’s growth and development.

Freedom camping trials commence
volunteering
Help Kiwi kids with cancer Child Cancer Foundation is calling for volunteers nationwide to lend a hand for its annual street collection, taking place on Friday and Saturday March 17 and 18, during Child Cancer Foundation Appeal Month. Dedicated volunteers are urgently needed to donate their time and help raise vital funds to support more than 500 families’ nationwide in hospital, at home and in the community. Robyn Kiddle, chief executive at Child Cancer Foundation said more than three children in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer every week. “Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct funding from the government, and we rely heavily on the generosity of New Zealanders to continue to support these children and their families in need,” she said. “We are grateful to anyone who can spare a couple of hours to raise funds to help brave Kiwi kids and their families, facing their cancer battle. “There are collection sites nationwide – including sites in Howick and Botany- and just a couple of hours out of people’s days will make a huge difference.” Schools or businesses can also “adopt” a collection site in their local area for one or both days and involve staff, students and parents in this event. People interested in volunteering as collectors can register at www.childcancer.org.nz or call 0800 424 453 to be connected with their local organiser.
tourism dollar to other local board economies, while also introducing visitors to some of the lesserknown but lovely corners of our city,” she says. The council proposes using a range of regulatory and nonregulatory approaches to try to move campers around Auckland. “We’ll be making good quality travel planning information more readily available to campers, using social media and printed information about alternative paid and free camping sites,” says Michael Sinclair, manager - Social Policy and Bylaws for Auckland Council. Information about day trips, events and things to do in participating local areas will encourage campers to explore
and enjoy their surroundings. “We want to do everything we can to encourage voluntary moving on, including ensuring our suggested alternatives feel safe for visitors, so we have been careful with location choices and will have security monitoring at sites,” says Mr Sinclair. There will also be increased monitoring of toilets and rubbish bins. “During the pilot we will be vigilant with compliance monitoring. We will retain the ability to deploy a quick response team to any areas not coping with demand, and we will modify the conditions of camping (for example, by reducing the length of stay) or even shut down designated sites if they are causing a nuisance,” he says.

A
bumper tourism season is increasing tensions between freedom campers and locals in Auckland, prompting new moves by Auckland Council to see if the conflicting needs of freedom campers and local residents can peacefully co-exist. This week, council is beginning a two-month pilot “dispersal” programme that could see freedom camping visitors encouraged to spread out over 29 locations across the city, rather than crowd into a few well-known hot spots. The pilot sites – including four in Howick, Pakuranga and Eastern Beach – have been selected following extensive consultation with local boards, resulting in seven of the 21 Auckland local boards participating. At the outer edges of Auckland, the Franklin and Rodney local boards have approved seven and eight sites respectively. The Howick Local Board has approved sites in Eastern Beach, Lloyd Elsmore Park and two Howick public carparks. In Maungakiekie-Tamaki, sites have been approved at Panmure Lagoon’s Domain Reserve and the Panmure Wharf Reserve. Puketapapa Local Board is offering Margaret Griffen Park for the pilot and Albert-Eden Local Board has a site at Western Springs Community House. Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has approved five sites and the Upper Harbour Local Board has approved the use of Rosedale Reserve in Albany for the pilot scheme. “A key aim of the pilot programme is to try and reduce the impact of freedom campers on local access to parks, beaches and amenities,” says councillor Linda Cooper, chair of the council’s Regulatory Committee. Throughout the trial, council officers will be ensuring the sites are kept well-maintained and tidy, with clear accessways for the public to traverse and park. “We want to be welcoming hosts to our visitors. Campers bring an estimated $1.2 million a month into our economy over summer. However the influx of freedom campers into hotspot areas particularly in north eastern coastal and inner city locations - is creating problems. Overcrowding, parking and access difficulties, and increasing rubbish at popular destinations is frustrating local communities and other park users.” Auckland is the gateway for most of the 3.4 million tourists that come to New Zealand and Auckland Council estimates 320 freedom camping vehicles per day are either travelling on its roads or parked in public places over summer. “If we can encourage campers into new areas, we hope to reduce overcrowding and spread the

Friendship exchange T
hey arrived in large numbers and made quite an impact. Led by District Governor Margaret Walton, a cheerful and dynamic group of 21 Rotarians from Rotary District 7010 in Canada recently landed in Howick, Pakuranga and Botany on an international Friendship Exchange programme. Organised with clockwork precision by assistant
governor Sue Fairburn of Rotary District 9920 and Leone Dunne from Somerville Rotary, the vibrant group of Canadians got to spend time with all the local Rotary Clubs that hosted them and showed them around. From vineyards to beaches, bush walks, sailing, art and sculpture exhibitions, visit to an alpaca farm and dining at
the finest restaurants, the Canadians had a taste of New Zealand. But more than that, it was a sense of fellowship that comes with spending time with like-minded people who put service before self. The exchange was a perfect springboard to share different initiatives on fundraising that help a wide range of charitable organisations as well as
deserving individuals all over the world. While some of the gogetting Rotarians from Canada have returned to their country, others are currently touring the length and breadth of New Zealand. Next year local Rotarians from District 9920 will be visiting Toronto on a reciprocal exchange programme.

Ormiston Weight Loss Service Welcome to the Ormiston Weight Loss Service. Our service is intended to offer our community a surgical choice and clinical support, to assist in taking ownership of your health and moving forward to a greater place of wellness. Bariatric Surgery assists in weight loss and may be recommended as a last resort when diet, exercise and medication have not been successful and if obesity related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood
pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes have worsened, among other problems. The aim of the surgery is to reduce the foodholding capacity of the stomach so the patient has a feeling of fullness after eating very little. Without hunger pangs, the person tends to lose interest in overeating and is more likely to stick to a low-kilojoule diet. When you choose Ormiston Hospital Weight Loss Service for your surgery, you choose the most experienced surgeons, treating you in the well-established Ormiston Hospital. We are dedicated to offering you a complete and comprehensive service with a fixed fee that will provide you with the best level of care through your journey to improved health.

Glory days recalled in aviation novel ■■By Laura Brookes Pakuranga resident and former Air New Zealand pilot Guy Clapshaw has reached an impressive 3000 sales of his latest book, Tasman Echo Alpha: When flying was dangerous and sex was safe. Released in late November, the book focuses on Mr Clapshaw’s embellished recollections of 30 years’ flying experience with Air New Zealand during a time when enormous industry expansion was taking place. In 1965, Mr Clapshaw started working as a pilot with Air New Zealand, formerly known as Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL). With the purchase of three DC-8 jet airliners, TEAL became Air New Zealand. Filled with the tales of a philandering captain who didn’t tell his wife he’d retired, a band of very professional aircrew and an aircrew scheduler, Mr Clapshaw’s latest book provides an entertaining behind-thescenes insight into his time with Air New Zealand. Mr Clapshaw first realised he was a fiction writer during the Second World War, when his classmates bragged about their parents’ war efforts, and he decided he would join in the fun. One of his classmates’ had a mother who was a NAAFI tea lady, and another had a father who was a squadron storeman, but Mr Clapshaw’s father was simply an Air Raid warden, so he began making up stories about his father being shot down in the Battle of Britain, imprisoned in Colditz Castle, and organising the Great Escape to lead an 1000-bomber raid on Berlin, and bomb Tokyo on the way home to win the war. Soon, his classmates’ parents

couldn’t wait to meet his famous father. In a hilarious turn of events, Mr Clapshaw told friends at his birthday party his father had shell shock, instructing them not to talk to him about the war at all. Tasman Echo Alpha is the third book Mr Clapshaw has written, and local bookstore proprietor Barbara Rosie of Readaway Books said it’s his best yet. The keen writer hopes to release his fourth book next November, focusing on commercial flying in the 1970s and 80s.
he innovation just keeps booming at New Zealand’s first and only man-made white water park. In less than 10 months, the people who had the vision to develop Vector Wero Whitewater Park have pulled together a contemporary container village that is home to seven not-forprofit organisations. The Momentum Hub was recently officially opened by Prime Minister Bill English, with hundreds of VIPs sharing the occasion. The PM commended the seven charitable trusts that will work collaboratively in the new village for their work to keep children and young people engaged. “When a young person is on welfare by the age of 20, the Government knows there is an enormous long-term cost,” says Mr English. “The Government can only do so much and no government department can create the fresh approach and relationships that work in these communities and with individual young people. “It’s important every young person feels like their community values what they can contribute to their community.” Second Nature Charitable Trust CEO Richard Jeffery says like-minded trusts were brought together to foster collaboration within not-for-profit youth development education. “We wanted an organisational and operational structure that provided more bang for buck,” he says. “The trusts at The Momentum Hub are delivering for our youth but they just need a bit more fuel

Employment agreements I
f you are in the workforce or just starting out, one of the most important documents you must have is a signed employment agreement between your employer and you, which is legally binding. This contract covers hours of work, rates of pay, holiday entitlements etc, and must include certain mandatory clauses, such as four weeks annual leave. Even if they are not included they are still legally binding. If you do not have an agreement, it would be wise to ensure that you arrange one with your employer. If they are reluctant to do so it should be noted that there are significant fines, up to $10,000 for an individual employer, and up to $20,000 if a corporation is involved, and they refuse to provide a written and mutually
PR0450
signed agreement. There are of course a number of variations to a standard contract, for example a collective agreement in your workplace when you start work and you already belong to the relevant union, then you’ll be covered by this agreement automatically. You can as an individual negotiate additional terms as long as they are consistent with the collective agreement. Other agreements covering fixed term employment, and casual employees may have variations but overall an employee is still covered by the mandatory clauses of a standard contract even if not specifically mentioned. This is an extensive topic to cover in a couple of paragraphs. If you do have any concerns over your existing contract, or
do not even have one, please visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau and sit down with one of our experienced interviewers to discuss the problem. We have extensive information to assist one deciding what steps to take and who to approach to resolve any issues. If you have concerns, problems with other matters, please do not hesitate to contact or visit your local CAB. We have the resources and experienced volunteers to help you. ➤➤Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, Rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, Phone 271-5382; Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Pakuranga, phone 576-8331 or email pakuranga@ cab.org.nz or visit www.cab. org.nz for free, confidential and informative help.

But for the very first time, Howick Lions Club went solo to run the Howick Lions Summer Festival on Sunday at Lloyd Elsmore Park. With support from the Howick Local Board, they managed to pull off a fun show. The festival had a great line-up of entertainment that included a performance by Roger Skinner and the Motivation band; followed by a show of flexibility by gymnasts from the Flow Gym and dancers from the Doyle Academy of Irish dance. High energy performances by award-winning students of Triple A Aerobics, run by Amanda Bush, eight times New Zealand Champion and World ranked international athlete, had the audience cheering. There was plenty of fancy foot-work as dancers from Carter Chan Dance studio made some groovy moves on stage. Adding to the fun and festivity was Howick Local Board member and town crier Jim Donald in traditional tartan, inviting people from the audience to join in the Scottish Country Dancing. Rotary
■■By Farida Master They may be small in number but definitely big at heart. The Cultural and Charity Night hosted by the Rotary Club of Auckland South at the Imperial Place on Saturday evening proved that the only South Asian Rotary Club in New Zealand certainly knows how to give generously for a good cause. A sit-down dinner attended by district governor Roger Harvey along with his wife Georgie and other past district governors, Ron Seeto and Jennie Herring, set the stage for the auction held to fundraise for Dove Hospice.
“Unlike other hospices we support people from diagnoses of a life threatening illness and help them throughout their wellness journey,” said Julie McCarthy, executive director of Dove Hospice. “A third of the people fully recover, a third have a relapse and a third continue to the end of life care,” she said about the 24-hour care unit that uses alternate therapies and counselling to help patients deal with the shock of knowing they are terminally ill. Limited editions of paintings, crystal, Wedgewood at the auction had Rotarians as well as
their guests bidding generously. Impressed by the response, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, a special guest at the event did some quick thinking. He said his contribution to the evening was a wine bottle signed by Prime Minister Bill English—up for bidding. It had Teri Yu-Hsia Cheng chairperson of Global Federation of Chinese Business Women of NZ shell out $1000 for it. Eric Yi, president of the Rotary Club of Auckland South looked really pleased that all the hard work that had gone into organising the grand event had finally paid off.

Quarterly growth falls 0.7 per cent T
he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows that nationwide residential property values for February increased 13.5 per cent over the past year. Values rose by 1.1 per cent over the past three months and the average value nationwide is $631,349. The nationwide average value is now 52.4 per cent above the previous market peak of late 2007. When adjusted for inflation the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 12.0 per cent and values are now 28.5 per cent above the 2007 peak. Residential property values across the Auckland Region increased 12.8 per cent year on year and quarterly growth has decreased by 0.7 per cent over the past three months. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,043,680 and values are now on average 91.0 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007. When adjusted for inflation values rose 11.3 per cent over the past year and are 61.0 per cent above the 2007 peak. QV National spokesperson Andrea Rush said, “The latest QV House Price Index figures show values have dropped over the past quarter in parts of Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch and rate of value growth in Tauranga has also slowed as the latest round of LVR restrictions continue to take
effect. Meanwhile, values in the Wellington region continue to accelerate with values up more than 21.0 per cent over the past year and 4.3 per cent over the past quarter.” “The Dunedin market also remains buoyant, with strong levels of activity and demand and continued steady value growth. While parts of Auckland have seen values drop values continue to rise in central Auckland, Waiheke Island and in Rodney and Franklin. “The same trend of negative growth was seen in parts of the Auckland market this time last year following the introduction of the 30.0 per cent LVR rules for investors introduced in October 2015, then value began increasing again by April 2016.” “So it’s possible the latest quarterly decrease seen in parts of the Auckland will be relatively
short-lived as the market drivers of relatively low interest rates, strong net migration and a high number of sales to investors remain.” AucklandHome values have risen over the past three months in some parts of the Auckland region but have decreased in others as the latest round of LVR restrictions take effect. The former Auckland City Council central suburbs rose 12.5 per cent over the past year and 0.2 per cent over the past three months with the average value now $1,224,673. Waitakere City values were up by 13.8 per cent year on year but decreased 1.7 per cent since December, with the average value dropping from $845,864 to $831,705. Values in the former Manukau city area rose 14.2 per cent year on year but decreased slightly
by 0.4 per cent since December, with the average value down from $906,004 to $902,477. Values in the former North Shore City suburbs also rose 11.2 per cent year on year but decreased 2.2 per cent over the past three months from an average value of $1,224,477 in December to $1,196,987. Rodney is still increasing with values there up 13.6 per cent year on year and 1.4 per cent over the past three months and the average value is $936,877. Franklin is also up 13.3 per cent year on year and 2.4 per cent since December and it has an average value of $663,638. Papakura values also increased 13.6 per cent year on year and 0.9 per cent over the past three months and the average there is now $686,465.
QV Auckland homevalue manager James Steele said: “There continues to be uncertainty around where home values are going and there has also been a surge in listings coming onto the market during February which is giving buyers more choice.” “Properties at the lower end of the market in suburbs popular with investors tend to be not selling for the same premiums they were before the new LVRs came in. However, there are some record sales prices still being achieved and there remains strong competition for homes in areas popular with both first home buyers, movers and investors not affected by the new loan to value ratio rules.”
Reassess insurance policy Homeowners should use a Registered Quantity Surveyor to help them make sure their property is fully insured, the NZ Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS) says. NZIQS president Jeremy Shearer says now, following the Kaikoura earthquake, is a good time for all residential and commercial building owners to take stock of their policies. “Engage a Registered Quantity Surveyor to determine your insurance values. They are building cost experts, and will be able to tell property owners exactly how much insurance they need. “That way homeowners and building owners can have confidence they won’t be caught short if disaster strikes.
His advice comes off the back of the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman’s, Karen Stevens, warning about learning from the underinsured. Currently, most homeowners and insurers agree on the amount the insurer will pay, called a ‘sum insured’, or they accept a default figure. This method is a change from the previous practice of insurers paying whatever it costs to rebuild the house. The change was prompted by the Christchurch earthquakes, after which many insurers discovered their liability was much higher than had been expected. Mr Shearer says very few people seek insurance replacement advice because the default option is provided by the insurers.

Ioane centre of attention R
ieko Ioane’s brilliant try-scoring hat-trick in the Blues 56-18 Super Rugby romp against the Rebels in Melbourne has given substance to Steve Hansen’s belief his best position will be centre rather than wing. Whether Blues coach Tana Umaga keeps him there in the face of competition from George Moala and Rene Ranger remains to be seen with all three capable of playing both positions. At 19, Ioane is an amazing prospect who possesses power and pace and a fierce hunger for tries. But what probably most impressed Umaga and All Black coach Hansen was a crunching tackle he made in the season’s opener. The possibility of a dynamic midfield partnership between playmaker Sonny Bill Williams and finisher Ioane offers exciting possibilities for Blues fans sick of seeing their team under perform for far too long. That is dependent on how well veteran Williams, 31, recovers from the nasty Achilles
injury which cut short his 2016 Rio Olympic sevens bid. But should he do so and leave Piers Francis to contest the first-five berth with Ihaia West, he could provide the backline cohesion the Blues have so desperately needed. In former All Black captain Umaga, a man who played wing and both midfield positions, they have the ideal mentor. New chums to impress in their Blues debut were former Chiefs halfback Augustine Pulu, Chiefs prop Pauliasi Manu, Otago fullback Michael Collins and former Counties and Crusader loose forward and lock Jimmy Tupou, who captained the side. The powerful Pulu scored a stunning long range try from a lineout and also has leadership qualities that should serve the backline well. Joining him and Rieko Ioane as the stars to shine against the Rebels was Steven Luatua, who has disappointed Hansen with his decision to join Bristol coach Pat Lam at the end of the

season. But who could blame him after Liam Squire and Elliot Dixon were preferred as backups for All Black captain Kieran Read and Jerome Kaino last year? I’m not criticising the national selectors choice, but I do believe that against such strong competition the talented Luatua stands to gain far more financially by moving to England. It was also disappointing Hansen should label Lam an ex-Kiwi after no one called him or Graham Henry one when they coached Wales before getting the same job with the All Blacks. Nor should anyone label possible future All Black coach Dave Rennie one when he
departs from the Chiefs to mentor Glasgow at the end of the season. With so much depth in so many positions, Hansen can expect many more potential internationals will chase he big money abroad. That so many have stayed illustrates the pulling power of the silver fern. Meanwhile expect the Chiefs to provide a much sterner test of the Blues mettle when they host them on Friday night. Having broken their six-game jinx against the Highlanders in Dunedin despite having to defend for most of the game, the Chiefs will hope to sharpen their attack. It should be an intriguing contest, especially in the backs where Rieko Ioane and Pulu are likely to come face to face with Anton LienartBrown and Tawera Kerr-Barlow respectively. It will also be a big test for the Blues scrum after the Chiefs pack applied awesome power to shunt back the Highlanders. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Taekwon-Do elite meet New Zealand’s largest martial arts organisation ITKD NZ (International Taekwon-Do New Zealand) got in some extra training over the weekend. New Zealand’s largest ITF (organisation met at the weekend for a bi-annual training seminar for instructors and black belts. The International Instructors Course (IIC) saw around 170 black belts from Kaeo to Dunedin, including black belts from Australia as well as Malaysia come together at the Auckland Netball Centre in St Johns. Conducted by members of the ITF Technical Committee, the seminar gives the instructors, assistant instructors and black belts the latest
technical updates and technical skills. One of only four 8th Dan black belts in ITF Taekwon-Do in New Zealand, Master Mahesh Bhana (Pakuranga) says the seminar is a real highlight for all involved and carries a large amount of knowledge for all participants. ‘It’s a premier event on the TKD calendar next to the world cup and world champs. “The seminar is an important platform to gain valuable knowledge from two ITF Taekwon-Do legends Grandmasters Hector Marano and Ung Kim Lan who continue the legacy of General Choi Hong Hi (General Choi Hong Hi was the originator of Taekwon-Do). ➤ Turn to page 27

t was the phone call every cricket-mad Kiwi child dreams of getting one day. Martin Guptill had suffered a hamstring injury at training and had been ruled out of the upcoming Eden Park match against South Africa. The call turned a dream into reality for 20-year-old Glenn Phillips of the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club. “I wasn’t expecting it at all... your heart starts beating and you know what’s coming when he starts talking,” he said. “When he said ‘yeah, we’d like you to play in this upcoming T20’ it’s sort of unreal because you dream about it and you don’t really know how to react except be ecstatic about it.” The South African-born player described his debut against the Proteas as a big coincidence but says there were no mixed feelings out on the pitch.

“I’ve been in New Zealand so long, I have to consider myself a New Zealand citizen, but it’s kind
of cool to play against the country of your birth.” While walking out onto Eden Park would be an intimidating experience for many, Phillips didn’t let the pressure get to him. “In the end it’s just more people, whether you’re being seen by 2000 or 30,000 ,” he said. “Being able to calm my thoughts and think clearly with all the noise is the challenging part but I wouldn’t say it was any more nerve-racking than walking out to my debut for my domestic T20.” He says the standard at international level cricket is something you can’t know what to expect until you’re playing at that level, but says his experience has given him an idea of what to work on to get to where he wants to be. “In a couple of years, I’d definitely like to be consistent enough to make my ODI debut but if I get another T20 chance I’m definitely going to take it up,” he said.
