here is simmering discontent amongst drivers with the reshuffling of bus operators and bus routes in Auckland. The move is likely to see a reduction in hours for some local bus drivers. No jobs are likely to be lost. Auckland Transport is being blamed for a public tendering process where the focus has been on cents and dollars instead of service. A reader called the Times to inform that Howick & Eastern Buses (H & E) has lost the contract with AT to ferry people from East Auckland into the city. Once the present contract ends, some of their buses will not be allowed past Panmure so passengers will have to transfer to other buses or the trains, he said. Rudd Hughes, from First Union that represents bus drivers, blames the Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM) for a tendering process of bus routes where it is the bus drivers who have

to take the ultimate hit in terms of reduced wages. He says H & E Buses have lost the contract to some of the routes to Go Bus Transport, a major operator in Hamilton and now one of the biggest players in the business. “There is a lot of frustration amongst bus drivers who feel they have been exploited,” says Mr Hughes. “This affects quality of service as bus drivers who are entrusted with transporting people to work and back are working extra hours and fatigued which could be dangerous for passengers.” James Ireland, acting media manager for Auckland Transport, clarifies saying: “By the end of 2018 all Auckland bus routes will be operated under contracts with Auckland Transport, approximately half of which have been subject to a tendering process and the remainder directly negotiated with the existing bus company. “Six local bus routes in the Botany, Howick, Bucklands Beach, Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga, Panmure area will be operated by Go Bus Transport Ltd following the East Auckland tender round.
“In the case of East Auckland, the main trunk services along Ti Rakau Drive and Pakuranga Rd were not put out to tender, but will continue to be operated by Howick & Eastern following a contract negotiation process,” he informs. Mr Ireland says that the H & E Buses will also continue to operate all bus services in the Botany, East Tamaki, Manukau corridor as a result of successfully bidding for two tenders, one of which has been operating since October 2016 (routes 352 and 353 through East Tamaki). “H & E will continue to operate the all-day service from Botany to the City via Ti Rakau Drive, Panmure, Ellerslie and Newmarket, which will operate at least every 15 minutes from early morning until late evening, seven days a week. “They will also continue to operate the Pakuranga Rd service (Botany, Cockle Bay, Howick, and Panmure). This route will continue to the City via the Motorway in peak periods, but off-peak will terminate at Panmure Interchange where customers will be able to transfer to either the Eastern Line train

or the Botany to the City double-decker bus route. “Although off-peak services (the middle of the day including weekends) along Pakuranga Rd will no longer run all the way to the City, they will operate twice as frequently as the current services – at least every 15 minutes instead of generally every 30 minutes. Full details of the East Auckland New Network will be communicated to bus customers and households before the golive date, starting with updated information on the Auckland Transport website.
These routes were tendered and in any tender process there is the likelihood of change.
Consultation
Does the transfer of routes to Go Bus translate into less work for H & E drivers and less wages? Less work - well we have lost work, but drivers work under a 40 hour a week contract and that will not change.
Q & A with Sheryll Otway, CEO Howick and Eastern Buses
Are you required to have buses painted in the AT colours and is the cost to be borne by the H & E Buses? Yes all buses must be painted to run within the new PTOM environment and vehicle specs are specific to the contract.
The East Auckland New Network, which will change all bus routes east of the Tamaki River, was announced by Auckland Transport in June 2016 following public consultation in late 2015.
Does renegotiation of the contract with AT mean that H& E Buses have lost some of the routes to Go Bus?
Is it true that six bus routes that originally belonged to the iconic H & E buses in the area will soon be operated by Go Bus? We have certainly lost some iconic routes which are very disappointing. Will this affect the H & E bus service to the city? The tendering process does not affect the service delivery of any other routes.

General Elections 2017 – Election Day: Saturday, September 23
Thieves steal ice cream
POLITICS
MP hopefuls put to the test With the General Election just over two weeks away, the Times joined a big crowd at a local church to hear from five candidates standing in the very blue Pakuranga Electorate What do you call a line of politicians struggling with the Maori part of our anthem? Nervous. I won’t name names. It’s not gracious. Some struggled. I struggled. We’re all human. Especially before God. I don’t know the belief systems of any of the candidates. That’s fine. But the pressure was on from kick-off. There was an opening prayer. Then the anthem. Then delivery of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ 2017 Election Statement, the opening of which read thusly: “We hope for positive, pro-life attitudes and policies. Love and care for the unborn, the vulnerable, the disabled, the elderly and the different, are marks of a compassionate society, as are well- funded palliative care services. Legalisation of assisted suicide undermines trust in the medical profession and puts vulnerable groups in our society at risk.” Everyone seemed in agreement that this all made perfect sense. And just when the candidates thought they may not have to get up and face the music after all, a speaker came forth and gave unto them this curly question: “Where do you stand on legalising Euthanasia and Decriminalising Abortion?”

Your time starts now. Rev Chris Sullivan welcomed the five candidates to Monday night’s election meeting at St Mark’s Catholic Church, Pakuranga. Crowd? More than 100, fewer than 200. Those fighting for the Pakuranga seat vacated by long-time MP Maurice Williamson are Simeon Brown (National), Barry Kirker (Labour), Suzanne Kelly (NZ First), Carrie Stoddart-Smith (Maori) and Guy Hunt (Greens), were under the pump. The time master was strict. Very strict. On abortion, Kelly said NZ First firmly believed the matters were both conscience votes, “deeply personal choices which cannot be decided by MPs in Parliament” but by binding referendum. Brown agreed both issues were conscience issues “which means

that each MP must decide”. And, straight off the song sheet his leader Bill English used in the Leaders’ Debate on Newshub on the same night, Brown said he didn’t see the need to decriminalise abortion as the regulations had been in place since the 1970s. He had a number of concerns however with assisted suicide and was open to the views of the electorate. Hunt came out flying and, like the Labour leader Jacinda Ardern on Monday night, emphasised abortion should not fall under Crimes Act legislation. With medicallyassisted death, he would support a law change provided a number of safeguards were in place. Kirker said Labour was going to refer the abortion legislation to the Law Commission for review. “Per-

sonally I don’t need a change to the law.” No to euthanasia too. “The Bill before parliament now, I would be voting against it.” MPs will be forced to vote on whether or not euthanasia should be legal, after the End of Life Choice bill from by ACT leader David Seymour was drawn from Parliament’s ballot in June. Stoddart-Smith doesn’t believe it’s a matter for politicians. “My conscience vote will be the vote of the Pakuranga electorate.” She was adamant the inclusion of the abortion law under the Crimes Act was a violation of human rights. And they fielded loads more questions. Creditable performances from all of them really.
Taiwan Day The two day event that celebrates Taiwanese culture with a focus on art, culture, food and stage performances will be held on September 9 and 10. To be held at the Aotea Square, the local Taiwanese community invites everyone to experience the beautiful Taiwanese food and acrobatic performance specially from Taiwan. The event is expected to attract 15,000 people of all ages and cultural backgrounds from local communities and overseas. The event’s goal is to encourage greater understanding between cultures and developing mutual co-operation.

Call for new Cut red tape now: Beachlands school Smith J
on Reeves, the NZ First list candidate in Hunua, would re-open all the rural police stations closed in New Zealand in the past year and buy land for a high school in Beachlands. Reeves, 45, is going up against incumbent Andrew Bayly (National) and wants voters to give NZ First their party vote to ensure he gets in on the list. “For the first time Hunua electorate will have two MPs. Competition is good and I believe having both myself and a local electorate MP can only mean more attention will be given to the region by Central Government,” he said. “It will also mean if you have an issue and feel the local electorate MP has not helped resolve it, you will be able to contact me, as your New Zealand First List MP based in Hunua electorate. “That is why it is very important you party vote New Zealand First this election.” He feels the major issues are mass open-door immigration and housing; Auckland Council and Auckland Transport; a secondary school for Beachlands and crime. “New Zealand First

demand 1800 extra police on the beat within three years. This is catch-up to pay for the freeze and cuts made to the police by the National Government,” said Reeves. “NZ First will ensure all rural police stations are no longer single-staffed. We will reopen the 41 rural police stations National has closed down in the past year. Whitford/Beachlands will have additional staffing resources allocated.” Reeves, the co-owner of an advertising company and an account manager for a media company, was the co-
ordinator and co-founder of the Public Transport Users Association and committee member of the Campaign for Better Transport. He is lobbying for better transport and investment in public transport. “Ironically, last year Mayor Phil Goff campaigned on wanting more transparency and, once in power, immediately dumped the only two democraticallyelected board members off the board of Auckland Transport,” Reeves said. “Now ratepayers have no voice in that organisation. I will personally work to change Auckland Council and Auckland Transport and other out-of-control Council Controlled Organisations.” On immigration and housing, he is blunt. “If we do not slow housing demand through taking a breather on mass-immigration, we will never get on top of the current housing crisis,” And on education, he is equally unequivocal. “With the huge developments and expansion occurring in Beachlands, it is absolutely clear it is time for Central Government to purchase land in the district for a future secondary school.
R
ed tape is strangling business and growth and needs a massive shake-up, according to Anthony Smith, the ACT Party candidate for Hunua. “Businesses at all stages get over-regulated slowing down or stopping their potential for growth in New Zealand,” he said. “We would reform the Resource Management Act which is the biggest brick wall in the way on New Zealand business. Also we would look at reforming any form of loopy regulation.” Housing presented a range of problems. “The cost of housing is unacceptably high especially in Auckland where we also have a significant housing shortage,” said Smith, 27, who loves travel, arguing politics and spending time with family. “The high cost of housing is pushing costs onto tax payers as the Government increases spending on emergency housing.” He suggested tools such as income-related rent subsidies and accommodation supplements could help those struggling to get into

affordable accommodation. “(We need to) incentivise councils to consent more land for development and build more infrastructure, by sharing a portion of GST collected from construction,” he said. “Get councils out of the building standards process, by replacing council building inspections and compliance with a mandatory private insurance regime for buildings.” The other key issue for Smith, a software developer from Pukekohe, is education, “because the state system, whilst it’s world class, it currently leaves too many students disengaged and not achieving their potential”. “Growing up in the public school system I have seen this too many times myself.”
Smith, who grew up in Karaka and went to Te Hihi School and then onto Rosehill College, favours opening more partnership schools which would increase choice in New Zealand’s schooling system “which so far have been very successful”. “(We would) also allow for state and integrated schools to voluntarily apply for partnership school status, giving those schools who want it the same flexibilities enjoyed by partnership schools. “(We would) increase the government funding of independent schools. ACT will remove the funding cap and will increase the per-student funding – independent schools would receive 50 per cent of that of a state school student.”

orking full time and having a threemonth-old daughter would be enough to keep most people fairly busy. Throw in a bit of General Election campaigning for a highlycontested electorate and you start to wonder how Guy Hunt is still functioning as a normal person. If that wasn’t enough, he also plays golf, competes in IronMan triathlons and brews his own beer. Hunt is standing for the Green Party in the Pakuranga electorate – a safe National seat that’s been comfortably held by Maurice Williamson since 1987 – until now. Williamson announced last year that he would not stand for re-election in the 2017 General Election, instead accepting a diplomatic posting in Los Angeles. With Williamson out of the picture for the first time in decades, could it be time for a change of party in the seat? Hunt thinks so. “I think there is [a mood for change].Going out and talking to voters, there is a mood for green change.
Green Party Pakuranga candidate Guy Hunt. Photo supplied
“People are aware there are water issues, climate issues, social issues and I feel like the National Party are not quite dealing with those at [the right] pace. “Maurice was there about 30 years [and now] Simeon [Brown] has come along, he’s still quite young and new to the game and from talking to voters there is that mood for change – they are open to these new ideas.” Hunt – an accountant by trade – became involved with local politics after returning from London towards the end of 2015 and thinking he “could add some value”. He works as a Financial Controller for Bed Bath and Beyond at head office and says politics and business aren’t all that far apart.
“I’m a business person and most businesses are operated on a sustainable approach; that’s where you’re looking at the three legs of a tripod – environment, social issues and economic issues. “You need to be profitable, you need to ensure people in your business are getting the right support and everything they need and you’re looking after the environment.” He says it’s simply a matter of taking those basic principles to a government scale. “We need to make sure we’re doing it that way because at the moment I feel like we’re not doing it in a sustainable way.” It’s about the big picture, he says. “We need to be doing things on a much faster, grander scale.”
usinesswoman Suzanne Kelly’s warm demeanour masks a very real anger at a Government she feels has done its dash. A sensible mum of three teens with “Pakuranga in my blood”, she makes no bones about her distaste with the ruling National Party’s legacy which is now seriously impacting housing, immigration and health. “I got into politics to truly make a difference. I have had enough of the growing inequality and know we cannot have another term of a government only concerned about big business and overseas investors,” she said. “The stories I am hearing (are) about the huge hospital waiting lists and chronic shortage of doctors and specialists. This is what happens when your government lacks compassion for their people and puts money and big business first. I am here for all New Zealanders. We have had enough. Enough is enough.” From Half Moon Bay, Kelly believes NZ First “is the only party with backbone”. Fighting words, fuelled with emotion roused by the knowledge it is impacting her three teenage kids. Don’t mention housing (unaffordable housing, she corrects me). “Pakuranga and nearby suburbs are now been forced to accept high numbers of infill housing in the near future,

today, the Court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal by James Hardie and upheld the High Court’s representative orders. The Court of Appeal also allowed a cross appeal by the plaintiff group owners and granted an opt-in period of five months for new class members to join the claim rather than the 10 weeks and two weeks period that had been granted by the High Court. Further, the Court of Appeal allowed the own-
ers’ appeal against a judgment of Justice Susan Thomas in December 2015. The Court of Appeal concluded that Justice Thomas was wrong to decline to grant the declaratory orders sought at that time to preserve the position of members of the class for limitation purposes in the event that the court later declined to make a representative order. Costs have been awarded in favour of the owners.

in the east Auckland region. Mr Parker urges owners of buildings constructed since 1987 using Harditex or Titan board to get in touch to find out how to opt in to join the claim. Experts can be arranged to investigate whether the materials in question have been used and whether damage has resulted. The owners allege that leaks in their homes are attributable to inherent defects in cladding systems manufactured by James Hardie. They also claim James Hardie made misleading statements about its cladding systems in its technical literature. It is alleged that a large number of home-owners may be affected. James Hardie denies its cladding systems are defective and will be defending all claims. James Hardie argued that the claims were not suitable for representative class action procedure. In December 2016, the High Court made orders allowing the case to proceed as representative action (class action) and granted an opt-in period of 10 weeks for Harditex and two weeks for the Titan Board class. Costs have also been awarded in favour of the owners. Leaky building owners represented by Wellington law firm Parker & Associates first brought a product liability claim against James Hardie New Zealand Limited and James Hardie Company Studorp Limited in negligence and for breach in the Fair Trading Act in 2015. Thousands of properties were built using Harditex from 1987 until the early 2000s and Titan Board was widely used from 1995. The Howick-Pakuranga area greatly expanded during this time, as many new residential subdivisions were developed. The group’s lawyer, Dan Parker of Parker & Associates, told the Times it is aware there are many owners of properties clad in Harditex or Titan Board

Bridges promises better bus service ■■By Therese Henkin Transport Minister Simon Bridges was in Pakuranga on Tuesday to talk about transport issues in east Auckland. Bridges met Howick local Board chair David Collings and Howick Ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Dick Quax to discuss the Ameti project and the East West Link. With the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) Project set to get underway mid next year, Bridges says: “More than ever before we’ve got confidence in the plan we’ve got for east
Auckland.” Bridges takes this opportunity to remind us that the Ameti project, which is a designated bus way that connects Pakuranga to Panmure, will create a more regular and reliable bus service. “What you’re going to have here is specified public transport lanes without the cars which will allow them to run more regularly without delays. “It will take people further faster than they were able to go before,” he says. Bridges says that while there is always more to be done, meeting with the Howick Local Board and Howick Ward
councillors helps pinpoint the transport issues affecting east Aucklanders and come up with solutions together. “I completely understand the frustrations around public transport in this area, but we are getting on with it and making things happen. We are prioritising these issues.” Simeon Brown, National candidate for Pakuranga says: “It’s good to see central government and local government working close together. We’re all in agreement on what needs to be done and that’s something which I think we need to continue to do.”

behaviour.” Senior Maori wardens would be an instant deterrent for Maori and Polynesian youth offenders “since they grow up with the culture of respecting the elderly in the community,” he says. “When there is an incident, the wardens—a network of Maori, Chinese, and Polynesians— can call the police through a walkie-talkie or an app. I will also train them in Martial Arts so that they are safe and know how to protect them.” Mr Kang has already spoken to the head of Pacific wardens in Panmure. “They have around 40 members and are ready to go. All they need is uniforms, boots and a vehicle.” The man who walks the talk has even managed to source that. “A Chinese community safety group is ready to donate two vehicles to the wardens,” he says. Interestingly, within minutes of having spoken to business owners at the Botany Town Centre, he says he is happy to assist them in forming a Botany Business Association. “I am surprised there is no business association in Botany after all these years. After the break-ins at Michael Hill Jewellers and Spark, I am happy to sit with them and work on community wide solutions for law and order.” The Maori Party candidate of Chinese and Malay descent says that the Maori Party comprises of a group of people who are passionate

Maori Party candidate for Botany walks the talk etex Kang, Maori Party candidate for Botany is wasting no time. In the short time since his candidacy was announced in July, he has door knocked on over 2000 homes and addressed different Maori, Polynesian and Chinese groups. More importantly, he has spent time studying the law and order situation in the Botany electorate and is fast working on finding solutions. Integrating communities with the help of Tuhoe Maori activist Tama Iti and other supporters of the Maori Party, he has been brainstorming on creating safer communities. “The Botany community is the most culturally fragmented area,” says Mr Kang, Maori Party’s first Asian candidate. The association points to the genealogical ties between the Maoris and Asians over several millennia. The qualified pharmacist, nutritionist and bee-keeper, is a man with a mission. “As Maori Party we have responsibility to maintain justice, law and order,” says the established businessman. “The Maori, Polynesian and Asian communities have one thing in common. We all respect our old people and believe in looking after the whanau/fanau.” The martial arts instructor believes that one of the ways to help solve the law and order situation is to have Maori wardens. “Not many people are aware that Maori wardens have legislative rights for disorderly
Brookby School is working hard to gain it Bronze Enviro Award, which it is being assessed for in November. “As part of getting this award, for the first time this year we are running our Ag Day on September 24 as a ‘waste- free’ event where we try and reduce as much rubbish as possible as well as diverting as much as possible from landfill,” said Enviro teacher Sarah Blong. The main way we are doing this is having reycling and compost stations on the day that will be manned by our enthusiastic Enviro Council students as well as teaming up with some super helpful Howick College Enviro students. We are also using compostable food packaging as part of this strategy.”
■■ Wetex Kang , Maori Party candidate for Botany is happy to donate his salary to charity for the next three years. about justice. He recently addressed a public meeting where four leaders of Asian community safety groups drove all the way from Hamilton to listen to him talk about safer communities. “Sadly, the gap of have and have-nots has increased with the present government, and there is a clear association between poverty and crime. “Having Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) at street corners will also help reduce crime. In the city of Hangzhou in China there are no petty thefts since the offenders are immediately caught on camera,” he states as an example.
A man of action, he says if all goes well he may possibly arrange for Maori wardens before the elections. Mr Kang is also working with a group of people from different ethnicities on a plan of the high crime areas in Flat Bush where CCTV cameras can be installed. “I will also find out how much it will cost.” Determined to make a difference, Mr Kang says he is going to donate his salary to charity for the next three years says, “If you vote for me, I will speak for you and make it happen. I will be your mouth from the East.” Authorised by Wetex Kang 337 Chapel Road, Flat Bush, Auckland

itting in the front row and swaying to the rhythm of the beat at the Koanga Festival hosted on Saturday at Somerville Intermediate School was Whaea Taini Drummond, a familiar Maori figure known to all schools in the area. Twenty-six years ago, when Mrs Drummond had a vision of Koanga Festival with the idea of introducing the love for Maori culture in the school curriculum, she never imagined that the festival would grow to this magnitude. Heavy rain showers on Saturday morning didn’t curb the enthusiasm of hundreds of students from 38 primary and secondary schools in Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and Whitford as they turned up with their proud parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles and aunties in tow. The powhiri started with blessings by Mrs Drummond, while students of Pigeon Mountain and Bucklands Beach Intermediate carried the ceremonial waka down the aisle to the stage. Months of hard work and training unfolded on stage as kapa

haka groups accompanied by guitarists won the audiences over with their powerful and enchanting performances. Quick-witted Hone Riwaka Thorpe, MC for the day, kept the tempo going as he introduced spectators to the significance behind a range of kapa haka moves. Mrs Drummond who was cheering the students and singing along with her dear friend
Rose Katipa said they first hosted the Koanga Festival in 1991 at the Macleans College auditorium with just a handful of schools. “Those days we just had $200 and we put all of that towards hiring the auditorium,” she laughs. Koanga means spring time and the festival aptly celebrates the turn of seasons with a range of foot-tapping Maori cultural performances.

Kindy with a heart Anchorage Park Kindergarten was recently awarded for the second time, the Pa-Harakeke Award, which is the highest level, from the Heart Foundation for creating an environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity. “Our parents have been amazing in working with us in supporting their children with healthy food,” says head teacher Vicki Wright. “We achieved this by focusing on children developing physical fitness through the challenge of training and competing in a
duathlon and other physical play experiences.” Alongside this, children learnt how their body works and how important it is to eat healthy food to support their learning and development. “For our family celebrations like our disco last Friday, we promoted party food that can be fun and nutritious.” Parents, children and ambassador for Heart Foundation Adele Orangi, celebrated the award at the kindergarten by dressing up in red and bringing an array of healthy food to share for morning tea.

A fun morning at Pigeon Mountain School celebrated dads.

Father’s Day
Dads get time off for school O
nce a year, Pigeon Mountain Primary School takes time out to thank the special blokes in their students’ lives and enact the school motto of ‘Education with a heart’. The aroma of sausage sizzle filled the air at the school on Friday morning, as a multitude of fathers, granddads, big brothers and assorted relatives took time out of their day to spend some quality time with sons, daughters, nephews and nieces. The school had even gone to the effort of preparing light-hearted notes for the special men to show to employers in the hope of securing a large attendance at the event. It read: “Dear Boss, I’ll be late to work on Friday because I’ve been invited to the breakfast event at Pigeon Moun-
tain School. It’s really important that I go for my young one(s). Call Mr Dickinson if you don’t believe me!” ”The note was a little tongue-incheek,” says principal Ian Dickinson, “But we realise how difficult it is for many of our hard-working parents to get into school and share some time alongside their child. “By holding a breakfast time event and writing the note, we think we’ve generated a lot of interest, and the turnout was great. ”After sharing in some breakfast, the invited guests participated in a picture quiz alongside members of the school’s board and teachers, guessing the relatives of the Pigeon Mountain staff team, and then headed to classrooms to start the day alongside the children and classmates.

We have the resources to assist you in achieving your desired outcomes. We also provide information with regards to the Family Court and the Family Dispute Resolution services that provide media-
tion to resolve disputes about the care and contact with children. Our experienced and trained volunteers are here to help you find what you are seeking or even to offer a listening ear. For matters covering relationships, counselling, child support etc, contact us. We also provide free counselling for all these matters and especially for new migrants (Mandarin provided) who might be suffering from grief, abuse, anxiety and depression. Our skilled counsellors can assist students/ teens who may be victims of bullying, peer pressure or cyber abuse. Victims of harassment and stress in the workplace can be given advice and strategies on handling the situation they are in. Many other general matters are covered by the bureau such as payment of electric bills, utilities disputes, contacts for local recreational/social and sport activities, bus, ferry and train timetables.

Seniors
Special guests at CHT Lansdowne Residents at CHT Lansdowne Private Hospital and Rest Home were treated to a visit from some special guests last week. Residents had spent the last couple of months busy knitting blankets for the SPCA. It was near-impossible not to
crack a smile watching 7-weekold lambs – Mary and Jane – stumble over themselves and seeing the joy spread across residents’ faces. Both the residents and animals were overjoyed with the companionship!

t was on his third birthday at Anchorage Park Kindergarten that Arzan Todywalla’s father noticed his son kick a ball at the speed of a rocket. Arzan was 18 months old when his parents migrated to New Zealand. The young parents went through all the normal struggles as new migrants to ensure their children did well in life. After recognising Arzan’s talent, dad Viraf secured his admission at Fencibles United AFC when he turned six, expecting that after some years of practice, their son would be ready to play competitively. However, Arzan proved himself within the very first year by winning Most Valuable Player of the year in 2007 alongside other accolades – and he hasn’t stopped. In 2011, Arzan participated in a Futsal trial, a variant of football played indoors on a hard court that is smaller than a football pitch with five players on each team. He was selected and began to enjoy the challenges Futsal provided. Since then, Arzan has represented New Zealand overseas in the game and won the title of ‘All Star’ in 2014 – a much sought-after title by more

Flat Bush rally team Matt Jensen and Kieran Anstis finished second in class and eighth overall at Rally Coromandel, the 4th round of the New Zealand Rally Championship. With brake and car set-up issues, the team struggled through the first four stages of the day but were able to keep in touching distance of the front runners. The issues were resolved at the second service allowing the duo to have more confidence going into the final stages, with two sixth fastest stage times

moving them into eighth overall at the weekend. “We made a lot of new changes to our pace note system before the event that proved to be very positive,” says Jensen. “The conditions were tricky so to get the car home in one piece with a good result is a great feeling” The team’s focus is now on the next round in October at Rally Waitomo “We are really looking forward to the next event. We have a lot more speed to come.”

CLASSY RESULT IN COROMANDEL ❯❯ Page 19
Ferns ruin Matilda’s waltz bination of pace and accuracy on attack and some sharp defence right through the court. Kudos, too, for tireless centre Shannon Francois and wing attack Gina Crampton for their slick service to shooters Mes and the cool-headed Te Paea Selby-Rickit, who used her height to good effect. Jury, captain Katrina Grant and Samatha Sinclair excelled on defence to preserve the home team’s early advantage as the Diamonds struggled to penetrate the zone defence. To achieve such a fine win without the experience of brilliant Maria Tutaia, Laura Langman, Kayla Cullen and Jane Watson said much for the selection and planning of coach Southby. For Jury, Sinclair and Crampton this was their first start against Australia. As Silver Fern internationals,
Crampton, Selby-Rickit, Watson and Maia Wilson are just in their second year. Having built depth, the future appears bright, especially looking forward to next year’s Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast where Tutaia, Langman, Cullen and Watson will hope to make a contribution. When champion goal attack Tutaia returns, it will be interesting to see if Southby promotes the towering Selby-Rickit to the starting goal shoot ahead of the more agile Mes. All three have much to commend them. In the meantime the Ferns will be eager to avenge their loss to England in the three-test Taini Jamison series starting in Porirua on Thursday night. Then they can expect a fierce
Australian response in next month’s four-test Constellation Cup series. Meanwhile, it was pleasing to see captain Chris Wood lead from the front in the All Whites comprehensive 6-1 football win against the Solomon Islands before more than 10,000 fans at QBE. All three of the rangy Wood’s goals confirmed his class, with Kosta Barbarousis and Michael McGlinchey notching the others against a side possessing individual flair and pace but little team work. Coming off the reserve bench to make his debut would have been a big moment for promising 20-yearold striker Myer Bevan who looks to have a bright future. Nine losses on the trot has completed another sad NRL season for a Warriors team that has not learned

the lessons of past failures. No wonder owner Eric Watson is ready to sell them at the right price. Having turned down Paul Davys’ $15 million offer, it would seem he wants more than they are worth on current and past form. High hopes following the acquisition of Kevin Foran, Issac Luke, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and coach Stephen Kearney has not reaped the reward loyal fans deserve. Tuivasa-Sheck remains a genuine talent. But making him captain was a burden rather than a reward. ➤

etball coach Janine Southby produced two master strokes that led to her rookie Silver Ferns team winning the Quad Series in Invercargill at Australia’s expense on Sunday. One was matching 1.92m goal keep Kelly Jury against 1.93m Diamonds goal shoot Caitlin Bassett to counter the Aussie sharpshooter’s usual height advantage. The other was switching the bibs of her own shooters to allow the more mobile Bailey Mes to play goal attack. Jury’s response was a MVP performance that saw Bassett side-lined in the third quarter before the Ferns clinched an emphatic 57-47 victory. Having suffered a rare loss to England earlier, there was immense pressure placed on the Ferns to respond. And they did through a com-
