arnings about a storm in the `P’ cup have been long coming. Concerns over methamphetaminecontaminated houses have easily overtaken worries about leaky homes. Industry reports state that at least 40 per cent of New Zealand homes tested return a positive result for methamphetamine. Environmental scientist Stephanie Brookes, director of MethWise, says that statistics suggest a slightly lower detection rate for Howick and Pakuranga homes. “However we do not know the full scale of the issue as yet,” she points out. There have been tales of horror about the demolition of methcontaminated private and Stateowned homes, the costs of which are in the millions. Methamphetamine, commonly known as P in New Zealand, is also known as crystal meth, speed, ice, yaba or crank and is a toxic and addictive drug which is a powerful stimulant. Side effects include paranoia, brain damage, liver and kidney damage, skin and respiratory problems and birth defects.

omen should not be using Mellons Bay Beach alone, a local police inspector says, following reports late last week of men doing indecent acts while watching female beach users. Inspector Jared Pirret’s recommendation comes after police received two calls of a similar nature last Thursday afternoon regarding possibly two different males doing an indecent act in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach. Both incidents occurred at approximately 4pm and were reported by the victims to the police a short time later. “On both occasions when confronted by the victims the male did not attempt to touch or talk to the victims and there was no attempt to abduct or coerce the victim in any way,” Mr Pirret said. Police patrolled the area that afternoon but were unable to locate either male and are now conducting mobile patrols and increasing visibility in Mellons Bay. The two schools in the area are aware of the reports. A Macleans College

spokesman said the school had been made aware through social media that there had been a male acting suspiciously in the area. “We have heard that he has been seen at Howick Beach, Macleans Reserve (flying fox) and Mellons Bay. Nothing has occurred at Macleans College.” The spokesman said the school had made contact with the local police and had left the situation with them. Principal of Mellons Bay School Judy Brown said she had informed the school community of the reported incidents. Inspector Pirret said during both incidents last Thursday afternoon, the male was observed by female beach users attempting to hide behind rocks or bushes while carrying out “an indecent act”. He said that it is unfortunately a “seasonal trend” in which police see that type of offending occurring in the warmer weather and with more people using the beaches. Mr Pirret said it was unlikely that the same offender was responsible for both incidents as the descriptions supplied

by the victims were very different. The first offender was described as a male Caucasian with a beer belly, aged between 60 and 70 years old. The second offender was described as a male Caucasian with brown hair and an average-to-thin build, aged between 35 and 45 years old. “I would recommend that all females using the beach do not do so alone and if they are aware of any

suspicious males or observe this type of behaviour to take a photograph of the offender if practical and call the police,” Mr Pirret said. “A good description, direction of travel, and mode of transport (vehicle or on foot) is essential to apprehending these offenders.” However, he stressed the importance of public safety. “Under no circumstances confront these males.” Meanwhile, police issued a “seasonal” warning to some local schools about safety around strangers last month. A special notice from Botany Downs Primary School to parents on November 3 asked parents to discuss with their children issues raised by the Counties Manukau School Community Police. “Police have identified that this time of year shows an increase in suspicious activity around schools in relation to students being approached by people not known to them,” the message said. Last week there were two reports of strangers approaching youths in west Auckland and two weeks ago an 11-year-old boy

was abducted in Ranui and sexually assaulted. The message sent to local schools in early November was designed to provide simple advice to children, young people, schools and communities regarding the risks associated with children being approached by people they don’t know who offer lifts or invite them towards a vehicle. “Police advise students to walk to school in groups whenever possible and avoid routes that are out of sight from the general public,” the message said. Area Commander, Counties Manukau East Police, Inspector Wendy Spiller said at the time that in the past it has been a seasonal trend and police simply wanted to be on the front foot. “We have 70 schools in the area. There is no immediate risk, moreover it is a just reminder,” she said. ➤➤Any information about suspicious behaviour can be supplied to the Ormiston Police Station on (09) 250 2800 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Q. What do Dermal Fillers do?

A. Dermal Fillers are great for adding volume, lifting sagging areas and filling in deep skin folds and depressions. They rejuvenate and freshen our faces.

Q. What areas can you treat?

A. As we age our cheeks unfortunately start to slide down our face, this causes hollowing under the eyes, and a deepening of the fold that runs from the outside nostril to the corner of the mouth. As a consequence the corners of our mouths turn downwards, the marionettes deepen and jowls form. Fillers are great at adding volume to lips, reducing hollowing around the eyes, at lifting cheeks, marionettes and jowls, and filling in the deepening folds around the nose and corners of the mouth.

Q. Are they safe?

A. Adverse events include infection, blocked blood vessels which is a significant event, and a poor or unsatisfactory outcome. We have all seen lips that have been overdone. Dr Morunga is a Fellow New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine, is experienced ,and has performed well over 2,500 Dermal Filler treatments. As part of his safety armoury and if required he can dissolve away Dermal Filler, meaning treatments are reversible, increasing the safety margin considerably.

Botany by-election

Turinsky back in the game ■■By Farida Master

M

ike Turinsky’s popularity is soaring thanks to good, oldfashioned political turmoil. He has gained good mileage out of the ugly crossfire between Howick Local Board chair David Collings and former local board member Lucy Schwaner, who surprised everyone with her resignation minutes after the official swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected board. While the Howick Local Board, Botany subdivision candidate Mr Turinsky is disappointed he missed a seat on the local board in the first round, he is not unhappy about his name regularly popping up in the aftermath of the local board election debacle. The announcement of Botany by-elections means that the youth worker and chief executive of Young Life NZ Trust has to once again start wearing out his shoes, door-knocking in Botany. But he seems to have taken it in his stride. With the by-elections estimated to top $100,000, Ms Schwaner has suggested that Mr Turinsky - who finished

fourth in the elections - be given a chance to fill in the vacancy unchallenged. That would save the taxpayers dollars, she said. It led the Labour party to angrily contest her claim. A press release that quotes Labour candidate for Botany, Mark Johnson, argued: “Ms Schwaner is evidently unaware how local politics work, if she thinks fewer candidates is the financial solution to the scandal she has created in the Botany sub-division. This boondoggle will cost

over twice the salary of a Howick Local Board member, regardless of how many parties contest the vacant seat.” Mr Turinsky didn’t respond to it! Instead he kept a low profile. But come November 24, the first official day for filing in nomination papers for byelections, and he was present at the Ministry of Internal Affairs office in Manukau. Accompanied by his dad who is visiting from Alaska, Mr Turinsky told the Times that having worked with the youth at Botany Downs Secondary

College as well as at Pakuranga College and Edgewater College, over the years, he’s familiar dealing with the local board and council on matters relating to youth. Turinsky believes that by supporting youth “we reduce crime. We must invest in the next generation, those who will pay rates, be employed and run businesses in the future. “I am comfortable working with diverse groups,” he says. While the 43-year-old father-of-two is unaware of the number of candidates filing in their nomination for the by-elections in February 2017, he says he personally knows Labour candidate Mark Johnson. “We’ve both worked together at Botany College and I respect him,” he says graciously. “I’ve got high regards for him. He’s a nice guy.” It’s a welcome change from the free-for-all verbal boxing match at the boardroom drama. Having contested the elections three years ago, Mr Turinsky says his ideology of being ‘practical and not political’ would work well given the current scenario at the Howick Local Board.

Transport

Minister promises big investment ■■By Laura Brookes Traffic congestion and transport woes were the hot topics being thrown about by the Transport Minister and the local business community. Hosted by National MP Jami-Lee Ross, last Friday’s breakfast meeting held at Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook - was attended by Simon Bridges and around 150 business people from the Greater East Tamaki Business Association (GETBA). Mr Bridges talked about Auckland’s transport issues, and wasted no time confirming the Government’s investment into Auckland’s transport situation would not be impacted by funds

being poured into Kaikoura following last week’s quake. He admitted progress had been slow on the development of Auckland’s transport system in the past, but says today’s Government had “unprecedented confidence” in its investment plans, and an unprecedented number of multi-billion dollar projects currently taking place in Auckland. Up until now, he said, these projects had been mostly focussed on inner city areas. However, Mr Bridges is confident the new Auckland Transport Alignment Plan (ATAP) will see money flowing away from the CBD and into the eastern, southern and western areas of Auckland, where there is a shortage of

strong transport connections. “The truth of this is that successive governments underinvested for a number of decades... and in fairness, there were other things they needed to do under tight fiscal circumstances, but that’s not true anymore. Transport is getting really serious investment... there is work physically being done right now, and more to come. “We’ve got some pretty good options that we can use.” One of these options is the East-West transport link, which will go through consenting at the end of this year and is estimated to cost between $1.2 and $1.8 billion – a project Mr Bridges confirmed is taking priority

over the Reeves Road flyover. The Western ring route – a 48 kilometre motorway alternative to SH1 – is another Auckland-based project Mr Bridges is confident will make a difference, with an expected completion date of 2021 and a $2.4 billion spend. It’s a project he said will “have a palpable, discernible, tangible effect” on east Auckland congestion as well as other areas of the city once completed. The AMETI busway, the designation of the South Eastern Arterial as a state highway and the eventual construction of the Reeves Road flyover were also discussed as likely solutions to Auckland’s transport dilemma.

botany By-election

Two men standing so far ■■By Scott Yeoman Only two candidate nominations have been received so far for the upcoming Botany byelection and both men ran in October. Labour’s Mark Johnson and Mike Turinsky, who campaigns under the “Practical not Political” banner, will both have another go at securing a Botany subdivision seat on the Howick Local Board. Mr Turinsky received the fourth highest number of votes in the October election (3912) and Mr Johnson was fifth (3144). The by-election, which will be held on February 17, 2017 is expected to cost more than $100,000. It was triggered by the surprise resignation of newly-sworn in member Lucy Schwaner last month. Ms Schwaner, the wife of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, quit minutes after being sworn in at the Howick Local Board’s inauguration ceremony after narrowly losing the vote for chairmanship to David Collings, 4-5. Candidate nominations for the by-election opened last Thursday (November 24) and close at 12pm on December 22. It will be a postal vote like the October election. Auckland Council electoral officer Dale Ofsoske said if people think they have useful skills and ideas to make a contribution to their local community and can represent the needs and wants of the approximately 37,000 eligible voters in the Botany subdivision, now is their chance. A candidate seeking nomination needs to be over the age of 18, a New Zealand citizen registered on the electoral roll, and have two electors enrolled in the Botany subdivision nominate him or her. Each nomination must be accompanied by a $200 GST inclusive deposit. Voting documents will be posted to eligible voters from January 26, with the ballot closing at 12pm on February 17.Council has said there is no alternative under the Local Electoral Act but to run a by-election.The by-election will be conducted under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001. The result of the by-election will be available on the afternoon of Friday, February 17, and the Times will have live coverage of it on our website and on our Facebook and Twitter pages. ‘Check rentals for meth’

Questions raised over handbag theft

➤➤From page 1 “Buying a home is the biggest investment one makes in a life time and finding out that the dream nest that has all of life’s hard-earned savings literally blow up in smoke is devastating,” says Faz Najmi, one of the top selling real estate agents with Ray White, Howick. “We understand the moral responsibility when we sell a house. If the new home-owner wants to be reassured that everything is 100 per cent right, we suggest they get it meth tested,” he says. If a meth-contaminated home is to be resold, it is now mandatory for the real estate agent to inform prospective home buyers of the substance clean up before the client steps into the premises. This is for health and safety reasons. MethWise advises property managers or landlords to employ regular meth testing between tenancies. “If you or your property manager suspects or identifies suspicious behaviour or tenants, it doesn’t hurt to book in a test during a tenancy,” says Ms Brookes. “However do ensure there is a testing clause in the agreement for the consultant’s access to the property.” In addition to that it’s crucial to have chemical contamination cover added to your insurance policy if you own a rental

property, she says. “As methamphetamine is becoming more accessible and more affordable, we will continue to see rising statistics in the number of homes impacted by meth use and manufacturer.” A rental property owner from Dannemora admits that a `P’ insurance cover has given him the much-needed peace of mind. “A clean-up and repair costs of a contaminated home can be a nightmare if, God forbid, our tenants turn out to be meth users or, worse still, meth manufacturers,” he reasons. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has denounced the scourge of

methamphetamine which not only heavily impacts the lives of drug users, but their families and the wider community as well. It also enables gangs and organised crime to flourish. He says that almost $15 million seized from criminals in the last year will be invested in anti-drug initiatives. Interestingly, the meth scare has given rise to a whole new clean up industry. It’s reported that the government has spent more than $20 million on tests and clean-ups of Housing New Zealand homes. However, some call it an

overkill. More so, in cases where the drug has been used and not manufactured on the premises. Ms Brookes says the confusion is due to the unregulated gap in the market and prevalence of the issue. “If you require your property to undergo decontamination, you must ensure that they are an experienced decontamination team,” she warns. “That they are independent of any consulting or testing company; use safe practices and have the ability to identify products they are dealing with asbestos, toxic chemicals found in former meth labs.”

A local shopping centre is questioning a social media report allegedly involving criminals using a vehicle to block in a shopper before making off with her handbag. A post put up in the last 24 hours on the closed Facebook group East Auckland Grapevine has attracted 15 comments after a member wrote: “Please be careful when getting into your cars at Botany Town Centre. On Wednesday afternoon a car came and boxed a woman in so she could not reverse out of the car park and stole her hand bag from the passenger side.” The Times attempted to contact the author of the comment but has not heard back. However, Desiree Clark, assistant centre manager at Botany Town Centre, told the Times today she knows of no such occurrence. “I have seen the post and have checked with our security team and no such incident was reported in to them,” she said. “We take a proactive approach to all security incidents and trends and work closely with NZ Police and Botany Crimewatch Patrol to ensure that we are responding appropriately to any rising trends,” she said. A comment on the Grapevine post by Zena Maree read: “Yes my poor young daughter-in-law had someone reach through passenger window and take wallet and cell phone - was very shaken with baby in car. Not nice!!??” She told the Times the incident occurred a month ago and was at a petrol station. The nearest to the town centre is across the road.

Accounts are in surplus, jobs on the rise

L

ast month the Minister of Finance, Hon Bill English, presented the Crown accounts which highlighted a surplus of $1.8 billion for the year to June 2016. This is a significant increase from $414 million in 2014/2015. New Zealand’s economy has made significant progress over the past eight years. Unemployment is down to 4.9 per cent, jobs have increased by 185,000 over three years and the average wage is up to $58,000. Our economy has transformed into one of the fastest growing in the developed world and it continues to go from

strength to strength. In spite of the Canterbury earthquakes and the Global Financial Crisis, the Bill English has delivered operating surpluses since 2014/15. This has been achieved whilst also increasing spending on essential social services. We are able to do this because we have worked hard to reduce ineffective spending of taxpayers’ money. Irrespective of world events and natural disasters, New Zealanders expect our health services to provide the necessary care to meet their needs. This is why we have invested $96m to further

increase elective surgeries by 4000 a year. We have also increased the number of doctors and nurses by 6100 since 2008. New Zealanders also expect our education system to flourish. It’s great news that our ECE participation is up to 96.6 per cent. Our NCEA Level 2 achievement has increased from 59.3 per cent to 83.3 per cent over the last eight years. “It’s all about the client” I

t’s that mantra combined with a friendly, warm and engaging manner which keeps people coming back to Jenny Benoy. With a sound knowledge based on many years in the real estate sector, Jenny has a myriad of experiences with property, which began in her native Zimbabwe in administration before moving to rentals, then sales where she discovered her true passion. She settled in Auckland’s eastern suburbs 16 years ago, with the enormous challenge of establishing a new life with her young family and gaining recognition in the real estate business. Nowadays, she has a portfolio of clients who actively promote and recommend her services – a testament to her hard work and success. Jenny understands the emotions involved in buying and selling property. “It all comes with building trust” she says. “I like to think that real estate

is not all about the sale but doing the right thing for my clients. It is hugely important that I make the sale process as easy and stress free as possible, helping them every step of the way”. It’s this attitude and her ability to form honest and open relationships with all her clients that form part of her success. “What I love about this career is that every day is different, you never know who you are going to meet or what property you are going to view, this results in a very stimulating work environment. It is a real privilege to be involved in helping people sell or buy a home, with many of these clients becoming good friends”. Jenny understands the needs of families and ensures she maintains one-on-one contact with all her clients. “When people hand their keys over to me, they know that I personally will be with them all the way. Everything is confidential and being trustworthy

and maintaining integrity is of the utmost importance.” “It’s about exceeding the client’s expectations, being available for them at all times – happily meeting with them or taking their calls late in the evening if necessary. It is essential that the client is confident and happy that I am doing the very best for them at all times to achieve a great result”. she says. Working in the Howick Branch of Bayleys Real Estate, Jenny and her clients have the support of New Zealand’s largest full service real estate company, offering a unique marketing portfolio that stands head and shoulders above the rest.” If you’re considering selling, or simply interested in knowing the potential value of your property in today’s market, give Jenny a call. You’ll be dealing with a respected, professional agent who will go above and beyond to meet your needs.

■■By Farida Master t would be interesting to know what Prime Minister John Key and the Leader of Opposition Andrew Little were discussing along with Mayor Phil Goff as they sat next to each other at the Indian Newslink Ninth Indian Business Awards on Monday evening. Jackie Clarke, the feisty mistress of ceremonies, called them the “three amigos” as the friendly politicians shared notes and obliged everyone with selfies at the glittering event held at the SkyCity Convention Centre. Mr Key was in a jolly good mood as he regaled the audience with anecdotes about his trip to Delhi with the Indian delegation. “Mr Modi is a fantastic PM,” he said at the business excellence awards. However the trip to India had an unscheduled stopover at Townsville when the plane transporting the delegation broke down, forcing them to cancel their scheduled visit to the Mumbai stock exchange. “And what do you do when you are stuck in a cubbyhole?,” said Mr Key. “You go straight to the pub. There, I meet this guy with a big Australian hat asking me, `Are you the Prime Minister of New Zealand?’ “Later they sent a journalist to interview me and put me on page one, two, three, had an editorial on me, the cartoon and practically six pages devoted to me. I have never had so much media coverage,” he said lightheartedly. The well orchestrated soirée to honour business professionals of Indian origin was a laugh-aminute with the “sober driver of the microphone” as Ms Clarke called herself, got ministers to sportingly dance to her beat. That included Mr Key as well as Minister of Police and Corrections, Judith Collins and Minister for Ethnic Communities, Sam Lotu-liga. An enchanting Indian fusion dance performance by Ratna Venkat with the band Gurus of Grove added a special touch to an entertaining evening organised by a one-man-army of Venkat Raman, editor of the 17-year-old Indian newspaper based in East Tamaki.

Water safety

Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade launches nationwide C

oastguard has announced the launch of the Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade for 2016, a popular and highly successful boating safety initiative which for the first time this year is going nationwide. For 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, Coastguard is there for boaties and the community as the charity saving lives at sea. As part of its mission – saving lives at sea through search and rescue, communication and education – the ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’ campaign is again launching in time for summer. The ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’ van, supplied free-of-charge by Giltrap Group and laden with lifejackets, will be visiting more than 35 major boat ramps and locations throughout the country on weekends and key days throughout the busy summer holiday period. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is simple and effective - bring your old or damaged lifejacket to the Old4New team at one of the many pre-advertised locations, and receive a discount on a quality, modern and fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejacket. Boaties and members of the public are encouraged to visit the van and trade in their old lifejackets, where they can also get advice about boating and water safety from the friendly team on site at each location. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade forms a key part of Coastguard’s advocacy for safe and enjoyable boating over the 2016/17 summer boating season. Only 70 per cent of boaties say they wear a lifejacket at all times on the water. This rate is highest for kayakers and canoeists (83 per cent), and falls to just over 60 per cent for people in power boats and 55 per cent for people in sail boats. Given that the majority of boating fatalities could have been prevented had the person been wearing a lifejacket, the Old4New campaign aims to help save lives and change attitudes. “While the increasing use of lifejackets has resulted in lives being saved, the failure to wear lifejackets in small craft that are prone to capsize, especially those under 6m in length, remains the primary reason why lives are lost

Transport New South Wales and launched for the first time in New Zealand in 2014, has seen more than 4000 lifejackets traded. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of lifejackets while also taking practical steps to address the issue. At the end of the campaign, Coastguard will also distribute good condition traded-in lifejackets (that still meet NZ standards) to communities in need. In addition, the Boating & Outdoors group are supporting the initiative by offering the trade-in at their 23 stores nationwide, from Northland to Invercargill, during specific weeks of the campaign. The initiative kicks off on Saturday December 3 at 8am at the Half Moon Bay boat ramp and continues to visit popular waterside destinations until early February. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade van will be visiting 35 major boat ramps and locations around the country.

Nothing like a good game of croquet at 91 ■■By Kelly Teed

om and Helen Hopkins could be mistaken for part of the furniture at Pakuranga Croquet Club. The Cockle Bay residents have been playing the game since 1978, originally in Gonville, Whanganui before moving up to Auckland. After making the move north, they played for Howick Croquet Club before the Pakuranga Croquet Club opened. Mrs Hopkins was the first to try the game, but her husband quickly joined in the fun. “I went first while he played golf. Then one day he came to pick me up and never left!” she laughed. Mr Hopkins was named the Auckland Singles Champion in his division in his first year playing in Auckland.

He fondly remembers his time playing in Australia, and the friendship and helpfulness that was shown by their competitors. “The games are based on friendliness,” he said, “You have to know the friendship of the game to understand. “All the people here [at Pakuranga] are our extended family,” added Mrs Hopkins. Club manager John Wood said the game has a number of benefits, especially for those older in age. “It keeps you fit and healthy and it’s good for people who are a bit older because it’s less physical. There’s no bending like there is in bowls.” The social benefits aren’t to be understated either. “Some people wouldn’t get out of the house if it wasn’t for [croquet],” said Mr Wood.

Tom Hopkins, 91, isn’t letting old age get in the way of a good game of croquet. Times photo Wayne Martin

Thirty-eight years after first stepping onto the lawn, Mr Hopkins has recently retired from tournament play, but neither he nor Mrs Hopkins plan to put down their mallets for good. Mr Hopkins and Mr Wood both played in the recent New World tournament and, although

they didn’t win, they played well enough for Mr Hopkins to exit on a high. Mr Hopkins will continue to play club croquet three times a week and will still play interclub competitions. Even without tournament play, the game is still time-consuming, but that’s just part of the fun according to Mrs Woods. “We enjoy it so we put more time into it. It takes as much time as you want it to,” she said. At 91 years of age, Mr Hopkins doesn’t have the physical power he used to but he hasn’t let that stop him. “He’s never lost how to play the game,” said Mrs Hopkins. Mr Hopkins plans to continue playing as long as he can. “My brain is still able to work it out. I’m still playing – I love the game.”

anniversary

Work must start now for Mt Erebus air crash national memorial P

lanning and fundraising for a national memorial for the 257 people who died in the 1979 Mt Erebus air accident must begin now, on the 37th anniversary of the disaster. National memorial spokesperson, aviation chaplain and historian, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, of Howick, said surviving spouses, siblings, and children of the victims are aging and many are asking for a national memorial to the accident, in time for the 40th anniversary. Monday was the 37th anniversary of Mt Erebus air accident – New Zealand’s worst civil disaster (November 28, 1979). All 257 on board died after the Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZK-NZP, Flight TE901 crashed into the mountain during an Antarctic sightseeing flight. It was the fourth worst aviation disaster in the world at the time, and is still the worst aviation accident in the Southern Hemisphere. Dr Waugh said the 37th anniversary gives the hundreds of families affected, and New Zealand as a nation, the opportunity to remember and reflect on a harrowing event in our history – and the opportunity to consider a long overdue national memorial. A voluntary advisory group, with Lady June Hillary as patron, is advocating for the new national memorial. The national memorial, planned to be ready by the 40th anniversary in November 2019, will be a special place for families affected by the tragedy, to gather for reflection, prayer and contemplation. It is a significant omission that there is presently no public memorial to the Erebus accident where all 257 names are gathered together. Dr Waugh said the 40th anniversary in November 2019 will be a “very suitable time” for the dedication of a new national memorial. “The Mt Erebus accident with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is still New Zealand’s worst civil disaster. New Zealand as a nation continues to be profoundly affected by the tragedy,” Dr Waugh said. “It is a pastoral and public oversight that nothing has yet been done to establish a national

Remarkable story of Kiwi ingenuity Dr Noel Derbyshire talked about naval ships at a U3A meeting. Reporter Laura Brookes was there They may be older, but when it comes to exercising the brain, they’re not slowing down anytime soon. The final University of the Third Age (U3A) meeting for 2016 kept right in theme with the Royal New Zealand Navy’s 75th anniversary celebrations. WWII RNZN Cadet Gary Grayburn was the first speaker at the November 24 meeting, at Old Flat Bush School Hall. Mr Grayburn was brought up during the Depression years, joined the navy in 1943 as a 15-year-old and started working as a seaman boy on auxiliary ships. Over the next few years, he experienced a narrow escape from a Kamikaze pilot, the signing of the peace treaty, and the harrowing memories of contact with prisoners of war.

“I’ve never felt so sorry for people in all my life,” he said. 50th anniversary in 2029, our advisory committee’s view is that waiting longer would be uncaring and insensitive to so many older relatives,” Dr Waugh said. “Our advisory group is in touch with many surviving spouses and siblings and other close family, who are now in their 70s and 80s, and who would very much like to have a proper national memorial to the air accident. “Such a national memorial will be a sacred set-apart place where families and others can gather on special remembering occasions.” The advisory group is in consultation with many families of those who died, the Government (Ministry for Culture & Heritage), Air New Zealand, and a variety of other organisations. Dr Waugh said the advisory group is aware that planning and fundraising needs to progress as soon as possible, if the national memorial is to be ready for the 40th anniversary in November 2019. t’s December 1 and the countdown to Christmas is racing along. Without trying to sound like the Grinch - if you can do some planning now, you can avoid the regrets in January when the credit card statements arrive! Here are some tips for making the most of your finances over this time: Have the Secret Santa conversation with your extended family now - many families are opting to pull a name out of the hat and buy for that one person, setting a limit. This relieves the pressure of buying multiple presents. You’ll find pretty much everyone is in the same boat and relieved to have boundaries! My family has also done this for the nieces and nephews – the children love being responsible to choose a gift up to a certain value for a cousin. Talk to your children about Christmas and set expectations - it may be one Christmas present and a stocking or it may be that the family is going on a holiday later and so this year it will be smaller presents. Make a list of everyone you need to buy for and put a $ limit for each person. Take the list with you when you shop and try to stick to it. Cash is king. Withdraw the amount

Photo supplied dudeiwantthat.com you have budgeted for gifts and avoid using credit cards and store cards, you’ll spend less – and you’ll be able to keep track of your spend in that shopping trip! When the cash is gone – stop spending!! Start early. Don’t be that person running madly around the mall on Christmas Eve looking stressed and panic buying. The earlier you start, the more likely you’ll be able to get a bargain and find a special present. Special and thoughtful does not have to equate to expensive. When planning the celebration lunch or dinner, ask everyone to bring a plate of their favourite dish and bring along a bottle of Christmas bubbles! This shares the load and the cost and everyone is happy they are

contributing. Christmas is a special time of year for families, but the gloss can fade if it costs more than you can afford and you end up paying for it in January and beyond. It is about giving but most importantly it’s about the people you are with, not spending beyond your means and having to pay for it for the next 12 months or beyond. Planning in advance and sticking to a budget will help you enjoy this special time of year without the pain of large credit card bills in January. If you are having trouble getting your finances in order, seek help, it’s never too late. ✦ Dianne Barlow is a Strategic Consultant at financial personal trainers EnableMe, Auckland South and East

SUMMER SALE! SLEEPYHEAD & SERTA UP TO

All in it together, Rotary Club of Somerville had a working bee to create head gear for the Howick Santa Parade. Photo supplied

Santa Claus is coming to town

T

here are just three more sleeps until the Howick Santa Parade. With 53 floats and a rhapsody of colour, action, dance and culture the most awaited event of the year is almost here. Excitement is mounting as different community groups, schools, clubs, bands, day care centres/kindergartens, non-profit and commercial organisations put their final touches to their floats. Recently spotted were members of the Rotary Club of Somerville busy making Pohutukawa flowers and head gear as they sharpened their skills at some fancy craftwork. Like last year, different Rotary clubs in East Auckland will join hands to work on a meaningful theme and proudly walk the talk at the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday. The RSA Club in the heart of Howick were also overheard discussing an interesting theme to go with the float this year. With a theme of Clubs and Hearts they will be playing the right cards! Heading up the group will be the joker of the pack, none other than Eric Wilson, the oldest member of the club. After the good response they have been getting over the last couple of years, the Bellyful Christmas Fundraiser will be held at Mad Mikes Howick Tyres and Alignment at 33 Wellington St, Howick. There will be a sausage

sizzle, face painting, monster raffle and sweet treats amongst other exciting activities. A show-stopper will be the Ferrari 458 Speciale on display. Bellyful volunteers deliver meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children, who are struggling with illness - particularly those lacking a good support network Remember that the Howick Santa Parade kicks off on Sunday at 2.30pm in Howick Village, with pre-parade entertainment by the Triple A Aerobic Academy starting from 1.30pm at Picton Street. Howick Santa Parade organiser Emma Smith, who has been working frantically on the event for several weeks, says she can’t wait to see everyone flock to Howick and enjoy this fantastic community event in the true spirit of Christmas.”Every year the parade grows in size and the amount of spectators does too. It just goes to show what a wonderful part of Auckland we live in.” For more information visit www. howicksantaparade.co.nz

Students feed homeless this Christmas

O

rmiston Primary School students have a plan to help the homeless this Christmas. If the efforts of three Ormiston Primary School students are anything to go by, the homeless in Manukau will be receiving more than just loose change for Christmas this year. Students Seraya Wells (eight), Kim Lim (nine) and Annia Ramirez (10) have started a food can drive for the homeless, with the goal of collecting 500 cans by Christmas. They’ve decorated the school with posters, told their friends what’s happening, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of cans from their peers, to be distributed by Salvation Army at the end of the project. “We’re up to the part where we’re starting to collect cans,” says Ms Lim, “and there will definitely be a prize for whoever has the most - we’re just not sure what that is yet!” Ms Wells says one of her favourite things about Christmas is the opportunity to help people and give a gift to somebody in need – something all three of the girls are putting into action this festive season. Learning coach Kyle Hattie says he is proud of the girls for their initiative, and hopes to see more projects like this come out of the school’s iExplore programme. iExplore is one of three learning blocks at Ormiston Primary School, giving

Times photo Laura Brookes. students designated time to create, plan and implement a project of their choice. Mr Hattie says the girls aren’t the only ones who have successfully put their project into practice. Eight-year-old Ronav Naicker wanted a place to ride his bike, so he used his time in iExplore to design a bike track for the school. The year three student was given

approval to implement his project after making a presentation to the school’s Board of Trustees, and has contracted the Bike On New Zealand Charitable Trust to make the project a reality as part of its national Bikes in Schools programme. Mr Hattie says there is currently no timeframe on the project, but confirmed the school has given it the go-ahead and will see it through.

Champion paralympians are winners They’re proven champions in the competitive and fierce world of international sport. And now our Paralympians are also winners in the eyes of countless of families and kiddies after leading Sunday’s Farmers Santa Parade through Auckland’s CBD to celebrate the city’s festive season. This year’s parade – Auckland’s 83rd – was led by five of our champion Paralympians seated proudly on the all-new Riothemed Paralympics float at the head of the cavalcade. Javelin silver medallist Holly Robinson – who carried the New Zealand flag in Rio – was joined by teammates Nikita Howarth, Rebecca Dubber, Laura Thompson and Jesse Reynolds as the official Grand Marshals for this year’s parade. Tens of thousands of excited parade-goers welcomed both them and Santa to Auckland as the 1.9-kilometre-long event wound its way through the city’s CBD. In addition to the stellar sporting connection, cultural diversity was a huge theme in 2016. Brazilian dancers brought their own rays of sunshine following this year’s highly successful Paralympics in Rio. ➤➤Turn to page 7

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Auckland Girls’ Choir has them all Joy to the World, Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, I’ll be Home for Christmas were some of the Christmas carols that the Auckland Girls’ Choir performed at the Botany Town Centre on the weekend.

The choir conducted by Leonie Lawson and invited to Botany by Becca de la Vega, entertained the shoppers and promised to be back next year. The choir was raising funds for Times photos Farida Masters Red Cross Earthquake Relief.

Whether you’re at home, at out at friends’ or family’s house or at the beach, there are lots of fun Christmas games you can play that won’t cost you a cent. Photo supplied

Holiday fun with some friendly competition

W

hen it comes to entertaining the guests at your holiday party, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the classics — Pictionary, charades and the like are fun and easy to play. However, if you want to try something new this year, here are some ideas to mix things up.

LONE STAR BOTANY

Musical bingo Make bingo cards, but replace the word “bingo” with “piano” and write down the titles of Christmas carols instead of numbers. When a song that’s on your card gets drawn, you have to sing it (stick to one verse and one chorus, if you prefer) to be able to place a chip on that square in hopes of getting a “piano”. Is the song on more than one card? May the best performance win!

OPEN 7 days serving lunch from 12pm

Guess my resolution Have everyone anonymously write down one

of their New Year’s resolutions, and then try to match each one with its author. Whoever has the most correct guesses is the winner. You can also play this game with famous quotes or expressions, as chosen by your guests.

Logos Print out a variety of corporate logos — making sure to mask any visible company names — and ask players to match each one with the business it represents. You can also play this game with slogans instead of logos.

Fun for everyone Organise a three-legged race in the back yard. Have a contest to build the world’s most beautiful snowman (with toilet paper) or tallest Christmas tree (with humans). Fill an oversized Christmas stocking with different items and take turns trying to guess the contents. Fun times guaranteed!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Five tips to avoid weight gain this holiday season

D

oes your scale make you feel guilty after each holiday season? Break the cycle this year and maintain your figure - without sacrificing any fun - by following these five tips. 1. Don’t skip meals. Avoid skipping lunch in preparation for a gargantuan dinner. If you’re starving before the party even begins, you’re more likely to over-indulge.

2. Don’t deprive yourself (too much). Saying no to all of your favourite foods will only lead you to overdoing things later on. Instead, make moderation your mantra and try to eat healthy between parties. 3. Drink in moderation. Even if you’re not driving, try to limit your alcohol consumption. In addition to being highcalorie, alcoholic beverages can also stimulate your appetite.

Paralympian champs ➤➤From page 5

5. Eat slowly. Join the conversation around the dinner table. If you’re busy chatting,

you’ll eat more slowly, allowing you to pick up on the signals your body sends once you’ve had enough to eat. If you’re in charge of hosting, try to prepare a meal that’s just as healthy as it is delicious. You should also avoid cooking industrial amounts of food; the inevitable leftovers will only lead to more excess. Finally, keep in mind that exercise is a vital part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

Indonesian and Japanese entries mix with the mandatory festive season exhibits and there were entries that shone a light on Bollywood. This year’s charity of choice The Salvation Army was also a feature with their brass bands entertaining the crowds while others worked hard to collect funds which will be used to provide much needed support for families during the challenging Christmas period. In her 28th year running the event, Farmers Santa Parade organiser Pam Glaser says, ”this year has been a real mix

of contemporary characters and traditional favourites. It’s not only celebrated the festive season but the cultural diversity of Auckland city as a whole and I’m so proud of how it’s all come together.” “Certainly our Paralympic athletes were a big hit with the crowd,” Pam says. “The Rio float looked stunning with its bold colours and dancers alongside. Our Paralympians did us proud and it was a huge honour to have them lead the procession. “In terms of the event itself, it was probably our biggest year ever in terms of float variety and amazing pageantry.

4. Think before you load up your plate. Fill at least half of your plate with veggies and carefully study the different dishes you have to choose from for the other half. Turkey is a good, low-fat option—as long as you go easy on the gravy. Try not to fill up on appetisers, which are often high in calories.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

‘Neonatal Secret Santa’ launched

T

he Neonatal Trust is looking to provide a special package to the families with a baby in a neonatal unit on Christmas Day. Christmas day is a day for families to get together, be together and make memories. While neonatal families would much rather have their precious baby (or babies, in the case of multiples) at home on this special day, they are in the very best place possible for their care. Justine Brooker, operations executive from The Neonatal Trust said: “We want to provide a Christmas package to each and every family with a baby in a neonatal unit to brighten their day” “Through buying in bulk and also with the generous support of some partner organisations we are looking to provide a special pack to families. “However, there are some costs to cover including distribution around the country, packaging, and more.” “We’d love some support to make this happen, and have set up a special donation page where people can contribute to this initiative and also leave a personal

note that will be hand-written into a card to go with the pack” “Key dates like Christmas Day, Mothers Day and Fathers Day can be particularly tough for families with a baby in hospital. Many who have experienced this directly will understand the emotions and juggle and will look to support others in this situation”. Those wanting to learn more and/or support can do so by visiting www.neonataltrust.org.nz/ secret-santa

Key statistics: ✦ There are 355 incubators and cots in neonatal units across New

Gift ideas for baby’s first Christmas

Zealand ? If the averages play true, there will be 16 babies born premature in New Zealand on Christmas Day. ✦ Babies are classified as premature if they are born before 37 weeks gestation. A normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. ✦ Approximately 1 in 10 of babies born in New Zealand every year arrive early. That’s one every 90 minutes, and over 5000 in total. Many arrive very early – some as early as 16 weeks early (24 weeks gestation). ✦ Some stays in a neonatal unit last just a few days, others take a very long time. For example, from the personal stories on The Neonatal Trust website www. neonataltrust.org.nz

✦ Charlotte, born 23 weeks 3 days, weighing 650grams - 132 days before going home for the first time. ✦ Samuel, born 23 weeks 3 days, weighing 668 grams - 116 days before going home for the first time. ✦ Elias, born 24 weeks 5 days, weighing 890 grams (2lb) - 123 days before going home for the first time.

Baby’s first Christmas is a magical event, and one that’s sure to be immortalised with photos and videos galore. That being said, this moment usually poses its own set of challenges— namely, what do you give a baby who has already been spoiled so much since birth? The good news is that your baby is way too young to care about the contents of the shiny boxes under the tree. In other words, practical gifts are just fine. Think of any equipment you haven’t bought yet that you might still need, such as a folding playpen, a high chair or a food processor. You could also go with colourful, playful bins to store the countless toys you’ll undoubtedly start collecting soon. Christmas is also the perfect occasion to splurge on the beautiful decorative items and high-end plush toys that you wouldn’t normally purchase. When it comes to toys,

look for products designed with your child’s age in mind, or things that he or she will be able to enjoy in a few months. As the case may be, rattles, stacking blocks, bath toys, plastic books, wooden puzzles and activity mats are ideal. For young walkers in training, toys to push and pull around are great. Finally, if numerous loved ones insist on getting a gift, why not suggest that they pool together their resources for something special like a professional photo shoot for the baby? That way, you’ll avoid finding yourself with 32 pairs of red and white pyjamas.

Trolleys to be piled high for those in need this Christmas

C

ountdown and The Salvation Army have teamed up again to make Christmas a little brighter for Kiwi families in need, by providing vital food assistance as part of the Christmas Food Rescue Appeal. Countdown is encouraging shoppers to make a food donation in-store in specially marked Christmas Food Rescue trolleys, or online. Last year more than 750 trolleys full of customer donations were handed over to The Salvation Army before Christmas. In addition, all 183 Countdown stores each donate $500 of groceries to their local Salvation Army centre, contributing more than $90,000 of groceries to The Salvation Army’s food banks nationally. This year people can also donate online at New Zealand’s first online food bank, The Foodbank Project www.foodbank.org. nz. One year on from launching, more than 50,000 grocery items have been donated via the site and distribution has expanded from an Auckland trial to eight hubs around New Zealand. The Salvation Army’s National Secretary for Social Services, Major Pamela Waugh, says around 17,000 families are expected to ask for food assistance by the end of the Christmas season in December. She says a range of factors including the dairy downturn, debt levels, the rising cost of housing, and now the recent earthquakes contribute to Kiwis

being in financial difficulty, particularly during the Christmas period. “Christmas is an incredibly tough time for those families and individuals struggling to make ends meet, let alone celebrate. “Thousands of people who are only just getting by come to us for assistance simply to feed their families at Christmas. A hamper with pantry staples, meat, fruit and some festive treats not only helps these families survive, but also helps them to celebrate Christmas and hopefully get some joy from the festive season,” she says. James Walker, Countdown’s general manager corporate affairs, says the Christmas Food Rescue Appeal is a way for Countdown’s 183 supermarkets to help people in their local communities who are doing it tough. “Every person should be able to celebrate Christmas. Our Countdown stores are a big part of local communities around the country and we’re proud to play a role in making Christmas a reality for many families,” he says. “Every little bit makes a huge difference collectively, which is why we’re asking New Zealanders who can, to add a little extra to their grocery shopping and donate it into the specially-marked trolleys at their local Countdown, or donate online at The Foodbank Project,” says James Walker. This year trolleys will play a bigger role in the Christmas Food Rescue Appeal than

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Fancy an island to yourself for Christmas?

K

iwi super-mum entrepreneurs and camping enthusiasts Liz Henderson and Sonia Minaar know only too well what Christmas can be like – especially when the family wants to go camping. Which is why they started Canopy Camping – New Zealand’s glamour camping site offering off-the-grid ‘glamour camping’ experiences around the country – delivering all the wonders of camping in nature and none of the hassle! “We both love camping and but at this time of year, as all mothers know, it is always such a huge chore packing and organising food and bedding and then unpacking it all at the site – it’s enormous.” “With all our glamour camping you can turn up in beautiful New Zealand wilderness and your luxury tent or accommodation is all laid on with beds, blankets, food and comfort – in some cases you’ve even got ensuites. “It’s the ultimate off-the-grid digital detox experience without any effort.” At this time of year, the glamping sites book up rapidly which is why Liz and Sonia are offering Xmas glamping vouchers. And there are some special sites including a shrub covered Hobbit home in the Waikato, a retro caravan in Nelson, an exclusive Kapiti Island glamp and the vast

Slipper Island off the Coromandel has been added to the glamping list. open ocean hill-top tents in the Wairarapa - and an extra special new addition, a private island retreat. “We’ve just added Slipper Island to our selection, it’s a small, private island, just three kilometres to the east of the Coromandel Peninsula and easily accessed via a short, 15 minute water taxi ride from Tairua or Pauanui. “It’s a taste of a kiwi island paradise with

two room luxury tents just a few steps from a beautiful, white sand beach with sensational views over the ocean.” If you’re stuck for a gift idea – a glamping voucher is not going to disappoint. The sites Liz and Sonia offer at www. Canopycamping.co.nz cover the country, are exclusive to their site and each location offers a unique experience.

‘I’m walking the South Island’

Snapshots

■■By Kelly Teed

W

hile students up and down the country are planning to relax and unwind over the summer holidays, 21-year-old Luke Johnson is preparing to walk the length of the South Island. The former Macleans College Student is walking the 13,000km South Island portion of the Te Araroa Trail to raise awareness and money for the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation. Luke’s passion began as a student of Snell whanau house at high school where he was involved with supporting the Halberg Foundation. He said it was while he was helping out with a Special Olympics Day for kids with disabilities that he started to think about what else he could do to help. “I remember seeing all those kids from those sports days having a blast and it made me think about all those sports days we took for granted,” he said. “I thought, what’s the biggest thing I can do in the time period I have, [and] I thought why not walk the South Island?” Luke expects to be walking for around 60 days, beginning the trek in early December after he

finishes his University of Otago exams where he is currently in his third year of studying land surveying. He has so far raised more than $1000 on his Givealittle page but hopes to raise as much as possible. “I’d be really stoked with $2000 – I know this trip will end up costing me a bit less than that so if I could raise more than that, that would be awesome.” The Te Araroa Trail stretches from Cape Reinga in the

north to Bluff in the south, however due to the length of university holidays, Luke only has time to complete the South Island portion this time around. However, he plans to complete the North Island portion of the track when he has more time. The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is a charitable organisation that aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation.

Awards

Celebrating women in volunteer sector T

hey are zesty and zealous women living the mission statement of Zonta International which is to empower women through service and advocacy. The Zonta Club of East Auckland Annual Awards evening that celebrates women’s achievement was hosted by Chris and Tony Bull and held recently at the Lounge in Howick. The guest speaker of the evening was Ranjna Patel winner of several national awards and co-founder of the East Tamaki Healthcare. Students Susana Jones of Howick College and Sara Khatau of Macleans College walked away with the Leadership award; while Umbar Sandhu from Howick College was a recipient of the Young Woman in Public Affairs Award. The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a commitment to the volunteer sector. Umbar more than met the criteria of volunteer leadership achievements and dedication to the advancement of status of women.

A big pool of amazing talent More than 220 of Auckland’s brightest young stars, aged seven to 21, will take to the stage in December to present the Lloyd-Webber/ Rice timeless classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in a strictly limited season of four school matinee shows and three public performances. All National Youth Theatre Company (NYTC) productions are triple-cast to showcase the very best and this year’s lead role of Joseph is played by Kynan Robinson (19), Takerei Komene (17) and Cole Johnston (19). Directed by Jonathan Alver (Royal Shakespeare Company, NZ Opera, Shortland Street) musically directed by James Doy (NZ Musician of the Year 2014) the talented cast includes emerging talent discovered through NYTC’s Outreach Programme. The programme provides scholarships to singers, dancers and actors, giving them an opportunity to participate in an NYTC production. NYTC is a charitable trust providing a springboard for young performers to learn and thrive. It helps developing not only outstanding performance skills but also life skills. The company has become the premiere development ground for young stars in New Zealand with alumni working both nationally and internationally in musical theatre, opera, television and films— including graduates currently starring in School of Rock in London, and locally in Billy Elliot and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’s public performances run on December 9-10 with tickets available now from Ticketmaster: www. ticketmaster.co.nz/NYTC-tickets/artist/2157055.

OPINION

Barrett shows his class O

nce again the magic of Beauden Barrett has provided the Midas touch to yet another exciting All Blacks victory following Sunday’s hard-fought 24-19 rugby result in Paris. It was the amazing Barrett from deep in his own territory who produced the cross-kick for Julian Savea to gather with a fingertip catch and send Israel Dagg racing for his 10th try of the season. And it was he who made the audacious interception and sprinted 90 m for the second try under the posts just when the French looked set to score. Barrett’s individual brilliance and a magnificent team defence earned a narrow victory against a French team that displayed both courage and attacking flair. But just as in Chicago and Dublin against Ireland, the All Blacks were outclassed at the breakdown. That is something coach Steve Hansen will be seriously concerned about leading up to next year’s tour of the British and Irish Lions after recent events have shown the Four Nations forwards are harder and tougher than their southern hemisphere counterparts. Claims that the All Blacks were in a class of their own after thrashing Australia, South Africa and Argentina have been proved groundless following the hard-fought battles

TIMES

ew’s AgnANGLE

against Ireland and France. The difference between a historic loss to the Irish in Chicago and a win in Dublin was the return of champion locks Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock. But even then Ireland won the breakdowns convincingly, as did France in Paris. They did so because they arrived en masse with lower body positions and struck with greater force and accuracy. Add the best of British and the Lions forwards should be that much tougher in 2017. Tough as Ireland and France have been, Hansen won’t have forgotten that it is Eddie Jones’ England who are the Six Nations champions and have risen to world No 2 behind New Zealand. England will want to confirm that this weekend by hammering Australia following the Wallabies narrow win against Scotland and loss to Wales. With Ireland and Italy having beaten the worst South African

team in memory, only the All Blacks have managed to carry the southern hemisphere banner with pride. Now they can enjoy a much needed summer rest and reflect on a successful season which produced a strong team effort, exciting stars Barrett, Dane Coles, Ben Smith and Israel Dagg and gifted newcomer Anton Lienert-Brown. Physically it has been a long, tough year, especially for the forwards, and Kieran Read’s attacking game has suffered as a consequence. But having taken over Richie McCaw’s captaincy role, he has led well, been masterly in aerial combat and has defended strongly. Read remains a national treasure. But fewer games in a season are required if he and some of his team-mates are going to be in peak condition to successfully face the challenge the Lions will present. Meanwhile it was heartening to see Tim Southee and Ross Taylor return to form in the second cricket test against Pakistan at Hamilton where the bowler took six first innings wickets and the batsman scored his 16th test century, one short of Martin Crowe’s NZ record. Good, too, to see Tom Latham score 80 and fellow opener Jeet Raval notch his second half-century in as many tests. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Players from all Auckland and Counties Manukau clubs, as well as some from as far away as Tauranga and Northland, took part in the competition. It was an especially successful event for Pakuranga Croquet Club, with Kurt Warn winning the premier division, Matthew Chen winning the intermediate division and Jeff Sunderland finishing runner up in the junior division.

Another gold medal for Brazilian jiu-jitsu star F

or the second year in a row, local Brazilian jiujitsu star Brandon Meyer has returned home from the Pan Pacific Kids Brazilian JiuJitsu Championships with a gold medal. After months of hard training, the 12-year-old travelled to Melbourne last month to compete in the biggest Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) competition in Australasia. Of the 200 competitors at the event, Brandon – competing in the 40-44kg, white to range belt – was one of only two Kiwis to win a division. The Year Seven student from Farm Cove Intermediate came out on top after three difficult four minute matches, including one against his Kiwi training partner Corban Glew, who picked up a bronze medal. “In each match my goal was to get my opponent to the ground, pass his legs, hold him down and submit him,” Brandon said, reflecting on

his winning performance and second Pan Pac title. For the first time ever, the Pan Pacific Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships was rated as an international event. Brandon attributes a lot of his success to his coach and

newly-promoted black belt, Van Robertson, and his regular training partner Corban Glew, as well as his fellow fighters at the Auckland MMA gym in Pakuranga. He was recently promoted to a higher belt and aims to compete at the 2017 Kids

World BJJ Championships in the United States. The next 12 months will be dedicated to training and fundraising as Brandon strives to meet this goal, and he hopes to secure some sponsorship to help get him there.
