MAGPIE LOOKOUT
Children attacked by Magpies ■ BY MARIANNE KELLY
T
he spring nesting season habit of magpie swooping has hit Howick Domain over the past few weeks and four-yearold William Gray has the lacerations to prove it. William and his mother Gemma are among the regulars at the domain playground on the corner of Moore and Howe Streets. They’ve noticed the aggressive behaviour of the magpies. But when William moved onto the grassed area one magpie swooped in resulting in lacerations close to his eye. “He’s fine and the scratches will heal,” Mrs Gray says. “But it’s as if the birds have claimed the entire Howick Domain with their patrolling. They are terrorizing young families. “It’s a shame because we live in a townhouse and for my kids this is like their backyard.” The Times arranged to meet Mrs Gray and William at the Domain and within minutes of William setting off to the play area he was again swooped on. It gives credence to the advice not to be surprised if a bird comes back for another attack. Australian magpies have an incredible memory and will attack the same people again and again. At the same time three-year-old
William Gray, left, and Patrick Saunders, have been victims of a territorial magpie in Howick Domain.
Patrick Saunders was dive-bombed by a bird as he ventured onto the Domain’s playing fields. Auckland Council has erected a temporary sign saying: “Please

The Dussehra festival celebrates the Hindu god Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil. According to Ramayana, an epic of ancient India, Lord Rama won over the lovely Sita for his wife, only to have her kidnapped by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. fledge at about four-five weeks at which time the adult magpies will stop defending (and dive-bombing) their territory as aggressively. Some magpies can breed as late as December, but this is by far the minority, he says.
➤➤The blackand-white Australian magpie was introduced to New Zealand from Australia by Acclimatisation Societies between 1864 and 1874, mainly to control insect pests. It starts nest-building in late July and the chicks are fed for four-five weeks until fledgling. The council’s website offers some tips for people to withstand the six-week swooping season and it involves people managing their own behaviour rather than that of the birds. Don’t throw things at a
nest, don’t climb trees where magpie chicks are nesting and don’t provoke adult magpies. They are fiercely family protective and will react if they feel their chicks are threatened. Evasive action involves keeping calm. Don’t yell, flap your arms about or run off screaming. Teach your children to keep calm too. Walk quickly, but do not run. If you are worried put your arms up to protect your head and eyes. If you maintain eye contact with the magpie for as long as possible, it will be less likely to swoop.

There will be plenty of food stalls, fun rides for kids with a bouncy castle, and the burning of the effigy of Ravana, the mythological evil king who was defeated by the righteous king Rama on Dussehra. Devotional songs followed by the fun garba/dandiya dance and a display of fireworks, makes it an event worth attending.

Making the cut on the world stage Celebrating the Indian festival of Navratri in all its rich splendour and colour. Photo supplied
festival
Let’s do the Garba dance As the countdown to Diwali, the biggest Hindu festival begins, the Indian community across the world will be celebrating the festival of Navratri (meaning nine nights in Sanskrit). Traditionally, the nine-day festival honours nine different forms of the Indian goddess Durga and is marked by special rituals and festivity. And then there is lots of dancing. Imagine hundreds of brightlydressed dancers swirling in unison around the colourful statue of a beautiful Indian goddess, as they dance to the beat of the Indian drum called a dhol. Goddess Durga, the destroyer of all evil is worshipped as celebrants energetically dance in concentric circles, a sight to behold. In Raas, another dance associated with Navratri, participants strike sticks together to tap out a rhythm. The sticks represent the swords of Goddess Durga. Navratri not only symbolises the victory of good over evil but
also celebrates the spirit of Indian culture in its togetherness. Devotees, celebrate the festival by offering prayers to the Goddess, wearing traditional Indian outfits, singing folk songs and participating in fun activities like doing the Garba and Dandiya dance. The Art of Living Foundation, New Zealand is celebrating the festival on October 7 and 8 at the Howick Leisure Centre, 563 Pakuranga Road, Pakuranga from 7pm onwards. It is a free event and all are welcome. There are attractive prizes for best dressed male and female, food stalls, and lots of goodies. lutching a special oyster knife, Joe Kalasimi couldn’t believe he was competing at the world stage as international champions fiercely battled for the title of World Oyster Opening Championship at the 62nd annual Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in Ireland. A little nervous to be in the midst of skilled oyster shucking champions, the simple Samoan, an employee of Clevedon Coast Oysters, realised he was not used to working with Bluff oysters. Joe who has just returned from an all-expenses-paid trip to the Japan Oyster Opening Championships followed by a trip to compete at the world’s biggest oyster event in Ireland says: “This was my first time at the world championship and the oysters were very different. We work with Pacific oysters at Clevedon Coast Oysters. Bluff oysters have harder shells, are flat and are very different to open. But we had very good oyster shucking knives with a

Blown away by an experience of a lifetime, the local Samoan laughs saying he is back working with his mates, doing what he loves best – shucking oysters.

rare opening in one of Auckland’s most coveted locations is about to make its mark on the business community. Built on a sprawling 1.25 hectare site, 417 East Tamaki Business Park is a brand new development in the heart of East Auckland’s industrial precinct. Featuring 25 solid concrete units of various sizes, this highly sought after space is set to attract investors, small to medium sized owner occupiers and tenants. Developed by the family-owned National Asset Group, the business complex at 417 East Tamaki Road is in good hands. Director Greg Large says it was a matter of seizing the opportunity to create a freehold offering in a predominantly lease-only market within the densely built East Tamaki area. “In this location it is rare to come across a vacant piece of land in a light industrial zone of this size, so we saw a gap in the market to create brand new light industrial units.” As major transport investment from the Government continues to pour into the East West Connections project, the location has never looked better. “It’s close to a strong residential catchment and boasts easy links to main arterial routes of Te Irirangi and Highbrook Drives. “It’s a truly unique opportunity within the East Tamaki corridor,” says Greg. Boasting easy access in a modern, secure and gated compound, all units come with high roller doors, ample parking, and a dedicated devanning area for ease of loading and unloading containers and trucks. Greg says demand has been overwhelming.

“We sold out Stage 1 (more than 50% of the units) within a month before even putting a shovel in the ground.” With rents rising and interest rates at an all-time low, now is the time to act to secure this limited opportunity, says Greg. “The cost of land and construction is increasing, and chances such as these are diminishing day by day.” Only four units are being released in Stage 2. Plans have been approved, consents have been granted and earthworks have begun, with the project slated for completion midlate 2017. Established for more than 20 years, National Asset Group
will bring this latest venture to its portfolio of successful achievements which include residential and commercial developments across Auckland. The group was founded in the 1990s by Greg and his father, Terry, who comes from a background working with some of the nation’s most respected developers. Having served many local owner operators, the company is welltuned to the needs of its target audience. “We’ve designed it with small to medium businesses in mind. Locals who want to work closer to home will find this a very attractive proposition,” says Greg. “There’s a huge shortage of
this product for small to medium sized business owners looking for freehold ownership opportunities.” Investors, too, set to gain from this clean, open space with low vacancy rates across the district. “The demand for quality premises is outstripping supply and the strong competition from neighbouring units put landlords in a strong position to reap the rewards of rental growth over a number of years.” Close to the suburban beaches of Howick, Bucklands Beach and Half Moon Bay, the units also support recreational lifestyles and hobbyists, creating a home for motorhomes, boats and classic vehicles. In line with a family-friendly
lifestyle, a large, purpose-built childcare centre has taken up the flagship approximate 3000m2 site fronting the development. Business is booming in this quarter, and just a glance at neighbouring firms from local outfits to multinational corporations will confirm that East Tamaki is the place to be. “The opportunities are endless,” says Greg. “We foresee a great future for prospective buyers and tenants and will work hard to deliver and exceed their expectations.” To join an elite group of discerning buyers who have staked their claim in 417 East Tamaki Business Park or take a tour through this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, call: Bayleys Mike Mainkovich, 021 779 117 Marty Roestenburg, 021 943 517 Knight Frank Michelle Kennard, 021 162 5063 Josh Franklin, 021 990 174

POWER TALK
INNOVATION
ESPcat takes shape Hidden away in the muddy estuary that is the Whitford Creek; an unusual boat is taking shape. ESPcat is the brainchild of inventor and long-time Howick resident, John Caldwell. Caldwell’s plan is to change the world or at least the world of boats. He says ESPcat (Electric Solar Powered Catamaran) will be New Zealand’s first practical coastal cruiser powered entirely by the sun. ESPcat is the prototype for a new generation of solar powered, electric boats. The floating classroom will teach young and old about marine ecology from a “silent, non-polluting platform”. The catamaran Borderline started out life as a successful racing sailboat. Next came a short stint as a motorboat and now she is
being fitted with a new cabin that is designed to accommodate a 4000 watt solar array. The cabin sides and roof will be fitted within the next few weeks. Then comes 300kg of lithium-ion batteries and finally the petrol outboards will be replaced with electric outboards. ESPcat is a project of the Caldwell family with plans to host educational outings at no charge. A private company (ESPcat Ltd) has been set up to commercialise the intellectual property associated with solar electric marine propulsion systems. Caldwell is a semi-retired electronics engineer with dual US and New Zealand citizenship. He and his wife Gallagher - a professional librarian - have been resident in Howick for 39 years.
Tourism growth for New Zealand T
ourism is big business in New Zealand and winter 2016 has seen record numbers of visitors spending the most they ever have throughout the country. Every region showed an increase in visitor spending over the last year with Auckland growing by 7 per cent to $6.7 billion. To have sustained such strong growth into and throughout the winter months is confirmation that New Zealand can be a successful holiday destination all year round. Statistics New Zealand recently reported that in the 12 months until the end of August 2016, visitor arrivals in New Zealand reached a new all-time record of 3.36 million – that’s up a significant 11 per cent compared with the year to August 2015. This increase was particularly driven by visitor arrivals from
countries such as China, Australia, the United States and Malaysia. Visitor arrivals are forecast to grow by 5.4 per cent a year to reach 4.5 million visitors in 2022, up from 3.1 million in 2015. This is good news for local businesses and the economy as a whole. However, whilst it is a positive that more people are coming here to visit, it is also important to provide funding and infrastructure to help support communities maximise their tourism growth potential. Within the Government, John Key has taken on the role of Minister of Tourism himself – that’s how important he views tourism for our economic future. He recently announced that the Government will invest $20 million over four years to further support tourism across New Zealand. He also stated that the

Counselling service resumes
Dining for Hospice Big-hearted celebrities are coming to the table to raise cash for South Auckland’s Totara Hospice. Totara is the lowest funded specialist hospice per capita in New Zealand, covering 525,000 people, and it needs more money to continue to provide its services free of charge to families and support dying with dignity. Now in its fourth year, the Long Lunch event is unique as each table has its own celebrity guest. Nadia Lim (My Food Bag); comedians Jon Bridges, Jeremy Elwood and Josh Thompson, and All Black Anthony Boric are confirmed, along with high profile chefs Ben Barton and Sam Mannering in the kitchen and funny woman Michele A’Court on MC duties. Totara Hospice receives just 60 per cent of its funding from the Government, leaving a shortfall of $3 million each year, just to meet operational costs. Aside from raising much-needed funds, Hospice spokesperson
Melinda Seal says the event is a great way to raise awareness about Hospice services while demystifying and exposing the public to the work it does. “Everyone involved is volunteering their time. The youth involved don’t have the money but they have time to give and everyone involved is passionate about that and committed to the work of hospice. “The Long Lunch is a way for Totara Hospice to connect with the community in which we operate,” she says. “We need to raise money, but we want to give people an experience they remember while raising money, an experience that connects them to the Hospice.” ➤➤Showcasing the flavours of Italy, the lunch will be held at 12.15-5pm on October 16, The Bluestone Room, Durham Lane, Auckland Central. Tickets are $155 and available online at www.hospicelonglunch.co.nz.

Everyone has an implied right to enter your property and knock on your door touting goods for sale, offering to trim your trees, paint your roof and other services which you may not require. In fact you may prefer to get the work, if necessary, done by a more reputable source. A number of these door knockers are insistent and pushy people and their sales pitch may last a long time before you can get them to leave. In the worst-case scenario, you may agree to accept either the goods or services they are offering or selling just to get rid of them. One of the ways to deter them from even knocking is to put up a ‘do not knock’ sticker on either the front door or a gate leading into your property. If they ignore this sticker, which can be picked up from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), they are likely to be trespassing. If so, you can give them a
verbal warning as there is no legal requirement to give them a trespass notice in writing and then inform them that you will call the police if they do not go. Consumer NZ says everybody has an implied licence to enter your property and knock on your door. But you have the right to take away this licence. You can revoke a salesperson’s licence to enter your property by displaying a ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. If a door-to-door seller ignores the sticker, they’re likely to be trespassing. CAB Pakuranga advises people to be aware that some doorto-door sellers use the ruse of telephone marketing to try to persuade you to make an appointment so you can inspect the product they are selling. Often they will use the lure of a free gift or by merely having a glib tongue. You have the right to refuse. However, if you do buy goods or services and the value is more
than $100 you have the right to cancel the deal for any reason. The seller must tell you so verbally and in writing. You can then cancel the goods or services within five working days of receiving the written agreement. Establish a paper trail recording details, noting the dates of the visits and the transactions. CAB has a team of volunteers who can provide further clarification on door-knocking and other things which may be causing concern . Call in and collect your ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. ➤➤Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear food court entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271-5382 or 0800-267222 for free, confidential and informative help.

A friendly dental centre with extended hours
With Dr Zhuo being fluent in Mandarin, the team at Kilimanjaro Dental Centre can communicate in over 10 languages.. Together with registered specialist orthodontist, Dr Prashant Zaveri, the team covers comprehensive services from general dentistry to orthodontics. Michael adds saying that another big plus is “Anita is very good with children. We have a very supportive environment at the practice.” The centre is ACC registered and WINZ quotes are given as well. Kilimanjaro Dental Centre is contracted to the Ministry of Health to provide free dental care for adolescents up to the age of 18. The centre also provides free dental care to patients referred by the Auckland Regional Dental Services – the community or school dental clinics. The big plus about the dental centre is that it is a family practice located in a great neighbourhood with plenty of parking. “With the same people looking after you over the last 13 years there is a sense of comfort and you don’t have to tell your history. We know it,” says Dr Zaveri. A word of advice from Dr Zhou is don’t put off your visit to the dentist for later. “Treat the problem in its initial stage to save you more pain and money,” he urges.

Taking the day off to go to the dentist, can be a pain. There are not many dental practices that offer the convenience of flexible hours. Patients now have the option to enjoy extended hours at Kilimanjaro Dental Centre located at Kilimanjaro Drive, Northpark, thanks to a very capable and professional new addition to the team, Dr Michael Zhuo. Qualified from the University of Otago in 2012, Dr Zhuo has worked both in Auckland and in Thames. Having attending to farmers, office workers and stay-at-home mums, Dr Zhuo has worked with a wide range of patients, fitted into the role very easily at the Kilimanjaro Dental Clinic. The friendly, young dentist who puts patients at instant ease took on a lot of responsibility from day one, says long time owner of the clinic Dr Anita Zaveri who had to fly to the US almost immediately after Dr Zhuo joined the practice. “We share the same mindset and working philosophy,” she smiles saying. Michael who is full time with the dental centre, also works on Saturdays from 9am4pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays till 7pm, depending on the requirements of the patients or if there is an emergency that needs to be attended to immediately. “This is very convenient for patients who are aware that they can be attended to after hours as well. “He also does Intravenous Sedation (IV) for really nervous patients,” she says.

The Howick RSA was packed with excited people hungry to hear the music hits of Creedance Clearwater Revival last Saturday night. It’s amazing to think that in 2016 locals are still enthusiastic for the huge catalogue of songs made famous by Americans John Fogarty and CCR back in the late 1960s. And, from the first song played by Bad Moon Rising, a mighty fine Kiwi CCR tribute band and appropriately titled, the floor at the Howick RSA was full of dancers. It stayed that way all evening as Bad

Moon Rising delivered an authentic CCR experience, rolling out all the classics, including Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou, Down on the Corner, Suzy Q, Fortunate Son, Green River, Who’ll Stop the Rain and Bad Moon Rising (twice). One of the highlights was when the crowd was encouraged to sing to the rafters the lyrics to Midnight Special, a song originally written back in 1927 by Carl Sandburg. The next big music date at the Howick RSA, Wellington Street, is in late November when a Beatles tribute group comes to town. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

When an owner of Maori land dies it is necessary for the person or persons succeeding to that land, to prove their entitlement or right of succession. To do this they must present their whakapapa to the Maori Land Court. Whakapapa is found throughout the MLC minute books. Accomplished artists celebrate new theatre
Dramatic requiem opens summer
■■By Marianne Kelly
A
n enticing selection of top entertainment will continue the celebration of the newlyrefurbished Uxbridge Theatre. Renovation of the former Presbyterian Church is part of stage two of the $6.4 million redevelopment of the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre in Uxbridge Road, Howick. The festival continues on Friday October 14 with the return of comedian, writer, columnist and television presenter Urzila Carlson. With six sold-out solo seasons at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival behind her, she will be joined on stage with funny man Nick Rado, a multiaward winning presenter, producer, writer and stand-up comedian. The following night, Saturday, New Zealand’s dream team of female vocalists, Lady Killers, including Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch and Jackie Clarke, will take to the Uxbridge stage. The group’s sound crosses genres from pop, R&B, jazz, gospel, country to a whole lotta rock and gleefully namechecking iconic artists such as Queen, The Beatles, Neil Young, Neil Finn and Dolly Parton. The following Thursday, October 20, Miho Wada will present Miho’s Jazz Orchestra which she formed in 2011. It’s been described as one of the most entertaining jazz acts in New Zealand. Miho will bring an energy packed pocket-sized orchestra to Uxbridge
Left, Miho’s Jazz Orchestra will bring a foot-tapping act to Uxbridge; right, Nathan Haines joins his guitarist brother Joel Haines. Photos supplied
with its special brand of uplifting, feettapping tunes mixed with melancholic, romantic melodies. Their unique sound combines Afro-Cuban flute, J-Pop, and stylish contemporary jazz with a pan-Pacific flavour. The festival will close on Friday October 21 with Nathan Haines’ first performance at Uxbridge. He will join guitarist brother Joel Haines for an evening of genre-bending original material with an electrified band featuring Michal Matryniuk on synthesisers and keyboards, Cameron MacArthur on bass and Stephen Thomas on drums. Now based in New Zealand after a 20-year stint in London, Haines is internationally recognised as an innovative artist based in the jazz and soul idioms, with current releases on the UK’s Warner Classics and Jazz labels,
as well as being a regular headline artist at London’s legendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. ➤➤For photographers: Photomarathon will run at 9am-7pm on Saturday October 15. It’s a photography competition with a twist. Participants will have 10 hours to take 10 photographs on 10 given topics. All images will be collated onto a revolving gallery which will be hosted on Facebook and available by October 18. An exhibition will show the work at 5.30-6.30pm on October 20 and will run until November 5. Registrations by phoning 535-6467 or online at www. uxbridge.org.nz. ➤➤Comedy Night with Laughing Club is at 8pm on October 14, cost $25$29; Lady Killers is sold out; Miho’s Jazz Orchestra is at 8pm on October 20, cost $26-$29; Nathan Haines is at 8pm on October 21, cost $30-$35.
One of the most popular and dramatic requiems of all times will be performed in Auckland as summer approaches. Bach Musica NZ will perform the Verdi Requiem. It will boost its chorus to more than 100 with guest singers from the National Youth Choir, the Graduate Choir, other solo professionals and the Hamilton Civic Choir. Its orchestra, enlarged to full symphony orchestra size, will showcase eight trumpets, a bass drum, tuba and piccolo part for effect. The performance will be conducted by Rita Paczian with internationally renowned soloists Morag Atchison (soprano), Catrin Johnsson (mezzo), David Hamilton (tenor) and Joel Amosa (bass). Verdie premiered this obituary for a treasured and admired friend and poet with a modest orchestration of a
120-voices strong chorus and 100 instrumentalists which later, on tour via London’s Albert Hall, expanded to 1200 singers. True to Verdi’s love to stretch the boundaries of classical composition technique as well as political and religious standards, this ‘operaesque’ piece was regarded as rather controversial in its time. However, once the Messa da Requiem found its way to the most prestigious churches as well as playhouses, all doubt vanished and this compositional milestone has proven to be more than just an ode to a friend, but, as George Marek calls it, “a prayer for peace by a man who had devoted his music to conflict”. Bach Musica will perform the Verdi Requiem at 5pm on October 9 at Auckland Town Hall, Upper Queen Street, Central Auckland.

Q: What is the Vampire Face Lift®? A: The Vampire Face Lift® made famous by Hollywood and Kim Kardashian represents the greatest advance in cosmetic medicine this decade. Q: How does it work? A: The Vampire Face Lift®? is a combination of FDA approved Dermal Fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP which the doctor skilfully places into areas of the face to rejuvenate, lift and brighten. Q: Tell me more? A: Dermal Fillers are hyaluronic acids or carbohydrates, we already have this everywhere in our skin, but they diminish with ageing. PRP is naturally occurring, to get we take blood from the arm and centrifuge it, separating out the straw coloured component. The straw coloured fluid is called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP, this PRP has concentrated growth factors that stimulate tissue, blood vessel and nerve growth when injected. When PRP is combined with Dermal Fillers we see new tissue growth that lifts cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionettes, thereby reducing lines and wrinkles, and because there is an increased blood supply, skin texture and colour also improves. Q: Who can do the Vampire Face Lift®? A: This procedure is specific and protected by the US Patent and Trademark office. Only licensed providers such as myself are sanctioned to perform the procedure. Appointments can be made at the Botany Specialist Centre 260 Botany Rd, Botany. New take on timber suits kiwi lifestyle K
Soh & Key Summit
Topics: 4th Term, All Blacks, Helen Clark, Xi Jinping... Read all about it below.
Tulip Qiao

Steve and Nicole Heald own and manage Just Hardwood Floors which has a show room and warehouse in East Tamaki. They are one of a few companies that offer solid timber flooring options, such as traditional tongue and groove or parquet timber flooring. But they have shifted their focus with the trends to prefinished engineered flooring. “People are heading towards engineered timber flooring and laminates,” Nicole says. “They are better suited to the indoor/ outdoor lifestyle and laminates are a more durable surface to live on. “The engineered timber flooring market has really taken off and the demand is huge now. People have a better understanding of what an engineered timber floor is.” Steve trained as a timber flooring installer and went out on his own in business 22 years ago and it was only eight years ago that he came off the tools. These days he’s the hands-on general manager. The van he

started out with has given way to a showroom and warehouse and Steve and his fully-qualified team take special pride in training apprentices. “He’s one of the guys,” Nicole says, “and has been on the tools so he understands the work.” Currently the company is made up of 11 people including seven installation staff who travel nationwide. Not many companies offer solid timber, engineered timber and laminate flooring, Nicole says. Solid wood is a traditional
hard flooring option, she says, but more expensive and some types can be incredibly difficult to source. As a result, their focus has changed to the engineered products. The company now imports its own engineered plank called Euro-PRO which it coats with its own range of polyurethanes and oils from Italy, still allowing for a customised job for each client. Euro-PRO is a 20mm thick plank with a 6mm top layer of oak and a 15mm plywood backing system. The company can pre-coat the flooring at its East Tamaki-based warehouse or do a traditional site finish. “Alot of people still go for a classic look, in the natural warmer tones as they tend not to date,” Nicole says. “But a timber or a laminate floor adds warmth and ambience and suits peoples’ indoor/ outdoor lifestyles.” Just Hardwood Floors has been a regular Times advertiser since the day Steve opened the company doors. The association has provided a solid marketing presence but, Nicole says, times change. As it shifts to a national focus and technology changes, web-sites are becoming the way forward.

Create waterefficient gardens Spring is time to get back into the garden when the temperature is rising and things are bursting back into life. Whether planning a big garden or some potted plants on a window sill, making smart choices when selecting plants and their placement and watering techniques means you can create a garden that thrives in dry weather. Watercare says a ‘waterwise’ garden will have a positive effect on the water bill and offers some simple tips to reduce the garden’s water requirements. ➤➤Plant wisely Many things influence a garden’s water requirements. But an easy way to help reduce the amount of water needed is choice of plants. A local garden centre can help with selection of the right plants for a garden, as well as advise about the best time to plant them. For example, make sure to plant vegetables well before the summer heat so they can establish a deep root system to access moisture deep down in the soil. Tomatoes and squash are especially quick at growing such roots. ➤➤Plants that do well in dry conditions Spring is the best time to re-seed bare patches of lawn. Consider drought-resistant lawn seed mixes that contain varieties of perennial ryegrass and fescues. Be aware that some varieties of grass are designed to dry out and go yellow in summer. They will recover in autumn. It’s also better to let grass grow a little longer in the summer. It will stay greener than a closely-mown lawn and need less watering over dry periods as it strengthens the root system and shades the root zone. Plants that do well in dry conditions include salvia, succulents, clivia, libertia and arthropodium. Factors influencing the need for water in the garden include soil type. Clay soils absorb water slowly but are prone to compaction. Sandy soils do not retain water well, but are easier to work. Some plants require a high volume of water to stay healthy and looking good.
Expose raw materials, pipes and electrical wires for an industrial style. Photo supplied
Update decor with an industrial interior design I
ndustrial style has taken home decor stores, showrooms and retailers by storm in recent years. Characterised by its exposed pipes and bricks, wood and metal surfaces, and vintage furniture, this trend has brought an undeniable touch of flair to homes. The industrial interior design style replicates the utilitarian look of abandoned factories that were eventually converted into unique and creative living spaces. Emphasising the use of materials from yesteryear, this trend incorporates industrial furniture, old hand-painted
Consultations Design Construction Planting
signs, worn couches, brick walls and ferrous metal to define its decor. In addition, building materials are exposed, windowpanes are huge, cement tiles cover both the floors and the walls, and electrical wires are visible—anything to reproduce that raw and unfinished look. Industrial interior design typically lends itself well to living rooms and kitchens. Relax comfortably in an area outfitted with worn leather couches, iron shelving and decorative elements worthy of any respectable second-hand shop. Or prepare meals surrounded by high
metal stools, low-hanging pendant lights and big bay windows. Chances are this style will make its way to the rest of the house, for example finishing the bathroom with exposed brick, or baring the support beams in the bedroom. The nuts and bolts of industrial style is to use the right materials in the design, such as weathered wood, metals like iron, zinc and copper, as well as brick and cement in their most basic form. Lighting is another priority. Be sure to install big windows that let in a lot of natural light as well as glare-free light fixtures.

Pak players chosen for Makos clash Three Pakuranga United rugby players have been picked for Auckland’s important home game against Tasman tonight. With only a couple of weeks left until the Mitre 10 Cup semi-finals, Auckland has a lot on the line against the Makos at Eden Park. Sam Prattley will start at prop and two of his Pakuranga club mates, James Lay and Ben Nee Nee, have been named on the bench. Pakuranga’s Joe Edwards is still unavailable due to injury. Auckland beat Otago 54-17 on Saturday to keep their Mitre 10 Cup dream well and truly alive. Auckland coach Nick White said the win was a big confidence booster for the team. “It was really important that we played well because in reality we hadn’t put a performance out all year. “It just showed when they get the detail right, play to the structure and back themselves, they can play some bloody good footy.” There are only two games left before the semi-finals and White said Auckland need to win tonight’s home game and collect some points to give themselves a chance to make the semis. “Tasman are in the same boat as us, they need to confirm their top four place as well so the match will have a bit of heat in it.” Auckland is currently tied for second on the table with Taranaki – both with 27 points – and Canterbury is leading with 35 points. Counties Manukau (25) and Tasman (22) are not far off the pace. Auckland’s last game before the semi-finals will be against Taranaki in New Plymouth next Thursday. The Auckland v. Tasman game will kick-off at 7.35pm tonight at Eden Park.

Lienert-Brown dazzles S
unday’s 36-17 win against Argentina in Buenos Aires was not a great All Black test but one 21-year-old international rugby rookie Anton Lienert-Brown will never forget. For during it he proved he doesn’t only deserve to be there but could be for many years to come, as either a second-five or centre who runs and tackles well, takes smart options and offloads beautifully. With so many All Black stars withdrawing from international rugby after last year’s World Cup, finding suitable midfield replacements for Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith was always going to be the selectors’ most difficult task. Sonny Bill Williams and Malakai Fekitoa looked the most likely candidates had not SBW opted for the Rio Olympics sevens where he suffered a bad Achilles injury. With Charlie Ngatai making a strong claim with a brilliant Super Ruby campaign for the Chiefs until sidelined with a serious concussion, consistent Ryan Crotty slotted into the second-five berth where he has been better than solid. With George Moala also joining the injured ranks after

a fine game against Wales in the June Dunedin test, Fekitoa became the regular centre. But while he did offer strong defence, he failed to create tries with his pass in the manner of a Conrad Smith. Given his chance on Sunday Lienert-Brown took it magnificently, scoring the first try and assisting in three others to complete an outstanding performance. With Joe Moody and Liam Squire sin-binned and the All Blacks regularly penalised in an atrocious second half, there were few chances for the visitors to maintain their

momentum when dynamic No 8 Facundo Isa led the Pumas brave fight back. Another rookie to impress was 120kg, 23-year-old lock Patrick Tuipulotu who added power to the second row in concert with Brodie Retallick and combined with PJ Perenara to make a bone-crunching, trysaving tackle. The lively, much improved Perenara was another to relish getting a start after playing second fiddle so long to the classy Aaron Smith. Having clinched the title after just four rounds, the All Blacks should complete the Rugby Championship by beating South Africa this coming weekend after Morne Steyn scored all the Boks points in their 18-10 defeat of South Africa. Meanwhile speedy young Auckland centre Rieko Ioane continues to press his claims for an end of year tour of America, Ireland and France, having scored six tries in his last two Mitre 10 games. It was great to see boxer Joseph Parker in such devastating form when demolishing giant heavyweight Alexander Dimitrenko in Manukau on Saturday night although he risked

disqualification for hitting his opponent after he’d already dropped him in the third round. However having shown no heart for the fight after Parker’s speed and power decked him four times, Dimitrenko was lucky his purse was not withdrawn. It was an impressive showing of speed and power by Parker, who has set his sights on a world title fight and is now ranked first in the WBO and IBF rankings behind champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua respectively. At this point with Fury likely to be stripped of his titles, Parker’s promoters’ preference is a December WBO title bout against No 3 ranked Mexican Andy Ruiz in Auckland with Joshua expected to defend his IBF crown against veteran Wladimir Klitschko in London. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

BASEBALL
Baseballers travel to Arizona, USA Four local baseballers are this weekend off to Arizona in the United States, where they will be showcasing their talent in front of hundreds of college and professional scouts. Kyle Anderson (16), Dylan Irwin (19), Elliot Johnstone (18) and Kazuma Nakano (17) will be in the south-western US state for about two weeks taking part in the Arizona Senior and Junior Fall Classics. The New Zealand invitational team is made up of 20 Kiwi ballplayers from around New Zealand and Australia. The Arizona Senior and Junior Fall Classics, created in 1995, are held each year and give mostly North American players the opportunity to demonstrate their ball-playing ability in front of top baseball scouts from across the US in the hope of signing a college or pro contract. The Arizona Classic events also give young players the opportunity to compete against top competition from all over North America, as well as against top players invited from countries around the world.
The events were started by Seattle Mariners international scout Ted Heid and his family. Baseball New Zealand chief executive Ryan Flynn said these young New Zealand baseballers will probably not get a better opportunity to play in front of this number of scouts in their lifetimes. “Opportunities like this tournament don’t come around often so it’s important for these players to prove there is plenty of baseball talent in New Zealand – for themselves and the programme as a whole.” The team’s head coach, Baseball New Zealand development officer Dan Tan, said: “We see American collegiate baseball as a great pathway for our players, and this showcase allows them to play in front of a large number of recruiters at once.” The next two weeks will be nonstop baseball games for the Kiwi athletes and the team will also take on local junior colleges and play against older players who have already been recruited.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Meyer ready for fight L
ocal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu star Brandon Meyer is currently training six to seven times a week as he attempts to defend his Pan Pacific title in Australia next month. The 12-year-old, a year seven student at Farm Cove Intermediate, won the Australasian Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) title for his division at the Pan Pacific Champs in Melbourne last year. He will return to Melbourne at the end of November and attempt to do it all over again. “I’m really lucky to train under amazing coaches who have made me able to go up against other top competitors,” Brandon said. He trains at Auckland MMA in Pakuranga and has been BJJ national champion for his grade for the past two years. Brandon said although he still gets a bit nervous before competing, he enjoys the challenge. “BJJ is all about out-moving the other person. It’s like human chess. It’s great being part of a growing sport.” After the Pan Pacific Champs, Brandon is hoping to pick up sponsorship which will allow him to compete in the 2017 Kids World BJJ Championships in the United States. When he’s not training or competing in BJJ, he is in the wrestling ring. He picked up wrestling to improve his “take-downs” in BJJ and every Friday he travels to a gym in Te Atatu to train. For the last two years, Brandon has been the top wrestler in his division at both North Island and national levels and won the Most Scientific Wrestler Award for 10-13 year olds at this year’s nationals. He will be hoping that all this extra training will bear fruit next month when he faces up in Melbourne.
