inety- one -year- old Marie Morgan is a reluctant retiree, about to give up the reins to her riding school after teaching horse riding to generations of families.

This week marks the end of an era as hundreds of students over the years, have passed through Fairhill Riding School and previous to that Croft House Riding School with Sue Bason.

Used to working 12 hour days, seven days a week on the farm and teaching, Marie happily offers us a ride on her quad bike to view the 7h property at the highest point of Mission Heights.

At one time, the family owned 60 acres of land on Jeffs Rd and rode over much of the surrounding countryside on horseback.

“None of the fancy stuff of taking horses for competitions in horse trailers, we would just ride to them,” laughs Marie who steps out of the barn to have a quick chat.

The last of the riding lessons will be held this Saturday.

The horses will move to a property near daughter Rachel Walsh’s farm in Hunua. Marie, who started riding at the age of three, plans to continue being an equestrian consultant.

On Sunday afternoon, thanks to a Facebook post by Jenny, more than 130 past and present pupils turned up to share their stories of how Marie, who has taught riding and horsemastership for the last 48 years, had changed their lives.

One of them described the camps at Duders Beach as the best childhood memory. Riding bareback and swimming with the horses, followed by music in the evening as Marie played the piano accordion — is something she will never forget.

The physically active and mentally sharp nonagenarian has also been instrumental in introducing the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) movement along with her business partner at the time Sue Bason in the late 1960’s at Ramarama.

This was prior to Ambury Park taking over the RDA movement.

In 1980, Marie and Sue moved the riding school to East Tamaki (now Mission Heights) since the majority of students travelled from the city.

Marie has a great knowledge regarding horse. “Each horse has a personality and you need to know how to work with it. It is not just about riding but everything from your demeanour when you catch a horse, grooming and saddling, mounting and dismounting, learning how to handle an unscheduled dismount and to keep yourself and your horse safe. It’s equally important to learn about caring for the horses

health and wellbeing,” she says.

Marie admits there have been a few difficult horses over the years like the naughty ones that have come to be reschooled. She’s helped sort them out.

“Horses are mammals with a brain. It’s not like riding a bicycle!

A love of horses and music has filled her life. Having passed her Trinity College London Grade 8 music exams in piano and violin, Marie has performed in orchestras and taught music over the years.

Now she is ready to diver-

sify, she says.

“I am going to play the piano and remind my fingers how to behave. I will spend time with my 13 grandchildren. I feel that everyone who learnt through the riding school is part of my extended family. It is time for the Riding School side of my life to be reduced,” says Marie who needed years of convincing from her children to give up the reins.

So how will she cope with the change?

“Oh, I’ll just get on with it, like I’ve done with everything else,” she smiles.

ounties Manukau East Police apprehended two youths after a vehicle stolen from Highland Park was spotted by officers in Howick this morning.

The police Eagle helicopter assisted in the apprehension after the vehicle failed to stop for police and road spikes were deployed to bring the situation to a safe conclusion, Inspector Chris Barry, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau East Police, told the Times.

A 15-year-old has been arrested and will appear in the Manukau Youth Court. A 14-year-old is being dealt with

by Counties Manukau East Police Youth Aid Services. Earlier the same morning Counties Manukau East Police recovered a stolen vehicle that was spotted at a local petrol station.

“Identifying features of the car didn’t match and further examination revealed the true identity of the car which had undergone significant modifications to conceal the fact it had been stolen,” Inspector Barry said.

Enquiries are continuing to identify the offenders responsible for the theft of the vehicle.

During the early hours of Monday (September 9), Counties Manukau East Police spotted another car at a local fast food outlet which turned out to be stolen.

Police followed the car and apprehended the two occupants at a residential address.

A 36-year-old female is appearing at the Manukau District Court charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and a 30-year-old male is appearing on a charge of unlawfully getting into a vehicle.

On Monday afternoon, the owner of a car parked outside a Howick gym saw a group of young males breaking into his car. The males ran off followed by the car owner who immediately phoned police on 111.

Although the owner lost sight of the offenders, police arrived and located one of the suspects and took him into custody.

He has been referred to Counties Manukau East Police Youth Aid Services.

“Police greatly appreciate the assistance of the public in apprehending vehicle crime and burglary offenders and are asking the community to be vigilant.”

He emphasised that many vehicle-related crimes could be prevented if people removed all valuables including wallets and any electronic accessories and locked their cars securely.

“Pre-2005 cars that don’t have an ignition immobiliser should be secured using a steering wheel lock to reduce the risk of it being stolen,” he said.

“These can be purchased at automotive retailers for much less than the cost of an insurance excess or replacing the vehicle’s ignition.”

Meanwhile, Counties Manukau East Police have received several reports of vehicle break-ins around the Howick Village area over recent months.

Police are currently liaising with the council around whether further measures could be taken to reduce vehicle crime in the area, such as installing CCTV cameras.

In general, police find that shopping areas and town centres are often targets for vehicle crime.

“These crimes are opportunistic in nature and can be prevented by vehicle owners taking simple precautionary measures,” Inspector Barry said.

“Always ensure your vehicle is locked and secure.”

Inspector Barry also offered comment following an appar-

ent incident at Muzza’s Pies on Howick Village main street yesterday afternoon. The owners told the Times two teens with faces covered stole pies and drinks before running off while the owners were near the counter.

On Monday a person attempted to steal the charity box there but dropped it on their way out. They had not called police.

“Police urge anyone who is the victim of a crime or who witnesses offending taking place to report it to police immediately by phoning 111,” Inspector Barry said.

“Police are happy to visit store owners who are victims of crime to provide prevention advice and tips around how they can reduce their risk of being targeted by offenders. In general, we also encourage store owners to consider preventative measures such as CCTV cameras.

“Any store owners who have concerns are asked to contact their local police station. If store owners would prefer to speak to an officer in another language, we have a range of Ethnic liaison officers who are fluent in a number of different languages and are available to provide assistance.” ➤➤Information regarding vehicle-related offending or people receiving or offering to sell stolen property should be reported to their local Police Station.

Delay for Reeves Road Flyover R

ecently Auckland Transport officials this week confirmed that a key piece of the city’s second largest transport project, the AMETI/Eastern Busway’s Reeves Road Flyover, has been delayed.

This means further uncertainty for a project vital to unlocking congestion in east Auckland, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga.

“The Reeves Road Flyover is a critical piece of infrastructure designed to ease congestion around the Pakuranga Town Centre and allow for the Eastern Busway to run smoothly underneath, improving public transport options and travel times for east Aucklanders,” Brown says. ”Auckland Transport (AT) is claiming that this delay is due to changes in the Unitary Plan and a decision by the board of Auckland Transport to contract the remaining stages of AMETI as a single project, rather than delivering it as a number of separate individual projects.”

“Their reasoning for this approach though is vague, as there was a clear logic to the previous plan that would deliver pieces of the AMETI/Eastern Busway in a commonsense order, with the flyover coming first to alleviate congestion prior to construction of the Botany to Pakuranga stage of the Eastern Busway.”

The purpose of this sequential approach, says Brown, was to minimise the impact of construction on traffic flow and allow people to take advantage of the flyover sooner rather than later.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says Auckland Transport needs to stop the continual delays involving the AMETI/Eastern Busway’s Reeves Road Flyover and finally get on with the delivery of these critical pieces of infrastructure.

”It is also unclear what changes to the Unitary Plan AT is referring to, given it has been in effect since late-2016. AT have had plenty of time to work this out,” Brown says.

This decision to delay the project will mean another re-design of the remaining stages of the AMETI/Eastern Busway and will mean, he says, more uncertainty for the area with a Notice of Requirement application unlikely to be lodged until late 2020. ”Locals have been waiting over

a decade for this project to get underway, with repeated delays, redesigns, and funding issues pushing it further and further back. I will be urging Auckland Transport to work closely with affected parties in the area to ensure they are engaged in the next steps of this process and are fully informed and involved in the decisions going forward.”

The delay will also mean there will be some crossover between construction of the Reeves Road Flyover

and the Botany to Pakuranga stage of the Eastern Busway.

“This could make traffic congestion much worse during construction than initially thought and I will be working closely with AT to ensure they understand the impact and can take steps to mitigate as much of it as possible,” says Brown.

“Auckland Transport needs to stop the continual delays and finally get on with the delivery of these critical pieces of infrastructure.”

RE-ELECT COUNCILLOR

AT told the Times it has informed Brown on the current status of stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Busway project “on a number of occasions”, including the current review of its strategy for design and construction of the Reeves Road Flyover.

“Stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Busway between Pakuranga and Botany, including the Reeves Road Flyover, are in the design and consenting phase. The project is being built in stages and construction on the flyover and future stages between Pakuranga and Botany are planned to commence shortly after stage 1 construction between Panmure and Pakuranga is complete in 2021,” the AT spokesman said.

“Recently, we have been assessing options to improve the design and construction strategy for stages 2 and 3 in a way that maximises the transport and community outcomes, minimises the impacts of construction to the local community and provides better value for money within the existing budget while remaining within the completion date for all stages of the Eastern Busway by 2025.”

Part of this process includes establishing how and when the flyover is built within the wider Eastern Busway construction plan.

“The project is fully funded and at this stage we expect to commence work on the flyover by 2021. Once we have finalised our strategy for building these stages of the project early next year, we will provide a final completion date for the Reeves Road Flyover.”

General manager Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet says the electoral roll is closed, so people who aren’t enrolled or not enrolled at their current address will need to cast a special vote.

“Dozens of One Stop Shops will pop up around Auckland throughout the election period, making it easier to cast a special vote than ever before.”

One Stop Shop locations will include Westfield Mall in Pakuranga, Manukau, Papakura Marae and night markets in Henderson and Glenfield.

Auckland Council has also teamed up with the Blind Foundation to deliver an assisted voting service for blind and low vision voters.

My senses were annihilated.

They couldn’t register what he was doing with this (pretty fancy and very quick) street car. I tried to look cool. I failed. The video doesn’t lie.

At one point as he’s accelerating way too much toward another bend, he chirps up that we just hit

188 km/h. My brain explodes. Can you ask a race car driver to take it easy?

I didn’t. Is the car supposed to shudder violently and the tyres screech like they’re going to pop right off the rims at every bend?

Murph wasn’t even phased. He even had his hands off the wheel a couple of times as he explained something I couldn’t quite comprehend. I wasn’t listening.

Murphy makes racing round the Pukekohe Park Raceway look so easy!

A four-time winner of the Bathurst 1000, he was on hand at the track on August 29 for an ITM Auckland Supersprint Drive Day – set up for sponsors, media and other guests.

The Drive Day was a prelude to the return of Supercars to Pukekohe Park Raceway on September 13 - 15 for the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

The Drive Day featured hot laps for those keen to experience the track with a professional driver.

The Hot Laps were in spanking new street cars representing the current Supercars rivals – a McLaughlin Mustang which was driven by two-time World Touring Car Champion, Paul Radisich and the Commodore VXR by Murphy, aka the King of Pukekohe.

There was also a Q&A Session hosted by Murphy - the ITM Auckland SuperSprint’s Event Ambassador - with Supercars drivers Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup.

I digress. Murph (as I like to call him – and I did) set up the GoPro cam on the dash, posed for an incar photo with me then headed out onto the race track proper.

Dear Lord. I think I said that a few times. I may have sworn too.

Several times! Looking back at the GoPro footage I’m amazed at how many times I looked genuinely horrified.

Murph is all coolness and control, hitting bends and bumps.

irst Tea, then War” could almost be the title of Howick Little Theatre’s latest play by renowned British playwright, Alan Ayckbourn. A black comedy, cum morality play, Ayckbourn again turns the ordinary into the extraordinary as he brilliantly tackles the idea of a local middle-class, but somehow broken community, taking the law into its own hands, consumed by dogma.

Penelope Keegan is an instinctive and astute director, and in her capable hands the actors throughout have embraced their characters “ordinariness” and brought each to life, no mean feat. These are the sort of people we might meet on a daily basis; a cross-section of our society in fact.

Anna Baird and Matthew van den Berg, the devoutly Christian siblings, the catalysts for the whole situation, both give superb performances, from the impecable Britishness to their finely-tuned intense sibling relationship. They work

seamlessly together. Peter Webster’s blustery, stolid Midlander, Matthew Cousin’s rather tragic neighbour loving his wife in spite of everything and Linda Kerfoot,the gossip, all contribute greatly to the truth of the piece.

Madeleine Potter gives a very sincere performance as the young badly-treated wife, her bullying husband played with bravado by Zac Clarke. Victoria Jowers-Wilding gave us the femme fatale with absolute relish.

The set by Beck Longbottom was ideal in its simplicity with the clever pink rug, and motifs absolutely perfect. Costumes, lighting and sound as usual were spot-on.

However on Sunday afternoon the front door bell seemed to have a life of it’s own.

Alan Ayckbourn throughout his long career has always had his finger firmly on the pulse of the nation and again in one of his darkest comedies to date he has certainly kept it there. Very relevant.

ew Zealand’s politicians are grappling with the important issue of how to protect the country’s democracy from the threat of foreign influence.

Parliament’s Justice Committee is investigating the threat as part of its inquiry into the 2017 general election.

The Committee has heard evidence on the subject from the heads of the country’s two main spy agencies, the NZ Security Intelligence Service and Government Communications Security Bureau.

The spy bosses identified foreign entities building covert influence and leverage, including through electoral donations, as one of four “threat vectors” when they addressed the Committee earlier this year.

And recently they told MPs more stringent rules and greater transparency around the disclosure of political donations is needed.

At present it’s legal for overseas people or entities to donate up to $1500 to political parties or candidates here, but larger amounts can be provided if funnelled through New Zealand-based companies.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who has been sitting on the Justice Committee, says he shares the spy bosses’ concerns around the threat of foreign influence.

He’s questioned Justice Minister Andrew Little several times this year in the Parliament about what action the Government will take to tighten the law around foreign donations, and whether changes will be made in time for the 2020 general election.

Ross says only New Zealand citizens and permanent residents should be allowed to make political donations to parties and candidates in this country.

“If you are unable to influence an election by voting, you should be unable to influence an election or our democracy by making a donation,” he says.

All Kiwis should care about the integrity of New Zealand’s political system and whether or not it’s open to potential foreign influence.”

More new cops needed now N

ew Zealanders have the right to go about their lives free from harm.

That’s one reason why there’s pressure on all governments to keep crime rates low and to help Kiwis feel safe and be safe.

When I’m out on doorsteps talking to residents in our Botany community, law and order issues are one of the most common subjects people want to discuss.

People want to be able to park their vehicle in their driveway or on the road without it being broken into or stolen.

They want to be able to be at home with their family without fearing someone may break in and steal their possessions. And they absolutely do not want to become the victim of a violent crime.

Local residents are well served by our outstanding Counties Manukau East Police, but the number of people living in this area is growing and we need more Police on our streets to keep us all safe.

The current Government came to power promising an extra 1800 police over three years and so far it’s delivered 1524.

It recently announced the deployment of 78 new Police Constables around New Zealand, including 19 to our local Counties Manukau area.

That’s a good start but we need even more new police.

NZ Police are under tremendous pressure in their day to day duties, and add to that the need to run the gun buy-back properly in the wake of the March 15 Christchurch mosque shootings.

Our local police put themselves in harm’s way each and every day. The least we can do is to ensure they have the training and equipment they need to help them deal with a wide range of situations.

ACCIDENT

Two hospitalised after crash ■ BY JIM BIRCHALL Two people were hospitalised after an accident on Cook St on Sunday morning.

In a statement received by the Times, police advised they were notified of a single vehicle crash on Cook Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A member of the public reported the incident at 12.50am where it appeared the car had collided with a wall. The two occupants were taken to Middlemore Hospital, though their injuries not thought to be serious. Police enquiries into the crash are continuing.

ver been blindsided on a blind date? I have. Years ago, I was asked to pull up my shirt by a young woman who declared that she ‘usually only went out with guys with six-packs’.

I replied that, had I known this was a prerequisite, I would have stopped off at a bottle store on my way over. Needless to say, the evening went downhill from there.

By contrast, when taking my long-time partner to Silo Theatre’s The Blind Date Project for our anniversary recently, I was a little more confident of what to expect – in some respects at least.

Set in an off-beat karaoke bar, this show sees its central character, Anna (Natalie Medlock) on a blind date with various guest stars.

actors are fed lines or situations by director, Sophie Roberts. The result sets the performance free from its script, leaving the actors (effectively) blindfolded and out on a limb with nowhere to hide.

On the night we attended

Anna’s blind date was a nervous, bookish teacher, played by Danielle Cormack – former star of TV’s Wentworth. As the drinks flowed, and the two bonded, it became apparent that, despite her demeanour, Anna’s date had spent more time behind ‘bars’ than one might expect.

While both seemed to shoot from the hip more comonly than Clint Eastwood, often enough it was hard to tell where the script stopped and improvisation began, leaving the audience to speculate.

As an added bonus, this type of freestyle theatre ensures no two shows will ever be identical, so those who just can’t get enough of ‘people watching’ (or a theatre version of ‘car-crash TV’) can return night after night for fresh experiences.

A tribute to the unpredictability and (at times) outright insanity of blind dates, this show will leave some nostalgic for their single days and others grateful that such disastrous dates are behind them – ironically, as one actually would expect from an encounter in a karaoke bar, it’s sure to strike a chord (or discord) with almost anyone.

Golden girl Ainsley H

owick local Ainsley Thorpe has picked up gold and bronze medals in Europe and Canada as part of the New Zealand Triathlon team.

The 20-year-old is born and bred in east Auckland and has been competing in triathlons for almost five years. She competed in her first local triathlon when she was 16.

She was recently involved as part of a New Zealand relay team at an ITU event in Edmonton on July 22. The team comprising Ainsley, Tayler Reid, Nicole Van der Kay, Hayden Wilde won gold, giving Ainsley her first win on the international stage. She repeated the alchemy again in Lausanne on September 2 as part of a different relay team.

To cap it off she also won an individual bronze in Antwerp on June 24.

about the sport. I really only got into it because of my brother and always copied what he did. I always wanted to go to the Olympics from a young age and I loved watching Valerie Adams and seeing her win gold,” she said.

“Obviously I knew I wasn’t built for shot put but it was the gold

medal that inspired me.”

The lure of the Tokyo is omnipresent for Ainsley. “My main focus for next year is getting selected for the Olympics, a few World Series and a few World Cup races at the beginning of the year will be crucial to put myself in the best possible position (for selection)”.

Auckland market remains quiet

he national housing market remained firm in August, following on from the steady July result.

According to the CoreLogic QV House Price Index, average property values rose by 0.2 per cent from July to August, lifting the annual growth rate a touch from 2.2 per cent to 2.3 per cent.

A good way to characterise the August figures is, ‘business as usual’, and with sales activity still subdued (albeit showing slightly more encouraging signs of a pickup) and affordability stretched, a solid but unspectacular result for values is no surprise.

The market in Auckland remains quiet in terms of activity, with neither sellers nor buyers generally in any rush to strike a deal. Of course, there are always some people who have to sell their property for family or job reasons and they’re likely to be feeling a bit of downwards price pressure.

Indeed, although Auckland average property values were flat from July to August, the latest figure ($1,025,193) was still -2.3 per cent (or $23,981) lower than a year earlier.

Within the Auckland region, Franklin (0.3 per cent annual change in average property values in August) is the only area yet to see any real downwards price pressure, although the falls to date in Papakura and Waitakere have also only been modest.

The greater weakness is still concentrated in Auckland City (-2.3 per cent in year to August) and North Shore (-3.4 per cent) – although there were at least better results for the Auckland City Central and North Shore Coastal sub-areas in August.

CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson said, “It’s largely been another steady-as-she-goes month for the housing market in August.

The sluggishness of Auckland is weighing on the national picture, but away from our largest city, there are still many areas seeing consistent growth in average property values. Although the Reserve Bank delivered a shock 0.5 per cent official cash rate cut on August 7, the fact that fixed mortgage rates didn’t really budge meant that the immediate

impulse for property values was always likely to be fairly muted.”

Around the remaining of the main centres, values ticked along in August. Dunedin is still a consistently strong performer, with growth in average property values of 11.9 per cent in the year to August. The average value in Dunedin now stands at $465,457, almost $166,000 higher than four years ago.

Wellington continues to climb steadily higher too (growth of 8.3

per cent in the year to August), while Hamilton and Tauranga are churning away in the background with consistent annual growth in values of about 5 per cent. In regards to Christchurch, Davidson said “The ‘mood music’ around the garden city seems to have become a bit more optimistic in recent months, although it’s yet to show through clearly in the hard data – values only edged up by 0.4 per cent in the year to August.”

Local companies raise over $20k for cancer research T

he annual ‘Brave the Shave’ was a massive success again this year, with a total of $22,981.51 being raised by United Industries Limited in partnership with Fletchers.

Staff were asked to shave their heads or beards to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

United Industries’ Ben Hammond co-ordinated the event, and said that “It was really great having the challenge aspect this year and Fletcher doing it with us, I am keen to do this again with Fletcher with a new bunch of staff” “Our staff also had a lot of fun, we had a large bbq, friends, family

and kids and company directors were all in attendance.”

Ben also wanted to acknowledge Cut Above Academy who provided 15 trainee hair dressers who volunteered to shave people heads and beards at the United Steel, Harris Road event held recently.

I wanted to send a big thank you to all the generous people who donated to Daffodil Day last week.

Unfortunately cancer has impacted so many but it was heart-warming to see the community come together to help support those who need it.

We had over 100 volunteers out in the Botany area and they did an amazing job giving out more than 3000 daffodils over Friday and Saturday.

Thank you for giving up your time to help.

Also thank you to the businesses that supported us by providing a place to collect or running fundraisers.

Upcoming local body elections In a recent article the New Zealand Herald published (August 31) a rating of all Auckland City Councillors.

Unfortunately both Sharon Stewart and Paul Young, who represent our area, came in equal last with one other councillor with a rating of 30 per cent.

That has to be a worry and it got me thinking.

Perhaps the Times should conduct a similar rating for the current Local Board Members.

This could help electors decide whether to re elect current members or try someone else.

Why all this uproar about climate?

Climates of the world have always changed and always will.

As for global warming and CO2 heating of the planet, there are equal and opposite views.

Research would indicate that we are in a cooling period with intermittent warm spots. CO2 emitted by human activity is small at 400p/million and has a minuscule effect on any planet warming.

What we are not being told by the media and vested scientific interests, is that CO2 is a necessary ingredient for healthy plant growth.

In our agricultural country, this should ring some bells! More CO2 the better for our agricultural industry. We now have school children being indoctrinated in this ‘climate change religion’ and scientists scared of losing their job or financial grants if they do not toe the political line.

It has become a religion just like other man-made religions. It’s the old story of man trying to control that which he never can and never will. Basically it is not his to control.

There are far more destructive human events about to unfold on planet earth which few are prepared for and climate change is not one of them, but that is another story.

Over the weekend during the finals of a kids’ soccer tournament, my nine-yearold son Cailean was subjected to verbal abuse from two parents of a member of the opposing team.

We believe this was an attempt to intimidate my son and the other players on his team so that their son’s team could win.

In spite of my husband’s Cailean Hamilton best efforts (as both father and team coach) to raise the young Fencibles team’s (Fencibles United Hamilton 10th grade rep team) morale, the damage had already been done and the boys were so badly scared by these “adults’” outbursts that they didn’t play as they usually did and lost.

After the game, the father “apologised” but in such a way as to actually attack my son again.

Normally, I would let it go as yet another display of poor parental sportsmanship, having witnessed this too many times before. However, my son is doing speeches for his school work and had already produced a heartfelt speech outlining the effects of negative sideline behaviour.

We asked him to record it and I uploaded it to YouTube so that others (especially those parents who feel that their child’s team must win at all costs) could see it.
