Burglars and bomb threat

A

ndrew Beatson has had a gutsful. The 32-year-old butchery owner does 12-13 hours daily and some weeks works seven days. His Aussie Butcher franchise – a New Zealand-owned company which sells only Kiwi meat – is a busy operation and employs nine staff including part-timers. Any spare time Beatson has is precious and is devoted to his family. What’s getting on his wick though is a tidal wave of theft plaguing the Ti Rakau Drive store in Botany where he’s been for

10 years. And the apparent lack of police interest or adequate response. “There’s a lot of shoplifting. I’ve never seen this much,” said Beatson. “It’s definitely got worse. I’m guessing it’s tougher for people.” More alarming is that he and his staff have not only wrestled with thieves who had a trolley of stolen product, he’s also tried carjacking a vehicle a thief used after fleeing the scene with hundreds of dollars of meat. “We’ve stopped numerous ones. It’s sort of got to the point where we don’t even ring the police,” he

said. “The questions asked are just stupid. They ask if I want them to fingerprint. They say to trespass them. If anyone’s going to steal they’re not going to stay around to be told off. I’ve been advised to get a (car) rego. We’ve done that and nothing gets done. We’ve been burgled countless times. I don’t even ring up (anymore).” The thefts are hurting the company financially too, including the increase in insurance premiums. “They get away with (up to) $500 of goods. It will costs a couple of grand to repair a door.

We’ve tried to make it hard. They just break through the doors.” The store now has a steel door and steel bollards but acknowledges that if they want to get in, they will. In terms of dollar value in respect of losses? “Tens of thousands on repairs and upgrades. With shoplifting $100$300 (of goods each time).” His frustration has erupted with the return of an alleged repeat offender. “The same lady has been six times and has been caught four times,” said Beatson.

The Whitford BP was targeted by burglars overnight Monday. Police received a call at about 3am, some 30-40 minutes after the incident. Police staff were on Tuesday attending the scene for forensic examinations and to follow-up leads. Meanwhile police and fire fighters responded to a bomb threat made around 8am on Tuesday on The Parade, Bucklands Beach. Cordons were in place for a time on The Parade and Wharf Rd, Bucklands Beach. Police said a man was being assessed by medical experts after his arrest for making the bomb threat. The Times was told that the person involved was being assessed at Middlemore Hospital for mental health issues. There was no bomb or explosive device.

Mistaken identity

It wasn’t local outlet Online Carpet on Fair Go ■■By Scott Yeoman

I

t’s a classic case of mistaken identity and one that locallyowned business Online Carpet is desperate to clear up. A few weeks ago popular consumer affairs show Fair Go ran a story about a business named Carpet Online – a story that was not a good look for that company. But the episode, which aired on September 26, has also led to people thinking Online Carpet – which is located at The Hub in Botany and is a completely different company – is the one allegedly at fault. After the show, co-owners of the Botany-based business, Ryan Croawell

and Cam Irvine, both received texts from clients saying they were “very disappointed”. Mr Croawell, 29, said other clients have approached him while he’s been out on jobs and people have mentioned it when they’ve come into the store. “We’ve also had people phone up and be like, ‘Oh by the way you’re not the company that was on Fair Go are you?’” Mr Irvine, 32, said they don’t know how much business they are missing out on because of the mix-up. “There will be people we don’t hear from who don’t come in because of what they’ve heard.” The producer of Fair Go has apologised to the Online Carpet team

and has supplied them with a letter to show people. “We have never aired a story about your company ‘Online Carpet’ – in fact we’ve never even received a complaint about you Co-owners of Online Carpet, Ryan Croawell (left) and Cam Irvine. Times photo Scott Yeoman guys,” he wrote. And we support local sport clubs and Mr Croawell said stuff like that. We’re a local company.” they have worked really hard to keep He said they completely support a good reputation and this incident Fair Go and what it does for has started to damage that. Local consumers, but they just want the word of mouth has always been local community to know the truth important for them, he said. – Carpet Online was on Fair Go, not “We do 15 houses a week on an Online Carpet. average and most of them are local.

‘They’re robbing me blind’ ➤➤From page 1 The last visit was on Father’s Day. “The lookout was a boy of 6 or 7. Dad was in the car,” he said. “She stole $300 of steak. The son said f*** you, it’s Father’s Day. I’ve seen it before where the kids are used as a distraction. “We’ve been trying to get her for a long time. Police say ring 111. We’ve tried. I can’t hold her. I understand they’ve got bigger things to

worry about.” He wants to know where the disincentive is. “I’ve carjacked the car myself,” he admitted. “Someone could have gone around and trespassed her then or come here and looked at the video footage.” He also told of staff trying to get stolen product back from a shoplifter. “There was a fight over a trolley with stolen meat.

We were fighting over it,” said Beatson. “What are we supposed to do?” Counties Manukau East acting Area Commander Jared Pirret said the business complex where Mr Beatson’s store is located has seen several shops targeted for burglary and vehicle crime. “This has been an ongoing issue and reducing crime in the area is a priority for police. “

We have identified a number of risks within the complex, including bad lighting and visual blocks (trees). These things can make a property more likely to be targeted by opportunistic criminals. “We acknowledge Mr Beatson’s frustrations that his business has been targeted by criminals in this way and want to assure, both him and the wider community, that we have identified the area as a high priority.” Police are working

with the Greater East Tamaki Business Association, Howick/Pakuranga Crime Watch and the Asian Council on Reducing Crime to increase visibility in the area, Inspector Pirret said. “The most recent event at ‘Aussie Butchers’ in September is under investigation and we are awaiting CCTV footage from Mr Beatson. “We have made other lines of enquiry, including looking into the vehicle used, however these have been unsuccessful. “

election results

No change to our councillors ■■By Nick Krause

S

haron Stewart and Dick Quax – both Independents – have won back their seats on council for the Howick Ward in the local body elections. And they will share the council chamber with new mayor Phil Goff (Independent, 186,445 votes received) who easily romped home ahead of nearest rival Vic Crone (Independent, 110,926). Perhaps more surprising was third placegetter Chloe Swarbrick easily claiming the third greatest number of votes in Auckland (28,545) ahead of John Palino (22,280). On the home front Mrs Stewart was comfortably returned with (17,839) followed by Mr Quax (15,446). Independent Paul Young was way back (7021). Collectively, they picked up more votes than the other ward candidates combined. Looking at the Howick Local Board, there was just one change amongst the nine seats split over three subdivisions. In the Howick subdivision, John Spiller (Vision & Voice, 6176), Adele White (Vision & Voice, 6168) and Mrs Stewart (5939) got in, however Mrs Stewart will have to drop this role as she is a full-time councillor again. Fourth-placed Jim Donald (Ratepayers and Residents, 4748) takes the seat and gets back in.

Sharon Stewart and Dick Quax have won back thier seats on council.

In the Botany subdivision, Peter Young is the only new face on the Howick Local Board and clocked up the highest number of votes there (Vision & Voice, 4991) and will join a pair who were returned – Lucy

with a one-two-three. Katrina Bungard (5906) and David Collings (5665) are returned in the seat and Garry Boles (4534) takes the third seat, formerly held by Steve Udy who retired. Mr Boles was previously seated in the Botany subdivision. Former Olympian Bruce Kendall came very close to securing a seat (4300). Mrs Stewart, who on Saturday night was celebrating with friends and family at home, was still frantically fielding calls of congratulations more than two hours after learning she’d been returned to the Auckland Council. And she’d not even had a chance to tell her husband who was out on the golf course. “I’m really, really pleased...I’m really pleased the community got behind me. I really appreciate it.”

She also revealed just how nervous she was with the strong selection of candidates, which prompted her to run for both council and the Howick Local Board. “When I saw Bruce Kendall, [the other being colleague Dick Quax], I thought, ‘Gosh, another Olympian,” she said. “I wanted to serve the community that I love. “I’m delighted and looking forward to serving the community.” The celebrations tonight will be special, she said on Saturday. “I’ve told everybody that if I don’t get in, there’s going to be a lot of food to take to the City Mission.” Mr Quax, who is delighted to have been re-elected, won’t be sitting on his laurels. “I feel very excited and humbled by the support that I have received from the Howick Ward,” he told the Times. “I have a number of priorities as far as governance is concerned.” He and Stewart work as regional governors and so also have broader concerns, although the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) is high on the list of priorities. “The continuation of that and working closely with Auckland Transport to ensure the infrastructure is going to cope with the intensity of houses.” As to the Unitary Plan – the city’s blueprint – he is “very concerned” with density up Pakuranga Road. “Region-wise, continuing the work from the Manukau City days, making sure we have an adequate supply of land for affordable housing.” The issue of whether the Auckland port should be moved is another unresolved matter. “Infrastructure financing is another thing of interest to me,” he said. “Over the past few years we’ve disregarded new ways of financing – bonds rather than rates or development contributions.”

➤➤Health representatives chosen Successful candidates elected for the Counties Manukau District Health Board are: Katrina Bungard,Vision & Voice; Apulu Reece Autagavaia, Labour; Colleen Brown, Team Health; Catherine Abel-Pattinson, Team Health; Lyn Murphy, Independent; Ashraf Choudhary, Labour; Dianne Glenn, Team Franklin.

High quality, farm fresh produce at Fig and Plum I

t was an emotional moment for Clay Pryce and his dad Stuart Pryce when the doors to Fig and Plum, prominently located at the crossroads of Vincent and Wellington Streets, opened last week. Seeing a steady stream of people walk into their brand new fruit, vegetable and fine food store was a dream come true after six months of hard work, plenty of research and sleepless nights that went into translating their dream into reality. “Our business model is based on quality produce and personalised customer service,” says Stuart who has been a grower and exporter of fresh produce in Hawke’s Bay. “Our three children have grown up in the fruit capital, familiar with orchards, they know what fresh produce is all about.” Stuart and Cheryl moved from Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, to be nearer their children, Jesse, Clay and Gracie. Their grandchildren, Aria and Ollie, are regular visitors to Fig and Plum. The family owned business is run by Stuart and Clay, along with their partners Cheryl and Angelique. Clay stresses the fact that quality is of utmost importance to them. “We have over 500 items in here and everything is hand selected. “There have been many long hours spent sourcing directly from the growers and hand-picking

produce of the highest standard to ensure that the customers get the best,” he says. An array of organic milk, artisan roast coffee and dry products (some organic) and free range eggs are on offer along side freshly sourced fruits, vegetables and flowers grown locally. Unlike the impersonal shopping experience in a supermarket, customers are personally greeted.

They are keen to go the extra mile to better the shopping experience. “We are here to give people what they want,” says Clay of the family owned and operated shop. While the name of the shop Fig and Plum was conceived by mum Cheryl, everything else you see in this shop from the shelves to the painting, is done by us, says Clay with pride.

As a way of showing appreciation, Fig and Plum is offering a free coffee voucher to customers who spend over $40. “We are giving our customers a card for a free coffee at the Apothecary cafe in Howick, which again is a family owned business. “We may even work with our local butcher at some stage to create a sense of local community,” says Stuart who has a strong community

sensibility. And going by the rave reviews on social media that have been circulating in the short time that Fig and Plum has opened, it looks like the community has embraced the boutique fruit and vegetable shop to its fold. Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking

Campaign

ONE QUESTION

What will be different this term? Howick Ward

Sharon Stewart: “I will have a new mayor to work with who I have a lot of respect for and feel confident we can do a lot better for the people of Auckland than the previous council; also we will have a better relationship with the local board.” Dick Quax: “I would like to see the governing body drop unnecessary committees; make decisions around the CRL costs; address housing affordability, congestion and infrastructure funding; whether the port should stay; give local boards greater power and ability to fund more local initiatives, perhaps through targeted rates.”

HOWICK SUBDIVISION

John Spiller: “One thing I will be pushing for the new board to establish is regular ‘clinics’ to enable members of the public to come along and have an informal

chat with board members about any concerns they may have or projects they would like to see commissioned in our area.” Adele White: “More pressure on Council for completion of Local Board projects; added efficiency; and procurement that is transparent, economical and local.” Jim Donald: “After the last three years, and now being the only Independent Member on the Howick Local Board, I am anticipating an interesting time.”

PAKURANGA SUBDIVISION Katrina Bungard: “With the Unitary Plan now in place we will see an increase in planning for new growth, infrastructure and transport development.” Garry Boles: “I want to complete what I have started and look forward to the challenges ahead.” David Collings: “I’d like to see us cut down the bureaucracy and

politics and work closer with the community.”

OUR

BOTANY SUBDIVISION

Peter Young: “My priority issues CANDIDATES are making Botany a beautiful ARE: and safe place, finding transport solutions and making sure the residents and ratepayers are getting value for their rates money – as well as the building of Ormiston Library, the town centre, swimming pool and the ongoing development of Barry Curtis Park.” Lucy Schwaner: “With good Local Board leadership we will be Adele White a united Board that is proactive in engaging the Mayor, our local councillors, community organisations and ratepayers in Howick.” Bob Wichman: “The newly elected Howick Local Board has the proven experience to provide an even stronger representation for our community.” David Collings

OPINION

This isn’t a fair representation ■ BY SCOTT YEOMAN

W

hen you look at the 11 candidates who have been elected to represent the Howick Local Board area for the next three years, what do you see? Familiar faces and names, people who have spent a lot of time serving and leading our communities, candidates passionate about the area we live in. All of those answers are true but when I opened my laptop on Saturday afternoon and looked at the local election results, I saw 10 white Europeans. I saw three candidates who have been elected for a second term (six years) and seven who have been elected for a third (nine years). I saw a few career politicians who have been representing the people of this area for even longer than that, from before the Super City amalgamation in 2010. But what I didn’t, and don’t, see in those 11 candidates is the changing communities of Botany, Howick and Pakuranga.

This is despite a major increase in candidate competition and variety in 2016. Howick was the third mostcontested ward in Auckland this year, the Botany and Howick subdivisions were two of the top 10 most-contested local board seats, and Pakuranga was not far behind. Yet we have only one new face this term and he is the only nonEuropean representing our area. According to the 2013 Census, 55 per cent of the usually resident population in the Howick Local Board area identify as European. But what about the rest? What about the 38.8 per cent who identify with an Asian ethnic identity? Or the 5.2 per cent who identify as Maori? Or the 4.6 per cent Pacific peoples? These census figures show there are also people who identify with more than one ethnicity, and I haven’t even mentioned those who identify as Middle Eastern, African or Latin American. And remember, that data was collated three years ago. Those ethnic percentages (which equates to tens of thousands of non-

Europeans) are bound to be bigger next census. There were at least eight nonEuropean candidates standing for the Howick Local Board and the Howick Ward in 2016. One got in. Is that a reflection of the residents who live here? Think of your neighbours, the people you see at the supermarket, the kids your children go to school with. Whether you like it or not – and I realise a lot of people in this area don’t – Auckland is changing. Botany, Howick and Pakuranga are changing too. Actually, they already have. Our local leaders should be able to understand and relate to the changing population they represent. The Howick Local Board area is not 91 per cent solely European. Not even close. So why are 10/11 of our representatives of predominately, if not total, European heritage? And that’s not new. Last term 11/11 were European and the term before that it was 10/11. Our leaders have stayed the same for six, nine or even more years, while the communities they

represent have changed. So what, you might say. Keep race out of politics. The people who have been elected are the most qualified candidates for the job. Well, that’s wrong too. Most of the non-European candidates who ran this year are just as qualified, if not more, to be on the Howick Local Board or represent the Howick Ward on the Auckland Council. Many of them have lived here for more than 10 or 20 years – some longer than that. They know this area and its people well. They have successful careers, kids in local schools and plenty of leadership experience. They are equally as passionate about our communities. So, if we are keeping race out of politics, why weren’t they voted in? One answer lies with the people who vote or, rather, those who don’t. Preliminary results show voter turnout was less than 43 per cent in all three Howick Local Board subdivisions this year. That’s a lot of people who didn’t vote. Over the next three years, we need to fully engage these nonvoters in the local political process because – according to research conducted by Auckland Council before, during and after the 2013 local election – they are most-likely the same people who are not being

represented. Individuals aged between 18-24, members of Asian and Indian ethnic groups, and those who have been in Auckland for less than a year are the people described in the 2013 Auckland Council report as being less likely to vote in the Auckland local elections. Those more likely to vote were described as being 55 and older, male, European, and those who have been Auckland residents for 10 years or more. Other local and national studies before and after have found similar demographic results – nonEuropeans, new residents and young people are less likely to vote. Naturally, people vote for candidates they can relate to, people they know and are comfortable with. So if older Europeans who have lived in this area for more than 10 years are the ones most likely voting, then of course our elected representatives are going to mirror those demographics. We have until 2019 to change that and what better way to start than by engaging young and nonEuropean residents who are eligible to vote, as well as those who have recently moved into our area and are here to stay. They also deserve to have local leaders they can relate to. Email: scott@times.co.nz

Driven by an avid love of nature, the landscape artist admits that he has at times put his life and limb at risk, travelling to some of the most dangerous places, only to capture the myriad colours and forms of breathtaking vistas on canvas. Looking at the artistic impression of Mount Cook, Barry Hung, president of the Pakuranga Chinese Association (who plays translator for the Times interview,) says that the artist has skilfully integrated the East and West using Chinese ink with Western oil paints to create stunning pieces of art. For the uninitiated, landscape painting has been regarded as the highest form of Chinese painting and still is. Mr Hung explains that while traditional Chinese paintings are done on silk and mounted on scrolls, the acclaimed artist has broken away from tradition and mounted his artworks using different material.

Artistic impressions of views from a coastal farm on the 90 Mile Beach, alternated by a burst of vivid colours depicting the geothermal activity in Rotorua, treescapes in Panmure, Pancake rocks in Punakaiki, seagulls on the Kaikoura coast beach, make captivating artworks. It’s obvious the artist has followed his passion covering the length and breadth of New Zealand. Vice chairman of the New Zealand Chinese Painting Research Society as well as a council member of New Zealand Chinese Artists Association, and council member of New Zealand Artist Association, a number of museums in China have displayed his works of art. The artist who moved to New Zealand five years ago has converted his garage into a studio, and continues to paint day and night without respite. He says his work is a true reflection of his love for the beautiful country he now calls home.

Petition will go to Goff ■■By Marianne Kelly

A

uckland’s new mayor Phil Goff can expect to receive about 5000 signatures on his desk as the fight to save Howick’s iconic Hauraki Gulf views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve continues. Early this week the petition, circulated by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA), had reached 4848 signatures, including those hand-written and handed in to local businesses. Only 60 more signatures are needed to get 2000 online responses. Along with the petition the HRRA is asking for public donations to help cover the costs of lodging an appeal in the Environment and High Courts against Auckland Council. Its proposed plan changes would allow multiple

13-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Parkhill Roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill. HRRA has been told it could cost up to $60,000 to take the appeal the whole way, says Gayleen Mackereth who chairs the HRRA. This week $8480 had been raised, including $2273 donated on a givealittle page. “HRRA needs much more money to fight the battle in the courts,” Mrs Mackereth says. “Barristers are very expensive. We know Howickians are passionate about this issue, but we need everyone to spare us what they can. “We have recently been contacted by an overseas professor who, some time ago, wrote a paper as a visiting fellow of Auckland University,” she says. The title was ‘What is the Value of Rangitoto?’ in which the professor and

a fellow author provided a robust case for conserving the view of Rangitoto from development, particularly high rise developments. “We should not have to go through this again,” Mrs Mackereth says. “But now here we are again asking exactly the same question of views of the Gulf and Rangitoto from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve.” She is urging people to write to members of parliament and Prime Minister John Key to press the issue. The HRRA is planning to contact Mr Goff directly. Howickians willing to support this urgent cause can make donations to “The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association” ASB Highland Park account number 12-30890123712-02. HRRA’s givealittle page is at www.Givealittle.co.nz and search Stockade Hill or

Prayer initiative for the city

60,000

30,000

Modelled on successful prayer breakfasts in Washington, London and Sydney, Auckland is having its first ‘prayer breakfast’ at the end of this month. The organisers are the Auckland Church Leaders Meeting and NZ Christian Network, with support from World Vision, Christian Savings and the Bible Society of NZ. Open to all, the Auckland Prayer Breakfast is a new annual community event on the city calendar. This year, well-known church leaders Pastor Tak Bhana, Glyn Carpenter, Bishop Kito Pikaahu and Princess Mele Si’uilikutapu, will facilitate prayers, including poverty and housing, wisdom for the new mayor, council and local boards, ethnic and migrant issues, family and marriage. About 700 people are expected to participate in the multi-cultural event ➤➤The Auckland Prayer Breakfast is at 6.308.40am on October 27 at the North Level 5 Lounge, Eden Park, Auckland Central. Entry is $35. www.aucklandprayerbreakfast.org.nz

More ferry sailings Four more sailings have been added to the Half Moon Bay ferry service. From October 17, Auckland Transport will be adding 9.15am and 3.15pm sailings from Half Moon Bay to Auckland city and 8.35am and 2.30pm sailings from Auckland city to Half Moon Bay. Ferry Services Manager Gareth Willis said the extra trips will help with issues around capacity and peak times and mean more choice for those travelling during the day. Meanwhile, he said construction is well underway on the new pier at Half Moon Bay, which is due to open in early 2017. Auckland Transport said ferry patronage on services to Half Moon Bay has grown by 9 per cent in the past two years.

Dr John Malcomson

Are you on track to kill your mortgage before you retire?

medicine

Time to hang up stethoscope D

r John Malcomson has tended to thousands of patients over four decades, has delivered babies who became patients and was general practitioner to four generations in a handful of Howick families. After 40 years as a GP in Howick, last month he left his practice for the last time. The first order of business? A muchanticipated holiday in Europe with his wife Cris. He estimates he has seen more than 10,000 different people over the years. Serendipity, in no small part, ensured the couple who came from the UK for a year-long adventure, stayed on a little longer. That was in 1974. Everything since, Dr Malcomson (69) said, is a bit of blur. It helped immensely in those early days that Cris was a nurse – “a typical Shortland Street arrangement” as he puts it. Cris is a Kiwi (her great grandfather Len - she thinks Adams was a drummer boy in the Maori Wars). “She was doing her nursing OE when we met in Sussex,” he said. “She brought me to New Zealand for a year and somehow or other we got stuck.” Fresh from Birmingham, and yet to start their family, they found work relatively easily as they were able to pitch for locum medical positions as a doctor/ nurse team. For a couple of years that took them to Riverton, 30km west of Invercargill, and to the Hauraki Gulf, experiences he now deems “very educational”. “I’d seen things on Waiheke Island I’d only read in text books,” he said. “I was a young, green grad in a new country.” He recalls setting up practice in Picton Street, below the bus company in Crawford House, now a reserve. How he got there falls to timing. Cris’s father Gordon Menzies was an accountant for Drs Keith Simcock, Trevor Young and John

Betteridge and he introduced the young Englishman to them. “Keith Simcock took me under his wing and organised a series of locums in the area for me and that’s how we came to know Howick,” he said. Dr Simcock died a few years ago. Doctors Young and Betteridge still practise and remain friends. Starting at the practice, where he joined Dr Mike Cooper, came at nerve-wracking time. Just a few days later daughter Penny (now Peskett) was born. He visited Dr Cooper, 88, at a retirement village in Glendowie before heading overseas. Four decades has brought with it innumerable memories. For some six years he delivered babies at the Howick Maternity Hospital, located in the same building as Gulf Views Rest Home in Selwyn Road. “I think I was still looking after one or two of those babies when I retired,” he said. The surgery has always been busy. “My list size would have been around 1200-1400 over the years,” Dr Malcomson said. “People come and go; they are born and they pass away.” Their practice was initially at 12 Picton Street, below the Crawford Reserve, where the bus company once was. “When (Dr) Jack (Lin) and I moved to Fencible Drive six months ago we leased the building to Crawford House and they’ve had their signage on it for several months. They needed the extra space.” The obvious differences in medical practice revolve around more sophisticated technology. In the early days, his wife would field the calls and if she needed to contact him on his rounds would phone a patient’s home. “It worked because it had to,” he said. “Mobile phones make it easier to keep in touch with people, computers have enabled us to keep much more sophisticated medical records, medical imaging, laboratory tests and so on are much better than when I first graduated,” he said.

“I remember the first ultrasound scanner arriving at the maternity teaching hospital in my final year. The experts could see a baby. All I could see was snow. Now we can tell the gender of a baby from a very early stage.” One thing that has stayed the same since the days of Hippocrates and will never change is that patients are individuals with their own personalities, hopes, aspirations and fears, he said. “This is what makes medicine, particularly general practice, tick. It makes the job challenging, frightening, exasperating, interesting, stimulating, heartwarming and professionally rewarding all at the same time.” The memories are many. “My wife Cris worked with me for 18 years in Howick as our practice nurse. She retired two years ago to help our daughter with our grandchildren,” he said. “We’ve always enjoyed working together and managed to separate our working from our domestic lives.” (Daughter Penny, in Howick, has three children and son Ian, in London, has two). He will miss the collegiality and the daily buzz of work and intends keeping up those friendships. “It goes without saying that I have enjoyed a very happy professional life with Jack Lin and our dedicated professional, nursing, managerial and reception staff. I know I’ve left behind an excellent team in good heart.” Part of his legacy will be setting up East Care and the East Health PHO 28 years ago with a cohort of doctors - who are good friends to this day – Dr Henry Doerr, Dr Betteridge, Dr Young, Dr Bruce Kidd and Dr Graeme Kidd among others. “I’m really pleased with that. We started off as amateurs and became professional medical directors.” Apart from travelling, he wishes to do more tramping, cycling, amateur photography and astronomy. And there are the grandchildren.

Will you then have time to save enough for retirement? Dianne Barlow at Botany South can get you on the right track. To book an obligation-free consultation with Dianne, please take 5 minutes to complete the online form.

Also, voters who own property within a local council area, but who usually live outside this, can apply to go on the ratepayer roll. I find it curious that people who voted in the election for the mayor, council, wards etc were not necessarily NZ citizens. Why is it that non-NZ citizens can vote and possibly change the lives of NZ citizens as a result of their voting. Surely control of the local bodies of NZ should be in the hands of its citizens and not be able to be influenced by the

he Annual Clevedon A & P show has come a long way! The 103rd show since its inception in 1909 will be held on November 12 and 13 and as always the organisers are looking forward to making it a great family event. The rural event steeped in tradition has people from far and wide come along with their families, friends, horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, pets and prized homemade goods. Interestingly, generations of families have been involved with this show, albeit now with a few modern twists. Apart from animals of all sizes with their offsprings in tow, as well as the popular farmyard where you can get up, close and personal, there will be a food and wine tent, trade stalls galore and entertainment for the whole family. New to the show this year is the FMX Freestyle Motorbike Exhibition, with their group of daredevil riders performing all kinds of stunts. From the moment you enter at the gate, there will be horse and cart rides, flying foxes, Ferris wheel and

electric go-carts. The amazing team of Russell Higgins and his horses will showcase the wonder of being a horse whisperer in the ring to entertain the crowds, along with the Auckland Series Strongman Competition and the sheep races! This year is the Lecture

AWARENESS

The cold, hard facts Breast cancer affects one in nine Kiwi women over the course of their lifetime. Eight women, on average, will hear news today that they have breast cancer. Seventy per cent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 80 per cent of women who die from it, are aged 50 years or older. While women over the age of 50 are most at risk, younger women get breast cancer too. Six per cent of breast cancers in New Zealand occur under the age of 30 years. Although it’s uncommon, men also get breast cancer. On average, 20 men are diagnosed in New Zealand every year. Around 3000 New Zealand women and 20 men are diagnosed every year. The risk of breast cancer increases as women age. Around 75 per cent of all cases occur in women over 50 years. Maori women have, on average, a 33 per cent higher incidence of breast cancer than non-Maori women. Maori and Pacific women are also at greater risk of dying of breast cancer than other NZ women. Over a 10 year average, Maori women have shown to have a 65.4 per cent higher mortality rate from breast cancer than non-Maori women. Pacific women in New Zealand are more likely to die of breast cancer than other non-Maori New Zealand women despite having a similar risk to other women of developing the disease. More than 600 New Zealand women die from breast cancer each

Patrol NZ to find out a little bit more about what they do. Police also work very closely with them so that they could help out in any way they possibly can. Ho Yoong Hoh, a district representative of Counties Manukau Neighbourhood Support, says: “It’s about having neighbours look out for each other and support one another.” Rosa Chow, who has worked actively with the Asian Council on Reducing Crime for a long time, says that they are dedicated to ensuring communities are safe. The teams will be looking for more volunteer recruits at Pakuranga Plaza next week.

year. Mortality rates have dropped by 27 per cent since 1994 - a function of greater breast health awareness, the introduction of the national screening programme for women 44-69 years and more cancers being found earlier enabling successful treatment. Regular mammograms find cancer early and save lives. The 10 year survival rate is 92 per cent if a breast cancer is found through a mammogram compared to 75 per cent if the cancer is detected by chance/ self examination because the cancer is generally more advanced when a symptom appears. The national screening rate is around 70 per cent of women aged 50-69 years and 64 per cent of Maori. Around 374,000 women have had a mammogram through Breast Screen Aotearoa in the two years to Oct 2014. As indicated in the following table, a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer increases with age. Approximately Seventy five per cent of breast cancers are diagnosed in women 50 years and older. While breast cancer is less common in women under the age of 40, women in their 20s and 30s can get it too (approximately 6 per cent of cases are in this age group). Recent research from Australia, and the United Kingdom shows a one in nine lifetime risk of a woman being diagnosed with breast cancer; however, the USA is showing a trend towards a higher incidence with a 1 in 8 to 1 in 7 lifetime risk. Speed limit when passing a school bus rule and slow down to 20km/h passing a school bus that has stopped, no matter which side of the road you are driving on,” says Wendy McGowan, national president of RWNZ. “The roads in our rural communities are not always quiet roads and we need to be responsible for playing our part to make the roads safer for everyone who uses the roads, especially our children.”

RWNZ also advocate for parents and caregivers to teach children about road safety when they are getting on and off the bus at the gate or at the designated point on the road. Accompany children to the bus stop and ensure that they understand what to do. Let friends and neighbours know that the buses are back on the roads and to watch out for children.

our homes today

Avoid renovation DIY injuries Be careful when tackling DIY renovations

S

afety should always be a priority when renovating your home. Being illequipped or unprepared can lead to many different types of injuries, particularly in the hands, knees, elbows, shoulders and back. That’s why it’s extremely important to be cautious when it comes to DIY renovations.

Common causes of injury

Dry out for summer Take advantage of the warmer days to make your home drier, healthier and cleaner and save money on the energy bill, advises Christian Hoerning of EECA ENERGYWISE. The top five tips to help make life better in the spring include: ➤➤Dry clothes outside on the line. Enjoy the fresh smell of clothes dried on the clothes line. Drying clothes inside makes a house damp and mouldy. Using a clothes

dryer costs about $1 a load. ➤➤Air the home. Houses can get damp over winter, leading to mould. Air a home at least once a day by opening doors and windows for about half an hour a day. Leave windows open on a safety latch if possible. Open wardrobe and cupboard doors. ➤➤Give bedding a burst of sun. Duvets, pillows and other heavy bedding absorb moisture. Use the sun to dry and air bedding outside for fresh bedding.

➤➤De-clog heat pump filters. A heat pump won’t run efficiently if the filters aren’t cleaned every fortnight. If the job hasn’t been done over winter the filters will probably be clogged with dust and debris. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or find a ‘how to’ video on www. energywise.govt.nz. ➤➤Clean gutters. Gutters can fill up with leaves during the winter storms, potentially making a house damp and contributing to mould.

➤➤Lifting heavy materials combined with a lack of help. ➤➤Making uncoordinated or erratic movements. ➤➤Fatigue and exhaustion caused by a lack of breaks. ➤➤A workspace that’s too restrictive. ➤➤Inexperience using certain tools. ➤➤Prevent accidents from happening Always keep the areas where you are working free of clutter. Corridors, hallways and the areas around scaffolding should be clear of any equipment, materials or debris. Always wear protective gloves and steeltoed boots while working and make sure the workspace has adequate lighting. Take frequent breaks to avoid overexerting yourself. A few minutes rest here and there will help in avoiding careless mistakes.

Act fast in the event of an accident Despite best efforts, mishaps can still occur. That’s why it’s important to take

the necessary measures in the event of an injury. For a cut, apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth while keeping the injured limb raised above the head. If it’s a deep and serious wound seek emergency help right away. For any eye-related injury a simple rinse using water should do the trick. However, seek medical attention immediately should a foreign object become lodged in an eye. In the event of amputation (such as a finger), contain the bleeding first and then contact emergency services. If at all possible, roll the cut appendage in a moist cloth, place it in a sealable bag and put it on ice.

Let’s talk about All Blacks depth T

o give an example of the All Blacks rugby depth, only Ben Smith among the seven All Black backs who beat South Africa 57-15 in Durban on Sunday were starters in the 2015 World Cup final triumph against Australia. The missing stars were Aaron Smith, Daniel Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Julian Savea and Nehe Milner-Skudder. Replacements TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Ryan Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown, Waisake Naholo and Israel Dagg have been a revelation. Although Perenara doesn’t have Aaron Smith’s speed of pass he’s a feisty, dangerous attacking halfback and a vigorous defender. Barrett doesn’t possess Carter’s goal-kicking accuracy but he’s a lightning fast, freakish attacker whose tactical appreciation and all-round skills have sharpened remarkably. The biggest surprise, however, has been the outstanding midfield combination of Ryan Crotty and 21-year-old Lienert-Brown whose excellence has left Sonny-Bill Williams, Malakai Fekitoa, George Moala and Charlie Ngatai facing a difficult job challenging them. Nevertheless the unlucky Ngatai was the best midfield back in the Super Rugby championship before suffering a bad concussion that put paid to his test prospects. And, at 31, SBW remains an amazing ball

distributor. All are individually talented. But the question is whether they have the same chemistry that has made Crotty and Lienert-Brown such a revelation? Not only do they combine sweetly to set up tries for the back three, but they are outstanding tacklers who offer opponents few chances. With fullback Dagg returning to the international fold and demonstrating his versatility with good performances on the wing, competition for places there will

heat up when Milner-Skudder recovers from injury to join him, Naholo and Julian Savea for starting berths. As a champion fullback Ben Smith, at 30, is playing the best rugby of his career, combining brave defence with an exciting, daring attacking game. Much of the credit for the team’s success deservedly goes to Steve Hansen and his harmonious coaching staff. Add to that fellow selector, the astute Grant Fox, and it’s clear that they have chosen and developed

the best players the nation has to offer. Another factor is the consistency with which their reserves make an impact over the final quarter. In fact against the Boks, the team scored an amazing 28 of their 57 points within the final 10 minutes with four converted tries. Playing a big part in setting up two of them and scoring one himself was Liam Squire who demonstrated the same earthshattering dynamism we have come to expect from Ardie Savea. In realising the attacking impact

Squire could bring to the All Blacks, it didn’t bother Hansen that he lost his starting Highlanders No 8 jersey to workaholic Luke Whitelock. Meanwhile, the forwards have also played their part in dominating the set pieces and developing their passing skills. Kieran Read has led the team well with plenty of support up front from Dane Coles, Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock, Jerome Kaino and Sam Cane before he was sidelined because of injury. Although it has been a convincing unbeaten run for this team in the Rugby Championship, the demise of Australia and South Africa has been hugely disappointing in failing to provide meaningful opposition. While the All Blacks did beat the Wallabies 34-17 in last year’s World Cup final, they battled hard to overcome the Boks 20-18. How quickly times have changed.
