Organised by the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association, Tamihere had come with sharpened claws as he hit out at Goff, openly calling him “a disgrace”. “Under his leadership things have got out of control. This mayor doesn’t understand business—from our rates going up to petrol prices, housing and faceless, non-elected bureaucrats of Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs) controlling Auckland Services; and million dollar reviews that no one gets to read,” Tamihere said. The former Labour Party Minister clearly won round one as the people in the room openly

Palino refused to draw blood and instead preferred to focus on finding a solution to the traffic congestion as he pushed the idea of satellite cities and spoke up for small businesses. “Socially we are a failure. The house prices have not jumped because of immigrants or foreign investors but because of the Unitary Plan. What we are doing is clearly not working. We need to do things differently. “Only 15 per cent of the people work in CBD, you are leaving the other 85 per cent out,” he pointed out. It was interesting to note that while John

Two more cases of measles at schools ■■By Nick Krause There have been two confirmed cases of measles at two local high schools. Auckland Regional Public Health Service clinical director Dr Julia Peters confirmed to the Times that it informed Macleans College and Pakuranga College last Friday that a student at the school had been confirmed with the highly contagious disease measles. It follows two cases reported at Brookby School and Wakaaranga schools last month (Times, July 4). Dr Peters said this week: “We have provided the school with advice and resources on what a staff member or student should do if they have been exposed to measles. Our advice is that anyone who has been in contact with the measles case and is not immune should stay home in quarantine until the end of this week.” Auckland Regional Public Health Service receives notifications of measles cases in the region from GPs and laboratories so the service can act to stop the spread of the disease. Pakuranga College confirmed it had one confirmed case. A statement sent to parents said Public Health Service advice is that those students who may have been in close contact with this person (same class, tutor class, sports teams, etc.) may have been exposed to the virus and, if they have not been vaccinated, should be quarantined for a few days. “We have been in touch with the families of all students who may have been in close contact. It is likely there will be more cases over the coming

weeks so it is important that all students get vaccinated. If your child has not been vaccinated, please get this done as soon as possible,” the newsletter said. Macleans College principal Steven Hargreaves confirmed he received a call last Friday from a doctor from the Public Health Service to confirm a case of measles with one of its students. A subsequent email from the doctor said: “We understand that a large majority of students and staff may have been exposed on the 1st and 2nd of August through sports, transport, assembly and classrooms. Therefore the quarantine period for exposure students and staff has commenced from Thursday 8th up to and including the 16th of August. To avoid any confusion I have therefore placed on the documents that the quarantine period is until the 17th August. Hargreaves said once they had this information from the doctor they emailed all families and staff. The essence of the email is that we have had a case of measles. It says the student has potentially been in close proximity to any number of students on campus and therefore it was important to stay away from school unless they had been immunised. “School has carried on as normal today (Monday). There are a small number of staff away as they are unsure of their immunity status so they are having a blood test to confirm before returning to school,” Hargreaves said. “There are a small percentage of students away but the campus looks as busy as usual.”

ational Party leader Simon Bridges has slapped down a potential alliance with the Greens and derided the growing number of people on unemployment benefit. Bridges shared his views at a public meeting chaired by National MP for Hunua Andrew Bayly, which was held at Maraetai Bowling Club last Thursday. The leader of the opposition held forum with the about 120 locals who braved a wet and wintery east Auckland night. Bridges started by re-enforcing party policy on business growth and confidence, the proposed establishment of a national cancer agency, the government’s neglect of dairy farmers, red tape in the construction and building industries (which he took almost a libertarian stance of suggesting “less government”, and the downward trend in international student arrivals. After hearing from local figures in the education and business sectors, the floor was opened to questions. Bridges took a pro stance on immigration when quizzed, but emphasised putting New Zealanders first when it came to employment opportunities. He conceded unemployment figures were at their lowest (3.9 per cent down

from 4.2 per cent in March) but tempered that by stating “there are now 15,500 more people on the dole “owing to a net migration rate of 58,400 people as of February this year”. He also said he was a big believer that those who “can work, should work”. The local hot-button topic of a new high school was raised and awakened the floor. Residents bemoaned their current predicament of having to send their children to high school in Papakura, due to its low decile status. The presence of a couple of detractors kept the debate lively. When asked if his party would ever consider forming an alliance with the Green party, Bridge’s comically suggested National were not a party interested in promoting “trendy, woke, cool causes” and referred to the Green’s “water-

melon status” being “green on the outside, and red on the inside”. Bridges emphasised National’s core ethos of investing in infrastructure and education by stating he wanted New Zealand children “to be the best in the world” and passed on the new school inquiry to Bayly who could not give a start date for the proposed, but unconfirmed project. The questioning ended with clarification sought on repair and replacement of Siberia Hill’s notoriously dangerous road seal and passing lane. Bill Cashmore, deputy mayor of Auckland, and Franklin ward representative, offered assurance that the project was “top of the list” which was met by general scepticism by the crowd, with one humorous quip of “you said that last year” coming from the backbenches.

Collective offer put up for primary school principals I

n view of the primary and intermediate school principals threatening to go on strike with regards to better working conditions and pay parity with secondary school principals, the Ministry of Education has presented New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) with a settlement offer to primary principals on Friday, August 9. The offer would see all primary principals receive pay parity with secondary principals on their base pay components (roll, staffing and decile payments), and a three per cent pay increase each year for three years. The offer provides most principals with a cumulative pay increase of about 11 per cent. The increase for the principals of our smallest schools (with fifty children or less) will be significantly higher. The offer lifts the salary of these principals to match the rate of pay for principals leading schools of 100 students or less. As a result a primary school principal’s minimum salary will be $104,000 by August 2021, an increase of over $16,500. Additional support staff will be provided for small schools to ensure there are at least two staff members in every school

Men of steel united in shaving for a cure Harris Road based steel company is out to better last year’s massive fundraising achievement. Local company United Steel and its parent group United Industries (UIL) are once again about to ‘Brave the Shave’. After a hugely successful workplace fundraiser last year when more than $35,000 was raised for the Cancer Society, group health & safety manager Ben Hammond, recently put a request out to the group asking staff to again get involved in the initiative. On Daffodil Day (August 30), a team from United Steel will step up and have their heads shaved. The first people to sign up were staff members Jane and Graham. Jane’s motivation for getting involved was to encourage awareness, which she says “is so important”, and cited the example of her family

member; “my sister in law had a double mastectomy and she’s been told that she’s now cancer free – She is so, so strong”. Graham said, “There have been a few people in my family who have been through Cancer; my aunty, my grandfather. Some have beat it; some have passed away from it. My grandfather kept quiet when he went through his battle”. Ben reiterated, “I think one of the big reasons why this campaign is so important is because early diagnosis matters. The sooner you get to the doctor, the better your chances are at beating cancer. Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga, says over the last 18 months his community signs promoting various public meetings have been defaced all across the Pakuranga electorate. “It would seem that this is the work of the same individual(s), as each sign is defaced in the same precise manner,” Brown says. “This usually involves the removal of my face and name from the sign, while leaving the meeting details intact. This indicates the person responsible has an issue with me personally, as opposed to the National Party or the issues involved. “I respect the absolute right of people to disagree with me or my views, but there are better ways to express these feelings. As the local MP I have a duty to represent all of my constituents whether they like me or not, and I take that job seriously.” Brown is asking whoever is responsible for the ongoing vandalism to stop and reach out to him if they have a view or concern they would like to discuss with him. “In addition to being as accessible as I can, I hold these public

meetings regularly to give people a chance to both hear my views on a particular issue and share their views with me.”

Is Local Government delivering for Aucklanders? East Auckland residents will no doubt have noticed the Auckland Council elections are in full swing with numerous candidate billboards in place across town. As the local-body elections in October draw near, we can rightly ponder whether Aucklanders are getting the standard of services we deserve from our council. A large part of my job, and the work done through my Botany Electorate Office, involves helping locals navigate the Council’s extensive bureaucracy to achieve a positive outcome with whatever issue they may have. Some of these are very public issues, such as trying to improve safety at Tarnica Park in Northpark. Others are smaller local issues such as getting overgrown trees cut or removing abandoned vehicles. Residents near Tarnica Park want safety measures installed at their local green space to reduce the instances of drinking, fighting and anti-social behaviour. It took a large effort from a group of fed-up local residents and myself by pressuring the Howick Local Board for many months to get traction and have these reasonable safety concerns addressed. Such local issues should be dealt with quickly and effectively and it’s disappointing when they aren’t. Sadly Aucklanders do not experience high levels of service to match our ever increasing rates bills. It’s been almost a decade since

the super-city Auckland Council was amalgamated into a single entity in late 2010. Residents may ask whether the Parliament did the right thing by merging the seven individual city and district Councils across Auckland into one giant organisation. We should also ask whether the CCO model works well. Auckland Transport, Watercare, and several other companies operate at arm’s length from elected representatives, often out of citizens’ grasp. Local Government reviews and restructures in New Zealand tend to go in ten-yearly cycles. It’s timely to ask whether we should review how the Council operates, whether amalgamation has resulted in the wins for local people that we were expecting, and if its current structure could be made more efficient. If we didn’t get it right, maybe it’s time we thought about how to fix it. Equally locals may well look at the representatives currently serving on the Howick Local Board and ask whether they have delivered, or if new leadership is needed in local government in East Auckland. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

In that spirit, Botany Town Centre is using its platform to help 10 local primary schools through its School Rewards campaign. Till August 18, every $50 spent at the centre is a point towards a shopper’s chosen school. A total of $9,000 will be given to local schools for school supplies. Libby Slaughter, deputy principal at Pakuranga Heights School, says she and the school will be spreading the message about the campaign through school assembly announcements, social media and school notices to encourage students’ families participate in the campaign and support their school. “We are a fantastic, vibrant, urban city school with a diverse range of students, cultures and needs. Recently, our school lost a classroom to a fire and we have been busy working to replace the classroom and lost resources. “Part of the rebuild has meant that we have lost precious field space, The Botany Fundraising

project is a wonderful fundraising opportunity for our school to ensure our students are still able to play a range of sports and have space to play in most weather conditions by funds going towards a large shade sail,” she says. “School Rewards would be one of our first big fundraising initiatives, which we hope will support us in improving facilities for our students.” Riverhills School hopes to provide sun protection for its students. Principal Sarah Allen says, “We always strive for opportunities to generate additional funding so we can continue to provide excellent

resources and learning opportunities for Riverhills students. Sun protection is an important goal that the school has prioritised.” Kerrie Hughes, centre manager at Botany Town Centre, says, “We’re looking forward to being able to use our platform to support schools with their fundraising needs. The School Rewards campaign is about more than just raising money – it’s about connecting with our local schools, listening to and understanding their needs. It’s about coming together as a community to collaborate and pool resources.” Customers will receive one token for every $50 they spend in the centre between August 5-18. After presenting their receipts to Customer Services, they can place their votes for their chosen school in the boxes provided for voting. Customers will then need to fill out an entry form to go in the draw to win a personal $1,000 shopping spree. Participating schools are Baverstock Oaks School, Botany Downs Primary, East Tamaki Primary, Elm Park School, Mission Heights Primary, Pakuranga Heights School, Point View School, Riverhills School, Shelly Park School and Willowbank School.

New park and ride “We have been monitoring the new T2 lane and have seen improvements to journey times, increased bus patronage and minimal impact to the travel times of general traffic along Pakuranga Road,” said Duncan Humphrey, AMETI programme director- Eastern Busway. “We have also been reviewing journey times across the wider east Auckland area, including Waipuna Bridge and Lagoon Drive and there has been very little impact on journey times for cars or buses as a result of construction.” Humphrey said this shows that people are taking advantage of the new options and we expect the new park and ride service to add to this. “Alongside providing more travel choice, these new transport measures are also focused on giving these local communities better access to public transport and increasing the amount of people that can travel along this busy

stretch of road during peak travel times and offering the opportunity for people to leave their cars at home,” said Humphrey. Auckland Transport is also working with residents, schools and businesses in local communities of Pakuranga and Howick, offering personalised journey plans that provide alternative options for people travelling around the area. This initiative has been running for three weeks and 500 people have signed up for the initiative so far. The $1.4 billion AMETI Eastern Busway will bring rapid transit travel options to one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas with a congestion-free, high frequency, Busway that will carry more than 7500 passengers during peak hours between new stations in Botany, Pakuranga, and Panmure and onwards to other parts of the region. The park and ride is planned to operate until 2021 when construction of Stage 1 is complete.

The new service will offer free, secure parking for more than 250 cars and will connect people with recently launched express shuttle services to Panmure Station and onwards to other parts of the region. Additional measures to minimise traffic disruption include maintaining all traffic lanes during peak travel times, live monitoring and adjustments of traffic signals and carrying out more disruptive work during off-peak travel times, holiday periods and weekends where possible. A T2 and bus lane was also launched on Pakuranga Road in June to improve journey times for buses and multi-occupant vehicles.

WWII veteran remembered World War II veteran Benjamin Alfred Smith passed away peacefully on August 10 in his 99th year. A service to celebrate Ben’s life was held at the Howick RSA yesterday. Smith - 203420 - served from 1941 to 1946 in 2nd Div NZEF finishing as a corporal. After the war Ben met and married the late Gwen, and they moved to Paeroa. Then he bought Mangakino Motors in the South Waikato in 1952. That year they lost everything in a devastating fire but they rebuilt the business and continued to run it between 1952 until 1965. Ben then bought Mangakino Buses which he operated until 1970 when he and Gwen and the

For the two days in June we set up camp in the Botany Town Carpark and over these days collected 245 pairs of jammies – not only from the general public but with great support from other clubs. Many thanks to Remuera, Pukekohe, Pakuranga-Panmure and Eden Epsom who dropped off big bags of jammies. Also thanks to Kamo Club who couriered a bag full to us.

When the Middlemore Foundation – the support Foundation for KidzFirst and South Auckland Health – approached our Lions Club for help to collect 40,000 pairs of pyjamas for those kids in need, we came up with the plan to promote this with our “Stuff a Campervan with Jammies” campaign. Member Clayton had a big campervan and a quick approach to the people who control that parking space at the Botany Town Centre provided us with a great central collection place. Recently I was sent a video of the protest in Hong Kong. In the video was a group of young people with masks over their faces, an older Western man there giving them advice and within the picture were both a British and an American flag with the young people. Here I am, thinking that the protest was by the young Hong Kongites against China for its extradition policy but now I know it is inspired by the West, for the West, using the young people in Hong Kong whom they have brainwashed, against their motherland China! If we were to do a bit of research into history, Hong Kong never belonged to the West or Britain. It was only ceded to Britain for 100 years because China lost in the Opium Wars. In the 100 years that Britain had the country, did it do anything to improve the lives of the people there? All the wealth from Hong Kong was for the benefit of UK and those that suck up to the West. That’s why Hong Kong is a real difficult place for many ordinary people, hardworking though they may be. The improvements to Hong Kong began after 1997 when HK was returned to China and under the one country-two systems administration. So to Britain, back off and leave Hong Kong back to her Mother. Bus driver a hero

I was running up to catch a 70x H&E bus on June 19 when I fell and hit my head on the road. The bus driver must have seen me in his rear vision mirror. He and a passenger picked me up and helped me on the bus. another passenger put some sticking plaster strips on my head and, as I had an appointment at Auckland Hospital, the driver diverted the bus to go by the hospital to drop me off where I spent the next week. The sending off of lock Scott Barrett just before half-time would have made no difference to the final result although the margin would have been closer. My pre-match warning that the All Blacks were creaking didn’t go down well with some readers, but it was the Aussies who performed like a well oiled machine.
