FIGHTING VIOLENCE
Waiting for Christmas
ACC investing $1.3m to assist Gandhi Nivas ■ BY FARIDA MASTER

n the last year they’ve turned around lives of 300 offenders involved in family violence. And 93 per cent of those haven’t reoffended. The unique community-police partnership of developing culturally specific early intervention through community collaboration for men bound by Police Safety Orders (PSO) in Counties Manukau, has delivered exceptional results. Since December 2014, perpetrators of family violence in East and South Auckland have been admitted to emergency housing at Gandhi Nivas on referral by police, following the issuing of a PSO — with support of a social worker at the time of intake. The idea behind the novel concept of providing temporary accommodation and counselling services for offenders by removing them from a volatile environment is to give them space to reflect on the consequences of their actions. While a number of Ministers who visited Gandhi Nivas thought it was a brilliant concept, none of them were willing to back the programme financially. Frustrated with the response, it took a terse letter from the co-founder of East Tamaki Healthcare Ranjna Patel to Mike Bush, Commissioner of New Zealand Police expressing her disappointment. That triggered some action. ➤ Turn to page 2

Heritage
Historic Smales cottage sold ■■By Nick Krause and Marianne Kelly
H
eritage listed Smales cottage in Botany has been sold and could become a childcare facility. It was the first time the ‘dairy manager’s cottage’ on the corner of Smales and Chapel roads had come up for sale in 40 years. Known as Smales cottage, the house is one of the few historic buildings left in the Flat Bush-East Tamaki area. It has protected heritage status over the exterior but not the interior and, as a consequence, the tender documents stipulate the property must be restored. It currently has no electricity, water or sewage connections. Howick historian Alan La Roche has a long association with the unoccupied cottage and says the old early settler appearance will be retained. He has been keeping it tidy and, until recently, hung clothes on the line to deter vandalism on
behalf of the property owner, the Archibald Somerville Trust. “I wanted to make sure this historic cottage was retained as part of our East Tamaki heritage,” he told the Times in September.“There are few historic buildings left in Flat Bush-East Tamaki. I arranged for the building to be repainted and I did some repairs.” Initially, Mr La Roche says, the cottage was part of the Reverend Gideon Smales farm from 1852 to 1894. He lived at “Hampton Park” which includes the historic St John’s Church in East Tamaki Road. The area is now an historical reserve administered by Auckland Council. The Smales-Chapel Road cottage was built in about 1894 by Ambury and English and Company as accommodation for the company’s dairy factory manager, Mr La Roche says. The cottage used to have a large block of land, but with the widened Smales and Chapel Roads there is less land. Tim Irvine, branch

manager at Barfoot & Thompson’s Ponsonby office which conducted the sale, confirmed the building sold last month after six weeks on the
market. Mr Irvine could not reveal how much the building was purchased for and would only say a local developer/business
owner had bought the old home. Asked if he knew what the property was to be used for, he said “possibly a childcare centre”. It’s not the first historic building in the area to go this way. The 117-year-old Guy Homestead on Ti Rakau Drive was on the market for 10 years. JP Singh and business partner Kuljeet Singh paid close to the $3.5 million asking price for the property early in 2014. The Piccolo Park farmthemed child care centre was the culmination of 15 months’ work on the Guy Homestead Restoration Project which opened in May last year to cater for 120 youngsters with a staff of around 17.
ACC funds $1.3m for Gandhi Nivas ➤➤From page 1 Mrs Patel, who is on the Counties Manukau South Asian Police Advisory Board, initially stepped in to fund the pathbreaking initiative. However, it was on the condition that a government agency would take ownership of it once it had been successfully launched. Seeing the tremendous value the initiative was bringing, Mr Bush picked up the gauntlet and knocked on ACC doors. The police work in partnership with ACC to stop family harm. Fortunately ACC felt their involvement with Gandhi Nivas would align with their suite of injury prevention initiatives to reduce family violence, and came to the table to fund the project. The signing of the agreement between Gandhi Nivas, New Zealand Police and ACC was held at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Flat Bush last Wednesday. ACC will be investing $1.3 million over the next three years to assist with the provision of counselling expertise needed to help the perpetrators examine their actions and help them to change their behaviour. Emma Powell, ACCs head of Injury Prevention, Partnership and Delivery said that thanks to the commissioner’s emails,

they’ve opened the side door to something truly incredible. “It’s a significant step in changing the landscape in terms of innovation that is spot-on. Taking people’s needs and having the foresight to come up with a solution that offers real hope and not just wishful thinking is priceless,” she said. Mr Bush admitted to pushing a few buttons since he was aware of ACC’s willingness to do something tangible around family violence and helping the wider sector. “This is an example of what we need to replicate right across the country,” he said. Mrs Patel spoke highly of the social workers and counsellors at Gandhi Nivas who rendered their service free of charge until she did a couple of fundraisers to help them with basic funds.
Gandhi Nivas was initially set up to cater originally for the South Asian Community but is now providing counselling and support for all ethnicities. More than 65 per cent of those using the services belong to ethnicities other than South Asian. ➤➤In April this year District Commander John Tims presented Ranjna Patel with a Challenge Coin to acknowledge the groundbreaking project that Counties Manukau Police entered in the Problem Oriented Police (POP) Awards. ➤➤In 2014/15 financial year ACC paid over $47million on more than 23,000 assaultrelated claims. The economic cost associated with family violence is estimated to be between $4.1 billion and $7b per year and rising.

Service station burglaries linked? ■■By Scott Yeoman scott@times.co.nz Where vehicles were stolen
P
olice say they cannot rule out a link between the four service station burglaries in Pakuranga last week. The three stolen cars used in the aggravated burglaries were taken from and dumped at similar locations in close proximity to each other and all the offences occurred in the early hours of the morning at 24 hour service stations – three of them on Pakuranga Road and one on Reeves Road. Cigarettes and cash were targeted. The vehicles used in the burglaries – which occurred within four days of each other – were stolen from Howick and Half Moon Bay and were later dumped in Bucklands Beach and Mellons Bay. The officer in charge of the Counties Manukau Police major crime team, detective senior sergeant Albie Alexander, is appealing to residents in those areas to be vigilant and has asked that any suspicious activity be reported to police immediately. He told the Times that police cannot rule out a link between the four offences. The first of the four burglaries occurred at about 4.20am on December 5 (Monday) at the BP service station on Pakuranga Road. Three offenders smashed their way into the store and made off with cigarettes and a number of other items. The silver Mazda Atenza they used in the burglary was stolen from Howick and was

later dumped in Bucklands Beach. The sole service station attendant on duty at the time was unharmed in the incident. The next morning (Tuesday, December 6), shortly before 2am, the Caltex service station on Pakuranga Road was ram-raided. The red Mazda Familia used by the offenders had been stolen from Half Moon Bay and was dumped in Mellons Bay following the incident. A staff member at Caltex told the Times that the car rammed through the doors – there were no bollards protecting the doors – and two offenders stole cigarettes and two tills. The employee on duty ran out the back and was unhurt. Two more service stations were then burgled last Thursday morning. A white Subaru Legacy stolen from Howick was used in both and was later dumped in Bucklands Beach on the corner of
Macleans Road and Bleakhouse Road, not far from where the other two stolen cars were left. The Gull service station on Reeves Road was hit first, shortly before 1.40am, with the three offenders using a hammer to break in. A Gull spokesman told the Times that there was one staff member on duty at the time and that the offenders smashed through glass to get in. They stole cigarettes. The staff member managed to get to a safe room, the spokesman said, and was left shaken but unhurt. He said the Gull service station on Reeves Road had now installed a new cigarette dispensing system following the burglary, so only one packet comes out at a time for future protection. About five minutes after the Gull service station burglary, the three offenders in the stolen Subaru arrived at the Z service station on
Pakuranga Road and again used a hammer to break in. Z’s corporate communications manager Jonathan Hill told the Times from Wellington that the offenders got away with a small amount of tobacco. “They smashed their way into the site. The person [on shift] got to the secure part of the site,” he said. The staff member was unhurt and was offered counselling. Mr Hill said the Z service station on Pakuranga Road basically carries no cash on the premises. The company has introduced a range of measures in a bid to minimise burglaries, he said. “We’ve implemented a programme of increased security over the last 12 months costing millions of dollars making [burglary] of Z sites unattractive. “It’s very disappointing this has happened.” Detective senior sergeant Albie
Alexander said police are looking for information regarding the movements of the three stolen vehicles around those times last week, as well as information on any suspicious activity around the locations where the cars were stolen and dumped. “Further information regarding suspicious cigarette sales is also sought as the property stolen must be being disposed of by the suspects,” Mr Alexander said. “Persons identified as having received the stolen goods will be dealt with as the law allows.” He said the Counties Manukau Police major crime team is currently reviewing the incidents. ➤➤Any information can be phoned into Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or Counties Manukau Police on (09) 261 1300. - Additional reporting by Nick Krause and Laura Brookes

Surveillance software to stamp out drive-off fuel thefts ■■By Nick Krause Local man Boon Yang Kueh is looking to taking his smart surveillance software system to the rest of Auckland, the country and Australia. Boon, from Botany, and his team of a dozen software, firmware and hardware designers and engineers from New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia, have spent years developing their Smartveillance Licence Plate Recognition (SV LPR) solution, a system designed to prevent fuel theft and drive-offs from petrol stations. “In New Zealand, petrol stations lose millions of dollars to drive-off fuel thefts each year,” said Mr Kueh,

The technology is working too. Since March, 37 stolen vehicles and drive-offs have been detected at the Mangere Caltex station and 27 at Western Springs including one vehicle with stolen plates. Impressive lists of alerts and detections have also been recorded in other stations. The SV LPR technology has been used to beef up security at shopping malls as well as manage hotel carparks. It has also been successfully adapted for ticketless parking management at the Victory Convention Centre in Beaumont Street, Freemans Bay which has more than 350 carparks, of various categories of usage. Additionally, the smart surveillance solution
has also been used for people counting and monitoring activities of interest such as illegal parking around places of high security, unauthorised movement of objects, parameter breeching, directional traffic flow etc. In Malaysia, the same technology has been deployed as part of the “safe city strategy”. “It’s proving good for the police and good for the community,” Mr Kueh said. “We position the solution not only to prevent crime but also at very competitive market pricing” Maxinz is poised to take its technology across the Tasman where he feels he will be able to achieve critical mass.

Students approached by strangers in Farm Cove ■■By Scott Yeoman scott@times.co.nz

The Wednesday morning incident happened on Butley Drive in Farm Cove on December 7. Photo supplied Google Maps
W
akaaranga School and Farm Cove Intermediate have sent out messages to reassure parents following reports of students being approached and spoken to by strangers in Farm Cove last week. The Times revealed last Thursday evening that police were investigating a report of a young school girl being approached by a stranger in Farm Cove on Wednesday morning. The girl was walking to school alone on Butley Drive towards Wakaaranga School when a man in a dark black/blue car crossed over the road and pulled up beside her. Inspector Wendy Spiller confirmed to the Times last Thursday that the incident had been reported to police and that they were investigating it. According to the report received by police – the details of which were also posted on Facebook by the mother of the girl – the man asked the girl if she wanted to get into his car. The Wakaaranga School student ran away from the road and hid until the stranger had moved on. Last Friday morning, Farm Cove Intermediate – which is also located on Butley Drive – sent out a message saying there had been another reported incident of a student being spoken to by a stranger on Thursday morning, but that no inappropriate comments were made and there was no immediate cause for concern. “Yesterday we called the police when one of our students who was walking to school was spoken to by a man who was also walking,” the message said. “No inappropriate comments were made. There is no immediate concern over the incident. We were just being very cautious in the light of recent news reports.” There have been reports of at least four different youths being approached by strangers in
west Auckland over the past few weeks and on November 17 an 11-year-old boy was abducted in Ranui and sexually assaulted. Police also issued a “seasonal” warning to local schools about safety around strangers last month. Wakaaranga School sent out a letter to parents and caregivers last Friday afternoon regarding the reported incidents. “As you may be aware one of our Wakaaranga students was approached by a man on Wednesday morning and asked to get into his car,” the message from principal Brent Jenkin said. “Fortunately, the student reacted appropriately and ran off safely. The matter was reported to the police by the family concerned and the matter is being investigated by the police.” In the letter, Mr Jenkin also addressed speculation surrounding the second reported incident on the Thursday. “...the police have advised us that they do not believe this to be a related incident. The school has acted as quickly as possible to get the facts of this incident from the police and we will keep all parents and caregivers up to date.” He asked parents to remind their children of the “keeping ourselves safe” programme that is taught at school. “The key messages to reinforce with your kids is that if something occurs they first need to run away into a nearby house/safe location to get help and secondly to tell a teacher, parent or another adult
immediately.” The Times spoke with the principals of both schools last Friday and they emphasised that they were in contact with police and were working to reassure the school community. Meanwhile, the mother of the Wakaaranga School girl said on Facebook last Wednesday that her daughter usually walks to school with a few children, but was walking alone that morning. She said, fortunately, her daughter is aware of “stranger danger” and managed to escape safely. “We have informed the police of the incident who then followed up with an interview. She was able to give them some information and they are taking the incident seriously.” The mother, who the Times has chosen not to name, asked other parents to please warn their children to be alert and not to talk to strangers. “It is very scary that something like this is happening so close to home and I hope that this man does not prey on any more children.” Police said the male who approached the girl on Wednesday morning was described as being dark skinned, wearing sun glasses, having long black hair past his shoulders – hair was straight in some places and curly in others, eyes that looked “bluey” in colour through the glasses he wore, was clean shaven, and was wearing a red-coloured Adidas t-shirt with a large white Adidas logo in the centre of the shirt. The male had rotten teeth, “as in really yellow”, the description
Our Party and our country have been With through a lot Jami-Lee this past week. Ross We have lost an amazing man, National Party Leader, and Prime Minister, John Key. But we have gained an exceptional duo of expertise and talent with Bill English and Paula Bennett taking on the political leadership of New Zealand. Having been elected as leader and deputy leader of the National Party, they have now been sworn in as Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. I am proud to have been a part of the National caucus for almost six years now, serving the Botany electorate. I have worked under John Key throughout that time. He has been an inspiration to the National Party and a much-loved public figure. I have also been fortunate to have worked with Bill. As a Whip and a Member of Parliament, my role has enabled me to work closely with the leadership. Bill English has demonstrated exceptional capabilities as the Minister for Finance where he has worked in a dedicated fashion alongside John Key. Through some incredibly challenging times that New Zealand has faced, Bill has been right there by JK’s side. These include the global financial crisis, the Canterbury earthquakes, and knocking the public service into shape. He has shown excellent skill in navigating the country safely through both financial disasters and natural disasters. Our new Prime Minister has been the driving force of many Government policy changes, such as social investment and the Better Public Services programme. As the Minister for Finance he has driven our Government agencies to provide better outcomes for New Zealanders without drastic budget increases. He has also championed a model of Government where we identify ways to invest in social services as the front end to ensure better long term outcomes for those most in need. Getting an education, a job, and a life of greater opportunities has been his driving force behind government economic and social policy. The past week has seen a very large shift in the political leadership of the country. But we have managed to deliver both continuity and contrast with the election of Bill English and Paula Bennett. I look forward to continuing to work as part of a stable National Government, led now by Bill English. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Man charged with ‘indecent act’ at beach ■■By Scott Yeoman scott@times.co.nz
A
man from Pakuranga was this week charged with one count of committing an indecent act. Police interviewed the 51-year-old on Tuesday and charged him in relation to an incident that occurred at Howick Beach on November 24. The man is due to appear in the Manukau District Court. Police said on Tuesday that they were still investigating other incidents at east Auckland beaches and were following promising lines of enquiry. “We continue to urge beachgoers to be vigilant and report all suspicious activity to police immediately.” Four indecent act incidents have been reported in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach and at Eastern Beach and Lloyd Elsmore Park in recent weeks. The two incidents that occurred in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach were on November 24. It is not yet known if the Pakuranga man’s charge is in relation to one of those incidents or a different one. On that day, police received two calls of a similar
nature regarding possibly two different males doing indecent acts while watching female beach users in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach. The men were observed by female beach users attempting to hide behind rocks or bushes while carrying out “an indecent act”. Police patrolled the Mellons Bay area following the reports but were unable to locate either male. Inspector Jared Pirret said at the time that it was unlikely that the same offender was responsible for both incidents as the descriptions supplied by the victims were very different [see side-bar]. He said that on both occasions, when confronted by the victims, the males did not attempt to touch or talk to the victims and there was no attempt to abduct or coerce the victim in any way. Following the incidents, Mr Pirret said that women should not be using Mellons Bay Beach alone. “I would recommend that all females using the beach do not do so alone and if they are aware of any suspicious males or observe this type of behaviour to take a photograph of the offender if practical and call the police,” he said. “A good description, direction
of travel, and mode of transport (vehicle or on foot) is essential to apprehending these offenders.” But he stressed the importance of public safety. “Under no circumstances confront these males.” Two further incidents were then reported – the third at another beach and the fourth at a popular park. Inspector Jared Pirret said that on November 29 at about 4.40pm, a male was reported hiding in the bushes at Eastern Beach carrying out an indecent act. The offender was described as Caucasian in his early 30s and inspector Pirret said police were looking at the possibility of it being linked to one of the November 24 incidents at Mellons Bay Beach. Then on December 2 at around 6.30pm, a male exposed himself to a victim as she walked through Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga. He was described as 25-30 years old and as having a medium build and short, dark coloured hair. Mr Pirret said the man was reportedly wearing a red coloured football-style shirt and light khaki pants. He said last week that patrols had been stepped up and that
police patrol partners (Crime Watch and the Asian Council on Reducing Crime) were also combing the beaches and parks. Mr Pirret has said that there is unfortunately a “seasonal trend” in which police see this type of offending occurring in the warmer weather and with more people using the beaches.

On the evening of Sunday, December 11, Coastguard operations manager Ray Burge was driving past Waiomanu Bay, east of Maraetai Beach, with his family when he noticed a man in the water frantically waving his arms. Mr Burge, off duty, stopped his car and ran down to the beach, where he was met by three small children who told him that the man in the water, to whom they were related, needed help. Ray made a quick call to the Coastguard Operations Centre, before swimming out to the man who had drifted about 200m out to sea, and was struggling. After bringing the man ashore and summoning an ambulance, Mr Burge’s family found out from the children their mother was also in the water, and that the man – her partner – had tried swimming out to her. $5k for school from Caltex Children from nine Auckland schools will receive funding toward new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects after receiving a share of $100,000 raised by Caltex customers in this year’s ‘Fuel Your School’ initiative. Willowbank School is one of the schools that will receive up to $5000 for a variety of STEM projects. Willowbank School science teacher Tina Joshua-Bargh says the students and staff of Willowbank School are excited to be awarded the Caltex grant in support of our project, ‘Growing Green!’ “We plan to continue our ‘Enviro School’ learning journey by building a Greenhouse from sustainable materials in an easily accessible area of the school,” she says. “Our students will lead every aspect of the planning and building of the greenhouse and will further their learning by investigating which plants to grow and how best to grow them.” Students will also provide Auckland Council (Botany/Howick) with seedlings and young plants to Greenmount Park, ensuring that this area becomes a prominent area, regularly visited by our community, she says. Jeremy Clarke of Caltex says the `Fuel Your School’ programme is a reflection of Caltex’s mission to encourage New Zealand children to engage with technology and the sciences. “Caltex thanks every customer who helped bring this project to life for the second year running. STEM is an area of education that Caltex feels particularly passionate about, with its potential to change people’s lives for the better.

ver summer many New Zealanders are at the beach, playing or watching sports, enjoying festivals or just relaxing with families and friends. It’s a time for rest and relaxation Christmas shopping (which saw New Zealanders spend a record $6 billion in December 2015) along with end of year parties means we generate around 30 per cent more waste nationally during the festive season. In seaside and tourist areas there is a massive 400 per cent increase in waste and most of it can be recycled if people put it into the recycling bin rather than the rubbish bin. Drinks sales increase to three times above normal levels and whilst recycling may double over this period, there are a lot of glass, cans and plastic bottles not being recycled particularly away from home. The New Zealand recycling rate for drinks containers is over 69 per cent but it would increase significantly if every bar, restaurant and entertainment venue recycled every bottle and can during this busy period. If you are enjoying a take away pizza most councils will recycle these boxes too if you put them in your kerbside collections. And more than 55 per cent of New Zealanders now have access to drop

Local schools collected cans to help people in need at Christmas
O
ver 67,000 cans have been collected in the inaugural Wattie’s Cans for Good campaign which took place in November. More than 200 schools from around the country took part collecting cans to help The Salvation Army stock up its foodbanks to assist New Zealanders in need over the busy Christmas period. Heinz Wattie’s generously donated additional cans taking the number to over 92,000 cans. “Household budgets are stretched by rising living costs, especially for rent and power. With Christmas around the corner, food parcels are a great way to help reduce the stress on families who are doing it tough”, says Major Pamela Waugh, The Salvation Army’s Secretary for Social Services. Participation and feedback from local schools has been overwhelming according to Heinz Wattie’s communications manager Tina Wong. “We wanted to deliver something that was easy for schools, pupils and teachers. Wattie’s Cans for Good went beyond other campaigns combining collecting for charity with a creative competition and a set of teacher based resource sheets designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, team-based experience,” says Wong. The Salvation Army has been visiting
schools as part of the initiative, talking to children about how they can make a direct and real difference to those in need in their local community. According to Julie Henderson, Principal of Eastern Hutt School, Lower Hutt, initiatives like Wattie’s Cans for Good are a great way to involve all the students and their families in a project. “It helps develop the awareness of others in our community and generates a positive spirit when we all combine our efforts to help others in need,” says Henderson.
Participating schools also had the opportunity to create something out of their donated cans, be it a picture or shape made out of cans or a low level can-structure. ✦ The winning schools with most impressive and creative designs were Eskdale School (Napier), Belmont Primary School (Auckland), St Mary’s School (Foxton), Marina View School (Auckland) and Kenakena School (Paraparaumu) will receive a $500 voucher to put towards art or school supplies. www.watties.co.nz/ cansforgood

10 things NOT to feed your dog at BBQs ✦ Ham ✦ Onions ✦ Garlic ✦ Sauces ✦ Corn Cobs ✦ Chocolate ✦ Grapes ✦ Cheese
Summer’s here, it’s barbecue season and there’s no bigger mooch around the barbecue than your dog – and how can you resist those begging eyes? Well, for the sake of your beloved pet, you need to toughen up and keep the leftovers away from prying noses, says Tracey Moore, manager, Animal Management for Auckland Council. “Garlic, onions and sausages are key to a successful people barbecue, but potential death traps for dogs.” Here’s their top 10 human foods you should NOT feed your dog at the barbie: ✦ Alcohol of any sort ✦ Cooked bones
We love our dogs and want them to be well but we must remember dogs aren’t people and shouldn’t be fed people-food. Photo supplied
Tracey Moore also cautions party hosts not to leave the rubbish within reach of mooching dogs. “Not only will they make a mess, but they could eat cooked bones, corn cobs, plastic food wrap or kebab skewers that have been thrown away,” she says. “Dogs aren’t people and shouldn’t be fed people-food. They also shouldn’t be encouraged to mooch around people who are eating, but should be fed a normal dog diet at their regular eating time.”

CROQUE MONSIEUR This extremely extravagant ham + cheese toastie could only have been dreamt up by the French with all its culinary fabulousness. Dating as far back as 1910, this rich cheesy little beauty has had several versions over the years but I am partial to the classic. To make the béchamel sauce heat in the microwave 1 litre of full milk with 1 bay leaf, 2 whole cloves and a small peeled white onion. In a saucepan over medium heat melt 90g butter, add 90g plain flour whisking continuously for 2-3 mins until it becomes sand like in colour. Gradually add in the strained milk whisking continuously. Add a pinch of nutmeg and whisk occasionally for 12-15 mins until thick and smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in 300g grated gruyere cheese season to taste. Place into a bowl, cover
directly with plastic wrap and set aside to cool a little before you refrigerate for 30 mins. Preheat the grill to medium-high and line a tray with tinfoil. Take 12 slices of thick white bread [crusts on or off your choice] and brush one side with melted butter. Place under the grill butter-side up until golden and crisp. Now turn them over and spread them all with Dijon mustard and 2 tbsp of béchamel sauce. Top 6 pieces with 2 thin slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham and 2-3 tbsp of grated gruyere, pop under the grill for a minute or so till the cheese has melted. Now top with remaining bread toasted side up and finish with a generous amount of béchamel sauce over the top – it’s ok if it drips down the sides! Pop it back under the grill for

BRUSCHETTA WITH ROASTED NECTARINES, HAM + BUFFALO MOZZARELLA Beautiful in season nectarines are the perfect match with ham. Pair it up with the creamy texture of buffalo mozzarella and the chargrilled crunch of bruschetta this makes a wonderful light supper or snack. Preheat your oven to 160C and line a tray with baking paper. Cut 6 nectarines in half and remove the cores, place cut side up on the tray. Sprinkle lightly with brown sugar, a squeeze of lemon or verjuice and bake till soft and they start to caramelise. Grill on the bbq over medium flame 3 generous slices of sour dough bread till both sides have distinct chargrilled marks. Remove and lightly rub one side with peeled garlic, season and drizzle with olive oil. Top with 2-3 slices of buffalo mozzarella, 2 roasted nectarine halves, leftover Hellers Christmas ham cut into fine strips and some torn fresh tarragon leaves.
H.A.L.T [HAM, AVOCADO, LETTUCE + TOMATO SANDWICH] A twist on the traditional B.L.A.T! I just love to fry thick slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham in a little butter plus oil till the edges caramelise – very moreish

indeed! Start by slicing a fresh ciabatta roll in half and spreading the bottom with a small amount of good quality tomato chutney and the top firstly with Dijon mustard and then a good-quality mayonnaise. To the bottom add shredded iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced red onion, ripe tomato and avocado slices. Season at this stage and squeeze a little lemon juice over the avocado. In a heavy based frying pan melt a little butter and oil till bubbling then place in 2 thick slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham [make sure you get some fatty bits from the edge they fry up deliciously!]. Fry both sides till golden and the edges start to caramelise then place directly into your prepared roll. Eat immediately!
POTATO SALAD With CHRISTMAS HAM + GREEN GODDESS DRESSING Green Goddess is a delicious American dressing that dates back supposedly to 1920. Heavenly creamy, herby and fragrant it will keep well in a jar for up to a week in your fridge. Boil 1kg of waxy potatoes [little gourmets and jersey bennies are ideal] skin on or scrubbed till just tender. Drain, cool slightly, cut in half then place into a large bowl. To make the green goddess dressing place in a powerful blender or food processor – 1 ripe avocado; 3 tbsp each of coriander leaves; chopped chives and Italian parsley leaves; 10 large basil leaves; 1 tbsp tarragon leaves; 2 spring onions roughly chopped [dark green ends removed]; 1 garlic clove peeled; 2 tbsp liquid honey; Juice of 1 lemon; ½ cup buttermilk – you may have to add a little more to thin the dressing if needed. Finish with sea salt to taste and a twist of cracked pepper.
Add a generous amount of dressing to the cooked potatoes and fold through gently. You can either slice a few pieces of your leftover Hellers Christmas ham onto each serving plate and add the green goddess potato on the side or finely cut it into strips to add directly into your potato salad and serve.
CAMPFIRE ONE PAN FRY-UP Whether you’re away on your summer holidays and have leftover Christmas ham or at home, this quick and simple recipe is easy on the dishes and makes an awesome meal for any time of the day! Over an open campfire, on top of your bbq or at home on the stove place a heavy based fry-pan over medium heat. Add a little oil plus butter and 1 sliced red onion, cook till tender. Add 2 squashed garlic cloves [with the back of a wooden spoon] and 2-3 large slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham roughly chopped. Fry till it starts to caramelise then add 1 tin of chopped canned tomatoes, a pinch of ground cumin, a few fresh thyme sprigs and ½ sprig of fresh rosemary [dried is fine if you are camping!]. Cook for 10 mins then add 1 can of drained cooked cannellini beans and a large knob of butter. Stir through gently and cook a further 5 mins. Now make a few gaps as the sauce would have reduced a little and crack in 2-4 eggs. If you are at home you can pop it into a moderate oven or put the cover down on your bbq till the yolks are just starting to set. If you are sitting by the campfire then simple cover in tinfoil and carefully check after 5 mins or so. Serve with crusty, buttered, chargrilled sourdough, top the dish with shaved parmesan, ½ lemon zest and freshly chopped Italian parsley – only if you have them handy in your camp chillibin!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Krispie Treat Christmas Trees These Christmas tree rice krispies are super fun and cute to make! You can really use any lollies you want as ornaments. I like having the kiddos help me with these because they really can’t mess up. These are great for parties, baking sales or just a fun treat for the kids at Christmas. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS ✦ 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal ✦ 3 tbsp butter ✦ 300 grams marshmallows ✦ Green food colouring ✦ 12 miniature Reese’s Cups ✦ 1/3 cup M&M Minis ✦ 12 candy stars ✦ 3 cups icing sugar ✦ 3 tbsp milk ✦ 3 tbsp corn syrup DIRECTIONS
T
his easy recipe is a great way to enjoy the many benefits of quinoa, which contains more protein than any other grain as well as all eight amino acids essential to your health.
PEAR AND CRANBERRY QUINOA SALAD Prep time: 10 minutes, Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 to 6
INGREDIENTS ✦ 1 cup quinoa ✦ 2 cups water and stir until cereal is well coated. Allow to set about 4 minutes. Butter your hands and form mixture into cone shapes. Place cones onto prepared pan. Allow to cool and firm up for several hours. Mix powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup in a bowl until smooth. Transfer to piping bag or zippered bag to pipe onto cookies. Pipe like a garland around each tree. Space M&M Minis like ornaments onto the garland. Pipe a dab of icing on top of tree to act as glue and attach star. Place a Reese’s upside down on pan. Pipe icing on it and place tree on top. Allow to set before serving. Source: www.raininghotcoupons.com
✦ 1/2 tsp. salt ✦ 1/4 olive oil ✦ Juice of 1 lemon ✦ 1 garlic clove, finely chopped ✦ Salt and pepper, to taste ✦ 2 pears, unpeeled, cored and thinly sliced ✦ 2 cups spinach, washed ✦ 1 cup fresh cranberries (washed), or frozen (thawed) ✦ 1/2 cup nuts, your choice (pecans, walnuts, etc.)
DIRECTIONS Rinse the quinoa under cold water and drain well. In a frying
pan, bring water and salt to a boil. Add the quinoa. Cover and cook over low heat for 13 to 15 minutes, until the quinoa has absorbed the water and is transparent. Let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and let cool to room temperature. In a small bowl, whip oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper to make the dressing. In a large salad bowl, gently mix the quinoa, pear slices, spinach leaves, cranberries and nuts. Add dressing, stir well and serve.

To help in forming the cone shape, I took the foam or cardboard that comes in a waffle cone pack to protect the cones and cut it to make a form to help shape the trees. Line a cookie sheet with baking paper. In a medium to large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add enough food colouring to make mixture dark green (it will lighten when cereal is added). Remove from heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal

2016 at Highland Park has been a busy year. The centre has been a prolonged building site which in turn has seen the completion of new offices, new retail shops & refurbishments, completion of new undercover walkways and new service providers such as Mankelow Accounts & Nandish Chiropractic. During this construction period we were grateful for the positive support you as customers gave us despite the disruption in the immediate areas. From the many comments received we are confident that the improvements we have made have and will continue to improve your shopping experience. January 2017 will see the start of the relocation of the Post Boxes to the inside rear entrance area of Paper Plus. Highland Park Jewellers will complete a makeover during this time as well and a new retail shop will replace the current Post Box area which is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete with, we are hoping, little disruption for you our customers. There has been much talk and interest in the proposed undercover Pop-Up retail and Market area which will launch in February. We see this as a very community-minded, meeting and promotion area and will encourage organisations to utilise it. Finally we wish to extend to you our customers hearty Christmas Celebrations with a safe transition into 2017 and look forward to your continued patronage at Highland Park Shopping Centre.
To you our valued customers,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Flying solo isn’t so bad. Really
A
re you spending the holidays alone this year? Whether or not it’s by choice, there are many ways you can make the most of a solo holiday season. First, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate Christmas by yourself. Just let your friends and family know that you’d rather be alone and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about your decision. But if you don’t actually want to spend the holidays on your own, remember that being alone doesn’t have to feel lonely! There are a number of different ways to meet people over the holidays.
✦ Go to a singles event or a religious service ✦ Attend a Christmas event in your community (activities, shows, dances) or a holiday dinner that’s open to the public (check out hotels, motels, pubs and night clubs) ✦ Invite neighbours or acquaintances who are also spending the holidays alone over for brunch ✦ Go outside — walking, beach activities (active or passive) or the local fishing,
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to spend Christmas on your own. Photo supplied bowls, tennis or golf clubs are a good way to meet people
✦ Donate your time — volunteering is a wonderful way to spread joy all around you during this season of love and sharing! If you’re going to be spending time alone, you might as well treat yourself. Catch a last-minute flight somewhere, hit the spa to relax and recharge, spend some time on a pet project or whip up your favourite dessert — you can do whatever you please without worrying about anyone but yourself. Merry Christmas!
10 gift ideas to impress the gamer in your life Ah, video games. Is the world of consoles and controllers uncharted territory for you? If you have a gamer on your holiday shopping list, have a look at the following gift ideas for inspiration. First things first: find out what gaming platform he or she uses and make sure that the gift you choose is compatible. 1. A gift card for a video game store, a prepaid game card or a subscription to an online gaming service (these unlock online multiplayer gaming and access to exclusive content like additional features) 2. A new game (find out what they like and ask an employee at your local game store for suggestions based on that) 3. A high-quality wireless headset with microphone 4. A new console (budget permitting) 5. For a PC gamer, a gaming keyboard or mouse 6. A steering wheel for racing games
Make sure you find you find out what gaming platform they use first. Photo supplied 7. Extra controllers to let more friends in on the fun 8. A charging station for wireless controllers 9. Books about the video game industry (the history of video games or a cult game encyclopaedia, for instance) 10. Clothing (t-shirts, slippers, scarves) or other merchandise (figurines, plush toys, key chains, flash drives, beer steins, coffee mugs) related to their favourite games or characters.

Christmas Walkthrough bound to impress
I
t’s all about celebration, and bringing the true meaning of Christmas to the community. That’s the motivation behind Eastgate Christian Centre’s annual Christmas Walkthrough, and if the lines out the front door are anything like they’ve been in previous years, this year’s production is bound to be a hit with the locals. With around 6000 people attending the event each year, the Christmas Walkthrough is the biggest community event hosted annually by Eastgate Christian Centre. Titled The Frost Files: A Christmas Mystery, the production tells the story of a lonely Wiseman who misses the clues about where Jesus is being born, and ends up in the office of Detective Frost, desperate to find his way with the one clue he remembers – something about a star. Four dynamic and creative multimedia sets pull together the 25-minute production – a detective’s office, a Stars in their Eyes television set, a make-shift bakery to double as a star in the yeast, according to the uncanny Detective, and the traditional nativity set. When the walk-through is over, staff members Sam Taylor and Naveena Joll say the place will still be buzzing with entertainment – tea, coffee, face painting, snacks, and a photo booth for guests to dress up and grab a photo.

Three tips to help you cope with Boxing Day sales Inveterate bargain hunters adore Boxing Day sales. If you’re thinking about making the most of all those great discounts, be sure to read this little guide.
Eastgate Christian Centre’s annual production attracts thousands. It’s a production that involves more than 250 volunteers, costs approximately $20-25k each year, is partly funded by the Howick Local Board and is completely free for the community. Team member Erin Lawson, who has been involved in the Christmas Walkthrough for 10 years, says she’s most looking forward to sneaking out from backstage and witnessing the buzz of excitement in the crowd. Filled with interactive entertainment and humour to amuse the whole family, Mr Taylor says the show is suitable for people of all ages, and will be a fantastic night out for families. “People get so distracted away from the true meaning of Christmas by the commercialism of it,” says Mr Taylor. “We wanted to come up with a creative idea to relate with people and focus on the

Christmas story as well.” He hopes it will bring about “a realisation that Christmas isn’t just about Santa Claus, and that everyone is able to connect with Jesus”, as the Wiseman eventually does. It’s wheelchair-friendly too, so guests who are unable to make it up the stairs for the first scene are able to watch it play out on a television screen, and join the crowd for scene two. Now in its 11th year, Mr Taylor says the community event is a highlight on the calendar. ✦ The Frost Files: A Christmas Mystery runs nightly from 7-10pm on Sunday December 18 to Friday December 23 at Eastgate Christian Centre, 5 Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga. Entry and all activities are free.
1. Do some window shopping first A few days before the Boxing Day sales begin, visit your favourite stores and list the items you’d like to buy at a discount. Of course, the store staff might have some privileged information about the upcoming sales. You could get some great tips if you ask a few questions. 2. Be well-prepared Be ready, because you’re bound to face endless lines and frenzied customers. Ask a friend to go along with you for company. Bring some water and snacks. Wear comfortable clothes, and make sure your phone battery is fully charged. 3. Resist impulse buying You may be tempted to buy just about anything when faced with dramatic discounts. Three-for-one sales can be pretty compelling, after all. That said, try to resist the urge to purchase items you don’t really need.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Kiwi men want love for Christmas
A
new survey from dating site EliteSingles has revealed that, while Kiwi men and women both hate being single at Christmas, men are far more likely to view it as a romantic holiday. ✦ 52 per cent of Kiwi women and 45 per cent of men think Christmas is the worst time of year to be single ✦ Men are more likely than women to want to celebrate the festive season as a couple ✦ 69 per cent of men, 51 per cent of women think it’s a great time of year for a new partner to meet the family ✦ Men are more enthusiastic than women about exchanging Christmas presents
Men are also more likely than women to think of Christmas as the perfect occasion for a new partner to meet the family, with 69 per cent agreeing that everyone being in one place makes it easy. Women were more divided: 51 per cent agree with the men, while 49 per cent think that there’s too much pressure at Christmas.
Men are more enthusiastic than women about exchanging Christmas presents
New Zealanders don’t want to be single at Christmas The survey of 200 New Zealand singles asked respondents to name the day of the year when they least wanted to be single. Men and women are of one mind: 52 per cent of women and 45 per cent of men think being single on Christmas Day is worse than being single on Valentine’s Day or on New Year’s Eve. However, Kiwi men are more inclined to Christmas romance overall.
Men are more likely than women to want to celebrate the festive season as a couple. romantic partner. In comparison, 38% of men would pick family and 26 per cent of women would prefer romance.
The singles in the survey were also asked who they most wanted to spend time with at Christmas and, while the majority of Kiwi women (48%) chose a small family gathering as their preferred way to celebrate, men were more smitten with the idea of celebrating as a couple: 44 per cent want to spend Christmas with a
Sixty nine per cent of men think it is a great time of year for a new partner to meet the family
Kiwi men’s taste for Christmas romance also outstrips women when it comes to gift-giving, with 75 per cent of men thinking that it’s important to buy Christmas presents for a new partner, compared with just 61 per cent of women. Men are also happier to give big items earlier: Fourteen per cent of men (and just 6 per cent of women) think it is ok to gift something big, expensive, and/or meaningful within the first month of dating. However, with 38 per cent of women revealing that they’ve been made to feel uncomfortable in the past by being given a fancy gift too soon into a relationship, men in very new romances are urged to curb their festive enthusiasm (at least until next Christmas comes around).

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Kiwis reckon Trump wouldn’t cut it as Father Christmas
H
e may be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year but Kiwis think Donald Trump would be the worst Santa Claus according to Colmar Brunton’s 2016 Christmas survey. The annual survey this year asked Kiwis who they thought would make the best and worst Santa, as well as what makes for the best and worst stocking fillers and when Christmas advertising should start and when you should stop believing in Father Christmas. US President-elect Trump was a clear choice in the worst Santa category on 38 per cent, ahead of Kanye West (13 per cent), who has threatened to run for the US presidency in 2020, and New Zealand’s own polarising media personality, Paul Henry, is in third place on 11 per cent. Colmar Brunton Account Manager Jessica Balbas says women clearly were much less keen than men on the idea of The Donald as Santa, with 47 per cent of female respondents nominating him as the worst Santa compared to 28 per cent of males. She says while those results may not surprise anybody the choice for best Santa was a bit less predictable. All Blacks record-breaking captain Richie McCaw, who has recently spent

Clooney (13 per cent) seen as more desirable in a Santa suit. But the overall winner was Sir Ian McKellen with 25 per cent of the vote.
“I guess when Kiwis think of Sir Ian they see him as Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings, complete with white hair and white beard, which makes him a natural fit,” Ms Balbas says. And when asked up to what age it is acceptable for children to believe in Santa, a solid two thirds of Kiwis said it was acceptable to believe at any age. “I think kids these days have caught on to the ‘if you continue to believe you will continue to receive’ theory and are happy to play along well into their teens.” The Christmas survey also saw Kiwis come out against the recent trend of Christmas advertising launching earlier and earlier in the year. A whopping 87 per cent were in favour of restricting Christmas advertising to November and December. When it comes to stocking fillers, the advice, based on the survey results, is stock up on lollies, chocolate, gift cards, books and magazines but avoid the likes of socks, undies and fruit. “Clearly Christmas is still seen as a time for treats rather than prioritising the healthier 5+ a day ethos,” Ms Balbas says. A representative sample of 500 New Zealanders were surveyed and the survey has a maximum margin of error of + or – 4.4 per cent.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Carollers are warming up
T
winkling fairy lights festoon trams and historic buildings, carollers are warming up and Santa is on his way – the iconic Christmas Lights at MOTAT is almost here again. For more than a decade, the museum has raised funds through this fun-filled event to buy Christmas gifts for those less fortunate. Entry is only $2 per person and supported charities are Auckland Women’s Refuge and Auckland City Mission. MOTAT chief executive Michael Frawley explains that the team at the Museum take great pride in giving back to the Auckland community by inspiring visitors and getting behind fantastic charitable initiatives such as this. “We believe that people should be able to celebrate Christmas no matter what their situation, so we’re thrilled to support the organisations who are offering a helping hand to struggling families at this time of year,” says Mr Frawley. Auckland City Missioner Chris Farrelly says the donated gifts will be very well received by the thousands of Aucklanders needing support from the Mission this Christmas. “We are really thankful for the generosity of Aucklanders over the holiday period; emergency food, a present and kindness make all the difference to families living in desperate need,” says Mr Farrelly. Donna Hill, Interim Chair at Auckland Women’s Refuge is also grateful to MOTAT and its visitors for thinking of their families.
will be delighted to discover Santa in his grotto while his elves roam the grounds keeping everyone entertained. Guests can also take in MOTAT’s old-fashioned Blacksmith Forge in full swing or catch an outdoor festive movie from 9pm each night (weather permitting) before meandering along Regent Street to admire the Christmas-themed shop windows. ✦ Visitors can experience the magic of Christmas Lights at MOTAT every evening between 8pm and 11pm from December 15 to 24. Entry is only $2 per person with all proceeds going towards buying gifts for charity. Further details on the MOTAT website: www.motat.org.nz/experience/ events/christmas-lights-at-motat/
“MOTAT’s Christmas fundraiser is critical at this time of the year when many women and children are struggling to work through difficult circumstances. “These donations mean that a number of families are able to have a more joyful Christmas than they would have had,” says Ms Hill. There will be a myriad of things to see and do at Christmas Lights at MOTAT with live entertainment, traditional Christmas treats for sale, an interactive Winter Wonderland and horse-drawn carriage rides. Night rides on MOTAT’s heritage trams offer a special view of the Museum’s brand new Christmas tree. Of course children

classic cars
‘XK8 and I will be at the Brit & Euro car show’
PUZZLE NO. 7787 1
M
inis were the first cars that stole Garry Robinson’s heart. These days, it’s Jaguars. A 1996 Jaguar XK8 Coupe, to be exact. The Carnival Red body glistens in the sunshine and its rims are almost shiny enough to see your reflection. Inside, it has a 4.0 litre V8 engine and a 5 speed automatic transmission. According to Mr Robinson, it’s a modern classic. He spent more than a year looking for one in good condition and with low mileage in this particular colour and finally found one for private sale on TradeMe which ticked all the boxes. “I like the look of the car, its colour, its shape and general design really appeal to me,” he said. Five years on from purchase and Mr Robinson is still perfectly content with the car. “If I won Lotto I might start to look around, but right now I’m happy with it,” he said. He used to enjoy driving it around, but these days he prefers to keep it for display purposes. “I try to keep it to 1000km

a year. It’s 20 years old and it’s done around 20,000km. “I used to enjoy driving it around but it’s too heartbreaking if someone dings it up at the shops.” Mr Robinson and his car will both be making an appearance at the Brit and Euro Car Show which will be held in March next year. Last year’s inaugural show drew around 480 classic cars to Lloyd Elsmore Park and 2017 looks on track to be just as popular , if not more. So far, there have been more than 316 registrations made up of a combination of clubs
and individuals, however that number is likely to change. “Car clubs have to take a bit of a stab with numbers at the moment, so we ask them to firm up numbers a bit closer to the time.” For some, the interest in classic cars comes from nostalgia. “People have the opportunity to see the cars they grew up with and hear them, “Oh that’s what we had, and see the cars (that were) driven when they were children,” said Mr Robinson. For others, the interest develops through motorsport.
The Brit and Euro Car Show aims to bring everyone from the keenest petrol head to a novice classic car fan together under a common interest. “It’s a fun, free day out east and a nice day out with the kids,” Mr Robinson said. “There will be many different British and European marquees on display from specialist manufacturers of expensive luxury cars to far more humble manufacturers.” The planning for next year’s show began in August this year and the committee meets roughly every two months to keep the wheels turning. The highlights of the show for Mr Robinson are simple things such as interacting with people on a common subject and of course the cars themselves. He might be a Jaguar man now, but there’s still room in Mr Robinson’s heart for the humble Mini. “I grew up loving Minis. My first car was an old school Mini. I still love Minis.” ➤➤The 2017 Brit and Euro Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday March 5, 2017 between 10am and 3pm. Entry and registrations are free. Those interested can register their vehicles at https://briteurocarshow.nz.

Marilyn home in time to celebrate Christmas A stolen statue has been returned to its Farm Cove owner. Maria Ross told the Times in October how thieves had stolen a larger-than-life showpiece in front of her Fisher Parade home. The statue of Marilyn Monroe, a former Hollywood screen siren and model, stands at more than 1.8m (6 feet) and weighs around 80kg. Ms Ross said the “well-known and loved statue” was stolen from her home on either Thursday night (October 13) or Friday morning.
“It would have taken two or more people to get her into a truck or trailer,” she said. On Sunday night Ms Ross posted on social media: “OMG!!!!! Marilyn was dropped off tonight and as promised.... No Questions Asked!! “Reward Requested and I paid it.” She said the statue was a little bit worse for wear, with eyelashes cut off and a “few cuts n bruises”. “She is spilt down one side. They have obviously dropped her,” Ms Ross said.

Public aren’t buying talk of crash: poll the age bracket most likely to pick a decrease were those aged over 61 years old (12 per cent). Geographic breakdowns were also covered. Of those polled, 58 per cent of Aucklanders, 62 per cent of Wellingtonians, 46 per cent of Christchurch locals are expecting property prices to increase in the next six months. In provincial cities the numbers were 57 per cent, in towns 53 per cent, and in rural areas 54 per cent. Those most likely to pick a decrease were in towns (10 per cent), followed by Auckland (9 per cent) and provincial cities (8 per cent) and rural areas (8 per cent). Meanwhile in Christchurch 40 per cent of locals are picking prices to stay the same. Mr Church says that party affiliation also

seemed to play a part in the extent to which participants were expecting an increase in prices. Labour supporters (66 per cent) and New Zealand First supporters (64 per cent) voters are most likely to expect property price increases in the next six months - while National supporters (12 per cent) were most likely to pick a decrease in prices”. Biggest impact Mr Church said that the survey also measured the perceived impact, on house prices, of 5 price influencers. These were foreign investors, local investors, immigrants, Central and Local Government and banks. Participants were asked to rank these on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 being no impact and 10 being the highest impact. “Participants selected foreign investors as having the largest impact with an impact rating of 7, followed by Banks (6.2) and domestic investors (6). Central and Local Government were perceived to have the least impact on property prices at (5.3) and immigrants were second to lowest (5.6)”. He said that geographically, by gender, political persuasion and age group - ‘foreign investors’ were nominated across the board as having the ‘biggest impact’ on property prices – with the exception to this being among Green Party supporters who believe the banks have the same impact on property prices as foreign investors. “While people seem to differ on the causes, a significant proportion of them aren’t buying recent talk of an imminent crash and the large majority of people also share our view that a sharp price correction in the housing market is unlikely.” “That would tend to confirm our view that the current price slow-down in the Auckland property market is being driven by the Reserve Banks LVR restrictions, rather than any loss of confidence in the Auckland market”.

Headline result Mr Church said that participants were asked whether they thought property prices would increase, decrease or stay the same in the next six months. “Fifty six per cent of respondents indicated that they believe house prices will increase; only 8 per cent are picking a decrease and 28 per cent opted for ‘stay the same’. In other words, a clear majority of people are picking house price inflation to continue for at least another six months”. He said that age group breakdowns also provided some interesting observations, with two thirds of those aged 31-45 (the largest group) being the most certain of property price increases in the next six months, while
Property Institute poll of public perceptions has revealed that foreign investors are copping the blame for having the biggest impact on New Zealand house prices - while a clear majority of people don’t believe those talking up a property market crash. PINZ chief executive Ashley Church says the institute commissioned the polling questions to get a better feel for public perceptions about property. “I’m surprised by some of the results particularly the unexpectedly broad view that foreign investors are having ‘the biggest impact’ on the property market – but as a snapshot of perceptions these views are important and shouldn’t be ignored.”

wo seven-year-old East Auckland children with rare medical conditions have received grants as part of the Mazda Foundation’s final funding round for 2016. Gianni van Niekerk from Botany Downs, who was born with Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy, is one of 26 recipients from across New Zealand to receive a share of more than $64,000. The condition leaves Gianni with limited use of the right side of her body. She received $3,100 to purchase a Hase Trike, enabling her to go bike riding with her friends and lead a more active life. Like most children her age, Gianni loves to play and explore, however being unable to use her right hand and having problems with her balance, makes the simple task of riding a bike all the more challenging. Gianni’s mother, Cherie van Neikerk, says the specially modified trike will help Gianni’s development by improving her strength, awareness and coordination. “This bike will change Gianni’s life completely! As well as helping her developmentally, it will allow her to play and socialise like other children her age, engage in the local community and spend more time with her family and friends, she says. Another seven-year-old, Sam Davy from Mellons Bay, received a grant of $1,149 to purchase

OPINION
Tough battles await champ It’s a long road to being recognised as the undisputed champion Howick Sailing Club’s new committee boat, Kaitiaki. Photo supplied Tim Nichols
HSC launches new its boat Howick Sailing Club (HSC) officially launched its new committee boat at the weekend, breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow just in time for the busiest period of the summer sailing season. The brand new vessel has been named Kaitiaki, which means guardian in Maori. It will be used as the start boat whenever the club has a race day and will also be used at major sailing events across Auckland. Kaitiaki was made by Innovision Boats and was sponsored and supported by a number of local businesses. Auckland councillor Dick Quax was at the opening on Sunday, as were past Howick Sailing Club commodores. Current commodore Marc Frewin spoke at the event and was given a plaque by the club committee to recognise the amount of work he put into the club getting the new boat. Howick Sailing Club – based at Howick Beach – has races most weekends from now and is hosting some major events in 2017, including the Jolly Boat National Championships in March.
H
aving made history as the first New Zealandborn boxer to win one version of the multiple world heavyweight titles, Joseph Parker will need to sharpen his act if he is to become undisputed champion against the likes of Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Having come from behind to win a disputed home decision against American based Mexican Andy Ruiz Jnr from three overseas judges at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Saturday night, 24-year-old Parker achieved his dream of winning the WBO crown. But as in his fight against Carlos Takam, the personable local hero was not entirely convincing against a tough opponent who carried the fight to him by halving the ring and forcing him to counter punch. In the end it was the snappy left jab and Ruiz’s battered face that gave Parker the crown, albeit by just two points on the cards of two judges and a draw

on that of the third. In winning, the Kiwi Samoan carried his unbeaten professional record to 22, 18 by knockout while the Ruiz suffered his first loss in 30, 19 by KO. However against an opponent who displayed a strong defence, Parker was unable to land the fast, twofisted combinations that had previously dispatched so many of his previous opponents. The plan, according to trainer Kevin Barry, had been to follow up his double left jab with a right to the body and a left hook. That he didn’t execute it left Barry puzzled. It is a good combination. But when boxers attempt right-
handed body shots they can leave themselves exposed to a left hook. More disturbing was the fact Parker carried both hands low for much of the fight instead of protecting his head by carrying them high in the manner of Ruiz. Against fearsome punchers Joshua and Wilder, that could be fatal although Parker claims to have no fear of either. Certainly he doesn’t lack confidence or courage, just as he doesn’t lack speed or power. But he will need to produce a better defence and more combinations if he is to succeed against those two. Like Parker, both are unbeaten with IBF champ Joshua having won all 18 of his professional bouts by KO. WBC champ Wilder has won all 37 of his, an incredible 36 by KO. Meanwhile, Joshua is scheduled to defend his IBF crown against former multiple champion Wladimir Klitshko, as well as contest the WBF and IBO titles left vacant by the
troubled Tyson Fury. Parker’s promoters Duco are leaning towards an April defence of his IBO crown in Dunedin against Fury’s 1.98m cousin, Hughie, who, at 22, is two years younger than the Kiwi star. Certainly Fury should not pose the same menacing threat to Parker that Joshua and Wilder do. Making haste slowly would be the smart move until Parker fully develops the necessary skill set to combat the threat they pose. Meanwhile he can make hay while the sun shines, picking up rich purses against lesser men until he’s ready to tackle the real monsters in a bid to unify the world heavyweight crown. Having proved he can sting like a bee, our Joseph needs to hone his defence by showing he can, like the late Mohammad Ali, float like a butterfly.
