he Christmas holidays are upon us but not everyone leaves Auckland. For those of us who choose to spend most of our time at home, between sharing food with the family and catching up with rest, some of us will get out and about with friends or family, even for a few hours. That’s where the East Auckland app will be helpful. Created to open up all that is on offer on this side of the Panmure Bridge, the free app can be downloaded to either Android or Apple devices. It is designed to give users instant access to everything from things to do and where to spend your leisure time to what’s going on in the region and local news. The East Auckland app,

ADVERTISERS The 2015 Nielsen Media Trends Report shows community newspapers have more readers a week in NZ than daily newspapers
developed by locally-owned company Times Media, has had a great response so far with downloads growing exponentally. The app provides a compass in a sea of metadata which simplifies access to contact details and information relevant to visitors and locals, irrespective of age. It provides ready access to just about anything you might want to know or find under easy-to-navigate icons with a plethora of touch screen points, Users will find address details and, where applicable, an instant map pinpointing the location of the amenity or business or group. Some of those listed who have chosen to expand their offerings have additional information and
images as well as direct contact details. Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben says the East Auckland app is an innovation made to make busy lives a little simpler not only for visitors but those who live, work, eat, play and are active in the Howick, Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach, Botany, Ormiston, East Tamaki, Whitford, Clevedon and Beachlands, Maraetai areas. “It features everything that’s happening in our community right down to the news in this area. Just download it and have a look and a play with it,” Mrs Neben says. The East Auckland app can be downloaded from Google Play for Android devices and the App Store for Apple users.

lassy Crafts, Howick’s indoor market, is to close. For almost 10 years, Classy Crafts has opened its doors on Saturdays at All Saints Community Hall in Cook Street. Classy Crafts will be opening the doors for the last time this Saturday from 9am-1pm. Initiator and convenor of Classy Crafts, Ruth Hammond, acknowledges the long-term support of Margaret Sexton who has used her considerable skills in marketing and promotion and assisted new stall holders with the presentation of their products. “I would like to thank Margaret, and our team of volunteers who had
a vital part to play and were always there to support the smooth running of the market,” said Ruth. “Additionally, I would like to say a big thankyou to the people of Howick and surrounds for their support. It has been an absolute joy to meet so many lovely people.” There will be tears and many hugs exchanged between the Classy Crafters after 1pm when the market closes for the last time. “Take the opportunity to purchase some last minute Christmas shopping and to pop in and say goodbye to your favourite stall holders and obtain their business cards,” said Ruth. Desirable Christmas raffles will be drawn on the day.

Petition launched to make English an official language in Aotearoa ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL
H
owick local Gayleen Mackereth has started a petition to make English one of the three official languages of New Zealand. Most people are probably under the impression that English is an official language, due to it being the official language of this county until it was removed in 1987, when Maori became an official language. English has remained a de-facto official language since then. It is
accepted as such within legalese. NZ First MP Clayton McMillan was involved in a push to recognise English alongside Te Reo Maori and Sign Language. The bill is still under consideration. Gayleen argues: “While 96 per cent of the people speak or understand English, and the school system and all major communication in this country is in English, it seems strange that English is not an official language together with Sign Language and Maori” “English is a key to our economic
survival and for many people, the thing which connects us to other people throughout the world and attracts students and tourists to our shores.” “If English is not an official language, how can we ask new immigrants to reach a certain level in a language which is not an official language? How can we accept a court judgment written in English if the official language is Maori/Sign Language?” “There has been grave concern for the loss of Maori language and
over the last 30 years many steps have been taken to rejuvenate the language There is a huge push for school students and others to learn Maori nowadays. This is echoed in official publications and on television. TVOne, in particular, begins and ends programmes in Maori and incorporates extra words in Maori during the broadcast. Many official publications now use Maori words as headings and use Maori in the main text untranslated,” Gayleen says. “Regularly, these words are not
italicised to distinguish them as belonging to another language, but left in standard text, unlike Japanese which uses a different alphabet for loanwords, or earlier publications by British authors where French words were often incorporated but in italics to distinguish them from English in the text. “This makes it particularly difficult for us trying to teach new immigrants what is and what is not in English and doubles the difficulty in resettling.” ➤➤What do you think? Granny May says farewell After more than 20 years of coming to Howick Primary before and after school, ‘Granny’ Mary Harmsworth has finally decided to hang up her high-vis jacket for good. At a special segment of the school Prizegiving Ceremony this week, Mary was recognised and appreciated for her amazing tenure of service to the school with a specially made “Lollipop” award, kindly designed and made by Michael at iEngrave in Howick. Local MP, Simeon Brown, also sent a “Parliamentary certificate of Appreciation” to mark the occasion. Mary’s grandson Simon spoke about how she started helping out when he began school over 22 years ago, by reading books and helping on trips then beginning as the road patrol crossing guardian. Mary helped train the road patrollers
each year, working many years with Adele White, (the current Howick Local Board Chairperson) when Adele was the local Police Education specialist. Mary has asked the principal, Leyette Callister, to ensure that there are parents stepping up to help at the crossing, so this year, two days per week, parents have been manning the crossings. Mary felt road patrol duty distracts teachers from their important classroom work so felt she would rather be at school than causing a teacher to leave their class. Howick Primary School is forever indebted to Mary for her many years of dedicated service to our community, but approaching the age of 82, she will now have more time to devote to her other interests and to visiting family in the south island whenever she fancies it.

CHRISTMAS
Wonder Park draws the crowds C
hristmas Wonder Park at Barry Curtis Park was bigger, better and more exciting than ever! So many joined in for a time of celebration and a chance of exploration at the weekend. This was an event for all ages and it was an opportunity for the whole community to get together and celebrate the Christmas season. There were food stalls, performances, free games stalls and a very special ‘Christmas Walk-Through’ that delighted the heart. There were also door gifts and lucky draw prizes! “Thanks to Howick Local Board, Barfoot & Thompson and Ormiston Cafe for their support for the grant that has enabled us to put on this event,” organisers said.

Geof’s favourite he has owned is the 1987 V12 X J S, and counts the series 4 (with a 2.8 litre motor and 3.6 litre gear box) as the first ‘bad’ buying mistake. Geof will be bringing along his wife’s 2019 Jaguar XJL, a 2013 Jaguar XF sport brake, and a classic 1967 Jaguar 420 G mark 10. According to organisers, the non-competitive public event has already signed up 774 cars and 21 bikes for the 2020 show. The number expected to climb and better

Howick Brass marks six decades H
owick Brass is celebrating 60 years in the business. Band president Max Christiansen said Howick Brass has been an integral part of the community since 1959, starting out as the Howick Citizens Band through to Smiths Locksmiths Manukau City Brass in the 1990s and 2000s, up until the present day where the band has returned firmly to its roots as Howick Brass Inc. It was formed to serve the community 60 years ago by an enthusiastic group of local community volunteers. “The band has grown over the years to not only serve Howick but also the majority of the east and south Auckland regions, with our students, academy band and senior band members coming from Panmure, Glen Innes through Otara and as far south as Papakura,” said Max. The ensemble of around 35 musicians is now firmly established as a strong and well-recognised community initiative and continues to serve the Auckland/Manukau area from year to year at civic services, community concerts, various parades and other notable performances. Howick Brass Band performs at around 45 play-outs per year. The most notable include the popular Carols by Candlelight on Stockade Hill, carol services around the Howick area, and the Howick Anzac Day services. The band also works with local groups to add a diverse range of entertainment to community events. The band has had much success

in developing strong and committed musicians. Younger members of the band have had the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Brass Band, New Zealand Secondary Schools Composite Band and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. More experienced members have even had the privilege of being selected for the National Band of New Zealand. In an effort to make the world of “brass-banding” more accessible to a younger audience, Howick Brass has recently launched an academy
band programme which provides free group lessons to beginner and intermediate brass musicians, helping them learn and develop the art of brass playing. There are currently 10 - 15 members each week, with ages ranging from 6 to 15. “In addition to local community engagements, Howick Brass Band enjoys participating in the National Brass Band Championship each year,” said Max. “In recent years the band has had significant success at these events, winning 1st place in the C Grade at

the 2018 contest in Blenheim and 2nd in the same grade at this year’s contest in Hamilton.” The band achieves similar results each year at the Auckland Bands Association district contest. As to reasons why members play in Howick Brass, Max said the most important one is that they love music and they love playing music. “You wouldn’t give up this much time in a week if you didn’t. We all come from different playing backgrounds. “We have some extremely good
players in this band and we have some players who are still trying work on the basics but everyone is patient with each other (usually) and we all help each other out to give better performances.” There are many families involved with the band too. “A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of welcoming back a returning grandmother at rehearsal - three generations in one band,” said Max. “There is a sense of loyalty and camaraderie that you get with a sports team. It is generally a bad feeling you get when you have to ring in sick or work late or you have to look after the kids that night. “Our lives have become increasingly busy and we all try to make this work for the good of the band. There is a sense of contributing something to the community not just at concerts but play-outs for Anzac Day and Carols by Candlelight are very important to the people in the band and to the people in Howick.” As to the future: “Our goal is working with the local Howick community towards developing local facilities as an art and cultural centre within a vibrant village atmosphere.” Rehearsals and learner classes take place at the band rooms weekly at the Howick Domain on Wednesday nights 7:30pm. If you are interested in joining the band, feel free to contact the band president Max Christiansen on 027 430 3377. OPINION
We must invest in infrastructure O
ne of the biggest challenges our community is facing is a lack of transport infrastructure and a clear and concrete vision being delivered. The Government’s announcement of $12 billion for new infrastructure should be welcomed, however considerable detail is still required. This year I’ve been working on delivering the new Botany to Airport Busway, which will run along Te Irirangi Drive. I’m working with the Transport Minister on this project and have made the argument that we need to see a Park-and-Ride facility in Botany as part of this busway and the Eastern Busway. The Minister has instructed his officials to investigate a Park-andRide as part of this work. This is an area where being an MP who sits in the middle of politics, with relationships on both sides of Parliament, means I can effectively work in the best interests of local projects. Another part of Botany’s infrastructure that needs an urgent upgrade is the Chapel Road Bridge. This unsafe crash hotspot was built more than 60 years ago to rural standard but is in a rapidly growing urban environment. It’s near a number of schools,

the premier Barry Curtis Park and the Ormiston Town Centre under construction, and needs to be widened, straightened and have pedestrian and cycling facilities installed. I’m pushing Mayor Phil Goff and Auckland Transport to carry out the necessary work to the bridge.
A few days after the Government announced its $12b spend, the National Party released its own infrastructure policy document. I read all 56 pages and couldn’t find a single mention of any local projects for Botany. The long-running tradition of the two major political parties forgetting east Auckland will continue if there’s no loud advocate working for Botany and delivering on local issues. Every major party MP from Labour or National will always have to sit back and put their party first, ahead of local needs. The freedom to now speak up means I’ve been able to achieve more in the past year as an independent voice than I did in eight years as a National MP. Finally, I’d like to wish the people of Botany a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to continuing our ongoing conversation with Times readers about a wide range of subjects important to our community in 2020. ➤➤Jami-Lee Ross, Botany MP

t is hoped more Kiwis will be opting to include a colourful grazing platter packed with delicious fresh produce as their centrepiece for this year’s Christmas table. The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust general manager Paula Dudley says a growing number of people are committing to a plant-based diet or at least making a conscious effort to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. “This is the perfect occasion to get creative with your Christmas table, as this time of year we have an amazing array of choices including sweet cherries, strawberries, ripe tomatoes, new potatoes, avocados, asparagus and fresh herbs. “You’ll be amazed by how much more energetic you feel by eating a platter like this at Christmas instead of less healthy options” says Dudley. Colour is the key to compiling an attractive
toasted pumpkin seeds and walnuts plus a wedge of lemon or lime to create an impressive festive display. Merry Christmas!
ABOUT 5+ A DAY Did you know that eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables has also been linked to an improved mood? spread, so opt for plenty of bright reds, yellows, greens and a splash of beetroot hummus that will really get your taste buds going. Cherries and strawberries are synonymous with Christmas given they’re in peak season. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants and are a good source of vitamin C, manganese, folate and potassium. Avocados are one of only a few fruit which contain fat. This healthy monounsaturated fat helps to lower blood cholesterol and increase satiety, so you’ll be less tempted to go back for
second (or third) helpings on Christmas Day. Asparagus will provide your daily dose of folate while new season potatoes are a must-have with any festive meal. They’re high in fibre and a terrific source of vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin C, niacin and pantothenic acid. “Did you know that eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables has also been linked to an improved mood? So if you want to inject a bit more Christmas cheer into your friends’ or family’s lives, this is a great way to do it,” Dudley says. Top your platter with some
The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust was established in 2007 for the benefit of all Kiwis, especially children. The Trust is committed to increasing the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables for better health in all New Zealanders. We encourage all Kiwis to eat five or more servings of colourful, fresh fruit and vegetables every day for good health. Our key messages are in line with our Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation’s recommendations. The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust is funded by voluntary contributions from New Zealand’s pan produce industry. ✦ Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest @5adaynz #5adaynz

Simon Gault, one of New Zealand’s favourite chefs, has released his latest cookbook just in time for Christmas. We’ll feature a couple of his recipes each week right up until Christmas.
Pina colada mess ►1 ripe pineapple ►1 2 meringues (recipe below) ►1 quantity of Simon’s Rum (or Brandy) Sauce (recipe below) ►2 cups Kara UHT coconut cream (refrigerated for at least 2 hours — see below) ►3 pistachio nuts ►m int sprigs, to garnish
MERINGUES
► 6 egg whites ► 2 cups caster sugar ► 1 tsp vanilla essence ► 1 tsp white vinegar ► 1 tsp cornflour
Serves: 6
SIMON’S RUM (OR BRANDY) SAUCE
I
use the coconut cream that comes in UHT packets. Put it in the fridge for at least 2 hours before using; this separates the solids (which go to the top) and the water (which remains on the bottom). Scoop off the solids and this is what you whip. It takes 10–12 minutes to fully whip. This is my take on the traditional Eton mess; it sure looks a mess but, seriously, this is the most wicked flavour combination. I think it might just become your favourite summer dessert. Remove the pineapple skin and cut the flesh into bite-sized wedges. Place in a bowl. Roughly crush the meringues and add to the bowl with the pineapple and Simon’s Rum (or Brandy) Sauce. (You could add
KC14584-V2
some extra pistachios at this stage if you like.) Scoop all the solid coconut cream into a bowl and discard the coconut water. Whip the solids for approximately 12 minutes, until soft peaks form and it resembles whipped cream. Pour the pineapple-meringue mix onto a serving platter and swirl through the coconut cream. Using a microplane, grate the pistachio nuts over the top of the mess and garnish with mint sprigs.
► 1 cup cream ► 2 egg yolks ► 1 tbsp sugar ► 3 tbsp dark rum or brandy bowl of ice ► ½ cup cream, whipped to soft peaks
Preheat oven to 120°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Very gradually add in the caster sugar, continuing to beat until thick and glossy. Beat in the vanilla essence, vinegar and cornflour. Place spoonfuls of the mixture onto the prepared tray.
Bake for 45 minutes, allow to cool and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them.
SIMON’S RUM (OR BRANDY) SAUCE In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup cream until small bubbles appear. In a separate glass bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy. Pour the cream over the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return this to the saucepan and cook over a very low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the sauce coats the back of the spoon (or it reaches 82°C). Add the rum or brandy. Cool the pan in a bowl of ice and once chilled fold in the whipped cream. ► Extracted from Summer with Simon Gault, published by Penguin Random House NZ, RRP $50. Text © Simon Gault, 2019. Times Newspapers Christmas Supplement, Thursday, December 19, 2019 — 5
God’s got skin in the game For Christmas 2019, the Times asked Pastor Brett Jones, executive member for the East Auckland Ministers’ Association, for a personal reflection on Christmas.
I
’ve always had a fascination with words. My parents instilled in me a love of books and reading. It’s one of the things we’ve passed down to our own children, who read almost as much as they eat! There’s a beauty in words. A precision. Just the right word for the right moment. But sometimes a mystery. Words which drift in meaning over time and depending on context. I find myself endlessly fascinated with the origin of phrases. Recently, I found myself researching a phrase, “skin in the game”. It sounds dangerous before you even know what it means. And if it was inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, then dangerous would be right. In this play, Antonio stands as guarantor for a loan to his friend Bassanio and promises a pound of his own flesh as collateral, to be exacted by the lender Shylock, if Bassanio defaults on the loan. That’s having skin in the game.
When Jesus entered human history, God put skin in the game. God put himself in harm’s way. And it cost him a lot more than a pound of flesh. If you’ve put skin in the game you’ve taken risk, you’ve taken responsibility. You’ve realised that the outcome is so important, that you’ll put yourself in harm’s way to get it done. When Jesus entered human history, God put skin in the game. God put himself in harm’s way. And it cost him a lot more than a pound of flesh. The first 13 verses of John 1
paint a picture of God’s revelation of himself to humanity. And we discover the God who doesn’t merely speak creation into being, he is himself the Word that gets it all started. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made
that has been made. There’s a beauty in these words. A precision and a mystery. John reveals the life and light that flows from that moment of creation. You and I have a sense that we are not alone in the world. Creation speaks to us. Our inner lives crave a sense of connection to what is beyond us. But something is coming. Someone is coming. Someone who will bring light to everyone that we might make sense of our place in the world. God is about to invest in humanity in an unprecedented way: The Word became flesh. The Word who was God and was with God and who made everything was appearing in the flesh. God was putting skin in the game. We will never fully know the cost of that investment. We have some sense of the horror of the Easter Cross. But what about this moment, the moment of becoming flesh? Where God who is “other”, the uncreated God, joins his creation in a moment of selfemptying. That’s a lot of God to
squeeze into a tiny baby! The fully divine God becoming fully human with all of the accompanying limitations, pain and vulnerability. It’s a big deal. It’s skin in the game. God put skin in the game when he became like us. And if you’ve put skin in the game you’ve taken risk, you’ve taken responsibility. You’ve realised that the outcome is so important, that you’ll put yourself in harm’s way to get it done. So what was God so concerned about? The Word became flesh, fully human so that we might become fully human. The fullest realisation of our humanity is simply this: to know and live the reality that we are children of God. So this Christmas as we recall the birth of a child, we might reflect on who we are as children of a God, who loved us so much he put skin in the game. The East Auckland Ministers’ Association comprises more than 65 churches in the Howick Ward area and would be glad to welcome you to a Christmas service this year.

Attention partygoers ... look out for your mates this festive season
R
oad safety charity Brake is appealing to party goers and organisers to ensure everyone in their group gets to and from celebrations safely. As work Christmas parties and other celebrations are in full swing and with many people planning parties for this weekend, Brake is reminding everyone to plan their travel and, if driving to events, making sure the designated driver stays sober. Brake’s Driving for Zero campaign urges drivers not to drink any amount of alcohol or take any drugs before getting behind the wheel. The charity also urges family and friends to speak out and stop a loved one drink or drug driving. Figures show that in 2017, alcohol and/or drugs was a factor in 111 fatal and over 1100 injury crashes resulting in 130 deaths and over 1500 injuries. Research shows that drinking any amount of alcohol can affect your driving.
of confidence and means drivers are more inclined to take risks and believe they are in control when they’re not.
BRAKE’S KEY MESSAGES ON DRINK DRIVING:
If you’re driving home from celebrations, it’s vital you take your responsibility for people’s safety seriously. Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director said: “As a charity that supports people bereaved and injured in crashes, we witness the suffering that drink and drug driving inflict, and appeal to everyone to help put a stop to it. Drink and drug driving deaths and injuries are cruel and needless, ending and ruining lives and leaving behind traumatised families to pick up the pieces. “We want everyone to enjoy the
holiday season and get to their destination safely. If you’re driving home from celebrations, it’s vital you take responsibility for people’s safety seriously. It’s a fact that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs inflate your risk of crashing. Even if you feel okay after a drink, the reality is that if you get behind the wheel you’re putting yourself and others in danger. The only safe amount of alcohol to have if you’re driving is none.”
FACTS Drivers with even 20-50mg alcohol per 100ml of blood are at least three times more likely to die in a crash than those with no alcohol in their blood. This is because even small amounts of alcohol affect drivers’ reaction times, judgment and co-ordination. Alcohol also makes it impossible for drivers to assess their own impairment because it creates a false sense
• Never drink any amount of alcohol if you’re driving • Never drink if you’re driving early the next morning • Plan ahead and make sure you can get home safely by using public transport, booking a taxi/rideshare, or having a sober driver who sticks to soft drinks. • Don’t accept a lift from someone who’s been drinking. • Take responsibility for others: never buy a drink for someone who is driving, speak out to friends who plan to drink and drive, and if you’re hosting a party help your guests to plan a safe way home before the party starts.

CHRISTMAS
Bucks Beach Christmas lights to dim as Peter hangs up Santa hat ■■ BY JIM BIRCHALL
P
eter Harding of Bucklands Beach (pictured above), has been putting on a huge display of Christmas lights on his property for around 30 years. He also dresses up as Santa and throws lollies out to the kids who’ve come to see his display. Each year he stocks up with a whopping 300 kilos of sweets, provided off his own back. This Christmas will be Peters’ last bringing goodwill to all. Now is the time
for him to give it away due his advancing age and the scale of the job. The display and Peter’s generosity will be sadly missed by locals, as it has been a community feature for so long and the origin of many happy Christmas memories. Meanwhile, Times photographer Wayne Martin captured a few more homes in the area which have decorated big-time for Christmas! Merry Christmas from the Times and have a safe and peaceful time.

two of the assailants from the first video. The video was circulated on Instagram in the days following Midnight Madness, and it was forwarded to the boy’s father. He said his son was also knocked to the ground and subjected to a flurry of punches and kicks. The fight was broken up by bystanders. The parent, who did not wish to be named, is a former police officer and said he was informed by his son that he (his son) approached two police officers after the assault and was told he was “silly to come back” and to “sit down”. He alleged that no medical treatment was offered by the constables. The victim made his own way to a local accident and emergency clinic to seek attention for his injuries. The Times understands the boy’s mother has filed a complaint with the Independent Police Complaints Authority. In a statement, Sergeant Brett Meale of Counties Manukau Area Police said, “Police were present at the Midnight Madness event in Howick last Friday night to ensure the safety of the community attending. “Throughout the night there were a handful of reports of breaches of the peace and disorder in the area, which Police attended. “Police made five arrests throughout the night for offences relating to drug offending, theft from motor vehicles, assault and street robbery. These matters will be referred through to the Youth Aid process.”

By JIM BIRCHALL boy’s mother has made a formal complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Authority (IPCA) after an alleged serious assault at Midnight Madness in Howick last Friday. The success of the event this year was tainted by elements exhibiting anti-social behaviour late in the evening. Following the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, the area on and around Stockade Hill was inhabited by a number of intoxicated, unruly youths. Hostilities between rivals overflowed into violence and the Times was provided with a video that showed a sickening, callous, gangattack upon a young man. The video begins with a tense situation between two teenagers as part of a group of 15-16-year-olds inflamed by provocative barbs from an individual. A fight erupted involving students (some of whom are believed to be from local schools Howick College and Pakuranga College) and saw the victim knocked to the ground and set upon by up to 10 youths, the majority of whom connected with kicks to the victim’s head. The melee was broken up by a middle-aged couple, then the crowd dispersed and the video ended. The video was provided to the Times by a parent of another teenager seriously assaulted in a separate incident by a group containing

Local Iraqis call for peace In Middle East T
wo Kiwi-Iraqis living in east Auckland are working to raise awareness of violence in their Middle Eastern homeland that’s resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. Hisham Anuaimy and Judy Siddawi want more New Zealanders to know what’s happening in Iraq and why. Unrest broke out in several parts of the country in October over unhappiness with the country’s leadership, high unemployment and a lack of basic services. International news media recently reported that more than 400 Iraqis have been killed by security forces with more than 17,000 injured. Siddawi, who lives in East Tamaki, says she feels helpless watching the violence unfold from so far away. “It is extremely sad that in 2019 things like this can happen with the innocent victims and the loss of human life.” Anuaimy and Siddawi recently met Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross to ask him to use his voice as their local MP to draw attention to the situation. Ross addressed questions on the protests in Iraq to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Parliament on December 10. He asked whether the Government had taken any action to condemn the “excessive use of force” by security

forces against protestors in Iraq. Ardern said she had been advised the New Zealand Ambassador in Iraq has directly raised concerns “over human rights breaches relating to the demonstrations, and they’ve done so directly with senior representatives of the Iraqi Government”. Ross says Botany is a melting pot of people and cultures from around the world and he’s pleased to have been able to speak up on behalf of local Kiwi-Iraqis about the situation in their homeland. “We are many miles away, but New Zealand can join other international efforts in condemning violence, standing up for human rights and supporting those pro-

The medical doctor and lecturer says people protesting there are just asking for their basic rights. “They want highways, schools, hospitals and other simple requirements. There is no future, no jobs, no factories and no hope for these people.” Siddawi says she wants the New Zealand Government to take a stronger public stand in opposition to the violence in Iraq. “What Jami-Lee did for us is huge and it means a lot to this community. It opened the door for us to be listened to.”
PHOTOGRAPHY
Get snapping for Arts Out East project Arts Out East has announced its first project in 2020, which is led by film and digital photographer Brendan Kitto. He hopes to connect all generations through a nostalgic experience that uses both old and new practices and indoor and outdoor spaces. His project simply titled ‘Howick’, revisits his early years of growing up in the region as a millennial, shining light on the importance of history and documentation during a time of growth and redevelopment. It’s therefore most suited for Brendan to have reached out to Rices Mall owner Wally Rice to house his film photography amongst the mall’s already existing history cabinets and notice boards. Brendan’s installation will not only compliment the space, it will also encourage the regulars and the new, to partake in an east Auckland bus stop exploration, to go into the draw to win an Instax Film Prize Pack.

Amazing Snell as fast off the track as on
Anstis joins Thomson for NZRC

Howick’s Kieran Anstis has announced he will work with top Christchurch-based driver Dylan Thomson for his 2020 New Zealand Rally ChampionKieran Anstis ship. Thomson has worked with partner Amy Hudson since making his rallying debut in 2016 but Hudson purchased a rally car of her own. Anstis comes well credentialled as a graduate of both Motorsport New Zealand’s Elite Academy and Rally New Zealand’s co-drivers’ academy. He also sitting alongside some of New Zealand’s top rally drivers, including an NZRC podium at the final round of the 2019 season, Rally Waitomo. “Amy started talking about taking a year off earlier this season when she bought herself a rally car and it’s nearly ready to run so we both figured it’s as good a time as any,” says Thomson. “The opportunity to work with Kieran came up and I think we’ll make a good combination, we’ve both got similar ambitions and expectations for 2020 and moving further forward.” Anstis says they are both chasing similar goals and targets. “I’m really looking forward to working with him and the team next year.” After a season learning the four-wheel drive, Specialised Auto Services Subaru netted third overall.

hree Olympic and two Commonwealth gold medals and world records for the 800m, half-mile and mile made Peter Snell our greatest track athlete. His recent death in Dallas, Texas, age 80, leaves a nation to mourn a humble Kiwi who had the world at his feet. He was the greatest of inspirational athletic coach Arthur Lydiard’s large stable of middle and long distance champions. Snell was just 21 when he won gold over 800m at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Within the hour Murray Halberg won the 5000m with a typical gutsy run. Snell beat great rival George Kerr to win the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games half-mile before completing the mile double and added the 800m-1500m double at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He also broke the world mile record of Australia’s unbeaten Herb Elliott in Wanganui with a 3m 54.4s run and added the world 800m and half-mile records

at Christchurch’s Lancaster Park. Both those performances were on grass, not the faster allweather synthetic tracks. I first met Peter in Greymouth in the early 1960s where he won a half-mile and later attended a dance at the St John’s Hall. Later that night he came up to me and asked, “What are doing after the dance, Ivan?” “I’m thinking of taking that girl home,” I said indicating a tall, pretty girl in a tartan dress with whom I had danced. “Nah,” said Peter. “A few of us are going to the Albion pub for a few drinks. Why
don’t you join us?” Those were the days of six o’clock closing but West Coasters were notorious for ignoring liquor licensing laws. I wandered alone to the Albion, later renamed Kings after owner and former All Black captain Ron King, and met a group of athletes but no Snell. Eventually he wandered into the bar about an hour later. “Where’ve you been Peter?” I asked. “I just walked home the girl in the tartan dress,” he said. Not surprisingly Steve Hansen has endorsed the selection of Ian Foster to fill the vacancy he left as head coach of the All Blacks. Loyalty has been a major part of Hansen’s incredible success and was shown by the big brass in staying loyal to Graham Henry after the 2007 Rugby World Cup disaster when the All Blacks performed poorly in losing their quarter-final to France in Cardiff. That loyalty was rewarded when the All Blacks beat the same team by just one point in
the 2011 final to allow Henry to retire a winner. Hansen’s record since has been phenomenal. His biggest disappointments was the 2007 World Cup, when he was an assistant to Henry and the controversial drawn home series against the 2017 British Lions and Ireland. In the first the referee missed a forward pass from which France scored. However that couldn’t excuse a poor All Blacks performance. As a long time assistant, Foster has also enjoyed a great run and is, as Hansen verifies, a much better coach today than when he struggled with the Chiefs in Super 12 before new Australian coach Dave Rennie won them two titles. However my biggest fear is that a major rugby playing nation will snare brilliant Crusaders coach Scott Robertson whose three consecutive Super titles were not considered good enough for the All Blacks job. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
