arth shattering disasters can sometimes forge the strongest of relationships. It will be 20 years since Taiwan was destroyed by an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude killing 2400 people and injuring more than 11,000. It happened on September 21 at 1.47am, leaving 100,000 people homeless. More than 9000km away in Pakuranga, Councillor Sharon Stewart still remembers how horrified she was on hearing the news. On contacting the Taiwanese community leaders in Howick and Pakuranga, Sharon thought this would be an opportunity for NZ Firemen and Search and Rescue to learn from assisting in Taiwan as many people were trapped or buried alive. Time was running out. On contacting Search and Rescue in Palmerston North, Sharon was informed that there was no budget available. Refusing to give up, she made a couple of calls. By 10am a group of Taiwanese leaders paid for New Zealand’s first ever NZ Search and Rescue to fly out to an international disaster. Local Howick residents YS Hsieh, CK and Nancy Shih, Jimmy Huang and many others dug deep as they put a team of New Zealand Specialist Search and Rescue on a direct flight to Taiwan. On arrival they teamed up with American, Japanese and Russian Search and Rescue teams. This gave

or someone who had never worked out, Mary Piggins can’t believe that she is the lead in the visually stunning production Dawn. It is a collaboration with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) and The Dust Palace, best described as a ballet in the sky. It’s surreal, a magical escape to another world is how the 17-year-old Howick College student describes her experience at the circus theatre company The Dust Palace. She is surprised by the core strength and flexibility she’s developed in the last couple of years. “Till three years ago I had never done gymnastics or dancing or any kind of exercise. And now I am obsessed with it. I can’t believe how much strength I have developed. “The first six months were tough but then onwards it’s only been fun,” Mary admits. She believes it has helped her use different parts of her brain as she developed body awareness, self discipline and confidence to perform in front of an audience. “The hardest thing is to have a grip and hold on to the silk rope. Former Prime Minister John Key was the special guest at the official launch of the new East Auckland BMW and Mini dealership on Te Irirangi Drive. Dozens of clients and other guests were at the launch party on Tuesday night. The new business is a “sister dealership” to New Zealand’s most popular and successful BMW and MINI Dealerships - Auckland City BMW and Auckland MINI Garage in Newmarket. Managing director of Auckland City and East Auckland BMW and MINI Garage Ian Gibson said: “For a premium brand it’s not only about selling luxury cars, but ensuring that every link in the business chain focuses on putting the customer first. With this at the forefront of our new expansion, we have created positive and unique enhancements at each and every touch point of the customer journey with both BMW and MINI.”

Mary gives credit to Eve Gordon and Mike Edward, the people behind the Dust Palace for having scripted Dawn which showcases cirque artistry. After a sell-out, breathtaking show Midnight, this collaboration between APO and The Dust Palace, will tell their enchanting story around and above the orchestra. Handel’s beautiful Sarabande, Respighi’s portrait of The Nightingale and arguably the most famous sunrise ever set to music, Grieg’s shimmering Morning Mood from Peer Gynt, are just a few of the beautiful and sometimes quirky classics the orchestra will perform. The repertoire also includes two pieces by highly-regarded New Zealand composer Eve de Castro-Robinson; Aurora and an excerpt from Releasing the Angel. The audience can expect giant puppets and performers flying through the sky with more surprises thrown in. Come see the rock star politicians For most Kiwis, politicians are not the rock stars that our sports stars can be. Local government elections usually don’t engender the same pride, joy and hope amongst Kiwis, as the All Blacks playing at the Rugby World Cup in Japan or the America Cup sailors in the stunning Waitemata. But wait, if you are voting in

Collings and Bungard: Strong Leadership Achieves Local Board Results T

he collective leadership of Howick Local Board Chairman David Collings and Deputy Chair Katrina Bungard has delivered huge results according to a report released last month by Auckland Council staff. Received at the August 2019 meeting, the report highlights the community outcomes from the Howick Local Board Plan and how these have been delivered over the last three year term. As your elected representatives, Collings and Bungard believe in accountability and are delighted that there have been many projects, initiatives, events and activities that easily demonstrate how the Board has delivered in a capable and prudent manner on behalf of local communities and residents. Some highlights include: n Completing a comprehensive renewal of the Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre, including enhancement of the splash pad play area.

n Adopting the Howick Walking and Cycling Network Plan, with a 10-15km network of shared paths, along the edge of the Tamaki Inlet linking to the Rotary Walkway. n Completing the Mangemangeroa Reserve walkway and carpark, and opening the John Walker Promenade in Barry Curtis Park. Also in the list of achievements is a renewal of the boat ramp and pontoons at Half Moon Bay, and the adoption of the Howick Village Centre Plan and the Howick Heritage Plan; which will be used in the future to protect the communities local heritage. The Board has also successfully constructed and renewed over 20 playgrounds and public toilets across the ward. Another project which deserves a mention is the fruit and vegetables in schools programme. This is a partnership programme with Kings Plant Barn that has been successfully delivered to 17 local schools. Other popular partnership projects include the delivery of the Pest Free Howick

programme; which included the provision of environmental education and resources across the community. Both Collings and Bungard attribute the success of this past term to the full local board team. “It is n■ David Collings and Katrina Bungard. great to work on a Board of fiscally minded people; it has been a pleasure to Pakuranga Road. Members plead to save Horticultural Society in Howick T

he Howick Horticultural Society, now in its 96th year, could be facing extinction. Save the 96-year-old Howick Horticultural Society and preserve a slice of Howick history and community activism. This was the appeal from two of the society’s members Brenda Loader and Jenny Hough. “Unless we get more people to manage the garden club which is nearly a century old, the Howick Horticultural Society would be headed for extinction. It would be sad if it fell short of its 100th anniversary in 2023,” said Mrs Loader. Like most hobby societies, the Howick Horticultural Society is low on numbers as it tends to attract older people. The society recently held a Daffodil and Camellia Show in the Fencible Lounge in Howick. ful flowers. Howick’s second oldest society meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month at Haseler Hall at All Saints Church. It organises flower shows and talks and has been a fixture on the Auckland gardening scene

for decades. The Howick Horticultural Society originally started as the Howick Beautifying Society in 1923, it’s mission being to preserve greenery and to campaign against the destruction of flora. It encouraged the planting of trees and shrubbery in public spaces like beaches and reserves. The society which changed to its present name in recent times has had a hand in development of Nixon Memorial Park which later incorporated croquet and bowling greens. It has considerable archival assets: minutes from the post war years until the present century, membership lists, newsletters, record of competitions and winner sand historical photographs. A valuable resource for researchers in community history, it is definitely worth saving. ➤➤For more information contact Maurine Meyrick at 535-4769.

Winners of National holocaust essay competition Two of the three writers who have been honoured for their moving compositions on the Holocaust, in the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand’s annual Paul Seideman Composition competition, are from east Auckland. The winner of the inaugural Year 7-8 age category is Year 8 student Rosetta Tanner from Somerville Intermediate School. Rosetta wrote about Irena Sendler, the Polish nurse and social worker who smuggled more than 2000 children out of the Warsaw ghetto. Rosetta said researching Irena’s story “made me realise it is simple courageous acts that make someone a hero”. Orlando Ye, a Year 9 student at Botany Downs Secondary College, won the Year 9-10 category, writing about

how Holocaust survivors “found it very hard to return home” and that many chose to immigrate to countries around the world, including New Zealand. Funded and supported by Holocaust survivor Paul Seideman, this year’s competition introduced a new junior age category for students in Year 7-8. Chris Harris, chief executive officer of the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, visited the winners at their respective schools to break the good news to them. Rosetta and Orlando will attend the United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day at Makara Cemetery in Wellington on January 27 and will read their winning compositions before an audience of distinguished guests at the Parliamentary reception.

The Pakuranga Rotary Trivia Night with a Wearable Arts theme held at Edgewater College was a riot. Not only in terms of colours, ideas and fellowship but also with former president Duncan Loney going all out to entertain. He was an excellent MC and quite a showman with the outrageous change of costumes. It was a well-orchestrated event that raised a lot of money for the Life Education Trust. women today Committed to serving

Stroke of fortune for HBH

Sharon Stewart QSM loves serving her community. Over the years she has been involved in many things that have made a difference to so many people in the Howick Ward that includes Howick/ Pakuranga/Botany/Ormiston. Having lived most of her life in Howick, and due to commitment to public service, Sharon has been awarded Howick Citizen of the Year and received a Queens Service medal QSM in 1998 for public service. Howick’s welfare and future are supreme importance to Sharon, and she continues to faithfully demonstrate her commitment concerning issues such as the views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. Flooding and stormwater are high on her list of things that need to be improved as is heritage protection and the wellbeing of senior citizens and our young people; playgrounds being upgraded with shade cloth for our little people; supporting our local businesses. Sharon wants to push for better and effective public transport. Howick in the Park later known as the Military Tattoo and Strongman event was a popular annual event initiated by her. Sharon’s been working alongside Roxanne, the wife of the late Dick Quax

As part of our commitment to excellence in aged care, HBH Senior Living was thrilled to welcome physiotherapist, Margot Andrew, to the team earlier this year. Margot heads up HBH’s very comprehensive physiotherapy department, providing gym sessions to at least 25 residents each day. “Our aim is to maximise functional ability and independence, focusing on mobility, strength and balance,” she explains. “The department has been exploring new technology recently, such as the ‘Able X’, a computer-based system that accelerates physical and cognitive rehabilitation. It has been really well received by those residents who have tried it.” Margot is an expert in stroke rehabilitation and recently co-authored a book on the subject called, ‘Your Guide to Exercise after Stroke’. She has just finished filming a video to complement the book and has produced two videos previously on post-stroke hand treatment and stretches. “There was a huge need for simple, easy-tounderstand advice for recovery of movement after stroke,” Margot says. “I was motivated to write the book after a local man had great difficulty finding

organising a memorial along the Rotary Walkway. She works hard to make things happen that are in the best interest of the community and will continue to push for the upgrading of local sporting grounds like William Green, Lloyd Elsmore and Barry Curtis Park. Sharon is Patron of the Howick Tennis club, Fencible Football club, Howick Croquet Club and supporter of Pakuranga Rugby club and a member of the Howick RSA and Howick Club.

clear instructions that a family member could use. So this book filled the gap!” These resources are now used throughout the Pacific and New Zealand, including in major hospitals. Margot is pictured here with Elizabeth Iro, who was at the time Rarotonga’s Minister of Health. “This meeting led to my daughter and I supporting Aitutaki Hospital with two container loads of equipment, including hospital beds, wheelchairs and gym equipment. At HBH, we are so lucky to have the latest equipment – it was wonderful to give others the same opportunity.”

Turning dreams into REALTY Professional advice to run your business Yes – Auctions do work – AND... Award winning salesperson, Marie Raos, is the perfect person to guide you through the process. “If people are preparing to bid, they need to talk to me. I have a special five-point strategy that is very useful when you’re bidding for your dream home. Buyers need to be prepared, ensure they have their building inspection completed, contracts checked with their solicitors and finance arranged before auction. They should meet with me either face to face or on the phone, as my strategy will calm your auction nerves,” she says. In her more than two decades with Ray White Marie has gathered dozens of prestigious awards. Marie believes in the Ray White group as a great agency with exceptional ethics. Marie grew up in Howick (her office is now where her father had his, when he owned Thomas Brydon Home Furnishers on the same Uxbridge Rd site). Having lived most of her adult life in the Eastern Bays, she knows the area and people well. “I know exactly where to buy for the longest

With her past experience in auditing, Carol Rigby has an interest in understanding how a business works. “In a fast changing environment, lots of people these days like to work with accounting software. We help them set up on MYOB or Xero online accounting so that the business runs efficiently,” she says. “We are Xero certified and use Xero and MYOB. We want to understand your goals and help work towards them,” says Carol. She helps new people going into business with a range of things – it includes working with cash flow, training them in accounting software, what they need to file, reviewing their business plans and generally holding their hand and helping them with what they need. Running her business as a professional chartered accountant for the last 21 years, she has worked with small to medium businesses, property investors as well as not-for-profit organisations. Relating to different cultures FAB Drivers Born in Palmerston North, Narina Bali moved to Auckland with her family when she was three. It was at that tender age she knew she wanted to be a lawyer. Narina would wear her dad’s oversized coat, shoes and tie, look up to her mother and say, “Mummy look, I am a lawyer just like papa”. Fast forward to today, Narina works as a senior solicitor at Wynyard Wood Lawyers. She practices in the areas of commercial property, residential property, trusts, wills and enduring powers of attorney. She loves the environment at Wynyard Wood as well as the supportive and friendly atmosphere. Being a local Indian female, practicing in law allows her to relate to her clients’ different cultures and background. “We all come from different places and have a different story to tell,” she says. Narina believes she is lucky to have a great support system in place – her parents and older sister are great role models. Her husband also plays a big part in encouraging Narina to strive for her goals.

“They’re friendly, affordable and will brighten your day!” Rachel and Nicki are the lovely ladies behind FAB Drivers who offer three affordable services catered to clients needs – FAB Companion Driving, FAB in-Home Assistance and FAB Excursions. Fab Companion Driving suits anyone wanting safe, personalised travel with extra care and attention. These friendly ladies will meet you at your door, offer assistance getting in and out of the car and safely deliver you to your destination. They will also accompany you to your appointment if required. Another FAB service offered by Rachel and Nicki is their In-Home assistance. Serving with goodwill Jim Donald (Independent) ➤➤Standing for Howick Local Board ➤➤Howick Subdivision Jim lives and works in the Howick Subdivision, where he serves “With Goodwill” – the words on Howick’s Coat-of-Arms. Jim was a dog handler and later Howick’s Community Constable with the New Zealand Police. He is a member of the local voluntary patrols and served 23 years as a Justice of the Peace. As the Howick Town Crier, he promotes economic perspectives for busi-

Aiming for positive change Bruce Kendall (Independent – Vote for Change) ➤➤Standing for Howick Local Board ➤➤Pakuranga Subdivision I’ve lived in Bucklands Beach for 50 years and my family has had good standing in the area since the 1920s. My sister Barbara and I partly attribute our Olympic Windsurfing Medal successes to the Bucklands Beach area’s unique features. I’ve coached sailors from a wide range of nationalities to win Olympic Medals. I’m self employed and involved in business in New Zealand and overseas and now wish to spend more time at home with my young family, using my local and global experience to shape my community toward a better future. Pakuranga has excellent potential to develop in a way that benefits our families, youth, work force, retirees and the local ecosystem. I am an active member of the Bucklands & Eastern Beaches Ratepayers Association and want to see ratepayers’ money spent wisely, making positive changes for our area.

Bruce Kendall.

The Bucklands Beaches Restoration and Upgrade Project FB page and a 300 strong public meeting triggered a Tonkin Taylor report paid for by Auckland City Council to assist Howick Council towards solutions. Rather than criticise our representatives for lack of action, I’m standing to drive solutions for this project and many other matters. I’ve joined Steve Udy and Wayne Huang because we each bring our own skill set and experiences to better represent a wider group. We can ensure better public consultation and can vote together, improving chances to make positive change. To ensure the best result for you, please vote for our Pakuranga Team and Vote For Change.

Passionate about Pakuranga’s people Connected to Steve Udy (Independent – Vote for Change)

➤➤Standing for Howick Local Board ➤➤Pakuranga Subdivision I am a long-time Pakuranga resident who is passionate about Pakuranga, the environment, and the people. Prior to returning to New Zealand I ran major businesses overseas. And on returning to NZ, I wanted to put something back into my local community. I served on the Howick Local

Steve Udy.

Board 2011 – 2016 and one of my major achievements was the completion of the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal. I was also concerned about the

impact the new Auckland Unitary Plan was going to have on our community and had myself approved as a commissioner to better understand and help residents. I feel that the situation will only get worse as developers try to push the boundaries. My extensive business experience has helped me question council expenditure on behalf of the ratepayer which I feel is a critical role for a Board Member. A little about my personal background - my family have been in Pakuranga from the 1850s with the family home-

steads still in Udys Road. I am an active Rotarian. I am also President of the Buckland’s Beach and Eastern Beaches Residents and Ratepayers Association. Both of these positions give me a good perspective of issues and opportunities within our Pakuranga community. A major driver for me this electoral term is that Bruce Kendall and Wayne Huang are also standing as independents for Pakuranga and together I think we can make a difference. I ask you to vote all three of us to drive a change on the Howick Board.

Safe integrated community Wayne Huang (Independent – Vote for Change)

➤➤Standing for Howick Local Board ➤➤Pakuranga Subdivision I’ve been a Pakuranga resident for 21 years and I am a University of Auckland master graduate with a young family. As principal of a successful popular local language school, along with past Local Board experience, I have a track record of delivering successful, costeffective, sensible, and practical outcomes. I champion bringing private sector discipline and

accountability to public office. I have shown my commitment to Pakuranga through local service, becoming the first Asian migrant on the Sunnyhills School Board of Trustees (20162019) and current Rear Com-

modore Power at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. I’ve also been Economic & Business and Ethnic Affairs Portfolios Leader for the Howick Local Board 2010—2013, deputy chairman of Manukau Council’s Botany Community Board, 2007—2010. I, as part of Vote for Change Team, want to build a safe, resilient, inclusive, integrated community and provide better public consultation through a more proactive collaborative approach to local issues. If elected I will advocate for improved transport infrastructure and for our main local busi-

nesses: building, hospitalities, service and retail. We would proactively support public facilities and engage with and support our many current recreational/sporting clubs, to promote healthy activities and interests for people of all ages. Our waterways, beaches and coastline assets (a defining character of our area), need to be restored or upgraded and protected for future generations. Please Vote For Change Team comprising of Steve Udy, Bruce Kendall and myself, so the three of us can best present your interests to the Local Board and Auckland City Council.

Mike Turinsky (Practical not Political)

➤➤Standing for Howick Local Board ➤➤Botany Subdivision Elected in 2017, Mike Turinsky stood for Local Board because, he says, council had neglected the development of transport, facilities, basic amenities, footpaths, parks, Mike Turinsky. safety and the local economy. “We must push Council to get the job done, not just talk.” says Mike. “Council should do the basics well. Residents want the Board to be practical, to work for them and get things done.” Mike brings 25 years of business experience as CEO of a local non-profit youth organisation since arriving from Alaska 15 years ago. Mike says he is fiscally conservative and won’t waste funds. Bringing new energy to the board, Mike says he achieved lighting at Barry Curtis Park (two years ahead of schedule). “Children at risk training in the dark, with parents using their cars to light up the field...that’s just not right.” Mike successfully advocated for footpaths on Ormiston Road, Point View Drive lighting for safety, illegal dumping, and safer crossings for Botany and Flat Bush schools/retirement villages. He works with the business association, Otara Waterways and the Youth Portfolio. A family man who lives and works locally, Mike coordinates youth mentoring at local schools. He personally mentors students at Botany College (weekly). ADVERTORIAL CP3044A

Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook: convenient, versatile and flexible T

he Mount Wellington Licensing Trust was established in 1952 and today the Trust employs around 200 people with an annual turnover of $20 million, gifting more than $1.5 million to the community each year. Within its investment portfolio the Mount Wellington Licensing Trust owns the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre and three years ago they acquired the Waipuna Conference Suites, Highbrook. Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre Director of Sales and Marketing Daron Gray says it was a strategic move to open the Waipuna Conference Suites, for the Mount Wellington Licensing Trust. “We were looking to branch out and expand our investment portfolio and when the opportunity arose, we knew it held great potential for us moving forward,” he says. As the Trust’s first stand alone conference centre, the Highbrook suites will be able to extend and complement the existing conference facilities at Waipuna Hotel. Situated in the heart of Highbrook at The Crossing, Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook offers three purpose-built rooms boasting cutting-edge design and a contemporary interior, this new

development will fulfil the need for a world-class facility that will further cement Highbrook Business Park’s status as coveted corporate destination. Built to host up to 200 people, the conference suites consist of three rooms that can be opened up or combined depending on numbers and the type of function. For example, the Panasonic boardroom is ideal for executive meetings of 20 people or fewer – plush chairs, padded walls and long, moveable desks ensure the ultimate in comfort. All rooms are equipped with state-of the art projection equipment that will enhance multimedia

presentations. Sound proof and chameleonlike dividers give the illusion of being walls and once a room is set up, total privacy is created. For lavish events, such as banquets and award ceremonies, all three rooms can be opened up easily. And for soirees and networking events, the foyer is furnished with well-stocked bar and plenty of room to mix and mingle. Bathed in natural light, thanks to its glass façade, this reception area provides a bright and welcoming social setting where nibbles and drinks can be served. Of course, wining and dining options are executed to the highest

standards, thanks to the resources and culinary expertise of the team at Waipuna Hotel, which, after 50 years, has established itself as an industry leader in the local dining scene. A spacious, on-site commercial kitchen is fitted out with all the latest appliances including a touchscreen oven and walk-in fridge, creating an inspiring setting for a creative chef to work his or her magic. Whatever the occasion, Waipuna has a long history of exceeding expectations through its highly experienced and dedicated team who have produced and hosted some of Auckland’s finest events.

“It’s essentially taking the successful formula we have at Waipuna Hotel and replicating it here in Highbrook,” says Daron. And thanks to the new Quest Serviced Apartments next door, hosting overseas visitors and large scale events is so convenient with Waipuna offering delegate packages from $60 + GST per person. FUNDRAISER

Howick locals’ ride for prostate health Four Howick men are riding in Pedal4Prostate, a charity cycling event that raises funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. They have fittingly named their team “The 8 ball” and will be riding in the e-bike category for this year’s event. One of the team members is Russel Dolan, a Howick businessman who runs a tree care business and supports the local Howick Coast Guard as a volunteer in his spare time. Russel has a huge passion for helping his community, family and friends in any way he can. Accompanying him is Damon Jacobs, a former Howick/ Pakuranga resident, and Rodney and his father Tony, who has had terminal prostate cancer for eight years. A few years ago Damon was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer and was given a very short amount of time to live. However, his drive and determination to beat this and be around to watch his kids grow allowed him to battle on.

Damon formed a bond with Rodney and Tony when he became someone they could talk to when learning to cope with the fact Tony has a terminal illness, despite struggling with different cancers. Through it all, the four men share one very important thing in common; they want to raise awareness about men’s health and to encourage regular and early testing for prostate cancer, which is why they will be competing together in the Pedal4Prostate event next month. The event builds on the success of the previous two years and aims to be bigger than ever in 2019, as they are hoping to have 260 riders on the track. The 196 cyclists who took part in last year’s event raised more than $137,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, to help increase public awareness of prostate cancer and improve New Zealandbased research with its diagnosis and treatment outcomes. ➤➤ The event is on Sunday October 13 at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park.

M

ore people are adding their voice to a call for action to prevent a popular east Auckland beach from experiencing an “ecological disaster”. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is pushing the Government to close Cockle Bay Beach to shellfish gathering for five years so its cockle population can recover from over-harvesting. An official survey by the Ministry of Fisheries in 2011 found there was an estimated 72 million cockles at the beach. Subsequent surveys found the number of cockles fell to 54 million in 2013, then to about 33m in 2014, and 21.5m in 2016, before rising last year to about 43m. Ross says he questions the accuracy of the survey carried out in 2018 given the beach’s cockle population was rapidly trending downwards. Serious action needs to be taken to prevent its cockles from being “wiped out”, he says. “This is about the long-term survival of the beach. It would be a travesty if we stood by and did nothing,” says Ross. “If we don’t close the beach to cockle gathering soon there’s a risk its cockle population could be totally devastated. “This precious natural resource is too important to our local community to do nothing and hope everything turns out well. We can’t take that risk.” There’s a seasonal harvesting limit in place at the beach of 50 cockles per person per day, but there’s no

limit to how many people can collect cockles at it each day. Ross is working with a group of concerned local residents on the issue including Brian Robertson, Barry Wood and Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Matthew Brajkovich. All four men attended a recent briefing at Ross’s Botany electorate office with officials from the Ministry of Fisheries to learn more about the survey process and to ask for another one to be carried out. Brajkovich says a sustainable model needs to be created “so we can avoid an ecological disaster” at the beach. “The question is how do we get to sustainable levels [of cockles] and what are those levels? It’s a real concern that it’s taken years to even

get the conversation going [on this issue].” Ross says he’s discussed the issue with Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash and asked him questions about it in the Parliament. He and the Cockle Bay residents want the Ministry to conduct another survey of the beach’s cockle population to see if it’s in line with the number of cockles recorded in 2018. Robertson says honorary fishery officers have been educating people collecting cockles at the beach since 2008 “to no avail”. The beach is visible from his home and on some days he’s seen more than 600 people gathering cockles there, he says. “A number that big cannot be sustainable.”

Thinking of volunteering? I

f you are thinking of volunteering you might want to think about what types of activities you enjoy, what skills and experience you have to offer, what causes are important to you, and, how much time you would be willing to commit – this will give you direction. If there is a particular organisation you would like to volunteer with, don’t be afraid to contact them and ask if they have any volunteer positions which you could apply for. Depending upon your interest you could approach different types of organisations such as:

➤ Education providers – they may need volunteers to help with fundraising, governance, maintenance and upkeep of property or information technology support. ➤ Youth Organisations – they may be looking for mentors, activities organisers, drivers and more. ➤ Animal Welfare groups – they may want people to do hands–on care of animals or advocating for animal rights. ➤ Environmental and Conservation groups – they may

be nationwide or have a local focus. ➤ Professional Interest, Cultural or Creative groups may need volunteers for organising events, governance, professional advice, marketing and publicity or management. However, volunteering at Citizens Advice Bureau worked for me. CAB has been serving the community for over 40 years and this amazing service is provided by volunteers. It offers volunteers a great opportunity for personal learning and development. I have been volunteering

at CAB Pakuranga from 2015 and I haven’t looked back since. Volunteering here has helped me learn new skills, knowledge and gain experience. It helps to meet new people and form life long friendships. Plus, making an invaluable difference. All this while having fun! At the moment, CAB Pakuranga/ Botany is looking for volunteers to work as Interviewers. If you are a good communicator, problem solver, confident in using a computer, eager to learn and work in a multi cultural organisation contact Louise on 576 9170. You will not

OPINION

Measles outbreak confirms need for vaccination targets New Zealand has reached over 1000 cases of measles this year which raises a number of serious questions that the Government must answer. National believes in having robust targets to ensure that as many people as possible are vaccinated against preventable diseases and illnesses such as measles. However, the current government removed targets for vaccinations and a range of other important health measures when they were elected to office. In light of the recent

measles epidemic, this is a reminder of the importance of such targets as it allows the public to hold the Government to account on important health measures. The fact is immunisation rates under National were improving. This was due to these health targets, which keep the Ministry, Pharmac and medical professionals accountable for ensuring New Zealanders are protected from dangerous diseases. When the new government scrapped these targets, they took their eye off the ball and the sector

followed suit. As this continues, not only should the Government take immediate action to reinstate these targets, but they should also rapidly authorise pharmacists, who already vaccinate for the flu, to be able to administer the measles vaccine. The Ministry should increase the resource to DHB’s with outbreaks so that they can reach out via schools, clinics and workplaces to administer vaccinations. The outbreak is also a reminder for everyone to check their own vaccination records to

A fresh look for Spring – call the experts

ADVERTORIAL CP1521A

pring is a perfect time to touch up the exterior and the interior of your home. After a long winter, the exterior of your home is a bit stressed out and needs some tender loving care, which will add to your home value and appeal. As the spring to-do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But with spring being the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing, may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Greg Mustill employs an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until sud-

denly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish. Importantly, we don’t keep our customers waiting.” As an added bonus for customers, East Auckland Painting Ltd has a great all-year round special and is offering FREE pre-paint washing with all exterior repaints (conditions apply). “In fact, now’s a good time to plan ahead and take advantage of this special,” says Greg. And, as always before painting, Greg consults thoroughly with clients as to colour, the type of paint most suited to the job and the number of coats required. “We use all major paint brands,

such as Wattyl, Dulux and Resene, and work with oil and water-based paints. We also advise on the correct sheen to use as this can make a big difference in high traffic areas, wet rooms, or where exterior walls are exposed to the worst of the elements.” All East Auckland Painting Ltd., clients’ receive an on-site consultation and FREE, written, noobligation quote so there are no surprises. A fastidious tradesman, Greg is proud of his team’s reputation for working efficiently and leaving everything clean and tidy at the end of the day. “Whether we are painting a ceiling, refreshing interior rooms or tackling a full exterior repaint, we take pride in our workmanship.” To give you house a facelift with a fresh coat of paint, call Greg at: East Auckland Painting Ltd, P: 536-4356 M: 027- 619 2619 E: office@eastaucklandpainting.co.nz W: www.eastaucklandpainting.co.nz

he number of residential properties sold across New Zealand in August decreased by -6.1 per cent from the same time last year to 5959 (down from 6346), the lowest level of sales for seven months. That’s according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). For New Zealand excluding Auckland, the number of properties sold decreased by -6.9 per cent when compared to the same time last year (to 4198 down from 4,509). In Auckland, the number of properties sold in August decreased by -4.1 per cent year-on-year (to 1761 down from 1837) the lowest in 4 months. Regions with the greatest decrease in annual sales volumes during August were: ➤➤Southland: -33.2 per cent (from 187 to 125 – 62 fewer houses) ➤➤Hawke’s Bay: -18.4 per cent (from 223 to 182 – 41 fewer houses) – the lowest number of sales in 19 months ➤➤Taranaki: -16.6 per cent (from 187 to 156 – 31 fewer houses). Regions with the greatest increase in annual sales volumes during August were: ➤➤ Tasman: +12.3 per cent (from 57 to 64 – 7 more houses) – the

highest for the month of August in 3 years ➤➤Bay of Plenty: +7.7 per cent (from 441 to 475 – 34 more houses) – the highest for the month of August in 3 years ➤➤Nelson: +2.9 per cent (from 68 to 70 – 2 more houses) – the highest for the month of August in 3 years. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Despite a good uplift in sales during July, August saw sales volumes fall by -6.1 per cent from the same time last year – the lowest level of sales for seven months. This was a bit of a surprise given the strength of July’s figures, however, an extremely wet August across most parts of the country and the past three months having the lowest number of new listings of any consecutive three months since records began in 2007 look to have been contributing factors. “Additionally, we’ve had 3624 fewer new listings than at the same time last year. With limited choice in many parts of the country in terms of new listings, we’re hearing from a number of agents that people are waiting to purchase before they put their own property on the market, which is slowing the whole market down. ➤➤Turn to page 15

There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. To prepare outdoor areas for every weather condition no matter how adverse, Shades Direct should be the first port of call as it specialises in outdoor awning solutions that add space, style and value to the home. Designed and engineered on New Zealand shores, Shades Direct’s range of quality and versatile outdoor products is suited to both commercial and residential applications. Shades Direct most popular products are the Outsider and the Clearspan Outsider awning systems.

Fabricated from a mixture of marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider or Clearspan Outsider awning doesn’t fit in with your home’s décor, you’re in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of colours and styles including outdoor screens (both clear

PVC and Mesh fabrics), shade sails and retractable folding arm awnings. The best part about the service at Shades Direct is that you’re dealing directly with the manufacturer and because of this, prices have never been better! The team also offer a FREE, no-obligation measure and quote and are happy to offer advice on the best outdoor solution for your home. By installing an awning from Shades Direct and enhancing the home, families will soon reap the benefits of having more space to do the outdoor things they love. Don’t wait, contact Shades Direct agent Scott on 021 957 535 or free phone 0800 SHADES (0800 742 337). For further information visit www.shadesdirect.co.nz

Listings impact volumes ➤➤From page 14 Hopefully as confidence starts to improve over the coming months, we’ll start to see this flow through to new listings which leads to more choice for buyers.” Sales volumes for the Auckland region fell by -4.1 per cent when compared to August 2018, but breaking this down showed volumes actually only fell in Auckland City (-14.0 per cent), North Shore City (-13.0 per cent) and Manukau City (-5.4 per cent). They increased by 43 per cent in Papakura District, 16.2 per cent in Franklin District, 13.8 per cent in Rodney District and 0.4 per cent in Waitakere City showing how mixed the Auckland region is.

House prices continue to rise

Median house prices across New Zealand increased by 5.5 per cent in August to $580,000, up from $550,000 in August 2018. These results are in line with the REINZ House Price Index (HPI) which saw property values increase 2.9 per cent annually.

Properties For Sale, Renovations, Interior/Exterior, Landscaping, Flooring, Bathrooms, Kitchens...

Median price increases for New Zealand excluding Auckland were even stronger, increasing by 9.5 per cent to new record high of $498,000, up from $455,000 in August last year. Median house prices in Auckland fell by -3.5 per cent to $820,000 – down from $850,000 at the same time last year. “Median house prices across the country continue to increase with a 5.5 per cent lift across the country to $580,000. Regionally, 12 out of 16 regions saw an increase in median prices since the same time last year, and 8 of those regions saw doubledigit growth,” says Norwell. “Looking at the Auckland region, prices fell overall by -3.5 per cent which can partly be attributed to a fall in the number of million-dollar plus properties (from 34.8 per cent to 31.7 per cent). Breaking the region down, median prices fell by -10.5 per cent year-on-year in Manukau City to $770,000 the lowest price for the area for 19 months. However, on the flip side, prices on the North Shore increased on an annual basis by 8.6 per cent to $999,000 the highest price in 5 months.”

Macleans College team retains golf trophy The Macleans College golf team had a repeat of their 2018 success in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Golf Competition which was played recently at the Cromwell Golf Course in Central Otago. The team members, Jimmy Zheng (Hillary House), Vivian Lu (Batten), Jarrod Millar (Mansfield) and Henry Wang (Batten), had a combined handicap of +8. They won the 36 hole event with a score of 437, an impres-

sive 10 shots clear of the runners up, Burnside High School. There were 16 teams competing in the event. Each had to play a qualifying competition in their province. The competition was amongst the provincial champions to find the best secondary school golf team in New Zealand. The successful weekend was also a personal triumph for Vivian Lu who won the individual competition.

ld time apprehension New Zealanders held before All Blacks versus Springboks contests returns when the two clash in Japan on Saturday night to kick off their Rugby World Cup campaign. Fear even, given South Africa’s improvement in recent times when too many ageing, injury-prone All Blacks have creaked rather than peaked. Sure, as head coach Steve Hansen reminds us, Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter made miraculous comebacks from injuries in previous triumphant World Cup displays in 2011 and 2015 respectively. But can Richie Mo’unga, Beauden Barrett and Sonny Bill Williams perform with the five-eighths perfection of Carter and Ma’a Nonu in 2015 against rush defences that kill enterprising back play? I also share the fear of many others; games will be won and lost on referees’ interpretation of the off-side laws. Having written this column before the naming of the All Blacks team to play South Africa because of print deadlines, I can only hope it will be similiar with few exceptions to that which trounced poor Tonga 92-7. Certainly the starting backline should be similar although Ben Smith’s brilliance at fullback may have the selectors debating whether to return him there and

Beauden Barrett to first-five ahead of Richie Mo’unga or return Smith to right wing ahead of the lively Sevu Reece. Most likely Aaron Smith will have been named as the starting halfback despite PJ Perenara’s strong performance against Tonga. With Ryan Crotty and Anton LienartBrown combining so beautifully in that game, they should be retained before introducing the brittle Sonny Bill Williams and Jack Goodhue against weaker teams. Under the coaching of Rassie Erasmus Rugby Championship winners South Africa are playing to their full potential with strong combative forwards and smart and fast backs. The same can be said for England while Six Nations champions Wales, Ireland and hot-andcold Australia can all upset the best. Although Ireland lead New Zealand 2-1 in their last three clashes, I believe South Africa and England pose the greater threat to wresting the Webb Ellis Cup from them. Champion lock Brodie Retallick hopes that he will be fully recovered from his dislocated shoulder to play the quarter-finals. Even if he does, he won’t be match-fit after Bok lock RJ Snyman crippled him with a dubious off the ball tackle which went unpunished in this year’s 16-all draw. It says much for the Boks locking

strength that the powerful Snyman came off the reserves bench in that game and in muscular hooker Malcolm Marx and loosies Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Duane Vermeulen they have world class players. The clash between those loosies and Sam Cane, Ardie Savea and Kieran Read should be as intriguing as that between Marx and the mobile Dane Coles. In Faf de Klerk and Handre Pollard, the Boks have smart, experienced pivots, along with strong centres Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel and clever fullback Willie le Roux. Add dangerous wings Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mapimpi and they are a real threat to add to their 1995 and 2007 triumphs to challenge New Zealand’s record three. However England, Wales and Ireland will also fancy their chances, as will the Aussies who tend to only remember their wins. Which, of course, requires excellence when they look far back to when they last held the Bledisloe Cup. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer.

Ironman takes on China Local ironman legend Cameron Brown is off to Quzhou China to compete in the Tri-Factor World Championship this week, an event he won last year. This year he has also taken on an ambassador role for this leg, part of the greater Tri-Factor Asian Series, a multi-country ITU sanctioned Triathlon tour. The World Championship (final) will be held this weekend in Quzhou an ancient mountainous province in South-west China. The TRI-Factor races across Asia and includes legs in The Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, with the winner crowned the ‘fastest in Asia’. The Times caught up with Cameron just before he left and he detailed his ambassadorial duties which includes attending the official ceremony, running local triathlon camps and mentoring local athletes. Brown has been overwhelmed by the event’s popularity “This year it’s the final of the series

and the race sold out very quickly so its great for the event organizers seeing the growth”. Competitors can chose from enduro, standard, sprint, and a standard distance duathlon. Asia is no longer considered a sleeping giant in endurance sport, and the tour has expected unprecedented growth in recent times. When asked what is motivating Brown to keep competing at an elite level, despite being at an age where most athletes have wound down their careers or joined a masters’ series, Cameron says he is “still loving the training and racing so why give up yet? You’re a long time retired so I’ll keep going as long as I can and also try to stay injury free”. There is also no time for a rest once the Southern Hemisphere summer programme kicks in shortly, as Brown explains, “My big aim before Christmas is Ironman Western Australia on December 1, then it will be the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman In January, and Ironman New Zealand in March.”

Four cycling golds for amazing Ruby ■ BY JIM BIRCHALL

S

aint Kentigern wunderkind Ruby Spring is 13 years old, and in her third year of cycling. She recently cleaned up the medals at the Northern and Southern under 15 cycling events. After following her father and brother into the sport, the Whitford youngster is destined for greatness if her recent gold medal haul is anything to go by. Competing in the criterium, hill climb, and individual time trial, Ruby blew away the competition to claim gold in all three disciplines. Her next individual event is the New Zealand Secondary Schools champs (NZSS) in Palmerston North, before travelling to Invercargill for the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland and then it’s on to the NZSS Track Champs also held in the southern city. As if that wasn’t enough, Ruby is also a talented triathlete. She won the school’s triathlete of the year award, placing third in the junior girls at the NZSS champs earlier in

the year. “Ruby is a very determined athlete who works very hard at her sport. She hopes to make a career

out of cycling by being part of an overseas pro team,” says Lynne Scutt, Saint Kentigern College premier team sports manager.
