Police celebrate Diwali with dance ■ BY FARIDA MASTER
P
erforming the bhangra dance in front of a small group of colleagues and respected members of the community is harder than performing for 10,000 people at the big Diwali event on the weekend. So said community liaison officer Tineke Laing at the Diwali celebration hosted by Counties Manukau Police on Tuesday afternoon. Colleagues at the event included police officers sporting Indian outfits and turbans with some of the officers draped in a sari worn over their uniform. Members of the Corrections department had also turned up in Indian regalia. District commander superintendent John Tims addressed the event saying that the Indian festival of Diwali is all about reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future. works with the police, he said: “We can get fantastic results when we work together and Gandhi Nivas (early domestic intervention programme) is a good example of better outcomes.” Sergeant Gurpreet Arora, district ethnic services coordinator who organised the event with constable Satvir Sen, spoke about Gandhi Nivas helping more than 300 men in the short time it has been in existence with the help of Ranjna Patel who spearheaded the novel project. “We are now looking forward to acquire more support from other agencies and the Government of course,” he said. The lighting of the traditional oil lamp, a classical Indian dance performance of Bharatanatyam by Ambika Krishnamurthy dedicated to the courage shown by the Counties Manukau Police; followed by a very energetic bhangra dance (folk dance from Punjab) by police officers spoke a lot about coming together to celebrate the differences in the community.
