ne hundred years of helping vulnerable children and their families to stand up and be strong in the face of adverse childhood experiences, is a huge milestone. Celebrating the centenary of Stand Children’s Services at the Children’s Village at Half Moon Bay were members of local service organisations including Freemasons, Probus, Rotary and Zonta who have supported Stand over the years Over 10 decades Stand, formerly known as the Children’s Health Camp, has transformed lives of children from 7-11 who are at significant risk of harm as a consequence of the environment in which they are being raised. Pene Frost, regional manager Pou Toko who has been with the charity for over 40 years, is an institution in her own right. She expressed her gratitude to therapeutic staff, cooks, leadership team, volunteers, coaches and tireless doctors on the occasion. “It is 100 years of collective service to the community and I’d like to thank everyone for their kindness,” she said. “One hundred years ago in Turakina, in the middle of a farmer’s paddock, under the shelter of army tents, 55 children experienced the very first Children’s Health Camp. It was not until 1937 that the move was made to establish permanent camps across New Zealand,” she said.

The current facility was built in 2004 from the profits of the sale of 17 acres of land that was occupied by the old Health Camp. “Many of you will remember the penny for post, penny for health through the sale of health stamps. Unfortunately, letter writing is a past art and we no longer receive funds though post.” Talking to the Times, Pene looked back at the time when children were at the health camp mainly due to health reasons - asthma, bad eyesight, diabetes, scabies or hair lice.
“But now they are here due to trauma caused by emotional, physical or sexual abuse,” she said. “Children come from harmful relationships and there is a big impact of drugs, violence and disruption to family life. Sometimes a child has been witness to the dad banging the mum’s head against a wall and there are memories that won’t go away. They’ve seen their sibling end their life and it’s important to make them understand that it is not their fault. Children are emotionally, mentally and sexually scarred and it takes a much longer
time to heal,” she observed. “Sadly, children are not children anymore as there is so much pornography and violence in the media and the ability to access violence in the name of entertainment. At Stand they not only work with children but also with families. Stand also runs the grief and loss programme called Seasons for grown-ups. “We do parenting since the child will go back to the same family environment and sometimes parents have their own trauma history that they carry into their parenting,” pointed out Pene “Right from the first moment they engage with our social workers, they are treated with kindness. Children are in a safe space and we teach them how to make safe choices. “Most children are there for a span of five weeks and then ready to make a transition. Sometimes it may take up to two years to make a difference but the stay at the village is not at one stretch. They can come back after a while. “Our children are our treasures, and at the end of the day if our relationship has made a difference in their lives, we have all achieved greatness.”

security arrangements, the display will be vulnerable to vandalism,” said Newbury. “The Trust are not confident that the standard of the display from previous years can be guar-
anteed and do not wish to provide a substandard display.” She said it had also become apparent that the group of volunteers the Trust had been able to tap into for previous years
had dwindled. “The demands on those few that can be mustered would be beyond what should be expected,” she said. “The Trust is disappointed to make this decision at the 11th hour but the pressure to have the display in place for Midnight Madness was too great, and having the space free for alternative uses, was more important.” The HVA is working on arrangements to have a Santa grotto included in Midnight Madness 2019 planning.

Howick Village Association (HVA) manager Jane Newbury said the Christmas Light Trust had reluctantly decided to cancel the display this year. ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL Divisive artwork ‘Kid Justice’, located on a plinth in Crawford Reserve, Howick, has been vandalised again. The Times visited on Monday and noticed the $55,000 sculpture by artist Erin Forsyth Kid Justice had been vandalised for the third time. A foot was damaged in March, and the left arm removed in August. The current attack is the third on the suffrage-marking statue since it’s unveiling in December. Auckland Council has been approached for comment.

popular Apothecary restaurant in Howick, heard about the flames engulfing the facility from his wife who saw the fire on the news. According to a Fire & Emergency Northern Communications spokesperson, 15 pumps were employed at the height
of the blaze, helped by aerial support and a command unit. By Monday afternoon, one appliance remained at the scene turning over debris and containing hotspots. Two fire investigators were on site conducting inquiries as to the fire’s origin. Their investi-
gation is on-going. Police also attended the scene, largely for traffic control purposes. Waters estimates his loss at about $70,000. He believes the incident is starting to look more like arson, and he has been asked by Police to provide an impact statement.

Students become scientists for a day
Santa parade assembles cast of thousands
A kids’ lab has this week been set up at the University of Auckland to allow primary school children to conduct science experiments in real-life labs. More than 450 Auckland primary students – including children from Farm Cove Intermediate School an Pakuranga Heights School have become scientists for the day in the University’s School of Chemical Sciences. Seven schools are taking part over three days. The children, aged between 6 and 12, will carry out hands-on, safe and colourful experiments under the supervision of scientists from the University. Locally organised in partnership with chemical company BASF, the programme provides primary school children from a range of deciles with the opportunity to explore the wonders of chemistry in daily life. The children will experiment with: ■■ Super Absorber – super absorber polymers demonstrate that some chemicals are able to hold several times their weight in water. ■■ Insta Worms – instant thermochromic worms allows kids to observe the relationship between heat and thermochromic dye and how polymers are formed. ■■ Recycling Dirty Water – different methods of separation are used to remove impurities from wastewater. ■■ Colours in Nature – kids learn how colour from vegetables, fruits, or flowers can be extracted, and that this natural colour changes easily with variations in acidic or basic level. The University of Auckland’s Dr Peter Swedlund, who co-presents the annual event with laboratory manager Katrina Graaf, says there is a budding scientist in every child. “Engaging students with relevant science experiments opens their eyes that science relates to everyone and can be the start of a lifelong passion,” Dr Swedlund says.

hen Howick welcomes in Christmas, it doesn’t do it by halves and this coming festive season is no exception. It will be a tinsel-tinted spectacular. Following on from Midnight Madness tomorrow which opens the Christmas shopping run, and the lighting of the tree on Stockade Hill, the Howick Santa Parade officially begins – as the song says – the most wonderful time of the year. It will be the 66th edition of the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday, December 8 and it promises to be bigger and brighter than ever when Santa Claus arrives as the headline act of a colourful cast of thousands. Howick Santa Parade is one of east Auckland’s major mustsee events and it’s more than a street parade this year. “We have entertainment on our main stage in Picton Street from 11am until the start of the parade at 2.30pm,” says chief elf and event manager Bo Burns, of the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust. “Howick Santa Parade Day is all about showcasing the wonderfully-talented and dedicated people, groups, schools and organisations we have in east Auckland.

“There will be 60 groups in the parade and six entertainment performances on the stage from 11am, making it the biggest Christmas parade for participants, with thousands involved.” Burns suggests families and friends make a day of it by taking in the exciting shows and enjoying the hospitality venues and carnival atmosphere throughout Howick Village. OPINION
Delivering park-and-ride in Botany is critical I hear all the time from people that they want to see better roads and public transport. I couldn’t agree more. Our local community, like the rest of Auckland, has unfortunately suffered from a chronic under-investment in public transport infrastructure in the past. We are finally seeing construction on the Eastern Busway taking shape and plans for the Botany to Airport Rapid Transit solution along Te Irirangi Drive are also coming along. It can take more than an hour to drive from Botany to downtown Auckland during rush hour and the same amount of time coming back. When complete, the Eastern Busway will see travel from Botany to Britomart cut to less than 40 minutes. Our Botany to Airport plans will see the southern parts of Botany connected with a rapid tran-
sit solution to the employment growth precincts of Manukau and the Airport. The key to getting people out of cars and onto new infrastructure is going to be making it easier for them to get to the future Botany Station. That’s where our future parkand-ride building at Botany comes in. I’ve been pushing the Transport Minister and Auckland Transport this year to work on providing a park-and-ride in Botany as part of the two transport projects. The Minister has now instructed his officials working on the Botany to Airport project to investigate park-and-ride as part of this work. My vision for a park-and-ride facility would see a ground level bus interchange, first floor parking for shoppers and then several floors of parking for public transport users.
Jami-Lee’s JOTTINGS With Jami-Lee Ross
The cost of building this facility will be partially offset by putting an appropriate commercial or residential development at the top. The existing parking in Botany is privately owned and limited. People who use these two public transport services deserve somewhere safe and accessible to park their vehicles. Locals want better public transport and they want it to be easy to use. It is possible to reduce congestion by getting cars off the road, deliver faster public transport, and provide a safe place to park. Park-and-ride is a critical piece of this puzzle. ➤➤Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

nbelievable is how Dannemora resident Ethan Korewha describes the moment he heard that he’d been cast as the lead in the National Youth Theatre Company’s (NYTC) latest production The Wizard of Oz, opening on Friday November 29. The 21-year-old is thrilled to play the Wizard. “It’s an absolute privilege,” he says about being part of the enchanting musical drawn from the all-time classic MGM screenplay that celebrates its 80th bir thday this year. “I had auditioned for the Tinman but then decided to give the lead role a shot. I didn’t expect to be playing the character of the Wizard and Professor Marvel in two of the shows. I love being part of the theatre so much that I’d be happy even if I got into the chorus,” he says. Ethan, who has been associated with the NYTC since he was 14, has acted in 17 shows to-date with the NYTC. These include a variety of roles in classics including Annie, Cats, Shrek, Oliver, Peter Pan, Aladdin and Pinocchio. It didn’t take Ethan long to realise that if you want to be in the cast in the NYTC’s two productions a year, you have to be quick. Till recently, it took three minutes for the registrations to fill up. The last time he was half an hour late to register interest for the Cats production, he found himself on a long waiting list. The Wizard of Oz is NYTC’s 30th production. The charitable trust has been working since 2004 to bring confidence and life skills to young people through the dramatic theatrical arts. Ethan is particularly proud of winning a scholarship in 2015 for his role in Seussical. Twice a year, the NYTC team selects two people to receive the scholarship. To qualify they must

he recent New Zealand Wushu champs at St Johns had a silver lining for Whitford local Bronte Coluccio. She picked up three silver medals across the Taolu discipline which encompasses staff, broadsword and bare hand fighting styles. The win was just another achievement for the talented 26-year-old, who only took up Wushu (Kung Fu) 18 months ago, and spent 6 months of that, injured. She is also an experienced aerobics coach, spending 20 hours per week training local young-
sters to international competition level. She represented New Zealand in Aerobic Gymnastics for many years at numerous international events before shifting her sights towards coaching and judging the sport. Bronte has encompassed her athletic background into stunt work for both US and New Zealand film and TV productions. She recently appeared on popular local show Wellington Paranormal, and started her career in the industry with several appearances on the American comedy horror television series Ash vs Evil Dead which stars veteran movie monster hunter Bruce Cambell as Ash.
She is currently working as a stunt woman on an undisclosed large-scale production, and takes inspiration from Kiwi Zoe Bell, who is recognised as the gold standard for female stunt performers. In regards to Bell, Bronte said she admires her as a woman “who has basically made it” (in Hollywood films). In the near future Bronte would like to be working internationally in film and has taken several trips to Los Angeles and coupled training with industry networking. She “would love to see more women in martial arts” and hopes her achievements act as an inspiration to young women looking to take up combat sports.

Anannya Chaudry whose subject was ‘Derogatory Speech’. Devi Subramaniam who was lead judge also provided the contestants with some adjudication comments and remarked on the “very high standard that the students had achieved”. The contest is held annually and this year was organised by College teachers Tom Stacey and Ann Botha in conjunction with Rotary’s Youth Committee director Rob Mouncey. It commemorates former long serving Rotarian and past President Brian Hanlon’s contribution to the Community and to Education. Rotary President Mike Abercrombie said that “the contest is one of the highlights of the
Rotary year particularly in relation to the many Youth support projects that the club undertakes and it is really pleasing to see the confidence that these young people demonstrated in presenting their speeches.” The awards for the night included gift vouchers from Paper Plus in Howick with the winner also receiving the Brian Hanlon Trophy. President Mike Abercrombie concluded the evening saying, “Rotary people are involved in many different community projects while having a great social time together so anyone interested in becoming a member should contact membership director Ian Fox Mob 021662 896 or email ian@fox.co.nz.”

owick Local Board is once again shining a light on Christmas with the switching on of the festive lights on the tree at Stockade Hill on Friday night. In what has become an annual tradition as part of the Midnight Madness event, the lights on the tree and down the main street will be turned on signalling to all the little ones that Christmas is just around the corner. The lights are due to be
turned on 8.30pm at Stockade Hill. The Rotunda in the main street will be lit up as well as the motif light displays on the street poles again this year adding a lovely ambience to the village. Thanks again to Howick Village Optometrists, HelloWorld, 101 Design and Marie Raos and Family for kindly sponsoring the lighting of the four main trees in the village.

4 — Midnight Madness in Howick Village 2019
It’s that time of the year again M
idnight Madness in Howick Village is nearly here – Friday November 22. The Village will once again be alive with entertainment and activities for our annual preChristmas shopping extravaganza. This event runs from 9am on Friday November 22 and continues through the evening until midnight as a family and community occasion. Midnight Madness has grown exponentially over the past 26 years and requires road closures to host the 30,000+ people who come to enjoy some wonderful pre-Christmas shopping bargains, music, entertainment and the general vibe that the event offers. This is your chance to get a head start on your Christmas shopping and enjoy the excitement that only Midnight Madness can offer. As well as our superb retail stores, cafes and restaurants, our iconic markets will be open from 6pm, hosting a full contingent of stalls, street food ven-
dors, artisan foods, produce and an extensive array of arts and crafts. There is something for everyone! A number of special guests will be mingling with the crowd and available for photo opportunities. A new addition to our entertainment line up this year, is our Silent Disco and a Kid’s Zone. Both should be crowd-pleasers, especially among our younger community. Bring the children to enjoy our new Kombi train ride and have a go on the popular animal cycles! Look out for our fabulous prize packages in our Shop and Win promotion that starts on November 22 – including a wonderful two-night stay for four people at Riverside Matakana and a fishing charter on the Hauraki Gulf for four people. Lock Friday November 22 into your calendars – we’ll see you there… ■■ Jane Newbury, manager Howick Village Business Association

Wills and enduring powers of attorney
Huntington Park resident Jocelyn Galloway, left, and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross are concerned about the danger posed by speeding vehicles in the area. Photo supplied
COMMUNITY
Speeding drivers upset quiet community A
lmost 90 per cent of respondents to a public survey say they’re concerned about the danger speeding motorists pose to their east Auckland community. These are among the findings of a survey sent to Huntington Park residents by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who says he’s heard from numerous locals about issues related to unsafe driving. Ross recently wrote to people living in Huntington Park and asked for their views on whether there’s a safety problem in the area caused by speeding and unsafe driving. He also asked if residents wanted the Howick Local Board to investigate options to slow cars down. Almost 90 of respondents answered yes to that question.
Huntington Park Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Brian Brown says he often sees cars speeding through the area. Something needs to be done to address the problem before someone is hurt in a crash, he says. “It’s especially bad in the late afternoons. If you drive at 60km/h on Huntington Drive, it seems very fast.” Ross says his survey was prompted by the many locals who raised concerns with him about motorists using Huntington Drive as a “rat run”, or cut-through, between Dannemora and East Tamaki. “There’s a large number of families and senior citizens living in that area so it’s important to ensure our local roads are safe to use,” he says. “The new Howick Local Board has more
than $7 million of ratepayer funding available for local transport works and road safety improvements. “I’m writing to the Board with the results of this survey to inform its members about the views local residents have about speeding vehicles.” Brown says he thinks a speed camera would be an effective solution and he also wants the speed limit lowered from 50km/h to 40km/h. Resident Jocelyn Galloway agrees there’s a problem and says it’s worse first thing in the morning and late afternoon. “There are children everywhere here and when I’ve got to take the kids to the park, I get a bit nervous. “I get fed up [with speeding vehicles]. You buy in a lovely area and then get this. It’s disappointing.”
Are you thinking of setting up or updating your Will? A do-it-yourself Will may suit simple family circumstances. A family lawyer will offer more certainty in ensuring your final wishes are carried out, which can extend to preparing documents to be used in Court if your will is contested, and the cost is less than the costs incurred in having the will validated by the Court. Such documents are likely more secure if held by the lawyer. At the same time think about setting up an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). Most of us think we will be fit and well until the moment we die, however, this may not always be the case. There are two sorts of EPAs: Personal Care and Welfare or Property (money and assets). We could become physically or mentally incapacitated and need help in managing one, or both, of these areas of our lives. This is where your nominated attorney, a person or people you can trust to do things for you, comes in. There are many ways to define who the attorneys are, when they can act, what limitations you want on what they can do, etc. You may want to consider “successor” attorneys to ensure continuity of the document if an attorney is not able to continue for any reason. Many retirement or health care organisations insist on EPA being in place before they offer their
services. Although there are ways to create a document yourself, it will still need legal assistance to become active. Your family lawyer knows how to put your needs into words. The critical thing is to do this while you still have the capacity to do so; a lawyer will not set in place an EPA for someone thought to be incapable. In that case time and money must be spent to have the Court appoint attorneys all of which might well have been avoided. A property EPA can come into effect before you lose mental capacity but a Personal Care and Welfare EPA can only be actioned if a medical professional decides you have become ‘mentally incapable’. ➤➤This Solutions Column has been compiled by Graeme and is a regular editorial from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau. New record median house price ➤➤Waikato with a 9.6 per cent increase to $570,000 up from $520,000 at the same time last year ➤➤Bay of Plenty with a 7.8 per cent increase to $620,000 up from $575,000 at the same time last year ➤➤Hawke’s Bay with a 16.3 per cent increase to $535,000 up from $460,000 at the same time last year ➤➤Manawatu/Wanganui with a 20.9 per cent increase to $407,500 up from $337,000 at the same time last year ➤➤Otago with a 15.8 per cent increase to $550,000 up from $475,000 at the same time last year. Additionally, a record equal median high was recorded in Canterbury of $465,000, the same price as in October 2018. The only region to experience an annual decrease in median price was Taranaki,
with a marginal fall of -0.5 per cent from $392,000 in October 2018 to $390,000 in October this year. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “October was a strong month price wise, with record median prices recorded in six regions and a record equal in Canterbury. Additionally, the country saw a new national record median price of $607,500 – the first time the median house price for New Zealand has exceeded the $600,000 mark. This is the highest number of regional record prices we’ve seen for the country in 23 months. “The Gisborne region also had a very strong month with a 37.1 per cent increase in median price year-on-year to $425,000 – the strongest price rise across the country,” continues Norwell.
“October saw the Auckland region experience the highest median house price in 19 months at $868,000. This was a 0.8 per cent lift on the median price seen last October and a 2.4 per cent lift on the median price from September this year. Looking across the Auckland region, Auckland City saw the highest median price in 28 months with a 4.6 per cent annual increase to $1,001,000 - in part due to a 43.0 per cent increase in median price in the Waitemata & Gulf area. This increase was the result of a 6.8 per cent increase in the number of $1 million to $1,999,999 properties sold compared to the same time last year. “Additionally, Franklin District saw median house prices increase 8.8 per cent to $695,000 the highest median price in 4 months,” she continues.

overnment has announced a raft of changes to the Residential Tenancies Act. Associate Minister of Housing Kris Faafoi said he does not want to be seen to unduly punishing landlords. “These changes do more than punish landlords however. They will punish anyone living next to a tenant with antisocial behaviour,” he said. The NZ Property Investors Federation says it is the only organisation to have researched the issuing of 90-day notices. Only 3 per cent of tenants receive a 90-day notice each year. Nearly half of these notices are for antisocial behaviour affecting neighbours. That is approximately 7000 tenants causing problems for up to 70,000 households around New Zealand. As a result of the announced changes, Government has tried to provide a tool for landlords to manage tenants with antisocial behaviour. However it requires neighbours to put themselves at risk of retaliation from their antisocial neighbours, says Andrew King, executive officer of the NZ Property Investors’ Federation. Currently, the landlords of any of these 7000 badly-behaving tenants

can end these tenancies without involving the neighbours or the Tenancy Tribunal, by issuing a no-cause 90 day notice. “If these changes go through, neighbours will have to provide three notices to the landlord before the landlord can apply to the Tenancy Tribunal for permission to end the tenancy,” says King. “The neighbours will need to put themselves at risk by providing the landlord with proof of the antisocial behaviour. If neighbours don’t want to do this, landlords cannot move their tenants on and it is the affected neighbours who will have to move. “If these changes go through, landlords can no longer ensure New Zealanders have safe places to live.” The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has broadly welcomed the proposed changes. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “For many years REINZ has strongly discouraged the practice of rental bidding by landlords and property managers, therefore, we welcome the proposed ban on rental bidding as this just drives up prices in an unfair and unethical manner for tenants.”

Zheng pursues his golf dream in the USA T
he talent and hard work of golfer Jimmy Zheng has been recognised with the award of an academic and sporting scholarship to Duke University, one of the powerhouses of American Collegiate sport. Zheng (Hillary House), who plays off an impressive handicap of +2.6, captained the Macleans Premier Golf Team during their victory in the 2018 NZ Secondary Schools Championship and retention of the title this year. The team is also the Auckland 18 and 9-hole champions. He was named Macleans College Sportsman of the Year for 2019 at the recent senior prizegiving. This has been a very successful year for Zheng as he gained third place in the NZ Secondary School Championship and a number of high placings in tournaments in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. These include second places in both the IMG Academy Junior World Championship International in California and in the American Junior Golf Associa-

Euthanasia cop out
Parliament has dropped the ball on euthanasia, by deciding that if the bill passes its final reading (it did) it will be put to a referendum. The issue is far too complex for the average citizen to discern. We have seen the chaos arising from a Brexit referendum where a 52 per cent/48 per cent vote for, was too close for consensus. Will a majority of 1 vote carry this bill? Why do we need parliament if they cannot make such decisions after insightful debate?
Who in their wisdom decides on what is best for our roads? It seems to me that the people in charge of decision-making don’t actually use roads as clearly demonstrated by the complete waste of taxpayers’ money at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Gossamer Road. With their consultants and driving experience, they have decided it would be best to condense the traffic into two lanes now (instead of single file) to turn from a major road (Ti Rakau) into a residential road (Gossamer). This will now condense right on the intersection and cause more of an issue than before. As a user of this intersection, it actually used to work quite well. With the phasing of the lights you used to make it through in a decent amount of time. I believe, and I am sure others do too, money could have been better spent anywhere else in town and we would all be happier if these types of things were done properly, not just trying to address one area and pushing the problem to another street. After reading the booklet sent to voters for the current council elections, I am not impressed with the presentations that many of the candidates have written. It is not helpful for a voter to make sense of exactly what contribution a candidate can make to receive a relatively large sum of public money. Their personal details include items (like) what they would like to see such as lower rates or, in the case of current members, useless trivia. It would have been helpful to voters if current members, the two councillors and the local board had contributed articles to the local newspapers if only to show that they were earning their large sums of public money. One of the Howick councillors, and at least two members of the local board, have been serving for multiple terms. It would have been helpful if they had stepped down after and encouraged young people to stand for Howick. There should be a limit of two terms when standing for council and the local board. Multiple terms only provide a candidate with a secure and regular income of pocket money. Auckland Council has a huge debt. Not on candidate has mentioned this debt and attempted to offer what should be done to check this amount or censure the mayor for the lack of discussions. Annual salaries for elected members: Councillors $111,000; Local Board $48,000. D Spencer, Highland Park

building towards their future,” he said. Athletes will undergo a series of movement competency screenings to assess their readiness for performance. The group will be observed on their performance under pressure with a highly competitive short tournament structure to be employed during the camp. “This is a ‘best on best’ environment where our Emerging Talent Selectors will be able to continue profiling our future pathway athletes,” Hansen said. Selection into the camp was based on identification, observation and tracking from the selectors through various national and regional age-group tournaments, along with feedback from Zone Performance staff. The National Development Camp invitation list of 50 includes eight local reps from the Northern Zone: They are Dajian Brown, Soana Manuofetoa, Breeze Peeni Rata and Amelia Walmsley from Howick College as well as Olivia Ropati, Jasleen Singh, Carys Stythe and Cecile Velghe from Saint Kentigern College.

Netball New Zealand’s Emerging Talent selectors will be out in force at next year’s National Development Camp as they continue to profile the country’s next generation of netballers. Fifty athletes from all five netball zones – including eight from local schools - have been invited to attend a development camp in Auckland from January 16-19, where they will gain guidance from five former Silver Ferns. The group of athletes will be split into five teams to be coached by Pathway to Podium coaches Irene van Dyk, Jo Morrison, Temepara Bailey, Sandra Edge and Anna Galvan. The head coaches will be joined by five apprentice coaches in the Performance Coach Qualification pathway while umpires and umpire coaches have also been invited to attend the four-day camp. Netball New Zealand head of high performance Keir Hansen said the National Development Camp would give the athletes an insight into the Netball New Zealand pathway. “For many, this is their first step into that elite environment and an opportunity for us to inspire our developing players

The Representation Commission is proposing changes to half of New Zealand’s electorates and establishing a new electorate in south Auckland called Flat Bush. Flat Bush is created by drawing population from the existing electorates of Hunua, anurewa and Papakura and includes Wattle Downs and Takanini. Population from Waikato is added to Hunua which is renamed Port Waikato. Adjustments are also made to the boundaries of Waikato with Coromandel, Hamilton West and Taupo. The Representation Commission released its report yesterday on the proposed boundaries and names of electorates for the next two general elections. The public will now be able to have their say before the boundaries are finalised in April 2020. “Where possible the current boundaries have been retained to minimise the number of people affected by electorate boundary and name changes,” says Representation Commission chair Judge Craig Thompson. Of the 71 existing electorates, 36 are
unchanged. The adjustments in other electorates reflect changes in population since 2014 when the boundaries were last reviewed. The biggest areas of change are in the Auckland region, Christchurch, and Otago and Southland. “In the Auckland region, the total number of general electorates increases from 24 to 25. The new electorate we’ve proposed is called Flat Bush,” says Judge Thompson. More detail on all the proposed changes is available online at vote.nz and in the Proposed Electorates 2019 report available at libraries, council offices, Electoral Commission offices and Te Puni Kokiri regional offices. “We encourage people to have a closer look at the changes and what it means for them. The public can make objections on the proposed boundaries and names until 20 December,” says Judge Thompson. “There will be a counter-objections period from 10 to 24 January, and public hearings will be held in February.”
