efugees are vulnerable. Unlike immigrants they are “forcibly displaced” to another country, says Millard Rashidi, a Year 13 student at Ormiston Senior College.

Millard arrived from Afghanistan under refugee status three years ago.

As part of Lion’s Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, where students demonstrate a sharp sense of enterprise, Millard formed a company called Atawhai (meaning kindness in Maori). He and five other students highlighted the struggles of a refugee in a children’s book.

The multicultural group is keen to make a difference by publishing an illustrated book titled Ali’s First Day at School.

The team sold 60 copies in the first two days of publication and claimed second place at the Dragons’ Den which is a competition within the Young Enterprise Scheme programme that marks students on the quality of their business pitches.

They were funded $4000 from the Ministry of Youth Development. Now Millard has been invited to a UN conference in

Millard says that unlike Ali, he didn’t have people help him.

And at the launch of the book when he asked other primary school students to define a refugee, a young student said, “they are uninvited guests to our country”.

“She may have heard it from a grown-up at home and it would be sad if she grew up with that mentality,” he says, “Which is why we worked on a book that is not about aliens but real life experiences.”

Hujat Mirzayi, also an Afghani, admits he was extremely confused when he first joined the college.

“Our accent is very different and all I said was `Yes’ because that was the only word I knew,” he says.

“I couldn’t find my way around college and it was only when our learning advisor introduced me to two other Afghani boys that I was relieved that someone would understand me.”

Krishan Reddy, marketing director of the project, says the plan is to work on an animated version with subtitles in different languages.

“Refugees face similar experiences in different parts of the world and we hope to sell this book overseas,” he says.

he appetising food served over the years by Sopheara Cambodian restaurant in Flat Bush must have made a lip-smacking impact for its loyal customers to turn up in large numbers on their last day of business.

Both Sopheara and her chef husband Ra, the hardworking couple behind the Cambodian restaurant on Chapel Rd, were overwhelmed with the support they got on the eve of shutting shop. Local resident and artist Sher Bramwell invited a table of 20 to honour Sopheara and Ra. “They are so gracious and the food has been consistently good over the years. We are really going to miss them,” she said.

Mike Turinsky, who is close to the family and has mentored their son Prince at Botany Downs Secondary College, said, “It’s rare to find people who do the hard yards and do it without complaining. It’s both inspiring and humbling.”

Unbeknown to them, Sher had arranged a bouquet of flowers and a card signed by their customers. Even Lee who waits

tables was called centre stage and acknowledged for her excellent customer service and her cheeky-monkey smile.

And while everyone present wanted to know about Sopheara and Ra’s next foodie project, the couple said they would take a break after years of working long hours and then decide where or what they want to pursue.

Man arrested outside mosque were shots fired during this arrest”.

“Any other reporting of the sort is scaremongering and adds unnecessary alarm to members of our community,” she said.

The arrest was not related to the mosque.

Police, with the assistance of the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS), arrested a 40-year-old man.

The man had a warrant for

his arrest for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm relating to an incident in New Lynn from July 25. AOS were called in as a precautionary measure.

“We understand that this incident may have caused alarm but this matter has been resolved and is in no way connected to the mosque.”

The man arrested was expected to appear in the Waitakere District Court.

The police arrest of a wanted man outside a Pakuranga mosque last Friday initially caused alarm about a possible shooter.

Media initially reported shots had been fired outside Masjid Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq just before 2pm at the Cortina Place mosque.

From balletic bodies to gluten free waffles B

udding young scientists are set to show off their projects at the South and East Auckland Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair this week at Mission Heights Junior College.

Among the entries are ‘Balletic Bodies’, ‘What’s with all the Gluten-Free Waffles?’ and ‘Freedom from Nagging’.

More than 170 students from 15 schools have entered this year’s annual National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) South and East Auckland STEM Fair.

Tracey Burton, a Freshwater Ecologist and science fair coordinator at NIWA, says the fairs are an important platform for students to think about and engage with science.

“For many young students, science fairs are the first time

they will design and carry out their own scientific investigation. We hope the experience will inspire them to pursue careers in science and technology”.

Students are competing for more than $11,000 in prizes including special awards, best overall project by year level and the premier best in the fair award.

As well as cash awards, students are also competing for an experience-based learning trip with Auckland Transport and the opportunity to display projects at MOTAT in a Science Fair Showcase exhibit.

On Friday morning, a team of judges will interview students and the winners will be announced at a prizegiving to be held at Elim Christian Centre Auditorium on Tuesday, August

27 at 7pm.

Local election candidates named T

he preliminary list of Auckland local election candidates has been released.

There are 21 mayoral candidates, 54 people vying for councillor roles, and 348 people contesting local board positions.

Standing for the Howick seat on Auckland Council are incumbents Sharon Stewart (Independent) and Paul Young (Independent) as well as current Howick Local Board chair David Collings (Collings for Council), Botany’s Damian Light (Independent) and Howick’s Tofik Mamedov (East Vision).

There are also 83 candidates for the three Auckland DHBs (compared to 72 in 2016) and 61 candidates for the five licensing trusts (compared to 63 in 2016).

Auckland Council consists of a mayor, 20 councillors and 149 local board members.

A total of 468 candidates stood for council in 2016.

Winning team at International Aerobics Championship Howick locals Abbey Bolton, Neela Patel and Madi Taylor couldn’t believe their ears when their team clinched second place out of 17 countries participating at the 30th Annual International Aerobics Championship in the US. The ecstatic 14-year-olds were part of a team of five. Participating at an international level in the US – hosted by the Association of National Aerobics Championship (ANAC) in Phoenix

Arizona – was a first for all of them. And to make podium was a huge achievement.

The girls competed in individual routines and achieved fantastic results in a category featuring more than 60 athletes, with three of the local contestants placing in the top half of the competition.

The team of five had trained hard with a mix of conditioning, tumbling and aerobics sessions and often trained through weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Balancing public transport and motorists L

ast week I launched a petition calling on Auckland Transport (AT) to remove the T2/Bus lane on Pakuranga Road and restore its use to everyday motorists.

Many of you have been in touch since to share your views and it seems the vast majority of you agree with this stance.

I launched the petition in large part because members of the community were complaining about the lane and now the goal is to encourage as many people as we can to sign.

I want to be clear that my issue is not with finding ways to improve the patronage on public transport; I fully support this goal.

My concern all along has been with a poorly thought through solution, that in its current form will make no positive

difference.

This is a concern that I, along with hundreds of local residents, tried to share with AT at a public meeting earlier this year.

Most of those who attended did not oppose the idea of improving public transport but knew from experience that the proposed T2/Bus lane would not achieve this aim.

Dedicated busways are only effective when they are built alongside existing roads, instead of replacing them.

The fact is that over 90 per cent of people in Pakuranga travelling to work do so by private vehicle, and while I support the goal of reducing that number, it is not going to happen without real and efficient solutions.

ject. I’m disappointed that Lagoon Drive will lose a lane, but overall the project will help buses run efficiently and, thus, encourage more people to use them.

The Reeves Road Flyover is another important piece to this puzzle, however it has recently become apparent that Auckland Transport will be delaying this project from a completion date of 2022, to one now of 2025.

I am strongly of the view that the key to unlocking the congestion issues around Pakuranga is not one or the

other when it comes to roads or public transport, but a careful balance between the two.

It’s precisely why the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover are so important, with the Flyover complementing the Busway by allowing it to run smoothly underneath without competing traffic flows.

The current council and government are far too focused on just the one transport solution, public transport and don’t seem to care about the majority of people who use their own vehicles. We all know transport is not an easily solved problem but if we’re ever going to come close, we need to consider all modes of transport together.

Food D ratings

New natives for maunga

Two East Auckland eateries have received D food grade ratings from Auckland Council. Noodle Canteen Pakuranga and My Kitchen in Somerville were slapped with the ratings in the July-August inspection period.

When visited by Times, a My Kitchen employee put the rating down to “paperwork” and stated it would be changed soon. However the D rating remained in place as of August 15.

More than 74,000 new native trees and shrubs will be planted on the Tupuna Maunga (volcanic cones) of Tamaki Makaurau / Auckland by 2021.

More than 19,000 of these have already been planted over the last 12 months.

Native trees and shrubs planned by 2021 include 33,300 for Ohuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain.

hen life gets blurry, adjust your focus. For those ‘easties’ who have always wanted to try their hand at photography, or those amateur shutterbugs who already have armed themselves with an SLR, the Howick Photographic Society (HPS) is a great place to meet other photophiles and immerse yourself into a creative hub.

The incorporated society boasts 75 paid up members and has been snapping pictures of the local environment and capturing the zeitgeist of east Auckland for the past 63 years.

Its core role is to teach the art of photography, educating its members on the pros and cons of image creation, post-processing techniques and everything in between.

Recently, club members entered the Bowron Landscape Projected Digital

Images Competition. This is a competition for sets of four landscape digitally projected images, one image per club member, to be submitted by member clubs of the Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ).

A club spokesperson stated, “We asked for submissions of high quality images from all of our members and, while we received some lovely images, we were rather limited in our selection as we know from previous times that the judges like diversity.”

The hard work paid off, with the

society being awarded prestigious Trenna Packer Salver award for 2019.

So far, the Salver has only been won twice by North Island Camera Clubs; Pukekohe-Franklin in 2018 and now Howick in 2019.

The judges also chose some images to receive individual Honours. The HPS set had one image that received an honours award; Torben Neilsen for his superb image of a Bell Frog.

The HPS meets every Monday, with the third meeting including a field trip to places like the Hunua Ranges to capture natural landscapes, Lloyd Elsmore Park for sport, and Tamaki Estuary for kingfishers and migratory birds.

Another crash on Aviemore Drive

A

second serious accident in just over a week happened again on Aviemore Drive.

On Monday night a vehicle travelling north on Aviemore Drive struck a parked car and flipped on to its side.

The driver was uninjured, but was in some distress. He had apparently not been drinking, but witnesses suggested he had been inattentive.

A witness to the crash, Liz Li, was waiting to turn left out of a nearby business when she saw a Volvo clip a parked car and flip on its side. The young male driver was going “not too fast” but was “not focused on the road”.

Monday’s crash is the second in a little over a week.

Li left the incident soon after giving her details, as she had a baby in the car.

Fiona He, who owns a business opposite the accident scene, went outside when she heard an employee’s car had been damaged by the colliding vehicle. He praised members of the public for comforting the driver. “It’s so nice to see people

The last accident was a fatality on August 9. Police have confirmed 37-year-old Mark John Siviter died at the scene on Aviemore Drive and another person was admitted to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries.

Many people take in boarders either for company or to help pay the bills. But is it a rental or flatting or boarding situation?

A flatmate is someone who shares a house with others, contributing to expenses and chores; at least one flatmate is also tenant i.e. their name is on the tenancy agreement.

A tenant is a person who rents a property from a landlord, and has a written tenancy agreement signed by both the landlord and the tenant. Tenants have rights and obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986.

A boarder is someone who rents a room in a private home. [There are different requirements for boarding houses of six or more boarders]. Having a boarder in your home is similar to having a flatmate.

You should look at your family situation and work and social life, and think about what you would need to provide for the boarder.

For example, your boarder would probably be sharing your kitchen, bathroom and living room. The security of your possessions is important to consider. Ask yourself things like; whether you want the boarder to be male or female, a student, a child or adult; how long would you expect the boarder to stay for; whether you will provide meals; whether you will offer room-cleaning and bed-making; whether you will do washing and ironing, etc. You will need to decide whether the rent will include telephone, power and food, or whether you will require the boarder to pay for these separately.

A Boarding Agreement identifying the particular details from these considerations is recommended for the benefit of both you and your boarder, because it will

When Saint Kentigern College year 13 student and aspiring actor Sam Ashton stumbled online across a young artist programme in Geneva, Switzerland, run by the prestigious Juilliard School, he set his sights on gaining a place.

The Juilliard School is a world leader in performing arts education. Their mission is to provide the highest calibre of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.’

What followed was an exhaustive process of submissions detailing Sam’s abilities as a thespian. Audition tapes included a monologue, a song, and an extensive self-introduction.

Beginning in the heat of a European summer in early July, each day began with a three-and-a-half-hour class in the morning which touched on different aspects of drama such as improvisation, stage-fighting and team-building exercises.

The afternoon was devoted to preparing monologues, and in-depth script analysis which was a new experience for Sam, as he says “I had never done that kind of scrutiny of a text to that extent before and it is something that I will regularly put into my acting work from now on.”

At times the experience seemed surreal.

“Here I am, in Switzerland, being taught by teachers from Juilliard itself and professional actors alike. I am the luckiest person in the world!”

MP calls for banning of shellfish gathering A

popular east Auckland beach should be closed to shellfish gathering so its cockle population can recover from over-harvesting.

That’s the view of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who says the step needs to be taken at Cockle Bay Beach to stop cockles from being wiped out.

Ross is working with a group of Cockle Bay residents on the issue and recently directed written and oral questions on it to Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash in Parliament.

“At least three New Zealand beaches are currently closed entirely that have a larger cockle population than Cockle Bay Beach does,” said Ross.

“A 50-cockle seasonal limit is in place at the beach but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that limit is being ignored by many people.

“Cockle Bay Beach has one of the lowest numbers of cockles of all the beaches that have shellfish restrictions in place.”

Local residents publicly expressed concern earlier this year that the beach may one day run out of cockles.

The seasonal limit of 50 cockles per person per day is in place at the beach between May 1 and September 30, but there’s

no limit to how many people can harvest cockles there each day.

Ross asked Nash in Parliament why Cockle Bay Beach is only subject to a seasonal ban when three other beaches with higher cockle densities are closed. He also asked whether Nash was confident the seasonal ban is sufficient to protect its cockle fishery.

Nash said that unlike the other beaches, the cockle population at Cockle Bay Beach does

not show a downward trend.

“However, if the scientific evidence does begin to show such a downward trend, then we will take the appropriate sustainability measures,” he said.

In a written answer to one of Mr Ross’s questions, Nash said scientific surveys found the number of cockles at Cockle Bay Beach fell between 2011 and 2016, but then rose in 2018.

Ross says he questions the reliability of that survey, given the cockle population had been

steadily declining prior to last year.

After he raised the issue in Parliament, Nash offered to arrange a briefing for him and the group of Cockle Bay residents with officials from the Ministry of Fisheries.

That briefing will take place in east Auckland at the end of this month.

Ross says he will keep pressure on the Government to ensure Cockle Bay Beach’s cockle population is protected.

Kid Justice vandalised a second time ■■By Jim Birchall A controversial sculpture erected to mark the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage has been vandalised for the second time in three months, with a pillager making off with an arm from the artwork. The sculpture named ‘Kid Justice’ by artist Erin Forsyth, had a foot damaged in March and was subjected to three weeks repair work.

Kid Justice rests on a plinth which has been designed to be a permanent foundation on which to install a changing collection of art that responds to both contemporary and historical themes.

The artwork was met with derision from some quarters upon unveiling in December 2018, but is expected to remain at the site until at least 2022.

When approached for comment, Auckland Council art collection manager Peter Tilley said “We are aware that Kid Justice has been damaged and are investigating the cause of the damage. In the meantime, we are working with our maintenance team to repair the artwork as soon as possible.”

The sculpture has been removed from the reserve as of August 20.

Howick Brass are in the process of forming an academy band and various brass ensembles. The Howick Brass teachers have experience from professional orchestras.

As well as ensemble activities, including performing together with the students, they also participate in research and development projects at the academy. We offer free lessons and can arrange instrument hire for new players without access to instruments.

The main instruments are cornet/trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, baritone and tuba, although students may also choose to specialise in certain period instruments. The academy has a senior band that has won the NZ C grade title on three occasions finishing 1st in 2018 and second at the 2019 national contest.

Alternative teaching models and methods are trialled alongside traditional tuition. Workshops and projects challenge both students and teachers to succeed in an ever changing music industry.

Lessons are Wednesday night 6pm to 7pm at the Howick Band Room, Howick Domain, 90R Wellington Street, Howick.

ive player changes and a much better attitude reaped its reward when the All Blacks avenged their 47-26 Perth rugby defeat with a 36-0 whitewash of the Wallabies at Eden Park last Saturday night.

In doing so they maintained their grip on the prized Bledisloe Cup which head coach Steve Hansen rates second only to the Webb Ellis Cup, the prize for winning the World Cup. Whether they can retain that trophy in Tokyo remains a moot point given the improvement made by South Africa, Wales, England, Ireland and Australia. But it was easily their best performance of a jitterey Rugby Championship and a much needed confidence boost.

Lock Patrick Tuipulotu and prop Nepo Laulala added grunt to the forward pack. highlighted by a seven-man scrum twice shunting the Wallabies backwards when Dane Coles was sinbinned for a stupid offence. It was easily the powerful Tuipulotu’s best game of the season, having disappointed earlier in the Rugby Championship won by the much improved Springboks.

Having been promoted at the expense of Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith, workaholic wings George Bridge and Sevu Reece booked their tickets to Tokyo with outstanding performances, Bridge setting up two

tries with sharp breaks and scoring one himself.

Reece is a speedy crackerjack who punches way above his weight and could star at the World Cup in much the same way Nehe Milner-Skudder did in 2015.

With Sonny Bill Williams running hard and straight and combining nicely in the centres with the excellent Anton Lienert-Brown, the backline prospered from the improved platform set by the forwards and the slick services of Aaron Smith and Richie Mo’unga.

Thankfully, selectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox have ignored calls from some critics to return Beauden Barrett to first-five after Mo’unga failed to deliver in the Perth test his brilliant Super Rugby form for the Crusaders.

What the naysayers failed to take into account was that in that test, Barrett was first receiver 23 times from fullback, the same as Mo’unga, behind an outclassed pack that failed to deliver quality ball.

Barrett has consistently performed well at fullback and remains most dangerous when he strikes out wide where he has more space to utilise his speed. He is an exceptional talent but so is Mo’unga who has been a major contributor to the Crusaders three consecutive Super Rugby titles.

Agnew’s Angle sustained last Saturday will heal quickly, as does that suffered by champion lock Brodie Retallick in the 16-all draw against new Rugby Championship winners South Africa.

In retaining the Bledisloe Cup in his 100th test as head coach, the laconic Hansen will have been delighted with the leadership shown by No 8 and captain Kieran Read whose form made a mockery of those critics who claimed he was a spent force.

Along with lock Sam Whitelock and fellow loosies Sam Cane and Ardie Savea, Read’s defence was superb. He doesn’t make the breaks he once did but still contributes to lineouts and kick-offs and still has a good draw and pass.

The fearless Cane’s return after a broken neck has been remarkable and what the team loses in the lineout with Savea’s promotion to No 6, it gains in sharpening the attack.

He and Coles are the team’s best attacking forwards although the latter needs to control his temper to ensure the All Blacks keep 15 men on the park. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer

RUGBY UNION

St Kents into final Saint Kentigern College’s 1st XV is through to the Auckland 1A final following a great win over old rivals Sacred Heart on Saturday, winning 29-15 in front of a huge crowd.

St Kents lead from start to finish and showed some clinical rugby with two tries to captain Cameron Church and some accurate kicking from Jona Mataiciwa securing the win.

St Kents will take on Kings College in the final at Eden Park on Saturday at 3pm.
