to another world.” He bemoans the fact that New Year which was once a very solemn and special occasion where women spent days in the kitchen cooking up a feast, has all changed. “It was the only time we wore new clothes, ate good food, prayed to our ancestors and enjoyed the fireworks. It was so special to spend time with extended family. Now people go to fancy restaurants on New Year so there is nothing special about rituals and tradition. It’s lost its significance – not only amongst the Chinese in New Zealand but also for the younger generation in China. “I’ve stubbornly held on to my culture because it is my identity, it represents my roots.” It’s the reason the history buff has set up a small museum called Mau Qiang at

t this time of the year, educator and community worker Rosa Chow gets busy making around 250 auspicious red packets for the staff at Macleans College. On the board of trustees, Rosa initiated the idea of getting Asian parents to make and present teachers/staff of Macleans College with little red packets that bring good luck and prosperity during Chinese New Year. In Chinese culture, the tradition of gifting little red envelopes with money in it is a welcome ritual during Chinese New Year, weddings and family celebrations. Traditionally it is gifted by elders in the family to the young ones. “Instead of the customary money we pack just a chocolate coin for the staff in the red envelopes that are considered lucky,” says Rosa, who was born in Hong Kong and has lived in New Zealand for more than 23 years.

“The Chinese love money so everything to do with New Year is connected to good fortune, prosperity and wealth,” she laughs. The envelopes are usually red or gold with a Chinese character that represents good luck. Local resident Yongjie Li, a Chinophile says that at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve on January 24, his young family will be partaking in a meal of dumplings that are shaped like gold ingots, symbolising wealth. “There will be other traditional food too...we make around a hundred dumplings with sticky rice pastry, sugar and hide a coin in some of the dumplings. The person who finds a coin is said to be lucky. Also, sugar represents sweetness – sweet tidings and reminds one to speak well of others.” A specialist advisor, (community empowerment-arts, community and events) with Auckland Council, Yongjie who is a collector of vintage Chinese opera artefacts, music, costumes and antique ornaments, says the family will worship the God of Wealth and Good Fortune Gong Ming Zhou –a mythological figure worshipped in the Chinese folk religion and Taoism on New Year’s Eve. “We also pray to our ancestors, including those from different dynasties,” he says. Yongjie is a Chinese opera amateur and has performed opera for the last 30 years. He says that it was the grandeur of elaborately embroidered silken robes of the opera singers that dazzled him as a five-year-old. “I lived in the countryside in north east China and in those days we got to wear new clothes only during New Year. The rest of the year we wore old clothes with patches on it. For me, the costumes represented wealth, aristocracy and the vivid historic stories they enacted on stage were captivating, transporting me

Bill to prioritise vehicles responding to electrical emergencies A Members Bill to allow lines companies to use flashing lights which require traffic to give them priority when responding to Electrical Emergencies has been lodged by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. Brown says that congestion in Auckland and across New Zealand is making it more difficult for lines companies to respond to electrical emergencies where someone’s life is in danger in a timely manner. “In an incident where the power lines have been brought down by a car crash, Fire and Ambulance responders can arrive quickly using their lights and sirens, but often cannot assist until the lines company turn up and turn the power off. Frequently, the line company is stuck on the motorway or in traffic caused by the accident such as where power has been cut to traffic lights, he points out. “In Auckland a car accident involving a power pole will take place every day on average. There are also cases of people dependent on electricity for medical machines which keep them alive. The sooner these vehicles can turn up to get the power back on – the better the outcome,” he says. This Bill will give vehicles responding to Electrical Emergencies the ability to display a flashing light and which requires other vehicles to give way to them in a similar way to doctors, midwives, and some nurses. Lines company Vector has welcomed the Bill. Amending New Zealand’s Land Transport Rules to help lines mechanics respond faster to electrical emergencies
More million dollar state homes ■■BY NICK KRAUSE
A
lmost $30 million of state houses were built in the Howick Local Board area in 2018/2019. Figures obtained by the Times from Kainga Ora – formerly Housing NZ – under the Official Information Act (OIA) show 38 units were built in 2018/2019 in the local board area which includes Pakuranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tamaki. In total these cost $29.49m. Kainga Ora said the spreadsheet “shows the new state houses in the …Howick Local Board area with the associated costs. Note this excludes buyins – houses that have been lived in previously.” The Crown agency would not reveal the addresses. “Details of the property addresses have been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA to protect the privacy of our tenants,” Kainga Ora said. The Times did ask the agency for figures in the Pohutukawa Coast area too and was provided with broader Franklin Local Board statistics entitled Pukekohe which the Times is excluding due to potential confusion. Kainga Ora does state

could save lives, says Vector’s head of field services Marko Simunac. “There have been times in the past where a car has struck a power pole and live power lines have fallen on the car with injured occupants still inside,” says Simunac. “In such circumstances, first responders already at the scene must wait for a lines mechanic to arrive and ensure the scene is safe to enter, which can cause delays to the rescue effort. “If our lines mechanics have flashing lights on their response vehicles, they will be able to move through traffic more quickly and better support emergency services in situations where electrical equipment is implicated. “Furthermore, the use of flashing lights will allow lines companies to improve response times in situations where a power outage is affecting people who are medically dependent on electricity.”
though: “There are 1005 state house units in the Franklin and Howick Local Board areas with a combined book value of $579.5 million.” Meanwhile Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown said the purchase of million-dollar state houses last year is public money badly spent. Confirmation from the Minister for Housing that her department bought five properties in Howick last year for nearly $1m each should anger hard-working taxpayers, he said. “The Government bought five properties in Nelson Street last year at a cost of almost $1m each. Why the Government is spending up large on premium homes for their state housing portfolio is beyond me, and Kiwis shouldn’t have their hard-earned tax dollars spent so carelessly.” Brown acknowledged that everyone needed a roof over their heads and that many would like to live in million-dollar homes, but he believed the Government should be spending the money more effectively. “This money could have been used to buy more houses at a cheaper price elsewhere or used to develop Housing New Zealand land into many more

properties for those in need,” said Brown. “The Pakuranga electorate is home to countless New Zealanders who have worked incredibly hard to save enough money to buy homes in these suburbs. “There are hundreds of thousands of Kiwis working hard to scrape together enough money to buy their own home, with budgets much lower than these million dollar homes.” He said just like families saving for their first home, the Government should be prudent with its resources to get the best bang for the taxpayers buck. “This once again shows that this Government has no plan on Housing. The Government came to office with a plan to build 100,000 houses over 10 years and has failed to deliver on this promise and is instead resorting to buying up houses on the open market,” Brown said. “New Zealand needs real solutions to fix our housing problems, such as fixing the Resource Management Act and supporting first home buyers, ssues which National will not be afraid to tackle if we win Government later this year.”

Huge effort to get rid of rats, possums and weasels, ferrets I
t’s a mammoth project that needs huge effort but looks like many service organisations and groups, including schools, have joined hands with the Local Board to help make Howick pest free. Pest Free Howick Ward is a Local Board-funded project that aims to free the entire Howick Ward (Pakuranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tamaki) from pests. Rotary Service Clubs, Lions and the Friends of Mangemangeroa have pitched in to achieve this goal. Bucklands Beach Peninsula’s unique positioning is similar to an island with water boundaries on three sides which makes it easier to create a predator trap boundary to stop pests getting through. Pest Free Howick Ward has been working closely with local communities to provide free rat traps and trapping advice to enthusiastic residents. A number of residents have already taken advantage of this offer and are actively involved in backyard trapping. To be even more effective, approximately one in every five

DEVELOPMENT
Metlifecare receives consent for golf course village E
arthworks are underway for ‘Fairway Gardens’, Metlifecare’s newest retirement village development in Botany Downs. The resource consent covers all stages of the $180 million development, with the first 48 premium apartments expected to be completed mid-2021. Metlifecare CEO Glen Sowry says he is excited by the opportunity to build New Zealand’s first retirement village to be located on a golf course. “It’s a great milestone to break ground on what we believe will be a village unlike any other with unobstructed access to an outstanding golf course and real community integration that promotes wellness and social interaction,” he said. The site on Pakuranga Golf Course on the corner of Botany and Cascades Roads will deliver more than 200 independent and
serviced apartments and 40 care beds on completion with no hard boundaries separating the village green from the 18-hole golf course. Careful design and planning ensures sweeping views over the greens and down the fairways, he said. The announcement of the name, Fairway Gardens, follows a well-attended community information event held at the golf course in mid-2019. Metlifecare shared the masterplan and architectural concept design followed by a feedback session on name, design and layout. “The name reflects the village’s seamless integration with the golf course and the expansive views across the green,” Sowry said. “It was fantastic to involve the community in the process, which showed a clear desire for the unique location and facilities to inform its identity.
“The village holds clear appeal for golf lovers – many of Pakuranga Golf Club’s members have already registered interest. The design includes amenities including outdoor covered lounge, bar and café, wellbeing space, beauty salon, swimming pool, gym, spa, in a sought-after location. Fairway Gardens will be Metlifecare’s fifth village in the east Auckland region, sitting alongside Dannemora Gardens, Highlands, Edgewater Village and Longford Park. “Significant investment is being made in the area, with a comprehensive revitalisation project underway to deliver 45 new apartments and a homestead model care home at Edgewater, while a second new retirement village, Pohutukawa Landing, is under construction in the heart of Beachlands with the first villas due in 2021,” said Sowry.

CRIME
Alleged car thief nabbed Counties Manukau Police on night shift staff caught an offender who was breaking into a car in Howick on Monday. “Our officers who were on a patrol when they saw a man in the process of breaking into a car,” a spokesperson said. “They swiftly arrested the man and took him into cus-
tody. The man allegedly had a number of instruments and tools on him used to break into vehicles.” A 26-year-old faces multiple charges including attempted unlawful taking, theft ex-car and possession of instruments for conversion and was due to appear in the Manukau District Court this week.
The Good Home in Howick has given out thousands of dollars again to local schools. Good Home Proprietor Barry O’Shaughnessy has been running his Dollars for Schools competition since 2012 “with a couple of years break in the middle”. “It is very simple - I award points to each school whenever someone from a particular school dines at the Good Home between July and November,” he said. “The one with the most points gets $3000 cash.” To date he has donated at least $27,000. This year’s promotion saw him give away $4500 cash at the end of the year with 12 schools participating. The three winners were Howick Primary $500; Mellons Bay Primary $1000 and as Shelly Park School which received $3000.

ANNIVERSARY
Historical Village celebrates 40th The Howick Historical Village is turning 40. The Howick and Districts Historical Society will celebrate four decades since the opening of the Howick Historical Village in 1980 with a series of themed events and activities. Society president Marin Burgess says an afternoon tea for all members, supporters and volunteers who have helped out so generously over the past forty years is planned along with a massive ‘Live Day’ on March 15 to which the public are invited. A photo montage of how the village buildings looked before, and as they arrived – as well as how many arrived in the dead of night escorted by keen volunteers to ensure no damage occurred - will be on show in the cottages. There
are now more than 35 buildings in the village which remains true to the original plans drawn up by the society with assistance from Manukau City’s Mayor of the time, Sir Lloyd Elsmore. The heritage gardens showcase plants and vegetables of the era and care has been taken with vistas to ensure no modern features intrude. “Many thousands of people, both local and tourists, have visited over the 40 years with a common theme being, ‘I came here as a pupil on a school visit,’” says Burgess. “We’d encourage all those now grown school visitors to return on March 15 to see how the village has grown. The education programme started in 1981 remains our most successful activity and hosts more
than 80 schools annually. Burgess says the Howick Historical Village is now recognised as a respected living history museum in the tourism and education arenas of Auckland City. “This success is clearly a result of much hard work, support and encouragement from many people. We’ve had bureaucratic battles, adjusted visions, moved buildings, fought for funds, and still present as an authentic environment showing not only the unique Fencible story but a much wider history of Auckland’s early development in an outstanding and appealing manner.” ➤➤Entrance fees: $16 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for children over 5. ➤➤Open 7 days a week, 10am to last entrance at 4pm.

appy New Year – I trust that you had a wonderful break and came back refreshed for 2020 and were able to enjoy some precious time with your family and friends. 2020 is shaping up to be a busy and exciting year. Not only is it an election year, but there are a number of significant issues which need addressing in Pakuranga and which I am looking forward to advocating for on your behalf. Transport will remain at the top of my list. Just this week I met with Mayor Phil Goff to discuss the AMETI/Eastern Busway project which is currently under construction between Panmure in Pakuranga. The purpose of the meeting was to raise concerns about the timing of the project which east Auckland has been waiting for since 2006 when the project was first mooted - the completion date still being 2025. Last year Auckland Transport said there would be another delay in the planning for the Busway between Pakuranga and Panmure and a delay in construction of the Reeves Road Flyover. My message to the Mayor was that the community needs certainty and wants to see action. 1. There is concern over Auckland Transports ability to deliver projects to announced timeframes. 2. The delay in construction of the Reeves Road Flyover could mean additional construction impacts on traffic as this will now likely be built at the same time as the Busway

between Pakuranga and Botany. All through a busy transport corridor. 3. Landowners in Pakuranga affected by the Busway and Flyover need certainty so they can make development plans. With a delay of another 18 months for Auckland Transport to finally decide where the new busway and Reeves Road Flyover will go, this impacts on any plans these landowners may have and their ability to make final decisions. I also made it clear that the community expects better communication from Auckland Transport about this project going forward. Whilst the Mayor doesn’t have operational decision making over Auckland Transport, I hope my advocacy to him will ensure more accountability of the decisions Auckland Transport make in east Auckland and better engagement for our community in these decisions. As 2020 begins I will continue to advocate for better transport and more transport choice in Pakuranga and for certainty for the remaining stages of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover. Volunteers needed for Child Cancer Foundation Child Cancer Foundation is calling for volunteers to help with its annual Street Appeal on February 28 and 29. The appeal is the biggest annual fundraising event on Child Cancer Foundation’s fundraising calendar and depends on the support of volunteers nationwide to collect funds. Every week, three children are diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand. Child Cancer Foundation is there for Kiwi kids with cancer and the people who love them, providing practical and emotional support throughout their child’s cancer. The Foundation does not receive any government support so every donated dollar counts. Last year, approximately 600 volunteers took to the streets to collect donations. The collection raised an incredible $232,913. This year, Child Cancer Foundation is aiming to raise even more so that they can continue providing essential support when children and families need it most. Clubs, schools, community groups, businesses and organisations can also adopt-a-site in their local area for one or both days. Individual volunteer registrations can register at: childcancer.org.nz ➤➤For more information and to register, visit childcancer.org.nz or call 021 235 9968 to be connected with your local organiser.
The Anglo-South African War or Boer War of 1899 to 1902 As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.
A
group of Howick and Pakuranga young men eagerly enrolled when the Government, in September 1899, offered to assist Britain in its struggle against descendants of the Dutch colonists, the Boers in the Transvaal/South African Republic and their ally The Orange Free State. The excitement and patriotism of these men from mainly local farms who took their own horses and equipment, called “Rough Riders” only had two weeks of training, were used to handling guns and quickly trained their horses to accept gunfire. They included: 1. Trooper Vincent Hattaway, son of Captain Robert Hattaway. He was a farmer and joined the 4th Contingent. 2. Trooper Corporal John Ireland, a builder in Howick. He joined the 8th Contingent. 3. Trooper Nicholas Colin Stichbury, a baker, served in the 5th and 8th Contingents. He was later killed in World War I. 4. Trooper Corporal Carl WA Moller, dairy farmer of Fairview, Whitford Road. 5. Captain Donald Simson, Queens South African Medal
with clasps. He joined as Lieutenant in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in 8th Contingent. He is buried in the Catholic Cemetery, Picton Street, Howick. Later he became Sir Donald Simson, founder of the RSA. 6. Trooper Barendt Mattson (called Ben), farmer of Pakuranga, joined the 9th Contingent. He was killed on the minesweeper Puriri which was torpedoed in 1941 in the Hauraki Gulf. 7. Trooper Vernon Cargo of the 9th Contingent, farmer from East Tamaki. 8. Trooper John Pye of the 9th Contingent of Hyde Park farm, Pakuranga. When they left there was a farewell concert and dance in Howick. Next day there was the grand parade, official luncheon before boarding the troopship Devon which was escorted by packed ferryboats as far as the Rangitoto Channel. When Trooper Hattaway returned, he was a hero at the welcome home reception at Howick Hall greeted with the crowd singing <When Jonny Comes Marching Home, followed by cheering and a com-
munity concert. When peace was declared, the British flag was hoisted up the Howick School flagpole with cheers from students and Howick churches rang their bells. Bonfires were lit on the volcanic cones and services of thanksgiving were held. Auckland trams and buses were decorated with flags and ribbons. Peace medals were distributed to school students. Howick in Natal, South Africa, was a major convalescent camp. On May 17, 1902 Governor Lord Ranfurly visited Howick veterans and planted a tulip tree at Pakuranga School, now

site of the ambulance station. New Zealand sent 6495 men, with 8000 horses and about 50 women as nurses and teachers. In all, 58 men were killed, 27 accidentally killed, 136 died of disease and 190 were wounded. New Zealand women made clothing, knitted pullovers for our troops and organised concerts and dances to raise funds for the war effort. Ranfurly Home in Mt Roskill was a memorial to those killed and a home for aged veterans opened in 1903. No Howick men or women were killed in this war. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

From Botany, for Botany Jami-Lee Ross speaks about his 15 years of service to the local community.
“Jami-Lee works extremely hard for the local community,” Lucy says. “He genuinely wants to see Botany achieve and grow and not be forgotten as just another suburb of Auckland.” Lucy says she’s proud of how her husband got back up and redirected himself to his job. “I’ve seen him pick himself up and work as hard as he can for Botany.
“Every new person we meet presents a new opportunity,” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says as he walks up a driveway in suburban Dannemora.
“The last 18 months presented personal and health challenges for us to overcome, but we are all much stronger for it now.
The mid-January sun reflects off the cream front door before he starts knocking.
“The kindness and compassion we’ve received from local people in Botany is huge.
Mother-of-two Vanessa soon appears with her 8-year-old son Jacob, who says quickly, “It’s the man from the posters!”
“We will keep giving back to this place our family has always called home.
“Hi, my name is Jami-Lee Ross, your local Member of Parliament for Botany,” JamiLee says with a smile.
“We are both 100 per cent committed to this together.” Back at Vanessa’s front door, Jami-Lee hands her his brochure and encourages her family to contact him if they ever need help.
“I’m just knocking on doors in your neighbourhood to say hi and see if there’s anything I can help with as your local MP.” It’s that friendly introduction that will be familiar to thousands of Botany constituents.
“Keep up the good work,” she tells him. “We aren’t very happy with the way the political parties just seem to attack each other.
Grassroots local advocacy, listening to local people, and delivering wins for his local community is the part of the job that JamiLee says he loves the most. Vanessa welcomes the familiar face on her doorstep and thanks him for taking the time to visit. “We got your letter about what you’re doing to build a busway in Botany,” she tells the MP. “My husband and I are sick of being stuck in traffic trying to get to work.” Jami-Lee points to the work he’s doing on the issue, including working with Transport Minister Phil Twyford on the Botany to Auckland Airport rapid transport project. “We need better transport options for Botany,” Jami-Lee says. “We’re going to build a
“But we know you, and we will be voting for you again this year, so good luck.”
“That’s what the party vote is for. It’s that second, local vote, that people can use to choose the local person who will stand up and fight for them the most in Botany. “I’m now free to stand up for local residents and fight for local issues. “I’m stepping up and achieving results on protecting Cockle Bay Beach, on law and order issues at local parks, on speeding vehicles, and on important public transport upgrades.”
Lucy has lived and breathed every moment of Jami-Lee’s political career right alongside him.
They take a selfie for Facebook and JamiLee says goodbye. He heads back down the long driveway and on to the next house.
She’s a busy mother, wife, school board of trustees’ chairperson, and NZ Police forensics expert. But she still finds time to be on hand at school galas, local events, and celebrations held by the area’s many ethnic communities.
Being a local boy is also what Jami-Lee says drives him to carry on doing what he can for Botany.
“I’ve served here for 15 years, and the great thing is, as an independent MP I can work with both sides of the Parliament to get results for Botany.”
“These aren’t just ‘politician promises’ – we are actually working on it and progress is happening.” It’s unusual for a politician who isn’t in government to be getting wins for their local area, but as an independent MP, Jami-Lee says he has the freedom to focus on local issues, without worrying about the needs of a political party. “I’ve served here for 15 years, and the great thing is, as an independent MP I can work with both sides of the Parliament to get results for Botany. “I’m getting more done for Botany than I ever could before. High-flying candidates who parachute into politics are always high on their party list.
“We go to Cockle Bay Beach, our kids play at the Kilkenny Drive playground, we shop at Botany Town Centre, and we visit local cafes in Howick. It’s also incredibly satisfying to be able to drive around and see the many projects I’ve helped bring to fruition. “The Meadowlands Multisport Facility, the Star of the Sea heritage restoration, the planning and development of both Barry Curtis Park and Ormiston Town Centre, and the construction of the Eastern Busway. “These are all local projects I’ve been intimately involved with over the years. “This isn’t just my job, it’s what I’ve devoted almost my entire adult life to – getting results for the community that I live in and that I love.”
Authorised by J Ross, 309 Botany Road
“It’s going to connect to the Eastern Busway that’s being built now, and I’m also working on getting a multi-storey Park-and-Ride building at the Botany Town Centre.
He and his wife Lucy grew up in the area and attended local schools, just as their children Henry and Charlotte do now.

How does someone keen to get afloat but lacking boating experience gain the practical boating skills required to be both competent and confident? It’s common knowledge that to be a responsible boatie you need knowledge best gained from attending a course such as the Day Skipper. What’s not so commonly known is Coastguard can also assist with practical training on your own boat to compliment this. Coastguard instructors are boaties themselves. Own Boat Tuition is delivered in your familiar environment aboard your own vessel. Your session(s) will be totally customised to your specific areas of interest such as manoeuvring, anchoring, berthing, launching, retrieving, safety drills or rough water handling. Own Boat Tuition is a fantastic and effective option as it’s on your vessel and at your regular marina berth or boat ramp. Therefore the content is 100% relevant to you and those that crew and enjoy the
boat with you. • Our friendly yet professional instructors not only know the subject, they also know how to teach it. • The course is delivered at a time that suits you. • You and your crew (recommended maximum of 3 + instructor on board) can learn the exact same thing at the same time. • You can receive guidance and assistance with vessel setup and safety equipment.

Change your voice when reading stories out loud, or have your child read every other page. When they’re older, share a nice moment by sitting alongside each other as you each read your own book. 3. old 6ft 6in Daniil Medvedev was even better, ending a two-match losing streak against the gifted Russian. Bautista Agat had also performed outstandingly in Spain’s semi-final against Australia when he was quick to pounce on the Nick Kyrgios dangerous serve for a surprisingly easy 6-1 6-4 singles win. Alex De Minaur had played consistently well for Australia but fell 4-6 7-5 6-1 to Nadal. Meanwhile with Maria Folau and Casey Kopua retired and Laura Langman and Katrina Rore resting, the new look Silver Ferns will take confidence from their 64-48 triumph against England in the Netball Nations Cup in Nottingham. England were also missing Jo Harten, Geva Mentor, Helen Housby and Serena Guthrie. But with 21-year-old Maia Wilson combining well with Amaliaranne Ekenasio and slotting 27 goals from 29 attempts, the future looks bright for the Ferns. What made it so impressive was that coach Dame Noeline Taurua used all 11 players. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

It wasn’t Nadal’s first loss in the men’s teams championship, having been beaten by Belgium’s David Goffin. With Roberto Bautista Agat winning the other singles for Spain, it was surprising Nadal didn’t contest the deciding doubles won by Serbia. Presumably he was too knackered after winning four of six singles and two doubles over 10 days. As a spectacle Djokovic’s semifinal singles win against 23-year-

heavy Auckland programme will serve her well. However it shouldn’t be a walk in the park even if dangerous smoke doesn’t choke the event. Experience remains important but age takes its toll and she is not the near-invincible player she was at her peak. Some would argue that is also true of such male stars as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. But they would expect strong debate from the 220,000 fans who watched the first ATP Cup series in Australia when Serbia took the men’s final 2-1 from Davis Cup champions Spain. That just two months separated the two events deserved the criticism of Nadal who reasonably expects better from the world governing body. But what an enthralling spectacle it provided. ice as it was to see Serena Williams win her first tennis tournament in Auckland this month since the birth of her now two-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia, I always preferred her older sister Venus as a gracious personality. Certainly there have been times when Serena was a bad tempered, sore loser, possibly in part because it happened so seldom. But as a power player, she is in a class of her own and just one tantalising short of Australian Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam triumphs. In winning the ASB Classic final 6-3 6-4 over fellow American Jessica Pegul, Serena showed gradual improvement in every match since her error-prone first round doubles with good friend, the popular Caroline Wozniacki. The pair made the final but were comfortably beaten 6-4 6-4 by the much younger American pairing of Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammed. Having donated her prize money to the Australian bush fires cause, Williams would love to emulate Court’s Grand Slam record in Melbourne and hope the fitness she gained from her

Throwing a lifeline: Ben and Nick’s sailing challenge N
ext month, former Howick college student and Beachlands resident Ben Beasley (19) and friend Nick Gardiner (20) will be sailing 1271 nautical miles around Te Ika A Maui in the ‘Round North Island race’. They are using the challenge to raise awareness and funds for the charity Lifeline. The charity receives no Government funding and yet fields a staggering 10,000 calls a month offering a listening ear to people in dark places. It costs $750 to train one helpline volunteer, and, to date, the boys have raised enough money for one and a bit volunteer(s), but they would like to raise enough to train two or more people. The cause hits close to home. The boys both have personal stories of friends and family suffering depression and mental illness The race starts on February 22. It’s being run by the Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand (SSANZ) and supported by Evolution Sails The first race was in 1977 and
was started by Prince Philip off Devonport Wharf as part of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee tour. Sir Peter Blake and Graham Eder were first to the finish. Ben and Nick will be the youngest sailors to undertake the race, with the smallest boat. They estimate it should take them about two weeks to complete. They both started sailing at the age of 9 – learning to sail Optimists, then moving through youth sailing classes, competing in national and international regattas and crewing on keelboats in coastal races and regattas Both work in sailing-related industries – Ben is a trainee spar maker and Nick is a trainee sail maker. Evolution Sails is supporting them for the race. ➤➤The boys’ Lifeline fundraising page is https:// give.everydayhero.com/nz/ sailing-for-lifeline-1 ➤➤They also have a Facebook page where you can follow their progress www.facebook. com/pages/category/Amateur-
