Pumpkin Patch cuts 63 jobs T
he receivers of Pumpkin Patch – which has its headquarters in East Tamaki and a store in Botany – have today advised that the sale process has not attracted a potential buyer and, therefore, it is no longer viable to trade the
business in its current form. Receiver Brendon Gibson from KordaMentha said that without a serious expression of interest being received, there was no choice but to sell all stock and wind down the business.

“Our focus since Pumpkin Patch entered receivership in October was to sell the business as going concern. Unfortunately, while the brand is attractive, the business itself ultimately drew no interest at the conclusion of the sale
process,” he said. “We now move to the next phase of receivership which is to sell off all stock and begin to wind down the business. This decision has not been made lightly and we acknowledge it will come as a blow to staff.”

Mr Gibson said that while all stores will remain open until at least the end of December, there would be immediate restructuring at head office resulting in the loss of 63 jobs this week.

he HRRA has lodged appeals in the Environment and High Courts against the council in an attempt to stop changes that would allow multiple 12-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Park Hill roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill, blocking views over the Hauraki Gulf from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. This relatively small number of properties that have been up-zoned without any submissions could remove these iconic views from the public forever. The association has now moved onto the next mediation stage after its lawyer rejected the Mt Albert test case as not applicable to Howick. “Unfortunately we were not able to progress our case a great deal and, instead, have to go through more test cases as required by Justice Christian Whata (presiding) before getting to the main hearing, which is scheduled to begin on November 28,” the association said. It’s a long and arduous process. “If we succeed with our High Court Appeal, then we are able to progress to the Environment Court. Once more the association has spent hours poring over documents to carry the process forward in consultation with the barrister representing us.” The petition to ‘Protect Stockade Hill Views’ currently has more than 5600 signatures and HRRA has been attempting to deliver this to the Mayor and council for several

Surely the Mayor could accept the petition and acknowledge that a large number of local people are concerned about the loss of these iconic views, even if the council isn’t.” The fund to support the legal fight continues to grow bit by bit due to the generosity of so many people. The appeal total this week is $18,380. “We are grateful to all those who have contributed and enabled us to get this far and to the Times for their support. “Please help us and contribute to this important cause,” the association said. “We need to raise substantially more funds or we will not be able to progress our case much further.” ➤➤Howickians willing to support this urgent cause can make donations to ‘The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association’, ASB Highland Park account number 12-30890123712-02.
Botany by-election may cost over $100,000 ■■By Scott Yeoman The by-election for the recentlyvacated Botany subdivision seat on the Howick Local Board is estimated to cost more than $100,000, Auckland Council confirmed last week. The by-election was triggered by the surprise resignation of newlysworn in member Lucy Schwaner earlier this month. Ms Schwaner, the wife of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, quit minutes after being sworn in at the Howick Local Board’s inauguration ceremony after narrowly losing the vote for chairmanship to David Collings, 4-5. The by-election will be held on February 17, 2017. Auckland Council confirmed the by-election date to the Times early last week and provided more details about it last Thursday morning. It will be a postal vote like the October elections. Voting documents will be posted to the Botany subdivision’s approximately 37,000 eligible voters from January 26, with the ballot closing at 12pm on February 17. Council said there is no alternative under the Local Electoral Act but to run a by-election. The by-election will be conducted under the provisions of
the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001. “The estimated cost of the by-election is expected to be over $100,000,” Council said in a statement. Council governance director Phil Wilson said earlier this month that under the legislation, there is no ability in this case to take the next highest polling candidate from the triennial election. “Where an extraordinary vacancy occurs between September 28 and November 20, a by-election cannot occur any earlier than Friday, February 17, 2017,” he added. Candidate nominations open today (November 24) and will close at 12pm on December 22. Candidates can start campaigning for the by-election at any time, but election signs are only able to be erected on both public and private sites from December 17, 2016. The signs must be removed by midnight on February 16, 2017. A candidate seeking nomination needs to be over the age of 18, a New Zealand citizen registered on the electoral roll, and have two electors enrolled in the Botany subdivision nominate him or her. ➤➤Turn to page 10

fence was taken out by a driver. On Friday night, a section of his neighbour’s fence was also destroyed after a drunk driver swerved onto the property. It’s the third time this has occurred on neighbour Mahendra Prasad’s property in the past five years. “These fences have no capacity to stop a car,” says McFlinn. “We’ve just seen it twice in three days. It’s definitely concerning.” On the same stretch of road, about 500m uphill from the crash site, a subdivision of residential houses is located down a bank, with merely a fence and a few trees to guard against cars going off the road. McFlinn calls it an accident waiting to happen. “If anyone goes through a fence on that corner, they won’t
just be landing on the patio, they’ll be landing on top of somebody’s house.” For the past 14 years, Redoubt Road residents have successfully petitioned for an 80km/h speed limit to be reduced to 50km/h, but Mr McFlinn says drivers still fail to prepare themselves for the sharp bends by choosing to drive above the current limit. It was time to consider a better prevention strategy, he said. Mother-of-one Aggie Brown, who has lived on Redoubt Road for more than 14 years, says the installation of speed cameras could be a great asset to the community. In December 2014, speed cameras were installed on the nearby Mill Road and Murphy’s Road, but not on Redoubt Road. The 54-year-old recalls the

edoubt Road residents are calling for safety measures to be put in place following Sunday afternoon’s fatal car crash, which neighbours describe as a “very bizarre” incident. At about 12.15pm, a car drove off the road and travelled 10 metres across a paddock before colliding with the side of a twostorey brick house. In moments after the crash, witnesses saw a young woman frantically pacing in the driveway, and emergency services pulling a front-seat passenger from the vehicle. Neighbours say it sounded like someone had dropped a load of metal or rubble from the tailgate of a truck, or slammed a heavy door shut. Police have confirmed the 19-year-old female passenger died at the scene after 15 minutes of CPR treatment. The female driver – also 19 - was taken to hospital with moderate injuries. Police say the two people who were in the house at the time were not injured. Redoubt Road resident Grant McFlinn says the incident is a sobering reminder that the regularity of car crashes along the winding Redoubt Road is an ongoing issue for locals. When Mr McFlinn first moved into his house 10 years ago, it was only six months before his
horror of a similar incident on her property 10 years ago, when a 15-year-old female driver and nine-year-old passenger ploughed through her fence, suspending their vehicle over a retaining wall. “She was extremely lucky,” says Mrs Brown. “If the car had hit our house, which is solid concrete, she would have died.” The 15-year-old driver needed 40 stitches in her face following the crash, but Mrs Brown says they never received an apology, or any compensation for the cost of repairing the fence. “Unfortunately, this won’t be the last. It just seems to be a continuing thing ... there’s a real issue with it.” The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

he Howick Lions Club has been working over the past eight months painting buildings at the Howick Historical Village. As well as painting at the village, they have also been involved in repairing some of the buildings under the watchful eye of local Howick historian Alan La Roche. The on-going projects which will continue through next year has helped to cement the individual commitment by the
Lions to community projects on a strictly volunteer basis, says vice president of Howick Lions, Colin Salt. “The members have enjoyed working as a team and those involved say it’s fun contributing their labour to a project that helps protect a well-known Howick landmark,” he says. Next year they hope to have involvement with the local Scout groups working alongside. “This is one way for the scouts to earn their community pins.”
Last week at the Whangarei Lions Convention club members were overjoyed to hear that they have won a 100 year International Voluntary Service Button for their volunteer work at the Village project. At the dock
Irate commuter wants answers ■■By Nick Krause An angry commuter is looking for answers after Fuller’s ferry failed to show for the 7.30am sailing from Half Moon Bay to the city on Friday. Maria Devereux, from Cockle Bay, said she and more than 100 passengers were left stranded after the no-show. The advertising creative director missed a morning meeting after she was left with no option but to drive into the city. She said it is also not the first time the Fullers ferry has not turned up. “We were all lined up at the dock checking the time and wondering where the ferry was and I was just thinking ‘here we go again’. “People started panicking and cursing and then rushing for cars. I was so angry I was going to be late for work.” To add insult to injury, Mrs Devereux said there was no update via Fullers’ MyFerry app. The company website says the app was developed “to make ferry travel smarter and easier”. It reads: “The app will give you access to destination information, timetables and fares, purchase, view or use QR code tickets to board your ferry, renew your monthly and multi-trip passes, book tours and events and receive instant notifications of updates to your ferry services. “Whether you travel with us regularly or not, MyFerry will make every journey with us
easier and more efficient.” That didn’t happen yesterday morning. “There were no travel alerts to the app. No Fullers rep was at the wharf,” Mrs Devereux said. She called Fullers who explained the travel alert to the app had been processed but hadn’t gone through “for some reason”. “I explained this had happened before and asked to be called back with information on how it would be fixed but I haven’t received a call,” she told the Times. “They were very dismissive and didn’t seem too concerned about the lack of information they provide when a sailing is cancelled.” She commutes on the ferry twice a week and has done since June. “In that time it’s happened to me three times, so I would question how many other times this happens,” Mrs Devereux said. “I got to the city at 8:40am after a one hour 10 minute commute. I was late for an 8:30am meeting. The ferry usually gets in a few minutes after 8am. “This caused me unnecessary stress and left me doubting whether I can in fact rely on Fullers and their Half Moon Bay
service. “I know commuters on the Waiheke sailings are notified well in advance if there are cancellations so why shouldn’t we get the same service?” Fullers confirmed the 7.30am sailing was cancelled yesterday as two vessels had broken down. A call centre operator told the Times it also forced the cancellation of two other sailings yesterday – the 7.30am trip to Waiheke Island and the 8.30am exiting Waiheke. The operator apologised for the MyFerry app apparently not advising passengers at Half Moon Bay and said he would advise the company’s IT department. Service schedule delays and cancellations would have been available via the Fullers website or text alerts. Meanwhile Fullers, owned by Scottish transport magnate Sir Brian Souter (who has other NZ assets including ManaBus and Howick & Eastern Buses), has a bit of explaining to do regarding the cancellation. Auckland Transport’s media relations manager Mark Hannan would only confirm there was a late cancellation by Fullers on Friday. “Auckland Transport will be meeting Fullers next week to discuss this.”

Accident Compensation Corporation - ACC is New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme. It provides no-fault personal injury insurance cover to all New Zealand residents and visitors to New Zealand. This includes mental injury (due to a criminal act or resulting from physical injury), some forms of damage to prostheses, and death due to a physical injury. It can also include injury, which happens gradually because of your work. Compensation can be in the form of payments and / or help with the cost of treatment and rehabilitation. ACC provides cover instead of the ability to sue for personal injury. ACC does not provide cover if your personal injury has been caused by a degenerative condition or an age-related condition or illness. ACC generally doesn’t cover common illnesses, but you could be covered if the illness is caused by exposure to - for example – a poison, asbestos or work-related exposure to disease (for example legionnaire’s disease.)
ACC cover may be available to the deceased’s family when someone dies as a result of an accident, a work-related disease or infection, or medical treatment, even if the deceased had other insurance policies, and regardless of how old they were, or how or where the injury happened. Families of New Zealand residents fatally injured on a short trip overseas, and families of visitors who are fatally injured in New Zealand, may also be covered by ACC. If you are injured, your first step is to get treatment for the injury. The health professional that provides your treatment should help you fill in the appropriate form to register your ACC claim. If this does not happen, ask your treatment provider about filling out an ACC45 form. A list of treatment providers that can register ACC claims are on the ACC website. You will need to lodge your application within 12 months of your injury (late claims are allowed only in some cases). ACC can generally get back to you with their decision within 21 days. They will tell you whether your claim is accepted, and what kinds of assistance you are entitled to. The Code of Claimants Rights outlines what your rights are when you are

phone call at 5.30am in the morning is not the way you want to start the
day. As a concerned male voice on the other end informed Dorothy Bigwood about a school alarm going off, she jumped out of bed and called the fire brigade. Next, she rang the deputy principal of Bucklands Beach Primary School (BBPS). Some more calls were made to the right people before she took a deep breath. Having instinctively reacted to the situation, she quietly reminded herself that she is no longer the principal of BBPS. After nine-and-a-half years as head of school, Mrs Bigwood had finally taken the plunge. She has moved on. She is the new principal at Cockle Bay School. “Bucklands Beach Primary has been such a big part of my life that I have to keep telling myself that, that is them and this is us now,” she says sitting in her new spacious office at Cockle Bay School. She smiles at the old memory of giving up her big office and moving into the room with the photo copying machine, when the number of students in the school increased at BBPS. “The challenge of a bigger

school is very exciting. We have around 816 students with 33 classes at Cockle Bay.” On Labour weekend, Mrs Bigwood did the big crossover from a school established in 1955 at Clovelly Road to the one built in 1956 at Sandspit Road. The Board of Trustees of Cockle Bay School wanted Mrs Bigwood to take over in term three since former principal Graeme Lomas had retired. “However, I was committed to a trip to China prior to the appointment. “It was an honour to be a part of a principal’s delegation supported by the Confucius
Institute that promotes Mandarin language in schools.” She says that the wonderful powhiri welcoming her with an outstanding kapa haka is something she treasures. “There was also a bus full of children from the old school with six teachers who came and sang for me. Later, the kids came into my office and were jumping up and down my chair,” she laughs. “Both schools are part of an old community. It’s the same issues we are tackling but different schools. “Finally it’s building relationships that really matter,” she says.

A programme that helps families adopt retired racing greyhounds is anticipating its 2000th placement before Christmas. Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) programme director, Noel Brown, says the 2000th adoption should occur in the next three to four weeks. “We have kennels in Auckland, Levin and Christchurch all vying to find that landmark family,” he said. GAP launched in May 2006. It found homes for 75 dogs in its first year, but now places around 300 retired racing greyhounds each year. Mr Brown says his ultimate aim is to see the number of dogs retired to Kiwi homes each year increased to 500 by 2018.
Greyhounds make great family pets. They are gentle, childfriendly dogs that don’t smell and don’t bark much. “They make a great loyal mate because they are laid-back and always want to be around you,” Mr Brown said. Most of the dogs GAP places go to families with children. Adoption will be free for the family that takes the 2000th placement. They will also receive a free lead, coat and a bag of grain-free food for their new pet. The adoption fee is normally $380, which covers a thorough
inspection of both the animal and the potential owner’s home. GAP ensures properties are fully fenced, and all dogs receive a full health check, vaccinations, desexing, micro-chipping and a temperament assessment, including how they interact with cats and small dogs, before being matched to their new families. “People are always surprised to learn that more than half our greyhounds share homes with cats and smaller dogs. Greyhounds are a fantastic addition to a home.”

➤➤From page 2 Each nomination must be accompanied by a $200 GST inclusive deposit, Council said. The Times had asked Council at the start of last week to confirm the expected cost of the by-election. Last Tuesday, a spokeswoman said: “At this stage we won’t be able to confirm the estimated cost of the by-election until the proposed budget has been approved by the Council’s Finance and Performance Committee on November 30.” However, the Council spokeswoman was then able to confirm the estimated cost to the Times last Thursday morning. The result of the by-election will be available on the afternoon of Friday, February 17, and the Times will have live coverage of it on our website and on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Meanwhile, Lucy Schwaner responded to the Council’s by-election announcement with a statement last Thursday morning. “I have been contacted by some media outlets regarding a media release from Auckland Council today,” Ms Schwaner wrote. “I stand by my reasons for leaving the Howick Local Board. “It is unfortunate that there is a cost for appointing a replacement member of the Howick Local Board. However the cost to the community is far greater if the Howick Local Board were allowed to continue unchecked and without its deep problems or poor leadership highlighted for the public.” She said leaving the Howick Local Board “was the most honourable course of action given I have no confidence in the leadership of David Collings”. Ms Schwaner said she outlined her reasons for departure in an open letter to the community two weeks ago. In her statement, she also referred to Mike Turinsky being the highest ranked unsuccessful candidate in the October election. “I note that the costs for a by-election can be avoided if other candidates and groups decide not to field a candidate and allow Mr Turinsky, as the first runner up, the opportunity to fill the vacancy unchallenged as many expect he should,” Ms Schwaner said. The Times approached Council in regards to this claim, but a spokeswoman said they would not comment on Ms Schwaner’s statement. “The position is that the process has to be followed and the nomination process starts again. If there is no contest and only one candidate is nominated that person will be declared elected and there will be no postal ballot. “If Mr Turinsky wishes to stand he will need to comply with the legal nomination process again like any other candidate.” ➤➤Are you planning on running as a candidate in the Botany subdivision byelection? From local schools like Howick Primary, Macleans Primary, Mellons Bay, Cockle Bay and Our Lady Star of the Sea School to service organisations like Rotary, and Howick Volunteer Fire Brigade, it’s amazing to see the community come together to make it a wonderful spectacle.. According to some of the elves who have been working hard on the parade, Santa will arrive on a float organised by Uxbridge Arts. Pre-parade entertainment by the Triple A Aerobic Academy will start at 1.30pm, so make sure you have a good vantage spot for yourselves. Whilst most spectators come and enjoy the kaleidoscopic show of creative floats, dance, song and entertainment, not many are aware of the people who put in the hard yards to make it look effortless. Organised by the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, there are many forces that come together to make it all happen. Without support from the Howick Local Board, Times Newspapers, Pak’nSave Botany, Freightplus, Sign Formula and many volunteers, the Howick Santa Parade would not be the success it is.

Christmas is one of the most stressful times for families, said Mat Badger, Salvation Army East City Corps officer, at the launch of the annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal. “We’ve known families who have been very distressed because their father walked out of the house on Christmas day and they have never seen him since,” he said. “It is a very emotional time for those who can’t afford to give their family the things they would like to at Christmas.” One of the longest-running gift gathering projects in New Zealand, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal works with The Salvation Army to collect Christmas presents so that disadvantaged families can celebrate Christmas with a little more festivity. The target this year is to collect around 50,000 Christmas gifts nationwide. “We give parents the gifts along with the wrapping paper and sticking tape so that they can wrap them up and let their children believe that they’ve bought them for their children,” Mr Badger said. Any gift donations from the public (gifts do not need to be from Kmart) can be dropped at the Christmas trees located at Kmart stores nationwide. From there, the nation’s real elves, The Salvation Army, collect the gifts and distribute them to families in need.

Store manager Kmart Botany, Teneile Patea hopes to double last year’s contribution. “Last year we collected 3000 gifts and this year we hope to push that figure to 6000,” she said after the celebratory cake cutting. All the shoppers at the store were given a piece of cake after the traditional blessing and a waiata; while manager Alice Teinakore kept the mood upbeat with lighthearted banter. Members of the Salvation Army East City Corps spread the cheer by singing the all-time-favourite Jingle Bells as everyone in the store merrily joined in.

A COMEDY BY MICHELE AMAS SEASON: FEB 25 TO MARCH 18, 8PM
Four very different women answer a flyer for “The Pink Hammer Workshop” -- a ladies-only woodwork class. They turn up expecting empowerment and sisterhood, but on arrival they find that Maggie, the advertised tutor, has gone AWOL and that her husband, Woody, doesn’t want a bunch of crazy women in his workshop. But does he have a choice?

Jim Wormold, an underemployed vacuum cleaner salesman in 1950s Cuba, is struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s extravagant lifestyle. So when the British Secret Service asks him to become their “man in Havana”, he can’t afford to say no. There’s just one problem … he doesn’t know anything! A wonderfully funny and fast-moving romp.
Set in 1920s New York, the story follows Nick Carraway as he moves into a world of wealth and indulgence through an association with his mysterious neighbour Jay Gatsby. Nick is caught up in a story of love, longing and loss. Romance, yearning, gaiety, opulence, comedy, violence, betrayal, murder and tragedy – plus music – the story ticks every box.
Ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice wants to have his rich wife murdered so he can get his hands on her inheritance. When he discovers her affair with Max Halliday, he comes up with the perfect plan to kill her, but the carefully orchestrated set-up involving an old schoolmate goes awry. Now he must outwit the police and avoid having his plot detected.
Every Tuesday, the Cabin Fever Club meet for coffee at Devonport’s Sour Dough Café. They are literary types -- cantankerous, opinionated and often amusing. What binds them together is their mutual love of books. But with the unstoppable advance of technology putting their livelihoods under threat, will it mean the end of books? A play with shelf-loads of laughs.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Gifts to enjoy to the last drop
From breaking eggs and washing fruit to mixing the ingredients, there are so many tasks kids can safely do in the kitchen.
Do your friends and family love to toast on special occasions? Christmas lunches, dinners and barbecues will bring Kiwis together this holiday season and there are many options available to keep everyone happy. Here are a few drinkable gift ideas they’re sure to love: ✦ Tea – Vanilla, caramel, peppermint, oolong, pu’erh, matcha, ginger— there’s a lot more than Earl Grey on today’s tea scene. ✦ Hot chocolate – Whether storebought or homemade (you’ll find tons of recipe ideas online), nothing beats a soothing mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. ✦ Herbal teas – Great for relaxation, digestion or simply warming up, herbal teas are renowned for their many virtues. Sweet, tart or spicy— what flavours do your friends and family most enjoy? ✦ Coffee – Latté mixes, flavored coffees, imported coffees, sustainable brands; there’s a wide range of specialty coffees available on the market today. Give someone a bag of their favourite blend, or help them discover something new! ✦ Beer – For the hops lover in your

hy not let the kids help you tackle your holiday to-dos by delegating some tasks around the kitchen? Here are some tips to keep things fun and chaos-free. Ask for your kids’ input as soon as you start planning your holiday meals. Show them a few recipe options and let them choose their favourite, which they’ll then need to help you prepare. Sit down together to list the ingredients you’ll need, and then head to the grocery store to pick everything up. Before you start to cook, ask your children to wash their hands and remind them not to lick their fingers while preparing food. You should also give them an apron to wear. To make sure they understand each step, read the entire recipe with them and explain the different cooking terms used.
Kid-friendly tasks Depending on their age, your children can help you cook in a variety of ways. Among other things they can: ✦ Wash fruits and vegetables and mash them with a fork ✦ Squeeze fruits to extract the juice ✦ Cut soft foods with rounded scissors ✦ Measure and pour dry ingredients ✦ Break eggs ✦ Grease baking sheets and muffin pans ✦ Spread dough with a rolling pin ✦ Shape dough into balls (or use a cookie cutter) ✦ Mix the ingredients Finally, once your recipe is complete, your children will be able to help you straighten up the kitchen. Remind them not to touch any dishes or food before they’ve had a chance to cool off. Voilà—all that’s left is the taste test!
LONE STAR BOTANY
life, an assortment of locally brewed beers should do the trick. ✦ Cider – Sparkling or flat, iced or warm, cider has the ability to make all taste buds happy—as an aperitif or for dessert, or even along with the main course! ✦ Wine and spirits – Whether your friends prefer wine or brandy, you can’t go wrong by giving your hosts a nice bottle to share on a special occasion. Are you looking for something unique? Why not wrap up some artisanal soft drinks, or even a few bottles of luxury sparkling water?

Duck leg confit with Orange and rosemary garlic mashed potatoes chicken legs Brace yourself for the perfect blend of flavours: garlicky mashed potatoes, rich duck confit and a sweet, fruity sauce. You’ll definitely be asking for seconds.
Tender and succulent with a slight hint of citrus, this surprising dish is a guaranteed hit with your guests. Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 2 hours Servings: 4
Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes Servings: 4
INGREDIENTS ✦ 1 head of garlic ✦ 1 tbsp vegetable oil ✦ 4 confit duck legs (found at some supermarkets, specialist stores or butchers) ✦ 8 red potatoes, washed, diced, skin on ✦ 1/2 cup butter ✦ 1/3 cup cream ✦ Salt and pepper, to taste For the sauce ✦ 1 small shallot, finely chopped ✦ 2 tbsp jam, your choice ✦ 2 tbsp maple syrup ✦ Salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS Heat oven according to duck leg package directions. Trim top off head of garlic to expose tops of cloves. Place garlic on a square sheet of foil and drizzle with vegetable oil. Wrap garlic, seal pouch and place it in oven. Put duck legs in a shallow
dish then place in oven with garlic for 20-25 mins. Boil potatoes in salted water for about 10 mins or until soft. Drain. Remove garlic from oven, open foil and let cool. Add butter and cream to potatoes and beat until they become smooth and creamy. Press garlic with fingers to remove centre cloves (they should be a nice golden hue and a paste-like consistency; crush if needed). Add to potatoes, mix well, and season with salt and pepper. Remove duck legs from oven. In a small saucepan, use 2-3 tbsp of duck fat to sauté the shallots for a few minutes without browning them. Add jam and maple syrup. Mix well and salt. Serve with green vegetables or a salad.
INGREDIENTS ✦ 1 tbsp butter ✦ 3 tbsp olive oil ✦ 4 big chicken legs ✦ 2 onions, finely chopped ✦ 1 tsp curry powder ✦ 3 tbsp maple syrup ✦ 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped ✦ 2 rosemary twigs ✦ 1 cup chicken broth ✦ 2 oranges, peeled (remove pith) and quartered
✦ Salt and pepper, to taste ✦ Thinly sliced oranges, to serve DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 180°C. Melt butter in a large casserole. Add oil and brown chicken legs for about 5 minutes each side. Once golden, remove chicken from casserole and add onions, curry powder and maple syrup. Mix well and cook on low heat for a few minutes. Put chicken back in casserole, add
garlic, rosemary, broth and quartered oranges. Add salt and pepper. Mix well. Cover and put in oven for 90 minutes. Stir occasionally, basting the chicken legs with the broth. Serve on thinly sliced oranges and drizzle with cooking juices.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Celebrate a German Christmas
W
ho else could possibly be better equipped to present A German Christmas in New Zealand than Bach Musica NZ with their very own German music and artistic director Rita Paczian. A New Zealand resident for more than two decades, this internationally highly sought-after conductor is regarded as one of Australasia’s most dynamic. She is also known to frequently include New Zealand premieres in her programmes, contributing to the ever-growing musical spectrum in Aotearoa. It is of no surprise that for this final concert of Bach Musica’s 2016 season, Rita Paczian has chosen two rarely performed Christmas Cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann to be presented for the first time on New Zealand soil. On a side note, Georg Friedrich Telemann, considered Germany’s most famous composer at one point, was music director at St Jacob’s church - Rita’s old church in Hamburg! Bach Musica NZ will also be featuring a range of NZ’s finest soloists. Their impressive CVs include highlights such as playing for the Queen at a private dinner party, graduating with a BSc in Psychology and Mathematics, winning a RNZ Concert Listeners’ Choice Award, and Soprano Madison Nonoa being the runner-up of this year’s Lexus Song Quest. She, counter-tenor Stephen Diaz, tenor Iain Tetley and baritone Jarvis Dams will be
There might not be snow, candied apples or mulled wine, but there certainly will be the spirit of a traditional German Christmas in the music. Photo supplied joined by Huw Dann on trumpet, and Alison Dunlop and Alison Jepson on oboe. There might not be snow, candied apples or mulled wine, but there certainly will be the spirit of a traditional German Christmas in the music. And that is the true spirit of A German Christmas.

Midnight Madness glowing success
M
idnight Madness has been dubbed a glowing success. Howick Village Business Association manager Jenny Foster says she cannot be sure of exact numbers but believes the crowd exceeded those of previous years. “In the past, council have estimated 30,000 to 40,000,” she said. “I think it was busier this year because we had more families.” Visitors weren’t the only ones wearing big smiles. “Most of the retailers were very happy. We were very happy, as were the police,” she said. “All-inall it was another great night for Howick and the weather was magic. “We’re looking forward to the next one.”

Mumtrepreneurs host local market
O
n Saturday, November 26, the East Auckland Mums with Bubs in Biz network will hold its first market at Howick’s Picton Centre. The Howick Mums Christmas Market runs from 9.30am until 12.30, and features sweet treats, gourmet oils and spices, furniture, baby and children’s clothing, wellness products and services (including free chiropractic assessments), handmade candles, and unique, handmade jewellery. The market also offers a range of children’s entertainment and activities, including face painting, a play area, and interactive music sessions. East Auckland Mums with Bubs in Biz is the initiative of two local mumtrepreneur, Clare Williamson and Holly Blair. The two women connected through their passion for supporting other mums juggling young children and business. “We’ve both come across obstacles, and thought ‘how could we make it easier for other mums in business?’“ says Clare. “How can we facilitate the freedom for mums to pursue their dreams?” she says. They plan for the business network to host regular meetings, markets, and other events. The market is sponsored by Connections in the Home, an in-home childcare provider. For enquiries about the market and/or business network, please call Holly or Clare on 022-108-4165.
Gift ideas for teens It isn’t always easy to find the perfect gift for teenagers. Of course, the first thing you need to take into account is the specific interests of the teens on your gift list. Here are some suggestions that will make them really happy on Christmas morning.
Techie teens
“Mumtrepreneur” Clare Williamson wants to help young mums to pursue their dreams. Photo supplied
WHAT: Howick Mums Christmas Market WHEN: Saturday November 26, 9.30am-12.30pm WHERE: Picton Centre, 120 Picton St, Howick
Most teenagers love tech gadgets and toys. Try one of these: ✦ A USB key with a difference (in the shape of an animal or that features a cartoon character or that’s integrated into a piece of jewellery) ✦ A vibrating speaker that can be connected to a musical device ✦ A backpack with a gadget for recharging electronic devices (game consoles, cell phones, MP3 players) ✦ A kit that includes a digitiser and stylus for transforming a standard screen into a touch screen
Active teens Try one of the following products for young people who love sports. They’re both popular with teenagers. ✦ A Ripstik/wave board (a twowheeled hinged skateboard that swivels 360 degrees)
✦ Kangoo Jumps (boots equipped with a tension spring for bouncing – they’re fun for walking, aerobics or running)
Stylish teens Teens, especially girls, pay serious attention to their physical appearance. For Christmas, you could offer your teen one of these treats: ✦ A gift certificate for a haircut, colouring and styling ✦ A gift card from her favourite clothing store ✦ Products from her preferred line of cosmetics ✦ A session of professional body treatments (scrub, wrap, body hair removal, etc.)

Photo essay
Having a gala time Times Photographer Wayne Martin was there to capture the fun fiesta at the Christmas Carnival in Pigeon Mountain Primary School. Over 2000 brave souls attended the Pigeon Mountain Primary School’s Christmas Carnival despite the weather! The odd shower didn’t put anyone off having fun! The showers eventually gave way to sunshine which was a welcome respite. There were large queues of students and families hoping to dunk teachers in icy cold water- not sure why, laughs principal Ian Dickinson. “The biggest attraction financially was the Chinese food stall, but the Nerf Gun firing
range surprised us all with its popularity. Having a fun run at the start of the gala was a great way to get things underway, and a good opportunity for families to enjoy some active time together,” he says. The $17,000 made on the day ensures that the PTA’s goal to provide shade sails over both the junior and senior playgrounds, can be achieved. “These will be installed over the Christmas holidays and be in place ready for the New Year,” he says.

inlay McKechnie chose a six iron for Whitford Golf Club’s 11th hole. Playing in the junior club day competition on Sunday October 30, the 11-year-old from Howick teed up and struck the ball, opting for a draw (right to left). The ball needed to travel about 140 metres to the hole and Finlay had struck it well. It was looking good. It landed short, just in front of the green. It bounced, and then rolled. It rolled one, two, three and then four metres. It rolled into the hole. Hole-in-one. Andrew McKechnie, who was his son’s caddy for the competition and was standing behind him on the tee box at the time, said Finlay’s initial reaction was one of “disbelief”. He turned around with his hands in the air and with a big grin on his face said to himself: “Yes, finally done it.” Finlay then turned to his caddy: “Beat that, dad.” Mr McKechnie said his son looked “chuffed” with the achievement. He has come pretty close to getting a hole-in-one before. A month ago Finlay’s ball sneaked past the ninth hole at Whitford Golf Club, where he

is a member, “by a whisker”. Mr McKechnie said Finlay has been swinging a club since he was three but has only been playing seriously for about three years. The Year 7 student at Sancta Maria College now plays off a 17 handicap. He absolutely loves the game. “He regularly plays in age group tournaments well above his age group, which is generally an under 14 division,” Mr McKechnie said. Finlay recently played in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty age group championships as well as the North Island age group championships. He has been picked for the Auckland Golf junior development squad. “Between Auckland Golf and his coach Stuart Thompson, they are ensuring that he is getting the right development and coaching,” Mr McKechnie said. “At such a young age, the future looks very promising for him.” Finlay said he wants to represent his province and country and one day turn professional.

SALON OF THE YEAR 2016
How does Priapus Shot Work?
®
The natural serum that produces the effects of the Priapus Shot® is known as the platelet-rich fibrin matrix or PRFM. The treatment takes about 15 min-
utes to perform using a tiny needle (a topical anaesthetic makes the process virtually painless), but 60-75 mins is allowed for a full consultation and treatment. Benefits typically include tissue growth, growth of new blood vessels and stronger erections. And, because the treatment uses the patient’s own enriched blood enriched plasma, it is non-allergenic and free of harmful side effects.
What will the Priapus Shot® do for me? • Increases firmness of erection and enhanced appearance • Increases penile length and girth • Increases blood flow and circulation • Improved sexual capabilities • Increased sexual stamina, sensation and pleasure Note that individual responses do occur. Using the same propriety techniques used in the P-Shot® Dr Morunga can also deliver the parallel female treatment called the O-Shot® which also enhances sexual function in women and helps in urinary incontinence. Book an appointment to find out more. Contact Dr Mark Morunga at: Essential Mens Clinic Botany East Care Specialists Clinic, 260 Botany Rd, Botany. Ph 0508 2MAN UP (0508 2626 87) Mobile 021 272 6050

OUR HOMES TODAY
Has market peaked? Lifestyle property sales for quarter down on last year
D
Personal preferences aside, there are some basics that all fun and functional art studios require. Photo supplied
living space
Creating an art studio An art studio at home is the perfect place to express creativity without having to stow away works in progress. Regardless of whether it’s for painting, sculpting or drawing, chances are the home studio will be just as unique as the artist in residence. Personal preferences aside, there are some basics that all fun and functional art studios require. ➤➤Proper lighting The best light to work by is natural. But white fluorescent lighting will get the job done if the studio doesn’t have any windows. ➤➤Good ventilation Fresh air is always a good thing, regardless of the craft. However, some artists tend to work with products that emit harmful fumes, such as oil paints. If the studio doesn’t have
any windows, make sure to have a fan or two on hand to keep the air circulating. ➤➤Easily accessible supplies Tools are the agents of an artist’s creations, so take good care of them. Storage boxes, bins and cabinets are great for keeping supplies organised and clean. ➤➤A comfortable setting When the time comes to take a step back and muse over handiwork, make sure there is somewhere relaxing to do it. Cosy chairs, a radio or even a coffee maker will provide the necessary comforts when you feel drained. ➤➤Private gallery The studio will eventually become an art gallery. Hooks, shelves, tables and easels are useful for hanging or displaying work, as well as your reference photos.
ata released today by the Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ) shows there were 52 more lifestyle property sales (+2.5%) for the three months ended October 2016 than for the three months ended October 2015. Overall, there were 2175 lifestyle property sales in the three months ended October 2016, compared to 2230 lifestyle property sales for the three months ended September 2016 (-2.5%), and 2123 lifestyle property sales for the three months ended October 2015. A total 9115 lifestyle properties were sold in the year to October 2016, 17 per cent more than were sold in the year to October 2015. The value of lifestyle properties sold was $6.91 billion for the year to October 2016. The median price for all lifestyle properties sold in the three months to October 2016 was $20,000 higher at $545,000 compared to the three months ended October 2015 (+3.8%). The median price rose $15,000 (+2.8%) compared to September. “Sales volumes in the lifestyle market for the three month period ending October 2016 remain strong but reflect a consistent easing over the last several months. Variable conditions are influencing the market but a shortage of supply is a constant theme, the net result being pressure on prices”, says REINZ Rural Spokesman Brian
Peacocke. ➤➤Regional highlights include: A solid strengthening in volumes in Northland; An easing of volumes and shortage of supply reported in areas including Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki; A strong market in the Rotorua area where $900,000 is deemed average, but good activity in the $1.5million to $1.7m million range, and strong interest from Auckland purchasers up to $2m million; Increased volumes in the Wanganui to Wellington region, with a brisk market in the Manawatu up to $1.2m million; Solid conditions in the Nelson / Marlborough region where sales volumes are very consistent; A continuing healthy market around Christchurch with strong interest in quality properties up to $1m million but slower above that level; a reluctant market in mid Canterbury; and Easing volumes throughout the Otago region but a good steady month of sales in October for Southland. Nine regions recorded an increase in sales compared to October 2015. Wellington recorded the largest increase in sales (+60) in the three months to October 2016 compared to October 2015, Northland saw an increase of 44 sales and Manawatu/Wanganui an
increase of 37 sales. Compared to September 2016, four regions recorded an increase in sales. Compared to October 2015 the number of sales for the three months to October 2016 rose by 52 sales. The national median price for lifestyle blocks rose by $20,000 (+3.8%) for the three months to October 2016 compared to the three months to October 2015. The median price for lifestyle blocks in Auckland rose by $135,000 (+13.0%) from $1,035,000 for the three months to October 2015 to $1,170,000 for the three months to October 2016. Over the same time period, the median price rose by 31.9%per cent in Waikato to a new record of $620,000, and rose by 5.5 per cent to $612,000 for Canterbury. The median number of days to sell for lifestyle properties improved by 11 days in the three months to October 2016 compared to the three months to October 2015 to sit at 56 days. Compared to the three months ended October the median number of days to sell improved by six days. Waikato recorded the shortest number of days to sell in October 2016 at 34 days, followed by Auckland at 42 days and Bay of Plenty at 48 days. West Coast recorded the longest number of days to sell at 200 days, followed by Nelson and Otago at 100 days.

H
owick Pakuranga Cricket Club’s Colin ‘Dutchie’ de Grandhomme has notched up a brilliant record on his debut for the Black Caps. De Grandhomme was also named Man of the Match as the Black Caps cruised to victory against Pakistan in Christchurch. The Auckland Aces all-rounder recorded a brilliant 1st innings 6/41. The Black Caps secured a convincing victory over Pakistan in their test match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday. Jeet Raval – the team’s other

debutant - hit a short ball to the square leg boundary to clinch New Zealand’s eight wicket victory. It was an incredible start for de Grandhomme who took six test wickets and a record for the Black Caps in the test match. He picked up his maiden test wicket after coming into the attack in the ninth over and cleaning up Azhar Ali for 15 with a beauty which ripped out Ali’s off stump. By lunch (day two – the first day was rained off) he had taken 3-23 with Pakistan at 88-4. De Grandhomme’s second wicket was a lovely out swinger that Babar
Azam edged to Ross Taylor at first slip. NZ were 53-3. His third wicket – which put him on 3-20- claimed the big wicket of Yonis Khan for 2. The ball pitched up, swung and was caught in the cordon. And his fourth wicket came after lunch. De Grandhomme was on fire. He picked up the wicket of Asad Shafiq. His bowling figures at that point – 4/30 off 11. His fifth wicked scalp was Sohail Khan who went for 9, then de Grandhomme finished off the Pakistan innings at 133 and claimed 6-41 – the best figures by a New Zealander on test debut.
Just Hardwood Floors Howick Premier Men failed to score a win against a tough Marist side despite getting seven runners on base throughout the game. Whilst the game was extremely close with the Howick side scoring one run in the first Innings by a huge home run from Jarrod Bailey out to centre field and a further home run to Harry Valk to right field in the 3rd innings, this did not prove to be enough against the Marist side who scored all their runs (three in total) in the 3rd innings. Harry Valk was outstanding with the bat throughout the entire game with three solid hits from three turns at bat. Huw Davies also smashed a hit to centre field but got tagged out trying to steal 2nd. Greg Anderson pitched for the Marist side gaining only one strikeout, compared to Howick’s Campbell Gibson who had a formidable 12 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Howick batters failed to do enough damage with the bat whereas Marist capitalised on a few hits and a couple of fielding errors by the Howick side to outscore the disappointed Howick side. ➤➤No men’s games this weekend due to the Ramblers
Club’s Rocky Chote Tournament – which Howick has not entered.
Window Factory Howick Premier Women v Marist – 10-0 win to Howick
Window Factory Howick Premier Women put on one of their best batting performances ever in a sound victory over the Marist side. Marist, which featured two imported players in Canadian Pitcher, Kara Stirling and American Kim-An Quan, failed to score any runs in the entire game with only one player – Tatiana Rouru – getting a safe hit. Once again Veronika Peckova pitched a blinder with 13 strikeouts and was supported by her team mates with their aggressive batting. Outstanding batters in the game were Stefanie Smith with three hits from four turns at bat, Zoe Tolhopf with two from three and Breanna Gibson with a safe hit and two walks. Other batters who did damage were Kailee White, Tamzin Smith, Marissa Berkes, and Veronika Peckova, with eagle eyed Courtney Warren gaining a couple of walks. ➤➤This weekend’s game is 2pm at Prince Edward Park, Papakura against Ardmore Marist.

McLennan – contemporary homes in a community environment T
he McLennan Development at Takanini is an exciting new concept – a modern development built to foster trusted old values of community spirit. It combines an energy-efficient house design with parks and pathways for residents to meet and catch up with the neighbours.
Stage 1D of the overall 550 architecturallydesigned homes will be ready for occupation in October and November 2017. Sizes range from two to five bedroom homes, available in stand-alone single or doublestorey and terrace design homes. This initial stage of the development – Stage 1D – includes 23 homes – 15 fourbedroom terrace homes, 2 five-bedroom stand alone homes, and 6 two-bedroom homes. McLennan is located at 75 Walters Road in Takanini and the contemporary design of
the homes has already attracted lots of positive attention from architects and designers. McLennan will showcase the latest in architectural trends and is a perfect solution to the shortage of affordable, quality housing in this thriving area of south-east Auckland district. As a ‘turn key construction programme’ it means that buyers only pay 10 per cent on the signing of the contract and no further money is paid until the house is completed with its CCC and title. Prices will start from $619,000 for a twobedroom home to $865,000 for a five-bedroom home. The homes are architecturally-designed and expertly planned to create a thriving and vibrant new community. They will be located around beautifully landscaped laneways, which have been
designed to reduce traffic flow and make stepping outside the front door much safer. They also provide a quiet and friendly atmosphere for residents. Pocket parks are included at McLennan providing access to green space and safe play areas for children. They will also enhance the walkways connecting the wider neighbourhood. The variations in the size and design of the homes along with the types of materials and colours used means it will appeal to a wide range of people. It will attract a variety of different families and budgets while creating an attractive living environment for all. The wide range of homes McLennan offers will foster diversity among owners and create a balanced, safe and thriving community. McLennan includes a residents’ society (with an annual fee) which will cre-
ate a strong and cohesive community. With the Takanini Village approx 1km away, residents will have easy access to a new medical facility as well good retail therapy, choice of restaurants, cafes and other facilities. All of the homes are being sold off the plan and interest is high. So if you are searching for a new, affordable home within a secure community, McLennan could be the perfect location for you. Plucky Ireland boosts Lions’ belief
Fox fourth equal at Aussie Open Beachlands golfer Ryan Fox has finished tied for fourth at the Australian Open in Sydney. Fox, the son of All Black great and selector Grant Fox, he began the final round yesterday in a tie for second, two shots back from leader Geoff Ogilvy. Playing with world No 5 Jordan Spieth at the Royal Sydney Golf Club, Fox finished with a one-under 71 on the final day leaving him 10-under for the tournament and tied for fourth with four others. Spieth joined Australians Ashley Hall and Cameron Smith tied for the lead at 12-under, then went on to win the event on the first playoff hole, Stuff reported. Fox told the Times he was extremely happy with the week. “To contend in that kind of company on Sunday afternoon was a great experience,” he said. “If a couple more putts had of gone in on that back nine, things could have been different but very pleasing to play well in that situation. “(It was) a great learning experience to play with Jordan on Sunday and to see how he hung in there all day and managed to sneak a win late on that back nine. “He was a pleasure to play with and nice to know I can compete with one of the best players in the world.”

reland’s two outstanding rugby tests against the All Blacks should dispel fears that next year’s British Lions and Ireland tour of New Zealand will be a disaster for the tourists. Sure it is a tough, embracing three tests and matches against our five Super Rugby franchises, as well as a Maori All Blacks team which will need to improve dramatically on its recent poor form. But Ireland went beyond hope to offering confidence with their historic 40-29 triumph in Chicago and their gutsy 9-21 loss in Dublin. Only the sheer brilliance of Beauden Barrett and a magnificent defence saved the All Blacks’ bacon on Irish soil last Sunday when Ireland comprehensively won the battle for the ball and retained it for long periods. Having scored one himself and helping set up Malakai Fekitoa’s two tries, Barrett put his stamp on this test as easily the All Blacks star performer.
He also denied Ireland what seemed like a certain try with his ball-and-all tackle on rampaging flanker Sean O’Brien. It was a game that also confirmed Fekitoa’s growing confidence following another two-try effort against Italy in Rome despite being sinbinned for a careless tackle on Simon Zebo. Tough Sam Cane suffered a similar fate following his head clash that ko’d Robbie Henshaw. Although it wasn’t deliberate, the loss of Henshaw and fellow fiveeighth Johnny Sexton was a crushing blow to Irish hopes after both had starred in the Chicago win along with halfback Conor Murray. Hence it was left to the Irish forwards to carry the attack to New Zealand, with prop Tadhg Furlong a powerhouse and flankers Sean O’Brien and Josh van der Flier absolutely brilliant. With the penalty count going 14-4 against them, the
All Blacks do have off side and high tackle discipline issues which need to be addressed. But once again they showed they have tremendous character. Furthermore with Aaron Smith only a shadow of the classy player who performed so well at home, PJ Perenara is currently the team’s best halfback both on attack and defence. As such, he should start in next Sunday’s final test against France. Of the newcomers, none have impressed more than Anton Lienert-Brown who made 15 tackles in the Dublin test and whose slick passes have set up so many tries throughout the season. Liam Squire is another success story with his strong running and bone-crunching tackles and Beauden Barrett’s not so little brother, Scott, has made a fine debut at lock. Taken on tour as an apprentice, third brother Brodie should benefit from the experience when he plays

with Beauden for the Super Rugby champion Hurricanes next year. Fears expressed in this column about the Kiwis lack of structure were once more realised with their pathetic 34-8 Four Nations rugby league final loss to the Kangaroos. I share Richie Barnett’s concern about the coaching staff and agree with his claim that this was the poorest performance from a Kiwis side in a Four Nations series. At their best, the forwards bash and barge okay but too often die with the ball and seem devoid of practised moves. Ditto the backs who too often drift sideways at half pace instead of accelerating straight onto the ball, committing tacklers and putting teammates through gaps. What a sad slump form their glorious 2014 Four Nations triumph! Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
