Whodunnit?
Damage done! Cr Paul Young who is contesting the Council elections is shocked to find that 11 of the 80 billboards were damaged just two days after they were put up. And while he concedes that three of the billboards may have been damaged due to bad weather, he is certain that the rest have been deliberately damaged by miscreants. He says it cost him a lot of money to put new ones up but is determined that this is not going to stop him campaigning even harder. Photo supplied

ever has there been such a huge turnout for National Party leader Simon Bridges in Howick. Parking was at a premium as were seats at the SuperBlues meeting at the Howick Bowling Club where local MP Simeon Brown introduced Bridges as “NZ’s next prime minister”. Rapturous applause welcomed the opposition leader. This time Bridges seems more confident and self-assured as he spoke of the controversial petrol tax and called Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern “fleecer-in-chief”. He had everyone’s attention as he spoke of the Government putting a stop to all roading projects “and not started anything new”. “Right now they have stopped the East-West project and yet they have increased fuel taxes by 12c. Sadly they are not even spending our tax money. So where is it going?” Bridges asked. “They don’t know

I am focussed on the future and it’s great that we have a strong voice in Botany.” Bridges reveals that the last month or two has been a real mood-changer and as the gloss is wearing off, people are getting tired of the present Government. “Yes, I definitely feel very confident and positive now,” said Bridges.

There was a big coterie of National Party supporters waiting to receive him at Botany Town Centre. In between a maze of handshakes and reaching out to party workers, shop owners and locals, he grabbed a quick cuppa with the Times. Talking about the Botany electorate and the huge interest in terms of a safe National seat that is up for grabs next year, he said that the potential candidates will be filtered down to five or less. With high profile names like Air New Zealand chief Christopher Luxor’s name popping up, he reasoned, “With Auckland having a third of our population, there are only a couple of

Our business confidence is at an all time low. “The two biggest issues that have taken a hit is our economy and health sector. “The DHB (District Health Board) deficits are at an all time low. This is a first in my lifetime that elective surgeries have gone down in numbers. Sadly, the Government got rid of all performance targets and no one is driving results or is accountable. “Unfortunately $300 million didn’t go to the health sector but to Shane Jones and Winston Peters,” he said. “There is an increase of 15,500 people on dole.” Later in the day after the National Party leader had visited GMP Pharmaceuticals,

Driver: I’m no hero ■■By Nick Krause
A
rthur Moore is 82, resilient and full of hope. The Pakuranga resident has bowel cancer and, for five weeks, took two buses every week day to Auckland Hospital for radiotherapy treatment. It was on one of those travel days into the city in June that he stumbled while trying to catch his bus, the city-bound Howick & Eastern 70x. It was a nasty fall and one which landed him in hospital for five days with a brain bleed. Despite the set-back, Arthur remains upbeat and is eternally grateful to the bus driver that day, and a couple of passengers who came to his rescue. After getting him aboard the bus and patching him up, the bus driver made a diversion and dropped Arthur at Auckland hospital. Driver Sandeep Singh, 32, of Pakuranga, was at the wheel negotiating morning rush-hour and witnessed Arthur’s fall. “It was just a normal morning and I was travelling on Pakuranga Road in heavy traffic. As I moved off, I saw an old guy, in my left side mirror, lose his balance and fall down,” said Sandeep. “I parked and just went to him.” Two other passengers on the bus helped – a woman with bandages and a man who helped get Arthur on the bus. “There was a big cut on his eye socket and a lot of blood coming out. I decided I couldn’t leave him.
Above, left, Arthur Moore at Stockade Hill on Anzac Day; right, Howick & Eastern Buses driver Sandeep Singh said he did what any person would have done. Times photo Wayne Martin / supplied
He told me he was on blood-thinning medication,” Sandeep said. “I offered to call him an ambulance but he said he was okay.” Getting Arthur to the hospital required some resourcefulness on Sandeep’s part given the hospital is not on his route. “The 72x goes down the motorway to Symonds Street, not Khyber Pass. I figured I could take Khyber Pass and still manage my first stop,” Sandeep said. He radioed Howick & Eastern Buses and got the go-ahead to change course. And he managed to make all his stops in time too. Arthur’s partner Sue Bentley was moved by Sandeep’s act of kindness. Arthur took two buses, one from Pakuranga Road to Panmure and then a second bus from Panmure to
the hospital. “While running to catch the bus at Pakuranga Road he fell over, hitting his head and hurting himself quite badly, he still got on the bus worrying he would miss his radiotherapy appointment,” Sue said. “Not only did the driver of this bus help look after him but instead of taking the direct route (which was his schedule) to Britomart, he made a detour and dropped him off at Auckland hospital. This was extremely kind especially as when Arthur arrived at hospital they found he had a bleed to the brain.” Arthur is full of praise too. “When I fell over behind the bus, Sandeep could have driven on, however he and a passenger helped me to my feet and got me on the bus. “If he is not a hero, he went well

beyond his duty to help me and I am very grateful.” “I would like to thank all these people who helped me, especially Sandeep.” Troy O’Dea, operations manager at Howick & Eastern Buses, spoke of the “excellent service and community-minded assistance” many of its drivers have delivered over the years. “We are excited and grateful that Sandeep has been acknowledged for his actions, we would also like to acknowledge the assistance and care given by the other passengers on board the bus,all of whom agreed to allow Sandeep to disrupt their journey and go off route directly to Auckland Hospital,” said Troy. “In a world where so many people are focused on a small screen it is
refreshing and heart-warming to see a group of strangers band together during a time of need for one person.” Sandeep, who has worked for the company for four months, said he did what any person would have done. “Hero? No. I just did what other people should do. I’m just a citizen who just wanted to help.” Meanwhile Arthur, who took buses for his appointments as there was no parking at the hospital, has an appointment today which he hopes is positive. He’s over the brain bleed and is bracing himself for further news of how his radiotherapy treatment has gone. “If any other people in the district would like to contribute to a bottle of whiskey for me, I’d be grateful.”

she is bossed around by family and is fortunate to have them around to help at all times. Till recently she was actively involved with the Catholic Women’s League church group raising money, sending food packets to the islands and catering for funerals. Beth says her then future husband Roy bought the house (which sits behind her current home) when they were engaged. “The Star of the Sea Catholic
Church was being built at that time and when he came home from World War I, he bought the property next to the church. He organised to buy a section before he asked for my hand in marriage,” she recalls. “He saw me crossing the road and fell in love with me. I used to work at Rishworth, the haberdashery shop on Picton Street and he came there on the pretext of buying a baby dress for his niece. It was just an excuse to see me,” she smiles. Beth recalls that in those days no one had any money and all men helped each other to build a house. “Everyone was poor in Howick. Our house was the first to be built on the street,” she says. “My birthday is historically in Howick. “It’s wonderful that my family has grown up in Howick and my great grandmother Margaret Smyth lived in Howick all her life.” Her daughter Jan says that after the high tea with family and friends they continued the party at Howick Club. “Then mum came home and we stayed up till 3am reading all her beautiful cards. She has been inundated with visitors since.” Happy Birthday Beth!
PEST FREE
Rat expert visits restoration spot ■ BY JIM BIRCHALL It’s not often a world-renowned expert in pest management, specialising in rats, visits a local school. That’s exactly what happened last week when New York-based urban rodentologist Dr Bobby Corrigan took a day out from presenting duties at the annual conference for The Pest Management Association of New Zealand, and visited the Otara Creek Restoration project in Botany South. Corrigan is considered the authority in rodent control and says more effective extermination methods are rapidly evolving. Rats can become immune to conventional poisons so to avoid a ‘ratsputin’ situation he favours the use of non-toxic baits to alleviate damage to the environment and the use of dry ice to release lethal CO2 gas. The project is an initiative run in conjunction with Pest Free Howick with assistance from students from Sancta Maria. Thanks
to funding from the Howick Local Board, and co-ordinated by Lorelle Stranaghan and Niklas Erikson, a bio security expert from Auckland Council. Left in neglect after the construction of Te Irirangi Drive and other urban developments over the past 20 years, noxious plants such as woolly nightshade along with vermin became entrenched. Since the programme’s inception in 2015, there has been a significant reduction of pests by way of trapping and the removal of pest-friendly invasive plant species. The region’s ancient flora is on the way to being revived after the planting of 12,000 trees, comprising a mix of native’s such as manuka and kanuka. The Times was invited to Sancta Maria College to get a first-hand look at developments and progress in the neglected creek area, straddled between Ti Irirangi Drive and Chapel Road. Unfortunately for Dr Corrigan, no local examples of Rat-
tus Norvegicus, also known as the Norway rat, were to be seen, highlighting the excellent work done thus far. In future, Eriksen is hoping to share the trapping duties with keen (and brave) students from the school, and is encouraging them to become au fait with catch IT data. There is an upcoming opportunity for locals to get involved in Pest Free Howick’s “Pestival’. Held on Wednesday September 18 at Ormiston Junior College from 7.30pm, the evening is a chance to get your own free rat trap to take home and use for the duration of the project. A demonstration of the how to use the trap and advice on placing traps and pest disposal is also available. ➤ Networking is from 7pm with tea and coffee on hand. For further information about the event or the wider initiative email pestfreehowick@ aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

ou would think it was the Queen of England coming out to lunch, quips Evelyn Elizabeth Robertson with a twinkle in her eyes. Beth, as she is known to her family, has turned 90 and is a bit amused with her daughter Jan Botherway who is running around to organise a high tea birthday celebration for more than 110 people at Our Lady Star of the Sea School. Five generations of Beth’s family have attended the school which was then at a different location at Granger Rd, Cockle Bay. “Wonder what my children are going to do for my 100th birthday? They may have to go through a lot more trouble to make it grander,” she says.. So what is she going to wear at the birthday party? “A garter and a smile,” she jokes. Her daughter promptly brings out a well-cut jacket and skirt that the birthday girl with 22 grandchildren and 16 great grand-children is going to wear on the big day. How did Father’s Day start?
The history of Father’s Day, according to the website kwifamilies.co.nz, dates back to the early 1900s and was partly inspired by the unofficial Mother’s Day services which began in 1908. These Mother’s Day services prompted many people to arrange similar services to recognise fathers. While many services were arranged in the next couple of years, the most widely noted was organised in Washington, by Mrs Sonora Dodd. Mrs Dodd wanted to pay tribute to her late father, William Smart, who became a single parent when her mother died in childbirth. William Smart raised six children on his own, which was an unusual feat at that time. Originally Mrs Dodd wanted to hold the memorial service on the anniversary of her father’s death, June 5th 1910, however this did not leave organisers enough time to prepare a service.
Instead the service was arranged to be held on the June 19, and this has became known as the first Father’s Day. While services continued every year, it was not until 1924 that President Coolidge recommended Father’s Day as a national holiday. It took 48 years from that recommendation, before Father’s Day was officially recognised by President Nixon in 1972.

Father’s Day in New Zealand comes on the first Sunday of September, which differs from the June date of Father’s Day in many other countries. This year it falls on Sunday September 1 and next year will be celebrated on Sunday September 6. Father’s Day is not a public holiday, but it is widely observed by much of New Zealand’s population. Father’s Day is traditionally a special time to recognise the unique and important role fathers fill in society, families, and individual lives. There’s not really much distinctive about Father’s Day in New Zealand compared to other countries. It’s a day to spend time with Dad, shout him a meal, and give him a card or gift. Father’s Day was first celebrated in the US in the early 20th Century. Over the decades it grew in popularity across the country and was exported across the world. Then as now, the holiday provided a special opportunity to honour fathers, while also providing a lucrative new

What day is Father’s Day in New Zealand?
Most countries follow the United States tradition and celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June however New Zealand and Australia celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September. Other cultures around the world coincide Father’s Day with other celebrations in their community. In Germany it is celebrated on Ascension Day (40 days after Easter), in the Roman Catholic tradition it is St Josephs Day (March 19), and in Thailand it is the king’s birthday (December 5) JH15306

As a result of vehicle offending, victims have had to replace cars and possessions, cancel bank cards and driver licences, repair damaged windows and ignitions and make police reports and insurance claims. “Victims of vehicle crime experience significant cost and inconvenience so we want to prevent this crime being from committed or enabled through poor security,” Barry said. “Police are working hard to prevent victimisation and we have increased patrols in crime locations and are following leads to apprehend offenders who have committed offences. However we need the community’s help to keep them safe.” Tradies such as builders and electricians need to utilise secure parking or have a qual-
ity car alarm fitted, he said. “It is also essential that tradies lock their vehicles securely when working on jobs or sites as their vehicles are a magnet for offenders,” said Barry. Police are asking the public to be vigilant and take the time to increase security at their property and keep a lookout for any suspicious activity. “If someone sees someone behaving suspiciously they should phone 111 immediately.” ➤➤Information regarding vehicle related offending or people receiving or offering to sell stolen property should be reported to their local Police Station. This is aggravated by the fact that offenders will often return to areas they know to be “easy targets” to re-offend.

spate of car break-ins in Howick has brought a rebuke from police about people leaving valuables in their cars. Chris Barry, Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager told the Times. Police are disappointed and concerned that “many people in the community” are not taking responsibility for vehicle crime prevention. “Many of the crimes that are being reported could be avoided if people removed valuables and locked their cars securely,” he said. “When a thief breaks into a vehicle and steals something valuable it creates incentive for them to return and keep offending in the area. “We have seen some signifi-

old Sinead Latimer present a petition to Parliament on August 21 calling for the House of Representatives to look at providing counsellors at all New Zealand primary schools. Sinead and her mother Rochelle Latimer first met Ross at the Teen Suicide Awareness March attended by thousands of people in Wellington earlier this year. They talked to him about mental health services in New Zealand and he suggested Sinead start a petition calling for change in the sector. Her petition was signed by 1286 people and has been referred to Parliament’s Education and Workforce Committee for consideration. Ross says as someone who has experienced his own mental health challenges, he was more than happy to support Sinead’s petition. He says he hopes her efforts will lead to young people in East Auckland who are struggling getting the appropriate support. “We need to get help to people early, when they’re at primary school, or in the community, or at their doctor’s surgery.
Teenager Sinead Latimer, left, was supported by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross when she presented a petition to Parliament calling for counsellors to be provided to all primary schools. Photo supplied
“If we help people early on, you end up saving people’s lives and ensuring better mental wellbeing and better livelihoods for them. I think it is money really well spent.” Sinead says she has suffered from depression for three years and was bullied at school. She now has access to a counsellor at her secondary school but
wishes one was available when she was at primary school. She says she was motivated to start her petition when one of her friends died suddenly last year at age 15. “Because I experienced it [depression] and I need the help, I know it would have benefitted me and so many of my peers, and even people who went to other schools. “Just having a door to knock on helps so much. It’s like talking to your friend but they [the counsellor] can give you strategies to help you through it.” Ross says the Government allocated $1.9 billion in new funding for mental health services as part of Budget 2019. He says more money needs to be invested in primary mental health care, which enables people to obtain professional help early in the process. NZ Association of Counsellors president Bev Weber says guidance counsellors in primary and intermediate schools are “long overdue”. “We hope Sinead’s petition generates the awareness and support it needs.”

Another victory for people power G
reat things are possible when concerned residents band together to take action on behalf of their local community. We saw that recently when a group of Northpark residents I’m supporting obtained a commitment from the Howick Local Board to fund the installation of a light at Tarnica Park in an effort to make it safer at night. And we saw it again last week when, after months of work by a group of Cockle Bay residents, a resource consent for a proposed large-scale apartment block on the corner of Sandspit Road and Reydon Place was refused. The developers wanted to build a complex with more than 70 apartments that would have been wildly out of place in a quiet seaside community like Cockle Bay. That suburb was once part of the council heritage zone that protects residents from developments out of line with the community’s needs and expectations. Putting more than 70 apartments in that location

would have caused a range of problems. Sandspit Road is a busy thoroughfare with four schools in close proximity and a large amount of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Local opposition to this proposed development was loud and effective. Numerous locals and the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association made it clear from the start this proposed apartment building was not welcome in their neighbourhood. As the local MP for Botany, I shared their concerns. According to the council, all
The Thursdays @ Seven concert on September 5 will feature the inaugural performance of an exciting new initiative led by Ensemble East under local musician Yid-Ee Goh and others. These young people meet every Saturday morning to rehearse and learn about ensemble techniques and the joy of playing stringed instruments. In the performance the young players will be sitting with, and supported by, more experienced players to gain important ensemble experience. The repertoire for the concert includes music by Telemann, Vivaldi and Handel. ➤ All Saints Howick, Thursday 5 September 7-8pm. Admission by donation.

16 submissions received on the resource consent application were opposed to it. Submitters raised issues related to potential problems including traffic, stormwater and wastewater, privacy and construction and contamination effects. And an online petition against the development was signed by more than 2100 people, so clearly there was widespread community opposition to this project. We recognise that Auckland has a housing crisis and increasing density is one way to address this issue. But that doesn’t mean local residents aren’t right to stand up and make their voices heard when a development that would totally change the character of their community is proposed. People power can achieve great things and it should be celebrated when it does. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

Measles spreads The ongoing spread of the highly contagious disease measles, which has affected at least four local schools in recent weeks, appears to have hit NZ Post in Highbrook. A message on their 0800 number says their team is running at reduced capacity due to measles. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service told the Times: “With the volume of measles cases now in Auckland, we only find out about cases in schools or early childhood education centres, or if they have travelled out of Auckland. So we cannot confirm cases in workplaces.”

op Auckland landmarks will this week shine bright for Daffodil Day with the Vector Lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower and Eden Park supporting the Cancer Society. Vector Lights will turn the Auckland Harbour Bridge yellow to support Daffodil Day, symbolising hope for one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. The static show will run from Wednesday August 28 to Friday August 30, 6pm to midnight. The Sky Tower will also be lit to celebrate Daffodil Day, from August 28 to 30 to become New Zealand’s largest daffodil, with a green stem and a bright yellow top. The new external signs at the SkyCity Auckland precinct will also be lit yellow for the first time in recognition. New Zealand’s national stadium Eden Park will illuminate yellow and green in support of the important cause for a week from 26-30 August. As the Cancer Society’s biggest annual appeal, Daffodil Day donations are vital to providing a wide range of supportive care services for people with cancer and their loved ones all around the country. The Cancer Society is asking people to dig deep to help Kiwis facing cancer when they donate on Daffodil Day, Friday 30 August. “We really appreciate the support of Auckland Council and Vector for selecting the Cancer Society and lighting this iconic landmark for Daffodil Day,” says Andrew Young, Cancer Society Auckland Northland CEO. “We also want to thank the teams at Sky City and Eden Park for supporting this important cause, with cancer affecting one in three New Zealanders.” “Like the bright lights on these landmarks, Daffodil Day donations will help make a brighter future for those living with cancer and for cancer prevention. Your generosity makes it possible for the Cancer Society to be a strong and independent voice for change to improve cancer outcomes in New Zealand,” says Mr Young. Every day the Cancer Society helps thousands of New Zealanders through the emotional, physical and practical challenges a cancer diagnosis brings. In the last year alone, the Cancer Society took more than 7000 calls to its 0800 CANCER information line, had more than 105,000 meetings, calls or messages with Kiwis dealing with cancer, provided nearly 48,000 nights of accommodation near a hospital and drove almost 105,000 kilometres to help people to and from treatment. Vector’s GM public policy & regulatory counsel Mark Toner says, “So many New Zealanders are affected by cancer, so we are pleased to be able to

support such an important cause, and to recognise the important and vital work of the Cancer Society.” Vector Lights is part of a smart energy partnership between Vector and Auckland Council, in collaboration with the NZ Transport Agency. Auckland Council’s commercial development manager Jo Hartley says, “We are proud to support Daffodil Day with a Vector Lights display in recognition of the outstanding work that the Cancer Society does to create a future with less cancer for all New Zealanders.” Eden Park chief executive officer Nick Sautner says the 116 year-old venue is committed to supporting the local and wider community and making a positive impact on our population. “We’re pleased the Park can help shine a light on the great work the Cancer Society does in our country of bringing awareness to this worthy cause,” says Sautner Brad Burnett, general manager SkyCity Hotels and Sky Tower, says, “For the second year running, SkyCity are honoured to light the Sky Tower as a daffodil and continue to support the Cancer Society, who provide much needed assistance and on-going research in the battle to stop cancer. Donations can be made at www.daffodilday.org.nz, at any ANZ branch during August or during the street appeal on Friday August 30.

Utmost in quality, service and on-time delivery Kitchen manufacturer Stewart Scott Cabinetry (SSC) was started in 1979 by Stewart Scott. Stewart had a vision to become one of New Zealand’s most respected kitchen cabinetry companies, and judging by the thousands of satisfied customers, they are well on their way. Their business has stood the test of time, and outlasted many fly-bynight operators. The business is now under the direction of his daughter Heather Wood, son Brian Scott, and helmed by engaging branch manager (and granddaughter) Rebecca Banks. “Grandad was always thought of as a bit of an entrepreneur” says Rebecca, “he was a pioneer in introducing the concept of face lifting, and back in the day he developed a brand of lovely flora and fauna inspired carved timber veneer doors he called `Aladdin doors’. The doors were considered a fashionable trend in the process of revamping old painted timber face frame kitchen’s from the 60’s into the groovy 70’s style. We now look at these and consider them gorgeous and charming with their vintage retro look!”
Above: left, the friendly staff at Stewart Scott Cabinetry in East Tamaki; right, one of their kitchen designs.
Stewart also had an eye for innovation, and a finger on the pulse of the industry. He would spend time overseas at trade shows looking into new and clever products, smarter production methods, and take inspiration from ideas that he would later introduce and integrate into New Zealand. Staying on-trend is uberimportant in the kitchen design game. SSC staff regularly continue Stewart’s journeys of discovery off-shore to keep them abreast of the latest advancements, and to acuminate their product knowledge.
Being a family business, you deal directly with the owners who are extremely passionate about who they are, and what they do. Many staff members have been with the company for extended periods and have become ‘part of the SSC family’. This integrity means their customers receive the utmost in quality, service and on-time delivery. Their longevity proves that keeping to these principles guarantees happy customers and staff! Trio on ‘We know Howick’ ticket T
hree independent candidates are to unite under the ticket ‘We Know Howick’ when they stand for the Howick Local Board in the upcoming local elections. Newcomer Bo Burns, who organises Howick’s annual Santa Parade, has joined seasoned local board members Adele White and John Spiller to stand for the Howick subdivision in the Howick Ward in the 2019 Local Government elections. The team’s campaign, ‘We Know Howick’ highlights innovative ideas for the board and encourages more people – especially youth – to vote. “Our hashtag #weknowhowick was carefully chosen as it resonated with each of us. Growing up, living, working and socialising here over a long time and having spoken freely and frankly with the people of Howick – we know the issues that matter most to locals,” they said in a press release. All born, bred and educated locally, Spiller, Burns and White share a mutual vision for Howick where the community is at the forefront of Auckland Council’s service provision and projects.
organising tournaments and coaching for netball, mentoring school groups, APPA board member and she is the current organiser of the much-loved Howick Santa Parade. Bo says she has the energy, vision, and organisational skills to action change where she can. As a logical thinker she will listen and dedicate time to residents’ issues. She says she will strive to keep Howick’s historic beauty and culture alive while introducing fresh innovative concepts to its community.

The provision of outstanding recreational and sporting facilities is important to John. On the local board John led the sports portfolio team that delivered the artificial sports fields at William Green Domain, improved drainage and irrigation systems for Lloyd Elsmore Park and fast tracked the development of Barry Curtis Park sports fields. He strongly believes that quality parks and walkways are essential for community health and wellbeing. John is passionate about the environment and supports pest control programmes, has been personally involved in many local tree plantings and is a long-time supporter of ongoing development of the popular Mangemangeroa reserve.
Adele White
Adele has gained huge respect from the people of Howick through her successful years in local govern-
ment, and from working in the community as a former police officer for 33 years. She is a strong advocate for the preservation of Howick’s character and history whilst ensuring the area is well-resourced with innovative facilities for all ages and realistic transport improvements. On the local board Adele has led decision making around many local community initiatives including the redevelopment of the Uxbridge Arts Centre and, most recently, the development of the Howick Village Centre Plan. She says she will continue to actively speak out around significant Howick Ward projects whilst being
vigilant to, and openly questioning council spending and service provision. As a health educator, celebrant and current board member, Adele is known for her passion, professionalism, leadership skills and proven ability to interact with all members of the community and will bring this to a new board.

1st XI wins Auckland Premiership again The Saint Kentigern Boys football 1st XI has won the Auckland Premiership title back to back with a game still in hand. St Kents on Saturday beat Mount Albert Grammar 2-1 which means it has won 11 out of 13 games with one draw - scoring 43 goals. DECISION MAKING: WHO DECIDES WHEN YOU NO LONGER CAN? We spend the majority of our adult lives in charge of our own activities, and often we have responsibilities for other people, companies or trusts. What happens if you lose mental capacity (temporarily or permanently), and are no longer able to manage your own affairs? People of all ages should consider reviewing their affairs and putting in place a plan for somebody else to be able to handle their affairs. So, what sort of plan can you come up with? The key thing to remember is that a plan is best made before you lose mental capacity. If you lose mental capacity without having a plan in place it is likely your family will need to involve the courts to be able to assist you.

REAL ESTATE
REINZ welcomes the new guidelines
A year-on-year drop in the number of listings in Auckland hasn’t been seen for a while.
The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the new guidelines which have been released by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) as being much clearer and simpler for the industry to follow. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “When the guidelines were initially released there was a lack of consistency and limited industry consultation in the development of the guidelines. However, today’s (August 19) guidelines are much clearer as they specify the type of information that should and should not be collected at various stages of the tenant selection process. We also welcome the collaborative approach the Commission has taken over the last few months. “In the Commission’s view, collecting certain information becomes more justifiable as the process progresses and this is certainly something the industry agrees with.” One concern initially raised by the industry was around being able to ask whether the applicant was over 18, however, the new guidelines clearly state this is something potential tenants can be asked from the outset in order to ensure landlords and property managers are complying with the requirements under the Residential Tenancies Act. “We’re delighted that the OPC has cleared up the issue around proof of age as this was a big concern to a number of our members when the guidelines initially came out, so we are really pleased the Commissioner has taken our feedback on board,” says Norwell. “Another area which has been clarified is around credit checks. The new guidelines outline that credit checks should only be carried out on preferred applicants. While this might slow the process down slightly if the preferred candidates credit checks are not satisfactory, the industry concedes that it is prudent to check preferred candidates rather than all candidates. “We also welcome clarity on issues such as income verification/employment, smoking, expenses, and will be working with our members to communicate these updated standards in a timely manner. “We absolutely agree with the Commission’s list of questions that should not be asked at any stage of the tenancy application including nationality, ethnicity, physical/mental disability, gender, sexual orientation etc. These have no place in discussions about finding a tenant and could only be used to discriminate. We will also be reminding our members of their obligations under the Human Rights Act.”

OUR HOMES TODAY
Housing stock tightens T
he total number of listings across New Zealand remains very low — even allowing for winter — and even Auckland is now showing early signs of a tightening in available stock. This low starting point, combined with the further growth in property values could mean that the spring uplift in the stock of total listings is a bit stronger than normal. However, any increase is
unlikely to be massive, given that low interest rates and unemployment mean almost no forced pressure on anybody to sell, said CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson. “As winter starts to (hopefully) ease a little, now is about the time of the year when talk in the property market turns to the health of listings and what sort of pick up is likely as we get into spring,” he said.
“After all, listings activity plays a key role in the number of actual sales that can be achieved. So what sort of base will the looming upturn for listings be starting from?” In Auckland, although listings are still quite a bit higher than they were at this time of year back in 2015 and 2016, they are at least a fraction lower than they were this time in 2018. A year-on-year drop in the number of listings in
Auckland hasn’t been seen for a while, but this is what you’d expect should be happening – i.e. with confidence subdued and property values gently declining, it makes sense that some vendors who may have just been testing the market would delist their properties, and that the normal flow of sales (albeit low) would outweigh any new listings and also help to gradually eat into the existing stock of listings.

Elections
Mayoral heavyweights to show for local forum The two heavyweight favourites in the Auckland Mayoral contest will be in Botany next month. Mayoral frontrunners Phil Goff and John Tamihere will be hosted at the LifeGrowth Community Trust’s Meet the Auckland Mayoral Candidates Event on September 24. The candidates will be debating their vision and plans for Auckland and Aucklanders. Lloyd Wong the facilitator for the forum, says, “Both Goff and Tamihere are real politicians, clearly unafraid of a political scrap, who have honed their skills in central government and continuing to make a difference in Auckland local government affairs,” said Wong.
“Everyone should come along to the Botany event, not only to listen to this intriguing heavyweight contest but to engage these well-known politicians with meaningful questions. “One of these two candidates will surely be the next Auckland Mayor so submit your questions to us. Who will you pick?” ➤➤Send you questions to tooffice@ ecw.org.nz. ➤➤East Auckland Meet the Auckland Mayoral Candidates Event Tuesday September 24 @ 7.30pm East City Wesleyan Church Centre 219 Burswood Drive (off Ti Rakau Dr), Botany.
ne of the items in the model display at the East City Wesleyan Father’s Day display on Sunday is a 5 inch (12.7cm) scale Heisler logging locomotive. It was made over a period of 20 years by Murray Lane, a Howick resident who is one of New Zealand’s top model engineers. Lane said there were six small Heisler locomotives imported into New Zealand between 1902 and 1924 which were used by a number of logging companies around the country, several of which have been preserved. “These have a two cylinder vee engine mounted under the boiler and drive an axle on each bogie by a central shaft drive via a gearbox,’ said Lane. “The other axle is driven by coupling rods and the special suspension keeps all the wheels on the rails irrespective of the track condition. “Unlike other makes of geared engines, the transmission gearboxes were fully sealed and as a result they were often used in open cast mines. “This engine started off as a model of one of these but quickly grew into a larger engine based on the 90 ton Heisler West Coast Special, 10 of which were built between 1927 and 1939.” The model has been further

developed from a 2 cylinder to a 4 cylinder, which is effectively two 2 cylinder engines mounted back to back. Heisler did design a 4 cylinder engine but it was never built so the model is the only one of its kind ever made. This engine has been designed from photographs and scratch built by Lane. “The engine unit and basic layout were drawn using an old fashioned drawing board in the days before CAD drawing systems became available. “The other 100 odd small drawings of individual parts were drawn free hand. The total weight with the driver is around 200kg and with a 2 to 1 reduction through the gear boxes and with the small 3 ½ inch diameter wheels it has tremendous torque, it has pulled 1½ tons up a 1 in 100 grade for 500

metres with the boiler boiling 3 pints of water a minute,” said Lane. “The engine runs like a sewing machine up to 3000 revs per minute. Only the engine unit is displayed here but when coupled to the tenders with extra three bogies the unit is 2.58 metres long. The engine has now been retired and a display case is being made and it will be displayed in a private steam museum.” Organiser of the creative Father’s Day community event Rev Dr Richard Waugh says, “Murray Lane’s locomotive will be a centre piece of the hobby displays on the day. He is a master craftsman and the Father’s Day event will be showcasing a range of men’s talents, from cars and motorcycles to stamp collections and locally written books. Everyone is welcome.”

Community Hair studio fighting for patrollers sustainability, zero waste wanted H Safety
Howick Pakuranga community patrol is celebrating 25 years of helping to keep the local community safe. You may have seen their marked patrol cars in your street, checking on properties and keeping their eyes peeled for suspicious behaviour. Over the last quarter century, thanks to a memorandum of understanding with police, the core role of acting as a deterrent by serving as “eyes and ears for the police” has expanded to include liaison with Auckland Council with a focus on dealing with graffiti and refuse dumping. Historically, regular patrols have reduced the incidence of property crime. At the start of their shift, patrollers are directed to pay particular attention to current areas of concern. During the patrol, they are able to contact the District Command Centre to report problems and can be instructed to attend an incident to conduct surveillance or provide assistance. The patrol is also often called on to assist with traffic control for community events such as Howick’s Midnight Madness and the Santa Parade. It is also involved in preventative initiatives such as Safer Plates, which involves replacing number plate screws with special security screws to prevent theft and use of a vehicle in crimes such as a bank robberies or drive-offs from petrol stations. There is an ongoing training programme which provides assurance to first responders that patrollers are trained and capable of dealing with incidents and emergencies. ➤➤If you or someone you know are interested in becoming a patroller, get in touch with secretary Peter Hargreaves at peter.hargreaves83@gmail.com or phone 021 971415.

Elderly woman injured at high school An elderly woman sustained serious injuries from a fall on a grass bank at Howick College on Saturday. The woman was attending Howick College to see her grandson play in an under-15 rugby semi-final against Pukekohe High School. After slipping down the grass bank, spectators and students came to her aid and an ambulance was called. The woman was transported to Middlemore Hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken femur. In a second incident a man of advanced age also slipped on bank and the Times was informed he had suffered a concussion. A first responder who attended the incident told the Times that the injuries from slipping on the bank were not the first he had been called to. Deputy principal Dr Paul Bennett told the Times: “We are sorry to hear about (the woman’s) injuries sustained at the weekend and we are grateful to the medical staff, parents and students who responded. “Recently, we have invested heavily in drainage for the fields and we try to ensure all visitors use the steps and gravel pathway. However, like all accidents, we will review this incident and consider if anything can be done to reduce the A grandmother suffered serious injuries after a fall on the hill while attending a rugby risk of this kind of accident re-occurring.” match.

England flex muscles
I
t’s a funny old world when Six Nations champions Wales have broken New Zealand’s 509-week status as the world’s top rugby nation and England, fifth in last year’s Six Nations, beat 2018 champions Ireland 57-15 at Twickenham. That doesn’t make good reading for those of us who recall the Irish beat the All Blacks twice in their last three clashes, having never previously beaten them. But then the All Blacks looked creaky this winter when beating Argentina 20-16, drawing with South Africa 16-16 and losing to Australia 47-26 before avenging that defeat with an emphatic 36-0 triumph. What made that latest win so satisfying was the impact shown by the five replacements with Nepo Laulala and Patrick Tuipolotu adding grunt to the forwards, Sonny Bill Williams straightening the backline and busy new wings George Bridge and Sevu Reece showing a hunger and brilliance that Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith had failed to produce. In fairness to the latter pair, their forwards didn’t give them a platform to perform in earlier games and Smith had lost speed following a hamstring tear. At a time when the All Blacks have so many candidates for

the midfield positions, I am surprised most writers and commentators favour the SBW/Jack Jack Goodhue pairing. While it was pleasing to see Williams perform well in the walloping of the Wallabies, injuries have plagued him since the 2016 Olympics. And while Goodhue has been solid, Anton Lienert-Brown’s ability to beat a man and pass in close quarters contact gives his wings more chances to score. None of the midfielders, however, are as prolific a try-scorer as powerful Ngani Laumape whose passing game requires more polish. But if you want to talk power,
England can rejoice in the return to form of No 8 Billy Vunipolo and centre Manu Tuilagi who were devastating against Ireland. With George Ford and Owen Farrell combining sweetly in the five-eighths, juggernaut Tuilagi, speedy fullback Elliot Daly and wings Johnny May and Joe Cokanasiga are getting quick ball to sharpen their attacking skills. In Farrell, George and Daly they are also blessed with three outstanding goal-kickers. Having failed to go beyond pool play in their own backyard at the last World Cup, England look much more dangerous this
year. Just as England have profited from expanding their game by trusting their backs, so too have South Africa who pose the first hurdle for the All Blacks to overcome in the first game of the World Cup in Japan next month. Certainly the Boks won’t under-estimate anyone, having lost their pool opener to brave Japan in 2015. But they bounced back to just lose 20-18 to New Zealand in a nerve-tingling semi-final. It is also worth recalling that having won two World Cup finals in 1991 and 1999, Australia were the last losing finalists, having lost to the All Blacks 34-17 in 2015. Their form has since been patchy and sometimes poor. However they can still be dangerous as the All Blacks learned before avenging this year’s 47-26 humiliation. Having also won two in 1995 and 2007, the Boks will also be eager to equal the All Blacks record of three in what looks likely to be the closest fought World Cup to date. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Black Cap Colin Munro has presented with a signed playing shirt to a proud sponsor of Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, Ray White Howick. Howick Pakuranga continued their dominance over the local club scene last season. The Marie Raos Ray White Premier side ‘The Alpacas’ were
crowned champions of both the two–day and T20 Auckland Cricket competitions. Munro played in the heartbreak that was the recent World Cup in the United Kingdom and has just returned from white ball duty with The Brampton Wolves in the Global T20 Canada (GT20) tournament. Installed as captain after the withdrawal of Darren Sammy,
his side made it to the semifinals before being tipped in a close game by eventual winners the Winnipeg Hawks. Munro set the tournament alight with a GT20 record 15 ball half century, which included six sixes. Canada is a developing market for T20 cricket and Munro rated the competition as strong “each team had five internationals, good players such as
Shahid Afridi and Yuvraj Singh”. Next up Munro is off to Sri Lanka with the Blackcaps T20 team for a three match series starting September 1. When asked if there was any chance of pulling on the Howick Pakuranga shirt this season, he intimated there was “a small chance, probably around December depending on what format (was being played)”.
Neighbourhood Watch: a black Give and Take Second Hand Party comedy charity
Alan Ayckbourn’s 75th play is another black comedy gem from this prolific playwright, who has a reliable knack of getting to the truth of whatever he chooses to write about in a most entertaining manner. This sharply social and relevant story opens with a thirty-something unmarried brother and sister having just moved into a “respectable” neighbourhood. As they prepare for their house-warming party, they spot a trespasser in their garden. Considering this could lead to a potential crime wave, they decide to form a Neighbourhood Watch group right away — to ward off the “drugs, violence and incest” from the rough housing estate down the road. However, at the group’s first meeting, a garden gnome comes sailing through their window, requiring immediate action. Other vivid characters include a gentle music teacher, a redundant engineer, a scarlet woman, an incorrigible gossip and the local bully. The Times has two double passes to Neighbourhood Watch to give away to readers. To enter go to www.times.co.nz/competitons by August 4. ➤➤Directed by Penel Keegan At: Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga On: September 7-28, (Wed to Sat) 8pm Matinees: Sunday, Sept 8 and 15, 2pm.
We all love garage sales! What if you could go to a giant garage sale and everything was free? Cession Community Trust has come up with an idea that, with a bit of “give and take”, puts a smile on everyone’s face. People are invited to bring their boxes and bags and come along to Cession Community’s Give & Take Second Hand Party which is happening this Saturday August 31 from 10am – 2pm at the Depot in Lloyd Elsmore Park. It’s a unique community event where no money changes hands, but the wider community benefits. We all have valuable items that have some life left in them that we never get around to selling online – but it’s taking up space. And we all have things that we need that we just can’t afford. What if there was a place you could bring what you no longer need and take what

Auckland take on Cantabs The Auckland NHL men’s and women’s teams will take on Canterbury at Lloyd Elsmore Park this weekend. “Come along and support our NHL teams in the annual Canterbury Exchange where our teams play for the Tony Palmer Memorial trophy,” said Auckland Hockey general manager James Sutherland. “These are capped matches for players as they build up for the last edition of the NHL starting in Tauranga on Saturday 14 September. “Tony Palmer was the manager of the 1976 Gold Medal winning NZ Men’s Hockey Team and an Auckland administrator from the 1970s. In the Striking Gold book both Canterbury and Auckland players speak fondly of a well liked and popular manager and administrator.“ The exchange and rivalry between Auckland and Canterbury teams that was strong throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was reinstituted last year with Canterbury hosting Auckland NHL teams in Christchurch, with Canterbury taking the trophy over the four matches,” said Sutherland. “Let’s get behind our teams as we try to wrestle back the trophy from the Red and Blacks. Go the Blue and Whites!” The games for this weekend are: Saturday August 31 - Auckland Men vs Canterbury @ 2pm; Auckland Women vs Canterbury @ 4pm; Sunday September 1 - Auckland Men vs Canterbury @ 1pm; Auckland Women vs Canterbury @ 3pm.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
