tudents and teachers who have recently been in China where the Coronavirus has claimed more than 100 lives will not be allowed at school for two weeks. Some local schools have confirmed they will be enacting strict stand-down periods in line with Ministry of Education advice this week. The virus that causes respiratory difficulties originated in Wuhan China. Macleans principal Steven Hargreaves said in a update on the school’s website that they are monitoring the situation regarding coronavirus and responding as more information is provided to the. “The incubation period is currently considered to be 14 days,” said Hargreaves. “All students arriving from China are requested to remain off school for two weeks following their date of arrival into New Zealand. This is as per Ministry of Education advice issued yesterday (January 27).” The school will remain open as normal for all other students. “Any student who is unwell must not attend school and should seek medical advice through the normal channels,” Hargreaves said. “Students and families are encouraged to follow the basic principles to reduce the risk of infection, such as wash-

SFO files charges in National Party donations case The Serious Fraud Office filed criminal charges today against four people in relation to donations paid into a National Party electorate bank account. Last year police referred Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross’ complaint about National’s election donations to the Serious Fraud Office. Ross, who was kicked out of the National Party in 2018, lodged a complaint with police in 2018. A police statement last March said: “Police have

referred to the Serious Fraud Office a complaint received in October (2018) in relation to the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act. “The complaint has been referred to the SFO as they hold the appropriate mandate to look further into matters raised by the investigation to date.” In a statement from the National Party leader Simon Bridges, he says neither he nor the National Party has been charged following an investigation by the Serious Fraud

Office. “I have always maintained I had nothing to do with the donations. As I have always said, the allegations against both myself and the party were baseless and false,” said Bridges. “This was always just a vendetta by a disgruntled former MP.” “I have always been confident in the way the Party receives and declares donations,” said general manager Greg Hamilton.

“We are happy to put this matter behind us and will not be making any other comment.” The defendants are scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on February 25. The SFO will not make any further comment until any name suppression issues have been dealt with.

With hundreds of international students due to arrive to schools in my electorate of Pakuranga and other schools in the Counties Manukau DHB area over coming weeks, this is of significant concern to my community and I want an understanding of the preparations being made by the Counties Manukau DHB,” said Brown. “There needs to be serious precautionary measures taken and these measures need to be communicated to the public to ensure people’s safety. “Action is also needed to ensure that schools and those providing student accommodation are given the right advice and support. There needs to be clear information and procedures around international students, their host families and quarantine processes. “I look forward to meeting with Counties Manukau DHB representatives and understanding what action they are taking.” ➤➤For more information visit https://www.health. govt.nz/our-work/diseasesand-conditions/novelcoronavirus-china-2019ncov

Young fan meets sporting idols

■■BY FARIDA MASTER It was a big moment for Louise Boswell, manager Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau and her hard working team of volunteers who have been working on it for more than one and a half year. The opening of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) Pakuranga –Eastern Manukau Inc new satellite service at the Pohutukawa Coast, had MP Andrew Bayly cut the ribbon along with Janice Bain who will be looking after CAB in Beachlands and Maraetai. “This is another fine example of the community coming together to help one another. I want to acknowledge the persistence and tenacity of CAB volunteer Janice Bain and the CAB in general who have pursued the idea of opening a satellite service in Beachlands since Janice first came to see me seeking advice and support back in July 2018,” said Bayly, also thanking the Franklin Local Board for their support in making the library available. CAB will operate every alternate Friday from 1-3pm at the Beachlands Library and the Maraetai Library. “There is a lovely synergy as the Library also serves the community and it is nice to share the space with them,” said CABNZ Chief Executive officer Kerry Dalton who cut the cake at the event attended by Councillor Paul Young, Howick Local Board member Adele White, Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell, Deputy

local Pakuranga cricket fan was excited to meet his heroes on Sunday (26 January) when he joined Captains Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli for the pre-match coin toss on the pitch prior to the Blackcaps vs India match. Eight-year-old Sachetan Ippa, who attends Pakuranga Heights School and plays for Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, won the ANZ competition to be the Coin Toss Kid which involved joining the two team captains on the pitch before the match. Sachetan said, “I started playing cricket when I was about one so I have always loved cricket. “I felt so lucky to be chosen as a Coin Toss Kid and be able to meet my two favourite cricket players. I practice all the time because I want to be a Blackcap when I’m older.” ANZ Pakuranga branch manager Natalie Wang said Sachetan was one of 28 young cricketers selected to take part in the prematch ritual this cricket season. “Young Kiwi cricket players are often inspired by New Zealand’s professional players, so we wanted to give them an opportunity to meet their sporting heroes. We hope Sachetan and all the Coin Toss Kids winners have fun, enjoy the experience and are inspired to continue to play the game,” she

WHITE WRITES

‘The time is right’ Howick Local Board’s new chairperson Adele White has hit the ground running! White writes about her first month in the big chair of the Howick Local Board and what she hopes to achieve.

W

ithin hours of my election at the Board’s Inauguration ceremony on November 4 I was leading a Citizenship Ceremony for 317 new New Zealanders at Manukau’s Vodafone Centre. I feel proud and excited about my new role. Eighteen years in local government and 33 years as a Police Officer in the area I grew up in has prepared me well. Both these roles involved relationship-building, planning, troubleshooting and leadership – all of which are a huge part of being Local Board chairperson. My first day in the chair’s chair at the Howick Local Board office in Pakuranga was spent reading an influx of emails. There was a fleeting moment when I asked myself if I had made the right decision, but that quickly passed! Amid invitations to attend events and letters from residents following up on issues, were emails sending words of congratulations and encouragement. I must acknowledge the support I have received from the wider community and from our team of Local Board services staff

who have been welcoming, helpful and are super-efficient. Subsequent days on the job have included chairing board workshops, attending meetings with council staff and community groups, cultural celebrations, meeting with chairpersons from the other 20 Auckland local boards, and preparing for the three years ahead. It was great to welcome John Spiller to the role of deputy chair in December. We have a board of experienced local people who want the very best for their com-

munities. My plan is to lead a focussed, engaged and amicable board who carry out every aspect of their work with respect, timeliness and professionalism. In addition to championing a number of significant projects in progress throughout our ward, we are about to prepare a draft Local Board plan for the forthcoming term and look forward to gathering feedback from local residents. Work-life balance is important. I acknowledge that the frequent travel I enjoy may have to go on the back burner for a while! I will continue to enjoy the outdoors, the arts and the company of family and friends – and I am excited at the pending arrival of our first grandchild. Those who know me well are aware of the satisfaction I have had from a busy life and have asked many times in the past why I haven’t pursued the role of Local Board chairperson. It now feels the time is right! ➤➤The Times will be keeping the readers updated on the work that the Howick Local Board is doing in monthly column that will start soon

WELLBEING

Helping children gain confidence Do children have stress? How do they deal with anxiety? What are the coping mechanisms? Why don’t we learn how to deal with stress from an early age? These are questions that have been repeatedly asked. “When we talk to children, we realise that their minds mirror the violence of the world,” says Neelu Taore, an Art of Living practitioner and teacher. “There is too much exposure to multimedia even when their minds are too delicate to handle it. Problems associated with growing up – peer pressure, bullying, family trouble and concentration issues are some of the issue children are dealing with,” says Neelu who is part of the Art of Living movement that works

towards helping people to find peace within and uplift individuals as well as society at large. “If we need children to grow into balanced, progressive individuals, they need to be given tools to handle stress and their minds,” she says. To teach children this skill, the Art Excel (All Round Training in Excellence) program was

designed. It teaches life skills, stress reduction techniques, helps children deal with their emotions and mindfulness. Through simple breathing and mindfulness exercises and games that encourage creativity and learning, this programme connects with children in a fun and light atmosphere. The Art Excel is dedicated to reviving human values among children and teaching them stress-management techniques that will help them deal with negative emotions and instil confidence in them. ➤➤From February 6-8 at Willowbank School, Dannemora. ANIMAL MANAGEMENT

Dog bites child on local beach A local father is furious after his daughter was bitten by a Staffordshire bull terrier on Eastern Beach. According to the Neal Holt, his 10-year-old daughter Christiana was sitting in shallow water at around 6:35pm on Tuesday January 21, when the unrestrained dog ran towards her aggressively and bit her on the ear. After chasing the dog away, it approached another girl in shallow water and Mr Holt “advised that family to not let the dog get any closer to her”. The dog’s owner came over and apologised and said he would come back to check on the girl once he had secured the animal in his car. Mr Holt followed the man down the beach and saw him get

into a waiting car and watched him “doing a runner”. Christiana was then taken to East Care Accident & Medical Clinic and then onto Middlemore Hospital. Mr Holt would like to say “a big thank you to the staff there and to the people who assisted our family on the beach”. Mr Holt said the incident could have been much worse. “Christiana was very lucky that the dog only went for her ear... dogs are prohibited on the beach prior to 7pm.” When asked if loose dogs were a problem at the beach, Mr Holt said, “ A lot of people manage their dogs well but in the six-anda-half years that we have lived at Eastern Beach, my two children have been accosted four times (by dogs).

10-year-old Christiana Holt was bitten on the ear. Photo supplied

“I am pretty frustrated that this is occurring.” Animal management is investigating the incident.

Ringing in the New Year with prayers and festivity ■■BY FARIDA MASTER

P

rayers were offered, incense sticks lit, followed by the sound of cymbals and drum beats as the clock struck 12 on Friday at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush. The venerable Abbess Manshin read a special prayer written by Master Hsing Yun for those affected by the Coronavirus in China. Community Police were part of the celebration and were asked for tips on how people can keep safe from the deadly virus. Every visitor to the Buddhist Tem-

ple on New Year’s Eve was politely asked to sanitise their hands before entering the premises. Long queues to receive little red packets containing a goodwill message from Abbess Manshin, filled the temple grounds as families patiently waited their turn. There were equally long queues at the two Wishing Wells. An energetic Lion Dance (symbol of power, wisdom and good fortune ) followed by the ringing of the bell (at the stroke of midnight), rung in the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rat with great gusto and festivity.

Old Howick library not required by AT

A

■■BY JIM BIRCHALL

T

he future of the site occupied by the old Howick library is uncertain after Auckland Transport (AT) advised they have no plans for the land parcel at 16 Fencible Drive, Howick. The library has sat unoccupied since 2011. Over that period it was used as a makeshift storage area for local market stall holders and has recently been closed to former community group key holders the Howick Village Association. The building is structurally unsafe and has had past issues with asbestos. It is derelict inside and showing signs of significant water damage and the air is thick with a pungent odour. Subsequently, the property has not been available for leasing purposes. Auckland Council’s development arm Panuku stated in August 2019 that the “Potential to explore idea of developing hybrid commercial/community space, including residential housing outcomes” and added “further engagement with the board is dependent on AT (Auckland Transport) confirming transport infrastructure requirements for the property”. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown had pushed for resolution on the matter prior to Christmas. However, in a letter dated 6 January of this year from AT Chief executive Shane Ellison to Mr Brown,

Ellison stated AT has now concluded they have no use for the building and/or surrounding area. “Panuku (previously Auckland Council Property Limited) have managed this property since the establishment of Auckland Council. The property has been part of Auckland Council’s property ‘rationalisation’ process since 2011 the aim of which is to decide if council should retain the property, or if it is suitable for sale. Part of this process involves discussion and integration of planning with Council Controlled Organisations. Since 2011, Auckland Transport has considered three major projects that may require land in Howick: the Eastern New Network (a plan to expedite eastern travel times), AMETI Eastern Busway and the Airport to Botany project. With three large projects planned in Howick, all with potential to need

land near Howick, Auckland Transport maintained its interest in 16 Fencible Drive. The most recent consideration was about whether bus network changes related to the Airport to Botany project will require supporting infrastructure that would need this land. At this time, the business case for the Airport to Botany project is near completion and although not finalised, Auckland Transport is able to confirm that the property is not required. This is the final project requiring consideration and Auckland Transport has advised Panuku that it does not have a transport requirement for this land. So for the moment the building will remain, with the site ripe with development potential. What do you think should be done with the land? E-mail jim@times. co.nz

Listening to Cockle Bay’s Brian bout a year ago local man Brian approached me, perplexed about why, over many years, no government department or minister has taken seriously the long-term environmental problems we face at Cockle Bay Beach. Brian lives in Cockle Bay. He sees the beach every day from his home. He cares about his local community. He wants his grandchildren and their grandchildren to be able to enjoy Cockle Bay as generations before have. Cockle Bay Beach has one of the lowest numbers of cockles of all the beaches that have shellfish restrictions in place. Surveys that have been taken since 2011 have shown a marked downward trend in the number of cockles over the years. While a 50-cockle seasonal limit is in place at the beach between May and September there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that the limit is being ignored. Brian challenged me to once again take up the effort of convincing the Minister of Fisheries to close Cockle Bay to all shellfish harvesting for at least five years, to allow the beach to recover. I had walked that path before, unsuccessfully. When I was with the National Party, the National Minister of Fisheries at the time refused to act. Like all big party MPs, I was required back then to put the party first and support our minis-

ter. As an independent voice I can now properly stand up for Botany and achieve real results. And so I took up Brian’s challenge. After months of collecting signatures for a petition, both online and in person, as well as articles and billboards promoting the Cockle Bay cause, we delivered our petition before Christmas. A few weeks ago the current Minister of Fisheries, Stuart Nash, called me. He had good news. Finally, some action was going to be taken. The Minister let me know that, following our community efforts, he has ordered a new survey of the beach to take place in February. Unless that survey shows an increase in the cockles at the beach, he said he will be taking serious management action. This will likely see a rahui or ban placed on the collecting of all shellfish. Cockle Bay is finally being taken seriously and we will now see change. Thank you to everyone who supported this petition and thank you Brian. One person can make a difference. ➤➤Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

Your view We need more forests

Presumably pre-schoolers are taught to clean up their own mess so when you read that industrial nations are pumping a record 43.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere this year, somewhere between becoming a world leader and politician, the preschool message has been lost. Similarly one is taught in secondary school biology the importance of the balance of nature, a message reiterated many times over in David Attenborough’s wonderful Planet Earth series. Unless politicians revisit these vital lessons taught in schools and clean up the mess they have allowed to fester (which amounts to restoring balance of carbon in nature) climate Armageddon is an absolute certainty. The solution is as plain as the nose on your face. It has been spelled out by scientists. If all nations in cooperation plant or replant forests amounting to the size of Canada in addition to the present ones worldwide to take that carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, the balance of nature will be restored and an accelerating climate will resume some semblance of normality. As long as we rely on politicians, it’s not going to happen so it will take a major climate catastrophe for the peoples of the earth with a united voice to action the planting of such a forest and the other immediate action we can take and as is highly recommended by scientists to stem global warming is to paint our roofs white to reflect the sun’s

Celebrate Chinese New Year

It’s no laughing matter Over the last year or so, out on my runs, I have found the odd pile of two or three cartridges and wondered what they are being used for. Being a cynical older person I assumed it wasn’t for anything good. But I didn’t do anything about it until I found about 25 of them spread over a small area in the car park above Mellons Bay early morning on Sunday, January 5. I collected them all in a large McDonald’s slushy container and tossed them into the bin. The next day I ‘phoned my doctor’s surgery and asked the nurse about them. She informed me that young people are sniffing/huffing them heat away and could also serve as a tangible protest by today’s youth sending the message to world leaders to clean up their mess. Gary Hollis, Mellons Bay

Bring our troops home I do believe it’s time to withdraw our NZ troops from the Middle East, not just Iraq. It’s a worthless cause to massage the ego of the US, not a war that we should put our men’s lives on the line for! However, if NZ’s leaders are reluctant to withdraw our troops from the Middle East, then those

because they are filled with nitrous oxide – laughing gas. My overall belief is that these cartridges are being used by young people as they hang out on Saturday nights in parks and on beaches because I never see them on the urban streets during the week when I walk around the area. I’m sure the young would not be investing in them unless they are getting some kind of ‘high’ from them somehow. I’ve always found them in parks and on beaches which is where the young hang out to socialise and plot! I had planned to ask the police about it but it slipped my mind as I got busy with other things. Vicky Williamson Bucklands Beach

Enjoy an afternoon of fun, food, culture, music and other performances to celebrate the Lunar new year - the year of the rat Howick Local Board, in partnership with the Pakuranga Chinese Association, is once again holding an event to celebrate this auspicious time of the year with its annual signature event. As well as cultural performances there will be interesting activities as well as food stalls. It’s just one of the ways the local board showcases and celebrates the area’s cultural diversity. ➤➤Howick Chinese New Year 2020, Saturday February 1, 2-5pm, Botany Town Centre, Town Centre Drive (in front of the food court). leaders should go as replacements for all those NZ soldiers who have family here at home and would like to opt out of this insane predicament that the USA have put the world into. Certainly lives are cheap for the sacrifice as long as it’s not yours and I bet all political leaders are of that mindset! I also believe that it’s time for NZ to pull out from the membership of the UN as it’s just the puppet for the whims and fancies of the Western World, especially the USA. It is a known fact that the USA has dropped thousands of bombs on any part of the world that it wants

to control, yet the UN has been quiet about all the political meddling and interference, not peaceable mediation, those countries – Vietnam being one of them – have faced from the USA. Please bring our men home before it gets any worse and unnecessary lives are sacrificed. Margaret Scott Pakuranga

Carpark accident

Recently I experienced a fall at the New World supermarket car park in Howick. I tripped over a judder bar, falling full force onto my face and sustain-

ing injuries to the left side of my face, my knee and my shoulder and also breaking my glasses. A number of people came to my assistance including two New World employees. In particular I would like to give thanks to the ladies that were with me the entire time and also a special thank you to Barney who drove me home and to Carly who returned my car to my home address. Thank you all for your compassion and practical assistance. We are fortunate to have such helpful and caring people residing in our community. Anna Mae Langstone

TRYATHLON

Kids give it a try Hundreds of East Auckland children will swim, cycle & run their way to the finish line as part of the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. The popular kids’ event is being held at Pt England Reserve on Sunday February 9 with the TRYathlon starting at 9am. Participants will swim, cycle & run their way to the finish line to receive a medal from some of New Zealand’s leading sporting stars. Since the very first TRYathlon event in 1992 (which boasted just 800 entrants) more than 400,000 Kiwi kids have given it a try. The triathlon, which is now in its 28th year, expects more than 35,000 participants to take part from across the country, making it the world’s largest U16 triathlon series. The iconic sporting event introduces thousands of New Zealand children to organised sport, in a positive environment which encourages them to lead active lifestyles. This year the company has created a new introductory event for six-year-olds, who are too young to take part in the TRYathlon. The new Splash & Dash event will be run at 16 TRYathlon events this summer - including the East Auckland event - and will see budding TRYathletes, complete a 50-metre swim followed by a 1500 metre run. The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon events are running throughout New Zealand until March 29. Visit try.weetbix.co.nz for more information. cannot think of any time when women’s sport in New Zealand has been as strong as it is now. In netball, rugby, sevens, kayaking and rowing, Kiwi women are world-beaters. What makes it so special in netball and sevens is the joyous sense of unity which blends brilliant individuals into an indomitable team. Only one point separated the Silver Ferns from the Australian Diamonds at the World Cup final thriller in Liverpool last year. But it was beautiful to behold with the three veteran fossils Maria Folau, Casey Kopu and Laura Langman capping outstanding careers with a world crown. There were other stars too, notably lively goal keep Jane Watson and goal attack Ameliaranne Ekenasio whose immaculate shooting sometimes even surpassed that of the brilliant Folau. players and champion coach Noeline Taurua, rates among the best I have seen. The Silver Ferns should win both the team and supreme prizes at the Halberg Awards when the inspirational Taurua should also be a strong candidate for the coach award. Meanwhile the team continues to shine in England under the captaincy of the popular Ekenasio despite the absence of the three fossils. Maia Wilson has done exceptionally well in taking her chance following the retirement of Folau who was expected to leave a huge hole. There is also much to admire about the Black Ferns Sevens who continued their winning habit by claiming the Hamilton Sevens title when beating Canada 24-7 last Sunday. Possessed of some strong tacklers, Canada are no pushovers. However they couldn’t cope with the pace and skill of the New Zealanders who have welcomed back Sarah

Hirini and Michaela Boyd after long lay-offs because of injuries. The speedy Boyd looked like she’d never been away when she scored twice in the final with Niall Williams and Stacey Fluhler (nee Waaka) also notching tries. Having trounced both England and China 40-7 within 14 minutes, they then beat Fiji 38-21 and France 19-7. In the absence of Hirini, Boyd and the still unavailable Portia Woodman, brilliant halfback Tyla Nathan-Wong had led the team superbly while the smiling, side-stepping Fluhler was the try-scoring star opponents failed to contain. Kelly Brazier, the veteran blonde who scored the last second winning try against Australia at the 2016 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, is another who consistently performs outstandingly. The All Blacks Sevens also maintained their winning streak at Hamilton when overcoming Wales, Scotland

and the formidable Americans before sneaking home 17-14 against an improving Australia. Having done well to make the final, France trailed 12-5 at half-time only to see the All Blacks add a further three tries with captain Scott Curry completing his hat-trick. Some interesting facts about the growth in women’s rugby were released in an excellent article written by LockerRoom editor Suzanne McFadden last year. In 2018 an extra six million women joined World Rugby’s fan base and 40 per cent of the total 400 million were female. These figures are not reflected in crowd numbers attending women’s matches compared with those for men. However the standard has risen remarkably and deserves greater support. For the second year running more girls had got into playing rugby than boys. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer.

he South African women’s cricket team warmed up for their threematch one day series with New Zealand’s White Ferns (played over the weekend in Auckland), with a game against the Auckland Hearts, at Saint Kentigern College. TEACHING STYLE:

Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
