embile Mvimbi, a Clevedon Volunteer Firefighter was devastated on receiving the shocking news during a brigade practice evening that his father had been shot in an armed robbery in South Africa. Wanting to help Tembile’s young family in need of assistance during a very tough time, fellow volunteer firefighter Ben Herlihy set up a Givealittle page saying: “Our fellow Clevedon Volunteer Firefighter, Tembile Mvimbi, who is a local sharemilker and young father received the awful news that his father was shot and murdered during an armed robbery in South Africa. “We are appealing to the Clevedon community, the Fire and Emergency NZ Family and Dairy Farming community on his behalf for contributions to help pay for his flight home for his father’s funeral and to aid his young family during this stressful time.” “Funds that are raised will be used to pay for Tem’s flight to South Africa and help his young family cope with living costs whilst he is away.” The amount raised from 38 donations was $2215, a big help for Tembeli to fly to Johannesburg and drive 10 miles further into the interiors of the village, but Ben says “Tembeli is a super genuine guy who needs more help”. “It’s a huge financial strain as he lives on the farm with a young family and leases it.” Apart from the trauma of discovering that his father was attacked the minute he got off the bus to collect his pension, Ben says that the costs of flights and burial amounted to well over $5000. “He just returned on Tuesday from South

School buses cut ■■By Therese Henkin

anic is mounting among the parents of east Auckland school children as 16 schools will be losing some of their school buses next year. As part of Auckland Transport’s new bus network, selected schools will have their regular school bus services withdrawn, and alternate public transport routes have been suggested. Botany mum, Angelika Sansom says she is horrified that her 9 year old children will now have to cross a secluded reserve and busy roads to get to and from Botany Downs Primary. “I don’t feel comfortable with my kids catching public transport alone where nobody is looking out for them and they don’t know anyone.” “On top of that the bus doesn’t go anywhere remotely close to the school.” The bus route suggested for her children by Auckland Transport will drop her kids outside Millhouse Reserve which leaves Sansom with concerns for their safety crossing the reserve, which is out of sight of the road. She says even if she dropped her children at the school gates in the morning, they would still need to catch the bus home. The alternate bus stop recommended for their drive home Sansom says would drop the kids outside the Accident and Emergency Clinic on Botany Road, forcing her kids to cross

busy Botany Road, alone. “They have told me by themselves that they don’t feel comfortable crossing Botany Road. Even I feel nervous crossing that road, and I do it at the traffic lights. I just won’t allow them to do that.” Sansom says despite statistics AT is using to justify withdrawing school bus services, there are bus loads of student who will be affected by these bus changes. “The bus my children catch services about six schools in the area. They are giving me statistics, which I know are incorrect, on their being too few Botany Downs Primary students using the bus,” she says. “But whoever put this bus service together in the first place had the foresight to see that if each school has a few students that need to catch it, add them together and you have a full bus.” AT Spokesperson, James Ireland says all bus services will be safe for children to take and are all required to have CCTV cameras. “We also provide a Travelwise programme to every school that wants to take part. We can organise walking school buses and provide the schools with the information and support they need to ensure their students get to school safely.” He says all 16 schools in east Auckland that will have changes will have an alternative route that is suitable for children.

“We have to provide an overall connected network that serves the area as best as possible, and this means we cannot design each route to fit every individual’s journey, but what we are doing is providing a far better service across the city,” he says. He says the rumour that all school bus service for east Auckland are being removed is completely untrue. “The main reason for the changes is to ensure that school buses compliment the public bus network rather than duplicate it, as currently happens too often. “Right now our bus routes look like spaghetti thrown against a map. Once the New Network rolls out it will be simpler, easier to understand and much more frequent.”

t a time when the world is horrified with high profile women sharing their survival stories of sexual harassment, abuse and assault, Zonta East Auckland is working towards the Orange Splash Day to be held on November 25. The ongoing advocacy campaign sends a strong message to raise awareness against unacceptable levels of violence against women and girls around the world. Members of Zonta East Auckland, a part of an international women’s organisation dedicated to changing lives, will be handing out around 3000 orange ribbons to individuals and businesses in the Howick area. The orange ribbons signify that leading a dignified life free of violence is not just a women’s issue but a societal one. The #METOO campaign that has gone viral on social media with hashtags being used in 12 millions posts in the first 24 hours is proof of the magnitude of the problem — rampant not only amongst economically disadvantaged girls but also women of substance and celebrities who finally decided to come out with the shameful secret. The ongoing advocacy campaign Zonta Says No that kick-started in November 2012, continues with the antiviolence initiative in local communities. “We intend to splash Howick township with ribbons and a display the rotunda and Howick Library. There will also be Police officers supporting us, as well as

students from Macleans College who are part of the young Z Club,” says Gay Gallagher an active member of Zonta East Auckland that recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. “It’s not only about saying no to violence but Zontains have also been proactive to initiate change,” she says. Gay cites the Loves Me Not campaign that Zonta supported for the last three-and-a-half years in secondary schools. The Loves Me Not initiative explores healthy relationships and the sensitive subject of relationship abuse and consent. Following the death of Sophie Elliot at the hands of a former boyfriend that shocked the nation, it became clear that she had been in a typically abusive

relationship. Sadly neither Sophie nor her mother had been able to read the tell-tale signs. The Loves Me Not campaign aims at lowering the levels of domestic violence through education. “It’s about recognising healthy and unhealthy relationships. The campaign targeted at Year 12 students enabled young adults to be in a safe and positive relationship.” Empowering women through service and advocacy, Zonta works towards promoting justice and universal respect for human rights as it works towards law changes to prevent female genital mutilation, human trafficking and violence against women that includes psychological, physical and sexual violence.

Police investigate after robbers hit local service stations numerous posts and images of the targeted premises. “In the first incident the attendant activated a panic alarm after several offenders broke through the glass doors. “In the second incident offenders smashed a window and entered the store.” No one was injured in either incident. “The offenders unsuccessfully attempted to take cigarettes from the first premise and stole

Politics

United Future to disband United Future party leader Damian Light has announced the party will disband. Light, who stood as the party’s Botany candidate in the 2017 General Election, said in a press release the party is “extremely proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 15 years working alongside the government of the day, both National and Labour”. By August 2017, United Future had become the party with the longest continuous role in New Zealand government for 100 years.

Light said while the party had achieved a long list of successes in parliament, it had struggled in the recent election, scoring just 0.1 per cent of the vote. As part of its post election review, the party had spoken to those who voted for the party and those who didn’t. “We know people like our policies and vision but it hasn’t translated into votes,” said Light. “While the reasons vary, what has become clear is that UnitedFuture will not be able to achieve the significant number of votes

required to break the high threshold.” “Therefore we have decided is it time to disband the UnitedFuture party.” In August, former United Future leader and long time MP for Ohariu Peter Dunne announced he would retire from politics after the 2017 General Election thrusting Light into the role of leader just weeks out from the election. A motion to disband the party unanimously passed at the party’s Annual General Meeting in Auckland.

OPINION

TRANSPORT

Right back in to it

No buses here, thanks ■ BY THERESE HENKIN

T

he new bus network in east Auckland isn’t being celebrated by everyone. Some Union Road residents are facing two bus stops being established directly outside their properties come December 10, and they’re not happy about it. The new bus stops are proposed outside 30 and 41 Union Road in Howick as part of the new bus network being rolled out across Auckland. “The biggest issue with these bus stops is that they aren’t safe,” says Anthony Brobbel, whose house will directly be impacted by the proposed bus stops. Brobbel says if the bus stops go ahead, they will be situated where there is currently ‘no parking’ lines and will force motorists to cross the road’s yellow centre line to overtake buses which have pulled over. He says adding bus stops to a road that already has issues with people speeding, and experiences significant traffic back-log during peak times is a dangerous move. “Using Google maps to measure the distance from kerb to kerb, this appears to be the narrowest point of the road,” he says. “And with several buses stopped along this stretch

A photo taken by Union Road resident, Anthony Brobbel showing a car crossing the solid yellow centre line to overtake a bus parked in the proposed bus stop location. Photo: Supplied

of road, vehicles are crossing the solid yellow centre line to pass; it’s an inevitable accident waiting to happen.” Brobbel also worries that when buses are stopped, motorists will have no visibility when pulling out of the Union Road shops and neighbouring driveways. Despite his prompt and detailed objection letter, Brobbel says he waited weeks for a response before receiving a response that “danced around the safety concerns”. He says the letter also mistakenly referred to Dannemora Drive instead of Union Road. Brobbel says he was also shocked to see a bus using the proposed location as a bus stop before the consultation period had ended.

“They are asking for these submissions under the illusion that we have a fair say and we have fair opportunity to object,” he says. Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson James Ireland says bus drivers are not allowed to stop in the proposed bus stop location before a bus stop infrastructure is established and this matter will be taken up with the bus company. “We are definitely taking the consultation process seriously. We don’t want people to be unhappy with the new bus network,” he says. Ireland says all decisions relating to the location of new bus stops is reviewed by qualified and experienced road safety experts before ratification.

“A statutory committee established in every local government jurisdiction responsible for making sure that only safe and legally compliant modifications are made in the road corridor.” “We admit that a driver could be hemmed in by the yellow centre line and would have to wait until bus moved again, this could result in a minor delay for the driver. As a transport agency we need to balance this minor inconvenience versus the wider benefits of the project,” he says. Ireland says bus stops also have different considerations to the requirements for ‘no stopping’ lines. “Buses only stop for a short time a couple times in an hour. Buses do not sit in place like a parked car and all access is on the footpath side unlike in a car.” Brobbel says he is disappointed with AT’s response and feels they are dismissing the safety concerns. “You only have to listen to road safety campaigns to know that anything can happen in a few seconds. If AT and the police are actively advertising that, then telling me the buses will only be stopped for 20-30 seconds is not justification to proceed.” The new east Auckland Bus network will be rolled out on December 10, 2017.

Parliament is now back in full swing and National has shown that we are ready to hold the Government to account as a strong and unified opposition. It is the role of the opposition to test the government’s policies and make sure they are prepared for Parliament. Last week we challenged Labour on whether they had organised themselves enough to elect their chosen speaker and we had our first few question times of the year. Being in opposition is not always about opposing things. While we will certainly oppose new laws that we think will undermine the hard work New Zealander’s have put in, we will also support things that we believe will build on the successes of hard working New Zealanders. That is why Bill English has promised National’s support for any new TPP legislation and for extending paid parental leave. This is the opposition party working as it should be, in the interests of New Zealand. In terms of my role, I continue to serve as National’s chief whip, organising our Caucus in Parliament and ensuring everything runs smoothly within the team. In addition to this, Bill English has asked me to be the National Party’s Local Government spokesperson, and associate spokesperson for Transport. As someone who

With Jami-Lee Ross

has previous served as a city councillor for both Manukau City and Auckland councils, it is good to be back on familiar territory. In my role as spokesperson I will be looking to ensure that both taxpayers and ratepayers are getting value for the money we all pay to the Government and our local councils. National is committed to ensuring that ratepayers get clear information about how their councils are performing, identifying and fixing frustrating and inefficient rules and regulations. We also need to ensure that the central government is working constructively with individual local and regional councils to ensure each region has the support it needs for the unique challenges and opportunities they face. I am excited to get stuck in to the role and start holding the Government to account to ensure that our councils, community boards and ratepayers have a strong voice in Parliament from the National party. ndrew Barrett is dedicated to his sport. He wakes up at 3:45 every morning to go to the gym until 6am, before heading to work. All up, he estimates he spends about three hours per day training, seven days a week. His mealtimes work like clockwork and don’t change – ever. On Sunday, he prepares all of his meals for the week – usually a big task for the average person but an even bigger challenge for Andrew. When he spoke to the Times, he’d prepared 40 meals for the week. The hard work is paying off though – Andrew currently holds the 2016 Mr WFF NZ Sport Model

title, the 2017 Auckland Title and the Pan Pacific title as well as recently receiving his Pro card. It’s a challenge – but that’s the best part about it, says Andrew. “There’s heaps I really like about it [and] one is that it’s extremely difficult to do – especially long term.” He points to the difference between most people who prepare to compete in one competition then return to normal and long-term competitors who constantly train in preparation for the next competition and says maintaining the strict nutrition is the hardest part of all of it and compares it to eating like a dog. “I know exactly what I’m having throughout the day because it’s the same thing as yesterday and

Author of beloved children’s books visits Our Lady Star of the Sea ■■By Therese Henkin

T

wo students organised a very special guest to visit Our Lady Star of the Sea school last week. Best-selling author James Russell had a hall full of young students in stitches as he spoke to them about his new book, why he loves writing for children and when he started to go bald. The visit was organised by Year 5

students Caelis Samuel and Ben Botting who fell in love with Russell’s witty children’s books. “I wasn’t really keen on books but once I started reading his books I really loved it and started to really enjoy reading,” says Caelis. The boys say that what they love most about Russell’s picture books is that not only do they tell the story of the wild adventures of two brothers Flynn and Paddy, but he uses aug-

mented reality to bring the books to life. “You can hover your [smart phone or tablet] over the book using a special app and the pictures start moving on your screen. It’s really cool,” Caelis says. The boys say after telling their teacher, Bronwyn Bell, how much they love Russell’s books and how much they wanted to meet him, she suggested they email him and ask.

So the two boys reached out to Russell and within an hour he had responded saying he would love to visit the students. “The boys organised everything entirely themselves with a little help from me. They really took the initiative and made this happen,” says Mrs Bell. “In preparation for James’ visit they organised permission slips to go out to the parents, flyers to post

around the school and hosted readings of his books in the library at lunch times. We had this plan but they’ve kept me on track as much as I’ve kept them on track. After a term of planning, the visit went off without a hitch and the whole school got to hear excerpts from Russell’s books. “I really hope the students like meeting Mr Russell because we definitely will,” says Ben.

Urban fantasy, history, watching animated films and things they dream about, are some of the triggers that inspire students of Howick College to flex their creative muscle. Asking students to write ‘what if’ statements/scenarios that might further be developed into a novel, Melbourne-based author of two books Sriram Iyer recently conducted an interactive workshop that covered story starters, planning a novel, writing a novel, getting published and market-

ing a novel. A former Flat Bush resident, the author of Wings of Silence which is currently being used by students in Howick College and Alfriston College for their reading standards in NCEA Level 1 and 2 exams, also spoke about his second book Let Me Go which has been just launched. There were stimulating conversations with imagination running wild as the accomplished singersongwriter, with over 2.5 million views on YouTube, and author of short stories, Sriram provided

a deep insight into the world of publishing. The Creative Writing group at Howick College led by Year 13 students Rupinderpal Singh and Ciara Beintken and supported by teacher Geraldine Jamieson are a group of skilled writers. Group member Sophie Fooks has had her short story ‘A Grain of Darkness’ recently accepted for the New Zealand Young Writers anthology (releasing in Nov) titled Alter Egos, I’m not like the others.

Midnight Madness in Howick Village 2017 — 3

Howick Village ~ Friday, November 17, 9am till late

He floated the new concept for Midnight Madness, which had never happened before in the township. “The idea put forward was to get all retailers together at the same time on the same night to open until midnight and to all have super specials.

“A contribution towards the advertising was requested and within five days we had the funds. “It was a spectacular success and is now a permanent fixture on the HVBA calendar,” says John. “Both Midnight Madness and the Howick Santa Parade have grown in popularity so much over the years that the need came to leave a reasonable gap between the two events. “The popularity of both events has continued to rise and has been the reason to change the day for the Santa Parade.” The Howick Santa Parade was moved to a Sunday in 2014 for the first time and this year, it’s again on Sunday, December 3 starting at 2.30pm. The popular Fencible Walk Park display and Snow Cave will again come to life as well as a special pre-Christmas public appearance by Santa Claus, one of the many features of Midnight Madness.

or years, shoppers have relied on Midnight Madness as a way to make a start on Christmas shopping while enjoying all the revelry and vibrant mood of Howick village. It’s a great night for all and a time where locals catch up and socialise, take advantage of fantastic bargains as well as celebrate the countdown to the big day. But how did it all begin? Midnight Madness first began in 1992 to complement the Howick Santa Parade. “The idea was to begin the Christmas season with a shopping promotion that was followed by the Howick Santa Parade,” says Mrs Foster. “In those years, the Santa Parade was the very next day.” John Lovell, a new jeweller in town at the time, says he invited “everyone” including Howick business owners and operators, to a breakfast meeting at the Information Centre.

Midnight Madness in Howick Village 2017 — 5

Howick Village ~ Friday, November 17, 9am till late

JH12687

MIDNIGHT MADNESS

Even Santa will be at Midnight Madness S

anta’s decided to trial his Christmas routine early and will be in Howick tomorrow for Midnight Madness! The burly man in red will be meeting and greeting his fans from 7pm-9.30pm pm at the lighting display in Fencible Walk Park brought to life by the Howick Village Christmas Lights Charitable Trust on November 17. Catch him if you can! But if you don’t make it, fear not, he will be back on December 15 until Christmas Eve – 7pm -8.30pm, same place. Meanwhile, the lights will be up from 6pm-12pm on Midnight Madness, and will run from December 15-24, from 7pm-10pm. Another Midnight Madness fixture, East FM Radio, will be sharing the feel good vibes between Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and Barfoot & Thompson’s offices. Thanks to the community

broadcaster’s army of volunteer DJs, shoppers can tune in from 6pm. A dedicated team will be entertaining shoppers right through the night, and hosts will even be getting out on the street, interacting with and interviewing passersby. But how did the volunteer-run radio station broadcasting on 88.1FM & 107.1FM and become the indispensable community powerhouse it is today? Its beginnings can be traced back to founder Mike Rowse’s innovative pastime. A low-power radio buff, Mike had been running his own station from home for three years prior to the launch of Howick Village Radio in 2008, now East FM. He donated his equipment to the Howick Village Association (now the Howick Village Business Association or HVBA) on “perma-

nent loan”. Over the years, it has be-come a true voice for the community – a place for budding broadcasters and musicians to hone their art, as well as for local identities to connect with local listeners and shoot the breeze. In 2013, the fundraiser at The Good Home, raised $7500, which enabled the purchase of its own retro mobile caravan. Another fundraising evening was held at The Monterey on Monday. East FM is able to continue its good work in the community. A busy summer of outside broadcasts lies ahead for the team as they attend various community events including Howick Coastguard’s 60 year celebrations this Saturday, the successful Brit & Euro Car Show in March and the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday December 3.

Howick Coastguard Listen, it’s all about celebrates 60 years expressing yourself

T

he Howick Volunteer Coastguard is celebrating six decades of service. On Saturday, the parking lot of the Howick Beach reserve will be abuzz with excitement as the community gathers to take part in the Howick Volunteer Coastguards public open day. Food trucks, flare demonstrations, fun activities for children, and music are on the programme from 10pm to 2pm. Guests will also be given the opportunity to ride on the Howick Rescue One Vessel. Coastguard spokesman Alan Martin says it’s thanks to the Howick community that the first rescue vessel was launched and has kept the community safe in local waters for the past 60 years. “Howick Volunteer Coastguard was formed in 1956 after the tragic drowning of three local lads who had set off from

Howick Beach on a fishing trip,” he says. “The community raised money for the first rescue vessel with assistance from the-then Howick Borough Council.” He says that today the Howick Volunteer Coastguard, previously named Howick Sea Rescue, has a state of the art rescue vessel that is launched by tractor on Howick Beach. There are currently more than 50 members covering operational boat crews and support crews who respond to problems from a flat battery to serious medical call outs. Martin says the open day is a way to celebrate the success of the community in establishing the first rescue vessel, invite them to learn more about what the coastguard do and acknowledge the work that the coastguard do.

Why Stop Men Dying Too Young? • The state of men’s health is in crisis. • Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health. For men, this is not good news. This has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or health care providers. • Too many men are “toughing it out,” keeping their problems to themselves and suffering in silence. It’s time to break that silence and stop men dying too young.

Re reserves. I have taken visitors to see our lovely coastal beaches and walkways, and I am ashamed, ashamed because the berms, reserves and walkways are kneehigh with grass and weeds. Ashamed because we picked up bottles, cans and endless packets and wrappers lying amongst the growth in just one reserve alone! Ashamed because there was three large deposits of dog faeces lying there – and even after leaving the reserve in question we walked past overflowing rubbish bins on the beach – not emptied – with garbage including food blowing around the roadway and beach. I walk the area regularly and the state of our reserves and walkways is appalling. Where are the contractors who are supposed to keep them mowed, cleaned or emptied? Sack them – rain is not an excuse! Jill McIlvride

An admirable response I wish to commend Jami-Lee Ross on his recent temperate and restrained article on the result of the recent General Election. (Botany and Ormiston Times, November 2) As National’s MP for Botany, Jami-Lee might have been forgiven for a smidgen of invective or even a tear or two over his party’s exclusion from government by Winston Peters’ decision to run with Labour and the Greens, but no, he refrained from such unproductive complaints . Whatever one thinks of Winston’s decision, there is no good reason to cavil over the way MMP handed him the decisive vote on which parties were to form the new government. It is admirable that Jami-Lee encourages Jacinda as the new PM and wishes her well. He rightly notes, that despite a political disappointment, this is not the end of the world, and that the sun will continue to rise on New Zealand and its green, green grass. Let us also hope that all our MPs perform as professionals for the good of the country in the three years of a new government that lie ahead. Anthony Mercer, Howick

Roading raises questions I complained to Auckland Transport about the fact that part of the road from Cheriton Road to Paisley Road had been re-made a fortnight ago. Fulton Hogan had remade the road beautifully two weeks ago but on Thursday, November 2 and the day before had now ripped up the kerb stones, damaged the brand new road and destroyed quite a bit of the new seal. Climate issue is complex A recent study of hurricanes which struck Florida during a cooler part of earth’s history 12,000 years ago showed they were more powerful than the ones that have created so much destruction just recently in the earth’s warmer period. It illustrates just how complex the earth’s climate actually is and how careful scientists must be in drawing conclusions. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay

calls to Auckland Transport, one of which was put down while I was speaking, I finally spoke to the two people who eventually admitted to being in charge of the project. One was busy eating lunch at 1100 and was too engrossed to stop eating while we discussed the project and their apparent disgraceful performance and destruction of the brand new road. Between mouthfuls of food, clattering of knives and forks, he attempted to tell me the story. I was amazed that if the kerb stones need replacing, that job would have been done first, before destroying the old road. He said that while laying the new road some incompetent driver of a scraper had damaged the kerb while laying the road, hence the need to do the kerb stones then repair the road. However the good news is that the repair/renewal of kerb stones is not to ratepayers account (apparently) but to Fulton Hogan the contractor (yeah right). Apparently there is another surface to be done to the road as you will notice a huge gap between the join of Paisley Road and Mellons Bay Road. I was assured that the finished road would be perfect. If plastic takes a thousand years to break down in the sea, who was the sorry engineer and designer who was no doubt paid a lifetime’s salary to produce the metal rubbish bins all the way along our eastern beaches? After three years, because of salt spray, they are no longer operable and in another three will mostly be rusted hulks creating the mother of all eyesores for our visitors to guffaw about. It’s not rocket science to realise plastic would have been a better

option and, while I’m at it, who is the Australian contractor contracted to mow our reserves? Like the litter bin designer, he must be laughing all the way to the bank. Gary Hollis, Mellons Bay

No bus stop here please Open Letter to Micheal Xiong, Auckland Transport Re: Proposed New Bus Stop 141 Clovelly Road Dear Mr. Xiong, Once again Auckland Council fails the ratepayers of this city badly. In spite of us lodging an objection on the grounds of safety issues and your assurances that we would be kept in the loop and provided with feedback regarding the 141 Clovelly Road bus stop, what has happened? Nothing, not a single word has come from you and this morning (Tuesday, October 31) the Fulton Hogan contractors arrived and marked out the bus stop footprint. This is just another prime example of the left hand having no idea what the right hand is doing. Phil Williams

he flash $10 million LaFerrari Aperta which is so exclusive that according to some, even the Sultan of Brunei wasn’t allowed to buy it, wasn’t the only scene stealer at Big Boys Toys held at ASB Showground over the weekend. Vying for attention was a flawless beauty - the gold-panelled 488 Spider 2017 exuding power and a superior experience. Every man’s dream come true, the premier male lifestyle show in New Zealand, now in its 18th year, had all the trappings of sleek, shiny, sophisticated mean machines and gadgets competing with super saloons, race cars and off roaders on display. The fast and furious from Ferrari, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, SRT and RAM was a feast for the eyes. Long queues to test drive a line-up of electric cars including Tesla, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai was testimony to the interest the cars of the future are generating. There was plenty to keep everyone entertained from watching death-defying stunts by Kiwi FMX (freestyle motocross) legends Nick Franklin and Caleb Delacy along with 15-year-old FMX star Carlos Hanlon, (youngest New Zealander to land a back-flip) to the strong man competition. A lot of young ones were spotted getting autographs from Nitro Circus rider Paul Langland along with Hugh Wotherspoon, Lewis Clark and Nico Groenedijk. The construction zone was a new addition this year, showcasing big machinery from the construction industry in an interactive format with competitions, demonstrations and an opportunity for some to get behind the controls of the diggers.

Prices fall to lowest level since 2010

We’ve got all your painting requirements in East Auckland covered.

M

edian house prices in Auckland have fallen 3.2 per cent year-on-year – the biggest fall since December 2010, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). Prices rose in 14 of New Zealand’s 16 regions for the year to October, leading to the median house price for New Zealand, excluding Auckland, to reach a record price of $440,000 (an 8.5 per cent increase),. Contributing to the increase were record prices in four regions: • Waikato – up 9.9 per cent to $500,000 • Manawatu/Wanganui – up 11.5 per cent to $290,000 • Canterbury – up 4.7 per cent to $450,000 • Otago – up 14.4 per cent to $412,000. Nationally, the median price rose by 3.9 per cent year on year to $530,000. However, median prices in Auckland fell by 3.2 per cent year on year to $850,000 – the biggest fall since December 2010. The only other region across the country to experience a fall in the median price year-on-year, was Nelson, which saw a decrease of 6.8 per cent to $447,500 – the biggest drop since April 2012. Bindi Norwell, CEO at REINZ says: “As we’ve seen for some months now, prices across the country have continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate than the increases we’ve seen in some regions for the last couple of years. Waikato is now the sixth region in the country to have exceeded the half a million dollar mark at least once – something, that a few months ago, we predicted would happen shortly. “The Auckland Region’s decrease of 3.2 per cent year-on-year is predominantly the result of a large number of apartments being sold in the old Auckland City boundary which has therefore brought the median price down for the entire region. Auckland City’s median fell by 17 per cent to $850,000 the lowest price it’s been for 16 months. Interestingly, Franklin District prices increased 16 per cent year-on-year to $737,000 and North Shore City remains New Zealand’s only million-dollar plus city,” she continues. “Looking at the REINZ House Price Index (HPI) for the legacy Auckland City it only decreased 0.8 per cent year-on-year, whereas the median for the same period fell by 17 per cent, highlighting that the drop in median price is not as dramatic as a first glance would suggest. “This is because the HPI considers the mix and value of the property sold, not just the sales price,” points out Norwell.

Compared to October 2016 the median price fell 3 per cent to be $850,000. Papakura and Waitakere also had minor year-on-year falls whereas Manukau, North Shore and Rodney had minor year on year increases. The Auckland City TA had a massive drop year-onyear, but that was highly influenced by more apartment sales than usual this month. Compared to September 2017, most TA’s had an increase in median price with a tiny drop in Waitakere median and the aforementioned Auckland City median being the exceptions. On a seasonally adjusted basis, Auckland’s median price had a 1 per cent increase compared to September, indicating that the median price was a touch higher than what the REINZ expected in October. Sales volume in the Auckland region decreased 0.9 per cent compared to September, with large falls in sales numbers in Papakura

District, Manukau City and Waitakere City (12 per cent - 19 per cent decreases). Compared to October 2016, sales fell 21 per cent with volumes decreasing in all TA’s, except for Rodney District. Most notable drops occurred in Manukau City (-29 per cent), Auckland City (-24 per cent) and Franklin District (-22 per cent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales volumes increased 4 per cent compared to September indicating that the minor decrease in sales from September was a smaller drop than expected. The number of days to sell did not change from last month, staying at 37 days. The number of days to sell eased by two days compared to October 2016. Over the past 10 years the average number of days to sell during October for Auckland has been 34 days. There are now 21 weeks of inventory in the Auckland region, an increase of 8 weeks compared to October 2016.

NZI welcomes KiwiBuild approach to growth should be means tested

our homes today

Market still good for buyers T

he latest national residential property figures from Harcourts NZ shows a fluctuating market, that, while moving slower than this time last year, is still returning good results for buyers. The average national house price in October was $586,954, down just 1 per cent on October 2016. The total number of new listings around the country has also held steady, with just 0.4 per cent few new listings than last year. The number of auctions around the country dropped by 19.9 per cent last month compared to October 2016 which Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy said is down to a common belief in both buyers and sellers that auctions were an effec-

tive sales method only in a booming market. “In fact, an auction’s greatest strength is that it will give you an accurate reflection of exactly where the market is and what your property is worth,” said Kennedy. “The market is clearly fluctuating as buyers and sellers process developments like the election result, but overall things are steady with a good balance of supply and demand. “If you’re even remotely thinking about buying, this is the time to do it. And if you’re selling you can be confident there are buyers out there. The trick is making sure you have a good sales consultant who will connect you with them.”

The announcement by Housing Minister Phil Twyford that KiwiBuild houses won’t be means-tested is an expensive middleclass bribe, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union. Joe Ascroft, economic advisor at the Taxpayers’ Union said: “The aim of KiwiBuild is to provide ‘affordable housing’ but as long as you haven’t owned a home before, you will be eligible, irrespective of your income.” “Young doctors and lawyers will be thrilled to start their property portfolios with a large subsidy from taxpayers, but it’s not particularly efficient social spending. “The Minister should reconsider his proposal, and income-test KiwiBuild applicants so resources go to those who most need it.”

Since becoming the Housing and Transport Minister, Phil Twyford has underlined his intention to simplify planning rules, abolish the rural urban boundary, let Auckland grow up and out, and move towards road pricing. Commenting on Mr Twyford’s statements, the think tank The New Zealand Initiative’s executive director Dr Oliver Hartwich said: “The appointment of Phil Twyford as Housing and Transport Minister in the Labour-led government is a breath of fresh air. It is great that these two portfolios are held by the same person because

we cannot solve the housing crisis without addressing transport – and we cannot solve our transport problems without fixing the housing market.” Mr Twyford was “absolutely right” that planning rules needed to change, he said. “National talked about it for years and did little. We look forward to seeing more action from the new Minister,” Dr Hartwich said.“ “At the Initiative, we have long argued that Auckland needs to grow both up and out and that we need more intelligent ways of financing infrastructure. “

New life for outdated kitchen Cathie Barkers 90’s style kitchen has been given a new lease on life.

having a spices drawer right underneath my cook top so its within easy reach when I’m cooking, having my bin close to my garbage disposal, and having a compartment for my baking trays right next to the oven,” she says.

The once outdated blue kitchen with timber accents is now a sleek, modern design with a crisp white stone bench top and exudes functionality and comfort.

“It’s the little things like that that have made it a much better cooking experience.”

“There are now things in my kitchen I didn’t even know I needed, and now I couldn’t dream of having it any other way,” says Cathie. Cathie, who had never thought of updating her kitchen until a flood forced her hand, says she can’t believe she hadn’t considered it sooner. “My directions to our kitchen designer Hannah were that I love my island, I hate my pantry because my husband and I are short and can’t reach the back,” she says. “It had to be white. I was over blue and I didn’t want to have the same problem in six years when grey is out of fashion. So I said I wanted all white and I can add pops of colour by changing my splash back. “I had given her absolutely no guidance because I thought my kitchen was already so functional.”

Cathie says Hannah and the team at Jag Kitchens were easy to work with and accommodating. Kitchen designed by Hannah Brown (left) for Cathie Barker (right).

Cathie says Hannah put lots of thought into the layout and focussed on maximising existing space. The previously impractical pantry was replaced with a pull out 400mm dispenser pantry and the corner cupboard which previously housed often unused baking equipment was replaced with a Mondo revolving cabinet. “We were trying to achieve a more modern look and also make better use of the available space,” says Jag kitchen’s Hannah Brown. “We didn’t change the layout much but we changed the entire look, maximising drawer space

so that it was more functional, easier to use and more aesthetically pleasing. “They do have two young girls, so the durability and the resistance of the kitchen were quite important,” she says. “The cabinetry material is in our Jag acrylic gloss and the bench top was in a 30mm engineered stone. “The glossy finish is very good in terms of aesthetics but also

easy to maintain and clean by wiping it down, but also easy to maintain in terms of buffing and polishing years down the track. “The acrylic material we use is very hard wearing and very resistant to water.” Cathie says not only does her kitchen look “fantastic” but she now has a place for everything and more space to work. “Hannah came with the idea of

“When I made changes, Hannah got it done for me without delay and she gave me realistic time frames for when I could expect things done by,” she says. “Everyone called when they said they would, and the kitchen was in when they said it would be. It was so easy.” Cathie says she couldn’t be happier with her new kitchen. “I actually enjoy spending time in here and I am blown away with how it all came together.”

Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

OPINION

Proud Tongans deliver big blow R

iding home to a 28-22 win over the Kiwis in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup classic at Hamilton, Tonga scored a major victory of David versus Goliath proportions. Not that the powerful Tongans remotely resemble dwarfs in a physical sense. But like their South Pacific neighbours, Samoa and Fiji, they play for a tiny nation and are paid peanuts compared to their tier one opponents. While some tier one players are expected to be paid $50,000 each for the tournament, the decision of several former Kiwi internationals to play for Tonga, the nation of their birth or heritage, has come at considerable personal sacrifice. However there were no regrets judging from the joy on the faces of Jason Taumalolo, Sio Suia Taukeiaho, Manu Ma’u and threetry man of the match David Fusitu’a after their glorious Hamilton triumph. In overcoming a 16-2 halftime deficit to storm home, Tonga showed courage, selfbelief, power and genuine ability. It was a win which NZ Warriors rejects Tuimoala Lolohea and Konrad Hurrell also

relished with Lolohea scoring a try and Hurrell’s pass setting up two of Fusitu’a’s three. Having publicly bagged Taumalolo for his late defection, Kiwis captain Adam Blair bravely led a strong defence which eventually crumbled under constant second half pressure when the Tongans played a superb powerpacked game they couldn’t counter. Nevertheless, it was disappointing that Sean Johnson wasn’t game to weave his magic when his team needed it most. Admittedly his defence has become more robust, but those dazzling sidestepping runs that were his trademark have become a thing of the past. Hopefully that will change in the Kiwis’ Wellington quarter-final against Jarred Hayne’s Fiji, a team blessed with sizzling backs but not the forward depth of the

Kiwis. Great players like Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater rise to the occasion on the biggest stage against their toughest opponents. Now is the time for nice guy Johnson to do the same. Happily, fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is one player who has, capping several strong runs with a stunning second half try against Tonga to close the gap before Fusitu’a completed his hat-

trick. I query coach David Kidwell’s decision to opt for Kodi Nikorima as his No 6 ahead of Te Maire Martin, presumably in the belief he is the better defender. However if you want someone who scores tries and sets them up for others, Martin would be my pick, especially after scoring three against Scotland who later drew 14-all with Samoa. Meanwhile, Winston Read and Chris Wood were billed

as the English premier league stars, but it was Ryan Thomas who won the hearts of fans during the All Whites’ exciting scoreless World Cup soccer draw against favourites Peru in Wellington. Justifiably, coach Anthony Hudson praised the slightly built midfielder’s “fight and spirit” for his outstanding performance against a team ranked 112 places above the All Whites. A pity champion striker Wood’s strained hamstring

restricted him to just the final 20 minutes. However his presence did much to lift the team and rattle Peru who should be much tougher at home in Lima for the return. Meanwhile the All Blacks looked jaded in scoring a jittery rugby win in Paris against France and can count themselves fortunate not having to face Ireland or England on current form. ➤➤ Ivan Agnew is awardwinning sports writer and author

poverty doesn’t take a break at christMAS Life hasn’t been easy for the Collins family. While their neighbours were making plans to celebrate Christmas, the Collinses were worrying about how they could get through the week.

This Christmas, The Salvation Army will be called upon to give care to more than 17,000 families, providing support ranging from food parcels to counselling and accommodation.

The cupboards were empty, the bills piling up and they were close to losing their home due to rent arrears. When the family received an eviction notice they knew they needed help, so they turned to their local Salvation Army.

You can care for families like the Collinses this Christmas. Support our Christmas Appeal and give hope to those who need it most.

Together, the family worked on a plan to address their most serious issues, beginning with their living situation and then through financial and family mentoring programmes and food parcels.

CRICKET

HPCC comfortable after day one Howick Pakuranga v University

University played host to Howick Pakuranga in their Auckland Premier cricket match at Colin Maiden Park on Saturday with both teams looking to continue their strong start to the season. Howick Pakuranga won the toss and chose to bat first in overcast conditions, Anthony Ireland getting University off to the perfect start taking a wicket with only the fourth ball of the match. Jeet Patel continued the momentum for the home side removing Bill Walsh and Andrew Morrison to give University the upper hand heading to lunch with the score at 85-3. David Winn and Donovan Grobbelaar steadied the ship putting on a patient 79-run partnership before Grobbelaar was dismissed by Ireland for a well-made 43 leaving the match evenly poised at 144-4. Winn made his half-century before being dismissed for 59, University took another wicket and suddenly found themselves on top with the score at 177-6. Cameron Neal proved to be the saviour for the boys from Lloyd Elsmore scoring a quick-fire 50 off 46 balls, which ensured that Howick Pakuranga would set a decent total for University to chase. In the end, a very up and down day at Colin Maiden Park with both teams having their moments setting up a very entertaining day two with Howick Pakuranga finishing the day 313 all out. Howick Pakuranga 313 all out (D Winn 59, D Grobbelaar 43, D Phillips 34, C Neal 50, R Botadra 36, M McClenaghan 31; AJ Ireland 4-54, J Patel 3-103) playing Auckland University 0/0

omerville Intermediate placed first in the schools division at the recent Steelformers Around The Mountain relay. The team of 17 runners each took at least one turn to run a leg of the tough 150km course, with the first leg starting at 2:30am. The team was off to a strong start with student Logan Marshall determined to give the team a good lead in less than ideal cold, dark and rainy conditions. Special mentions go to Kyle Low and Matthew Lindsay who both gave stellar performances on long distances and Matthew Barker who kept smiling with dad Michael Barker riding on his bike beside him. The weather began clearing around 6:30am when van two joined the race with the afternoon consisting of smooth transitions and runners who encouraged and supported their team. Sheer hard work and dedication helped the team make up the remaining 20 minutes between them and the leading high school team in the final stages to steal the division win by one minute and three seconds for a fourth place overall. The team consisted of Logan
