t’s unusual for a school to win the Young Enterprise East Auckland Company of the Year two years in a row, especially when some of the best colleges compete hard for the big prize. Last week, Ormiston Senior College walked away with the top award for the second year running. It also had two business groups win the prestigious East Auckland Company of the Year Award. The school made a clean sweep at the Regional Awards, winning eight awards in all. Assistant Principal Mark Snoad is thrilled with the new track record. “Normally there is one top award in every region. But east Auckland gets two winners because of the size of the region, inclusive of schools in Flat Bush, Botany, Howick, Pakuranga, Glendowi and Tamaki, making east Auckland the biggest region in New Zealand. And imagine we won both of them!” he says. Two teams from Ormiston Senior College – Quick Jandal and Festivilia, will now represent east Auckland in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) National Awards in Wellington on December 6. YES is an experimental programme where students set up and run a real business. The next generation of business stars from the College also bagged two top spots for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. One of who was Vaneel Ram CEO of Festivilia, a children’s book. The team also won the Excellence in Sales and Marketing, apart from east Auckland

An online tie rental service business called Tieger by 17-year-old Pranay Prasad won the Excellence in Business Management Award. All award winners acknowledge the role that the teachers play in empowering them. “They treat us like business entrepreneurs and not like students in our college. They take calculated risks and trust us,” they say in unison. Another advantage is starting YES from Level 1 which provides a solid foundation and helps set the bar high, they echo.

At 81, Howick lawn bowler Vern Patterson is a winner despite suffering a severe stroke in 2000 that put him in hospital for three months and on rehabilitation for a year. Last Friday the popular Vern’s happy grin grew wider when he and second-year rookie Warren Williams were the C Green winners of the Howick Bowling Club’s Howick and Pakuranga Times sponsored 2x4x2 pairs. He has come a long way since achieving his ambition of walking unaided out of hospital 17 years ago and having a hot drink in his left paralysed hand “without scalding myself.” Vern admits bowls success has not come as easily as the raffle prizes he once regularly

ACCIDENT
Woman bashed at home in Dannemora ■■By Therese Henkin
A
woman has been assaulted in her Dannemora home after she walked in on a burglar. The victim, who wishes only to be known as Mrs K, arrived home early last week to find an intruder rummaging through her belongings in her home on Chapel Road. The mother and wife suffered bruising and a concussion after being punched in the head by the intruder when he turned on her as she was yelling for help. “I don’t feel safe in my own home after this,” she says. “It was terrifying. At first I
thought I saw him holding a gun and when he came towards me I thought, ‘he’s going to shoot me’.” She says she arrived home to find the internal access door between her garage and lounge wide open, despite having closed the door before she left the house that morning. “I knew something was wrong before I even saw the man running from my lounge to the kitchen,” she says. Mrs K says she started calling for help, knowing the intruder had seen her. “Suddenly he came towards me, pushed me into the car and punched me in my face three times.
I just blanked out and collapsed.” She called the police no more than five minutes after the assault which took place around 1pm on Monday October 30, she says. Mrs K says the intruder was a middle-aged man of mixed European and Maori or Pacific decent, dark hair and was wearing a tidy white t-shirt and shorts. Mrs K says he was driving a Volkswagen silver hatchback. Police responded to the incident and say the matter is currently under investigation by the Tactical Crime Unit. Mrs K is urging residents to be careful and be on the lookout for suspicious activity in the area.

Countdown to Santa Parade
■■By Nick Krause
The Howick Santa Parade is just little over three weeks away and elves are working busily putting the final touches to the Christmas floats and costumes. The annual parade, which attracts thousands in what is one the largest Christmas parades in the country, will see the main street turned over to local clubs and groups for an afternoon of festive fun. Organiser Emma Smith of Times Newspapers said excitement is mounting as the big day draws near. “Float registrations are coming in thick and fast,” she said. “It’s gearing up to be another wonderful parade. Registrations are now open and any local schools, groups or businesses can go to our website www.howicksantaparade.co.nz to download entry forms.” She is confident the parade will attract another strong showing of artistry and talent. “Last year we had more than 50 groups take part which was our biggest parade ever,” she said. “Let’s hope we can smash that record this year.” ➤➤When: Sunday, December 3At: Parade starts at 2.30pm Where: Picton Street, Howick
A local school principal is “disappointed” with a national news story published online suggesting the school allegedly told students they couldn’t sit their NCEA exams if voluntary school fees weren’t paid. Botany Downs Secondary School told the Times a Stuff news story’s headline was incorrect as the issue in the spotlight is subject fees and not voluntary school donations at all. The news site reported that a mother was fuming after her daughter arrived home saying she wouldn’t be sitting her NCEA exams unless her school donations were paid. However school principal Karen Brinsden said the misunderstanding has arisen because the school had not effectively communicated when the NZQA admission slips would be available. “The theme of school donation was never raised by any party, parent and or journalist. “It was disappointing the story title chosen by the (stuff.co.nz) journalist as it was misleading to the public,” she said. At the end of each of the senior awards ceremonies, she explained those students who had completed their clearance process (i.e. outstanding library books, sports uniform and or subject fees) were issued with their NZQA examination admission slip and were able to go on study leave. “While we had communicated to both parents and students over the preceding weeks the clearance process and informed them of outstanding items,

we had inadvertently omitted to communicate that NZQA admission slips would be issued at a set date and time,” Brinsden said. “Students who had yet to complete the process were asked to return over the coming days to do so. We have never withheld an admission slip.” Students are able to download them from the NZQA website and have them authorised by the Principal’s Nominee at school. “We sent a communication out to all parents on Friday morning and apologised for any misunderstanding this may have caused,” Brinsden said. “I would like to thank parents for the positive way they engage with the school and for their ongoing support of the college. “ Meanwhile NZQA’s deputy chief executive assessment division Kristine Kilkelly confirmed to the Times it had spoken to the college about this issue. “The school regretted any confusion their administrative processes have caused and confirmed all students would be receiving their admission slips,” she said. Students can also access their learner login on the NZQA website to print their admission slip for NCEA examinations. NZQA has advised the school to review the way it communicates on these issues in future. “All students registered in NCEA are able to sit their exams and we are concerned when we hear a school may be preventing entry to examinations until charges, fees or voluntary donations are paid,” Kilkelly said.

junior Kiwi BMX team headed by a local rider Sacha Earnest has beaten the Aussies in the latest leg of the Mighty Elevens BMX trans-Tasman Competition to tie the series. Mountain Raiders BMX rider Sacha has captained the New Zealand BMX Mighty Elevens Girls team twice this year. The Mighty Elevens comprise the four fastest New Zealand and Australian 11-year old boys and girls. The first test in Sydney, the
girls lost to the Australians. The trans-Tasman test is an event quite unlike normal BMX racing. This is the only time the kids are allowed to work as a team to collect points for their team Sacha, a three-time age group World Championship title holder, is dedicated to BMX. This year her goal was to represent NZ in the BMX Mighty Elevens trans-Tasman test. This biannual event has been going on since the mid 1980s. In the second test at Labour
weekend in Whangarei, as captain Sacha had to lead from the front to block and sweep the Australian girls to allow the Kiwi girls a chance to get ahead and gather points for the team. It is an extremely tough competition both physically and mentally to win. Team coach Clive Telford, the mastermind behind the race tactics, relied heavily on Earnest to execute the race plan. Sacha rode her heart out and put her body on the line even when she knew she was being targeted. At the end of
the five team races over two days, Sacha was able to lead the team to victory. The other riders in the Mighty Eleven NZ Girls Test Team were Greer Hall (Cambridge), Jaydah Lees (Tauranga) and Kiera Waite (Tauranga) who was a last minute replacement when Nikita Boyle (North Harbour) broke her arm the week before. The NZ Mighty Elevens Boys team captained by Mountain Raiders’ Lewis Atkinson were unable to secure victory over the Aussies.
Ormiston Community Baptist Church is finalising funding details for a community-oriented building which can be used by the fast-expanding multicultural communities in Flat Bush. To be located on a centrally located vacant piece of land at 25 Frank Bunce Grove, Chapel Road, opposite Barry Curtis Park, the proposed Community Lounge will accommodate groups from the 20-200. The final design for application of building consent is underway. Mike Carter one of the Church members and a registered valuer by profession says that the area of the Community Lounge sitting across the Skate Park will be around 360 meters. “It can be used by community groups during week days,” he says. Currently, the Eastview Baptist Church on Chapel Road next to Botany Downs Secondary College is booked by around 24 community groups including Probus, Korean and Chinese groups, Plunket and Kumon. “Which is to say there is a huge requirement for a growing multicultural community in Flat Bush to have a place where they can meet. We are looking for expressions of interest from groups in community who would like to use and rent the building during the week and in the evenings,” he says. The council-owned Ormiston Activity Facility in the same vicinity has to be booked online. “Though it has a good car park, it can accommodate only around 20 people and residents in the area have been looking for bigger space that can accommodate larger groups,” says Mr Carter. “And there’s hasn’t been much progress with the Ormiston Community Centre either. “We’re anticipating interest for seniors, all ethnic groups, clubs, education, health groups and young people. We are aware of the severe shortage of good quality community buildings in Flat Bush area. ➤➤Contact Mike Carter for more details at 0272422151, or email: makie@mjcarter.co.nz

Iconic clock overhaul
Gentle Exercise Class
H
owickians who like a good chime will be pleased to know that the Rices Mall solar-powered clock on Picton Street has recently undergone a major overhaul, just like Big Ben in London. Well not quite – Big Ben will take four years to service and overhaul and the Howick clock not quite so long! Installed in 1990 by Russ Rice, this quality Seiko clock was probably then the only one of its kind in New Zealand. With a choice of two chimes, West Minister (currently playing) and Ave Marie, the chimes can be heard four times each day at 8am, midday, 4pm and 8pm to the delight of the shoppers, retailers and visitors to the Village.

he oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protect
their assets for their children and for their future.” Local businesses recognise this long-standing legal practice as somewhere they can look to for reliable advice when complications arise from business activities such as taxation, trusts and leasing premises. We also offer all-encompassing law services that include; trust, wills, estates, matrimonial property and residential and commercial conveyancing. The practice has recently opened a new office at Beachlands in the Pohutukawa Coast Shopping Centre (behind Countdown) in order to provide conve-
niently located legal services for both Maraetai and Beachlands communities. Barrister and Solicitor, Michelle Donovan BA, LLB (Hons) has joined the practice after many years’ experience in Public Law and is based at the Beachlands office. Legal Executives, Leonie Hogg (Beachlands) and Michelle Bailey (Howick) have more than 20 years experience each in the legal arena also and together with the stellar support from our administration staff, the legal practice is well known for its invaluable advice and services to the community. There is virtually nothing these excellent legal experts cannot do or resolve; as James says: “There is no substitute for experience.” James Gavin Donovan Solicitors 22 Picton Street, Howick. Education
At the Oscars in Beachlands Hollywood came to Beachlands on Saturday night
I
t was the night when glamorous stars descended on Beachlands. Guests arrived in their best ensembles for ‘A night in Hollywood’ and were photographed by paparazzi on the red carpet! The dress code was Hollywood, old or new, glam or gangster. The Beachlands School Fundraising Auction was an evening of mystery envelopes, silent auction and live auction, dining, dancing, music and pure glamour. Money raised from the auction will be used to boost Beachlands School’s outdoor education resources, specifically an all-weather surface for use through the year, and a cycle way. The cycle way is a student-led initiative. The cycle track that would allow students to walk, run, scooter and cycle, on school grounds, all year round. A contribution from the fundraising would be made to the design and development of this project. Formosa Golf Resort donated the use of its resort for the night and pulled out all stops to make the night a glittering success. Formosa announced it will donate
10 per cent of new 2017/18 annual golf subscriptions to the Beachlands School PTA. Subscriptions need to be signed before December 3, 2017.Mike Greer Homes was the major sponsor of the event, providing a $5000 furniture and appliance package, goodie bags and even a children’s colouring competition complete with familyfocused prizes. The fast-paced and competitive live auction was run by Ray White Beachlands. Toni Duncan, chair of the fundraising committee, credited the generous support of businesses who donated auction items in making the night a success. Financially, the evening exceeded expectations and Anthony NobelCampbell, the school’s principal, explained that the funds raised will be used to enrich the outdoor education facility at Beachlands School.

Cookies with a taste of Christmas magic ■ BY THERESE HENKIN
T
he Cookie Time Christmas cookie sellers hit the streets this week and Eastern Beach resident Sarah Accorsi is with them, cookie buckets in tow. The first time cookie seller says she is thrilled to be getting out in the community for a good cause. “The best part is bringing a little bit of Christmas magic to people and organisations,” she says. Accorsi will spend the next seven weeks visiting businesses and locals in the east Tamaki area to raise money for charity through cookie sales. Accorsi says she is most excited to raise awareness for Cookie Time’s hero charity, The Blind Foundation of New Zealand. “I didn’t know much about the Blind Foundation to start with,” Sarah says. “They aren’t a big charity, and not many people know how to support them so it’s great to be able to bring a little bit of awareness to the foundation.” This year $200,000 of the money raised will go towards

charities supported by the Cookie Time Charitable Trust and a further $50,000 will go the Blind Foundation of New Zealand. Accorsi says not only is she excited to learn valuable skills on how to run her own business, she is thrilled to be part of raising funds for those who need it. “There are people out there
facing challenges we may not even realise or know anything about and if we have the ability to help out, big or small, we should,” she says. “There are so many aspects of the Christmas cookies campaign that motivate us all to hit the streets and sell as many buckets as we can.”
Disputes tribunal rule We are fortunate in New Zealand to be one of the few countries in the world to have an effective Dispute Tribunal, which is basically a small claims court. Set up some years ago by Government to provide a way to resolve disputes without the necessity to use a lawyer and the exorbitant legal costs which might then follow. It also prevents the opposing party who might for example be a major retailer from using all their resources against the minor party to the dispute. The tribunal can hear most complaints where there is a dispute totalling in value up to $15,000 or $20.000 if both parties agree. What sort of disputes/ complaints does it cover? For example, disputes with your neighbour, if work has been done improperly by a tradesperson; incorrect goods have been supplied, disagreements about fees/ costs charged. If you have online access please search the CAB website on which you will find a more detailed overview of the types of claims the Tribunal can handle. Some claims which do not fall within their jurisdiction are care of children wills, and ownership of land. Using the Tribunal is a much cheaper option and far less formal than going to court; and you can attend with a support person if necessary, but they cannot speak on your behalf, the same conditions also apply to the other party in the dispute. Both sides present their arguments to the referee with the support of witnesses who have to wait outside until called upon. The referee will give guidance and ask appropriate questions, and then when satisfied with arguments presented, a ruling will be made which is binding on both parties. In a perfect world that would be the end of it, both parties would honour
the ruling of the referee. But at times that does not happen and then if either party considers they have been unfairly treated there are avenues to continue appealing the decision made, up to the Supreme Court at the most extreme. This is only a very brief overview and although it may seem a bit daunting, basically it is a fairly streamlined process. If you need assistance at any stage phone or visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau and our trained volunteers will be able to explain the straightforward process required to lodge a claim either online or by application form. Alternatively you can visit the CAB website or the Dispute Tribunal website which explains step by step, how to lodge a claim, what to bring to the hearing and how to prepare yourself when attending with all the parties concerned. If there are other problems concerning you that are not related to this topic, please visit, phone or email your local Citizens Advice Bureau where our Bureau Interviewers are here to provide guidance, support and options to assist you. ➤ Solutions is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Pakuranga, Phone 576 8331 and Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271 5382 or phone 0800 267 222 for free, confidential and informative help.

POLITICS
Mayor-turned-MP pops in for visit ■ BY FARIDA MASTER Lawrence Yule, National MP of Tukituki electorate, was in Botany recently to share his experiences with the SuperBlues in the area at the invitation of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. After wearing the mayoral chains for 15 years, Mr Yule said he is excited about being a newbie in Parliament at the same time as 25-year-old MP for Pakuranga Simeon Brown. Mr Yule who visited the Times office with Mr Ross and Mr Brown said: “Though I would have preferred to be in government to learn the system, I am still incredibly optimistic about advocating issues that affect local government.” The former mayor of Hastings District and President of Local Government New Zealand said that he honestly
believes “most of the challenges can be solved”. He should know as he was under a lot of pressure due to the gastro outbreak caused by Havelock North’s town water supply. Mr Yule says a lot more work need to be done as there is young water coming up in Napier and Hastings which is a huge risk and has a lot of ramifications. The father of four adult children says he is “very impressed with the discipline and the high level of professionalism of the National Party. “I have always been of the opinion that the government has no money. It is our money and you and I need to know where and how our money is being spent.” “I look forward to holding the Left wing government to account”.
roject ‘Undercover’ is a fashion show that will showcase police staff and their hidden talents whilst raising funds for Lifeline through works of sewing, wearable art, body paint, hair dressing and make up with jaw dropping performances on stage. The evening will involve collections from five different designers, a body artist, and performers from various roles within Police. This event is being organised by off-duty police staff in their own time, with the support of their employer, New Zealand Police. As this is a charity event with 100 per cent of the profits going to Lifeline Aotearoa, we are seeking charitable donations from people and organisations who would like to contribute to this amazing counselling and support service. “Any contribution you are able to make is greatly appreciated,” organiser Gloria Sharma said. “We are looking for donations such as Make Up kits to help with models make up on the night. imes Newspapers has kindly offered me the opportunity to write a regular column in their paper, alternating with my friend and colleague in Botany, Jami-Lee Ross, and I wanted to use my first one as an opportunity to thank the people of Pakuranga for electing me as their new Member of Parliament. It is a great honour and privilege to have been elected to represent you, and one of my biggest priorities as the new MP is to ensure that the people who live here and that I represent in Parliament know who I am and how to reach me. Since the election, I’ve been very busy getting my feet under the desk and stuck into the role and my new responsibilities. My primary obligation is to my constituents, and to ensure that you receive assistance with a range of issues when you’re having difficulty resolving it on your own. This can be about almost anything, from an immigration matter, to a WINZ problem, to trouble with ACC, or even just to raise your concerns with a local or national issue. One of the jobs I’ve been focused on in my first couple of weeks is getting my new office open, and on making sure you can find me. ‘Good Kiwi comedy’ ahead ■■By Kelly Teed Audiences heading along to Howick Little Theatre’s final play for the year this week can expect a night full of laughter. Book Ends, written by Kiwi playwright Roger Hall and directed by Susanne Dell is set in Devonport around six retired men who meet weekly for their book club and lament how life and times have changed with the introduction of technology. Director Susanne Dell says Book Ends is a “classic Kiwi comedy” that is relatable very well written. “When I read the script, I thought this is typical NZ – easy to direct in the
fact it’s within our everyday life. “It’s a nice New Zealand comedy [and] the characters just leapt off the page.” She says while she was initially worried about casting the play with six male characters in their 60s, they managed to finalise casting within a week and it “all came together extremely well”. Dell says audiences can expect a “good night out with good Kiwi comedy written by an iconic writer”. ➤➤Playwright Roger Hall will be at the Sunday Matinee on 12 November at 2pm for a Q&A session following the play.

My daughter or death camp? REVIEW Let me go
➤➤Genre: Drama ➤➤Directed by: Polly Steele ➤➤Reviewed by: Kelly Teed ➤➤Times rating: HHH If you’re a parent feeling like you’ve been doing a slightly less than stellar job as of late, you can usually take comfort in the fact that it could always be worse. You might have been a bit impatient, you might have dropped the ball on a few occasions and you might feel like you’ll never figure out parenting but chances are you haven’t abandoned your four-year-old daughter in order to become a guard at the infamous Auschwitz death camp. Such is the story of Helga Schneider, a German woman whose mother did just that and whose experience Let Me Go is loosely based on. Let Me Go follows Helga (Juliet Stevenson) as she deals with the longstanding effects of her moth-
er’s abandonment of 1941. Set in the year 2000, the film also details the effects of this abandonment on Helga’s daughter, Beth (Jodhi May) and granddaughter, Emily (Lucy Boynton), who up until this point had remained blissfully unaware of the life history of their (great) grandmother Traudi (Karin Bertling), who they believe to be dead. When Helga receives a letter telling her that Traudi is close to death, Helga shares the truth with Emily who then volunteers to accompany her to Vienna to meet
her dying great-grandmother. While the film itself struggled to capture and hold my attention, I was drawn in by some strong acting performances – of Juliet Stevenson and Karin Bertling in particular. The reluctance of Stevenson’s character to acknowledge her mother as that and Bertling’s character’s eventual desperation for her daughter to do so showed the emotional scars of Traudi’s desertion, even nearly 60 years on, and not just on Helga, but her daughter and granddaughter too.

Grace and Katie love to draw. Grace loves everything to be organised and neat, while Katie loves everything to be bright, bold and messy. When they want to draw a map of their home and street, the girls can’t agree on how it should be done so they each decide to create their own map. But that doesn’t work out
quite as well as they’d planned. Perhaps working together might be more fun after all! An imaginative exploration of individuality, sisterhood, creativity and appreciating each other’s strengths. ➤➤Encourages kids to express their creativity and realise that there is no right or wrong way to be an artist. ➤➤The topic of map making is woven throughout the story, making this a valuable resource to explore visual literacy. ➤➤Touches on the subject of twins/multiples in a way that emphasises each girl’s individual strengths.

KiwiBuild should be means tested
Engineered for very high wind zones
The announcement by Phil Twyford that KiwiBuild houses won’t be means tested is an expensive middle-class bribe, according to the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union. Joe Ascroft, economic advisor at the Taxpayers’ Union said: “The aim of KiwiBuild is to provide ‘affordable housing’ but as long as you haven’t owned a home before, you will be eligible, irrespective of your income.” “Young doctors and lawyers will be thrilled to start their property portfolios with a large subsidy from taxpayers, but it’s not particularly efficient social spending. The Minister should reconsider his proposal, and income test KiwiBuild applicants so resources go to those who most need it.”

hink tank the New Zealand Initiative has welcomed Phil Twyford’s approach to Auckland’s growth. Since becoming the Housing and Transport Minister, Mr Twyford has underlined his intention to simplify planning rules, abolish the rural urban boundary, let Auckland grow up and out, and move towards road pricing,” NZI said. Commenting on Phil Twyford’s statements, the initiative’s executive director Dr Oliver Hartwich said: “The appointment of Phil Twyford as Housing and Transport Minister in the Labour-led government is a breath of fresh air. “It is great that these two portfolios are held by the same person because we cannot solve the housing crisis without addressing transport – and we cannot solve our transport problems without fixing the housing market. “Phil Twyford is absolutely right that planning rules need to change. “National talked about it for years and did little. We look forward to seeing more action from the new Minister.” He said Auckland needed to embrace its growth potential or it would choke under its own success. “Minister Twyford has correctly

Amazing Granite Benchtop adds wow factor A large titanium gold honed granite bench is the piece de resistance in a very dramatic kitchen designed by Jag Kitchens for Gaye and Nigel Powell of Mission Bay. The beautiful eye-catching bench at the heart of this contemporary kitchen has spectacular veining and a large waterfall end. The new kitchen includes cabinetry in Arctic Grey with accents of Carbon and has black recessed handles. It has a bold bronze light fitting (with an embossed white interior on the shade) centered over the sink. The space is enhanced by the rich colour of the existing wooden floors. The Powells moved into the seven-year-old home just over a year ago and have set about putting their stamp on the property with a collection of stylish furniture (antique and modern blended beautifully), colourful art pieces and quality oriental rugs. The Powells’ first major change has been to update the kitchen and adjoining laundry. “The original kitchen was all very white and had no personality, while the laundry didn’t suit us
Kitchen designed by Megan Dyer (top left) for Gaye (top right) and Nigel Powell.
the way it had been designed,” Gaye explains. On discovering that that Jag Kitchens also work on laundry renovations, she collaborated closely with Jag designer, Megan Dyer, to make a workable plan for both the areas. A piece of the same stunning granite used in the kitchen was used in the laundry as well. The cabinetry is the same Arctic Grey as the kitchen, but with some white accents to create a lighter look. “Before the laundry was a space dominated by dark cupboards, it now feels lighter and is so much easier to use. I also have a favourite feature – a hanging rail to hang shirts on,” Gaye adds. She believes these two
renovated rooms are not only more functional than they previously were— but also flow better and fit in more with the character of their vibrant home. “In the kitchen, we have the benchtop extended right into the windowsill area – making the benchtop deeper and more streamlined. This was a slightly tricky job with the granite, but works well. It’s great to work at the bench and enjoy a nice view into the garden at the same time.”
Times photos Wayne Martin
“The whole project went very well, Megan worked very hard at it and the result is absolutely perfect,” she adds. And designer, Megan, is also delighted with the outcome and enjoyed working with the Powells on the project. In the new kitchen, all modern appliances have been used. The fridge is a double door icemaker and the oven tower includes a double oven with a built-in microwave.
The rangehood is a super quiet model with a remote mounted motor and there is an induction cooktop. The kitchen also has spaces for separate wine and beer fridges on the outer side of the peninsula bar. Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and have their own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a stateof-the-art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.
Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

Market unfazed by political change Despite the number of homes on the Auckland residential property market increasing to their highest number in more than five years in October, the average and median selling prices for the month remained firmly fixed. The average selling price for October at $910,537 was down 0.9 per cent on the average price for the previous three months while the median price at $830,000 was the same as the average median price for the previous three months. “The Auckland housing market has been unfazed by the political change that has occurred,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. “There was definitely downward pressure on prices, and this can be seen in the small variations in October’s prices when compared with the average and median prices for September, and October last year. “However, when looked at within the bigger picture of the last three months, the market has not changed with prices remaining stable. “There has been no panic selling, any hopes of post election price increases have evaporated, the new Government has done no more than confirm its pre-election commitments and buyers are still being cautious making purchase decisions.
“The biggest market change post election is that new listings at 1733 for October have lifted substantially, and was the highest since May. “Sales numbers during the month remained subdued, and at 634 were at their lowest since February, and were the lowest in an October for seven years. The longer than normal time lag between election night and the formation of the new Government contributed to sales numbers remaining low during the month. “The combination of high listings and low sales saw the number of listings at month end reaching 4451, the highest it has been for more than 5 years. “The market is now well set for an active run in to year end. “Clarity is returning, and we have now entered what is traditionally the strongest sales period of the year.” During October , 60 properties, or 9.7 per cent of all properties, sold for under $500,000 while 225, or a third, sold for under $750,000. “This was a similar number (211) to those that sold for more than $1 million. “Rural and lifestyle sales activity to the north and south of Auckland mirrored what occurred within the city limits. Buyer interest was strong but cautious, and new listings increased.”

The property market historically follows a cyclic trend.
our homes today
Slump in homes for sale over decade I
n October 2007, some 47,958 homes were listed for sale in New Zealand on realestate. co.nz, the country’s largest property listing site. Ten years on, the total numbers of homes listed has slumped to 24,307 (October 2017). “The property market historically follows a cyclic trend, and this past decade has seen a steady increase in asking prices while the total stock for sale continues to fall,” said realestate. co.nz spokesperson, Vanessa Taylor. “This is inspiring many Kiwis to think outside the square when it comes to letting go of the quarter acre dream, and recreating the notion of what makes a home,” she says. “In October 2007, we were months away from entering the period of the global financial crisis. New Zealand was hit, albeit relatively lightly, she said, but it was a period when lending was tight, house values dropped and new housing construction fell dramatically. “The GFC hangover meant it took years for the property market to recover,” said Taylor.
“Recently, as more Kiwis started to return to New Zealand permanently, along with the number of migrants from other countries, New Zealand found itself behind the eight ball when it came to sufficient housing numbers.” It’s only in the last three years that the fall in available property for sale has been quite so significant. In October 2014, total housing stock sat at 39,917, compared to 24,307 in October 2017, almost a 40 per cent fall. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that home ownership is out of reach. “There is more creative thinking coming into our housing vernacular, such as the Tiny House movement, co-housing with a central hub, as well as apartment and duplex options,” Taylor said. “The exciting thing is that as we move through to the next property cycle, we will have more options to suit our lifestyles, much like other large metropolitan cities across the world.” New property listings in October 2017 down 8.4 per cent Real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that new property listings were down 8.4 per
cent in October compared with the same month in 2016, with 10,778 homes newly listed for sale across the country. “This is not a surprise. We have had a challenging winter and that dominated decisions, because people always want to show their homes in the best light. “When there’s rain, wind and cool temperatures, prospective buyers tend not to venture out as much” says Vanessa. “We also had an election with property as a significant focus, so it’s no surprise people would wait to see the outcomes.” Every region in the North Island experienced a fall in new listings, with the exception of the Hawkes Bay which was up by 3.6 per cent compared to October 2016. Auckland, which by its sheer size can impact the overall market nationally, experienced a 9.3 per cent fall in new listings. The 3,705 new listings were minimal in a market of this size. In the South Island, Nelson registered the highest number of new listings for October compared to the same month in 2016, with 235 new listings.

Tonga pose genuine threat in Rugby League World Cup I
nspired by their raucous fans, Tonga promise to give the Kiwis a World Cup rugby league battle royal in Hamilton on Saturday night but the hosts also possess some lethal weapons of their own. Key amongst them on the evidence of the Kiwis 74-6 thrashing of Scotland is born again Te Maire Martin and 21-year-old test newcomers Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Addin Fonua-Blake who have the potential to become Kiwi greats. Martin, 22, is the 87kg standoff half who was dumped by the Panthers as Nathan Cleary’s halves partner and relegated to the NSW Cup before being snapped up mid-year by the North Queensland Cowboys for a reported bargain $A50,000 ($55,370). Having replaced severely injured legend Jonathan Thurston to partner Michael Morgan, Martin learned a lot from both and played his part in the Cowboys fairy tale charge to the grand NRL final where they bowed out to the mighty Melbourne Storm. A beautifully balanced, deceptively illusive player, the coolheaded Martin capped a classy

performance with three tries against the Scots, the same as right wing Peta Hiku. Repeating that performance against the fiery Tongans poses a far more severe test because the Pacific Islanders showed they too have the smarts to go with the power they demonstrated in their thrilling 32-18 triumph over brave Samoa compared with the Kiwis 38-8 win over the same side. Never have I seen a happier, flag-waving crowd create such a wonderful atmosphere at a New Zealand event of any kind as both teams provided an epic battle in Hamilton that celebrated the massive contribution Pacific Islanders have brought to sport. A shame, therefore, that some fans should engage in fights off the field after their teams showed
so much controlled fury and respect on it. While Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo had a strong game, Sio Siua Taukeaho was the outstanding performer in a powerful Tongan pack when he accumulated an incredible 250 metres. Having received few chances to demonstrate their worth in the halves for the NZ Warriors, it was pleasing to see how well Ata Hingano and Tui Lolohea adapted to test footy with the former particularly outstanding, With Fonua-Blake hitting the scales at the same 118kg as the late Jonah Lomu and Solomona 6kg heavier, the Kiwis also have muscle up front to meet the challenge, especially when one adds the pace and power of the 111kg Martin Taupau.
The top of the table clash between Marie Raos Ray White and Parnell premier men’s side ended in a disappointing draw because the loss of the first day’s play made achieving a result virtually impossible. Parnell resumed from its overnight score of 20/1 and made a mandatory declaration after 52 overs at 225/5. Andrew Lane top scored with 94 and McGregor -Sumpter chimed in with 69. Danru Ferns 2/47, Adam Jones 2/46 and Bill Walsh 1/31 shared the wickets. The home side had 51 overs to score 226 and fell short at 188/8 when the end of play was called. After a steady start with Howick Pakuranga losing wickets at 39 and 87, fortunes swung to both teams at various times but a chasing team always needs to take a few risks and with four overs to go Howick put up the shutters with Ferns and Rudi Botadra batting through to stumps to ensure a comfortable draw. Andrew Morrison continued his run of golden form with 50 with Skipper Bill Walsh and new recruit Cameron Neal 27 all scored runs but nobody was able to go on and put together the big score needed to win the match. Life doesn’t get any easier for the Premiers next week when they meet top of the table University at Colin Maiden Park. ➤➤Matches this week: Marie Raos Premier Reserves vs Eden Roskill at Lloyd Elsmore Park; Howick New World Premier Women vs Waitakere University at Lloyd Elsmore Park

With Ivan Agnew
Add the massive defensive contribution from Simon Mannering and it’s a strong pack which is spoilt for choice at hooker with Thomas Leuluai, Danny Li and Elijah Taylor to choose from. With Roger Tuivasa-Sheck starring against Scotland and Martin and Dean Whare’s slick passing offering scoring opportunities for those outside them, the improved backline cohesion provides special satisfaction. If only the Warriors could follow suit. Meanwhile the All Blacks’ match against the Barbarians at Twickenham was supposed to provide a platform for the up and comers to show they were ready for test rugby. Instead it was two flankers, one a former All Black and the other a Johannesburg Lion who hasn’t won Springbok selection, who captured the spotlight. Steven Luatua, with two long runs from intercepts, had a rousing first half which no current All Black could match, while the speedy Kwagga Smith was the star of the second. – Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

APC attracts another star name T
he Australian Production Cars will welcome Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner to its ranks for its 2017 season finale at Wakefield Park across November 18 and 19. Heimgartner – who has impressed recently as a ‘super sub’ for Supercars team Brad Jones Racing at the Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600 as well as for GT outfit Craft Bamboo Racing – will co-drive with Dunlop Super 2 Series star Nathan Morcom in the Team DPO Ford Focus RS. Morcom is currently one of four drivers in the hunt for the outright and Class A1 titles, alongside Bob Pearson and brothers Grant and Iain Sherrin. Earlier in the year, Morcom had the services of Supercars star Chaz Mostert as co-driver, however Mostert is otherwise committed for the November 18-19 weekend. “Andre is such a talent and we were very impressed with his Supercars efforts at Bathurst and the Gold Coast – super late call-ups didn’t stop him from putting in great performances and his race-leading efforts on the Gold Coast by up to 20 seconds on the rest of the field in particular certainly got our attention,” Team DPO team manager
The Team DPO Ford Focus RS in action. Andre Haimgartner will be pat of the team for the finale in a little over a week. Photo Richard Johnston
Scott Fulcher said. “When we knew Chaz couldn’t make it to Wakefield, we knew we had to find someone who could jump in and do a great job. After his amazing ‘super sub’ appearances in October, Andre made total sense and we were very pleased when he agreed to come on board with us for the final round of the APC season.” Heimgartner, who is Melbournebased, has just returned from New Zealand, where he followed up his maiden Supercars podium result of the Gold Coast with a drive in the BNT V8s at Pukekohe Raceway. “The amount of track time on offer in the Australian Production Cars is really impressive, we are talking hours and hours of racing plus practice and qualifying time at eve-
ry event on their calendar,” Heimgartner said. “Nathan and Chaz have done a really good job so far and while Chaz won’t be in contention for the title by virtue of missing Wakefield, Nathan will be and so I am determined to do the best job I can to help him bring it home. “Team DPO is a great outfit and I have heard good things about the Focus – I can’t wait to see what we can do around Wakefield Park later this month. ”The Australian Production Cars’ final round of 2017 will hit Wakefield Park Raceway on November 18 and 19. Two 300km races will be held, one on each day, with live streaming to cover all the action on both days.
Debut shot for Papalii as Blues mix it up The Blues have secured some exciting new additions to boost a settled core of proven performers for their 2018 Investec Super Rugby Championship campaign. Ten current or former All Blacks are joined by some impressive 2017 Blues players to form the nucleus of the side for 2018. Three with local connections – including one new name - make the side - TJ Faiane and newcomer Dalton Papalii from Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Matt Duffie, formerly of Saint Kentigern College (Papalii’s old school as well), is in the side again. Duffie was just named in the All Blacks side to tour France, Scotland and Wales at the end of the season. The Blues have also rewarded a number of players who impressed week-in, week-out in the Mitre 10 Cup, and helped the likes of North Harbour, Northland, Canterbury, Tasman and Taranaki to successful seasons. They have also recognised some exception young players who have emerged through the Blues age group pathway and retained them in the region. Head Coach Tana Umaga said he is pleased with the balance in the squad with proven experience, strong performers this year and some exciting young players.

“We have a settled core of All Blacks and experienced Super Rugby players as our nucleus,” Umaga said. “We’ve seen a number of our 2017 team produce excellent form in the Mitre 10 Cup and others who have played well to earn their opportunity. “At the same time we are always looking ahead, especially to young guys who have come through our programmes or want to come back to Auckland and want to play for the Blues. “We have to work harder than we have before, but above all else have players wanting to progress both on and off the field.” The squad get together from the end of November with the All Blacks returning later in January. The 2018 Blues squad is: Hookers: Leni Apisai, Matt Moulds, James Parsons. Front row: Alex Hodgman, Sione Mafileo, Pauliasi Manu, Isaac Salmon, Mike Tamoaieta, Ofa Tuungafasi. Locks: Gerard Cowley-Tuioti, Josh Goodhue, Scott Scrafton, Patrick Tuipulotu, Jimmy Tupou. Loose forwards: Blake Gibson, Akira Ioane, Jerome Kaino, Dalton Papalii, Glenn Preston, Kara Pryor, Murphy Taramai. Halfbacks: Sam Nock, Augustine Puli, Jonathan Ruru. First Five: Otere Black/Daniel Kirkpatrick, Bryn Gatland, Stephen Perofeta. Midfield: Matt Johnson, George Moala, Tamati Tua, TJ Faiane, Sonny Bill Williams. Outside backs: Caleb Clarke, Michael Collins, Matt Duffie, Rieko Ioane, Melanie Nanai, Jordan Trainor.
