here were around a 100 get-togethers hosted during the Labour Weekend as the Baha’i community welcomed people into their homes to mark the 200th birth anniversary of prophet Bahá’u’lláh— a Persian nobleman born in Tehran in 1817. Locally and internationally, Baha’i members are organising a string of events over the next month to invite the public to learn more about their world view of peace, oneness of humanity and worldwide unity. “It’s heart-warming to see so much diversity in east Auckland,” said Behzad, as he and his wife Tahereh Eghdamian welcomed guests to their home in Flat Bush. Talking about a faith that accepts and appreciates diversity, he said, “The earth is our country and mankind its citizens. The mission of Baha’u’llah is to unify humankind and bring people from different cultures to live as one family, without prejudice, a family that works together to bring about transformational social change.” An award-winning PhD stu-

He described it as “an ancestor of the violin”. The musical performance was followed by grand Persian fare. Further down the road in the semi-rural area of Flat Bush

POLITICS

Can the Labour coalition last? N

ational party whip and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has raised questions as to whether a NZ First coalition with Labour and Green coalition can last.

Dysfunctional Government doesn’t hurt politicians, it hurts the economy, investment, growth, and opportunity says Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Photo Wayne Martin

“Already we have seen over the weekend the first disagreement where the Greens say they will legislate for the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary, but NZ First says they will block it,” Ross told the Times. “NZ First and the Greens do not make natural bedfellows, but I suspect they will work to paper over any cracks that form. “I hope they do hold it together

for the sake of the country. Dysfunctional Government doesn’t hurt politicians. It hurts the economy, investment, growth, and opportunity.”

Alan Papprill, Botany’s Labour Electorate Committee secretary, says there is no reason to doubt that the NZ First leader will work constructively in the Ardern Labour-led Government. Photo supplied

Meanwhile Alan Papprill, Botany’s Labour Electorate Committee secretary, said that based on evidence from previous Labour-led coalitions, there is no reason to doubt that the NZ First leader will work constructively in the Ardern Labour-led Government. “The mature manner in which the negotiations were conducted have

certainly ensured that there will be a close and cooperative working relationship between all the parties that will ensure that this is a government that will endure.” Speaking for the first time since NZ First leader Winston Peters’ decision last Thursday to support a Labour Party-led Government, Ross was deflated that the National Party would not be in Government. “It is naturally disappointing for us as MPs, but more disappointing for New Zealanders and those that supported National at the recent election,” he said, “Prime Minister Bill English won the support of 45 per cent of New Zealanders. In our local area, six in 10 voters chose National. The election’s outcome was more of an MMP result, rather than an election result, Ross said. “Winston Peters has now chosen to support a Labour/Green coalition. That is his right, but it will have come as a surprise to many. “But, I wish the incoming Labour/ Green/NZ First government good luck. Voters expect stability and growth from a government, and that will be their challenge.” Asked how much thought had been given by National to work with the Greens as coalition partners, Ross said he received a lot of public feedback suggesting the party should work with the Greens. “We tried. If the Green Party was

truly an environment party, it would position itself to work with either Labour or National, and they would ultimately get more gains for the environment that way,” he said. “National was very open to working with the Greens, however there was almost no interest from them.” And what did he think of Winston Peters and his decision? “It’s not so much what I think of him, it’s more a case of what his voters think of him,” said Ross. “We have always known that he can flip any which way. Whether his voters realised they were signing up for a Labour/ Green government, that has priorities like cannabis legalisation, is another story. “Whichever side of the Parliament I sit on, I am grateful for the support of 21,000 locals in Botany this year. This endorsement, with an increased vote, is hugely appreciated. I will continue working hard on their behalf.” ➤ Brown saddened by Winston’s decision Simeon Brown, the newlyappointed MP for Pakuranga, said he is disappointed with last week’s announcement that a Labour/NZ First/Green arrangement will form the new government. “I’m saddened by the decision made (last week), which means that even after winning the largest share of the vote in the 2017 election, National is unable to form a govern-

Winston Watch comes to an end After nearly a month of watching and waiting in anticipation, New Zealand has a Government Winston Peters announced his decision on Thursday evening to form a coalition with the New Zealand Labour Party, making Jacinda Ardern the youngest Prime Minister of New Zealand in 150 years.

Inside Cabinet will be: Jacinda Ardern, David Clark, Clare Curran, Kelvin Davis, Chris Hipkins, Iain LeesGalloway, Andrew Little, Nanaia Mahuta, Stuart Nash, Damien O’Connor, David Parker, Grant Robertson, Jenny Salesa, Carmel Sepuloni, Phil Twyford and Megan Woods. Outside Cabinet will be: Kris Faafoi, Peeni Henare, Willie Jackson, Aupito William Sio, Meka Whaitiri. ■ NZ First is expected to hold portfolios in economic development and an associate education role for Tracey Martin. ment,” said Brown. “I truly believed that the best way forward for New Zealand was to continue with a Bill English-led National government, and Pakuranga agreed, with 61.7 per cent of the party vote going towards National. I want to wish Jacinda Ardern and her new coalition all the best, as their success, is New Zealand’s success. “Regardless of who was going to be in charge, I am committed to being the best Member of Parliament I can be for the people of Pakuranga, and now more than ever I am looking forward to the next three years.”

SCAM

Beware of art scam ■ BY THERESE HENKIN A Howick resident is warning others to be on the lookout after she encountered an art scammer knocking on doors in the area. Early last week Rachel Fox opened her front door to an art salesperson who was selling what was claimed to be one-of-a-kind artworks. However Fox said the work wasn’t one-of-a-kind, but exactly the same as that which someone had tried to sell to her years before. Fox first saw the painting in 2013 when she read the Times article about art scammers who conned people into buying low quality artwork for more than $100.

Sale

“Tonight in Baird Street I had them come by again with the exact same artwork,” she says. Fox confronted the women about how the painting couldn’t be an original as someone had tried to sell her the same art work before, but says the seller wouldn’t back down. “She was so confident that she was doing nothing wrong selling the art for $140 and still claimed these pictures were originals,” she says. “It worries me that other people will be tricked into this.” Howick police became aware of the scams when at least two people were conned into buying art prints that were being mass produced in Asia in 2013.

Here are some snapshots she shares with the Times readers. “I was doing a seven-day, black and white Photos of your Life Facebook challenge which was just a bit of fun. Basically, people take seven pictures and post one each day, challenging someone else to do the same. I am often challenged by my sister in Australia.” Currently she has challenged Howick Local Board member John Spiller to bring some black and whites to the table. Watch this space.

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be incredibly scary and stressful for animals. As we head into Guy Fawkes night, here are some tips to make sure your furry friends are safe: • If possible, stay home - they’ll be less stressed with company. • Walk dogs before the fireworks start - this will help tire them out and hopefully put them to sleep. • ALWAYS keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off. • Close all windows and doors, block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and keeping noise to a minimum. • Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on. • If dogs start to look stressed, remain calm yourself remembering that as “pack leader” your dog looks for guidance from you. • If you have small pets that live outdoors, don’t forget to partly cover cages / pens and aviaries with blankets for sound proofing. • Take special care of elderly or nervous animals – speak to your veterinarian before Guy Fawkes about whether calming medication would be suitable. • Make sure your pet is microchipped, or has a collar on with up to date contact details in case they are panicked by the fireworks and escape.

Biggest duck race is back T

he Great Auckland Duck Race is back and this time with even more duck races, excitement and activities for all the family. Vector Wero Waterpark in Manukau will be awash with some of the best-dressed ducks that glue-guns and imagination can create on Sunday Nov 12th 9am-midday. This quackingly fun community event brought to you by the Rotary Clubs of Manurewa-Takanini and Remuera and sponsored by Ray White Manurewa, Takanini, Drury and Remuera, will see ducks racing down the thrilling whitewater rapids in four fast-paced races: Ray White race, School race, Business race and Everybody race. All schools are being offered a

free duck to decorate and race, with ducks available to businesses to dress in their brand colours of whatever they desire for $250. Three Donald Trump ducks raced last year alongside a Hilary Clinton, a biker, a cowboy riding bull and a prisoner so who knows will be there this year! Everyone can buy a $5 ticket to race a little duck in the Everybody race where 5,000 little yellow ducks will be let loose at the same time to create an amazing scene of yellow bobbing tails. Money raised will support Life Education and Harold the Giraffe’s visits to local schools teaching their preventative health messages to children age 5-13. Wendy Dunn from Howick Village Business Asso-

ciation shares “We are aware of the importance of community and education. The duck race was a wonderful idea and great opportunity for us to offer support whilst having fun by dressing our duck as Howick’s town crier. It even won us the BestDressed Business Duck which we were thrilled about”. Sarah Nuttall from Life Education Trust Counties Manukau says that they are thrilled to be involved as “It is great to see so many of the children we visit in local schools come along with their families and friends and have fun with support from local businesses who are contributing to the success of their growing community”. NZ Canoe Slalom aren’t letting

the ducks have all the fun so they will be competing against each other between the duck races and also demonstrate their skills on the open water by the many on-land activities which include a photobooth, bouncy castle, face-painting, duck-shooting gallery, cycle spin art and lots more. The very talented Manukau Youth Orchestra will be entertaining the crowd and may well supply some music to help the ducks swim faster. All the fabulously decorated ducks can be seen before the day on Facebook at ‘The Great Auckland Duck Race’ where votes will be cast and counted as to which is the bestdressed school and business duck. The winners will be presented on

Our eyelids have special glands called Meibomian glands which produce an important oil layer to prevent the evaporation of tears. When there is a dysfunction in these glands, this can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. This syndrome is also part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of many medications, or living in a dry or windy climate. People who have undergone cataract surgery, eye laser treatment or wear contact lenses may also be sufferers. Through a series of safe, noninvasive laser treatments, the Meibomian glands are stimulated to return to their normal function.

Frank and Ailsa celebrate 60 wonderful years ■■By Farida Master

T

he first time Frank Morris set eyes on Ailsa Hilliam, it was at a dance at Eden Roskill RSA, in the summer of 1955. A young and handsome Frank purposefully walked towards the girl who had caught his fancy to ask her for a dance. But at the last minute he changed his mind and asked the girl sitting beside her instead. Laughing, Ailsa recalls: “He wasn’t sure if I was a good dancer so he asked my friend.” However Frank couldn’t resist asking Ailsa for the next dance. The rest is history as the couple got married two years later on November 30, 1957. They read out a telegram that they received from one of their friends that read: ‘Been raining hope you have a little son later, best of luck’. Aisla clearly remembers her wedding dress had the best satin you could buy with a silk organza overlay and a guipure lace neckline. Their wedding was featured in the New Zealand Herald newspaper. They will be celebrating their Diamond Wedding Jubilee on November 25 at the Summerset by the Park Retirement Village, which they moved into six years ago. preserved black and white wedding picture album, Ailsa says how she had to leave her job at Ceylon Tea once she got married at the age of 21.

“In those days women were not allowed to work once we got married....though I think the rule changed, six months after our wedding,” she says.

The reason behind it, says Frank pointing to his stomach “is because women would soon have a big tummy. Also women took too long to do shopping during their lunch

break at work,” he laughs. Parents to three daughters (Wendy, Kristine and Raewyn) and son (Stephen); grandparents to 18 grandchildren and six great grand children, Frank says he has been a planner all his life and has been working hard at organising their 60th wedding anniversary, to which he’s invited 60 people. Having worked in fields that required planning and production, he takes pride in getting his three daughters getting married, in a span of 11 months in the same year. “That’s what they wanted, and none of them wanted a joint wedding.” Apart from being a keen dancer, Frank spent a lot of his time on the field, playing soccer and cricket while his wife was immersed in a world brush-stroked with colour and creativity. Ailsa is a talented landscape artist who exhibits her works of art all over New Zealand. Her painting adorns the wall of the retirement village as well. Ask her about Frank, the man she has spent her entire married life with and she smiles saying: “He’s a cool man, pretty cool, most of the time.” As for 82-year-old Frank, he simply looks into his wife’s eyes and says, “I love you.”

This is to show that every part is critically important for the success of a production,” she says. “Also, this collaborative effort is a great way to discover their passion and find out where their talent lies.” Practising four to five times a week plus weekends, she says that the kids are really excited about the production.

owick Local Board is bringing the area’s history in to the 21st Century with the launch of the Howick’s Heritage mobile app. The interactive walking app allows users to discover the history of Picton Street and explore some of the nearby landmarks through a range of historic images, interactive maps and audio commentary. The app also features a digital panorama on Stockade Hill using augmented reality technology.

“It’s an exciting development for us because it brings Howick’s rich history to life, opening it up to a whole new audience of both locals and visitors,” says Howick Local Board member its culture and heritage portfolio lead, Adele White. “In a world where people seem to live their lives through their phone or tablets, if we want to keep our heritage alive for future generations we need to move with the times so we hope people embrace it.” For those wanting more sto-

ries about the Howick area, with the app there is a link to download STQRY – another mobile device application that features more detailed history of the area across several topics. The project is one of several identified in the Howick Heritage Plan, adopted by the local board in 2016. “Already we’ve included the names of four soldiers with Howick connections to the war memorial on Stockade Hill, historical images are etched on to the glass panels of the new

■■By Therese Henkin Food trucks will be coming to east Auckland. The Howick Local Board has recently approved an application for an ice cream van to operate out of Lloyd Elsmore Park, Barry Curtis Park, Cockle Bay Reserve and Macleans Park. Super Kool Ice Cream will now be able to serve ice cream cones to park-goers on warm summer afternoons for a trial period of three months. They will be operating between 12pm and 5pm on weekends and in the schools holidays. The contract will be re-evaluated at the end of the trial period but Howick Local Board’s Garry Boles, lead of the parks portfolio, says he hopes the Super Kool Ice Cream truck will be the first of many. “The board agrees that allowing food and coffee trucks to operate out of our local parks could create a really good vibe in the community,” he says. “Imagine in summer having bands playing on a stage, with food trucks and stalls easily accessible. It would turn our parks into a hot spot for summer afternoons and the community will get good use out of it.”

Half Moon Bay ferry and over the next few months we hope to have interpretative signs and plaques installed at several sites,” says Ms White. In launching the app, the local board paid tribute to the work of respected Howick historian Alan La Roche who has provided the content and to project coordinator Humphrey Beeson. “It’s been a labour of love to get to this point and would never have gotten off the ground without their dedication and hard work,” says Ms White.

in a safe environment. “We don’t want to encourage kids to go door knocking asking for lollies from strangers, and many older folk tell me they feel intimidated by people knocking on their doors and asking for things. “At the Light Party, we don’t want to celebrate the negative aspects of Halloween but instead hold a fun alternative for the community.” ➤➤St Columba’s Light Party, Tuesday October 31, 5pm-8pm.

REVIEW

Sheila’s story really is extraordinary ■■By Kelly Teed Writer, historian, illustrator, naturalist, sailor, cyclist and nonagenarian. There’s no shortage of words to choose from when it comes to describing Sheila Natusch. There is, however, an extremely well-made film about her extraordinary life. No Ordinary Sheila is aptly named. Directed by Hugh Macdonald, Sheila’s cousin and produced by author Christine Dann, the documentary explores the life of Natusch and the fiercely independent, talented and creative woman that she was. I’d wager it near impossible to watch this remarkably well-told story and not feel inspired to live life to its fullest. In her words: “I’m interested in living and getting the last bit of

fun out of life there is” – and that she did.Born on Stewart Island in 1926, Sheila was never destined to have an ordinary life. The film follows her from early childhood, into her young adult years where she formed a friendship with renowned New Zealand author Janet Frame as they attempted an unsuccessful foray into teaching together and then further into later life. Excerpts of interviews mixed in with archive footage and a fantastic soundtrack entwine together to create a beautiful masterpiece offering a glimpse into the making of Sheila. The final moments of the film were simply beautiful – so much in fact that I was nearly brought to tears. An emotional montage of Sheila’s life made all the more moving by a perfectly suited musical ensemble in the back-

ground. Sheila passed away in early August, just days after she saw the film of her life at the sold out Wellington premiere where it finished to rapturous applause. In Sheila’s words, the film was “just brilliant”. A brilliant film for a brilliant lady – it’s only right I suppose. In those final few moments of the film, Sheila’s sheer determination shines through during an interview with Radio New Zealand’s Kim Hill. “I’ve got cancer of the liver but I ignore it,” she says matterof-factly. What about treatment? “There’s nothing they can do. I’ll just fade away in my own time…it’s nothing.” What an extraordinary attitude from someone who certainly was no ordinary Sheila.

ean McGrath has been shooting guns almost as long as he’s been able to walk. While most three-year-olds were busy playing with plastic toys, McGrath was out hunting with his dad. At five-years-old, McGrath got a gun to call his very own. Now in Year 12, the Howick College student has a long list of achievements to his name. He recently won big at the Secondary Schools DTL Clay Target Shooting which was attended by more than 300 secondary school girls and boys. McGrath was the overall boys champion for the two days, winning the NZ two day High Gun Champion title and was named the National Champion for the Single Rise Championship and Trophy. He also took first place in the single barrel championship and third place in the point score championship. McGrath, who grew up in The Gardens, says what started off as duck shooting practice grew into a love for the sport and he now spends three hours on a Wednesday and all day on most Sundays practicing in spots around the North Island. “I love shooting, love being out there, love getting in it.”

SLEEPYHEAD BEDS

ceanz Seafood market on Ti Rakau Drive in Botany Downs was recently named as Auckland’s Top Chip Shop 2017. The award is the run by The Chip Group which is a division of Potatoes New Zealand. To qualify for the award, stores have to produce chips with a fat content below 9 per cent. Once qualified, stores are mystery shopped and a number of factors are assessed in deciding the winner. This is the second time the Botany store has won the award and the sixth time an Oceanz Seafood outlet has taken out a regional award. Store owner Ali Lokhandwala paid tribute to his staff when collecting the award and in particular head cook Rita Harris who has been at the Botany Outlet for over ten years. Ali calls Rita the “Fish & Chip Mother” as her dedication to

producing a consistent quality product is what has kept the store at the top of its game over a long period of time. Ali said other keys to their success was using the best quality oil, changing it regularly and also having access to the best quality, fresh fish in New Zealand which helps ensure that the oil is well maintained. While quality oil and fish are much more expensive, it does allow Ali to sleep better knowing his customers are getting the best product that is available. Oceanz Botany are celebrating their 13th birthday this week and the award proves that it is not an unlucky number for everyone. Come visit Oceanz at 451 Ti Rakau Drive to see their great collection of fresh and frozen seafood along with the award-winning Fish & Chips – you won’t be disappointed.

‘I became a master of deception’ ■■By Kelly Teed

I

f you know me at all you’ll know I’ve never been an athletic person. It’s not entirely through lack of trying — I’m very much a ‘have a go’ person. It’s just that my brain never properly sends those co-ordination signals from my head to my limbs. I was never the first person picked for sports teams in PE class at school, I was never going to get any sports awards and the only way to get me to run voluntarily was if you set an axe-wielding clown or maniac with a chainsaw onto chasing me. Are you getting the picture yet? Historically, running and I have not mixed. And yet at some point earlier this year, things changed. I enrolled in a 10km race on Waiheke despite only ever running that distance once before – two years prior on a treadmill. I’d love to say I trained extensively but the truth is I ran approximately three kilometres, three times before struggling through the race where I remembered exactly why I don’t run. So naturally, I got home and signed myself up to run 21.1km in the Auckland Bar-

foot and Thompson Half Marathon in this Sunday. Yes, you read that right. I’m running 21.1 kilometres from Devonport to Victoria Park with a few loops and detours on the way. Why would I put myself through such torture, I hear you ask? The answer is simple. I’m

running to raise money for charity. Not just any charity – a charity close to my heart. I’m running as a charity hero for the Mental Health Foundation. Suicide. It’s a big word. No one really likes to think about it, let alone talk about it. And yet whether or not we talk about it, it happens. Far more frequently than we’d care to admit. Recent provisional figures show New Zealand’s suicide rate has increased for the fourth year in a row. Between July 2016 and June 2017, 606 people took their own life. Let’s just let that number sink in. Six hundred and six people – in our tiny country – decided that their lives were no longer worth living. That’s more than the number of students in a lot of schools around the country and to be honest, I find that statistic truly horrifying. New Zealand has some of the highest suicide rates in the developed world and I refuse to sit back and accept things the way they currently are. People should not have to wait weeks on end for professional help – especially not people who actively want to die. Depression is a dark, lonely

place. Multiple emotions running through your head all at once – including, but not limited to, anger, inexplicable sadness, dread, guilt, self-hate and loathing. It’s an ongoing battle in your mind. Simply getting out of bed is an overwhelming thought, let alone having a shower and getting dressed. The negativity feels like a constant weight physically dragging you down. I know firsthand how debilitating it can be because I have been there before. I understand how everyday tasks can become ten times harder. On a good day, I could go out and socialise. I could laugh with my friends and have fun and quiet the little nagging voice in the back of my head. But on a bad day, simply having a shower and getting dressed was a huge accomplishment. I didn’t know why I was sad, I just was and I was angry with myself for feeling that way. I was filled with self-doubt, convinced my friends didn’t actually like me and that no one would really care if I spoke about how I was feeling. I was scared of being told that other people had it worse, I was scared of being accused of lying and I was scared that people would judge me for how weak I felt

for feeling the way I did. I became a master of deception. I’d go to school and try to function normally but no one knew the dark thoughts in my mind. No one knew I would come home and cry myself to sleep. When I finally did ask for help, all my fears proved to be false. I was believed immediately and signed up to counselling. When I eventually spoke out publicly a couple of years later, I was met with even more love and support. Since I’ve started running, my mental health has improved significantly. Even just going for a short 10 minute jog can do wonders for clearing my mind. It’s easy to think that ‘one person won’t make a difference’ but that’s where all the difference can be made. So on October 29, I will take to the streets to pound the pavement for 21.1km and while I silently curse myself for putting myself through the pain and torture, I will remind myself I am one of the lucky ones. I was lucky to not have to wait weeks or months on end for professional help like so many do. I’m lucky to have people surrounding me who love

I count myself as lucky because I saw the light at the end of the tunnel when so many people don’t and now I want to help as many people as I can out of that dark, lonely tunnel because I know what it’s like. I am alive - and that makes me one of the lucky ones. I’m running to raise as much as possible for the Mental Health Foundation. Making a welcome return

Wallabies’ victory delivers timely lesson

Marie Raos HPCC Premier Men were declared 371/6. Andrew Morrison 145, Daniel Young 79, Andy de Boorder 66. Takapuna were on 33/1 at stumps with Danru Ferns 1/12. The match continues next Saturday at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Howick Pakuranga started well in the Hedley Howarth two day championship on a well-prepared Lloyd Elsmore wicket by staging an opening stand between Bill Walsh and Daniel Young of 84 runs. From that point on, the home side remained in complete control throughout the day amassing a formidable 371 before snatching an early wicket against the playing through champions Takapuna in the eight overs left for play. New World HPCC Premier Women played two more matches in the Pearl Dawson T20 competition at Shore Rd winning against Papatoetoe and losing to Takapuna. The match against neighbours Papatoetoe ended in a tie at 88 each and a bowl off was needed to decide the winner. Fortunately Howick New World HPCC won this narrowly by taking two wickets to Papatoetoe’s 1. Scoreboard: ➤ Papatoetoe First innings 88 Rae Allright 4/13, Mansiran Kaur 2/17 Howick New World HPCC 88 Amberley Parr 22 not out, Riva Aoroa 19, J Tully 19 ➤ Howick Pakuranga win one over bowl off 2-1 Andrew de Boorder making a welcome return to the side. hile Matilda had cause to waltz in celebrating the Wallabies’ 23-18 Suncorp Stadium rugby test triumph, the All Blacks fans were left to ponder on the importance of their missing stars. While Lima Sopoaga and Scott Barrett have made progress this year, they didn’t have the impact of the test-hardened Beauden Barrett and Brodie Retallick, both of whom have won International Rugby Player of the Year awards. Nor does Damian McKenzie, hero of the hard-fought Cape Town triumph against South Africa, have the all-round game of Ben Smith who is on a wellearned sabbatical. Other first stringers out of action with injuries include nippy right wing Nehe Milner-Skudder and props Owen Franks and Joe Moody who have been replaced by Waisake Naholo, Nepo Laulala and Kane Hames who have all done the jersey proud. It reflects well on the depth of talent at the disposal of se-

lectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox who have not been afraid to give youth its head. Another to grab his chance was Jordie Barrett who would probably have been preferred to McKenzie as the starting fullback had injury not sidelined him for the season. With Rieko Ioane, Ngani Laumape, Vaea Fifita, Ofa Tu’ungafasi and David Havili other recent All Blacks who will be joined by newcomers Matt Duffie. Jack Goodhue, Tim Perry and Asafo Aumua on the northern tour, the selectors are building for the future. Harbour and Blues right wing Duffie, a former St Kents student, has a good all-round game and has been preferred to Julian Savea. At 20, electrifying left wing Ioane is already a star and speedy blindside flanker Fifita scored a sensational try in his test debut against Argentina. The prolific try-scoring fast and powerful Aumua has the potential to be an even better

Agnew’s Angle attacking hooker than Dane Coles. Meanwhile full credit to Australia for their long-awaited win against an All Blacks team that lacked discipline and were punished accordingly by referee Wayne Barnes. With Kurtley Beale and Israel Folau dangerous attackers and Reece Hodge capping his early intercept try with a crucial 53m penalty goal, Australian pride was restored although two earlier wins against them ensured the Bledisloe Cup remains in NZ. The truth of the adage “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” was reflected in the bone-crunching tackles made by Sam Cane and captain Kieran Read. Apart from a senseless kicking away of possession in the dying stages, Sonny Bill Williams had his best game of the season and

was the pick of the backs. Meanwhile another Canterbury versus Tasman Mitre Cup 10 premiership final this Saturday in Christchurch reflects the strength of the Crusaders franchise. Having taken the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury with a magnificent comeback, Taranaki would have fancied their chances but were pipped 30-29 by Tasman. Although losing their semifinal 35-24 to Canterbury, North Harbour can reflect on a good season under astute coach Tom Courtney with their 50-plus win against woeful Auckland a highlight. Having beaten a much improved Northland 49-21, Wellington should win the championship final against tenacious Bay of Plenty who accounted for Otago 48-32. A return to the premiership would be just reward for the Lions who have Jackson GardenBachop, Thomas Umaga-Jenson and Wes Goosen starring in a classy backline.
