Dreyer receives service medal L

ong time Howick resident Colonel Barry Dreyer has had his work and service to veterans recognised with the Defence Meritorious Service Medal – but he’s taking it in his stride “It was all a bit of a surprise actually,” he laughed. Mr Dreyer was on a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean when he received the news of his award in March, and says he immediately shared the good news with his wife. Since his retirement from the New Zealand Army in 1988, Mr Dreyer has provided 30 years of continuous voluntary support and service to the New Zealand Army veterans’ community and to a wide range of community organisations with links to the Armed Forces. In 2010 he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, an honorary, unpaid position that serves as the domestic head of the Regiment with the role of fostering esprit de corps, promoting community interest, advising senior officers and commanders on regimental matters and maintaining close relationships with their counterparts in Commonwealth forces. Real Estate

Bidois to stand for Northcote seat

Preet & Co in liquidation ■■By Nick Krause High-flying Preet & Co Real Estate (PEL) and Preet & Co Rentals (PRL) have now gone into liquidation owing creditors at least $14 million. PEL held the franchise rights for the Harcourts’ brand for south and east Auckland for the sales arm of the business. It had 10 branches with offices in Botany, Ellerslie, Otahuhu, Howick, Manukau (two sites), Pakuranga, Papatoetoe, Meadowlands and Manurewa. Administrators – and now liquidators – Meltzer Mason were called in on November 22 “on appointment by a secured creditor” to allow the insolvency group to take control of the affairs to see if there was a way forward for “an otherwise successful business”. A Meltzer Mason report to creditors says the sole director and shareholder of the group, Gurpreet Grewal, was referred to Meltzer Mason by a firm of accountants who acted for the shareholding trusts for the Harcourts group in New Zealand. The report says anomalies were discovered in the trust accounts of the Preet companies around August/September and are being investigated by the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). Mr Grewal tried to keep a lid on things assuring the administrators he was committed to paying all creditors, adding that once the appointment of Meltzer Mason became public, the business would be “rendered useless”, the report says. The administrators say Preet & Co had traded relatively well but

had expanded quickly. There was significant secured debt and the companies had significant funding requirements but were unable to secure financing. As a result of the REAA investigation, Mr Grewal had volunteered to relinquish his licence while investigations were undertaken. “In the administrators’ assessment, the rapid expansion, coupled with potentially overvalued acquisitions and the high level of borrowing, led to working capital deficiencies,” the report says. “It is relevant that this programme of growth was undertaken when the value of real estate in Auckland was rising annually at very high percentages.” As to the companies’ financial accounts, draft figures for the year to March 31, 2017 record a $380,610 profit on turnover of $12.688 million for PEL and a net loss of $2232 on a turnover of $852,210 for PRL. Net assets were recorded on the balance sheets as $1.695m for PEL and net liabilities of $127,930 for PRL. As at the date of appointment of Meltzer Mason, there were two secured creditors – Bank of New Zealand (first ranking) owed $10.179m and Harcourts Group (second ranking) for $1.2m. Unsecured creditors are the Inland Revenue ($2.262m), known trade creditors - Preet & Co Real Estate ($859,749) and known creditors Preet & Co Rentals ($20,817) for a total of $14,521,951 as at November 22, 2017. The Times has attempted to contact Mr Grewal for comment.

owick’s Dan Bidois, a Harvard-educated economist, is standing as National Party’s candidate to contest the Northcote seat left vacant after Jonathan Coleman’s resignation from Parliament triggered a byelection. “I grew up in Howick and spent my formative years out east, but am hugely passionate about Northcote and the communities here,” he told the Times. “They deserve a champion, someone who will stand up to the Labour Government and council and make sure there is strong opposition to things like the fuel taxes which will hit Aucklanders hard.” Bidois is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with bone cancer Ewing’s Sarcoma - shortly after finishing school at the age of 15 and had chemotherapy and an operation to save his leg. Karkaria reaching for the stars P

akuranga College student Zariab Karkaria has won allexpenses paid place at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand’s annual conference to be held in Christchurch from May 4-6. The society, founded in 1920, has been promoting the opportunity to high school students throughout the country. Zariab had to write an essay detailing his passion for the science and why he wanted to attend in order to win one of the 10 spots. “I heard about the annual conference from our earth and space science teacher, who mentioned it in class and I was quick to grab that opportunity,” says Zariab. The conference will have a mix of amateur astrologers with a strong core group of experts, mainly made up of university professionals. Talking about his tryst with the stars he says, “What sparked my interest in astronomy was the first time I looked through a telescope at the age of seven. “I stood on the balcony and spent the night gazing at the moon, with all its craters and hills that we can’t see with the naked eye- along with other stars and the nearby Mars—I was hooked onto it. “My first visit to a planetarium was a spectacular experience. ‘I’ll never forget observing the gas giant Jupiter and its iconic big red spot and orbiting moons. “It was fascinating to observe

the beautiful Saturn and its rings and Neptune’s frozen surface.” He compares astronomy to a black hole that he got sucked into. “The more curious you are, the more you are drawn into it. With so many unanswered questions, there’s no going back. That’s what makes astronomy so special.”

Astronomers from throughout New Zealand and overseas will be at the conference. “I have never attended a conference like this before and I really look forward to it, especially meeting fellow astronomy enthusiasts and experts at the conference,” Zariab says.

Local teacher and Miss World finalist Natasha Unkovich has raised more than $15,000 in a string of local fundraising events. Over the weekend Unkovich held a movie fundraiser at The Monterey, a sausage sizzle and with the help of her sponsor Angela Rudling, a charity auction at Basalt in an effort to raise funds for Annie’s Lifeline. Annie’s lifeline is the chosen charity for the Miss World NZ fundraising efforts, and goes towards helping give young adults who have suffered from mental illness or youth suicide survivors a scholarship to kick start their studies. “It was a whirlwind weekend and I am so happy to share that we raised more than $15,000 for an incredible cause so I am very happy,” she says. “I cannot thank the community enough for coming together and for their generosity in donating to such a worthy organisation that helps give those suffering from mental illness a way into study.” Unkovich will take the stage at Miss World NZ on May 5.

onscious consumers are the biggest growing consumer group in the world and a lot of businesses want a piece of the pie, said Jemma Whiten, director of Marketing and Digital Ecostore as she addressed students of Saint Kentigern College on Thursday. Businesses are realising that having ethical practises is a good pay off. According to different surveys done globally, over 70 per cent of people are happy to pay more for products or services provided by companies with a proven commitment to positive environmental impact. Talking to business students studying Ecostore as a case study for their International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, Ms Whiten gave an overview of complexities involved in working with overseas markets like China and the US. “The fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) market is a very complex business and success is about getting so many things right. It’s about building a brand with purpose and meaning, a brand that consumers love,” she said to NCEA Level 1 Business students. “To get consumers to love a brand, you have to connect with consumers and understand how everyone ticks. You have to create trust and credibility, which is not easy. “To choose a better tomorrow, you have to picture the future,” she said about the 25-year-old safe, sustain-

able and eco-friendly brand that pushes people to stop and think every day about the choices they make. Ms Whiten gave students an insight into the research and development, manufacturing process, supply chain, brand strategy and business management aspects of Ecostore as she spoke about the implications of growth in different countries and how it may not always be feasible. Excited to see a school focussed on educating responsible leaders for a more sustainable world, she said that more than 40 per cent of the global population is between ages 10 and 24 and to solve the world’s problems, the next generation

needs to not only know about environmental damage but also about sustainable development. Head of commerce at Saint Kents Vaishally Patel said students have been studying the inspirational story of Ecoman entrepreneur and activist Malcolm Rands as part of the curriculum. The story of the organic gardener and hippy from Northland who built the pioneering global brand is a textbook example of humble beginnings, taking on multi-nationals and setting a new standard of healthier living. “This was a good opportunity to be hands-on and get a deep insight of the intricacies of the marketing and operations of a sustainable product,” said Ms Patel.

Cat left for dead, SPCA investigating ■ BY THERESE HENKIN An investigation has been launched to find those responsible for reportedly wrapping a cat in masking tape and leaving it for dead in Whitford. An SPCA spokesperson said the cat was in critical condition when it arrived at the Auckland SPCA this morning. “We can confirm that a cat was brought SPCA’s Auckland centre after it was found reportedly wrapped in masking tape three weeks ago,” says the spokesperson. A post on a community Facebook page reported that the tabby cat was found on the side of the road in Whitford.

The spokesperson said the finders of the cat have been caring for it for the last three weeks until it was brought to the SPCA this morning for medical treatment. “The cat was examined by SPCA vets who found that it was critically

unwell,” she says. “The cat was unable to stand, suffering from likely end-stage renal failure and severe dehydration. It had difficulty breathing and was cyanotic [bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, caused by inadequate oxygen levels]. “Unfortunately, the SPCA vets had to make the difficult decision to euthanise the cat on humane grounds.” SPCA inspectors would like to hear from anyone with information about this cat leading to the condition in which it was found. ➤ Any information can be reported to 256 7300.

Mystery of missing flagpole solved ■ BY NICK KRAUSE The mystery of the missing flag pole on Moore Street has been the topic of much consternation over the past few years, not least amongst those in the company of the inquisitive and particularly dogged Morrin Cooper, proud former Mayor of of Howick. But doggedness can pay off. Mr Cooper told the Times he spent three of four years searching for the flag pole which used to stand guard outside the former Howick Borough Council premises on the corner of Moore Street and Fencible Drive. “The flag pole mysteriously disappeared,” he said. “I’ve been on the trail of it ever since.” So what’s so special about this flag pole? It transpires it’s a naval flag pole with crosstree which was put in place by Mr Cooper’s mayoral predecessor, the late Whitford Blundell. Mr Blundell, named after the village just down the road, was a bridge builder and Mayor of Howick from 1966 to 1974. Mr Cooper doesn’t know where the 12-metre high flag pole came from, or obviously where it went for several years. However, he does know that the late Bill Mudgway - the Eye

in the Sky and golden voice of Springs Speedway, and Howick’s Santa Parade for many years – was public relations officer at Howick Borough Council. “It was his job to put the flag up every morning,” Mr Cooper said. Sam Isaia, the senior maintenance delivery coordinator – operational management and maintenance community facilities official from Auckland Council, was there with a team to put the flag pole back in its rightful place. Mr Isaia only joined in July and after much determination discovered the flag pole in an old depot where it had been deposited by an old contractor. And it was not in the best condition either as the base was rotten through. That’s been skilfully taken care of and the flag pole, said Mr Cooper, is back where it belongs. What next? He’s keen to know why council hasn’t let community groups rent the vacant building, formerly home to Howick Police. “I also want to get in there and draw those curtains...it looks so untidy.” He’ll also ensure he or Wally Rice of Rice’s Mall in Howick will see to the flags there and make sure it is flown at half mast on Anzac Day next Wednesday.

etting a ride in a police car with flashing lights is practically every child’s dream come true and some of the children got a chance to play cop at the Family Fun Day, an annual fundraiser held at Te Puru Park recently. Sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson Beachlands and Whitford, in conjunction Te Puru Community Centre and the Beachlands Community Trust, there was a range of fun activities for children, included bowling, treasure hunt, face painting, hula hoops, bumper balls, bouncy castle and thee-legged

race. Local police took children for short rides and the Beachlands Fire Brigade invited kids to explore the fire appliance. There were plenty of generous donations for the auction including a helicopter ride for two and an hour’s worth of kicking session with All Black great Grant Fox, a pioneer of the modern art of goal kicking; as well as a signed Vodafone Warriors shirt and a Fisher and Paykel side-byside refrigerator valued at $1799. Proceeds of the event went to Auckland Starship Children’s Hospital. There was a range of fun activities at Te Puru.

Importance of having a will

nzma.ac.nz

The Minister for Building and Construction and Associate Education Minister, The Hon. Jenny Salesa, MP opened the newly refurbished 8000 square metres New Zealand Management Academies (NZMA) Trades Campus, on Great South Road, Mount Wellington, Auckland recently. Fitted out with brand new classrooms, workshops, and lab, the purpose-built site will be a hub for students wanting to learn trades skills in South Auckland. The Minister said, “I am impressed with the vision shown by NZMA to open this facility to train more builders, painters, plumbers and electricians. Last year thousands of NZMA graduates and students were placed into jobs. I have no doubt there will be a high demand for your trades students. I look forward to seeing more

A question we should ask ourselves is how can I ensure that my wishes relating to property, assets, and possessions are carried out after my death and to make sure that happens. It is important to have a current written will, the original retained perhaps by the lawyer who prepared it for you and a copy held by a family member or a close friend. It is paramount that the will is readily available when the time comes – no one wants to spend hours searching for the document. There is though nothing to stop one from writing their own will; and there are several write-yourown-will kits available from stationery shops. If you do that to avoid legal fees, it is still advisable to get it checked by a lawyer to make sure there are no unforeseen snags and it has been properly signed and witnessed. Otherwise there could be a risk of problems down the track and the will could be challenged. You can write a will at any time, you do not have to wait for major events, such as marriage or the birth of children or grandchildren to do so. Another important point to be aware of is that if you do have an existing will prior to marriage that becomes invalid and another one must be prepared taking into consideration your current circumstances. This also applies to a re-marriage, the previous will if it exists will be invalid and another must be prepared taking into consideration prior family members and current family members. Some wills can become very complex, but for peace of mind it is very important to make sure that it is updated regularly to take into consideration changed circumstances to make sure that our wishes are carried out when we pass on. To summarise noted below are the top five tips for wills: ■■ When we get married, the will we wrote before the marriage is no longer valid ■■ If we die without a will, all our assets do not automatically go to our partners/family ■■ If we die without a will, the government will use a formula to divide up our assets ■■ The last will we signed, even if it is out-of-date will be the one used if we die ■■ Wills are not just about what we leave to people, they can also identify the person we want to look after our children This is only a very brief overview of this topic, and does not cover, how a will can be challenged, the roles of a trustee and an executor, probate etc. For further information please contact us so we can supply either verbal information or detailed worksheets explaining in an understandable format the ins and outs of making a will. The retirement commissioner mentioned that only approx 50 per cent of people have made their wills, so if you are one who has not made a will; consider seriously the impact of not having one.

Programmes are available in Construction, Electrical Engineering, Painting and Plastering, Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drain Laying, and Youth Guarantee Level 2 all in a single NZMA hub. There is no better way to learn about the construction industry than to do it yourself, and NZMA is giving people building experience they’d find hard to get anywhere else. NZMA also have a team of Careers specialists who assist students in finding the right job.

Pacific and Maori tradespeople graduate from here, and I congratulate NZMA for being part of the Housing Solution.”

Students read out poems and presented him with specially made cards. “I have absolutely loved working with all of you and will miss that part of the role but the travel demands have become too demanding,” he said. “For all those that have made appointments with me for term 2, I will be arranging someone else to come visit you and will let you know asap who that will be. I will be seeing out appointments made for the rest of this term. “Thank you all for your support over the last three years. Some of you were very tolerant with me at the start and I thank you for that.” Neetha Mudhan, assistant campus leadGolflands Campus of Elim Christian College, shares some images that speak louder than words of children interacting with the much loved constable with the Times.

I’m greatly concerned about the proposed Education (Protecting Teacher With Title) Amendment Bill currently making its way Simeon through Parliament which, Brown as you may guess from its name, seeks to protect the title of teacher. But protect it from what? The Bill being supported by the Labour/Greens/NZ First coalition government will make it illegal for people to call themselves a teacher if they are not fully qualified and registered as one, and anyone who breaches this rule is liable to pay a $2000 fine. You may ask what’s wrong with that, and the simple answer is to point out all those who teach without being registered teachers. Think teacher aides, music teachers, ballet teachers, dance teachers; the list goes on. They will all have to find a new name to define the good work that they do for fear of breaching the law and facing a massive fine. This approach undermines and devalues the important work that so many educators do and suggests a nanny state approach that the Labour/NZ First/Greens Government seems adamant on pursuing. There are many people who call themselves teachers without working in a traditional school structure, like those who teach music and dance, and what difference does it make to force them to go by another title? National believes there are far greater priorities for education, especially when we already have provisions in the law to penalise those who may be misleading people about their qualifications or registration as school teachers. Passing legislation like this will benefit no-one while inconveniencing thousands and potentially hindering their ability to do their jobs. This Bill is a clear-cut case of a Government fixing a problem that doesn’t exist, while creating another one in the process. ➤ Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

Other special attractions included art exhibitions, multicultural performances, free medical services, vegetarian food stalls, as well as cultural and community stalls. Half a century on... let the party begin I

t’s been a half a century since Edgewater College opened its gates to students and now it is time to celebrate the golden jubilee year. The grand celebration begins with three main events on April 27 and 28. The events are open to all former students, teachers, staff and their families. An open Mix and Mingle evening on April 27 at 7pm hosted at Edgewater College will provide a light supper for $35. It’s also an opportunity to view memorabilia as well as videos, images and stories over the decades. A great chance to catch up and share stories with peers and teachers. A Reminisce Morning is on April 28 at 9am at Edgewater College. There’s no charge for the event. It involves touring the school at leisure and learning of all the achievements and changes that have taken place over the past 50 years. There will also be an opportunity for decade and class photos to be taken with former classmates. A morning tea will be provided. The highlight though is the 50th Anniversary Dinner at the

An emotional farewell S

hared values, generosity of spirit, developing deep, honest relationships and getting really clear on what your work is, are some of the values that departing principal Mary Wilson of Baverstoack Oaks School touched on at the school assembly hosted to say farewell. Times photographer Wayne Martin captured some raw emotions at students expressed their appreciation with a rousing haka, lots of hugs, cards and mementoes and bid a tearful farewell to Mary Wilson, the much loved, founder principal of Baverstock Oaks School. Associate principal Genée Crowley is the learning leader of the school from term 2.

What’s happening with the OCR? T

he Reserve Bank’s current forecasts suggest that the official cash rate (OCR) will be held at 1.75 per cent until mid-2019. This outlook reflects the fact that inflation remains relatively benign due to continued overcapacity in the global economy and subdued wage and pricesetting behaviour domestically, according to Auckland Property Market Research from Crockers Property for April 2018. Nevertheless, both skilled and unskilled workers are becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to find. Given the tightening labour market, it is possible that the OCR will need to be lifted earlier in 2019 to counteract mounting wage and cost pressures. During the next tightening cycle in monetary conditions, Infometrics expects the OCR to peak at about 3.5 per cent. An OCR at this level would translate into floating mortgage rates of about 7.6 per cent. This relatively modest peak is indicative of a view that interest rates are set to remain lower than the rates that prevailed during the 1990s and 2000s. Although longer-term interest rates ended 2017 slightly lower than they started the year, upward pressure on these rates still looks to be in the pipeline.

further 50 points over the following two years. These movements will flow through into higher fixed mortgage rates, with all rates advertised by the retail banks back above 6 per cent by the end of 2020.

Stability in global economic growth will gradually see more central banks around the world move into a phase of tightening monetary conditions. Infometrics forecasts that 10-year bond rates will rise about 50 basis points during 2018 and a

Having peaked at 14 per cent pa in mid-2016, house price inflation had slowed to 3.9 per cent pa by October last year according to Quotable Value’s index. However, data during the middle to latter part of 2017 showed small signs of a recovery in prices, particularly in Auckland. We note that 26 per cent of respondents to the latest CPII survey expect house prices in Auckland to fall over the next 12 months. This figure is greater than the 23 per cent of respondents a year ago and the 11 per cent recorded in early 2016 when looking forward over a twoyear horizon. Significantly, just 8 per cent of people in the latest survey expect price rises of 5.0 per cent or more over the next year, well down from the 31 per cent in this camp in 2017 and 61 per cent of respondents in 2016. Infometrics is forecasting a drop of 15 per cent in house prices over the three years to December 2020. This fall appears dramatic compared to the 9.8 per cent average decline in prices over a 15-month period in 2008/09 at the height of the GFC. However, property is now significantly more overvalued than it was

prior to the GFC. Infometrics’ forecast decline is also more gradual than during the GFC, with less financial stress on property owners and fewer forced sales limiting the extent of house price falls. Two factors present upside risks to these forecasts and could limit house price declines. Firstly, a solid economic performance of 2-3 per cent pa GDP growth could see prices hold steady, but fewer properties being transacted, with owners

under little pressure to sell and so refusing to drop their asking prices. Secondly, Auckland’s undersupply of housing could maintain a high level of competition among buyers and force property prices higher. Considering this situation, Infometrics notes that Auckland’s housing undersupply places the region less at risk of house price falls than many other parts of the country as population growth slows.

Hornets tame Leopards The Howick Hornets fought back from a 14-8 deficit at half-time to beat Otahuhu and clock their second victory of the new season with a 22-14 win. Coach Shaun Clark credited the strong impact of his bench, who turned the game early in the second half. Veteran prop Tony Tuia was another standout, playing 70 minutes in the middle of the park. While they missed out on the two points, the Leopards will take plenty of confidence from footing it with last-year’s semi-finalists.

ew Zealand’s men’s and women’s sevens wins against Olympic champions Fiji and Australia respectively provided a happy Commonwealth Games final day for the Kiwis on Australia’s Gold Coast. While the fifth placed medal count of 46 (15 gold, 16 silver, 15 bronze) failed to compare with the hosts 198 (80,59,59), it remained highly satisfactory for a nation of our size. Who will forget Kelly Brazier’s extra time 80m sprint for sevens gold or the sheer joy of the English netballers on pipping Australia at the post for the first netball Commonwealth gold in their history? That painted a sad contrast to the distraught Silver Ferns who failed to medal for the first time and whose coach Janine Southby’s win record of 51 per cent suggests her head is on the chopping block. There’s no disgrace in losing to Australia or much-improved England and Jamaica, but being humiliated by Malawi showed just how badly the

Ferns’ standards have plummeted. The decision not to play centre Laura Langman because she played in the Australian league came back to haunt a team that lacked confidence and abandoned its zone defence. It was a shame that one of the great comeback wins of the Games was tainted by mountain biker Sam Gaze’s poor sportsmanship in accusing team-mate Anton Cooper of the same for not stopping for him while his bike was being repaired. That Gaze came back to win with a withering, sustained sprint spoke volumes for his ability, if not his mental judgment. In fairness, he did make a belated apology. But it is a shame his earlier action will leave a lasting memory and erase the glitter from his gold. With the cyclists giving the New Zealand contingent an excellent start and Sam Webster picking up two golds, the boxers also did their bit with five medals. Shot putter Tom Walsh com-

fortably won his event while relatively new mum Val Adams and pole vault poster girl Liza McCartney had to settle for silvers. Particularly pleasing was the performance of the Black Sticks women’s hockey team in beating both England and Australia in dramatic fashion to finally win gold. And once again Para Olympian swimmer Sophie Pascoe starred in the pool. Critics who claim the Commonwealth Games lack the status of the Olympics and world championships do have a point. But it remains a great sporting festival for aspiring champions and long may it continue. Full marks for the Brisbane Broncos for registering a deserved 27-18 NRL triumph to break the Warriors’ 5-0 winning streak. They ran harder, were more cohesive and strung their passes together better. However there is much to like about the Warriors play this year to give fans encouragement although the Dragons pose a

tough proposition next up. Meanwhile it was heartening to see fullback Ben Smith return to his best with two dazzling tries in the Highlanders 43-17 Super Rugby win against David Pocock’s Brumbies. Add to that the brilliance of Beauden Barrett and Ben Lam in the Hurricanes 25-13 win against the Chiefs, with Barrett winning his duel against mercurial Damian McKenzie and Lam scoring a stunning try when beating four defenders. However with so many of his best props still injured, All Black coach Steve Hansen will be praying for a quick recovery before the French arrive here in June.
