ast Wednesday we attended one of the largest funerals to be held in Howick for a long time. The very sudden loss of young mother Belinda (Bindy) Jane Burns was a huge shock for all who knew the family. Belinda was the much-loved eldest daughter of Pip and the late Wes Burns who for many years owned Wes Burns Appliances in Howick. Since 1974, the year Belinda was born, I have known the family and my girls have played netball with both Belinda and her sister Bo. This loss was really personal to me and my family. The funeral was a magnificent send-off to Belinda with more than 700 people attending the ceremony at All Saints Anglican Church

New waste bins

Parul Sood, Waste planning manager Auckland Council responds to queries about the new foods waste bins that will be shortly introduced with a targeted rate of $67.

Auckland Councillor Sharon Stewart is disappointed that there has been no public consultation for food waste bins.

media about forgotten rubbish being dumped into parks and streams or into other people’s general waste bins. Auckland Councillor Sharon Stewart is disappointed that there has been no public consultation for the food waste bins. She says she has had calls from concerned residents asking about the small food waste bin. “People are having trouble finding any mention on the forms about the proposed targeted rate of $67,” she says. Mrs Stewart wants to make sure everyone has been consulted. “Elected councillors will be considering your feedback — this is just one of the questions being asked on the AK Have Your Say.”

ot many residents are aware that Auckland Council is proposing a targeted rate of $67 per year to fund a food scrap collection once a week. It will mean a third small (bucket) bin to which will be collected every second week. According to Waste Management staff, the red lidded-bin which is for general waste will be checked and if food waste has been binned inside, a sticker would go on it and the bin will not be collected. The new bucket bins will be hand-picked and emptied into another contractor’s truck. A consultation summary of Draft Auckland Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2018 says: “Nearly half the weight of an average household rubbish bin is food. It generates unwanted greenhouse gases in landfills and we think there’s a better way to manage it – by introducing a kerbside collection for food scraps across urban Auckland. “We can process food waste for useful purposes, such as making compost or generating energy. “We’ll also keep supporting initiatives to help you reduce the amount of food waste you produce, and to compost at home. “Over time, as weekly collections of food scraps remove the largest (and often smelliest) volume of waste from bins, we expect to be able to reduce refuse collection to a fortnightly service.” The bins have already been delivered to some areas of Papakura and have had residents complain of maggots and blow flies hanging around the bins. “If you forget to put the bin out one week, it will be two weeks of blow flies. The light bucket bins also tend to be blown on the road,” says a resident. Some people have commented on social

➤➤Does everyone have to have the bucket bin or is it optional? What about those who are composting the food waste in their backyards? Like with the household recycling bin service, people cannot ‘opt out’ of the food scrap collection – the service will be covered by rates in the areas it will be provided. The food scraps service will be provided to all households in the urban Auckland region. Aucklanders can choose whether or not they actually use the food bin. However, the average Auckland household rubbish bag/bin contains around 45 per cent food waste, so using the bin will significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. This will not only save residents money on rubbish disposal, but it will benefit the environment. The new food scraps service does not replace home composting. The food waste bin takes all types of food scraps including the ones that are not easily composted, such as meat, small bones and shellfish. The new food scraps service will also provide those households who currently are not able to home compost with a service to reduce their waste to landfill and provide them with a means of recycling their food waste. Up to 75 per cent of composters would also use the service as part of a complementary system to managing a household’s food waste. Some items like meat, bones and seafood shells are tricky to compost at home but are more easily processed at commercial level because of the scale and types of equipment used. The council actively encourages residents to compost and have a number of schemes in place to support this. However, research

indicates that a lot of people can’t or have not got the opportunity to compost, so the food scraps service gives everyone the opportunity to reduce their waste and do their bit for the environment. ➤➤When will it be introduced in East Auckland? Auckland Council is aiming to progressively introduce a food scraps collection service across the region by 2021. As of last week, approximately 18,000 properties in Papakura began receiving the service. And we have got no complaints so far. Exact timelines for the implementation of this service in other parts of Auckland have not yet been determined. ➤➤Why is there no mention of the cost in Have your Say Auckland? The targeted rate is mentioned in Issue 3 of the 10-year Budget. ➤➤Is it true that the red and yellow lid bins will be collected every second week and the red lid bin which is for general waste will be checked for food waste and fined accordingly? The rubbish collection service will continue to run weekly for the immediate future. However, over time, Aucklanders will not need to put their bins out every week. As weekly collections of food scraps remove the largest volume of waste from bins, we expect to be able to reduce refuse collection to a fortnightly service. Aucklanders can choose how often they want to have their bin emptied – only putting the bin out when it’s full can save residents money. There will be no changes to the fortnightly recycling service. To encourage residents to use the food scraps service we do have bylaw provisions that prohibit food scraps to put in the refuse bin.

Augmented reality

A magical mystery to solve ■■By Farida Master

world of Planet Zingoshi where kids have a mystery to solve. The augmented reality computer game is due to follow in mid-May. For the uninitiated, augmented reality books merge traditional text with digital content using a piece of technol-

magine reading a book with characters coming alive and magically popping out of the pages. With augmented reality enhanced books becoming hugely popular, it didn’t take long for Farm Cove resident and former television producer Ronel Schodt to tie up with writer Bridget Ellis-Pegler to create entertainment content that could challenge their preteen daughters and teach them values cleverly embedded in the book. The Zingoshi Chronicles, a ‘transmedia’ project comprising books, video games, and eventually a TV series, has been seven years in the making. Seeing great value in the augmented reality book got Kiwi business leader Theresa Gattung interested enough to invest seed money in the project. She even invited her friends reality TV pioneer Dame Julie Christie and My Food Bag founders Cecilia and James Robinson to put money in it. The release of The Zingoshi Chronicles, Dragonfly the first illustrated novel of the series that is enhanced by augmented reality, revolves around the friendship between two, ten-year-old girls. One of them happens to be from another planet where flying and magic are commonplace. Zingoshi is set in the fictional

“We went into this because as mothers we saw a gap in the market for 7-12 year olds,” says Bridget, the author of the book. “Whilst looking for material for our children we couldn’t find games that were suitable. So much of it was pink and fluffy and fairy-princessy. On the other hand, the young adolescent material focused on dating and fashion.” While the book is equally appealing to boys, it shows girls in a strong and positive light. “It’s super child-friendly and kid safe,” she says. Ronel adds that the project aims to integrate off-screen tasks, involving a range of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) activities. “It requires the player to leave the computer to complete off-screen tasks as part of the game play. Kids can also join the Zingoshi Club for more off-screen activities.” Enthused by the interest shown by children’s book publishers on their recent trip to the US, Ronel says that the games are a narrative to raise the literacy levels of the kids. “It will also take them away from screen time where they can draw things like butterfly wings that can then be their own wing in the game they play.” It’s mesmerising, magical and only the sky is the limit, they say.

With Simeon Brown

Simeon SAYS This means schools are now able to decide their own method of reporting, or indeed whether they even report to parents at all. This will result in confusion for parents who may want to see how their child is progressing both within their school and compared to the rest of the country, as there will no longer be a nationwide picture of achievement. The petition we have launched also calls for investment in online tools to ensure parents and teachers can have confidence in the data that’s being reported and have a greater frequency of reporting in the future. schools should be held accountable for lifting achievement, which was the key focus of this policy. As part of the last election we campaigned on a policy to widen the scope of National Standards to report across more of the curriculum. However, we recognised this would require a significant amount of time and investment and committed to retaining National Standards until we could adequately upgrade them. In scrapping National Standards without a replacement ready to take their place, Labour changed the National Administration Guidelines to remove the requirement for schools to report achievement information to the Ministry of Education.

Lion Rex Buckley said the annual event is held in association with the district’s scouts and the Howick Volunteer Coastguard. “It was a fabulous turnout and the weather was fantastic. The theme is respect for the water and to enjoy the water and to bring that to the public’s mind.”

Community

New community centre for Botany B

otany has a new community centre – the Kotahi Community Centre at the BotanyLife Community Church. Kotahi comes from the Maori word kotahitanga meaning unity or togetherness. A modern community space, which is flexible and wellequipped, has been designed with family events, kids’ parties community group meetings, business meetings, clubs and fitness groups in mind. The spacious auditorium can accommodate up to 120 people and is well-equipped with seating, tables, staging, lighting and AV systems. There’s also a café/ kitchen space that is hired out along with the auditorium. The meeting room can fit in around 35 people and is ideal for meetings, informal teaching sessions and smaller social gatherings. The search began in February 2006 when BotanyLife Commu-

Lottery Grants board, Lion Foundation, Placemakers Pakuranga, Speedy Signs and Christian volunteer builders MMM NZ helped translate the dream into a reality. From toddlers dancing during Mainly Music mornings to photography groups and fitness classes, the local community has already started making use of the centre. More recently there have been engagement and anniversary celebrations held in the main auditorium, and several groups from local intermediate schools have stayed overnight as part of leadership building camps. Birthday parties and community meetings are also planned, says Kotahi manager Mel Thorburn. “Anyone that needs a space to train, meet or celebrate – you’re welcome!” ➤➤Contact: Charlotte Gray charlotte@botanylife.org.nz / 021 287 5707.

Could you be the King of the Prospect?

T

he net has officially been cast for this year’s ultimate fishing King. Anglers from near and far will come together on Sunday, April 15 for the Prospect of Howick’s annual King of the Prospect fishing competition. The fisher who reels in the heaviest snapper will win a rod and reel to the value of $700, plus be crowned King of the Prospect and take out the official cup. Event organiser Barry O’Shaughnessy promises that the winner will also be granted unlimited bragging rights for the remainder of the year. “Many have tried and many have failed to take out the title of King of the Prospect,” he says. “But at the end of the day there’s only one fisherman who will have the honour of being crowned king.” There is a whopping total of $4500

KING OF THE PROSPECT FISHING COMPETITION

Extra funding approved for hospital building works Health Minister Dr David Clark says the Government has approved an extra $11.5 million funding for building works at Middlemore Hospital. The funding, which was signed off last month, will be used for re-cladding work on the Scott Building which has issues with weathertightness, timber framing decay and related damage. The extra injection of funds takes the total cost of the project to $27.5 million. “The Counties Manukau DHB is dealing with a number of leaky building issues that were first identified in 2012. It is disappointing that the previous Government did not make tackling

these problems a priority, said Clark. “Our hospitals and health infrastructure have been neglected for too long. This Government will not sit back while patients are treated in decaying facilities. The DHB identified the Scott Building as its top priority. “That’s why earlier this week the Government approved a revised business case for remediation work,” he said. “The DHB has been managing this situation for some years and a range of investigations, remediation and safety measures have been adopted. “But more work is obviously required and I will be seeking

answers directly from the DHB about its plan to deal with this situation.” The buildings date back to the early 2000s when untreated timber and other construction techniques associated with leaky buildings were in common use. “It is important to note that the DHB’s advice is that patient safety is not at risk as long as any rot and mould are contained in the walls. That will be of little comfort to the people of Counties Manukau who rightly expect that their hospitals are up to scratch. “The reality is that the legacy of underfunding in Health will take some years to turn around,” said Clark.

Time to saddle up The Wild Wild West theme at Owairoa Primary School included a picnic, grand parade and concert.

M

ore than 1000 cowboys, cowgirls and Indians cut a striking picture at Owairoa Primary last week. Students, staff and parents gathered on the school field on Monday for a picnic followed by a grand parade and concert as part of the school’s Wild Wild West themed Book Week. Sheriff Alan McIntyre had to lay low as a wanted poster of him around the school was offering a big reward for his capture. He stated from in hiding: “The Wild Wild West Book Week has been a fun way to get students reading and to get books into homes. Learning is all about memories and this week will stay with many students, and staff, for a long time.” The Grand Parade got off to a great start with the singing cowboy Jock Hume; followed by ex-student Nicholas Cornea

singing ‘Ring of Fire’; and award-winning singer / Owairoa school teacher Alice Fraser. The school also performed a combined line dance to the tune of ‘Achy Breaky Heart’. The week was filled with different activities that ranged from viewing farm animals on the field, to panning for gold, western nerf gun challenge, target shooting, creating harmonicas, ring tossing, constructing Indian headdresses, wild west riding school, horse shoe throw, western singing and the wild west technology challenge. The accompanying book fair with a display of the latest book titles had many students buy books for their home collection. The week concluded with students going to the movies for a taste of western drama and a bag of popcorn each.

Umupuia Beach gets big clean-up H

ot on the heels of the Volvo Yacht Race crews cleaning an Auckland beach, a group of Hunua School students from Years 5-8 cleaned up Umupuia Beach. A representative from Sustainable Coastlines visited the school and addressed the issues the world is having with plastics and other rubbish affecting marine life, said Hunua School deputy principal Kris Burden. So on March 16 they headed to the beach on a mission. “When we first arrived, we looked at the beach and wondered why we were there, it looked spotless,” Mrs Burden said. “Two hours later we had collected six bags of rubbish … clothing, fabric, fishing line, hooks, food wrappers, and so much glass! “We couldn’t believe how much rubbish there actually was, all having the potential to harm marine life or people.” Year 7 and 8 students also conducted a few experiments of their own. “There is a lot of discussion on the internet about the tiny pieces of plastic and plastic beads that contaminate the sand, so we wanted to know if Umupuia Beach was affected by this,” she said. Students set up stations in four

tidal zones. First of all, they collected any plastic they could see inside the hoops. Then it was time to test the sand itself. “We had seen an experiment where you place sand in a glass, added water and stirred. Every time, tiny pieces of plastic could be seen swirling in the water,” said Mrs Burden. “So we tried it for each of our four stations. We tested each station five times. On each occasion no plastic was found, only small pieces of plant came to the surface. We wonder how typical this is in New Zealand beaches? “We were able to take one bag back to school so we could conduct an audit. While we categorised, sorted and counted the rubbish, we created artworks that really made us think of the impact it all has on planet earth.”

Bidding war to be principal ■■By Farida Master So how much would you bid to be principal of a school? A bidding war between two devoted mothers who wanted their daughters to be principal for the day turned out to be of great benefit to Point View School. After outbidding each other at the school’s fundraiser at the recentlyhosted Twilight Market, the mums realised that things were getting a little out of hand and decided to stop bidding at $500 each. The end result—the principal’s hot seat was auctioned for a cool $1000 with eight-year-olds Irene Arora and Panya Sethi both getting to play principal for the day. When the Times visited Point View School on Thursday it was lunch time and both the young principals for the day were being accompanied by deputy principal Andie Pirie as they headed to the school staff room. Having finished half a day of being head of school both Irene and Panya were thrilled to be served a free lunch of potato veggies with fruit nuggets and brownie bites. “We started the day with welcoming children in front of the school gate... just like our principal Mr Robin Kirkham does every morning,” says Irene, dressed in a formal jacket and boots. “We also did class visits, gave away certificates to students and did Jump Jam for fitness.” Panyam dressed in a frock with party shoes, says one of the highlights was signing school cheques for power and water. The school accountant photocopied cheques for phone and power bills and got the girls to sign them.

Eight-year-olds Irene Arora(left) and Panya Sethi got to play principals for the day at Point View School. Pushed out of his office was principal Robin Kirkham Back left) with deputy principal Andie Pirie. Times photos Farida Master.

“We also did a school inspection round and found some nails sticking out of the wood in the middle playground. The principal got it fixed immediately,” she says. The principals for the day were even interviewed by the school media team. Both Emilia Reghenzani and Hayden Potter from Year 6 had some hard questions to ask. Talking about the best part of the day, Panya said it was the free lunch they received. Irene concedes that the principal’s job is rather complicated and she acknowledges how tough it can be. There were still emails to be sent to all the teachers and lots of reading, maths and work study to be done, she says.

Real Estate

Especially for those living in the east, EastLife is published on the first week of each month.

Tiny house, big dreams for Bobbie The growing interest in tiny houses continues to capture the imagination. Architect/concept designer Bobbie Cornell, who went to school in Bucklands Beach, has embraced the tiny house movement – and its frustrations. She designed and built her own version on Waiheke Island and last Monday – after a couple of hiccups – had it shipped via ferry to Half Moon Bay. The house is this week awaiting a driver for the final trip to the

APRIL EDITION

front yard of Bobbie’s place in Tauranga. It is currently is perched on her mum Mimi Hung’s property in Half Moon Bay. “The tiny house movement is gaining momentum, especially for younger generations who want to fight the housing /mortgage battle instead of being tied up with a 20-30 years of mortgage,” said Mimi. “She hopes to be debt-free in less than five years. Bobbie and friends are passionate about it, full marks for trying.”

THIS MONTH as ANZAC Day looms, EastLife

chats with a fledgling ‘warbird’ whose gift of the gab, no doubt, cracks up those on the ‘up and up!’ We also focus on a photographer who has seen parts of NZ most of us can only dream about and we highlight the amazing wood works of local artist, Jane Allnatt. We also talk with roller derby competitor, Holly ‘Golightly’ aka Brady and visit two enterprising women whose Akari range of natural skin care products is all about the benefits of coconut oil. Of course, there’s plenty more so be sure to pick up your free copy of the April edition.

Bobbie Cornell’s tiny house was relocated from Waiheke Island to Half Moon Bay aboard the ferry. Photo supplied.

Copies are available from locations across the district – visit eastlife.co.nz for pickup sites. An e-edition is also available.

sh Gera has cooked for Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson. But the newest chef at Waipuna Hotel isn’t fazed by his celebrity clientele.

“They’re just ordinary people,” he says nonchalantly. Ash began cooking around the age of 17, simply because with two working parents, it was “necessary to do so”. Born and raised in India, Ash was brought up with food being a very large part of life – and so enrolling in culinary school seemed a natural step, he says. “The word passion has been possibly overused...but I found my sanity around the cooking side of it,” says Ash, calling it his first love affair. His first job was in Dubai at what he calls a “playground for the rich and famous.” “I fell in love with the place, the process, [and] everything around that. “I could connect to the people and the cooking itself – the rush you get doing the service, the pressure, everything happening at once, everyone yelling [and] lots of pans clanging...it all gave me an exhilarating rush,” he said After two and a half years in Dubai, Ash discovered New

Zealand on a backpacking trip and instantly fell in love. “The first thing that came to mind was the pictures you draw when you’re little, the sun going down behind the mountains... that’s exactly what you could see in real life and I thought if you’re going to live somewhere, that’s the place to live.” Ash is now seven months into the job at Waipuna and says it’s the “feel good culture” of the social enterprise that makes it

so enjoyable. “I’ve got sous chefs who have been here for more than seven years, a restaurant manager [who has been here] 20 years, a banquet manager who has been here for a defining three decades, our baker has been here 24 years or so – it’s very unusual in the hospitality industry to retain people for so long.” He’s now looking forward to what’s on the horizon. “We are in the business of creating memories [and] what an incredible way to create memories,” he says. It could be as simple as the taste of fresh tomatoes that haven’t been chilled before or having a bottle of good single estate extra virgin olive oil as a staple in your kitchen cupboard - or delicious vinegar to season the final product. Be it the comfort of a slow braised meal on a cold day or exquisite truffles, every meal can be a lasting experience, he says. “It’s been a brilliant seven months and I’m sure there’s lots more to come.” ■ Head to Wellingtons Restaurant at Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre, 58 Waipuna Road, Mt Wellington. Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!” Fees: Casual 10 Hours 20 Hours

Hornets pave the way for women After a brief stint in the 1990s, the Howick Hornets are entering a new era of women’s rugby league once again in a bid to get more girls involved in the sport. ■■By Tiffany Salmond

Sandra McGill has labelled the results of an unnecessary land swap as a “visual nightmare”.

Hang on a minute Jim! Re Friends of Macleans Park (Times, March 12). I am writing in response to an article about Howick Local Board member Jim Donald’s proposal to form a group to be called ‘Friends of Macleans Park’. Garry Boles, member of the Howick Local Board, had been in discussion with me about whether Eastern Beach Action Network (EBAN) wished to change its name to Friends of Macleans Park. (Jim Donald will surely have known about this.) I advised Garry near the end of February that I would contact him after seeking the opinion of others. We were waiting for the return of a questionnaire from our members on the subject before making a decision. Eastern Beach Action Network

(EBAN) was established in 2002 when a group of residents came together to protect the park from a development that would have destroyed the recreation area at Eastern Beach (a development that Jim Donald supported). Since then, while we have remained a small group, we have continued to advocate for the park along with other matters affecting Eastern Beach. As an elected councillor in 1999, Jim Donald played a significant role in ensuring a major land swap between Macleans College and Macleans Park was heard by two Commissioners rather than the Hearings Committee. The land swap that followed was unnecessary and has been extremely damaging to Macleans Park. The visual nightmare in the

photograph I have attached to this letter is one of the problems resulting from that swap. It didn’t need to happen. At a Howick Local Board workshop in 2014 Jim gave his support for another land swap with the school, inevitably damaging to the park, but yet to go before the Howick Local Board. I cannot say whether Jim’s publicised desire to clear drains in Macleans Park is genuine or political gimmickry. I do however think he should have shown us the courtesy of waiting until he had heard whether or not we intended to change our name to Friends of Macleans Park before advertising a new group with that name. emale teams are the newest addition to the Howick Hornets club this year after a push from Auckland Rugby League to get more girls involved in the sport. Last year ARL created an under-15 and under-17’s female grade to see whether it had potential. Thanks to the success of the competition they have decided to run it again with the addition of an under-13 girls grade. The new female grades have slightly different rules to the boys with 20 minutes each way and nine players on each team. Howick Hornets club captain Denie Allan says the club have always had girls playing in the junior teams alongside the boys, but once the girls reach the age of 12 they are no longer allowed to due to safety reasons. “The whole idea of this is to get more girls playing. They will then eventually enter the women’s grades which will create a much greater competition for them in the future,” says Mr Allan He says when ARL presented the new concept to the club, everyone thought it was a fantastic idea. “Some of the best rugby league juniors we’ve had are all girls so it’s a real shame that they were not able to play anymore.

“It seemed like a really good way to keep them in the game. It’s a logical pathway to follow,” says Mr Allen. Howick Hornets youth girls development officer Dean Diamond says he would love to see the girls teams become a permanent fixture at the club. “Eventually I would like to see Howick have a women’s side as well and a couple of feeder teams. “It’s pretty hard at the moment as it’s in the middle of the touch and tag seasons so it has been difficult to get the girls to sign up at this stage,” says Mr Diamond. Auckland rugby league general manager Greg Whaiapu says getting more female players involved in rugby league is a key area of development for them. “We want to give young women in our game the best possible chance to develop their skills, while providing them with grades to ensure they can play right through from juniors to our senior women’s competition. “At last year’s Women’s Rugby League World Cup, 21 of the 24 players selected by the Kiwi Ferns came from the Auckland competition, and that’s something we want to build on going forward,” says Mr Whaiapu. ‘PM misleads over fuel taxes’ The Prime Minister has repeatedly misled New Zealanders by claiming the previous Government was planning a 20 cent per litre fuel tax hike, as she has tried and failed to sell her Government’s transport plans, National’s Transport spokesperson Jami-Lee Ross says. “New Zealanders are about to be whacked by an increase of up to 25 cents a litre – or $15 every time they fill their cars. At the same time the Government is planning to gut regional roading funding so it can pump more cash into trams in Auckland. “Motorists and communities right around New Zealand are about to be hammered at the petrol pump – yet get fewer new roads – and the Prime Minister’s justification amounts to ‘Well the previous Government was going to charge 20 cents a litre more too’. “Well that’s bogus. “The previous Government had committed to new roads right around New Zealand because the National Party understands how important they are to our regions. But while officials had recommended an increase to pay for

Howick Pakuranga miss out on podium some of them, we rejected that advice and committed to the projects under existing funding allocations. “We were very clear on that during the election – the same one where the Prime Minister also promised no new taxes. “The Prime Minister has also pointed to a 17 cent per litre rise in fuel prices under the previous National Government as justification for her raid on the back pockets of hardworking New Zealanders. That was over

nine years. “Well just six months in she’s announced a hike of up to 25 cents. That includes the proposed new nationwide fuel tax increase and the upcoming Auckland regional fuel tax which could be rolled out to the rest of New Zealand in three years. “This is just the start and it’s a bad one. The Government needs to stop treating motorists like an ATM and it needs to deliver for our regions.”

Howick Pakuranga baseball players narrowly missed out on a top three finish after placing fourth at the United Airlines Men’s National Championship over the long weekend. The competition, held at Lloyd Elsmore Park, saw 10 teams from across the nation and Australia – including two of Auckland’s strongest and oldest softball clubs – battle it out to be crowned champion. Ten teams from across the nation and Australia, including two of Auckland’s strongest and oldest softball clubs, are set to battle it out over the long Easter weekend, with the prize being the nation’s best men’s baseball team in 2018. First place was claimed by the New

Zealand International Baseball Community (NZIBC) – a group of Australian based Kiwi baseball players, who defeated Auckland club champions Bayside-Westhaven in the final on Easter Monday.

OPINION

Warriors deliver knockout R

ather than the knockout Joseph Parker hoped to deliver to Anthony Joshua’s ‘glass jaw’ in Cardiff, it was the Warriors NRL defeat of premier favourites Sydney Roosters that provided the past weekend’s sporting highlight. Four wins in a row to charge to the top of this year’s ladder compared with a string of losses to end a dismal 2017 speaks volumes for the smart infusion of some new blood to get the team’s heart pumping. What was most pleasing about the 30-6 Sydney result was not the tries scored but the magnificent defence on the Warriors goal line that restricted the Roosters to one. This without talented Shaun Johnson (groin), whose two late

drop goals sunk the Canberra Raiders, and defensive king pin Simon Mannering who has yet to start this season. With Mason Lino making a fine fist of standoff half, experienced Blake Green played a smart scum half’s game with probing kicks and long skip passes which team-mates hit at pace. It provided an interesting contrast to Johnson’s half pace lateral runs and passes that too often reach the hands of his mates at the same time as opposing tacklers. In fairness, Johnson can be a game breaker and his tackling has become more robust. But I want to see him return to his instinctive, elusive running game and let the clever Blake be the backline general.

With centre Peter Hiku and Solomone Kata running hard and captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in devastating form, it was a pity powerful right wing David Fusitu’a didn’t receive more ball though he did score a corker from a towering Lino cross kick. With Tohu Harris and Adam Blair leading the forwards and Bunty Afoa running powerfully, the Warriors are reaping the benefits of the work put in by outstanding fitness and strength coach Alex Corvo. Meanwhile, while trainer Kevin Barry had cause to complain about the Italian referee prematurely breaking up the in fighting in Joseph Parker’s world heavyweight boxing clash against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff, no one could dispute Joshua

was a clear points winner before 80,000 fans. Nor do I give much credence to Barry’s claim that Parker should have thrown more double lefts. That’s okay if your feet are going forward too, but too many punches from both boxers fell short of their target. If 26-year-old Parker is ever to be given another crack at 6ft 6in Joshua, Barry will need to teach him to bob and weave a la Joe Frasier or Mike Tyson so that he can get in hitting range to deliver rips, hooks and uppercuts. While Joshua fought better in the thriller against Wladimir Klitschko, the Parker camp made a bad mistake in underestimating him. However the personable Parker did have

With Ivan Agnew

ew’s AgnANGLE

the satisfaction of being the first fighter to go the distance with him in 21 fights. With a multi-million dollar purse to set him up for life, Parker should enjoy his consolation prize even though he is no longer unbeaten after 25. At 26, he will get better. So, too, will Joshua, who is just two years older. Meanwhile former Aucklander Ben Lam continues to star with four tries in the Hurricanes 50-19 Super Rugby demolition of the rejuvenated Rebels while the Blues scored six tries but let in six in their 63-40 loss to the Sharks. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Team drops in before Games The seven-member New Zealand squash team for the Commonwealth Games had a send-off at the Howick Squash Club in preparation for the Gold Coast. Howick Squash Club was chosen as the location because of its progressive nature and will be using i-squash to promote the sport to younger generations. I-squash is a new way of encouraging kids and adults to take part in

the game. Squash NZ also wanted to take the team to a club in a suburb rather than the regular Remuera Rackets Club or national squash centre, a club member said. The New Zealand team was able to mix and mingle with the enthusiastic crowd at the club. For coach and former Commonwealth Games medal winner Glen Wilson it was an opportunity to see

some of the community where he lives. Wilson resides in east Auckalnd area when he is in New Zealand. Stars of the send-off were the top Kiwi players Joelle King, now ranked No 4 in the world, and Paul Coll who is ranked ninth.
