Big day, big feelings The first day at school can be daunting. Tears, excitement, anxiety, apprehension, fun, laughter—the mix of emotions can be both confusing and exhilarating as the big adventure begins. Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN captured five-year-old Susu leaning on to her mum Huda Mughal as they are being greeted by teacher Pauline Boggs at Baverstock Oaks on their first day at school. The expression in Susu’s eyes says it all.

s the storm that battered the country earlier this year becomes a distant memory, the focus is turning to how to prepare for the future. Local beaches were battered in the storm, which caused severe flooding, power cuts and widespread debris. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff visited Mellons Bay last Friday on the first of his tour of local beaches to survey the damage and speak with residents and Local Board members about erosion concerns and preventative measures for the future. Goff said some local beaches, including Cockle Bay, Little Bucklands Beach, Big Bucklands Beach and Eastern Beach, had been identified as areas of urgency and council staff were acting quickly before the next king tide hit. “Sometimes we worry we put the red tape out and it stays there for months and in this case we want to move as quickly as we can [and] it is going to impose another cost you don’t budget for but you do need to when it comes up,” he said. Speaking alongside Goff, Auckland Council manager coastal and geotechnical services Paul Klinac said the swell that hit during the king tide was of a “reasonable magnitude” and created a water level approximately a metre above the average high tide level. Klinac said work was being done with Howick Local Board to explore options for long-term treatment for affected beaches – one of which was to explore the option of extending the

seawall at Cockle Bay beach. “We met contractors on site and the short term response [is] to put geotextile cloth in where you’ve got pronounced scour in and around the Pohutukawa tree [and] to put some rock in front of that geotextile and come back with contractors in approximately three weeks time and look to extend that sea wall.” He said it would be important to address wave reflection which could be dealt with by a combination of responses. “It may be that we look to install some rock revetment in front of the structure to dissipate some wave energy, [and] that might be in combination with a groyne structure to better control that wave energy that’s coming in.” Klinac said an extension of the sea wall at Cockle Bay would “terminate in a way that will obviate some of those end effects and provide protection to the Pohutukawa that are there currently”. “We’ve worked closely with council arborists and they have confirmed that the trees [at Cockle Bay] are not beyond saving. “There was mixed messages there that one tree might have to come out that’s not the case.” Howick Local Board member Garry Boles, who holds the parks portfolio, says an urgent meeting was held following the storm to discuss restoration plans for beaches that were already underway and would now be pushed through quicker. He said Bucklands Beach had suf-

fered a large washout at one area on The Parade that has been addressed by Auckland Council which put in sandbags and is looking at a long-term vision. Boles said Mellons Bay would need immediate refurbishment work due to a large section being scoured out during the storm and Council and local board members were looking to see what would need to be done longterm. The Half Moon Bay boat ramp, which was severely damaged in the storm, was expected to cost around $100,000 to repair, said Boles, and it would be another six to 10 weeks

before the floating pontoons which were removed after the storm for repair and refurbishment would be returned. Boles said it was a ‘perfect storm’ of events, but he said there was no need to worry about the next lot of high tides unless there was another storm. “It wasn’t [just] the wet weather, it was to do with the tide. We had an extra 300-400mm of water rising, the king tide, wind from the direction that hurts us the most [a nor’easter] – all planets were aligned.” Mr Goff said it could have been much worse. “Despite the perfect storm of the king tide coinciding with the storm it could have been much worse than that.” “It wasn’t as dramatically bad, for example, as the storm we had back in March when we had that huge degree of flooding but it’s still concerning to residents when you’ve just watched the coastal fringe eating into the reserve area and the potential damage to the beach and the facilities on it. Speaking to the Times at Cockle Bay last week, Boles and Howick Local Board chairman David Collings said the storm is a good reminder for locals to check how prepared they would be if a more severe storm struck. “It’s a good time to look at how prepared we are – do we have enough reserves?” said Boles. “[This time] a lot of people were fine but if it was a little bit worse a lot of people wouldn’t have been fine and we just have to keep in mind how your emergency kit is at home.”

Council blitz on negligent building sites Auckland Council has taken action against widespread compliance issues, including insufficient sediment controls and failing to control rubbish from building sites, at a large development in east Auckland. Staff from the council’s Regulatory Compliance team undertook a large-scale inspection in Flat Bush on Monday morning that found 13 construction sites on a single street in breach of the rules, despite warnings from the council earlier in the month and a proactive campaign to educate builders in the area.

No tolerance for non-compliance Councillor Linda Cooper, Chair of the Regulatory Committee, says that such widespread noncompliance is unacceptable. “This is especially disappointing to see when the council has taken steps to try and educate these builders and has given them a number of warnings. We expect a much higher level of professionalism from the building industry,” Councillor Cooper said.

“Their resource consent is essentially an agreement between the developer and the public that they will follow the rules and ensure they aren’t causing any adverse effects. When the council is forced to step in, it costs ratepayers and means our staff isn’t available to address other issues Times, November 30) “It’s not right that Aucklanders have to pay for these companies’ disregard for the rules,” Councillor Cooper said. “While the council encourages development to meet the current housing shortage, it cannot be at the expense of the environment.”

Warnings ignored by builders Despite extensive work to educate builders, and repeated warnings to clean up their acts, the council’s Manager Regulatory Compliance Steve Pearce said that there have been continued compliance issues in the area. “We’ve seen general disregard for any measures that mini-

mised sediment run off and for the advice given to them. In addition, many sites have failed to control accumulated rubbish from blowing off the site or spilling onto public land,” Mr Pearce says. “The area has also been subject to dumping problems. Much of this is domestic rubbish, although some has clearly come from building sites.” Failure to follow the directions of the abatement may result in infringement fines of $750 for every day they fail to comply. Ultimately, they may be prosecuted and enforcement orders sought to prevent any further building work taking place. Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions team will be clearing the area of rubbish and will proactively monitor the area for further offending. This may result in infringements fines up to $400 or even prosecution.

Local board education disregarded Howick Local Board Chair David Collings said while pleased to

see council taking action, it is disappointing it has gotten to this point. “It is particularly disappointing as last year, we initiated a small sites ambassador’s programme which involved officers proactively educating builders to ensure sites were kept tidy and they had good sediment control.” The programme focussed on finding out how well builders were doing with sediment management and the industry’s level of knowledge of this practice. “What staff found was a widespread lack of sediment control in place, so builders were given brochures in an attempt to educate them on sediment control, their responsibilities and the requirements of the Resource Management Act,” he said. “Flat Bush is a hive of building activity so it is vital that there is proper management of sediment runoff from development sites so our waterways are not polluted. Anything that puts the health of our waterways at risk cannot be tolerated,” said Mr Collings.

Wanting to bring to light the unethical way in which women were being treated, Mr Jones along with his senior colleagues Dr Bill McIndoe and Dr Jock McLean, published a scientific paper exposing the truth and the disastrous outcome of the experiment. VANDALISM

Outrage over kauri trees illegally chopped

CAMPING

Freedom camp site assessed

■ BY THERESE HENKIN

R

esidents are outraged and council is investigating following the tree topping of five kauri trees in Mellons Bay recently. Auckland Council has confirmed that permission was not sought to trim the trees which are located on a council-owned reserve along MacDonalds Walkway and investigations are underway. The five kauri along with at least two other native trees were found with the tops of the trees sawn off, a practice which is known to be the most harmful tree pruning method. The presumption among residents is that the trimming was motivated to improve the sea views for nearby houses. Local resident Robert McCallum says he became aware of the damage by other residents of Mellons Bay who were upset with this “blatant vandalism”. “I am astonished that somebody could believe they have a right to just destroy these approximately 30-year-old trees in this manner as the trees are in a reserve not on private property,” he says. “It would appear that the topping of the six trees provides a view shaft to the beach for two properties.” McCallum doubts the trees will survive the damage which has left only half the kauri grove.

“As a relatively frequent user of the walking track beside this reserve I am saddened by this vandalism and would hope that the council take legal action against those responsible,” he says. “If no action is taken (the trees are) at risk of similar vandalism as these trees grow. This is particularly poignant as the council and iwi are currently trying to stop the spread of kauri dieback in the region.” McCallum says the council should be more active in inform-

ing the public of their rights in respect of the management of trees. The Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA) is calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. “[We] firmly support the call for the council to take a strong line against this self-serving vandalism and encourage the council to seek to identify the perpetrator(s) and then follow up with legal due process,” says HRRA chairperson Gayleen Mackereth.

“A thorough investigation will also serve to warn others that the council is serious about protecting its treasured urban forests for all to enjoy.” Several other residents have shared their outrage at the illegal tree topping and are calling for those responsible to be prosecuted. ➤ Auckland Council would like anyone who has information about the unconsented trimming to call 301-0101 to aid in its investigation.

Freedom camping could be about to return to Howick. A freedom camping trial took place in the area early last year, outraging some locals who felt there wasn’t enough consultation between council and residents. Some locals felt there wasn’t enough consultation between council and residents. The initiative was trialled at 28 sites around Auckland, including four in Howick. Macleans Park, Moore St car park, Wellington St car park and Lloyd Elsmore Park were available only to self-contained campervans. Auckland Council manager, social policy & bylaws Michael Sinclair said the trial was designed as a way to promote Howick to selfcontained campers as a way to boost local economic development. In a statement, he said council staff are now assessing sites “to be included in a new freedom camping bylaw as areas where freedom camping is either prohibited or restricted”. He says council staff will engage with local boards and community groups during the development of the bylaw. Public submissions will be invited and hearings will take place once the draft bylaw has been approved by council. Sinclair said the council aims to have a new bylaw adopted and implemented in time for summer 2018/19.

OPINION

Second languages for the future As the new school term starts, thousands of students up and down the country will have packed their bags and headed off to start a new year of learning. This is a good time of year to reflect on the value our education system provides young New Zealanders. It’s also important for us to continue to come up with proactive ideas for supporting students and their families in their educational pursuits. On proactive ideas, one of the big ideas we have recently been talking

about is from my colleague, Nikki Kaye, where she has proposed providing universal access to a second language in schools. The benefits of speaking more than one language have enormous cognitive, cultural, social and economic benefits. Our languages proposal is about ensuring that all children in Years 1-8 have universal access and resources to learn a second language. Nikki has put forward a new law change that would require the Education Minister to set at least 10

priority languages for schools following public consultation. It would also place a requirement on the Crown to resource the provision of these languages in schools. Initially we expect languages that would be consulted on would include Mandarin, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and potentially Hindi. It will then be up to school boards to consult with their communities to determine which of the priority languages will be taught at their school. Every school will be required to

deliver at least one second language, but some may choose to offer more than one. Our estimate is that the cost of the changes will be around $40 million per year to be put towards providing schools with more expert language teachers, language specialists and online resources. Strengthening language fluency has the potential to lead to a smarter, more culturally aware nation that is better equipped to succeed domestically and internationally. While there have been some posi-

tive steps over the last decade there is still more to do. This proposal represents an important investment in our country’s future. Our proposal also shows that, despite being on the other side of the Parliament now, National is still able to come up with innovative ideas to help New Zealanders. I look forward to more proposals like this being put forward. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

It represents an increase of 10, or 13 per cent, compared to 2016. While there has been an increase in fatalities versus 2016, an analysis of five year rolling averages indicates a plateauing of preventable drowning fatalities against an increasing population, high tourism and immigration, and growth in recreational activity. In 2017 there were seven preventable fatal drownings of toddlers, four more than in 2016. There was an increase in preventable fatal drownings in, or around the home in 2017 with seven bath, eight home pool and three pond fatalities – 18 compared with five in 2016. Two fatalities occurred in Public Pools. Offshore fatalities almost doubled from 11 in 2016 to 20 in 2017. Nine lake fatalities in 2017 (zero in 2016) has brought inland still water preventable drownings to 13 in 2017. River fatalities almost halved from 23 in 2016 to 13 in 2017, beach fatalities were down to 14 in 2017 from 21 in 2016 and there were 5 less tidal water fatalities (11 in 2017 down from 16 in 2016). Meanwhile, a Cockle Bay family has joined up to their local YMCA swim school in Lagoon Panmure. Laura Fisher and her husband are parents of four children aged five and under, and Stevie is their baby daughter. They are recipients of one of the first new Baby Swim Scholarships from Huggies.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Inorganic collection bookings now open B

ookings are now open for Auckland Council’s 2018 inorganic service, which will start making collections in late February. It’s easy to make a booking. Simply visit aucklandcouncil. govt.nz/inorganic and follow the steps. When you enter your address the booking tool will let you know when your collection week is, and you can go ahead and book. You can also make a booking at any council service centre, or by calling 301-0101. We will tell you your exact collection date closer to the time, by email, text or phone – if you no longer need the service, you can easily cancel.

About the service

This is the third year Auckland Council’s improved inorganic collection service will run. The service runs between February and December. All Auckland households can book an annual inorganic collection of up to 1 cubic metre of material (roughly the size of one small trailer load). Just before collection day, residents simply need to leave items for collection neatly stacked in an obvious place

within the boundary of their property. Councillor Penny Hulse, chair of the Environment and Community committee, says the improved inorganic collection service has helped increase the amount of recoverable materials and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill. “Since the service started in late 2015, we’ve diverted more than 3800 tonnes of recyclable items and materials that would have otherwise gone to landfill. “With more than 80 community groups utilising and repurposing the materials being recovered from the collection, the inorganic service is truly helping create a circular environment for our waste in the Auckland region.” Have items in good condition? Think about selling or donating first Rather than store items for an annual collection, Auckland Council is encouraging residents to sell or donate their unwanted reusable items any time of the year. “There other ways to pass these items on to new homes without having to wait for a collection in your area,” says Cr Hulse.

Are you, or someone you know, a pain in the neck? Neck problems – Do you have it?

the neck. When a nerve is “pinched” in the neck, numbness, weakness and possibly pain of the hands or arms may occur.

Today’s modern living often entails hours of driving and hunching over workstations, which can play havoc with our necks.

Other common reasons people will consult with a chiropractor include whiplash, RSI (repetitive strain injuries) or overuse, degeneration and wear and tear, and postural problems, also headaches and migraines.

So it is not surprising that neck pain is the second most common complaint bringing people to chiropractors. Whilst neck pain is less common than low back pain, millions of people experience neck pain and related arm pain at some stage in their lives and therefore seek chiropractic care. It can result from abnormalities in the soft tissues – muscles, ligaments, and nerves, as well as in the bone and the joints of the spine. The most common causes that chiropractors identify and manage are soft tissue abnormalities from injury or prolonged wear and tear and in many people it is also the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders and arms. When neck pain is caused by muscle strain, you may have aches and stiffness that spread to the upper are and forearm. Shooting pain that spreads down the arm into the hand and fingers can be a symptom of a “pinched nerve” or nerve entrapment in

We are your trusted East Auckland chiropractors, commonly seeing babies, children, families, pregnant women, sports people and professionals. Our team of chiropractors are Dr’s Tanja Glucina, Janette McCormick and David Russell.

How does the body work? In your house, you have a circuit breaker box. In that box you have individual circuits that control specific rooms in your house. If you were to blow the circuit that leads to the kitchen, nothing in your kitchen would work. Without a proper supply of electricity, nothing in your kitchen would work. The only solution is to go to the circuit breaker box and physically turn the power on by turning the circuit on. In your body, you have a circuit breaker box known as your brain and spinal cord. It has a series of 24 circuits known as vertebrae (spinal bones). At each vertebra a wire called a nerve transmits information from your brain to all parts of your body including all of your muscles, organs and glands.

“There are groups and charities that take donations of items in good condition all year round. You could also consider selling items, or using a platform like Neighbourly to swap or give them away.” The cost of the collection

is $23.29 and included in the waste management targeted waste rate, which is part of the annual rates bill. Residents can book their collection any time of the year, until bookings close for their area (12 days before that collection week begins).

These days, he’s more interested in the history behind the bikes. “I’ve moved on a bit to wanting to archive things and record the history. It’s that aspect I like – the development, the technology of the time and to restore things as they were, but present them in their best light.”

At 88 years old, the Velocette has had a life well lived. Once the best of the best, it now sits pride of place in Mr Anderson’s man cave – and while it’s no longer racing, it still has plenty of history to share with those who seek it. ➤➤Car show: Malcolm Anderson’s 1930 MK 1 KTT Velocette will be on display at the Brit & Euro Car Show on at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday March 4,10am-3pm. nderstated elegance is the first thing that comes to mind upon seeing Malcolm Anderson’s 1930 MK 1 KTT Velocette. Even to the untrained eye, the British bike screams classic. It’s sleek and elegant, with no superfluous features. The bare bones of the Velocette are displayed proudly – a statement that immediately draws attention to the bike. It has no rear suspension – simply springs under the seat – and an overhead camshaft – a feature quite advanced for its day. The 350cc bike was first produced in 1925 specifically to race the Isle of Man TT course. Capable of more than 160km/h, it went on to win the junior TT in 1926, 1928 and 1929. It was acquired by Mr Anderson in 1980 in a state almost unrecognisable as to what it is today. Together with his father, he restored the bike to get it raceready and went on to race at Hampton Downs, Taupo and multiple times in the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Racing Register (NZCMRR) Classic Racing Festival, managing to collect more than a few wins including both the Velocette Trophy and the Per-

Certainty needed for transport

our local Community

Transport continues to be one of the most important policy areas for Pakuranga, Howick, and Botany, and my National Party colleagues and I are continuing to hold the government to account over its plans around the country. Together with my neighbouring MPs, Denise Lee and Jami-Lee Ross, we recently launched a petition calling on the government to commit to funding the East West Link project, which they cancelled last year. The reason we’re doing this is simple - we need solutions to our local transport issues now, and cannot afford continuous delays that will only leave us waiting longer. The government’s refusal to assure the public of its commitment to the AMETI project is also of major concern. Both of these projects are vital to easing congestion and delivering the public transport improvements that we desperately need in East Auckland. Without alternative proposals, the city of Auckland is yet again left without a way forward to improving its infrastructure to handle the rapid growth we are experiencing. Last week also saw reports that Labour is considering diverting taxes paid by motorists who want better roads, to

With Simeon Brown

Simeon SAYS light rail instead. The National Land Transport Fund, is paid for by road users through petrol excise and road user charges and is ringfenced to be spent on roading projects. The NLTF means that those using the roads are the ones paying for the roads. Changing this model to allow the NLTF to be used to pay for the Governments pet rail projects shows contempt for the purpose of the fund. My job as your MP is to represent your views and ensure the government is held to account as a member of the National opposition. Please help by signing the petition to support the EastWest Link and send a message to the Government that they can’t ignore East Auckland’s transport needs. You can find a copy of the petition on page 3 and you can freepost it to me at Parliament, or sign it online at www. national.org.nz. Thank you for your support. Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

The council/AT have decided that a perfectly good street (rolled asphalt) needed to be volcanicchipsealed. Westerham Drive has never had a pot hole, to my knowledge, and had a smooth surface. Now the road is noisy, our driveways and car foot wells contain loose volcanic chip. The edge of the roads on hot days starts to melt. It is a gross waste of money as was the volcanic chip resealing of Kilkenny (previously rolled asphalt) of which they have just reverted to rolled asphalt at the intersections of Maghera and Moyrus within a year of volcanic chipping the road. Cheap and nasty solution that keeps the roading contractor happy. Clive Pedersen Dannemora

Re Aircraft Noise. It seems Auckland airport has started the new SMART flight path over Eastern suburbs, Howick in particular. Some of the these flights are really noisy, I measured 60db at 7.30am which was the same as a low flying helicopter. It is because they have lowered the altitude of flights landing from what they have been. I wondered if your readers are aware of what has happened and why, suddenly, we are being woken up with really loud jets as they are approaching the airport. Do they realise that if they find this annoying that there is an avenue of complaint to the airport. Apparently when they trialled this, few people complained so now it is all on. What about Panmure? It would be nice if the political debate about AMETI actually involved the politicians listening to Panmure’s voice about the design of the project. There are serious flaws in the design as it affects our town and community but no-one seems to think that our community should have any say over it. It’s all about solving problems for Pakuranga and Howick - not Panmure. Keith Sharp

OUR HOMES TODAY

Keep cool without CELEBRATE blowing out your SUMMER! electricity bill

February is the time for harvesting and enjoying your summer fruits and veges. Take your produce into the kitchen and create wonderful fresh meals, salads, desserts and cocktails for your family to enjoy! Nothing beats a fresh picked posy of flowers around the house, and lazing outside in the garden with the scents and sights of your efforts, it really is so rewarding!

Y

Use fans

Floor and desktop fans are relatively cheap to buy and install, and are much cheaper to run than air conditioning, Mr Davison says. “They’re especially good if you only get a week or two of extremely hot weather during the year.”

When it comes to edibles, harvest summer crops such as tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, courgettes, eggplant, new potatoes and spring onions, and pick every day to encourage continuous fruiting – especially peas, beans, eggplant, cucumbers and courgettes. Keep planting new lettuce and herbs regularly too, to ensure a consistent supply. In the flower garden, keep up the good work dead heading to encourage new blooms on all flowering plants. Summer flowering bulbs like gladioli will be blooming now, so keep checking their flower heads for insects or disease and spray with Yates Mite Spray if required.

Above, it’s best to cool one room as this is what most heat pumps/air conditioners are sized for; below, closing blinds for shade. Photo istock.com

Now is the time to sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor area, so if it’s looking a little empty, we can help. We have a great range of outdoor furniture, umbrellas and bbq’s. Love cooking outdoors all summer long? Perfect the art of outdoor cooking with the new Everdure range by Heston Blumenthal. This revolutionary range of barbeques developed by one of the world’s top chefs, brings his magic touch to the great outdoors making it easy for anyone who enjoys barbeque cooking. Come in and view this amazing range today. Have a great summer in your garden.

Close blinds and curtains Closing blinds and curtains at windows that receive direct sun provides shade from the hot sun.

Longer term solutions Plant deciduous trees on the north and west sides of your home – they provide shade in summer, but lose their leaves in winter and allow sunlight through. You can also use trellises for growing plants to shade your windows in summer.

Install external window shades – such as blinds, awnings or louvres. They allow you to shade rooms in summer, but let light and heat in at other times of the year. External shading is much more effective than internal shading as it blocks the sun’s heat before it gets inside your home. When building, design eaves (or roof overhangs) above northfacing windows – to stop direct sunlight entering rooms at the height of summer, but allowing direct light in the rest of the year. They won’t help you with lowangled morning and afternoon sun from the east and west.

The median price for all lifestyle properties sold in the three months to December 2017 was $655,750 and was $72,750 higher compared to the three months ended December 2016 (+12.5 per cent). Brian Peacocke, Rural Spokesman, at REINZ says: “While sales volumes for the 3-month period ending December 2017 eased from the same period in 2016, there was still a significant drop of over 20 per cent for the month of December compared to the previous month. “The impact of the holiday period may give some explanation, but in some specific regions, namely Northland and Taranaki, the collapse exceeded 50 per cent from one month to the next. “Those regions holding their own included Hawke’s Bay, Nelson/Marlborough, Canter-

bury, Otago and Southland, a pleasing outcome for real estate companies in the South Island, particularly considering the shortened month due to the onset of the holiday period,” he concludes. Two regions recorded an increase in sales compared to December 2016. Manawatu/Wanganui recorded the most substantial increase in sales (+15 sales) in the three months to December 2017 compared to December 2016. Compared to November 2017, six regions recorded an increase in sales. Most of the regions saw the median price of lifestyle blocks increase between the three months ending December 2016 and the three months ending December 2017.

Lifestyle market softens further Data released today by the Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ) shows there were 369 fewer lifestyle property sales (-16.8 per cent) for the three months ended December 2017 than for the three months ended December 2016. Overall, there were 1822 lifestyle property sales in the three months ended December 2017, compared to 1831 lifestyle property sales for the three months ended November 2017 (-0.5 per cent), and 2,191 lifestyle property sales for the three months ended December 2016. A total of 7637 lifestyle properties were sold in the year to December 2017, 1399 (-15.5 per cent) fewer than were sold in the year to December 2016. The value of lifestyle properties sold was $6.04 billion for the year to December 2017.

ou can keep your home cool without blowing your energy bill, according to EECA Energywise. Technical expert Allen Davison says more New Zealanders are using their heat pumps as air conditioners in summer and there are tactics to avoid big energy bills. For example using the fan only setting helps you feel cooler by creating a breeze, he says. “This setting uses a lot less electricity than the full cooling mode. Keep your windows open while using the fan only mode.” Selecting the dehumidifying mode also uses less electricity than the full cooling mode, Mr Davison says. “This works well if it’s humidity rather than the temperature that’s the problem. Shut your doors and windows in the rooms you’re dehumidifying.” Mr Davison suggests only using cooling mode on really hot days when the other methods aren’t enough. “Shut all your doors and windows in the rooms you’re cooling. It’s best to cool one room as this is what most heat pumps/ air conditioners are sized for. Set the thermostat to around 22°C. The room won’t cool down any quicker if you set it lower, but you are likely to use more electricity by overcooling.” Avoid using auto settings because if you forget to switch the unit off, it will start heating if the temperature drops below the thermostat setting, he says. “It’s also important to clean the filter of your air conditioner regularly because clogged filters stop the appliance running efficiently.”

Tamaki Lightning Colts beat Hawks to take final T

he Tamaki Lightning Colts have beaten the Hamilton Hawks to win the 2017/2018 Colts Kiwibowl! The Tamaki Lightning Colts (16-19 years) capped off the perfect finish to their season, defeating the only two teams they had lost to during regular season play, in the play-offs enroute to a Colts Kiwibowl Championship. After beating the Western Wolves 16-0 in the semi-final, the colts took on the previously undefeated Hamilton Hawks in the finals on January 20 at Mountfort Park in Manurewa. The first half finished with no points on the board for either team, with both teams moving the ball but being unable to sustain and complete drives. The Hawks threatened a few times with their strong passing game but were unable to actually get into the end zone. Finally in the third quarter the Hawks quarterback dropped a pinpoint pass in the corner of the end zone to take the lead 6-0. Lightning defensive player Carlos Matamua instantly erased this deficit by returning the ensuing kick-off 85 yards to put the Lightning on the board and tie the game at 6-6.

The Tamaki Lightning Colts (16-19 years) have won the Colts Kiwibowl.

Both defences held strong for the remainder of the time and the game finished in a 6-all draw. Overtime saw the Lightning take first offensive possession. Having not been able to break the end zone thus far in the game, the offense came out with a newfound hunger behind a resurgent offensive line and running back Lino Leiataua.

Carter Hackett topped off the drive by ploughing in for the touchdown on the goal line, whilst Lino tacked on the twopoint conversion for the Lightning giving them a 14-6 lead. The Hawks were then stopped less than a yard short on their ensuing drive by the Lightning defence led by Hackett, Javed Mariner and Josh Shanahan resulting in the Tamaki Light-

ning Colts claiming the American Football Auckland (AFA) championship. Offensive co-ordinator Shiraz Soysa said it was great seeing the offense come back to score on that first overtime drive. “After being inconsistent and committing too many penalties earlier in the game, the guys really pulled through when it counted to help win this game.”

HP miss out on T20 title North Shore Cricket Club claimed a sensational final ball, three run victory over Howick Pakuranga in the Premier club Twenty20 Final on Sunday at Eden Park Outer Oval. It was a superb advertisement for club T20 cricket with two centuries scored on the day, first from North Shore skipper Graeme Beghin (109*) before Donovan Grobbelaar (112) replied for Howick Pakuranga. Asked to bat first by Howick’s captain Bill Walsh, Shore skipper Beghin took the game by the scruff of the neck in a blistering innings. He peeled off six sixes and ten fours in his innings and didn’t look at all out of place on Eden Park’s Outer Oval, timing his innings to perfection. Grobbelaar was the pick of the bowlers for Howick Pakuranga with 2-26 from his four overs while Rutvik Botadra, Jamie Brown and Matt McEwan all chipped in with a wicket each. With 186/5 posted from their 20 overs it was always going to be an exciting chase. Carl Brungar got the Shore off to the perfect start with the wicket of Andrew Morrison in the first over. However, it was number four Grobbelaar who held the innings for Howick Pak, his blistering 112 including 12 sixes. With wickets falling at the other end, Howick started to need two a ball for the final few overs. The combination of Ronnie Hira (1-29) and Brungar (3-34) held their nerve for the boys from the Shore keeping it tight in the final overs. With Brungar bowling the last over, the game was on a knife’s edge, Howick requiring 10 off the last two balls. Sam Borland came to the crease and smashed his first ball over the long-on fence for six leaving four required off the final delivery. Borland tried to repeat the dose for the final ball but couldn’t quite clear the fence, Captain Beghin taking the catch to ensure a three-run win for North Shore. Meanwhile in Auckland Premier Cricket’s Hedley Howarth competition, Howick Pakuranga played host to Papatoetoe at Lloyd Elsmore Park with the home side piling on the runs batting first. Daniel Young was the mainstay of the innings scoring a magnificent 125 for his side. Young showed composure and patience against a strong Papatoetoe bowling lineup for his century. The old pro Bhupinder Singh (5-94) toiled hard at the bowling crease and was the pick of the visiting bowlers. Support from Andrew Morrison (69) and Adam Jones (53) ensured Howick made it through to 363/7 declared before inserting the visitors in for a niggly session before the close of play. Papatoetoe managed to make it through to 32/1 at stumps setting up an exciting day two chase.

OPINION

Tennis star’s tears of joy T

he one thing first time major tennis winner Caroline Wozniacki and multiple champion Roger Federer shared in common beyond the huge cheque they won at the Australian Open was tears of joy. In Great Dane Wozniacki’s case they were also tears of relief in the knowledge she will no longer have to answer questions about when she is going to win a major. For Federer, 10 years her senior at 37, it was because he extended his record number of majors to an incredible 20, helped by organisers who agreed to his request to play several night games that allowed him to escape the sizzling Melbourne heat. Federer is a graceful champion who uses the court as a canvas to paint the full range of his artistic strokes. He is also universally acclaimed as a crowd favourite who epitomises sportsmanship and a wonderful match temperament after overcoming temper tantrums in his youth. Few other sportsmen give credence to the power of the top two inches, the mind, as powerfully as the Swiss maestro who won his latest final on Rod Laver Court 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 against the big serving 1.98m Marin Cilic. But for sheer entertainment and long rallies the women’s final provided the greater spectacle with the popular

Wozniacki overcoming gutsy Romanian Simona Halep 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 and relieving her of her world No 1 status. Plagued by a headache and dizziness in the extreme heat, the tenacious Halep fought bravely for every point. But no one, least of all Halep, would deny Wozniacki her greatest achievement in finally attaining that elusive major after an exhilarating, titanic battle. Meanwhile apologies to boxer Joseph Parker for mistakenly calling him David in last week’s Agnew’s Angle which I can only put down to senility on my part and the need for my proof reader to see an optician. Occasionally columnists do fall prey to human error. My greatest regret was a column I wrote over a decade ago blasting radio sports commentator Tony Veitch who has matured into an exceptionally talented interviewer who gets more scoops than any other sports journalist in the country. While there may be some truth in the

adage about the pen being mightier than the sword, Veitch’s gift of the gab, coupled with his intimate knowledge of his subject, makes him compelling listening. NZ Herald subscribers are also extremely well served by a talented sports writing team whose coverage of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the 2015 cricket ODI World Cup and the last two rugby World Cups was outstanding. When I began my journalistic career at the Grey River Argus 57 years ago, T P McLean, Alex Veysey and Dick Brittenden were the sports writers I most admired. But as a team, the Herald’s current group under sports editor Paul Lewis and featuring multiple national award winner Dylan Cleaver, is the best I can recall. While not everyone will agree with controversial columnist Chris Rattue, it is refreshing to note that in constantly calling a spade a spade, he is not handcuffed by political correctness. It is also pleasing to see that yachting and netball writer Dana Johannsen has maintained the high standard set by America’s Cup sportswriter Suzanne McFadden who, late last year, was made a Life Member of the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Caroline Wozniacki rightfully deserves her first major.
